Essex garden brimming with delights to raise funds for hospice

SPECTACULAR garden will take visitors on a magical journey of fun and sensory delight this summer. Little Myles will once again be opening its stunning three acre landscaped garden in Ongar Road, Stondon Massey, to the public from 11am to 4pm on Sunday June 28, to raise funds for Saint Francis Hospice. Judy and Adrian Cowan have lovingly created the themed garden over more than 40 years and it now includes an Asian, slate and Italian garden, along with a coastal area complete with beach huts, deck chairs and seagulls. The couple are also looking forward to sharing their latest project The Jungle, an area planted with exotic plants such as cannas, a banana tree and rice paper plant. It also comes complete with ceramic monkeys, a parrot and a giraffe, along with a mesh wire elephant. “It’s a magical garden,” says Judy. “The garden is always changing. Even if people came last year, it will look different this year,” she adds. Another labour of love has been the garden’s new experimental Prairie Border, which is jam packed with North American prairie perennials which Judy says will add a vibrant splash of colour through the summer until the autumn. Judy’s creative talents are endless. She has made all the ceramic animals, statues and figures positioned around the garden. And she says there are many nooks and crannies which make it perfect for children to explore and learn about nature.

“We really want children to come along to learn and respect nature,” she says. “They will have great fun exploring the garden and finding all the different animals.” This year, she has put together an exciting exploration challenge sheet and a map of the different areas to entertain youngsters. Visitors will even have the chance to treat themselves to a variety of delicious homemade cakes while they sit back and immerse themselves in the Magical retreat glorious surroundings of the tranquil retreat. There will also be a selection of potted plants for sale along with the chance to win some fantastic raffle prizes. Judy and Adrian will reopen their garden the following Sunday for the National Garden Scheme and money raised on the day will also go to the hospice. Little Myles, Ongar Road, Stondon Massey, Brentwood, CM15 0LD. Admission £3.50 per adult, £1 per child.

Unwanted items wanted!

Y

OU may recognise her from presenting Loose Women, but Andrea McLean is also the face of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture and Electrical stores. The TV personality is urging everyone in Essex to have a clear out and donate any unwanted household items to their local BHF store. Andrea said: I have been an advocate of BHS Furniture & Electrical stores for a long time and think their free collection service for donations is fab! Like everyone, I love buying new things for my home but I also like adding a piece of recycled furniture into the mix because not only does it tend to be more unique but it can also help a great cause.” Last year BHF stores raised over £31 million to help the BHF fight heart disease, the nation’s biggest killer. They sell 90,000 items every day

and have over 20,000 volunteers working in over 700 stores. The charity now has over 170 Furniture & Electrical stores across England, Scotland and Wales. Andrea adds: “It’s amazing to think that by doing up your home with items from BHF stores, you are also helping to fund lifesaving research into heart disease which affects people or all ages.” Donations can include anything from sofas, beds, wardrobes, TVs and small electricals. You can even book a free collection for your items online at www.bhf.org.uk/free or call 0800 915 3000. The BHF Furniture & Electrical stores in Essex are in Basildon, Colchester, Harlow and Southend. Those unable to donate but want to help in other ways, how about volunteering? Who are the fittest in Essex?

A night of old school moves and grooves to raise money for Tracy Ralph

ACCORDING to a recent Active People survey published by Sport England, adults living in Chelmsford are the most active in Essex, with 44.3% participating in a moderate intensity sport for at least one 30 minute exercise session per week - with the majority choosing swimming as their sport of choice. The figure compares to just 37.1% for the rest of the county and 35.2% for the rest of England. The findings also point to the fact that Chelmsford was the only local authority in Essex to have achieved a statistically significant increase in participation since the first survey was undertaken in 2005. Chelmsford has now fewer overweight adults and lower childhood obesity levels than the rest of England. Chelmsford’s four leisure centres now boast between them state-ofthe-art gyms, large swimming pools, squash and badminton courts, over 100 varied fitness classes, even an ice rink.

Music for the soul for a great cause inbrief

N

O one could have forseen how Tracy Ralph’s life would change overnight. The mum of two small boys was fit, healthy and due to run a marathon this year. Then she was taken to hospital Christmas Eve, terribly ill with pneumonia. By Christmas Day she was put in an induced coma. Her life has been saved by amazing doctors more than once after suffering complete organ failure and she has battled through meningitis, septasemia, deadly blood clots and bleeding on the brain. She came out of her coma on New Years Eve. However Tracy tragically lost both feet and her legs which have been amputated below the knee as well as her fingers. Various fundraising events have already taken place to raise funds for the best prosthetic feet money can buy, including a charity golf day at Ballards Gore Golf Club which raised more than £5,500. Another upcoming event though billed as

WE DESIGN, WE INSTALL... YOU LOVE!

‘a night of strictly old school moves and grooves’ is a Soul Music night taking place at the famoous ballroom of the Park Inn Palace hotel in Southend-on-Sea. Soul music fan Beverly Williams-Fisher, a colleague of Tracy’s at Debenhams in Southend’s Royals Shopping Centre, explains how her idea evolved: “One Saturday morning I was thinking, ‘what else can we do to raise funds for Tracy.?’ Then I thought of a soul night. I grew up with this music and have loved it ever since. I then spoke to the Palace to see if they could support it and the hotel’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Louise McEvoy jumped at the chance. I then contacted well-known club and radio DJ Dave Bishop, a family friend who was keen to support as much as he could.” Wristbands for the event which will take place on Saturday July 4 at 8pm, are £15 and on sale at Debenhams’ Clarins Counter and Utopia Coffee Lounge, both inside the Royals Shopping Centre and at the Park Inn Reception Desk. Sandra launched Singer Stage School based in Leigh on Sea, Essex in November 2001. It is renowned for giving the best all round training in the UK for young performers up to the age of 21. In 2007 it became a parttime (semi-vocational) training school, almost like a ‘minicollege’ operating Tuesday and Wednesday early evening till late and all day Saturday.

Sandra takes training her pupils very seriously but there’s no chance of anyone getting too big for their boots as she keeps students totally grounded, “we keep those Jazz Hands down to a bare mini-mum,” she admits. Once a year prospective students audition to join the school which incorporates Dance, Acro, ISTD Dance exams, Technical Jazz, Commercial, Tap. Drama

(all aspects) including Lamda and Screen acting exams and classes, Vocal coaching, Audition technique and workshops are held weekly with leading industry professionals for all aspects of dance, drama, and musical theatre. This year auditions took place in May but a few places have been held back to be offered to those who attend her Summer School, a ‘top of the range’

experience allowing participants to learn from experienced professionals in a fun, positive and very practical environment. Beginners will go away inspired, and more advanced talents will leave having learned many new things and being much closer to achieving their goals. This year’s Summer School takes place from July 27 to 31. Perhaps Sandra’s most recent success story is Isabel Clifton who can be currently seen on Children’s BBC in the starring role of Jacqueline Wilson’s creation Hetty Feather. This is the 13-yearold from Leigh on Sea’s first professional screen acting job. On landing the role the flame-haired young actress said: “Sandra told me the news that I had been made an offer to play ‘Hetty’ while I was helping at the stage school’s annual audition day. It was my best birthday present ever.” The fame has also been fun for Isabel who says she’s had the best time!. “I have been lucky enough to have been a guest on Blue Peter, meet Hacker and Dodge on CBBC and be on the panel for Q&A with the creative team and Hetty Feather author Jacqueline Wilson at BAFTA.”

Series two of the children’s drama has recently been commissioned with filming taking place later this year.

Other success stories:

BOBBY LOCKWOOD Bobby was talented spotted by Sandra when he was 6 and he joined her agency. Within a fairly short time he was offered the role of PATCH in Patch’s London Adventure for Disney Worldwide – 101 Dalmatian’s II. A selection of Bobby’s credits with Sandra as his agent were: Eastenders, Waterloo Road, The Bill (playing Taylor Little),

MAISIE SMITH Maisie joined the school at age 3 and a half. She joined WANNABEES classes for children aged 3 to 6 years of age at Singer Stage School. Sandra had a leading casting director down to audition the

younger students. They selected Maisie to read for the role of the young Elizabeth I in ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’ and we were all thrilled when she was offered the job. Maisie filmed with Scarlett Johansen and Natalie Portman. She went on to play the role of Tiffany for 10 years in Eastenders until last year when screen ‘Mum’ Bianca (Patsy Palmer) moved abroad. JJ in Break Kids, Mick in House of Anubus. His most recent credit with Sandra was playing the hit role of RHYDIAN in ‘WOLF-BLOOD’. Bobby won a BAFTA for his role.

Great days out Chris Manning explores the quaint riverside town of Kingston upon Thames and revels in the grandeur of HAMPTON COURT PALACE

T

HE royal splendour of Hampton Court Palace is so grand that to make the most of it my partner and I planned a mini break to give us enough time to experience its many highlights, plus take in some of the attractions that the Kingston-upon-Thames area of Surrey has to offer. Our bolthole for the weekend was Chase Lodge Hotel in Hampton Wick. This charming nine-room, 200-yearold, former magistrate’s house boasts plenty of cosy old-word charm and character. Each room is individually styled, some having the added luxury of a four poster bed and a jacuzzi bath. The owner commented that “people book time and time again for their fa-vourite room.” Chase Lodge is a favoured haunt of celebrities too. Rick Parfitt, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Brian Rix have graced the beautiful building with its gilded ceilings and stained-glass windows which dates back to 1810. Being in a prime position for some lovely walks along the River Thames, for our evening meal we took a stroll over

the Kingston Bridge to the bustling riverside restaurant complex and dined at the smart and contemporary Cote Restaurant which looks out onto the water. With an excellent selection of dishes I indulged in calamari as a starter and veal escalope for main, while my partner chose asparagus with hollandaise sauce and chicken and walnut salad with avocado to follow. Crème caramel topped off a well cooked and excellently presented three course feast. Kingston upon Thames is renowned for it’s great shopping opportunities. The huge, usually empty, beach is just over the creek so you can wade over (bring wellies!) at low tide or walk down to the end of Beach Road to the nature reserve and through to the beach. We have a list of birds spotted (34 in one weekend including Marsh harrier, linnets, Reed buntings, oystercatchers and kestrel) and can email it to you if you ask. Jaywick is about 20 minutes walk along the sea wall (about 30 minutes along the beach) where you will find pubs, shops and amusements. The Beach House is in the tiny hamlet of Lee-Over-Sands which is about three miles from St Osyth and about five miles from Clactonon-Sea in Essex. There are three bedrooms (two doubles with washbasins and one with single size bunk beds), a large living room with integral kitchen and an upper sun room and deck with wraparound views of the sea and river. The house is clean and comfortable and the Seventies-style shower won’t be winning any design awards but is actually very efficient. There’s parking for two or three cars along the side of the house and a slipway into the creek for the nauticallyminded. The real joy is the sheer tranquility, waking up in the morning to flocks of geese and sitting in the sun room or on the deck gaping at the views over the creek, sea, river and marsh. At night sit in the nautically-themed

Wellbeing

Fun in the sun - or is it?

Everyone loves a summer holiday, but it can also throw up some challenges for our skin. The obvious being sunburn and in some cases mosquito bites which can be really frustrating.

C

ONSULTANT Dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson, Dr Anjali Mahto gives her top tips on how to avoid holiday horrors such as these. “Sunburn is an acute reaction in the skin that follows excessive overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It causes direct damage to DNA resulting in inflammation and death of skin cells. The risk is higher in equatorial areas or at altitude, particulary in those with fair skin types. Sunburn in childhood or adolescence can double the risk of developing melanoma in later life. Whilst the key is to avoid getting burnt, mistakes can and do occur.” Here’s some simple advice on how to reduce the pain from sunburn and limit further damage: Act quickly and get out of the sun Cover up the affected areas and stay in the shade until your sunburn has healed. Wear loose cotton clothing that allows your skin to “breathe” over the sunburnt areas. Take over the counter pain relief Analgesia or painkillers can help relieve the pain and reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are ideal and should be continued for a period of at least 48 hours if there are no contraindications. Paracetamol will help with pain but has little effect on inflammation. Cool the skin Apply a cool compress to the skin e.g. a towel dampened with cool water for 15 minutes, or take a cool bath or shower. Aim to keep the temperature just below lukewarm. Make sure the shower has a gentle flow of water rather than being on full power. If blisters are starting to develop, then a bath is preferable. Do not rub your skin with a towel, but gently pat it dry when you get out. Moisturise After a bath or shower, use an unperfumed cream or lotion

to soothe the skin. Repeated applications of this are necessary to reduce the appearance of peeling and this may need to be continued for several weeks. Aloe vera or soy containing gels or lotions can be beneficial in soothing the skin. Aloe vera not only has a cooling effect on the skin but also acts as an antiinflammatory. Be wary of using creams or lotions that contain petroleum, benzocaine, or lidocaine. These can either trap heat in the skin or cause local skin irritation. Stay hydrated Sunburn can encourage fluid loss through the skin. Drinking plenty of water will prevent dehydration and help your body recover. Alcohol should ideally be avoided during this time as it will make dehydration worse. Use of mild steroid cream Using a weak steroid cream such as 0.5-1% hydrocortisone for 48 hours may decrease pain and swelling caused by sunburn and speed up the healing process. This is best avoided in small children. Leave blisters alone Try not to pop blisters as this can lead to infection and scarring. They will settle by themselves after a few days. In the meantime, treat the skin gently. “An estimated 10-20% of people are highly attractive to mosquitoes and consistently get bitten more often than their cunterparts. Whilst genetics are thought to count for up to 85% of our susceptibility to insect bites, scientists have a number of ideas as to why some of us are more prone to being ravaged by mosquitoes than others.” Why they are attracted to us in the first place. Blood type Research suggests that certain blood types are more attractive to mosquitoes than others. A large number of the population secrete saccharides or sugars through the skin dependant on their blood type that mosquitoes are able to sense. Studies as early as 1972, suggest that mosquitoes seem to prefer those with Type O blood. Mosquitoes land on skin with Type O blood nearly twice as often as

those with Type A. People with Type B blood fall somewhere in between this range. Carbon dioxide Mosquitoes are attracted to exhaled carbon dioxide via receptors in an organ known as the maxillary pulp and can detect their prey from up to 50 metres away. Consequently, those that exhale more gas i.e. often larger people with increased body habitus, are more likely to get bitten. Metabolism Aside from carbon dioxide,

mosquitoes also rely on other substances, often at close range, to home in on their targets. These include chemical and compounds secreted in skin and sweat, including lactic acid, uric acid, ammonia, steroids, and cholesterol to name a few. Strenuous exer-cise can result in a build-up of lactic acid which may make individuals more susceptible. Genetic factors are likely be involved in the composition of these substances that are naturally secreted by our bodies.

Bacteria Large numbers of bacterial species naturally inhabit human skin. Researchers have shown that certain bacterial subtypes present in large numbers e.g. Staphylococcus epidermidis, make individuals more attractive to mosquitoes whilst others e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, appear to have the opposite effect. It also seems that having a wide diversity of bacterial types living on the skin make it less attractive. Pregnancy Pregnant women are more susceptible to bites than their non-pregnant counterparts. This is, however, likely to be due to the fact that they exhale relatively more carbon dioxide and have a higher resting body temperature. Clothing colour Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours such as black and navy blue, as they use vision along with scent to locate their targets. It is best to dress in light colours such as white or pastels to reduce the risk of this.

How to deter the summer pests? Chemical-based insect repellent Diethyltouamide (DEET) is probably the most effective chemical repellent available and has a good safety record. Research has shown that a repellent containing approximately 20% DEET will protect the wearer for about 5 hours. It has a good safety record and weaker formulations of 10% or less are safe to use on infants from the age of 2 months. Other chemical agents available include icaridin and IR3535. They differ slightly in their effective-ness and characteristics but all work in the same way, producing an odour that is unpleasant to mosquitoes. Plant-based insect repellent There are a number of plant based chemicals that can offer some protection against mosquito bites. They are not as effective as DEET and are not recommended as the only protection in areas that are endemic to malaria. These include citronella, lemon eucalyptus, and neem to name a few. Minimising discomfort from insect bites Insect bites can commonly cause lumps (papules), itching (pruritus), and whealing (urticarial) of the skin. Occasionally, small blisters (bullae) may develop. There are a number of things that can be done to minimise discomfort. Antihistamines – taking oral antihistamines will relieve the itch and swelling e.g. cetirizine 10mg once or twice a day.

Mild steroid cream – hydrocortisone 0.5-2.5% applied twice daily for a few days can reduce inflammation and itching Calamine lotion to affected areas Cooling the skin e.g. with a cold compress The bites should usually settle within a few hours to a few days. It is important to avoid scratching the skin as this increases vulnerability to developing infection at the site of the bite. One of the many functions of skin is to act as a barrier to the outside world. If the skin becomes broken e.g. as a result of scratching, infection is much more likely to develop. If you notice pus or discharge in or around the bite, increased pain, redness or swelling, or swollen glands, then suspect infection. This may require treatment with oral antibiotics (usually flucloxacillin unless there is an allergy to penicillin) so attend your local doctor.

TAKE NOTE:

Aspiring authors

Local Author, Laurie Ellingham from Stratford St Mary has achieved what many writers can only dream about with the release of a debut novel The Reluctant Celebrity.

T

HE Reluctant Celebrity was previously selfpublished as an ebook in 2014, but after quickly achieving chart success was picked up by independent London publishing house Austin Macaulay. “It’s every author’s dream when they decide to self publish that their novel will

do well enough to be picked up by a publisher,” explains Laurie, “but it’s a tough and very crowded market. There are thousands of books out there trying to do the same thing. I am thrilled The Reluctant Celebrity will now be appearing in the book shops and I have high hopes that it will continue to be even more successful going

forward.” We spoke to Laurie about her love of writing and found out just where we can get hold of a copy of her new book! When did you start writing? In year four at Love Lane Primary School in Rayleigh. I would write little stories

is a totally unique, brand new bespoke hairdressing salon situated at number 80 Hutton Road, Shenfield. We ad foureighty™ will strive to create the perfect look tailored to suit each individual’s lifestyle, personality, hair texture, face shape and skin tone. So foureighty™ is far more than just a hairdressers, we are in the business of making people look, and feel, good. We are keen to get involved as much as possible with the local community. We would therefore like to offer to all Made In Essex readers a very exclusive introductory offer; 10% off all hairdressing services (offer expires 04/07/2015), please quote “Made In Essex offer” when booking your appointment. about orphans starting new schools. My teacher at the time, Mrs Noakes, was so encouraging, it kept me writing. You’re a local girl then? I grew up in Rayleigh, attending Love Lane and FitzWimarc School. We moved to Hockley, where my mum still lives, and I spend a lot of time in Southend where my father lives, by the seaside. I now live on the Essex borders outside of Colchester. Had you always wanted to write a novel? I’ve always loved writing. At one point I wanted to be a journalist, but quickly realised that the fictional world inside my head was more interesting (to me, anyway). How did the idea for The Reluctant Celebrity come about? The ideas I have for novels tend to start as one single idea, which plants a seed in my head and before I know

it, it’s grown into a full story. For the Reluctant Celebrity, I remember the exact moment I had my first thought about it - what if the boy who broke your heart at University went onto become super famous. The story grew from there. What books do you like reading and which authors inspire you? I’m definitely one for fiction, and love escapism novels. I like both women’s com-mercial fiction and crime thrillers. I’m currently reading Elizabeth is Missing, by Emma Healey which is so fantastically well written, it’s definitely a novel for me to aspire to. Do you have other book ideas in the pipeline - will

there be a follow-up novel? Absolutely! I’ve recently completed my second novel SNAP which I hope to see on the bookshelves in the spring next year. SNAP is also a light-hearted romantic read. I’m currently writing my third novel, which is my first non-romantic novel. It’s a challenge, but one I’m enjoying immensely. What advice/ encouragement would you offer those wanting to become an author? Keep writing! Never say, I’ll just do this job first then I’ll sit down and write. There are so many distractions in our lives that it’s easy to push writing onto the back burner. The more a writer writes the better they get at it. Keep going and enjoy the process.

Laurie will be signing copies of her debut novel on Saturday July 11, at The Epping Bookshop, on Epping High Street. “Any aspiring writers who have a question about writing or publishing, come along, I’ll be happy to answer them,” adds Laurie The Reluctant Celebrity is currently available as a paperback and an ebook on Amazon and most major retailers, including Waterstones Brentwood. Get your children reading this Summer Sarah Mears talks Record Breakers: Essex Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2015 “Talking with a child about a story they’ve discovered, a story that has given them a hunger to read more and more is a special moment in the day of anyone working in a library.”

D

URING the summer holidays, we experience that pleasure every day in Essex Libraries as children flock to join in the Summer Reading Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is a national reading campaign produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries. In Essex last year 38,000 children took part, that’s around one in every three primary age children. This year’s theme is Record Breakers and we are hoping for an even busier summer when it launches on July 11. The challenge, developed in association with Guinness World Records™ celebrates achievements from all over the world. When children join the Challenge they will be given a Record Breakers folder and task of reading six books with six stickers to collect. The stickers come complete with some fantastic and surprising records including the tallest living horse –called Jake- and the world’s biggest yoyo. Once children have collected all six stickers they will receive a Record Breakers medal and when they return to school, they will also receive a certificate. The Summer Reading Challenge is great fun but it also has a really important role in supporting children’s learning and development. Children have a completely free choice about the books they want to read and this with the motivation of collecting rewards can inspire them to read longer, more challenging books than they thought they could. For some children the Challenge is the time when they suddenly start to read independently for the first time. Previous years have seen Children really enjoy talking to library staff and young volunteers about their books and parents often comment that they love watching their children interacting with confidence with staff. Talking with their children about their books really brings families together. The Summer Reading Challenge helps maintain reading levels during the six-weeks holiday so that children are much better prepared for going back to school and for young children just starting school, the chance to participate

alongside older children also helps them make an easy transition to school. In some larger libraries children will also have the chance to visit a touring exhibition and have their photo taken next to some full sized images of Record Breakers and in others, children will be able to measure up to some fascinating facts. Families will be able to download a free Summer Reading Challenge reality app this summer to bring the amazing world of Record Breakers to life. Essex Libraries will also be participating in a national attempt to smash the world record for the most pledges for a reading campaign, twenty libraries in Essex including Chelmsford; Colchester and Rayleigh are official “pledge centres” and they will be collecting pledges on Saturday July 11 from families; library customers and children pledging to participate or support the challenge. For youngsters aged 10 and over there is a new arts and reading activity called ImagiNation. Young people joining will receive a log book and by reading two books and completing some fun arts activities, they will earn an ImagiNation lanyard to hold keys, pass cards etc. and a voucher entitling them to a free DVD loan. Little ones won’t be forgotten

Challenge that makes it so unique, is that it is supported by an army of young volunteers in our libraries who encourage children to join and talk to them about their reading. We are still recruiting volunteers so if you know a young person aged 14 or over who would like to volunteer visit http://www. essex.gov.uk/Libraries-Archives/ Libraries/Volunteering-Libraries/ Pages/Summer-ReadingChallenge-Volunteer.aspx The Summer Reading Challenge provides a great opportunity for children to read, have fun and develop those all-important literacy skills. It’s free and runs in all libraries and mobile libraries in Essex from July 11 through to September 5, 2015 during normal library opening hours.

Weston Homes announce 60% of phase one sold at Preston Hall

L

eading Home Counties housebuilder, Weston Homes has announced that 60% of the first phase of apartments at Preston Hall have sold to a range of buyers including first time buyers, couples and professionals looking to own a home at the prestigious development. Weston Homes has received over 400 enquiries from those interested in owning a piece of history, many of which are from London, the home counties and the local area. Bob Weston, CEO of Weston Homes commented “Preston Hall is one of a kind and we are not surprised at the overwhelming level of interest received for the scheme since its launch in February. The majority of purchasers have been from London and its surrounding areas but we did have one couple who flew in especially from America to be first in line to purchase an apartment in the opening weekend.“ The successful launch event, which took place in February 2015, saw the arrival of over 200 attendees to see the newly restored entrance hall and two bedroom show apartment, which opened with a glittering firework display. Situated in Aylesford, Kent, Preston Hall comprises of 36 luxurious one, two, three and four bedroom

residences, which consists of the restoration of a historic 53,686 sq ft Grade II listed mansion into a new residential address. Each of 36 residences have individual marketing names, unique layouts and features and include apartments, mews houses and villas. They range up to 2,255 sq ft in size, some with mezzanine levels open to spectacular double height living areas. Weston Homes have skillfully combined period details including wall paneling, fireplaces, ceiling coving and moldings with state-of-the-art specification including designer fully fitted Oakwood kitchens with quartz stone tops and Fascino sink and instant boiling water tap. Spacious stone paneled bathroom suites and generous living rooms and luxurious bedrooms result in new homes that combine history with all the facilities required for modern living. Located off London Road (A20) and dating back to 1102, Preston Hall was for over 400 years the country residence of the Culpeper family, relatives of the Dukes of Norfolk, whose descendants included Joyce Culpeper (mother of Queen Catherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII); Catherine Howard and Sir Thomas Culpeper, courtier to Henry VIII and

Preston Hall in 1904

Catherine’s secret lover, a liaison for which they were both executed. In 1848 Preston Hall was purchased by Edward Ladd Betts, a railroad baron, who sold Preston Hall in 1867 to rival railway baron Thomas Brassey. In 1914 the final family to own Preston Hall, the Sauber family, gifted the hall to the Red Cross, enabling it to serve as a hospital during WWI. In 1925 Preston Hall became a hospital for the Royal British Legion and finally between 1945 to 2012 it served as headquarters for the local health authority. Prices at Preston Hall start from £340,000 for the final remaining apartments in phase one. The second phase of homes is set to launch in Summer 2015. In the dog house Richenda Oldham goes in search of canine comfort and finds there are some seriously luxurious beds out there for discerning dogs (and their owners)

I

f you were to spend around 12-14 hours each day sleeping, you’d make sure you chose a comfortable bed, wouldn’t you? Well, that’s how long dogs spend actually asleep. For 30% of the day they are awake, but inactive, which leaves just 20% to run around and exercise. So it makes sense to improve the quality of a dog’s life by providing them with the best possible bed, based on the simple (but commonsense) principles of warmth and softness. There are an unbelievable number of different types of dog bed on the market, from pads and mattresses to solid foam ‘nest’-style beds or even sofas, so it’s a good idea to evaluate your dog and his needs first before going shopping. Even if your dog is allowed to share your chairs and bed, there will be times when you won’t want him to, but if he has a great bed of his own, he might actually prefer to sleep there... A simple checklist could be: • Breed • Size • Age • Habits

Furry friend: what dog could resist snuggling up on this luxurious faux Silver Fox fur dog bed? Fofo bed by Sasha & Me, £129.99, thepetbusiness.co.uk

Cover story: use this Molly Mutt dog bed duvet to cover an old dog bed or fill it with redundant pillows to make a smart new bed for your pooch, £16.99, www.easyanimal.co.uk

CLEANLINESS Unless you are prepared to buy a new dog bed every time your pet’s bed becomes too dirty and smelly to bear, then washability has to be top of a list of must-have dog bed features. It’s also important to control fleas by keeping the bed clean. Check to see whether a dog bed is machine washable, or at the very least if its cover can be washed.

DESIGN It’s important that you choose a style that suits your dog. It’s not just a simple case of big bed for big dog and small bed for small dog. Some dogs like to curl up tight in round beds with raised ‘doughnut’ sides, which makes them feel secure, while others like to stretch out, in which case a mattress or pillow design is a better choice. Other dogs like to sleep under a blanket, in which case a ‘cave’ bed (with a cover that is already attached) is ideal as it allows the dog to burrow beneath the cover. For old dogs with stiff joints, a well-padded bed that is easy to climb in and out of is essential, while for a dog that feels the cold, a raised bed (off the floor and out of draughts) with high sides, will help keep it warm. For anyone tempted by a ‘designer’ sofa style bed, which will generally have a solid frame, covered in either leather, or fabric, make sure that your dog isn’t a serial chewer. The same applies to rattan beds, which are irresistible to some dogs.

Basketweave: this smart Charley Chau raised dog bed is hand made in greywashed rattan and demonstrates that it’s possible to combine canine comfort with trend setting design, £210, www.charleychau.com

Snug as a bug: for dogs who love to sleep under a cover then a bed with a cosy pocket to burrow under is ideal, Charley Chau snuggle bed, £65, www.charleychau.com

DECK IT OUT! Make yo The warmer weather provides the perfect opportunity to show off your garden, with the flowers coming into bloom and the sun (hopefully) out for longer.

D

ECKING provides the perfect addition to any garden, creating a family-friendly, easy to maintain space for dining, relaxing, or entertaining during the long summer months. Outdoor balustrade can help to define the decking area, creating the impression of an ‘outdoor room’ and adding a feeling of spaciousness to your home by blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Richard Burbidge offers a wide range of decking balustrade in a variety of styles and finishes, so it’s important to choose the right balustrade to make sure they are in keeping with the overall look and feel of your garden. For cottage gardens and older properties Richard Burbidge’s traditional collection is an ideal option. It comes with a choice of handrails, three newel styles and six different types of infill. These include the straight lines and strong angles of the square baluster system; the simple, mininalist design of the stop chamfered system; and the decorative

appeal of the timber panel system. For spacious, family gardens the classic range is ideal, featuring a selection of design options in wood, metal and glass. From the sturdy feel of the square baluster system, to the distinctive ornamentation of the metal baluster system, and the American system with its chunky rail, baluster and square newels, there is something to suit every taste. Alternatively, for contemporary gardens why not consider Richard Burbidge’s FUSION® system, combining round hardwood handrails with aluminum rails and newels. Simple to install, it comes with 8mm toughened safety glass panels for a contemporary look that makes the most of a garden view while creating a feeling of safety and space. To make decking design easy, Richard Burbidge’s online DECKPLANNER™ tool guides you through the planning process, allowing you to plan your perfect decking system in just a few simple steps. How to get your Su with Kick Start Fat Loss and fitness instructor Helen Barness Don’t we all want to look our best when we go away, put the shorts on, get the arms out and flash a bit of flesh? O why does it always go wrong, or you just can’t ditch that belly and nothing seems to change? Here’s 10 reasons why you aren’t sizzling yet……

do lots and lots of exercise and don’t eat very much! Well we will come to exercise in a moment but if you are feeding yourself rubbish, all the exercise in the world isn’t going to give you the results you want. You won’t see those amazing changes you are after. Remember what is important here is that you are trying to improve your health and by doing this your body will change, you will gain confidence and you will see your strength and fitness levels soar! You will lose that bloated feeling and start to define and chisel that body.

Are you eating clean? How much heavily processed food are you stuffing into your mouth? Do you eat quick ready meals, diet yoghurts, diet or low fat products, these have ingredients in them that just won’t help flatten that belly nor help you shift that fat!

Are you staying hydrated? Do you even drink water? If you have soda in your fridge, get rid of it now!!! It does absolutely nothing for you! If you are drinking packaged fruit juice, there’s not much fruit in it and no fibre at all, so that’s got to go too.

S

What state is your fridge in? Do a fridge clean out NOW! I bet it hasn’t been cleaned for a while! Get some order into your fridge so you can easily keep an eye on when your healthy food supply is getting low and restock in time. Best way to avoid pigging out, is to have a healthy ‘go to’ shelf all year round! You have no start point other than looking at the scales! A picture speaks louder than words!! Yes I know we hate having our picture taken but if you really, really want to change your body, to lose weight, there has to be a start point and you need to see where you are now (you might not like it) but then you will really see the great results you achieve more clearly.

Have you got a daily mantra? You’ve got to keep yourself on track and have a positive mental attitude. Tell yourself daily I am great, I can do this! Say it morning and night. Don’t make excuses to why you’ve fallen off the band wagon each time. Make a commitment to your goal and just do it! Bet you thought I would be telling you to

Are you sleeping? If you are only getting a couple of hours each night, or you are waking up a lot then your body is not going to repair and rest itself through the night. Get to bed by 10.30pm if you aren’t working shifts and make sure you haven’t eaten right before bed so you don’t get indigestion. Try to leave about 3 hours from your last meal before you climb the stairs. Get into a routine and try to stick to the same bedtime and wake up time for at least four out of the seven days of the week. Your body will thank you for it. What’s your stress levels like? Rushing around all the time. Pulled from pillar to post? We have to get those stress levels down because if you are living on the edge all the time your body will not repair and grow stronger and then the weight just won’t come off easily. Also your energy levels will be really flagging which won’t make you feel like exercise. Try to be a bit more of a ‘No’ person so that you are not always helping people out.

Make some time to unwind each day, time for yourself. Get a bedtime routine that winds you down and don’t let your mind think about work or things that will wind you up again. Listen to music, do something that chills you out! So now to the bit that perhaps some of you don’t like — exercise… Exercise at least three times a week is a good way to start things off. Aim for 10 minutes higher intensity exercise so that your heart rate goes up and you can’t chat easily. If you workout hard enough with good technique, your body will continue to burn fat for up to 24 hours if not 48! High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to get results more quickly and try doing it outdoors whilst the weather is okay to get that feel good factor as well as Vitamin D! You want to be doing big whole body movements that are challenging. This is meant to work you hard.

Here are 10 fab fat blasting exercises to get you sizzling for summer!

If you’re looking for some seriously stylish accessories, The Foundry Design is a new and vibrant fashion brand offering women a fantastic range of contemporary leather bags and purses.

B

ASED in Shenfield, Essex, it has been running for around eighteen months. We spoke to founder Cheryl Penman to find out more. “Prior to starting the business, I worked as a senior accessories buyer at River Island and the Arcadia Group. My department grew to be a fair size and as well as buying the ranges, I also designed them too. Having studied Fashion Design at college, this was the part of the job I loved the most.” Whilst on maternity leave, Cheryl had the idea to start up on her own and the rest, as they say is history and The Foundry Design was born. “We offer quality leather pieces at truly affordable prices, all our products are 100% leather and designed here in England,” she says. “The collections are inspired by current and emerging fashion stories from the Catwalk to the Street and designed with great attention to detail, practicality and style.” Predominantly The Foundry Design sells items online, but stockists include selected boutiques such as

Cheryl, left and Rachel, Head of UK Sales ‘Laden Showroom,’ in Brick Lane, ‘Lucy’s Boutique,’ in Brentwood and ‘Lauren Cole,’ in Billericay. Browsing the website, there’s most definitely something for everyone. From clutch and cross body bags, evening bags, purses, shoulder bags and beautifully soft totes plus a quirky animal print collection. Other accessories include a range of delicate sequin embellished ‘skinny scarfs’ in colours including gunmetal, black and bronze, hats, skinny belts, iPad covers and iPad cases.

The Foundry Design’s ethical trading policies run at the very heart of the business. Rocking & Shocking

Matt Bolton is the founder, owner and senior stylist at foureighty™ hairdressing salon in Shenfield. The salon itself is by far the coolest in town so we thought we’d ask Matt his opinions on what he thinks is hot or not right now, the results are always surprising!

Rocking: Croft Pink port with lemonade and fresh strawberries a cracking pimms alternative. Sunny early summer days. Decent House being played through a decent system on a decent summer Sunday day party. Redwing boots. Bruce Jenner’s departure and Caitlin’s arrival (way hotter). Wimbledon starting soon. Long textured Bob’s with Killer Ombré. Our assistant Samie’s hairdressing face on training nights (pure concentration). That pic of Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Ibiza. Corned beef pie, mash and marrows. Cuddling like there’s no tomorrow. Meantime Lager. The courtyard at Sugarhut in Brentwood. Being fully booked all the way through half term when you expected to be really quiet. Smiling and being really nice to each other. Happy gatherings outside Lot in Shenfield on a warm summer Friday night social. My salon chairs arriving from Thailand. Being a Herbert.

Shocking: Warm lager. Ten Walls anti gay outburst on Facebook, 24 hours to kill your music career. Monday’s. Wimbledon starting soon and not being able to watch any of the matches because you’re at work. Les Dennis on Corrie. Jekyll House nights. People who wear white sunglasses. Pouting like a fish in selfies, girls you look so much better when you actually smile. The warm weather arrives and you realise you should have gone on that diet six weeks ago. Calling a halt to midweek drinking. Shaved Graduated Bob’s (shudder). The news, positive things do happen in the world every day, they’re just not reported on. My salon chairs arriving from Thailand nine weeks late. Jellies and thick rubber block heels, no girls, just no. Negative people, life’s just too short. That gangly weather bloke in the morning. Boys in spray on jeans and massive shoes.

On a plate… with

Steve Drake

Hammer (prior to opening my own restaurant Drake’s in Ripley) I would make fresh rosemary bread every morning using rosemary I picked straight from the garden.

What’s in your fridge at home?

Peanut butter and strawberry jam - for toast. It has become my new favourite breakfast

For years now Steve Drake’s food has blazed its culinary trail through the Surrey foodie scene.

Who has influenced your cooking the most?

Without a doubt Nico Ladenis influenced my cooking the most. His simple flavour –focused principles have stuck with me.

Why did you become a chef? I didn’t realise it at the time, but it’s because I love being creative and also pushing myself to do new things and I love learning.

‘F

LAVOUR-focused’ is how the chef, originally from Rayleigh, Essex, describes his food. Although classically trained, he has built on these strong foundations to develop his very personal style of cooking. His food is contemporary, and has been acknowledged

Where did it all begin?

Coming from Rayleigh, Essex, it all started at the Brookside cafe, where George taught me how to make bacon sandwiches and fry eggs. with a Michelin star for over a decade. Using top quality ingredients, he combines simple flavours to produce dishes that are deceptively modest, yet have incredible depth of flavour and texture.

What is your first food memory?

My first food memory is my Mum’s apple pie, it was never quite cooked enough, as the apples went in raw and all the juice went into the pastry. When I eat raw pastry it brings back those memories, and I quite like the taste actually.

Who are your favourite chefs?

I like chefs who follow their own path and have created their own identity; it’s a tough and brave thing to do.

What is your favourite dish/ ingredient?

Fresh fruit and vegetables I really like, but you can’t beat a roast chicken.

What is your favourite herb?

I have two - thyme and rosemary. When I was head chef of Drake’s on the Pond in Abinger

Your worst kitchen nightmare? Running out of salt and cling film.

What’s your last meal on earth, if you had the chance to choose? Home-made baked rice pudding.

About Drake’s Restaurant The interior of Drake’s Restaurant in Ripley, Surrey, has been sympathetically restored over the years by chefproprietor Steve and wife Serina and is now a stylish blend of contemporary touches complementing original oak beams and Georgian features. Drinks can be enjoyed in the oak panelled cocktail bar or pretty walled garden, weather permitting. A range of menus is offered, from the

superb value set lunch, through to Steve’s signature nine-course Flavour Discovery tasting menu. Guests with varying appetites and time constraints can still enjoy the whole Drake’s experience with the a la carte option of a two, three, four or five course meal. Dishes might include Lamb Loin, and Belly, Wild Garlic, Cumin, Pea and Onion or Jerusalem Artichoke, Veal Sweetbreads, Watercress, Cep Biscuit and there are always equally

LEARN HOW TO… Shaken and not stirred, Hilary Collins takes the Tutti Grille Cocktail Masterclass

C

OCKTAILS often conjure up happy holiday memories relaxing under palm trees in sunny climes, however, although most of us love a cocktail or two we’re quite often clueless when it comes to preparing them. Recently I was lucky enough to be invited over to the award-winning Italian restaurant, Tutti Grille at Freeport Braintree where their top Mixologist – that’s a cocktail expert between you and me, Grant Orchison, - had flown in from

Scotland to teach me the art of cocktail making. We’re first taught there’s three main ways to make a cocktail. We can shake and strain to make classics such as a Martini, we can blend a cocktail to make more creamy based drinks, or we can use the built method to stack ingredients to prepare a thirst quenching long cocktail. But that was enough of the theory I wanted to get behind the bar. First up we were treated to a Key Lime Martini, a refreshing twist on a classic.

Never before had I realised how much preparation went into each glass. Key Lime Martinis have to be served chilled and to create the desired temperature we’re taught a few basics. First we need to choose a long stemmed cocktail glass to stop our hands warming the drink once it’s been made. Then the glass and the cocktail shaker need to be cooled by placing ice cubes and soda water inside for a couple of minutes. Once the glass and shaker cool down it’s simple; remove ice and water and add

Steve was proud to be invited to join Slow Food UK’s renowned Chef Alliance, in recognition of his longstanding passion for using ‘forgotten food’ ingredients and small-scale, quality produce, locally sourced where possible. In addition, the restaurant’s kitchen garden has now been developed and produces some of Drake’s own vegetables and herbs to add that extra dimension to the menu. For over a decade, Drake’s has been awarded a Michelin star and continues to receive plaudits. It features in the top 100 UK restaurants for

Are you single? Think about forming an alliance with someone that allows you to cover for each other. While one person is holding down the fort, the other can be focused on other hobbies, interests and plans. Don’t think such a liberating arrangement is impossible; you just have to work to find it.

Hedingham Castle

A history book revisited

J

DO

UNE 15th marked the 800th anniversary of King John’s signing of the Magna Carta – a document that went on to shape the foundations of not only British democracy, but those of other nations across the globe. It was a group of Essex barons who led the group, including Robert DeVere, whose family owned Hedingham Castle. Today, a faithful recreation of a wooden Norman motte and bailey defensive structure is a popular visitor attraction on the site of Richard’s original castle. The magnificent stone keep that forms Hedingham Castle and commands the countryside around it from its elevated position, dates back to 1140 and would still be familiar to Robert DeVere if he was alive today. It is situated in 160 acres of glorious landscaped gardens which are a feast for the senses and the imagination alike. Hedingham described by many today as ‘romantic, beautiful, ancient, historic and wild,’ was built by Aubrey De Vere II, whose father had fought alongside William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion of 1066. Down the years, the De Vere’s would forge a reputation for loyalty to their king and fierceness in battle. Consequently, scions of the dynasty would be lauded for their exploits alongside Richard the Lionheart during the Crusades, with the Black prince at Crecy and Poitiers. The 11th Earl led forces at Agincourt and the family was later embroiled in the War of the Roses and fought

under Henry VIII in the Battle of the Spurs and was with the King at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Today the castle is a venue for a range of events, including jousting, archery, falconry, re-enactment battles, fairs, classic & vintage car shows, music concerts and theatre productions. More about Hedingham Castle visit www.hedinghamcastle. co.uk. For more information and about other places of historical interest in Essex, go to www.visitessex.com.

Journalists reveal choice of first car A SURVEY of motoring journalists and press relations staff in the car industry showed the Ford Fiesta Mk2 and Vauxhall Nova to be the most popular choice of first car. They may have been a bit basic, but the humble Ford Fiesta Mk 2 and Vauxhall Nova were the joint most popular ‘first cars’ in the

survey carried by industry press provider Newspress. The poll showed just how far the most basic car has progressed since the 1980s. The poll-topping Fiesta and Nova along with a Nissan Micra, which was so beloved of driving schools in its heyday that it would have been the first car for so many.

Vauxhall Nova

Third most popular car in the survey was, astonishingly, the Austin Allegro. If you fancy driving one of those, it is available to hire from Great Escape Classic Car Hire – www. greatescapecars.co.uk. Book early, though, as we hear it’s very popular for weddings. Among the highlights of the survey were some delightfully quirky cars. A DAF 33 which, according to its owner was “as quick going backwards as it was forwards,’’ a Citroen GSA that died when its owner ‘‘knackered the rear subframe when a particularly vicious Scandinavian flick went wrong’’ Finally, a bright yellow Reliant Regal three-wheeler that ‘‘rode its middle wheel on the strip of ice in the road during winter, making it impossible to steer.’’ The makers of Only Fools

Ford Fiesta Mk2 and Horses missed a golden comedy opportunity here! Of all the first cars owned by motoring journos and PRs the least powerful was the aforementioned Reliant Regal, while the beefiest was a Ford Capri RS3100. Among some of the more characterful features were a Renault Clio with a ‘‘spontaneously reclining (sometimes in motion) driver’s seat’’, a Hillman Imp from which ‘‘you could remove the ignition key whilst driving along’’ and a £250 Fiat Panda that ‘‘didn’t quite lead the simplistic, joyful dream promised by its Italian designer Giugiaro.’’ There was also one correspondent who decided that both the best and worst features of their first car were simply that ‘‘it was an orange Lada, need I say more?’’

Million mark for Europe-built Kia cee’d THE Kia cee’d has reached a major milestone as the one millionth car has been manufactured by Kia Motors in Europe. The cee’d has played a significant role in Kia’s sustained growth and success since its introduction to the European market nine years ago. The 1,000,000th cee’d to roll off Kia’s Slovakian production line was a high powered Kia cee’d GT

five-door hatchback, destined for a buyer in the Netherlands. The cee’d accounts for over 21 percent of Kia’s total European sales. More than 75,960 were sold in 2014, making it the brand’s second best-selling model in Europe after the Sportage compact SUV, which is also produced in Žilina. In the UK, Kia sold 13,189 cee’ds in 2014 and is the third best-

selling vehicle, behind the ever popular Sportage and Picanto. Later this year, Kia will launch the GT Line model to the range, which blends the style and sportiness of the cee’d GT and pro_cee’d GT with the versatility of the conventional cee’d model line-up. The new GT Line specification will be available for all three members of the Kia model family

In addition, the new cee’d GT Line signifies the arrival of Kia’s all-new downsized 1.0-litre T-GDI (turbo gasoline direct injection) engine and new seven-speed doubleclutch transmission in Europe. The new engine and transmission are engineered to improve fuel consumption and emissions while offering strong, willing performance and immediate responses to driver input The launch of the first-generation cee’d marked a new era for Kia’s growth in Europe, as the very first Kia model to be designed, engineered and manufactured exclusively in Europe. The cee’d’s name highlights its European origins, with a model code

indicative of Kia’s commitment to the continent. Codenamed ‘ED’ during the development of the first, standing for ‘European Design’. Meanwhile, the ‘CE’ symbolises the car’s conception, development and production in – and for – the Community of Europe. An instant success, 646,305 units of the first-generation cee’d were manufactured from 2006 to 2012. The secondgeneration of the car has found 353,695 buyers across Europe since its introduction, offering a high-quality, classy interior, striking exterior design and wide range of fuelefficient engines. Like every Kia car sold in Europe, the cee’d benefits from Kia’s unique 7-Year, 100,000 mile warranty.

Over 25% of respondents said they would own their first car again ‘in a heartbeat’ (appended by the Reliant Regal owner with the words ‘possibly my last’), while four of them still own them – of those, one is a VW Polo GT, another a Citroen 2CV6, another a Renault 5 and finally, someone still owns their Allegro…

Tuning tests for tractors ESSEX-based tuning specialist TDI-Tuning is carrying out testing and demonstrations on agricultural vehicles in June. Farmers are offered the opportunity to test-drive their tractor fitted with a TDI-Tuning box. TDI-Tuning agricultural tuning boxes are designed to optimise productivity in the demanding agricultural sector; as part of the firm’s on-going campaign of product development and testing, TDI-Tuning is looking for farmers interested in being part of a demo, and seeing their tractor’s performance and fuel consumption improved by fitting a bespoke tuning box to it. All work carried out is perfectly reversible, leaving no trace or lasting effects once the

tuning box is removed. With the agreement of the parties involved, media could witness the demos and publicise articles in trade magazines. “As part of our programme of constant product improvement, we are looking for a farmer who’s willing to lend their tractor so that we can measure and demonstrate the effectiveness of our latest, state-of-the-art tuning box. “All agricultural operations carried out by specialised machines, whether heavy or light ones, are made easier and more effective by the bespoke software developed by TDI-Tuning,” says principal Graeme King. If interested in taking part in the demo, please contact Richard Allin, TDI-Tuning 01245 392255.

Diesel engine a star in SUV from Mazda TEST DRIVE

W

ITH competition fierce in the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) sector, Mazda has come up with a vehicle that excels in many ways to make it stand up with the whole host of other Sports Utility Vehicle offering from all the major manufacturers. The star for me of the Mazda CX-5 is the diesel engine. A pivotal and important part of any car, it shines with performance, economy and emissions in equal measures. Utilising Mazda’s Skyactiv Technology principle they have produced a 2.2-litre engine that delivers 150PS of power, 380Nm of torque that pulls from very low down in the rev range with enthusiasm, only emits 119g/km of CO2 and returns on the combined cycle 61.4mpg, which is good going for such a large vehicle. The most impressive part of the four-cylinder diesel engine for me, was how quiet it was. The first time I started it up I was almost convinced it was a petrol engine, because there was none of the usual clatter normally associated with oil-burning engines. Even from cold it is ultra quiet and continues to be so throughout. Mazda’s latest ‘Kodo – soul of motion’ design language is very much in evidence with the large wide mouth front grille dominating the initial picture, but the attractive curves of

CHRIS MANNING the rest of the body gives the CX-5 one of the slipperiest bodies in its class with a drag coefficient of 0.33. On test was the Sport Nav version, with a list price of £27,195. Bumping this price up with extras such as the Soul Red metallic paint, which costs £660 (normally £540 for other metallic/pearl paint finishes), Light Stone leather, which does lighten the interior no end and safety pack at £800, you end up with a vehicle costing £28,885. The Sport Nav trim level certainly does get a lot of goodies. LED head and fog lights, reversing camera and 19in wheels plus impressive Bose sound system with nine speakers and 7in colour touchscreen with navigation built in are just some on the kit as standard. Keyless entry is another, which can be linked to the driver’s seat memory but its best feature for me as that you could leave the key in your pocket, simply press the black button on the driver’s door handle and it opens up. Similarly the engine start button fires the diesel into life with key safely tucked away. The interior is pleasantly furnished and seats

comfortable with electric adjustment, steering adjustable for rake and reach so it is not hard to find an ideal seating/driving position. The 7in touchscreen, which controls media functions, sat nav operation and music settings etc, can be accessed either by touching the screen or by a large rotary selector wheel by the gearstick. I preferred this option as continual pressing of the touchscreen covers it in irritating greasy finger marks and using the rotary dial means you can keep your eyes on the road for a lot longer. Driving the CX-5 it displays good road manners, only being unsettled by major road imperfections and corners well for such a large vehicle.

My only question mark on this particular vehicle on test was the six-speed manual gearbox which ‘snicked’ into second gear and the gate between second and third occasional baulked when changing up. Performance is exemplary, with the diesel engine pulling strongly from low rev and the sprightly performance is reflected in a 0-60 time of 9.2 seconds and on test it returned consumption of 46.7mpg according to the onboard computer readout. Interior space is good front and rear but the boot deserves praise as it is large, wide and flat but the only slight hitch is that the rear seat do not fold completely flat but Mazda have installed extra handles in the boot side panels to be able to flip them down.

CHELMSFORD CRICKET CLUB

Youngblood steps down as Leopards head coach DIVISION One champions Leopards have started the search for a new coach following the resignation of Robert Youngblood. After three years at the helm with the Big Cats, Youngblood wishes to spend more time with his family in the USA, making it impossible for him to concentrate on coaching in the top flight of the NBL. “I’m going to have to say no to coaching Leopards with a heavy heart,” said Youngblood. “I’d like to thank everyone for the great memories.” Leopards’ general manager Dave Ryan admitted that the Big Cats were sad to see Youngblood step down as play-caller saying: “Obviously we’re disappointed that Robert can’t continue as coach, but we fully understand why he feels he can’t commit for the season and respect his decision. We’d like to thank Robert for everything that he’s done for us over the last three years – it’s been a great time in the history of the club and no one’s who’s been involved would underestimate the massive part he’s played in it. He’s going to be a tough act to follow.” Having played for the original Leopards for

just over five years from their formation in 1994, Youngblood joined the new Big Cats as player-coach in 2012, leading the club to a National Trophy triumph and fourth place in Division in his first season. The 2013/14 season saw Leopards finish as runners-up in the league before they clinched the title with a game to spare in March. He had been linked with several jobs both in the BBL and with Leopards’ Division One Robert Youngblood rivals before making the decision not to coach at senior level in the 2015/16 season.

Leopards have announced their first title sponsorship deal in their 11 year history. The Big Cats have linked up with Ongar-based ICT specialists Levett Consultancy on an initial one-year deal and will now be known as the Levett Essex Leopards. Leopards' General Manager Dave Ryan was understandably delighted with the deal: “We hope that our sponsorship deal with Levett will enable the Leopards to remain as the top club in the NBL. We're all really looking forward to what will be an exciting partnership.”

A tale of six teams

W

HILST short of a disaster, this was a weekend on which Chelmsford’s ambitions took some dents and in the case of the league cup ended entirely. The highlights were an exciting win in the Warsop T20 and five wickets for James Arnold in a tight third team match. Chelmsford’s three top sides now have identical records of five wins and one defeat. This was good news for the third team but bad for the firsts and seconds who had perfect records hitherto. Despite a decent score of 288, Chelmsford’s lamentable record against Chingford continued. Dan Hagen and Jack Sterland made half centuries but a lightning start from Taylor and Potticary reduced the rate and MacGregor and Lawrence pretty much cruised past the target. There was real frustration for the seconds who lost by one wicket. A strong batting line-up was left wondering why games cannot be played on paper as they could only muster 153 and were bowled out with 9 overs of their allocation left. Boon (47) provided the backbone of the reply

but wickets kept falling leaving the last pair with 20 to get. They managed it with just three balls left; Humphries added an unbeaten 21 to his three for 14. An excellent bowling display from James Arnold helped the thirds record a tense victory at Buckhurst Hill. Chelmsford collapsed from 84 for none to 156 all out, Chris Drain (45) topscoring whilst Chipperfield (6-39) did the bulk of the damage. Five wickets for Arnold and two each for Craig Thompson and Harry Green helped secure a 15 run win. Tom Iliffe and Andy Rycroft rolled back the years with a big partnership in the fourth team. After a poor start, they rebuilt and prospered, Rycroft fell for 73 but Iliffe (100*) went on to complete a century and with support from Micky Burns (46*) took the score to 254 for five. Although Colchester made a good start through Gilhooly (59) and Chapman (54) they were never really up with the rate. Shaw (62) helped to secure full batting points and a draw at 209 for seven, Keith Goodman (4-35) bowling with his customary skill. The fifth team lost to Horndon

on the Hill’s third team but at least achieved a decent tally of points. Zish Panjwani (73) and Barry Clayden (48) continued the theme of golden oldies as Chelmsford scored 228 for nine. Jasper (4-62) bowled well for the visitors and there were wickets for Marshall (4-47) too. Hutcherson (73) and Witts (67) combined well before Chilvers (39*) guided his team to victory. Jack Campion picked up four wickets. Ben Turner was in fine form for the sixth team but ran out of runs before he could complete a century. Jonathan Tween and Peter Banfield took four wickets each as Leigh were restricted to 145 for nine from 40 overs. Turner batted throughout Chelmsford’s innings but the winning boundary took his score to 98. Hopes of a decent cup run also ended on Sunday at Hornchurch. Chelmsford’s innings subsided to 136 all out with Skipper (3-17) and Whitlock (3-16) amongst the wickets. Chelmsford fought hard and the match was in the balance until Max Osbourne (28) made some vital runs.. Anthony Hill took three of the six wickets that fell.
