ULTURAL projects in Essex can benefit from up to £2,500 through Essex County Council’s Culture in Essex Small Grants Scheme. Individuals, voluntary organisations and community groups who operate cultural projects for the benefit of people in the county of Essex are eligible to apply, and the next deadline for applications is next Tuesday, March 31. One society that benefitted from the last round of awards was the Colchester Chinese Culture Society who were awarded £2,000 for their Chinese Gala at Mercury Theatre as part of Chinese New Year festivities. County Councillor Roger Hirst, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Libraries, Planning and the Environment, said: “I am delighted to recognise the diversity of the organisations who have already received a grant through the scheme. “Representing differing age groups, our vibrant ethnic communities and those facing challenges due to disability, grant recipients have invested in projects to bring both even more art and culture to the county to enjoy. “The deadline for

applications to the final round of Small Grants has not yet passed, and I urge more organisations to consider applying for projects that can be helped off the ground.” Application form and guidance notes are available online at essex.gov.uk/ Activities/Arts Services/Pages/ Arts-Funding Some of the recipients who have received awards are: n £2,000 to The Munnings Art Museum, Dedham Vale n £2,000 to Loose Screws Amateur Dramatic Society in Rochford n £1,900 to a group of young artists in Chelmsford. CHOOL children in Brentwood are doing their bit for the environment, demonstrating just how easy it is to recycle food waste. Essex County Council, which is responsible for the disposal of the county’s household waste, is planning to launch a new food waste campaign later this year in line with its Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy, which aims to minimise landfill and drive new waste prevention and recycling initiatives. Many schools are already showing just how easy recycling food can be. In Brentwood, St Helen’s Infant School is among the schools which now have food waste collected. Although households in Essex are recycling and composting more than 52% of their waste, the county council’s ambition is to reach 60% by 2020. Councillor Malcolm Buckley, Essex County Council’s deputy cabinet member for waste and recycling, said:

“Unfortunately food waste still makes up a significant amount of ‘black bin’ household waste in Essex. “However, as many of the county’s schools are demonstrating, by taking a few simple steps we can go a long way to tackling that. “With food waste collections in operation in every district and borough in the county, any food left over can then very easily be recycled and I would appeal to residents to follow the lead of our schools in doing just that.” Sheila Rainsford, headteacher at St Helen’s Infant School, said: “When I looked into it I couldn’t believe how easy it was to sign up to have our food waste collected and recycled. “It is really important that younger generations learn about the environment and what they can do to help, and as a school we work hard to achieve that.” For tips on how to reduce your food waste, re-use and recycle, visit recycleforessex.com/

LITTER AWARENESS

LAUNCH EVENT

Hamleys comes to Lakeside

Winner Lucy Fox with Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr Vicky Davies and Adam Smyth, Brentwood County High School

The ground is not your bin WINNERS of a litterawareness competition were awarded prizes by the Mayor of Brentwood last week at Brentwood County High School. Brentwood Borough Council’s Streetscene team visited the school earlier in March to talk about the importance of not dropping litter and also recycling. Last week the Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Vicky Davies, presented the winner and runners up of the ‘Design a Poster’ competition.

Winner of the competition was Lucy Fox, who received a £50 voucher. The runners up were Niall Bryne, Sibel Yusuf, Alice Goldhill, Emma Ince, Amber Whitmore, Abigal Tentner, and Isabelle Bowsher. Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr Vicky Davies, said: “The pupils designed posters about what they had learnt during the litterawareness event with the theme ‘the ground is not your bin.’ ‘‘They were enthusiastic and wanted to continue recycling, which is what it is all about.”

The pupils were put into seven groups to collect rubbish from around the school and the surrounding areas including King George’s Playing Fields, Middleton Hall Lane, Shenfield Common, Ingrave Road, Madeira Walk and Mount Crescent, and separate what could be recycled. Adam Smyth, from Brentwood County High School, said: “It was delightful to see the whole of Year Seven taking part in the poster competition and celebrating the eventual winner Lucy Fox.”

NEWS FAIRTRADE IN BRENTWOOD

ENTERTAINMENT

Getting the message across

Essex has the Midas touch

MOST Brentwood residents will be familiar with the distinctive Fairtrade mark that often appears on products found in local stores such as on tea, coffee, chocolate and flowers. In 2009 a group of local residents got together and decided to work towards becoming one of the many Fairtrade Towns in the UK. By fulfilling the goals set by the Fairtrade Foundation, this was achieved in 2011 when Brentwood Borough Council was awarded Fairtrade Borough status. In 2013 Holly Trees Primary School was the first school in Brentwood to be awarded Fairtrade School status. On March 10 pupils from Holly Trees took part in a Fairtrade Findathon around Brentwood incorporating Fairtrade supporters such as The Body Shop and the Oxfam Charity Shop. For more details on how you can support Fairtrade visit www. brentwoodfairtrade.com.

He runs Team Midas, a music scouting and PR company whose acts regularly feature on The Voice, X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. Luciee Closier was one of Team Midas’ first ever Voice contestants in 2014. With this year’s show currently in full swing, Dean caught up with the talented singer from Loughton, and discovers how the show helped to inspire and encourage her as an artist. So what have you been up to since appearing on The Voice 2014? I have been actively gigging and performing at festivals. I supported the UKG Chronicle at Wembley Arena, supported Scouting for Girls at Festival Too in Kings Lynn, played at Looe Music Festival in Cornwall. I have also signed a Management deal with AT Music Group in Chelmsford and I am currently writing my debut EP along with a team of producers at AT Music.

I would 100% recommend anyone to apply for the show, I enjoyed the whole process. Who are your inspirations/favourite singers? I actually listen to and am inspired by all types of music and artists. From Eva Cassidy and Amy Winehouse, to Pixie Lott and Busted...

NEWS MONEY MATTERS

The March 2015 budget in a nutshell Financial Advisor Cliff Fowler simplifies George Osborne’s budget and how it will affect us

G

EORGE Osborne’s final budget before May’s general election delivered few surprises earlier this month, but the decisions made could still have a major impact on your day-to-day life. Whether you’re retired and reaping the reward of your hard earned pension, or a twentysomething scraping pennies together for your debauched weekend – here’s a guide to how the budget might impact on you. Single person: You’re probably aware that those under 65 and earning less than £100,000 don’t pay tax on their first £10,000 worth of earnings. Well, happily this will increase by £600 as of next month, before rising to £11,000 in April 2017. In addition, the higher-rate threshold will also rise from £41,866 to £43,300 in two years time. As well as taking home slightly more every month, people will also receive a tax break on savings. Basic-rate taxpayers will now be able to earn up to £1,000 in interest on savings before the government takes their cut. Though it is worth remembering all interest from ISAs is tax-free. Family (two adults, two children): Perhaps one of the more innovative and surprising announcements from Osborne was the introduction of the Help to Buy ISA. Targeting people saving for their first home, this move would see the Tories give savers 25p for every £1 deposited

– with a maximum set at £200 a month. There is a maximum government cap set at £3,000 – meaning savers can accrue £12,000 which is then bumped up to £15,000 courtesy of No.10. However, the bonus only comes in to affect when you purchase a property – and is only available on properties up to £250,000 outside of London and £450,000 inside the capital. Pensioners: It was good news for the majority of those already in receipt of their pension. Osborne announced a reduction in the lifetime allowance, dropping to £1m – which would still give those retiring an annual pension of £25,000 based on recent annuity rates. And whilst we’re on annuities – there was further potentially good news for the 5 million people in the UK currently receiving an annuity. Many felt aggrieved after it was announced last year that those over 55 would be able to access the entirety of their pension pot as of next month. However, as of 2016 pensioners may be able to buy and sell existing annuities. This is not quite set in stone as of yet, and plans could be scuppered should a new PM enter Downing Street in May. Should the Tories remain in power, it is expected this move will become law from April 1, 2016. The Government says selling an annuity could provide lump sums for relatives, pay off debts, or provide the ability to purchase a more flexible pension income produce instead. If you’d like to discuss any financial matters with an independent financial adviser, email clifffowler@thinkpositive.co.uk – or on Twitter @EssexIFA.

Safety first for residents

District Cross Country event

BRENTWOOD Borough Council and Safer Brentwood, hosted another successful Senior Safety Road Show on Monday March 16 at Shenfield Parish Hall, giving more than 130 members of the University of the Third Age Brentwood Branch (U3A) practical advice on how to stay safe. Members were made aware of the risks and dangers that exist around us every day. They were given tips on various issues including crime prevention, scams, online fraud, rogue traders, doorstep sellers, home security, fire safety awareness, carbon monoxide poisioning, falls prevention and more. They also received useful information from Essex Police, Brentwood Neighbourhood Watch, Home Instead, Safer Brentwood and more. They were also given a goody bag with information from the day including purse bells and personal attack alarms and other items. Councillor John Newberry, vice chair of the Safer Brentwood partnership said: “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home and not to live in fear of becoming a victim of crime. Our Senior Safety Road Shows are a great way to get this message across and to give older and vulnerable residents some practical advice on how they can stay safe.”

National vote to find nations’ favourite wild flower Wild plant conservation charity Plantlife asks public toHT-CM joinSALE in as part of celebrations the12/12/2014 charity’s 25th 260x163 AD (MIE)_260x163mm HT-CM SALE for AD (MIE) 09:12 Page anniversary 1

O doubt, you’ll have heard of the current search to find the nations’ favourite bird, well now it’s time to pick a favourite wild flower, too. And, with one in five British wild flowers under threat, and each county losing on average one species every two years, there’s no time like the present to help support our native flora. A national vote was launched this week to find out the nation’s favourite wild flower. The shortlist Viper’s bugloss of 25 flowers has been voted for by the membership of conservation charity Plantlife over the winter, and is now live for the public to vote as part of celebrations for the charity’s 25th anniversary. The results will be announced in June. Cowslip For Plantlife’s new Vice President, former Gardeners’ World presenter Rachel de Thame, it is a difficult choice: “Choosing a favourite wild flower is like being asked to choose a favourite child! For me, though, it would be snake’s head fritillary for its shy beauty and simple elegance. The flower has disappeared from 17 counties so I hope this national vote will show that we want this gradual vanishing of our wild flowers to stop.” Plantlife expert Dr Trevor Dines

commented: “I love this shortlist produced by Plantlife members it’s slightly bonkers and in many ways reflects us as a nation. There are country icons we can be proud of, like dog rose for England and wild daffodil for Wales. There are familiar plants we all know and love - bluebell, primrise and foxglove. But then there are some real oddities. Who would have thought chickweedwintergreen, a rare plant of woods in Scotland and northern England, would have made it on the list? On the contrary, cow parsley is seen as road verge weed by some but is clearly loved by many.” Log onto www. plantlife.org.uk/ wildflowervote to see the shortlisted 25 wild flowers, discover their conservation status and cultural importance and of course, place your vote. The shortlist: Bluebell - Primrose - Cowslip - Harebell - Poppy - Grass of Parnassus - Wood anemone - Bee orchid - Snakes head fritillary - Red Campion - Foxglove Chickweed wintergreen - Lesser celandine - Oxeye daisy - Meadow cranesbill - Thrift - Ragged robin - Pasqueflower - Dog rose - Wild daffodil - Viper’s-bugloss - Snowdrop - Cow parsley Cornflower - Honeysuckle.

NEWS PHOENIX FM

Striking a chord with the music of Jazz

Phoenix FM’s Adam Dyer talks about performing live on air and bringing the ‘sound of surprise’ to his listeners

A

DAM Dyer first worked in radio when he lived in Dartmouth in Devon. “I used to travel to a tiny radio station in Dartington called ‘Soundart FM’ and play my favourite CDs through the mixing desk. Carrying a bag of CDs around with me wasn’t exactly convenient. Luckily, at Phoenix it’s all done on a play out PC, using a program called mAirList and my mp3s, which of course don’t weigh anything at all.” Adam who is also a pianist and composer, ‘I play a lot of jazz and some classical music as well as teach the piano,’ has presented his show on Phoenix for just over a year. “My old music teacher at Brentwood School, David Pickthall, used to present a jazz show on Phoenix back in its early days, so I thought I’d go along and see if anyone was interested in having a similar show again. Phoenix promotes all sorts of different music, so thankfully, they offered me a slot.”

When thinking of jazz, many of us may think of Louis Armstrong or Benny Goodman, both iconic Adam Dyer musicians of their time. But as Adam explains, Jazz isn’t really just one style. “It’s a very broad term, encompassing everything from the early dixieland from New Orleans to the latest experiments with electronica. The one unifying factor is that jazz involves improvisation to some degree, so there’s always something fresh and new in the music. “The late jazz critic Whitney Balliett’s description of jazz as ‘the sound of surprise’ is one that I think captures it best,” he says. Despite there being lots of jazz musicians Adam loves, he is a big fan of Ahmad Jamal, a pianist (still alive today), who he describes as sounding unlike anyone else. “I saw him at the Barbican centre last year and was blown away that he is still making great music at the age of 85.” Since presenting his show it appears Adam has enjoyed every moment. Especially a couple of weeks ago when he got to play

BOOK SIGNING

A novel visitor to Romford

T

HE Liberty in Romford welcomed a special visitor last week, when bestselling crime writer Kimberley Chambers signed copies of her latest novel The Wronged. A crowd of fans turned out to greet her at Waterstones on Lockwood Walk. The 47-year-old author who lives in Romford, only started writing less than 10 years ago and boasts 10 novels to her name. Her novel Payback reached the top of the Sunday Times best-seller chart last year. “What you see it what you get with me,” says Kimberley. “I’m the perfect match for my books and I think my readers like that. I pretty much do what I say on the tin.” Following firmly in the footsteps of the queen of gangster lit, Martina Cole, Kimberley’s novels are set in the underworld of London’s EastEnd. But while her tales are undeniably violent with thuggery and crime lacing nearly every page, they are also realistic tales of families and the unbreakable bonds of blood ties. “Yes, there’s violence in my books,” admits Kimberley. “But I also write about mad old aunts and foul-mouthed nans. They’re real.” Despite leaving school with just two exam passes in English and typing, Kimberley’s always succeeded. “I don’t’ think exams mean that much,” she says. “You need to go out and learn about life. It’s more important to have some get up and go, then you’ll make your own way.” After the signing Kimberley commented: “It felt

fantastic to be at The Liberty. Romford is my home town and my favourite place to do signings. The Wronged is published by HarperCollins, £7.99.

the keyboard live on air with one of his guest bands. “ISQ came into the studio to talk about their latest album. Unfortunately, the drummer and pianist couldn’t make it, but I brought my keyboard along so that the singer, bassist and myself could play live in the studio. We played three jazz standards, live on air with no rehearsal. That’s the great thing about jazz - there’s a shared repertoire that allows complete strangers to play together for the first time, without sheet music or rehearsals, and it can still sound great! It was pretty hectic though - running from the mixing desk around to my keyboard and back.” Adam has an infectious love of music and performing it seems is his forte. This year he is working on material for a debut album. “I’m having regular rehearsals at The Vortex jazz club in East London. I’ll obviously let my listeners know once it’s recorded. I may even play some tunes from it on my show.” he adds. With such a unique show, what does Adam hope to bring to his listeners? “I hope that they occasionally go away and follow up on what they hear by buying an album of one of the artists I play or just by listening to it more. I’m a (relatively) young person, and I hope that perhaps this might encourage more young people to get into jazz.” Adam presents All That Jazz on Phoenix FM 98.0 every Monday night 6pm-8pm. www.phoenixfm.com. Combat Academy

T

• Anti-Bullying / • Personal Safety • Self Defence • Control & Restraint • Teambuilding If you’re looking to improve your fitness, confidence, and self-esteem, which increases personal safety, Combat Academy Self Defence training could be for you.

HE bootcamp-style training covers an entire body workout which significantly improves your chances in Self Defence. It is physical and realistic, teaching you how to survive an attack. The proven training techniques are derived from a millitary background and more than 20 years martial arts experience and delivered by Richard Mitchener a certified Instructor living in Rayleigh, Essex. Dad of two girls aged 13 and 10, Richard, whose career background is in Retail Sales and Marketing, has always enjoyed Martial Arts including Karate and Judo as a hobby. His interest, and obvious enjoyment in fitness led him to train and develop as an instructor. After training with the Combat Academy team for most of last year, Richard became fully qualified in October. Combat Academy UK provides training courses at various locations across the country. The majority of Richard’s training took place at their Head Quarters in Buckinghamshire. So why Combat Academy? “Self defence is a valuable life skill and someone being assaulted, robbed or stabbed is never far from the news these days,” he says. “It teaches reality-based self defence which means that it is effective in a real life situation. What makes Combat Academy unique is that the self defence courses and classes include techniques that can be applied in a variety of situations regardless of size and strength.” Richard explains: “The skills students learn include defending yourself at a distance, if grabbed and if taken down to the floor. On-going training also covers physical bullying and knife defence skills. The physical practice

is also combined with powerful psychological skills to take control of most situations, control fear and implant doubt in the attacker’s mind. Learning verbal commands to ensure that you say the right thing at the right time can actually avoid a physical attack.” But with many people shying from confrontation how can he encourage people to defend themselves? “The brain searches for a learned response to every given situation, we teach techniques that will automate these responses to an attack,” he says. “The more students become experienced in Combat Academy techniques the less likely they are to ever need these skills. It’s about technique rather than strength. The less we act like a potential victim and improve our approach to personal safety the less chance we have of becoming a victim.” Richard has launched Combat Academy Chelmsford, Beginners’ Self Defence programmes for men, women and youths in the last few weeks and venues in Rayleigh, Brentwood and Billericay will commence in the near future. “They are lots of fun, will help you get fit too and give those taking part the opportunity to meet new friends while learning essential skills,” he adds. Catering for all levels of fitness and experience the initial Half Day Induction course is only £25. It is a selfcontained session that can be attended on a one-off basis to gain an overview. All attendees receive a certificate on completion. These courses are also proving extremely popular on a ‘personalised / bespoke basis’ for Corporate Teambuilding events, youth groups, schools and even Hen Parties! All courses can be booked / arranged in advanced by

calling Richard on 07798 628 207 or emailing richard. mitchener@combat-academy.co.uk. For those wishing to continue training following completion of the Induction Course, Adult weekly sessions are £10 for 2 hours and Youths (ages 10 to 16) are £7.50 for 1 1/2 hours. So if you’re game to try something new that will benefit you both physically and mentally, Combat Academy is a winning combination. CROSS the Room is an established dating agency which was founded by Eleanor de Goni-Parkes over 25 years ago. When Eleanor returned to the UK as a single mother in her early 30’s, she realised that there was nowhere for singles to socialise, as bars and nightclubs tended to attract an 18-25 age group. She began running weekly singles nights at local restaurants and five star hotels throughout London and the South East, providing singles the perfect opportunity to socialise and meet each other in a fun and natural way. Singles nights are not just about meeting likeminded singles, they can rapidly improve your social life. So many people come along to events only to find that they make a whole new group of friends. TOP DATING TIPS:

1. Don’t take dating too seriously, when we reach a certain age we are very aware of what we want and don’t want from a relationship, specifically women. Try and relax on the first date and don’t ask too many “deep” questions, particularly about what they want from a relationship, they might not know what they want just yet. 2. Have reasonable expectations, just because someone is wearing the wrong shoes doesn’t mean that they won’t tick all the boxes in other departments, give them a chance. 3. Always meet a stranger in a safe place, it sounds obvious but with the web filled with so many online dating sites it is easy to become trusting in someone that you don’t actually really know. Don’t take a chance. A coffee shop or restaurant is the best place to meet,

Case Study Gill and Terry met through Across the Room.

Gill Oram through she’d never marry again after finding herself divorced with two children in her mid-forties. When best friend Jenny told her about About the Room the idea of dating again terrified her. She decided to give it a go and attended one of their singles events, a dinner dance at Down Hall Country Hotel Hotel. “Everyone was instantly chatting and laughing - it really didn’t matter if you fancied the person next to you or not. In-between each course the men moved so I met a lot more people than I’d imagined and felt my confidence growing,” Gill explains. Gill met Terry at another Across the

and always let a close friend or family member know where you are going. 4. Look good feel good! Buy a new outfit, get your hair done, this is not just about how you look on the outside it’s about how you feel on the inside and when we feel good about ourselves it shines out. 5. Be proactive! Don’t mope around feeling like you are never going to meet someone. Get yourself out there, join a local club, try a new sport or learn a new skill, you will be improving yourself as well as meeting new likeminded people. 6. Throw out the rule book! If you enjoy your first date don’t wait three days for a text or call that’s so 90’s! Tell them you had fun and arrange to meet up again, playing hard to get can translate as a) you are not interested or b) you are looking for a casual relationship! 7. Don’t go changing! Don’t ever try to be something you are not, there really is someone out there for everyone and you shouldn’t have to work hard for a connection, if it’s there it will feel so natural you can say or do anything. 8. Don’t find dating a chore. It’s so hard when it feels like everyone is settled down around you and you are the only one left, whether you just haven’t met the one yet or you are divorced or perhaps lost your partner, it can be hard to keep putting yourself out there, but don’t give up. You must believe that you will meet the right person, and you deserve to meet somebody who loves you for you. It will happen at the right time for you, and try to enjoy the journey like it’s your own personal adventure.

Room evening - a black-tie ball at Stockbrook Country Club in Essex. “I fancied him straight away,” she admits, “and we soon realised we had so much in common. He’d been divorced for many years and had grown-up children too. As we danced I felt about 18 again and I didn’t want to leave his side.” “One evening just five months after we started dating, Terry got down on one knee and proposed. He said he knew he was going to marry me from the moment he first met me - I told him I felt the same way. “We married at my local register office with a reception at a lovely country hotel. I felt the luckiest woman alive.” Gill credits Across the Room with helping her finding confidence in herself which was the key to finding love again. “I owe my happiness to them.” Across the Room 0800 591274/01449 722800/www.acrosstheroom.co.uk

Cooking with kids Culinary kids

Katherine Garner is a private chef, cooking class teacher, supper club host and caterer. She started her business Mustard Seed in 2010 and is passionate about all aspects of food. She runs regular cooking classes from her family home in Ongar and this Easter is hosting two classes for kids.

T

HAT’s what they say, isn’t it? Unreliable, unpredictable, smelly, bitey… and that’s just the kids! Well I have to say when I first set up Mustard Seed way back in 2010 I had no intention of running kids classes. I wanted to teach interested adults proper grown up cooking. And indeed that’s what I do! But over the past five years I have also recognised something else. And that is, that not all adults share my passion and enthusiasm for cooking! But that doesn’t mean that they don’t want to have a go – and would probably prefer some fun whilst they’re trying. They don’t mind if what they produce isn’t cordon bleu standard, they just want to get their hands in, have some fun, and make something cool to eat. And so my “Let’s make…” classes were born. More practical, more hands-on, a bit less serious, and you get to take your efforts home. So we have “Let’s make sausages…”, Let’s bake…”, “Let’s make pasta…” and “Let’s make sushi…”, amongst others, and these have proved to be very popular. But these were all designed as adult classes all the same. Now don’t get me wrong, I like kids. I have three of my own and I Katherine Garner love them to bits, but kids classes? That’s a different kettle of fish altogether. I have the utmost respect for teachers. I come from a family of teachers and always imagined I would also become a teacher, but a year out in France teaching English to recalcitrant and diffident French teens soon put a stop to that ambition. I realised that teaching depended so much on “who” was being taught and not just “what” was being taught. So it was with some trepidation that I first opened my classes to kids, over two years

ago. Parents had asked me if I would, and it seemed like an ideal solution to the somewhat quieter periods over school holidays. And so now, most school holidays, you will find a couple of kids classes in the calendar. Most popular are Baking, Pasta Making and Sausage Making so these are the ones I repeat the most. They lend themselves very well to working with kids. They’re practical, hands-on – in the squishiest, most fun way - somewhat noisy and sometimes chaotic, lots of fun, and best of all, the kids get to bring home their sausages, brownies or pasta. What could be better? That being said they are only slightly scaled down from my adult classes. We’re still doing real cooking here, with real ingredients and real equipment, so whilst they’re suitable for all ages I do say that under 12s should be accompanied by an adult. Many parents have found this a real blessing in the school holidays – bringing one or maybe two children for special one on one time and doing a creative activity together has proved to be more enriching than they anticipated. As well as occupying an entire morning, they get fed lunch, and then take home the products of their culinary creativity. Smiley faces all round. There are two classes being held in the Easter holidays at Mustard Seed HQ – a.k.a. our family home in Ongar. There’s a “Kids! Let’s bake…” on Tuesday March 31, and a “Kids! Let’s make Pasta…” on Wednesday April 8. Both classes start at 11.00am, and finish after lunch between 1.30pm and 2.00pm. Places are £25 per head – (adult classes are £45 per

head) – or £45 for one adult and one child. To book email: info@mustardseedcooking. co.uk or call 01277 363407. SIMILAR PROPERTIES REQUIRED FOR GENUINE DISAPPOINTED BUYERS!

Firstly, aim to understand how your property sits within the market – compare it online to similar properties in your area. Walking through the house with your estate agent to identify your property’s strengths and weaknesses really helps too (that’s what we are here for!). Look honestly through the eyes of a typical buyer and consider what aspects could be improved to enhance your chances of selling. For example, it may be that your home is in generally good condition, but the carpets let it down. Whilst you could take account of this in the price, new or professionally cleaned carpets can transform the presentation of a house. However, if your property is in need of a full re-furb, a new carpet could be a waste of money as the likely purchasers will be looking for a house that they can improve themselves to their own taste. A simple coat of paint can generally do wonders, but be careful not to let it look like you have simply “painted over the cracks”. If you are going to redecorate, then do it properly as any surveyor (and many purchasers) might wonder “what else is there that they have tried to hide?”. Finally, your eventual buyer may have a completely different idea of current fashions, so make sure that any changes are modern and neutral. Please remember that we are always on hand for honest advice.

Food P

IERO and sister Maria originally from Villa Castelli, Puglia have run the authentic Italian restaurant for nine years and its amazing cuisine and friendly atmosphere is second to none. What is your first food memory? My Mum’s homemade pasta with a simple tomato sauce and grated ricotta cheese. Who has influenced your cooking the most? I used to watch programme on television featuring renowned Italian chef Gualtiero Marchesi. His cooking lessons where

like a fable for me. Why did you become a chef? Being Italian I have a great passion for food and cooking. I have fun cooking for others and creating new recipes. I am lucky enough to have a job I absolutely love.

29

On a plate… Piero Amico,

with owner/chef of Piero’s restaurant in Ingatestone

What is your favourite herb? Definitely basil What’s in your fridge at home? Buffalo mozzarella never goes amiss in my fridge, olives, and my favourite cherry tomatoes.

Where did it all begin? At a catering college back in Italy and I’ve never stopped since Who are your favourite chefs? Antonino Cannavacciuolo” and Luca Montersino. They have great skills and simplicity in cooking at the same time.

What is your favourite dish/ ingredient? My favourite ingredient is tomatoes. I’m very fussy about a tomato origin, test and shape.

Come and sample the real taste of Italy at Piero’s Restaurant, situated in the picturesque village of Ingatestone in the heart of Essex.

Your worst kitchen nightmare? I will never forget when working in a two floor restaurant, the food we were about to serve to a party of 15 got stuck

in the elevator. Best cooking tip for a novice? Carefully watch the chef cooking, listen and enjoy. What’s your last meal on earth, if you had the chance to choose? Definitely purée of broad beans with CIME di RAPA (italian turnip top) cooked by my mum. BOOKS

A hotbed of crime novels Inspired by crime writer Martina Cole, author Sandra Prior jumped feet first into a world she knew nothing about and has created something special Growing up in Dagenham, Sandra was surrounded by four sisters, a brother, and loving parents. She describes her childhood as “sunny and safe”, and when she grew older headed off to other safe places, the Open University and the University of East London, where she graduated with a degree in Cultural Studies. A far cry from the mean streets where her books are set. Sandra’s crime trilogy Dangerous, Diamond Geezer and Mickey’s War, revolve around gangland family the Taylors and their gritty crime-ridden involvement with the East End Underworld.

Sandra was a successful business owner, but she couldn’t ignore the calling she felt from within. She had yearned to be a writer for as long as she could remember and credits fellow British author Martina Cole as her “inspiration” for getting into the crimewriting business. “In those days, it was simply a nice dream to have,” she says. “It wasn’t something I actually thought I could go out and do.” Sandra started writing the first of her three books Dangerous, and even though there were plenty of times when she thought about throwing the half-written

manuscript in the trash, she refused to give up on her dream. She stuck with the Taylors, and now the entire trilogy is proof that Sandra’s dream has indeed become reality. One day, she dreams of seeing her name on the New York Times bestseller list but in the meantime, she wants to write one new novel every year. Today, Sandra lives in Clacton with her youngest son, and her dog, who lets her write in peace as long as she takes him for walks on the beach when she’s done. Sadly, she lost her parents, her brother Johnnie, and her sister Shirley before Dangerous was finished. Sandra is certain that all of them are looking down, champagne in hand, saying, “Well done, girl. We knew you could do it!”

New Škoda Superb offers wide range ŠKODA has announced UK full pricing and specifications for the all-new Superb. The new model will launch later this year with the widest range of engine, transmission and trim level options ever offered to buyers of Škoda’s flagship model. Prices start at £18,460 for the 1.4 TSI 125PS petrol Superb S and rise to £33,840 for the Laurin & Klement 2.0 TDI 190PS diesel 4x4 DSG automatic gearbox. The new Superb will be available with seven engine options with additional option of DSG automatic and 4x4 transmissions. The engine range consists of four petrol and three diesel units with outputs ranging from 120PS for the entry level diesel 1.6 TDI to 280PS for the new 2.0 TSI engine. The launch range consists of four trim levels: S, SE, SE L Executive and Laurin & Klement, with each one offering higher specification and equipment levels than comparable models in the current line-up. Despite this impressive hike in specification across the board, Škoda has managed to make the new Superb even more affordable with the new 1.4 TSI S model available for £18,640 –

some £50 less than the current entry-level S model. The new Superb is 28mm longer and 47mm wider than its predecessor, while the 2,841mm wheelbase is 80mm longer, allowing for greater space within the passenger compartment. The boot is 30 litres larger than before, at 625 litres, expanding to a cavernous 1,760 litres with the rear seat backs folded. Despite the increased size, the new Škoda Superb is up to 75kg lighter than its predecessor. As befits a car at the top of the ŠKODA range, the new Superb is also brimming with new technology and the brand’s acclaimed Simply Clever features. Designed and engineered to make the new Superb safer and more comfortable, the new features include a clever Virtual pedal system that opens the boot with just the wave of a foot under the rear bumper and full integration of Apple and Android smartphones via CarPlay, MirrorLink and Google Android Auto. Safety and convenience features include Blind spot detection, Rear traffic alert, thirdgeneration Park assist and Traffic jam assist.

Congestion on the increase A SURVEY by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has revealed that congestion on UK roads is at the worst it has been for over 10 years. FTA’s survey illustrated the rate of deterioration in reliability on the road network at 55 per cent – which is the lowest it has been since 2002. The results from the survey of over 100 logistics operators are seen as an indication of the impact of the increase in domestic road freight activity levels, and further

highlight the rate of decline in the reliability of the UK motorway network. Karen Dee, FTA’s director of policy, said: “This survey is a clear indication that congestion on our roads has increased again, and drivers are getting stuck in traffic on a regular basis. Reliability on the UK road network is crucial for road freight operators. “The freight and logistics industry needs road infrastructure that it can rely on to ensure that products are moved efficiently and at reasonable cost.’’

‘Developing 140PS of power and 250Nm of torque, SEAT describe this FR model as a ‘warm hatch’ and it certainly is willing and lively performer’

Clever engine is a real gem

OR more than 30 years the SEAT Ibiza has been the Spanish car makers’s bestselling model globally. The fourth generation car available as a three-door, five door and estate, competes in this busy sector of the market against the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Toyota Yaris. On test was the almost top of the range Ibiza FR Black (only the hot-hatch Cupra sits above it) and is the first SEAT model to get the highly-advanced Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) engine. This 1.4-litre petrol engine has the technology to seamlessly shut down two of the engines four cylinders when they are not needed, to reduce fuel consumption. Developing 140PS of power and 250Nm of torque, SEAT describe this FR model as a ‘warm hatch’ and it certainly is willing and lively performer, making it an enjoyable driver’s car reflected in a 0-60 time of 7.8 seconds.

By

CHRIS MANNING The sporty theme continues with Ibiza FR Black running on skinny 215/40 17in black alloys with the brake callipers highlighted in red, sports suspension, twin rear exhaust pipes, figure-hugging sports seats trimmed in Alcantara, gloss black door mirrors and front grille frame and FR styling detail inside and out. Available with either sixspeed manual or seven-speed DSG auto gearbox (which

adds steering wheel paddles) performance is not forsaken at the cost of economy or CO2 emissions as it can return an official figure of 60.1mpg on the combined cycle and 109g/ km, putting it in the £30 car tax bracket. With built-in sat-nav systems proving to be an expensive option, when the current Ibiza was launched, SEAT introduced a docking station mounted on the dashboard to accept aftermarket units such as TomTom, dispensing with the mess of trailing leads and suction cup rings on the windscreen. Recently updated, the SEAT Portable System Live is now so advanced it can offer a whole host of information. For example, it can give live weather and traffic information using mobile phone data, plus can collect speed camera information and access Google maps. All information is displayed on a detachable 5-in colour touchscreen and can be used for sat nav, Bluetooth phone operation, vehicle information

computer and audio playback with and expandable memory SD-car slot. Climb aboard the Ibiza FR Black and the sports seat grip in all the right places and is height adjustable, and with steering wheel moveable for both rake and reach it is not long before finding a comfortable driving position. The engine really is a gem. It has enough get up and go to

make it enjoyable and I found flooring the accelerator pedal gives an extra, and enjoyable boost. Ride is on the hard side with the occasional ‘thump’ making its prescence into the cabin, but I expect a lot of this is done to the ultra low profile 215/40 tyres. Bonus, as you might expect of these tyres is great handling with excellent levels of grip and with the engine eager to

pull in all gears it is fun do drive. Price of the SEAT Ibiza FR Black is £16,845. But don’t forget that the model range is extensive and starts from £11,410 with a variety of different trim levels and body styles to suit all tastes and pockets. It is nice to see that for the first time the FR range is available in the estate Sport Tourer model as well.

Drivers care more about their car health than their own BRITISH drivers are taking better care of their cars than their own health, according to a new study from Halfords Autocentres. Research from the leading UK garage chain into driver behaviour has found that whilst 83% of motorists visit a garage regularly to keep on top of vehicle servicing and maintenance, only 17% of people regularly visit a doctor for checkups – with almost half admitting they only visit a healthcare professional when they have a problem. Commenting on the findings, TV’s Dr Pixie McKenna said: “In my experience, men are always more reluctant to see what’s going on under the bonnet when it comes to their health and it often takes something to be hanging off for them to take a begrudged trip to see the doctor. But when it comes to vehicles, it’s most certainly the other way around! “But no matter whether it is a medical or mechanical MOT, regular checks can be vital in identifying problems - be it the persistent cough that turns into pneumonia or the dysfunctional airbag that could cause more damage than good in an emergency.” The research from Halfords Autocentres examined what sort of mechanical and medical ‘ailments’ would be of sufficient concern to prompt people to visit the garage or their doctor. Feeling tired and finding it hard to get going in the morning would concern a third (31%) of people enough to seek medical advice but if their car experienced similar problems with starting nearly two thirds (65%) would seek technical advice without delay Halfords Autocentres’ Stefan Warhaftig said: “This study highlights that the structure of having an annual MOT does encourage drivers to take

better care of their cars, whilst the lack of one for health is encouraging risk taking. “Fortunately broadly similar numbers of people would have a new or unexpected physical pain or new or unexpected noise on their car (71% and 70% respectively) checked straight away but by this stage further additional damage could have been caused.” To find your nearest Halfords Autocentre, visit halfordsautocentres.com

Stampede for Mustang NEARLY 500,000 potential customers flooded Ford websites in the first month to design, specify and price a new Ford Mustang, available to order across Europe for the first time in 50 years. Data indicated that the new Mustang equipped with the 314PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine accounted for half of all configurations as opposed to the 418PS 5.0-litre V8 engine. Of the five largest European sales markets – UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – the powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine was most popular in the UK with 54%. The top colours were race red and black, each accounting for 20%.

Draw dents play-off hopes CLARETS’ boss Mark Hawkes made two changes in the line-up as skipper Mark Hughes returned to replace Redwood and Evans Kouassi for Mason Spence. The visitors seemed to be more dominant in the first half, despite the strong wind towards them, where they continued to raid the Clarets’ defence. Chelmsford had two chances in quick succession: Joe Ward took a corner which found Michael Cheek, but the prolific striker wasted his chance, then defender Robert Girdlestone floated in a free kick which fell to the head of Mark Haines but Ashley Timms caught the ball easily. Maidenhead were the first to score, when after a slow start to the second half, Jacob Erskine put the visitors one-up. After the goal, the Clarets made more chances whilst pressing higher up the pitch and Joe Ward took centre stage, his driving run towards the Maidenhead United defence saw him send a low, fierce shot into the bottom left hand corner, to level the scores 1-1. Win bouys promotion goal BRENTWOOD Town’s hopes of securing a play-off place look an awful lot brighter after they beat Ware 2-1 at Wodson Park. Tom Richardson put Brentwood ahead after half an hour, however, the Blues’ lead lasted just five minutes as Ware levelled from the penalty spot. Coulton made a good save to deny Richardson a second for Brentwood, but in truth Ware dictated play for the remainder of the half but were unable to make the

pressure count as the teams remained level at the break. Brentwood made a spirited start to the second half and it took them just 10 minutes to restore their lead as Christian Mbulu lost his marker to head in Bantick’s corner from six yards. Charlie Ledula tried to create something as Kem Kemal’s side looked for a response, but Brentwood remained in control. MARTIN VOLLER

Fightback comes too late Romford 1 Heybridge Swifts  3 Ryman Division One North

ROMFORD had most of the possession early on, but on 14 minutes conceded a disputed free kick in front of goal and ex Boro man Joe Pearman scored. Romford conceded a soft free kick on the right and Joe Pearman stepped up again and found the head of Sam West who made no mistake. Boro needed a good start to the second half but after only

five minutes found themselves with a mountain to climb after Adeyinka Cole made it three. More attacking intent was shown with forward Tyrone Scarlett replacing defender Ottley and they finally got on the score sheet after 66 minutes when Loui Hazelwood went on a carbon copy of his previous foray but this time finished it by smashing the ball past the keeper. Title showdown for Leopards at weekend

T

HERE’S a title showdown at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday as Leopards host Team Northumbria, tip-off at 4pm. Leopards go into the game on top of Division One with a 16-5 record, while third placed Northumbria have games in hand over second placed Derby and head into the weekend with 14 wins from 19 games. Leopards travelled to the north east in January and went down to their heaviest league loss of the campaign 82-73. Marc Stuetal’s side have only lost one of their last 10 league games and have also reached the national university final. Both sides face tricky away games on Saturday, with Northumbria travelling to Reading Rockets and Leopards playing at Leicester Warriors. The Big Cats faced the Midlands side twice in the same weekend in mid-January, winning 79-68 in the league at Harlow before crashing out of the Trophy at Brentwood with an abject performance that saw them lose 72-50. Warriors are still in the battle for a play-off place, and are ninth in the table with a 9-12 record.

With coach Robert Youngblood in the States attending his grandmother’s funeral, the Big Cats had a mixed weekend as they edged out basement side Newham Neptunes 73-66 in east London on Saturday before losing 58-52 against Worthing Thunder at the Brentwood Centre. The relegation-threatened Neptunes belied their lowly league position as they made the Big Cats work for the full 40 minutes before they picked up their 16th league win in 20 games. Dave Ajumobi led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds, with Courtney Van Beest adding 17 points and six boards. Will Ashby finished with 16 points against his former club, while Lawrence Brown had seven points and as many boards in just under 11 minutes of action. Leopards led for 34 minutes of the game, but in the end it was a strong finish as a lay-up from Ladi Brown and a jump shot on the break from Ashby that sealed the win.

BOXING

O’Driscoll crowned boxing champion LAST weekend 14-year-old Tony O’Driscoll became the Junior ABA GB champion. O’Driscoll, from Romford, boxed twice on the night at the Sheffield Ponds Forge venue, having already beaten three national champions to get this far. His first bout on Saturday was against Greg Lunt from Stokes

Staffs boxing club and O’Driscoll proved too skilful for Lunt and outboxed him. He then went on to box Mac McMeekin on Sunday to win the belt and the title. West Ham Boxing Club, where O’Driscoll trains, said he has trained so hard for this title and are very proud of his achievement.

Front row changes influence victory

Try bound, Henry Bird

BRENTWOOD travelled to Ipswich on Saturday with a rearranged front row due to the late withdrawal of Lewis Pratley. Jed Roman was drafted into the front row and the late change proved to be a master stroke as they dominated their opposite numbers. Brentwood started confidently with the half backs of Harris and Simpson keeping the Ipswich team pinned back into their half. Henry Bird took advantage by putting Brentwood 0-3 up. Brentwood’s clinical precision and support play was too much for Ipswich and again some excellent phases of play saw Henry Bird set free to score Brentwood’s second try which

A poor shooting performance saw the Big Cats convert just 23% of their field goal attempts, and they trailed 41-30 at the final break. But worse was to come as they went almost five minutes without troubling the scorers as Thunder built a 50-30 lead. Albert Margai finally ended the drought with a pair of free-throws, and Leopards went on to outscore the visitors 20-2 in the final five minutes. The closest the Big Cats came to an unlikely victory was when a Margai jump shot made it a five point game with 44 seconds on the clock, but a harsh unsportsmanlike call on Ashby ended the dream. he converted to give Brentwood a 0-17 lead. Brentwood’s third try was scored by Tom Simpson and converted by Bird to increase the lead to 7-24. The bonus try was scored by Stanier who outstripped the Ipswich defence with blistering pace to make it 7-29. The introduction of replacements Jon Wylie, James Cowen and George Bassinger gave some of the squad a rest. The final play of the game saw a try from the spirited Ipswich side to make the final score of 12-29.

GREAT Baddow High School Year 11 student Adam Wells and the U14 boys novice trampoline team of Josh Burdon, Blair Henderson, Marc Goss and Tom Ellis travelled to Cocks More Wood Sports Centre to compete in the National Schools Trampoline final. Adam was first up in the morning session and after a nail biting competition, his score reflected a routine that was performed flawlessly, earning him the proud achievement of a silver medal and second place in the National Competition. When it was time to complete the team routine, Josh, Blair, Marc, and Tom supported each other brilliantly, giving each other constructive advice on how they could improve their routines and therefore increase their points score. They all performed solid routines and were awarded points that reflected their performances. Following a nervous wait for the final results, the Great Baddow team were ecstatic to find they had finished second out of the whole of the United Kingdom, which is a fantastic achievement.
