IFTEEN Members of Parliament from across Essex helped Visit Essex launch the Live Local, Love Local campaign to encourage residents to explore, experience and enjoy this beautiful and fascinating county. The county’s MPs were invited to visit their favourite location within their constituency and help spell out the campaign’s theme. The destinations chosen reflect the fabulous breadth and diversity of attractions and venues throughout Essex, from Upminster Windmill to Colchester Castle. George Kieffer, chairman of Visit Essex, the official tourism organisation for the county said: “Our objective is to promote tourism, increase visitor numbers, and generate income for Essex tourism and hospitality businesses.’’ As part of the celebration, special offers are available at visitessex.com/livelocal with more than £500 of money-saving vouchers. In 2014, nearly £1million of additional business was generated for the county from tourism. The event coincides with English Tourism Week 2015 (March 14-22), a week-long celebration of events and activities across the country. “We’ve been delighted by the response from our MPs,” said Mr Kieffer. “They’ve chosen quite an eclectic mix of destinations in which to be photographed with their letter. Each location reflects the rich diversity of great days and nights out right across Essex – there’s never been a better time to discover this very special place outside your front door.”

NEWS FIGHTING FOR CHARITY

Boxers prepare to punch above their weight to raise money for men’s charity

I

S it possible to change lives with just three rounds of boxing? A new fight night pitches white-collar boxers against each other to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. More than 40,000 men are diagnosed every year and 1 in 8 men in the UK will develop the disease. So roll on March 26th, the night of the Fighting for Charity event which is taking place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, one of Britain’s best known boxing venues This new incentive aims to train city workers to become champions for the night. Sixteen ordinary men, in just a few months have been put through the kind of high-level training schedule that only professional boxers usually undertake. Organizer and ex-White Collar champion (UK and Europe) Jamie Toff, explains what the event means to him. “I want to give White Collar workers the chance to box at a famous venue. To be champions for a night and experience a sporting achievement unparalleled to any

other at this level, whilst raising money for a great cause.” Two of the sixteen fighters are from Essex. Tim ‘Bad to the Bone’ Sloan, 35 from Saffron Walden works for Miller Insurance Services. His motivations for fighting? “I love the sport and want to give it a try before I get too old. A very close friend of mine battled cancer in his early 30s so I am very keen to assist any cancer related charity. Chris ‘The Warrior’ Wood (pictured, left) lives in Upminster. The Business Analyst provides consultancy services to Lloyds Banking Group via his company CJW Technology & Business Analytics LTD. His motivations for fighting? “I’ve trained with organizer Jamie for a few years both on and off and I’ve boxed on one of his shows in the past. Back then it gave me confidence at a time when I really needed a lift. It was basically an escape mechanism that allowed me to forget the stresses of everyday life. I drew the last time I fought. This time I want to go one better.” Fighting for Charity, Thursday March 26, York Hall, Bethnal Green, 7.30pm. Tickets available online at Eventbrite.co.uk, from £30. In tune with a good sport

P

HOENIX FM presenter Chris Hood describes himself as a sports and music nut. He has worked for Brentwood & Billericay’s local radio station for the past year covering both non-league football and also sports that get very little media attention. You wouldn’t think from his confident presenting style that this is Chris’s first foray in radio. “I joined Phoenix FM at the beginning of last year as I was looking for a bit of a change of scene and a good friend suggested I look into doing some presenting for the station. I have always been a big advocate of radio and thought I’d try it out.” He ‘eased himself in’ as he calls it, side-kicking on Steve Robertson’s Between the Lines, eventually expanding into other shows. His first hosted show was in August with Midweek Matchzone. “Now I’m hooked and presenting two shows a week,” he admits. Phoenix Sport which Chris presents on Saturdays provides updates from around the country of all the goings on in the world of football, rugby, horse racing and other major events. On the show he also gets to express his love of music, playing current and past hits, as well as little gems, including some from his own vast collection. “Music is a big part of my life whether that be metal, prog or something a little less heavy.” Meanwhile, Midweek Matchzone, on Wednesday

evenings, allows him to delve deeper into local sport, with news from local league and non-league football sides and includes indepth talk with people from the world of sport. So what is it about sport he loves. “It’s the skill, people pushing themselves to their limit, right down to the tribal element,” he explains. “I will watch or listen to most sports if I can, from the morning of the Test match right through to the Oakland Raiders kicking off at the Colosseum. I have always loved sports radio - in my opinion there is something very special about listening to a winter Test match under the covers on a transistor radio, or listening to commentaries and opinion on my way to and from a football ground.” But it’s a love of local sport that he wants to share with his listeners. “The boys of Brentwood Town and Billericay Town spill their guts on the pitch, week in week out, the football is just as exciting and yet there doesn’t seem to be that local recognition. Therefore, I like to shine a light on sports and clubs, both local and national, that you don’t hear about. That isn’t to say that I don’t pay attention to the big matches and events – everyone is talking about them and so am I.” So which presenters have inspired him? “I look up to quality broadcasters, who are knowledgeable, but

n GET ON YOUR BIKE

Chris Hood don’t take themselves too seriously. Barry Davies demands respect for the great work that he has done as does Mark Pougatch and Mark Chapman. But more generally, I have always been a fan of Danny Baker and Nicky Horne. And I can’t not mention Eric Hall, I learnt a lot from working with that man (Chris co-produced sports and music manager Eric Hall when he presented a show for Phoenix last year), although I don’t think they were all good habits.”! Tune into Chris Hood on Phoenix Sport, Saturdays 3pm-6pm and Midweek Matchzone, Wednesdays 6pm-7pm. Phoenix 98.0 FM, www.phoenixfm.com.

Mum2mum Market nearly new sales Everyone knows that having a baby and raising a family can be incredibly expensive. The Money Advice Service says that the average price of bringing up baby in the first year is £2,800, excluding childcare. So take note, as with a bit of know-how you can save up to a whopping 70%-90% compared to buying new on the high street. One of the Mum2Mum Chelmsford Markets

S most baby things have very little wear and much of it is virtually unused, nearly new sales are an Aladdin’s Cave for new parents who need everything for their baby, or for those wanting to update their child’s toy box or buy clothes for kids that are constantly growing. Second-hand does not have to mean second-best! For those expecting, the best time to get started with preloved shopping is when you are pregnant. Plan to visit several sales, as you might not get everything in one go. Also, the first visit can be overwhelming when you see the huge range of goodies up for grabs. Mum2mum Market provides award winning nearly new sales nationwide. In Essex they operate established monthly sales in Havering, Chelmsford and Billericay with new markets starting shortly in Corringham, Southend and Benfleet. Sue Fendt, the owner of Mum2mum Market in Havering says: “We enable parents to buy and sell, face-to-face, gently used and great quality baby and children’s clothes, books, toys and equipment; basically everything from sterilisers to scooters!”

“We consistently have fantastic feedback both from buyers and sellers. Bringing up kids is pricey and buying nearly new seems to be the obvious solution to stretching family finances as well as doing your bit for the environment by recycling.” Josie Cornhill, who organises markets in Chelmsford and Billericay commented: “Our sellers are parents with outgrown baby and children’s goods. They simply book a stall in advance, turn up on the day to sell and keep 100% of their profits. We provide them with fantastic tips on pricing and selling, so make it really easy for those who want to declutter and make some money in the process.” There are usually at least 20 mums selling at every Mum2mum market with a huge choice of baby and children’s items for sale. Everything must be in excellent condition. Goods range from

Buying: 1. Think about what you really need and make a list 2. Ask your friends what their top 5 baby items were 3. Bring someone to help you carry all of your bargains 4. Selling: 1. Don’t leave toys or baby items to gather dust in your garage or attic 2. Book a stall in advance, sort out only your best things to sell 3. Be prepared by planning your stall layout; label and hang clothes in advance 4. Be realistic about how much you can sell in one go 5. Be willing to haggle -- don’t take things home for the sake of a few pence

“I wish these sales had been on when I had my children. It makes you realise how much you spend on the high street when you see what you can get here, for a fraction of the price. I would have saved a fortune if I had bought this way.” Teresa C. stallholder at a Havering sale

Swedish stove manufacturer Primus has been creating products for outdoor use since 1892. They have been tested on expeditions by such pioneers as Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and Sir Edmund Hillary. Today, Primus is known for its reliable, safe and innovative products that make people enjoy their outdoors adventures – both big and small. They commissioned a study into the most common mistakes made when using an outdoor stove. Here’s what they found. 5 Most Common Mistakes made with outdoor stoves 1. Not allowing a stove to cool after use, or forgetting it’s hot before picking it up. 2. Using the wrong fuel or not checking the gas bottle fits before use. 3. Setting up to cook on an uneven surface. 4. Putting pan onto boil whilst setting up camp and forgetting about it, allowing it to boil dry and damaging the pots. 5. Refilling a meth’s stove prior to it being extinguished.Fire! (Obviously not a problem with Primus stoves that use LP-gas or pressurised liquid petroleum).

Education/Learning

S6 Tutoring Academy

Transforming Education in Essex It’s a tutoring company with a difference; the Essex based S6 Tutoring Academy is recognised as one of the most successful tutoring companies in the country.

W

ITH a string of industry and business awards under its belt, and a long list of success stories to its name, S6 is transforming the way in which children access education, and simultaneously setting the bar when it comes to providing world class tutoring. The company’s founder, Stephanie Williams, was born and raised in Essex, attending school in Billericay, graduating from Anglia Polytechnic University in Chelmsford, and settling down in Wickford, where she is to this day. She started her career as a secondary school teacher but quickly became disillusioned with the education system. She was confident that there were better ways to encourage children to learn and to support them in that learning. Her belief in her methods and her passion for teaching led her to establish S6 Tutoring Academy, offering private tuition to children, predominantly to prepare them for the 11+ examination and other private entrance exams. The company quickly grew thanks to Stephanie’s good reputation for getting results, and soon there was a dedicated team of S6 tutors working all over Essex, equipping children with the tools to succeed in both education and in life. Working with children of all ages and abilities the company has seen its students blossom over the years, and not surprisingly this has also meant that they have consistently produced outstanding 11+ results. Stephanie recognises that the main reason her company has been so successful, and the reason her students have achieved such phenomenal academic results, is because S6 has continued to evolve

in the way it delivers tutoring and motivates students. She started out offering basic tutoring sessions, but as the company grew, she soon identified the need to offer more resources and a wider variety of ways to help children gain knowledge, retain knowledge and apply that knowledge. The company is noted as a trailblazer when it comes to the use of technology to support learning, and as such they quickly developed a downloadable S6 app, which was received extremely well, right from its launch. It soon became clear that with more and more children having access to technology, and indeed feeling more comfortable with using it in education, the natural progression for S6 was to develop an online hub, where students and parents could track progress, and access motivational tools and test zones. The rationale behind the hub was to reduce the paperwork and the administration involved with teaching, something that Stephanie felt very strongly about from her own days in the traditional education system. With the online hub instantly marking students’ work, flagging up areas where they may need extra help, and providing personalised feedback, Stephanie’s tutoring team became free to do what

this observation, ensuring that they do best… teach! the children were fully prepared The hub also bridged the for the stress of sitting such an communication gap between important exam became a priority tutors and parents, with parents for Stephanie. To help students being able to instantly see where learn to cope with the pressure, their children were struggling S6 decided to set up or indeed succeeding, mock exam sessions, allowing them “The following the exact to intervene or company quickly format of the 11+ offer praise and test day, nerves encouragement in grew thanks to and all! the right areas. These exam papers will be available to purchase as an additional resource for her students and others wishing to get a feel for the 11+ exam style. She has developed these papers specifically to reflect the new style test, which is currently unchartered territory in terms of practice papers on the market, and she hopes that these will offer an insight to parents and students about what they can

Stephanie Will ia

expect for the 2015 11+ test. It’s been a very busy few years, and by Stephanie’s own admission, the growth of S6 really took her by surprise. Having not really had time to reflect on her achievements and after many people had asked her how it all came to be, Stephanie decided to write her biography so that she could record the whirlwind of the previous few years. As a result, Steps to S6 was published in 2014, recording her transformation from bullied school girl to award-winning entrepreneur. Some may say the book was a tad premature, as since its publication her determination to make the most of every opportunity has led to even further expansion of the business, and more doors being opened to her. In the next few months she will be taking the business overseas, establishing an international base in Dubai; and if that’s not enough to tackle, she also intends to develop a teaching TV programme, being filmed in Dubai and broadcast internationally to help as many students as possible to access the S6 tutoring methodology. Stephanie didn’t set out to build such a phenomenal career, or to establish such a dynamic internationally acclaimed company; she simply had a dream to improve academic standards, and a commitment to inspiring and motivating children to succeed. It is that dream and commitment which continues to drive her and her company forward, and what she hopes will continue to see S6 dominating the Essex and global tutoring scene. Visit www.s6tutoringacademy. co.uk for more information about any of the services offered by Stephanie and her team or call 0845 519 0489.

Books Easter is just around the corner and it’s a wonderful time of year; by now Spring has appeared with flowers in full bloom, the days are getting longer and there’s yet another school holiday for children to enjoy. Keep them occupied with some fantastic books. They also make the perfect alternative to all of that chocolate! Natasha Radford from Brentwood’s literary treasure-trove, Chicken and Frog Bookshop, picks five titles not to miss

‘Rabbits Don’t Lay Eggs’, Paula Metcalf (Board book) What can rabbits do? Rabbits don’t belong in the farmyard. So it creates quite a stir when Rupert pops up. He tries to make himself useful, but he can’t cock-a-doodle-do like Cockerel, and when he tries to lay an egg like Dora the duck, it’s a disaster! Luckily Rupert is good at digging, which

soon leads to the most unexpected farm job of all.

‘The Gruffalo Spring Nature Trail’, Julia Donaldson This handily sized activity book is suitable for even the youngest nature lovers and Gruffalo fans, and is full of great activities that are based around seeing and engaging with nature and the outside world. It’s about stopping, seeing, listening and collecting in a way that’s accessible and fun. Why not take a trip to Thorndon Country Park and take a walk around Brentwood’s very own Gruffalo Trail?

‘Easter Things to Make and Do’, Pratt & Knighton In this enchanting book you’ll find all kinds of exciting Easter activities. Just follow the

The Queen’s Orang-utan, David Walliams Written exclusively for Comic Relief 2015 by David Walliams, this spectacularly funny story is destined to be a hit. A bored queen. A birthday wish. An outrageous orang-utan. Everything’s about to go bananas! Walliams will be giving all of his proceeds from the book to Comic Relief. BAD BLOOD

Blood makes you related. Loyalty makes you family. In the underbelly of Soho’s organised crime ring, everyone knows that retired boxer Harry Woods is not one to mess with. And that goes double for his family. Harry has it all: the big house, the flashy cars, and an abundance of wealth. As much as money talks in his world, Harry knows deep down the only thing that really counts is family. Haunted by the sudden death of his wife, he’ll do anything to protect his children, but truth is a heavy burden and hidden secrets can unravel even the strongest of bonds..

Without loyalty, family are bound together only by blood. BAD BLOOD.

Beauty and beyond “Jilla is a skilled Aesthetician and provides wonderful treatments.” This is just one of many glowing testimonials Jilla MalekMohammad has received from her clients who appreciate the services she provides, which are carried out with complete care and skill.

J

ILLA MalekMohammad’s new Aesthetic and Laser Clinic which opens in Brentwood next month, will offer an array of treatments from Skin Assessment/Peels and Laser Hair Removal, to Electrolysis and Laser Red Vein and Pigmentation treatment. Originally studying Fine Art in Cambridge, Jilla decided to put her artistic flair to practical use in the field of Medical Aesthetics. She started her training in Beauty Therapy and Electrolysis with the International Health and Beauty Council (IHBC) and City & Guilds of London. “My passion was in all forms of Art, Beauty, Health and

Medical Aesthetics, so the Beauty Therapy course was my perfect initial step to all I wanted to do,” she explains. “After my two years training I gained valuable experience and opened my own place within Toni&Guy in Cambridge. With them I performed many make up applications for photo shoots and fashion shows.” Jilla decided to expand her knowledge abroad and earned a huge amount of International experience and qualifications, working and studying in countries as diverse as Bermuda, the United States, Spain, Dubai and the Cayman Islands for 10 years. She returned to the UK in 2011 and, with working in the top Aesthetic & Laser clinics including London’s Harley Street and a Dermatology clinic in Chelsea, has earned a great

insight in different range of procedures. “While working abroad I kept up to date with most of the UK trainings for examples Sterex (experts in electrolysis) and the Finishing Touches Group (who specialise in training of semi-permanent make-up/micro-pigmentation treatments) and also had extra Laser and Skin Peel trainings in those countries,” she says. So how did the idea for the Brentwood clinic come about? “I eventually found out that I needed my own place to be able to fit in all my varied experiences and treatments, it seemed most clinics only had a few and that I have become specialised. I started looking for an aesthetic room with Doctors in London but this wasn’t easy; one day when I was mentioning it to my brother he suggested why I don’t work with him. He is the owner and Dentist of Devonshire House Dental Practice.

NEW

“This was last month in February and since then I have been very excited to get the Aesthetic & Laser Clinic up and running within my brother’s Dental practice in Brentwood. Jilla says it is the perfect opportunity for both of them as many Doctors/ Dentists and Dermatologists are now expanding their business to Aesthetics. “My brother can perform the Botox, Dermal fillers and even the teeth whitening he already does, along with his dental treatments and I can perform the rest. I am hoping my decision to bring my knowledge to Brentwood will be appreciated and I look forward to working closely with my brother.” Devonshire House Aesthetic and Laser Clinic visit the website www. brentwoodaesthetic.co.uk or call 01277 214879 and book your FREE consultation today.

Frills and lace for girls (think Shirley Temple, pretty dresses, matching frilly knickers, colour co-ordinated hair bow, patient shoes) and the type of clothing in Roo’s would recreate her look down to a tee. Boys too are well catered for with a traditional preppy-look with cute pullovers, oxford shirts, deck shoes etc).” Roo’s specialises in

European brands and is Donna and husband Danny’s second shop, the other in Colchester is closing end of the month so the couple can focus on the Chelms-ford shop which opened May 2014, their new website and online interest. The website will offer a ‘click and collect’ service as well as the usually postage option. It will be an additional service for Roo’s existing customers and hopefully a way to encourage new clients to visit the store. Alternative brands will be available on the website too, to broaden the range and hopefully appeal to a wider audience. However, it will still have a traditional Spanish feel about it. They have 11,000 followers alone on their Facebook page. “Anyone in the know when it comes to children’s wear will be looking toward the continent for inspiration as the demands for brands from Spain, Italy and Portugal is bigger than ever this year,” Donna explains.

“Here at Roo’s we are fully prepared, with new stock arriving daily. Fabulous items from designers such as Tartaleta, La Marquesita Real and Kidiwi nestle amongst household favourites such as Pretty Originals and Sarah Louise.” Donna adds that La Marquesita Real is her favourite brand. “Aside from the outstanding quality, their dresses include our favourite three things in abundance: frills, lace and big bows!” So what is the current on trend look for kids? “It’s definitely all about matching – shoes and bows, even brothers and sisters. Matching colours and fabrics help to create the desired effect. After all, what could be cuter than a little boy in shirt, shorts and loafers fully colour co-ordinated with his sister in a lace trimmed dress with matching bows and shoes.” Want to see more? If you’re anywhere near Chelmsford, pop into Roo’s and say “hello”, or check out the new website launching today at www.roosonline.co.uk From everyone at Roo’s, “adios” for now.

Modern and retro work well

A

T FIRST glance you could be forgiven in thinking that the all-new Ducati Scrambler is a custom shop special. The combination of retro styling and modern engineering has certainly been popular among specialist bike builders in recent years and a visit to any of the major motorcycle

shows will turn out incredible one-off By JUSTIN HAYZELDEN café racers, flat trackers and street scramblers built with this ethos in mind. The aim of creating such bikes is to achieve an enhanced riding experience by getting back

to basics. They’re stripped down, lightened, rebuilt and tuned in an effort to capture the pure essence of being on two wheels. Most of us can only dream of having the ability to build or bank balance to buy one, but what Ducati have done with the Scrambler is to have taken that spirit and made it affordable and available. It’s not the first time that Ducati have produced a Scrambler and there are clear styling echoes of the original 1960’s model in both the petrol tank and seat. The single round headlight and simple speedo assembly continue the classic look, but beyond that it’s all bang up to date. At the heart of the beast is an air-cooled 803cc 90 degree twin-cylinder motor producing 75 HP, its right side wrapped by a purposeful exhaust system that ends in a stubby upswept silencer – perfectly placed to experience the unmistakeable soul-stirring rasp that can only come from a Ducati. Seat height is low at just 790 mm, and with a wet weight of only 186 kg the Scrambler promises to be as manageable as they come. And it is an easy bike to ride. The firm suspension provides a sure footing at all

lean angles and feedback through the wide handlebars is excellent. Weight distribution is neutral, making the bike feel light and balanced, and the whole package works in synergy to inspire the rider with total confidence. Factor in the punchy engine with its glorious soundtrack and you have a thoroughly involving and addictive ride, guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time. The Ducati Scrambler is available in four guises – Icon, Urban Enduro, Classic and Full Throttle – with prices starting at £6,995. n Many thanks to Andy at Hyside Motorcycles of London Road, Romford for loan of their demo bike.

Success of i10 is deserved

H

YUNDAI have had considerable success with its popular supermini i10 – as it provided no-nonsense motoring in a car that was cheap to buy and run was easy to drive and containing a good level of standard equipment even in the base model to make it an attractive proposition. Building on that deserved success, the new secondgeneration moves the i10 benchmark a lot further with improvements all-round with bodyshell dimensions increases but still keeping it within city car boundaries. An increase in width by 65mm has seen it go from the narrowest to the widest in its class and passenger space is the main benefit of this extra dimension giving more shoulder room front and rear and the boot now up to a best-in-class at 252 litres and a nice wide opening tailgate for easy loading. Standard equipment on the SE model is good, with such big car luxuries as height adjustable driver’s seat, air con, LED daytime running lights, intermittent wipers, electric windows front and rear, Bluetooth with voice recognition and remote central locking. Add in cruise control with speed limiter, trip computer, USB and aux connection, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and steering wheel controls for audio, trip computer and cruise control – it has nearly all the creatures comforts you could need. 1.0-litre petrol engine, it has enough pep (plus a nice vocal sound) to return acceptable performance and feel lively and somewhat belies its slowish 0-60 time of 14.9 seconds. CO2 rating is 108g/km, with a claimed 60.1mpg combined fuel economy, which in real life, while I was testing the car returned an average of 49.7mpg. Getting aboard the Hyundai i10 for the first time I found the seat to be on the firm side and looking around the cabin which does have a spacious air to it, hard plastics dominate the dash area, but to brighten things up the coloured inlay that runs the full width of the dash is available in four different colours of red, blue, orange or beige. The central instrument panel contains nice large speedometer etc and having driven some cars lately with touchscreens to adjust just about everything, it was welcoming to see large rotary controls to alter the heating settings. Hyundai have taken considerable measures to reduce noise levels, with sound

Summer UK debut for new MX-5 MAZDA has begun production in Japan of the all-new Mazda MX-5. The models rolling off the assembly line at the Ujina plant in Hiroshima are initially destined for the domestic market, where sales are scheduled to begin in June, arriving in the UK later this summer. The fourth generation of the iconic two-seater perfectly embodies Mazda’s vehicle engineering philosophy: the pursuit of driving pleasure. The all-new model is the lightest MX-5 since the first generation and the first with SKYACTIV Technology. Engine choice in Europe is two ultra-efficient lightweight petrol engines delivering 131PS and 160PS. Additional highlights include a sporty KODO: Soul of Motion design, the lowest centre of gravity to date on an MX-5, and a people-oriented interior that’s optimised for open-top driving. It is also available with the MZD Connect infotainment system and a range of i-ACTIVSENSE active and pre-crash safety technology. First launched in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 instantly revived the market for affordable lightweight sports cars.

Some 26 years and almost 200 awards later, the legend is still going strong. With production surpassing 950,000 units in January, Mazda continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-

selling two-seater sports car of all time. Ahead of its arrival in dealerships later this year, UK customers can now register their interest and pre-order at Mazda.co.uk.

Sunderland is a winner BRITISH manufacturing was the big winner as the Sunderland-built Nissan Qashqai crossover and Note family hatchback scooped top honours in the 2015 Carbuyer Awards. The multi-award winning Qashqai – the original crossover – was crowned Best SUV and 4x4 by the influential motoring website Carbuyer, while the Note was named the best car for under £150 a month. The models were judged by Carbuyer’s expert panel on the areas of most interest to real new car buyers, including running costs, practicality and reliability. James Wright, Managing Director of Nissan GB, said: “Both the Note and the Qashqai were designed, developed and built by Nissan here in the UK and so it’s great to have them recognised in this way by one of the nation’s leading motoring websites.

Spence opens his account MASON Spence opened his goal scoring account for the club to dent Gosport’s play-off aspirations. His scrappy goal after just ten minutes was enough to seal the win for the Clarets, their first win in five games. Joe Ward picked the ball up from Jack Bridge before aiming a cross towards the far post. Spence peeled away from his man and tapped home from close range to net his first goal for the club. Composure soon became evident among the City players as they settled into the game, restricting Gosport to limited chances. The hosts were sent out early for

the second-half with manager Pike clearly aggrieved by the first half performance. The question was whether Chelmsford could sustain their high-intensity performance that was recognised from all quarters in Privett Park. Gosport put four up front in a bid to steal a late point but were dealt a hammer blow when Rory Williams was shown a second yellow for a late foul on Cheek. The Clarets exploited the space and took the three points back to Essex. ADAM MAY

Promotion chances missed BRENTWOOD Town missed the chance to move up to fourth as they were held to a goalless draw. Sherwin Stanley and Robbie Rees had the Blues’ best chances, but they couldn’t unlock the visitor’s determined defence. Brentwood made five changes to their starting line-up, including giving striker Michael Osei his first start for the club. The first real goalscoring opportunity fell to Brentwood in the 28th minute as Ollie Bowles’ thumping goal-kick flew straight through to Stanley who beat keeper Richard Heyward but had his shot cleared off the line. Brentwood made a positive start to the second half and created a couple of early chances. Four minutes in Rees and Stanley combined on the edge of the box, allowing the former to shoot at goal, but Heyward saved with his legs. began in very much the same vein with lot of the action taking place in the middle of the park Ethan ended a Rangers breakaway but they were always dangerous on the break and a freak free kick found the back of the net making it 0 – 2. As ever the Rangers, when on the break, scored their third.

League title closer as Leopards edge a win

R

OBERT Youngblood’s team moved another step closer to the league title on Sunday with a thrilling 63-60 victory against fourth place Derby Trailblazers. A noisy Brentwood Centre crowd were treated to another thriller as the Big Cats again did it the hard way, coming back from a 14-point deficit in the second period to all but end Derby’s title hopes. Leopards were missing Ashby, Zupanc and Winegarner due to the university finals in east London, but Brentwood-based Ashby raced back after the game and he hit the crucial basket with 15 seconds remaining to seal the win. Margai led the Big Cats with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Richards had three first period triples on the way to 14 points and seven rebounds. Ladi Brown and Courtney Van Beest each finished with eight points, and it was the home side’s three-point shooting which proved key in the end as they converted 11 of their 25 attempts from downtown. Margai and Richards twice started the threepoint display as Leopards raced into a 9-4 lead but that proved to be as good as it got in the first half as a pair 7-0 runs from the visitors saw them go into the first break 21-15 ahead. It didn’t get any better for the home side in the

second period as Derby opened with a 6-1 run and although Ladi Brown hit a jump shot in reply, a three-pointer from American Chris Shalvoy made it 32-18 with 6:38 remaining in the half. But Leopards finally showed signs of life as Van Beest beat the shot clock to drain a trey before Derby coach Matt Shaw collected a technical foul for disputing whether the shot had gone off in turn. Ronnie Baker converted the free-throw and Ladi Brown hit a jump shot to complete a six-point offence. Margai brought his side to within three as he drained from downtown with 77 first-half seconds remaining, but it was Derby who finished stronger to lead 39-32 at half-time. That lead remaining intact for most of the third period before a 9-0 run capped by a pair of Ajumobi free-throws briefly gave Leopards their first lead since the opening minute, but Derby again finished strongly to tie the game at 49 heading into the final break. Margai put the Big Cats up by one heading into the final five minutes before Alex Denholm scored his only shot of the game to send Derby

Brentwood Crostyx

into the final three and half minutes with a three point lead. But that proved to be the final time the visitors would score, with some excellent defence from Leopards and scores from Ladi Brown and Margai put them ahead before Ashby sealed the victory. n Leopards will look to continue their push for the NBL Division One title with a double header this weekend. The Big Cats travel to Newham Nepturnes on Saturday before Worthing Thunder are the visitors to the Brentwood Centre on Sunday, tip-off 4pm. DAVE RYAN

SHENFIELD IN YOUTH CUP FINAL SHENFIELD Football Academy have reached the Youth Conference Cup National Final after a fine team display to triumph 1-0 over Halifax Town. Shenfield started brightly, creating early opportunities from the wing play of Joe Cutmore. Halifax offered very little going forward and were marshalled expertly by centre half pairing of Ellis Ashworth and John Burgess.

HOCKEY AFTER last week's unfortunate defeat left Brentwood relegated to Division Two east, Brentwood had little other than pride to play for against fellow strugglers Crostyx, who needed to win both coming games to stay up. Quick passing and movement off the ball gave Brentwood much of the possession, however Crostyx playing route one tactics hit Brentwood on the counter-attack and gained the lead. Brentwood finally converted their chance after a goal-mouth scramble saw Alex Henderson bundling it in from close range to bring the scores level at half time.

Albert Margai basket-bound for Leopards

Pushed forward by the desire of midfield General Liam Smith, Shenfield created yet more chances through Lomotey. They settled the tie on 65 minutes, when Cutmore danced into the penalty area and and pulled the ball back to an unmarked Lewis Scott who made no mistake with a neat finish. The team will now play Gateshead FC in the final.

New coach proving positive

FORMER professional squash player Jack Jago is helping return Brentwood School to former glories with a coaching programme that took the school to within touching distance of the most prestigious finals in the squash calendar. Jack, who became Brentwood’s senior coach last September, helped guide the Under-19 team to an impressive victory over Harrow School in the National Schools’ Championships. That put the team of Richard

Horswill, Robert Pearson, Harry Burr, Ben Loader and Rishi Patel into a play-off with pre-tournament favourites Lancing School from Sussex with a place in the finals at stake. Brentwood School has a strong squash tradition with current world number 8 and 17 players Peter Barker and Daryl Selby among its alumni. The team pushed Lancing all the way but were narrowly edged out By the closest possible margins 3-2.
