MAJOR JOBS BOOST

The building of a new Thames Tideway Tunnel will bring hundreds of new jobs to the county

THURSDAY 12 MARCH 2015

ISSUE 021

Around 450 people attended the first recruitment drive in Chatham

T

HE creation of as many as 600 jobs is the prospect when work starts next year on the construction Thames Tideway Tunnel – and the search for staff has come to Essex. The £4.2billion project is the construction of a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal River Thames from increasing pollution. It will create jobs and apprenticeships, and create the next generation of maritime workers to support the construction and to build their careers to 2023 and beyond. Chosen partner of the Thames Tideway Tunnel project, Jobs in Maritime.com, are inviting anyone interested to attend a recruitment event to be held at

the London Cruise Terminal, Tilbury on Thursday, March 26 from 10.30am to 4pm. Here they will learn more about the project, meet some of the people involved, find out about job roles and be able to register their interest in job opportunities when construction starts in 2016. Anyone not able to make the event can still register their interest by visiting www. jobsinmaritime.com or attend a further Essex event to be held in Harwich on May 28. The project will tackle the problem of overflows from the capital’s Victorian sewers for the next 100 years and will enable the UK to meet European environmental standards.

Dr.Winifred van Rensburg

Starting in west London, the proposed route for the tunnel follows the route of the River Thames to Limehouse, where it continues north-east to Abbey Mills Pumping Station near Stratford. There it will be connected to the Lee Tunnel, which will transfer the sewage to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. Peter Green, CEO of Jobs in Maritime, says: “We’re committed to ensuring the Thames Tideway Tunnel creates a lasting legacy for the people of Britain, creating lasting careers that continue beyond the construction of the tunnel. Our event at Tilbury will give anyone interested the chance to find out all they need to know.’’

MERGENCY 999 Fire Service control operators have gone on strike for eight days, as Essex fire chiefs continue to ignore cost-neutral alternatives that could avert the industrial action. Not only will this be the longest strike to date but all the strikers are likely to be women. The control operators walked out at 7am on Tuesday, March 10 and will not return until Wednesday, March 18. A new imposed shift system has seen some emergency control operators having to leave their jobs or drastically reduce their hours and pay, with many more considering their future with the Service. Riccardo la Torre, chair of the FBU in Essex, said: “Essex County Fire and Rescue Service like to portray themselves as a modern employer.

‘‘However, here they are forcing professional women out of their jobs and making life intolerable for many of those who remain. “The vast majority of the control operators are women, many with young families and caring responsibilities. They have professional careers that they need to balance with their family lives. “These shift changes are unfair and completely unnecessary as there are alternatives on the table that cost the same but would be more manageable for all those working in the control room. “It’s time the fire authority listened to their control staff properly and for common-sense to prevail.” Jo Byrne, who represents control operators throughout the UK on the FBU executive council, said: “Despite the willingness of Essex control staff to accept compromise, Essex fire service

management have just forged ahead and imposed the shift changes anyway. “These shifts disproportionately affect women with young families, and a number of our members have been forced to leave the service, whilst others have had no choice other than to reduce their hours

DO YOU know an unsung hero in the Brentwood area who has gone the extra mile to help their community? Brentwood Borough Council is looking for the most deserving people to be recognised with a Civic Award. If you know someone who volunteers for a charity, helps out with a sports association, works with children or makes a good contribution to Brentwood, then let us know. They can be nominated for their Lifetime Achievement or for their Service to the Community in 2014. Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Vicky Davies, said: “During my time as Mayor I have met so many deserving people who give their time to causes selflessly. Often they do

and pay to fit in with available childcare. Serious concerns have also been raised about the numerous IT failures and breakdowns in the new mobilising system resulting in control staff having to take details of emergencies by pen and paper in order to despatch fire engines.

Focussing on the future

Local woman Carmel Jane battles breast cancer and opens new photographic studio in Mountnessing

A

MOTHER-of-two from Brentwood is set to take the world of photography by storm once again following a four-year battle with breast cancer. Since picking up a camera for the first time professionally in 2002 Carmel Jane quickly built a reputation as one of the county’s foremost wedding photographers. And last week marked a huge stride forward for Carmel as the doors opened to her new state-of-the-art photographic studio in Mountnessing. But the journey to securing her first premises and expanding her business to employ ten photographers has been difficult and painful. Back in 2009 everything was great for Carmel, she was running her own business and travelling across the southeast photographing dozens of weddings, as she had done for a number of years. But a year later her world collapsed when doctors confirmed a lump beneath her right breast

was cancerous. By the nature of selfemployment then-single mother Carmel was forced to continue taking wedding bookings, despite undergoing months of gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the time. The alternative was “possibly bankruptcy”. “This is the first time I’ve really talked about my breast cancer, except with my partner Jim, who has been my “rock”, family and close friends and to be honest I think it’s important for us to share our stories and show that despite what is thrown at you in life, it’s important to try to keep going,” she revealed. “During ten months of chemo and radiotherapy I only missed one wedding booking because, to be honest, I really had no choice. “I needed to continue to earn to stay afloat, but also, I felt that I was part of the brides and grooms’ special day and part of me didn’t want to let anyone down. But it was so emotionally and physically exhausting that it was just impossible for me to continue with

the wedding schedule, so I had to find another way forward with my business.” Since completing her treatment at Queen’s Hospital, Romford, in June 2010, the 41-yearold is hoping to finally be given the all clear later this year. Several months after the radiotherapy sessions ended, Carmel, who has twin boys Iggy, 12, and Zak, 12, was forced into making a huge decision about the future direction of her work. The lifestyle and emotional commitment of wedding shoots, combined with effects of the illness, had taken its toll

and Carmel chose, instead, to focus on dance photography. “I absolutely loved shooting weddings and the feedback I received was always extraordinary, and it was regrettable that I had to give them up. But dance is such a wonderful and exhilarating art form and I find working with performers such a thrill.” Just last week she completed her first shoot in the studio at Stubbings Farm, Mountnessing. It is the only studio to specialise in dance photography in Essex. To find out more visit www.carmeljane. co.uk or call 01277 222175.

IONA Oakes holds the record for being the fastest woman to run a marathon on all seven continents plus the North Pole. This is all the more extraordinary given that the 47-year-old is a lifelong vegan and has also undergone a knee replacement. In between her training and marathon running, Fiona manages Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in Asheldham, Essex, which houses over 400 rescue animals. She gets up at 3.30am every day to care for

the animals before fitting in a 20mile run followed by the evening care routine. Last month she completed the (776), seven marathons in seven days on six continents to raise money for the animals. It was originally planned as a 777 challenge with seven marathons in seven days on seven continents but the weather in Antarctica stopped her from running the last marathon. But there was no stopping Fiona, she did another Marathon in Punta Arenas, Chile instead. Fiona said: “I did my best and feel very proud. However I wanted

paid tribute to Ben Hogarth, Grace Parrish, Emma Philpot, Emily Pohl, Jack Cooke and Thomas Philpot. The riders competed against a strong field of many local schools and finished the day winning the 90cm class by five seconds in the jump off. Grace Parrish took a tumble in her class but was delighted the team went on to win and hopes to be fully fit for the County Championships in April.

Essex-teen through to next round of The Voice

A new star is on the rise as Brooklyn Lammiman from Basildon wows the judges on the BBC talent show

H

ER dream is to be on a stage every single night. And soon, Brooklyn Lammiman’s dream could turn reality. The teen-singing sensation has successfully got through the battle rounds on The Voice to compete in the knockout stage where the judges must choose the best three Brooklyn performing on The Voice acts from their teams to continue on to the live shows. Made in Essex caught up with the Team Will contestant. What is your first singing memory? When my family and I used to go to my nan and grandads every Sunday for a roast dinner, once everyone had finished their food, my nan, my sister and me would go into the kitchen, turn all the lights

off and put the cooker light on and we’d pretend that we were at my concert and I’d sing to them both for hours on end. That is a beautiful memory for me. Have you always loved to sing? Yes I’ve always loved to sing. My mum says even when she was pregnant with me I used to move around a lot when she played loud music so I guess that’s where it started. Who are your inspirations/favourite singers? Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj. What made you apply to be on The Voice? My mum had a big input on me going for The

Voice. We agreed that we thought the show was very genuine. How have you found the experience? Is it tougher than expected? I have absolutely adored every part of the show. Of course some parts are tough, it wouldn’t be right if it wasn’t. Every single person on the show including all the behind the scenes crew are amazing, they look after you and really push you as an artist. What are the judges like? Do you have a favourite? All of the coaches are great. If I had to pick a favourite then of course it would be my coach, will.i.am. He’s a great person and so passionate about his music. What are you hoping from being on the show what sort of artist do you want to be? I hope that being on this show people can understand what kind of artist I am and how in love with music and performing I am. What would you say to encourage other aspiring singers who want to get into the music industry? I would say to be yourself and don’t let negative energy get in the way of where you want to be. Brooklyn will be battling it out in the knockout stage of The Voice on Saturday 7.15pm BBC1.

ARTIN Day, of Heart FM’s Breakfast Crew, has agreed, under duress, to take on a challenge on behalf of The J’s Hospice – and pedalling 50 miles at their annual Pedal for The J’s event. Taking place on May 3, in Chelmsford, Pedal for The J’s offers experienced cyclists, beginners and families a range of routes through the beautiful Essex countryside. Setting off from Admirals Park, an anticipated 1,200 riders will be raising funds and awareness of The J’s Hospice. Su Harrison, Martin’s co-host has taken on several incredible challenges in the name of charity in the past – and even ran in the inaugural Chelmsford Marathon in 2014. Due to the friendly banter between the two of them, Su then set Martin a challenge – to support The

STUDENT CHALLENGE

In costume for the Royal Opera House A COMPETITION to design costumes for a Royal Opera House (ROH) production of Madame Butterfly has been the highlight for fashion students at Havering College of Further and Higher Education. Eight students in the second year of a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion course at the college in Hornchurch, Greater London, have created Japaneseinspired clothing for the characters in the forthcoming production of Puccini’s poignant opera. The ROH Design Challenge 2014/2015: Madame Butterfly gives students from Creative and Cultural Skills Academy Colleges the opportunity to test and develop their marketing, production and design skills. Entrants have to demonstrate knowledge of opera as an art form and produce a costume design informed by the Director’s vision. As well as already having attended a workshop day at the ROH in Covent Garden, the students will return on March 27 for a Matinee performance of the opera when the garments of shortlisted finalists will go on display and the winners will be announced. The ROH production will run from March 20 to April 11. For details www.roh.org.uk/events.

Wake up to tea, a slice of toast and the sound of electronic dance music

P

HOENIX FM’s Rob Harvey presents a weekend breakfast show with a difference. “It is essentially a Saturday breakfast show that has seemingly transformed into a semi-specialist show,” he explains. Rob specialises in electronic music for which there is an active band scene and Rob is one of the few DJs playing it which helps to attract a worldwide audience for his show. Electronic bands such as Basildon’s own, Depeche Mode, Ultravox and Gary Numan are familiar names to many of us, especially Rob, who counts them as his all time favourite artists, but it’s new talent he is keen to promote on his show which is very much evident as he champions electronic bands and artists, both local and international. “There are so many great artists today and I love having the joy of introducing them,” he says. So why electronic music? “It’s quite a diverse field, with its influences within dance, rock/ pop music and film/tv score, it has a sound that has to have that futuristic vibe, drama and melody. I’ve always had a love of music created by electronic instruments, with synthesizers

sitting firmly there since the late 1970s, though the technology has been around a little longer. The excitement and impact made by electronic music touches us all, and has had my focus for years,” he adds. Seeing his show transform from a breakfast show to a semi-specialist show doesn’t seem to have put his listeners off either. “My listenership has supported the changes and influenced the way the show has become since it started back in 2010. As well as regular show content I like to interlace it with my comedic sense of fun and lighthearted style.”

Rob, a former RAF Reserve Officer, works fulltime for local government. He has lived and worked within the county all his life. He joined Phoenix in 2009 after hearing of their work and was keen to offer his time adding another string to his radio experience bow. “I have worked within the radio industry since 1989, mostly as a presenter for hospital radio to local community radio. I also worked with a few companies who were working towards a full time licence. For example I presented with Active FM who eventually gained a license and became Romford’s Time 107.5FM.” He credits Phoenix for having a diverse music content and strong belief in championing local bands and artists. “The station seems to speak on so many levels whatever age or background and has a very progressive style of community radio.” Tune into ‘Rob Harvey’s Saturday Breakfast Show’ (7am to 10am) - containing, music, local events, comedy, regular guest interviews, gig picks and fun media news. Mother’s Day

Editor of spabreaks.com Bonnie Friend selects the perfect spas for a Mother’s Day treat

MOTHERING SUNDAY 15TH MARCH

Make her day I

T’s pretty hard to argue with the fact that a spa day or break is just about the most perfect Mother’s Day present in the world.

It doesn’t matter what stage of motherhood you are at, or how old you are (Spabreaks.com just arranged for a 95-year-old woman to go on her first ever spa break with her daughter), quality time plus pampering is hard to beat. However, finding the ideal venue for the occasion – that’s a little trickier. So on that note I thought you would like to hear about some of the places where myself, and a few rather knowledgeable colleagues, have spent some seriously happy occasions with the most important women in their lives…

Manor House Hotel, County Durham

My dear friend Danielle is a hard taskmaster when it comes to finding the perfect spa, so the fact that she took her mum and grandma to Manor House Hotel in County Durham is testament to its quality. You will be pleased to know that they raved about its cosy atmosphere and historic setting because it made for the perfect location for a spa treatment/afternoon tea combo. www.spabreaks.com/ venues/manor-househotel-county-durham

Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa, West Sussex

It’s only a small hotel with a little spa, but Spread Eagle

has more charm than venues twice its size. Couple that with the most beautiful Mother’s Day spa package called ‘Cherished Moments’, which includes a choice of two treatments and a glass of bubbly and it’s no wonder it’s a tried and tested favourite for quality time. www.spabreaks.com/venues/spreadeagle-hotel-and-spa

Congham Hall, Norfolk

One of the stand-out features at Congham Hall is its beautiful herb garden. Naturally we are assuming that Mother’s Day will be accompanied by blue skies and sunshine so this provides the ideal place for a wander in the fresh air away from the world, followed by a cup of tea and good spa treatment! www.spabreaks.com/venues/ congham-hall

Harte and Garter Hotel & Spa, Windsor

Sitting by the pool all day isn’t for everyone. Sometimes a general day of pottering is part and parcel of relaxation. Harte and Garter is in the centre of Windsor (literally a stone’s throw from the castle), which also means it’s within easy reach

of a walk around the beautiful park and the little shops and boutiques that add to the city’s charm. So, retail therapy first, facial second, and tea and cake to finish? www.spabreaks.com/venues/harteand-garter-hotel-and-spa Made in Essex readers can take advantage of a special discount which can be used to purchase spa vouchers at any of the above, or other spas on the spabreaks.com website

Book some Mum time

Mothering Sunday is the perfect excuse to take time out of your busy lives, to either celebrate being a mum or thank your own for everything that she does for you. And what better to way to say thank you, than with a thoughtful book or two, says Natasha Radford from Brentwood’s Chicken & Frog bookshop.

T

HE first title is meant to make you smile. There’s an awful lot of pressure on young mums to be perfect – to ping back to their pre-pregnancy weight, to stay calm in all situations, to breast feed...the list goes on and on. This book is the antidote to all of that:

How Not to be a Perfect Mother, Libby Purves Are you in need of a survival guide to navigate the baby years? Purves shamelessly describes how to cut corners and the book is filled with down-to-earth tips and amusing anecdotes. It’s sure to raise a tired smile with exhausted young mothers everywhere.

Love You Mum: Doodle & Dream, Christina Rose Give your mum the gift of relaxation with this inspiring colouring book. This book is packed full of beautifully detailed black & white illustrations, that will take your mum on a journey of de-stressing art therapy, while the gorgeous words & quotes celebrating motherhood will remind her just how important she is. Take your mum’s precious free time into a new and thoughtful dimension and show her your appreciation.

When Flora, James and their two teenage daughters are offered the holiday of a lifetime in a chateau in the South of France in return they jump at the chance to escape the confines of Clapham, the weight of the mortgage and anxieties over their future for a blissful break. But Flora didn’t anticipate a mysterious guest and a whole heap of family baggage coming along too. And with James developing a schoolboy crush on a famous singer and Flora distracted by ghosts from her past, their dream holiday suddenly takes some very unexpected turns . . .

Go multi …. for a fresh approach! We understand that many vendors choose to work with their preferred estate agent on a sole agency basis. This makes sense as you know that all viewings and negotiations will be handled by one person who (hopefully) is fully accountable to you for ensuring that your move goes smoothly. However, if your property has not sold quite as quickly as you had hoped, it may be time to consider spreading the net a little wider and appointing another agent - not instead of your current agent, but as well as. It need not necessarily cost you any more, depending on the type of agreement you have with your existing agent. A fresh approach and a renewed marketing effort, using different contacts and marketing methods can be just what you need at this sensitive time in your marketing. Selling is stressful enough at the best of times, so it is good to know that even if your first choice of estate agent has not yet produced a suitable buyer, that at least you have every angle covered. Please feel free to contact us for a confidential chat - we would be delighted to help you review your sale through a fresh pair of eyes.

Fashion Catwalk to Closet LIFESTYLE

Romford’s vintage treasure trove The Vault shares some of the fashion trends recently seen on the catwalks

A

FTER a cold, wet and down right miserable winter the first signs of spring are finally starting to show! Finally we can start putting away those wooly tights and look forward to some sun on our faces. And what better way to get ourselves in the mood than thinking about out summer wardrobes. DENIM Denim is making a comeback for Spring/ Summer 15, featuring on catwalks across the board. This season designers were determined to put their own stamp on everyman’s favourite fabric, with Burberry working it into cropped indigo mini-jackets, whilst Stella McCartney built her entire collection around a series of statement-topstitch separates.

RATRTRTRQTQ

You’ve tried everything, eat healthily and exercise but that stubborn muffin top won’t shift. Many of us are always looking for ways to tone up and get rid of those excess bulges for once and for all. Lipo Angel ICE. A nonsurgical, advanced fat freezing treatment for use on both men and women. A session of the treatment only takes 45 minutes - (you could have it done in your lunch hour), it is pain free and no recovery time is needed unlike invasive lipo suction. The result is up to a 40% permanent fat loss in the area treated and inch loss. Fat freezing targets those stubborn areas or pockets of fat that most of us have, that are

Before and after treatment

resistant to diet and exercise. Results can sometimes be seen as soon as two weeks after the treatment but it takes up to 12 weeks for maximum results as the body takes several weeks to naturally dispose of the fat cells via the lymphatic system. Most people only need one session, although each area can be treated a maximum of three times. We spoke to Lauren about introducing Cryolipolysis (fat freezing). “I first heard about fat freezing a year ago. I always

Fat Freezing Pain Free Permanent Effortless Fat Loss

want to offer my clients the most up to date and effective treatments on the market so I decided to look further info it,” she explains. “Lipo Angel stood out with their impressive results and effective systems and I wanted to offer treatments that really work. Results so far have been fantastic, it gives me great job satisfaction to help so many people target areas of fat they can’t shift.”

When frozen, the cells break down and are passed out of the body via the lymphatic system. Other cells such as skin tissue, blood vessels and the nervous system are not as sensitive to freezing and therefore unaffected by the Lipo Angel ICE Treatment.

What is Cryolipolysis?

Amazing results

The term ‘Popsicle panniculitis’ was coined by Harvard scientists who studied the effect of Popsicles on children. The term refers to a dermatologic condition where exposure to low temperatures can selectively damage subcutaneous fat while leaving surrounding cells intact. The fat cells undergo a cell death, also known as ‘Apoptosis.’ The sensation of the treatment is a strange one with a feeling of warmth then excessive cold on the area being treated and a constant sucking feeling throughout. But surprisingly no pain.

Many of Lauren’s clients who have undergone the treatment have been amazed by the results, such as Maria from Shenfield. “I had given up on getting rid of my stomach fat. I’d tried everything, diets, exercise, body wraps, but nothing worked. I decided to give Lipo Angel a try after Lauren told me about it. I’ve lost a total of 7 inches from my stomach and hips. I’m thrilled.” Barbara from Romford lost half a stone and 6 inches from her waist, she commented: “Even though the treatment is not for weight loss, I’ve lost half a stone and 6 inches from

my waist. The hardest part is deciding what area to do next.”

Reader Offer

The Lipo Angel ICE treatment is available exclusively at Total Beauty by Lauren. Lauren is offering Made in Essex readers a huge discount. £50 off one area of the treatment, normally £300, for Made in Essex readers £250. Or £100 off two areas, normally £500 for Made in Essex readers £400. The offer ends on April 15, 2015 and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Ford’s GT supercar FORD used the recent Geneva Motor Show to give the Ford GT supercar its European launch. The pinnacle of the Ford Performance line-up, the all-new Ford GT uses an aerodynamic carbon fibre body and fuelefficient twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine. This produces more than 600 horsepower to deliver one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car, and innovations that will benefit future Ford models across the board. Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, handling, braking, safety and efficiency are optimised through the use of advanced lightweight composites including a carbon fibre passenger cell and body panels, and aluminium front and rear subframes. The chassis features an active racing-style torsion bar and pushrod suspension, with adjustable ride height, and carbon-ceramic brake discs.

SsangYong’s compact SUV SSANGYONG unveiled Tivoli - the company’s all-new B-segment SUV at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. With its dynamic urban design, Tivoli is an all-new B-segment SUV on an all new platform, new body and two new engines. The growing trend to downsize to smaller vehicles especially in Europe where value for money is increasingly sought, is the result of continuing economic pressure and enforced regulation around the world. Drawing on the company’s considerable expertise in designing and manufacturing diesel engines, the new 1.6 litre e-XDi160 diesel unit offers strong performance, and is also environmentally clean and quiet. There is also a newly developed 1.6 litre e-XGI160 petrol engine designed for fuel efficiency, and both engines can be combined with the choice of manual or automatic transmission, and either a 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive system. Passenger safety has been a top priority for

this car, and Tivoli offers best in class standards by including seven airbags. For those customers needing practicality, Tivoli provides one of the largest cabins and boot volumes in its class, while also offering a generous number of storage spaces. Particularly for the younger driver, there’s the opportunity for individualisation with the ability to change the background colour of the instrument cluster to any of six colours. There are eight attractive exterior colours which can be teamed with either a beige or black interior. The petrol powered Tivoli will go on sale in Europe from May, and the diesel and 4-wheel drive derivatives from July.

Design award for Cactus THE bold design and styling of the new Citroën C4 Cactus has been recognised by Car Design News, which has named it their ‘Production Car of the Year.’ Judged by a panel of design experts and industry professionals, the award was presented at the Car Design Night in Geneva recently. Car Design News is a leading resource for automotive design industry professionals. Since 1999 it has provided invaluable information, advice and insights to students and design directors alike, thanks to its network of writers and industry analysts. Editor of Car Design News, Owen Ready, said; “Every so often, a product appears that manages to side-step the usual product replacement-driven development cycles and rigid marketing requirements. Citroën’s C4 Cactus is a prime example of this rarefied breed, a fact illustrated by its dominance in this year’s judging process.”

Teutonic coupe is a class act

LL car makers have a pinnacle model in its range, the one that offers the highest level of modern luxury in automotive terms. It is stunning to look at, has a powerhouse of an engine and chassis to match making it a joy to drive with a sumptuously-appointed cabin with state-of-the-art technology. With Mercedes-Benz it is the opulent S-Class, and for a more sporty model there is a GT-styled two-door coupe model which takes the level of elegance mixed with sportiness to a new dimension. Sitting in the middle of the range is S63 AMG, with the S500 and S65 AMG below and above and both AMG versions benefit from distinctive styling cues front and rear, different radiator grille and twin sports exhausts which have a selectable exhaust note setting with flaps in the rear silencers. The S63 AMG on test is powered by a bi-turbo 5.5-litre V8 which produces a hefty 585hp and a massive torque

CHRIS MANNING figure of 900Nm and propels the beast to a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, not bad for a car that weighs in at over 2,000kgs and has 65kg paired of its weight by the use of composite brakes and aluminium-skinned body. With a maximum speed of 155mph (or 186mph if you take a Mercedes driving academy course) it has a hefty CO2 figure of 237g/km and combined fuel consumption of 28 mpg. In combination with the standard LED lighting system, unique headlamps with 47 Swarovski crystals inset within them are available. 17 form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, while 30 round-shaped crystals make up the turn indicator lamps. The suspension in the coupe is lower and stiffer than that in the saloon, and the ride, while a fraction firmer, still feels pretty comfortable. The thing you notice most of all is

that the body is extremely well controlled indeed. The air suspension on the AMG model is fitted with Mercedes-Benz’s Magic Body Control, which tilts the coupe into a bend. The first ‘’suspension with eyes’’ it uses a camera mounted in the windscreen to scan the road up to 15 metres ahead and automatically and at fractions of a second tilts the body up to 2.5 degrees. The curve titling function leans the coupe into a bend in a manner similar to a motorcyclist of skier, through hydraulic cylinders mounted in the suspension struts and counteracts lateral forces experienced when cornering. The interior does not disappoint either. A mixture of old and new, with extremely comfortable leather seats which are heated of course but also have a massage function and side bolster inflation when cornering. The steering wheel can be heated as can the central console and side door panels to keep your elbows warm.

TEST DRIVE Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe With a mixture of polished wood cappings and splashes of tasteful chrome metalwork – it all works extremely well to provide a great cabin ambience. High-tech use of twin wide-screen digital thin film transistor (TFT) displays – with one sitting behind the steering wheel containing speedometer and rev counter, while the other mounted centrally and slightly higher displays navigation and infotainment systems.

Ambient lighting for night time driving in seven different colours is the icing on the cake for the interior. The standard 13-speaker 590 watt stereo system can be upgraded to 3D surround system with 24 speakers and 1,520 watt capacity. Driving the S-Class Coupe is a real treat. Fire up the lusty V8 and nice burble emits even a tickover. The seven-speed automatic gearbox gets on

with the job effortlessly and the Magic Body Control with its tilt function does seem a bit odd at first but you soon learn to enjoy its benefits. As you might have guessed all this luxury does not come cheap. The S63 AMG Coupe costs £125,595 before you start adding extras, which on the car on test pushed it up to over £149,000. Cheaper option is the S500 at £96,190 with a smaller 4.7-litre V8 engine.

Trial of revised driving test ROAD safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist says the driving test must continue to play a major part in ensuring the UK’s roads are among the safest in the world. The call comes as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency announces a trial of a revised driving test at 20 centres across the UK from April. GEM chief executive David Williams, said: “Although the driving test has recently come under scrutiny for perhaps not being tough enough, particularly when more than a fifth of deaths on British roads involve drivers aged 17-24, the fact remains that the UK driving test is still regarded by most international road safety professionals as probably the most difficult,

comprehensive and successful of its kind in the world. “Whether the latest revisions are enough, or too much, it’s important that the system continues to look for sensible evolutions that represent modern driving.” In the new trial test, candidates will have to follow a guided route using pre-set satnav directions. The three-point turn and reversing around a corner would disappear, and be replaced with more commonplace manoeuvres such as reversing out of a parking bay. They will also be required to answer safety questions while on the move, instead of at the start of the test. As a contrast, GEM has been

Mis-fuelling insurance

ANDEVA Underwriting Agency has just launched Fuel Protect, a £20-a-year insurance product which addresses the risk of mis-fuelling incidents. Incidents covered by Fuel Protect are dealt with by the UK’s largest independent roadside specialist recovery services, Auto Fuel Fix. Fuel Protect is a response to a problem that affects around 150,000 people every year on British roads. According to the AA, every four minutes someone in the UK will put the wrong fuel in their car. Specialists attend the scene, drain the contaminated fuel and ensure that the vehicle can be restarted. If the vehicle cannot be restarted, it is recovered to a repair garage at no charge within a 30-mile radius.

Stanley double aids promotion push

S

HERWIN Stanley scored twice as Brentwood Town kept up their push for promotion with a 2-1 victory over Maldon & Tiptree at Park Drive.

The striker scored from the spot midway through the first half before adding a second shortly after half-time. Substitute Alex Andrews pulled one back straight from the restart but the home side

were unable to find the net again. Despite picking up the win Brentwood remain fourth in Ryman Division One North as the sides around them all won. Stanley recovered from a

No wins in sight yet as Clarets only manage a draw against Basingstoke IN A GAME where the Clarets wanted to make a turn-around in form after three loses on the bounce it was not to be as a late Manny Williams penalty after a first-half strike from Michael Cheek set the clarets to four games without a win. Very early on Basingstoke looked to be the more dominant side compared to City as the visitors high pressure caused a series of problems for the home side. City had the first real chance of the game to go ahead as the skillful Rohdell Gordon skipped past two before laying-off to Michael Cheek whose shot got deflected just wide of the near post. City had a serious of chances to break the deadlock: Firstly, Mason Spence’s shot flew high over the bar after Gordon’s pulled-back cross; then Toner’s drilled cross was held by opposing keeper Stuart Moore. Chelmsford finally broke the deadlock through Cheek. He burst through, away from the trailing Basingstoke defenders. Moore reacted well, rushing from his line, but mis-timed his challenge resulting in Michael Cheek skipping past and tapping the ball into an empty net in the 35th minute. Basingstoke came out of the half time break with a more attacking style. They pressed higher up the pitch forcing City into more back passes to Lovelock. Clarets’ chief Mark Hawkes was obviously discontented with his side’s 1-0 lead as Basingstoke looked ever dangerous so he made

an attacking substitution with Rohdell Gordon being replaced with Joe Ward who instantly was involved with action. His distant free-kick on the left wing looped high and over the Basingstoke wall before dipping ever so slightly forcing the visiting Moore into an acrobatic save. The tiring Basingstoke squad resulted in Jason Bristow making a double substitution. Quickly after the substitutions City were forced into another rotation as Michael Cheek was forced off due to an injury meaning Kabongo Tshimanga would be introduced to the game. However, the Clarets looked as though if they could get a second goal the win would be theirs, it was not to be though as Redwood’s deep corner reached Hughes but his shot lacked any power. Then, with only minutes remaining on the clock, the recently brought on Manny Williams was fouled by Mark Haines inside the box granting the visitors a lifeline in the 89th minute. The fouled Williams took the spot-kick and sent Lovelock the right way but his penalty was too far into the right-hand corner for Lovelock to reach. City had plenty of chances to regain their lead including Hughes’ two chances which both flew wide of the goal. MATT LEE

knee injury to make his first start since January as jointboss Adam Flanagan made five changes to his team following their 3-3 draw with Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday. Despite making wholesale changes Maldon were the better of the two teams in the opening exchanges. The Blues steadily grew into the game and with 20 minutes on the clock they were awarded a penalty and Stanley stepped up and fired the ball into the top right corner, sending the Maldon keeper the wrong way. Confidence rose amongst the Brentwood team and Ngandu had the ball in the net soon after, but he had his close range effort ruled out for offside.

managed to get past three defenders to make it 1-0. Nathan F and Jake B came off to allow Sophie and Daniel on and the first half ended with the Jets very much on the front foot. The second half began without the on-form Shaun and pressure from the Jets came in the form of Sophie and Nathan F. Nathan W joined the defensive line and Jake D continued to provide accurate crosses to get the ball forward.

However, against the run of play the Falcons broke away and brought the score level 1 – 1. With six minutes to go the Jets decided to up their game, with Ethan coming closest. Sophie’s pace continues to impress but both she and Jake B fell foul on more than one occasion to the offside rule. Daniel, Nathan F and Jack continued to battle to the very end with support being provided by Nathan W, Marcello and Jake B but it was not to be and the Falcons ran out winners.

Ryman Division One North

Maldon boss Alan Kimble made a change in attack immediately after the break, bringing on Andrews in place of Theo Jones, but Brentwood made a better start to the half and doubled their lead in the 53rd minute. Alex Akrofi latched onto Louis Baucutt’s throw-in and beat one defender to burst into the box before teeing up Stanley who smashed the ball into net from eight yards. However, Brentwood’s twogoal advantage didn’t last long as Andrews scored straight from the restart. Jonathon Nzengo fizzed a

low cross along the face of goal and the substitute was in the right place to turn it in. Centre-half Greenfield thought he had brought Maldon level on the hour when he fired in from Matt Gulfer’s free-kick, but he was judged to have fouled Bowles in the process and the goal was chalked off. Maldon’s challenge started to fade from there on and Brentwood went in search of a third goal to make sure of the win. Despite excellent chances from both substitute Robbie Rees and Alex Akrofi they couldn’t find the net, however Stanley’s brace proved enough to earn maximum points for the Blues. MARTIN VOLLER

Big Cats title charge on track with victory over Warriors

T

HE big games keep on coming for Leopards as they prepare to host title rivals Derby Trailblazers at the Brentwood Centre this Sunday. Robert Youngblood’s side remain a win clear at the top of the NBL Division One table following their 81-66 home win against Westminster Warriors last Sunday and a win against Derby would see them move closer to a second league title in four years. Even without the unavailable Ajumobi, Leopards’ proved too strong for Westminster on Sunday as they shrugged off a one-point half-time deficit to blow the Warriors away with a devastating second half display. The relegation-threatened visitors were outscored 21-13 in the third period and 2214 in the fourth as the Big Cats picked up their 14th league win of the campaign. Will Ashby led the way with four treys in his 18 point haul, and added six assists. Lawrence Brown had his biggest game of

the season with a 13 point, 16 rebound double-double, while Byron Richards finished with 15 points and five boards. With Ajumobi away on business, Tosin Oyelese made his first start as a Leopard and he opened the scoring in a first period which saw the visitors lead 10-8 after eight minutes. A Brown dunk finally sparked the home side into life and a pair of Matic Zupanc treys helped the Big Cats close out the period on a 10-3 run to lead 19-13 at the first break. That lead grew to nine as Ladi Brown hit a triple to open the second period but former Leopard Nathan Ashley hit five points in a 10-3 run to bring the visitors within two points.

Albert Margai broke the run with a three but Warriors grabbed their first lead of the game with a Justin Hitchman trey three minutes before half-time and although Ashby drained another from downtown it was the visitors who led 39-38 going into the locker room. Zupanc opened the second half scoring but there was little sign of what was to come as Warriors 43-40 with four minutes gone. Ashby finally got the Big Cats moving as he nailed a three, and with Richards hitting three of three at the foul line following Hitchman’s foul, Leopards never trailed again as Ashby again struck from downtown to send his side into the final break leading 59-52. Richards continued the three-point barrage to open the fourth period and Leopards’ lead only dipped into single figures before Oyelese wrapped up the scoring to send the Brentwood crowd home happy. School’s successful African trip Bad-tempered game ends in defeat

SHENFIELD High School’s Cricket Academy embarked on a trip to Cape Town, and learnt a lot in the nine matches they played at some of the best cricketing schools in South Africa. They were victorious in three games in total, beating competition holders and hosts Bergvliet 1st Xl as well as Milnerton High School who ran out deserved winners of this year’s competition. They also beat Westerford High School and ran Wynberg High School close in the final fixture.

The tour was not about ‘winning’ every game, it primarily was designed as a learning environment that would enable the Academy players to become better cricketers. The Shenfield High School Cricket Academy is now in its second year and its reputation for excellence continues to grow. The link with Essex CCC is ever growing with off-season training including a six week programme led by coach Conner Browne.

Their season starts with a pre-season tour of Eastbourne and fixtures include Eastbourne College, Bancrofts, Felsted, New Hall, St Josephs and Ipswich School. This year will hopefully see Jack Potticary follow in Matthew Salisbury’s footsteps as he hopes to join Leeds MCCU. BRENTWOOD began the strongest of the sides against Ford, and early pressure paid off as Brentwood were awarded a penalty corner, which captain Simon Teale stuck home to give them the lead. The advantage didn’t last long, as soon Ford had equalised and then shortly took the lead. Ford added another to give them a two goal cushion as half-time sounded. Brentwood began their comeback through a drag-flick from Steven Naven, with Alex Handerson also coming close and hitting the post from a yard out. Brentwood kept the ball and applied pressure and eventually won another short corner which was put away by Naven to bring the scores level. Ford went ahead against the run of play,

although Brentwood kept up the pressure and a ball hit into the circle and deflected by Jak Taylor to Steven Naven on the back post who converted to bring scores level. With 10 minutes to go, drama hit as Ian Forbes was sin-binned for appealing a decision, followed shortly by goalkeeper Ian Malone for a similar offence. A supporter then appealed the fact that Brentwood were not given time to replace the goalkeeper and was sent out, meaning Brentwood had to sacrifice a player for that too. Brentwood now had eight players on the pitch and a powerful shot into the roof of the net couldn’t be saved, as the game finished on unpleasant tone 5-4 to Ford.

BRENTWOOD humbled near neighbours Romford by 62- 0 at King Georges on Saturday. A large crowd witnessed a near perfect display of power and pace as Steve Killington’s men overwhelmed Romford. Brentwood were forced to play up hill in the first half and quickly raced into a 14 -0 lead after 10 minutes. Quick ball intelligently used by half backs Harris and Simpson saw the three quarters create space to score. The Brentwood pressure was relentless and by half time they were winning 29-0.
