Raising awareness to highlight the hardlife of people on the streets

Roughing it to help the homeless Issue 020 THURSDAY 5 MARCH 2015

B

RAVING the cold as part of a fundraising initiative were staff, volunteers and members of the public at the Romford YMCA, taking part in the annual Sleep Easy project to highlight the issue of people sleeping rough. Since the event began in 2010, almost £1million has been raised by hundreds of people forsaking a warm comfortable bed for the night for a cardboard box and sleeping bag. Money raised will go directly to the local YMCA

projects and will help to support the issue of youth homelessness in the borough and help the local community build a better future for the town. During the event held last Friday, a competition was arranged to find the best cardboard box competition, and to keep spirits up singing around an oil-drum campfire plus fun and games for entertainment. Visiting the YMCA site in Rush Green Road, was Deputy Mayor Councillor Barbara Matthews, who

Dr.Winifred van Rensburg

judged the best cardboard box competition. A way of avoiding sleep rough for the night was to buy an excuse, a £25 donation which went towards the Sleep Easy fund. Support for the event came from sleeping bags from Above Us Only Sky, cardboard boxes from Flexible Packaging and food from 3663, Brake Bros and Urban Eat. The Praise Chapel, in Frederick Road, Rainham sponsored the event.

ROGUE TRADERS

Be Sure at the Door campaign

A

CAMPAIGN which aims to prevent elderly people becoming victims of rogue traders has been launched by Essex County Council, Essex Police and Age UK Essex. Be Sure at the Door aims to help potential victims – often elderly people – to avoid falling prey to rogue traders. Community Agents and Age UK Essex staff will be visiting elderly people giving them advice about how to react to cold callers and how to spot a genuine trader. Fridge magnets have been produced with three vital steps to follow if a cold caller touts for trade, as well as contact details for the Trading Standards’ Buy With Confidence scheme. They are being distributed by Age UK Essex, Essex Police and some district councils plus GP surgeries and Essex libraries.

FINANCE

Managing accounts of the bereaved THE death of a loved one is always a sad and emotional time for those coming to terms with the loss, and with the increasing amount of financial affairs carried out online an increasing number of bereaved people have experienced difficulties managing accounts of those who have passed away. A report by Co-operative Funeralcare has revealed that 93% of adults now hold online accounts and more than 76% have not yet considered, or made arrangements, for the management of their digital presence when they pass away. Worryingly, the findings also point to the personal impact that this is having on the bereaved. More than half of those who have had to manage a loved one’s online accounts following their death have experienced difficulties and a third found that they were unable to manage the process at all. Once accounts had been traced, families faced further difficult decisions when determining what their loved one would have wanted to happen to them. The findings also highlight that the average adult in eastern England has accumulated substantial personal capital such as music, films or books and with over 500million online accounts throughout the UK, this could result in a staggering £17billion left in cyberspace. Sam Kershaw, director of operations for the Co-operative Funeralcare, said: “It can be really hard and incredibly emotional to sort out the belongings and financial affairs of a loved one after they have passed away. “Accessing and managing these assets can add further complications to this, especially if you aren’t aware which accounts exist or the process to follow. To help plan for managing digital legacies and offer advice, the Co-operative Funeralcare has developed an information guide online at www.co-operativefuneralcare. co.uk/help-with-accounts-online.

Cllr Roger Walters, Essex County Council Trading Standards lead, said: “Never do business with cold callers offering household maintenance and repairs. “Only use traders who have registered with the Buy With Confidence scheme. Check online at buywithconfidence.gov.uk or ring 08454 040506.” Andrew Gardner, Chief Executive of Age UK Essex, said: “It’s incredibly important to give older people the confidence to say no to cold callers who knock on their door and this project aims to do just that. “We’re very pleased to be able to support the Be Sure At The Door campaign and raise awareness of the tactics rogue traders use.’’ Last year, five members of a rogue trader gang were between them jailed for over 27 years after an Essex Trading Standards police investigation.

Help for families with disabled children A NATIONAL charity that supports UK families with disabled children is worried that local families could be missing out on a potential £21.55 to £138.05 extra each week because they wrongly think they’re not entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Charity, Contact a Family, say DLA is the main benefit for disabled children and can transform a family’s income by helping to meet the extra costs of raising a disabled child. It also helps families feel less alone by giving disabled children the chance to have fun at local activities. It can cost three times more to raise a disabled child than a non disabled child and latest research has found that more than a quarter of families with disabled children have additional expenses of over £300 every month. Despite this, many parents don’t claim DLA because they believe their child’s disability isn’t severe enough, their child needs a diagnosis first before they can make a claim, or they aren’t eligible because their child has a learning disability, autistic spectrum disorder or behaviour problems. Contact a Family is here to help. Make sure your family isn’t missing out on this extra income. Visit www.cafamily.org.uk or call our free helpline on 0808 808 3555 for more advice.

How a passion for building heritage became a reality for builder Craig Milburn after bursery granted City & Country helped 260x163 HT-CM SALEaAD (MIE)_260x163mm HT-CM by SALE AD (MIE) 12/12/2014 09:12 Page 1 his career

LOCAL building course has proven life changing for one attendee. Craig Milburn, who completed the Traditional Building Skills programme thanks to a bursary granted by City & Country, was so inspired that he subsequently launched his own restoration business; Shire Conservation. The course, which is provided by Essex County Council, teaches vital skills such as timber framing, flint walling, thatching and wrought ironwork to ensure that these skills are not forgotten. City & Country who have an outstanding reputation for the expert restoration and conversion of listed buildings into unique dwellings of exceptional quality and character, has supported the Council run programme since 2008, and with skills and knowledge gaps affecting the heritage sector the company continues to provide the bursary. Craig, who was a student when he initially enrolled, comments: “I was already passionate about heritage and listed buildings and was immediately drawn to the course. At the time I was travelling from Kent to Essex, in the early stages of setting up my business, as well as studying, so funds were low. The bursary provided by City & Country was invaluable - without it I would not have been able to join the course.” As well as teaching practical skills, the course aims to inspire and encourage an appreciation and understanding of heritage development; a niche sector of the construction industry. Craig continues: “One of the main benefits of the course was the practical training. We worked on real life projects in a historic environment which gave me a crucial insight into working in the industry. The course

also helped me to understand the thinking and passion that conservation professionals put into their projects. It was incredibly inspirational and it confirmed my lifelong ambition to start my own business - I would say that I found the course life changing.” Helen Moore, Managing Director at City & Country, comments “There is a clear shortage of trained heritage builders in the market armed with the necessary skills and passion to deal with Listed buildings. At City & Country we believe in breathing new life into often redundant and long forgotten buildings and therefore it is imperative for us to support men and women entering into this profession.” She continued: “We’re absolutely delighted that in this instance the City & Country bursary allowed Craig to develop his own business within the field. We are pleased to continue our relationship with Essex County Council, and we will continue to support the course for the foreseeable future.” Katie Seabright, Historic Buildings Education Consultant at Essex Country Council, comments: “With about 14,000 listed buildings in Essex we face a considerable challenge in maintaining our built heritage, which is heightened by a shortage of skilled craftsmen. The support City & Country gives to the traditional building skills training programme helps to address this issue locally. The bursary has allowed those who would otherwise not consider attending a course because of financial implications to enhance their knowledge and understanding of traditional building techniques and materials. This in turn has allowed them to learn how to work with listed buildings, and therefore better maintain Essex’s built heritage.” For more information: 01279 817 882 or visit: www. cityandcountry.co.uk.

European cash to help Essex businesses

Preferred secondary schools matched

MILLIONS of pounds of European cash is available for Essex businesses and Essex County Council can help access it. The first ever Essex Means Business Project Europe conference took place on Thursday February 26 when it was revealed that there is funding available. George Kieffer, Chair of the South East Shadow ESIF (European Structural Investment Fund) Committee said that £180 million is available to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) from 2014-2020. The biggest funds being European Regional Development and European Social Fund. Mr Kieffer said: “Bring us your ideas and projects and we can advise you whether they meet the criteria.” The Funding and Investment Team at ECC have a track record of success helping applicants for European funding, securing more than £61 million for businesses, charities, local government and community organisations in Essex.

OUNCILLOR Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, has praised the hard work of staff and the council’s continued investment in creating school places. His comments come as parents of children due to start secondary school in September discovered the outcome of their secondary school applications this week. Almost 15,000 parents will have received notification with the 95% of parents who applied online having received their confirmation by email or by accessing the county council’s website. Some 86% of parents have been offered their first preference of school, with 7% getting their second preference. That means 93% have been offered either their first or second preference. Cllr Ray Gooding said: “It’s fantastic that we have once again been able to provide so many children with a place at a school preferred by their parents, despite significant growth of the county and an ever-increasing demand for school places.” The county council recently received confirmation from the Department of Education of a new £41.4 million grant, bringing the total funding to support the creation of new school places over a four year period up to 2017/2018 to £137.7 million.

You’re hired... for radio!

Y

OU may recognise the name Daniel Lassman. He was one of the 2014 contestants vying for a job with Sir Alan Sugar in The Apprentice. He may not have been the ‘chosen one’ for that particular show, finishing third, but local boy Daniel who grew up in Chigwell, has now been offered his own weekend show on Romford’s local radio station Time 107.5 FM. He will broadcast live every Saturday from midday until 2pm, chatting to a host of celebrities and sports personalities, helping to gear everybody up for an afternoon of sporting action. His first show is this Saturday March 7. We caught up with the Time Team’s newest member before he goes live on air? How did you get involved with Time radio? I have always listened to Time FM. I wanted to join a radio station so it was a perfect match! What’s the appeal? I prefer listening to Time as it focuses on local news, its interactive and the travel reports are useful. It’s also great that they cover most

of Essex and parts of East London. It gives a chance for local businesses to advertise to a targeted audience too. Who are your favourite radio presenters - past or present? I can’t choose favourites haha I’m here to make friends, Mark Dover has been a big help though. What will your show offer listeners? My show will offer top entertainment, interviewing some big names in the world of sport, music and business. Having the sporting connection, with the show leading up to the big Saturday games - are you a big football fan? I am a big football fan, Leyton Orient are my team. I have some really inspirational people that have agreed to get involved in the show. I won’t ruin the surprise but it doesn’t get bigger. Has your appearance on The Apprentice changed you as a person? Would you do it again? No I wouldn’t do it again and to be honest I

don’t think it has changed me in any way. I loved the fact I have done it, it was a fantastic experience. I gained huge opportunities that I can’t wait to discuss with Time FM listeners. Stay tuned! Daniel will be on Time FM, Saturday March 7, from 12pm. If you are not in the area you can still tune in online via the website at www.time1075.net or via the free Time 107.5 FM App.

PLANS to reduce daytime parking charges and introduce a cheaper weekly parking ticket have been given the go-ahead. The new charges were agreed by the Brentwood Borough Council’s Business and Town Centres Committee on February 23, 2015. They come after a £2 charge for parking between 7pm and 6am Monday to Sunday was introduced for a trial period on October 20, 2014 to car parks in Chatham Way, William Hunter Way, Friars Avenue and Hunters Avenue. The trial period brought in an estimated additional £60,000 which will be added to the 2015/16 budget to reduce other fees, such as the full-day parking ticket which will be reduced for £10.50 to £8. The changes are expected to be introduced in early June. Brentwood Borough Council’s Chair of the Business and Town Centres Committee, Cllr David Kendall said: “Our aim was to try and achieve some fairness and balance between day and night when it came to parking in the Council car parks in the Borough. I believe we have made a good start on the road to achieving our objective. I do believe the changes will be broadly welcomed by the shoppers, visitors and businesses in Brentwood.”

SINCE 2009, the European Funded Low Carbon Business programme has already given in excess of £1.9 million in grants to nearly 600 Small and Medium sized businesses in the Thames Gateway South Essex Area and MidEssex areas. Now two more local businesses in the Brentwood area have benefitted from ‘Green Grants’ totalling more than £8,000 from the hugely successful Low Carbon Business programme. NEWS ARTIST OF THE MONTH

In tune with... and supporting local artists Taking the music industry by storm: Jordan Gray

O

UR Artist of The Month for March is a gigging singer/ songwriter originally from Orsett. Phoenix FM presenter Michelle Ward caught up with the exceptionally talented Jordan Gray Jordan plays the keys like a devil, sings like an angel and is one of the most original music artists you will see in Essex. At just 26 years old, she can boast seven albums, four official music videos, three Indie Novels, 50+ Official Music Awards including Best Music Video (Thurrock International Film Festival) and Best Original Artist (Essex Entertainment Awards. If you get a chance to hear Jordan live (and I thoroughly recommend you do), you will be blown away by her originality. Whether she is performing Pop, Rock, Jazz or

Electronica, her original material and stage presence will be sure to wow you. I say that because the first time I saw Jordan live, that’s exactly what she did! Describe your music in five words? Wistful, whimsical, eclectic Power-pop You are known for having so much energy on stage? I think it’s important to play every gig like it’s your last few minutes on Earth Who is your musical inspiration? It’s a dead split between Michael Jackson and Jeff Buckley. What is your best lyric? From my own material? “Eyes closed, I’m just a spider on your bed post”. From another artist: Radiohead “Let down and hanging around, crushed like a bug in the ground” Tell us a secret? I’m blind in my left eye,

you’d never know except in photographs. What artist would you love to work with? Regina Spektor - she’s a wonderful songwriter and a bona fide genius. Sum up the music dream? I think it’s important to crystalize exactly what you want. Practically speaking, for me: to achieve financial independence owing to a string of creative endeavours. But all I really want is to create new things all the time. You’ve lived in Essex all your life, what’s so great about the county? Essex surprises me every day. I was terrified coming out Transgender in front of my home county but everyone has been so good to me, I have never been prouder of this place.

Sisters doing it for everyone!

ISTER Act attracted a full house to the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch last week when the Shenfield Operatic Society took on the daunting task of rendering the celebrated 1992 movie as a stage musical. The story of Deloris Van Cartier, a singer who takes up the false identity of “Sister Mary Clarence” after witnessing her gangster boyfriend execute his chauffeur, featured Whoopi Goldberg in the original starring role. At the Queen’s, the lead role was vibrantly filled by Kerry Cooke, whose faultless and energetic performance more than lived up to that of the Hollywood star. Sister Act, a dazzling stage show

In fact, the whole show was captivating from beginning to end, and the actors were supported by deftly managed stage sets and lighting. The dazzling spectacle brought a touch of West End glitz to Hornchurch, and marked a resounding triumph for the Essex stage.

Ideas…Mother’s Day

The perfect blend What is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon Tea was introduced in Britain in the early 1840s. It evolved as a mini meal to stem the hunger and anticipation of an evening meal at 8pm. Initially it was developed as a private social event for ladies who climbed the echelons of society. It was only when Queen Victoria engaged in the Afternoon Tea ritual that it became a formal occasion on a larger scale, known as ‘tea receptions’. These receptions could have as many as two hundred guests with an open ‘at home’ invitation to visit between 4pm and 7pm, during which they could come and go as they pleased; this was the genesis of the Afternoon Tea as we know it. FASCINATING FACT: Interestingly, scones were not a common feature of early Afternoon Tea and were only introduced in the twentieth century.

IF you have a penchant for afternoon tea, this Mother’s day why not take your mum to enjoy this quintessentially British treat.

It’s all about the

‘Grit Lit’

for Essex author Kimberley Chambers

There are no airs and graces about EastEnd born and Dagenham raised Kimberley Chambers with her gravelly voice and forthright opinions. But she makes no apology and of course why should she.

T

HE 47-year-old author only started writing less than 10 years ago and boasts 10 novels to her name, selling over 400,000, with her last PAYBACK reaching the top of the Sunday Times best seller chart last year. “What you see it what you get with me,”

says Kimberley. “I’m the perfect match for my books and I think my readers like that. I pretty much do what I say on the tin.” Following firmly in the footsteps of the queen of gangster lit, Martina Cole, Kimberley’s novels are set in the underworld of London’s EastEnd. But

Number one bestselling Romford based author Kimberley Chambers will be out and about in Essex to celebrate the release of her new book The Wronged. Her very own branded black cab, will be heading on an epic tour of Essex and East London on Thursday 12th March – will you catch her?

If you don’t catch the cab, you’ll also be able to see her on:

The Butler’s are back, and more dangerous than ever…

The Wronged by Kimberley Chambers is out in HB and ebook on 12th March. Order your copy now!

while her tales are undeniably violent with thuggery and crime lacing nearly every page, they are also realistic tales of families and the unbreakable bonds of blood ties. “Yes, there’s violence in my books,” admits Kimberley. “But I also write about mad old aunts and foul-mouthed nans. They’re real.” Despite leaving school with just two exam passes in English and typing, Kimberley’s always succeeded. “I don’t’ think exams mean that much,” she says. “You need to go out and learn about life. It’s more important to have some get up and go, then you’ll make your own way.” And that she certainly did. Kimberley’s chequered CV includes DJ, taxi driver and market trader, however her years before she started writing wasn’t wasted. In fact Kimberley attributes her time spent working on Roman Road market as the building blocks of her fiction. “I worked as a taxi driver for a while but it was my time on the markets I really loved,” says Kimberley. “I worked them all – Roman Road, Petticoat Lane…I sold ladies fashion. It was a great laugh back in the day and there were so many characters but we worked hard. I had the gift of the gab. I could have sold snow to the Eskimos back then. “It was the place to be, but then Tower Hamlets [council] stopped the parking and it killed the market practically over night.” Now Kimberley’s days as a writer couldn’t be further from her market stall existence. Before she’d get up at the crack of dawn and be on her stall whatever the weather, now it’s a lot more leisurely existence. “I usually get up and go to the gym and see friends,” says Kimberley. “I have a siesta before I start writing at about 5pm

and then I write late into the night. It can get quite lonely working from home.” As a single lady, Kimberley’s friends are incredibly important to her, as is Jack the Jack Russell – Shitzu cross she shares with her friend. “I love taking Jack for walks in Hainault forest. I go with a friend who has two dogs. It’s beautiful but I’d never go on my own. It’s one of Kimberley’s big regrets that she never had children, but a combination of her self-confessed immaturity and not meeting the right guy meant a family wasn’t on the cards. “I think I was quite immature in my twenties and was too busy DJing and meeting the wrong kind of blokes,” admits Kimberley. “Although it doesn’t bother me that much. What you haven’t got, you don’t miss!” Today Kimberley is happy living in Essex with her friends close by. Although she has got her Romford home on the market, she’s still deciding where to move. “I had considered moving to Brentwood but I don’t like the TOWIE effect. I can’t watch it and I don’t want to be nipping down the high street to find coach loads of tourists coming to stand outside the Sugar Hut!” But wherever Kimberley moves to, she’s adamant she’ll stay in Essex, especially as she plans to move her fictional family, The Butlers, out to the county in her next novel. With that in the pipeline could she ever leave?

“I decided to ask the world’s booklovers to help me with advice and suggestions”

Things Kimberley loves about Essex. • Lakeside for a bit of shopping • Hainault Forest when she’s taking the dog for a walk • Rettendon for a pub lunch *The Wronged by Kimberley Chambers is out 12th March

World Book Day

15

T

ODAY is World Book Day and with it comes a rush of author events across the country. It is an exciting time for readers and writers alike, as the spotlight is well and truly on the wonders of the written word.

But what is it about books that make them so valued? Well, for me, it’s the fact that you can be transported from the everyday into a whole new realm within seconds. Although I agree that film and television can do the same, books are different. They are personal to every reader. For instance, when I first read Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, I created an image in my mind of the setting and characters. My Mr Darcy was very different from Colin Firth I can tell you! And that’s the beauty of reading. I own that image, with the help of Ms Austen’s witty narrative. It’s not just fiction that should be celebrated on World Book Day. I find it frustrating that the WBD £1 books tend to focus on fiction alone. There are many readers who much prefer dipping in and out of an information text, whether it be a Haynes Manual about a well loved engine, or an accurate recount of a major event in history. Books open up our often insular existence. We can learn, we can question, we can argue with a good book, or a bad book for that matter! I often get asked what’s ‘good’ for children to read and the answer is simple; anything that they enjoy (as long as its content is appropriate of course). When I was first teaching, many moons ago, I filled my reading corner with a huge selection of material, including the backs of cereal boxes, magazines, comics, word searches. The list went on and on and the children loved it.

A read a day

Natasha Radford from Chicken & Frog bookshop celebrates World Book Day and encourages reading for pleasure all year round. It’s incredibly difficult to choose the ‘best’ books, as everyone has their own opinions on what warrants a great story. I know I shouldn’t say it, but The Hunger Games just aren’t my cup of tea. Having said that, my daughter absolutely loves them and often chooses to re-read them all, even though she knows them inside and out.

However, I have been asked for a list, so here are a few of our recommended books, in no particular order. We haven’t included the amazing plethora of board books because it was just too difficult to choose:

To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee: This novel approaches the highly sensitive topic of racism in 1930s America with humour, warmth and compassion and is (sadly) still hugely relevant today.

Welcome to Your Awesome Robot, Viviane Schwarz: A superb mix of instructions and narrative. This quirky book brings out the inventor in any reader!

1984, George Orwell: A negative Utopia, a chilling version of what was a future society. Orwell was cannily close to the mark.

Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book, Julia Donaldson: Charlie snuggles in his comfy and begins to read...his story travels through many familiar tales. Edwin Spencer (trilogy), J.D.Irwin: Edwin is a bit of loser; he doesn’t have many friends, or skills, or confidence...poor Edwin. Then he discovers that there’s a whole alternative universe that he can visit. Pretty cool heh? Macbeth, Illustrated Graphic Novel (various other classic titles available): These stunningly illustrated graphic novels add a whole new dimension to the classics. You can choose from original or modern versions of the text, making the stories accessible to wider range of readers.

• The World Book Day £1 (€1.50) book token is also redeemable against any book or audio book worth £2.99 (€3.99) or more in all bookshops participating in the initiative. • The World Book Day book tokens are valid until 29th March 2015 • The WBD token can be exchanged for a WBD title

The true tale of the Monster Billy Dean, David Almond: The story of Billy Dean - born on the “day of doom” that heralded World War III - draws its power from the phonetic language used to represent Billy’s voice as he works to understand himself and his world. Through the Woods, Emily Carroll: This is a chilling collection of comics, five stories in all, that combine illustrated historical settings with terrifying visions of unearthly and psychological terrors. Don’t forget to use your £1 WBD voucher (issued to all school pupils) - there’s a superb range of books to choose from! Participating bookshops such as Chicken & Frog will be displaying World Book Day posters and notices in their windows and in store.

Are you onthemarket.com?

Billericay

On 26 January 2015, a major new UK property portal called OnTheMarket.com went live. It has been created to compete head-on with Rightmove and Zoopla.

Billericay - £265,000

A modern and neutrally decorated two bedroom terraced house, benefitting from a garage and drive to the rear of the 60’ garden situated 0.9 mile to station. VIEWINGS: SAT 7 MARCH.

Blackmore

At The Home Partnership, we pride ourselves on being progressive in our approach and we are delighted to have joined thousands of other prominent national, regional and local independent estate and letting agents in supporting the most important new venture of its type in many years. We have reviewed our overall digital strategy and firmly believe that OnTheMarket.com will rapidly become a major player in the market and a “must view” destination for serious property-seekers. At the beginning of February, OnTheMarket.com launched with a multi-million pound marketing budget which includes sustained and heavy-weight national TV advertising on the main terrestrial and digital channels. In addition, it is running a high-profile press campaign in titles such as the Daily Telegraph, Times, Sunday Times, Daily Mail, as well as in magazines such as Country Life, The London Magazine and Fabric.

Blackmore - £650,000 Situated in the heart of this picturesque village is this four/five bedroom link detached family home. The property is beautifully presented and could suit couples or families alike, offering flexible living accommodation including a fully fitted study in bedroom four.

The central OnTheMarket.com campaigns complement the local promotional activity by thousands of estate and letting agents across the country who are heavily and enthusiastically supporting the new portal. More and more agents are moving all their properties to OnTheMarket.com from other websites. No longer can Rightmove or Zoopla claim their property listings cover the entire market because many estate and letting agents have left them to join OnTheMarket.com as the best

platform to display their properties in the clearest and simplest way. As it is a mutual organisation, OnTheMarket.com has no external shareholders. It is able to plough profits back into improving the propertysearching experience and into efficiently connecting motivated buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords. So, since Monday 26 January 2015, we have been proudly displaying all our instructed properties at OnTheMarket. com. The state-of-the-art website provides the most uncluttered, user-friendly and modern UK property search service. There are no distracting ads for other products, no spam mail, no information over-load – just a pure focus on properties, with hundreds of thousands of homes to buy or rent at all price points all over the UK. Whilst continuing to monitor the growth of this very new brand, we shall continue to market all of our properties on Rightmove and on our own website, www. thehomepartnership.co.uk, as well as working as closely as ever with our valuable database of registered buyers and tenants. We would love to hear your feedback on the new portal (good or bad!) and please feel free to contact us, or just pop in to the office for a natter!

Attention all Spinach & Feta Filo Pie “as a Mediterranean twist on the traditional pie” Ingredients

Spinach & feta filo pie

It’s British Pie Week (March 2-8). To celebrate, pastry experts Jus-Rol have come up with some tasty recipe ideas, so get baking and prepare to tuck in!

Beef, Wild Mushroom & Red Wine Pie “a hearty pie that the whole family love” Ingredients 500g Jus-Rol™ All Butter Puff Pastry thawed 85g British bacon diced 500g British free range braising/stewing beef cubed 2 tbsp oil 350g shallots peeled 1 tbsp flour 500ml red wine Salt & black pepper 350g mushrooms sliced and quartered [we used portobello and chesnut] Beaten egg to glaze 10g wild dry mushrooms

Method: 1. Sautée the bacon and beef in heated oil until just brown and remove from the pan. Add onions to the pan, cook for 5 minutes or until just beginning to turn golden, stirring occasionally. 2. Return beef and bacon to pan and stir in flour, cook for two minutes, then gradually stir in red wine. Bring to boil and then simmer for 20 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. 3. Stir in mushrooms then allow to cool. 4. Preheat oven to 220ºC (200ºC for fan assisted ovens)/Gas M7

5. Place cooled pie filling in pie dish (we used a 26cm pie dish). Place Blackbird (or other pie funnel!!) in centre of filling. 6. Roll out pastry large enough to cover pie dish plus a little bigger. Cut strips from edge of pastry and use to cover rim of pie dish – which you have brushed with beaten egg, (this keeps pie lid in place), glaze with beaten egg. 7. Cover pie filling with pastry to form a lid. Press down edges firmly and trim excess pastry. 8. Glaze with beaten egg. Bake for 25 minutes or until puffed and golden.

6 Jus-Rol™ filo pastry sheets Melted butter for brushing 200g fresh spinach 1 red onion diced 25g butter 400g feta cheese Method: Follow pastry preparation instructions. Preheat oven to 190°C (170°C for fan as-sisted ovens) Gas M5. 1. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan then add the drained spinach and allow to cook for about a minute, turning frequently. Set aside to cool. 2. Gently sauté the onion in the butter and allow it to cool. Place prepared spinach, onion and tomato in a bowl, season and mix well. Then crumble in the feta and mix together.

Beef, wild mushroom and red wine pie

3. Lightly brush a sheet of filo pastry and place in base of tin or dish so that the excess drapes over the sides. Repeat with two further filo sheets offsetting them

5-6 pieces sun dried tomatoes or sunblush tomato – cut into smaller pieces black pepper and grated nutmeg - to season poppy seeds for sprinkling

so the base and sides of the tin are completely covered. 4. Put filling into the pie, spreading it evenly in the dish, then fold in the excess pastry so that it starts to cover the filling, brush again lightly with butter. 5. For the pie lid brush a sheet of filo with butter and tear it into wide strips, place it on the pie allowing it to fold or drape in ‘waves’. Continue with the remaining pastry, tucking some down around the sides of the pie until the filling is covered. Brush again very lightly. 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until pastry is crisp and golden brown. Serve hot.

Chicken Leek & Lemon puff pie

Mushroom No Dish Pie

“By using chicken thighs you can get the best flavour” Ingredients 1 Jus-Rol™ Light Puff Pastry Sheet 8-10 chicken thighs 1 tbsp vegetable oil Few sprigs of thyme (optional) Juice and rind of 1 lemon 2 medium leeks trimmed, halved lengthways, chopped and washed 25g butter 1 tbsp flour 250 ml chicken stock 2-3 tbsp half fat crème fraiche Salt & black pepper 1 beaten egg Method: Preheat oven to 180° C (160°C for fan assisted ovens) Gas Mark 5. 1. Place the chicken thighs in a roasting tin, drizzle with a little oil and scatter with a few sprigs of thyme. Roast for 20-25 minutes, remove from oven and allow to cool. Once cooled remove skin

and bone from meat and break meat into medium sized pieces. 2. Meanwhile melt the butter in a largish frying pan and gently sauté the leeks until just ‘al dente’.

3. Add the juice and grated rind of the lemon, stir in the flour and then gradually stir in the stock to give a good sauce. Bring to the boil to thicken and then simmer for a further 3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the chicken and crème fraiche, season to taste and allow to cool. Increase the oven temp. to 220°C (200°C) Gas Mark 7. 4. Once cooled put leek and chicken filling into an oblong pie or other ovenproof dish and brush the top rim with beaten egg and top with the light puff pastry sheet. 5. Press well down all round the top edge, trim any excess about 2cm down sides and press pastry firmly against side of dish. Make a slit or hole in the top and brush with beaten egg. Bake for approximately 20 minutes until pastry golden and risen.

Apple & Orange Mini Pies “The perfect size for dessert, tea time or simply when snacking” Ingredients 2 x 320g Jus-Rol™ Sweet Shortcrust sheets 2 good sized cooking apples peeled, cored and cut into smallish dice 2-3 tbsp marmalade Little caster sugar for sprinkling [(the golden caster is good for this)] Zest of 1 orange for decoration – optional water for brushing

Method: Follow pastry preparation instructions. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C for fan as-sisted ovens) Gas Mark 6 1. Place the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut out 10 discs to line the muffin

tins moulds and ten smaller discs for lids . 2. Combine the prepared apple and marmalade and divide between the pastry cases, lightly brush the undersides of the smaller discs and press firmly onto each mini pie. 3. Make a small hole in the top of each to allow the steam to escape, then brush each with water and sprinkle lightly with the golden caster sugar. Bake for 18 – 20 minutes until pas-try cooked and golden. Scatter with grated orange zest as immediately they are removed from the oven if desired. Serve warm with custard.

Jus-Rol™ is a home grown success story. Founded in 1956 by Tom Forsyth at his bakery in Coldstream in the Scottish Borders, Jus-Rol™ have been producing its leading range of pastry products for over 60 years. From puff pastry to short crust, filo pastry to bake at home croissants and Pain au Chocolate. Available in all major supermarkets and many convenience stores. The Jus-Rol™ website jusrol.co.uk is packed full of great recipes and techniques for making pastry easy to use and to ensure pastry will remain a favourite for years to come. British Pie week 2015 is another great excuse for everyone to share the nation’s passion for pastry.

Pie ‘n’ mash has traditionally been the favourite food of the East End going back generations. Lisa of Stokemoores, Elm Park and STOKEMOORES Karen of Eat Fresh, Collier Row, have been friends for many TRADITIONAL years and although the shops are individually run they share

the same original recipe that has seen both shops go from strength to strength. The pies are made fresh daily from only British produce, with the original and best recipe for the liquor still being used. The Elm Park shop was opened by Hammers legends Tony Gale who you can see here enjoying his Pie & Mash and ex winger Mark Ward. Look out for us in the West Ham programme, which we appear in most weeks. If you are having a special event such as a wedding, a party or

even a wake nothing goes down better than pie ‘n’ mash. Give us a ring for our special discounts on party orders. Since opening, both shops have been a great success, so why not pay us a visit or give us a ring and enjoy some traditional East End pie ‘n’ mash.

OUTH drama group Offspringers is the offshoot of Springers Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society based in Chelmsford. Their forthcoming production Vackees is taking centre stage at the Cramphorn Theatre from March 17-21. The show’s director, Sharon Scott chats to Made in Essex. parents and Springers’ members we wanted to encourage young people to learn acting, music and theatre skills and help build their confidence. We cater for around 60 children aged between 7 and 18 years, many of whom progress to the adult group – and beyond. We’ve even seen some members go on to be on-stage – and backstage - in the West End! What productions have the Offspringers done previously? Offspringers have performed a number of cabarets as well as the musicals “Annie,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Smike” and “Bugsy Malone” even “Shakespeare 4 Kids – A Midsummer Night’s Dream” which was a great challenge. What was the idea behind this latest production? With this year’s centenary of the

In rehearsal for The Vackees

Great War, we wanted to produce a show, which looked at another aspect of war – albeit from WWII; one that most affected children in particular. The evacuation of children away from their homes, their families and friends, into an alien and often-frightening environment, presented an opportunity produce a wonderful story set to music and also a learning opportunity for the cast and crew; and to learn of a world without iPads, Xboxes or Smart Phones! Tell us about Vackees? Set at the outbreak of the Second

World War, this is the funny, moving story of the invasion of a Somerset village by child evacuees from London – the Vackees – and their adventures with the (at first) hostile native children. The musical centres around a young London lad, Kip, and follows his first experiences of love and war. There’s a memorable score by TV and film composer Carl Davis, with many big production numbers. It’s an evocative musical Tickets are available from the Civic Theatre Box Office on 01245 606505. Ticket prices from £12.

Offspringers rehearse at Springfield Parish Centre, Springfield, from 6pm – 8.10pm every Wednesday. There is currently a waiting list to join. For more details please get in touch via the website contact page at www.springers-aods.com and your child will be added to the waiting list.

Wise people learn to tolerate only productive anxiety in themselves. They make tension work for them instead of against them. Their aggressiveness is outgoing and initiating, not hostile or arrogant.

Jensen set for return ALMOST 80 years since the Jensen name appeared on cars, the famous marque returns with the opportunity to order the first officially-sanctioned model in 13 years. Marking the rebirth of the brand, the formation of the Jensen Group is the start of the next chapter in the Jensen story, following the collapse of the car manufacturer in 2002. Spearheaded by industry stalwart Tim Hearley, the return allows enthusiasts to purchase the Jensen GT. Hearley, the man responsible for the return of Jensen, and the force behind defending the Jensen trademark for almost four years, said: “This represents the next chapter of Jensen and, as we look to the future, we want Jensen enthusiasts to help us celebrate as we unveil a completely new car.” The Jensen Group is currently engaged on a project to launch Interceptor 2 in 2016.

Mazda6 gets quality boost to its interior

T

RUTHFULLY I thought the Mazda6 already looked pretty smart and eye-catching already, but Mazda felt they had to zap it up. Here, then, is the 2015 model range of twenty eight versions. Prices start at £19,795 rising to £28,795 on-the-road. My top-of-the-range test car was the 2.2D 175PS Sport Nav Auto Tourer; with options, its full price was £31,055. £31,055 for a Mazda? You must be joking! But wait... on our 100-mile test drive it lost out in absolutely no way to any premium make you care to mention. There’s been no change to the

By

TOM SCANLAN drive train but the suspension’s been revised. Mazda’s ‘SKYACTIV’ engineering and construction design is already proven to be very good indeed (including a startstop system that is smoother and quieter than any other). Therefore, it was no surprise to find the Tourer showed it was completely at home over all sorts of roads, from quiet motorway cruising to really sporting performance on twisty country roads. Accurate steering and excellent

acceleration, with a smooth auto gearchange all did the trick. The ride and handling were also first-class. Paddle and manual selection of the gearbox was also on board for extra fun or control. Indicated fuel consumption on quite a hard driving route showed 43.3 mpg. But Mazda says they have really taken on what their customers and sections of the press have been saying – and that’s to do with upping the quality of the interior. That could be the actual materials used, the look, or the technical side and how intuitively it works. Improved sound

insulation also helps. In a few words, it generally has worked. Although I found that the satellite navigation was not obvious in its controls, bothering to read the instructions helped! You now also get three years of free European map updating. The instrument panel and central console have been very nicely redesigned. Amongst the new technology is the enhanced Safety Pack

Sound motorway safety advice ROAD SAFETY organisation GEM Motoring Assist says the four motorway deaths recently offer a grim reminder of how dangerous our high-speed roads can be. GEM chief executive David Williams MBE comments: “Motorways are statistically our safest roads, but when something goes wrong, the high speeds involved usually mean the consequences will be more severe. “We encourage all motorists to put safety first, be mindful of possible adverse weather conditions and take all necessary precautions to reduce risks on motorways.” GEM has compiled useful

hard shoulder safety information for motorway journeys: n You may use the hard shoulder only in a breakdown, in an emergency or when directed to by a police officer n If your car develops a problem, leave the motorway at the next exit or pull into a service area. n If you can’t make it to the next exit or a service area, then pull onto the hard shoulder and switch on your hazard lights. If possible, stop close to an emergency telephone. n Don’t sit in your vehicle, even if it’s cold and wet. You are at risk of being struck from behind. Leave

FOLLOWING a loss of braking experienced by Autocar magazine when carrying out an emergency braking test from high speed on a Suzuki Celerio on a private road test facility at the end of January, Suzuki carried out an immediate investigation into the cause and subsequently issued a Safety Recall at the beginning of February. The recall relates to a possible fault in the brake pedal release mechanism.

This ensures they don’t run free and cause a hazard to other vehicles. n Never use the hard shoulder to take a break. This is extremely dangerous as well as illegal. A rectification by Suzuki Motor Corporation has been implemented and the shipment of modified brake components for customer vehicles have recently been issued to the dealer network. The rectification takes 30 minutes to complete and vehicles are already in the process of being returned to customers. NINE MAN CITY LOSE TO BROMLEY

E

ARLIER in the season Chelmsford beat Bromley at the Fortress Stadium and the visitors took thier revenge last Saturday after their previous loss. A brace from Moses Ademola either side of a first Chelmsford goal for Michael Toner was enough for the London-based side to walk away from the Melbourne stadium with the three points at the expense of nine-man City. Chelmsford City started slowly with Bromley taking the first chance of the game through Reece Prestedge but his shot flew high over the crossbar. The Clarets had a series of chances to take a surprise lead: Michael Cheek’s ball through was too far ahead of Jack Bridge for him to control properly and later on Bridge’s cross into the 18-yard box was too deep and went out for a goal kick. In only the 13th minute Bromley had the best chance of the half when Louis Dennis’ corner caused a series of problems resulting in Mark

Hughes acrobatically clearing off the line. Chelmsford’s defence seemed to be extremely nervy. Toner’s long ball got controlled perfectly by winger Joe Ward but the chance was quickly taken when Bromley’s Joe Anderson tackled him. Ward was subject of yet another chance when the ball was punted up-field by Harry Hickford to be controlled expertly before cutting inside and dragging his shot wide. Quickly after, a corner from Ward, resulted in Mark Hughes taking a shot but his acrobatic effort flew just wide of the upright. Michael Cheek had the next attempt on goal when Jack Bridges inch perfect cross found the head of Michael Cheek but spun just wide. Chelmsford had yet another attempt to break the deadlock courtesy of Ward’s distant free kick but his effort skimmed over onto the roof of the net. Eight minutes after the restart Bromley broke the deadlock. A series of passing movement

began with Moses Ademola who broke forward, set Udo Udoji down the wing who crossed in for Ademola to head in calmly and put the visitors 1-0 up. Ademola looked to get his second of the game when he shot from distance but Clarets’ keeper Tom Lovelock remained unchallenged. Hughes picked up a yellow for dissent but was very quickly given his marching orders for what looked to be a reasonable challenge but the referee disagreed and showed the Clarets’ skipper his second yellow. To make up for the sending off City manager Mark Hawkes gave Mason Spence his debut when he took off fellow debutant Kabongo Tshimanga. Chelmsford had plenty more chances to level

including one from Jack Bridge who broke through Bromley’s defensive ranks only for his shot to lack power and be comfortably saved by Alan Julian. Soon after Chelmsford evened the scoreline courtesy of Michael Toner. The defender tapped in from the far post after a scrappy moment in the box to make it 1-1 and score his first goal in a Claret shirt. Bromley almost won it but City goalkeeper Tom Lovelock was fouled by Reece Prestedge and the goal disallowed. However, it was not to last as Bromley won it in the 89th minute through Ademola at the back post. Following this a fiery last few minutes followed. A late challenge from Harry Hickford saw him shown a straight red which resulted in a conflict between the two sides and coaching staff resulted in Mark Hawkes being sent to the stand. MATT LEE

Brentwood Town move into play-off Confident Brentwood almost rewarded places with win over Brightlingsea HOCKEY

BRENTWOOD hosted league leaders Spalding in what was going to a tough physical contest against a team which could score many goals. Brentwood did not need to be reminded of Spalding’s prowess up front as they quickly went ahead from a penalty corner before soon adding another. It began to look ominous for Brentwood who struggled to put passes together or gain much meaningful possession in the opposition half. However Spalding did not score again as Brentwood began to feel their feet in the game, winning a short corner and converting through Steven Naven to reduce the deficit. Brentwood were beginning

to play the better hockey as the half drew to an end. Continuing from where they left off, Brentwood moved the ball confidently and were rewarded for their efforts as Jak Taylor went on a weaving run to put James Duggan through on goal. Spalding had been placed on the back foot and it seemed as though they couldn’t keep out the surging Brentwood attack, and were caught on the counter to concede a clear penalty-flick following a foot in front of an open goal. The flick was taken and

converted by Ian Forbes to take Brentwood ahead for the first time in the match. Brentwood lost concentration after this and almost immediately conceded to bring scores level again. Frantic hockey from Brentwood followed, showing little of the team which had just fought back from two goals down. Clinical finishing from Spalding put them ahead again, and they later scored another, as Brentwood left themselves exposed at the back looking for the equalising goal. A late Consolation goal came for James Duggan although there was little else Brentwood could do as the final whistle sounded and the game ended 5-4. SIMON PARSONS

BOXING

Joyce boxes clever

DAVID Joyce took victory in the London Championship boxing final when he competed last Sunday at Harold Hill Community Centre. Throughout the bout he proved far too strong for his opponent and took a convincing win. Last year David got to the final in the novice championship. The 16-year-old from Elm Park, trains at Hornchurch Boxing Club under the watchful eye of trainer Dean Smith. Dean said: “The club are very proud of his achievement. He is definitely one to look out for.’’

BRENTWOOD Town made a welcome return to the play-off places with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brightlingsea Regent at North Road. First half goals from captain Martyn Stokes and Sam Bantick earned the win which sees the Blues move two places up to fourth in Ryman Division One North. The match was Brentwood’s first since their 1-0 defeat to Dereham Town on February 10th, while Brightlingsea have climbed the table in recent weeks and sat just two places below Brentwood prior to kick off. There was little between the teams during the opening stages. Regent striker Phil Kelly was first to try his luck but he saw his eighth minute effort headed over the bar by Stokes. At the other end Alex Akrofi had a shot well saved by Andrew Plummer after James Love had a shot blocked in the box. The chances continued to fall for both sides in an entertaining first half. Jake Holman headed wide for the hosts before Brentwood opened the scoring after 25 minutes. Bantick caught the R’s defence off guard with a short corner to Robbie Rees who quickly returned the ball for Bantick to deliver a perfectly weighted cross into the front post and Stokes ran in to steer a header into the net from 10 yards. Goalkeeper Ollie Bowles ensured Brentwood remained in front with a fine save to deny Oliver Canfer’s low-angled drive straight from the restart. Kelly was next to give the Blues defence a fright when he latched on to Ricky Griggs’ freekick, but he dragged his effort wide of the target and soon Brentwood doubled their lead. Akrofi ran on to a long ball forward and charged towards goal before squaring to Bantick who found the top corner from 18 yards in the 35th minute.

The hosts were handed a lifeline on the stroke of half-time when Stokes conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Griggs fired the setpiece into the wall. Brentwood seemed content with defending their two-goal lead in the second half and reduced to home side to shots from range. The occasional chance fell to the Blues. Plummer made a fine save to thwart Akrofi before the striker combined with Richardson who fired just over from an acute angle. Brightlingsea manager James Webster rung the changes which gave the hosts a new lease of life going forward, but Bowles was never in considerable danger. The keeper did well to save Matt Cripps’ back post effort and in stoppage time substitute TJ Amass curled a free-kick narrowly wide of the far post, however the hosts were unable to break though Brentwood’s organised defence. Brentwood’s joint-boss Adam Flanagan was pleased to seal maximum points from what he described as a “tricky fixture”. He said: “We did well, we got ourselves in front in the first half. In the second half we didn’t really need to go for it, we were just a little bit more solid really and I felt we didn’t give them lots of opportunities. “Overall I think it was a really good result and a really good performance.” The Blues are due to face Maldon & Tiptree away next Saturday. Brentwood: Bowles, Mbulu, Freeman, O’Rawe, Stokes (C), Rees (Osei 87’), Love, Robson, Akrofi, Richardson (Stanley 76’), Bantick (Ngandu 72’). MARTIN VOLLER

Ladi Brown on the attack for Leopards

Brown turns defence into attack to wrap up victory

L

EOPARDS certainly did it the hard way against Storm on Saturday as they fought back from a 15-point second period deficit to pick up their 12th league victory of the campaign. Ajumobi and Will Ashby led the way for Robert Youngblood’s team with 27 points apiece, Ajumobi adding 12 rebounds for another double-double and Ashby hitting five of his nine three point attempts and dishing out six assists. Courtney Van Beest added 12 points and four rebounds as Leopards survived a poor shooting night from captain Albert Margai who failed to trouble the scorers with his 12 shots. Ajumobi and Ashby got going early in the game as the home side hit the first five points but Storm answered with a 14-2 run and went into the first break with a 23-11 lead. Michael Darlow drained a trey to put Hemel 30-15 up at the mid-stage of the second quarter but an Ashby triple off Margai’s assist finally got Leopards moving, and Ajumobi capped a 7-0 run before hitting a buzzer beater to cut the deficit to 34-27 going into the locker room at half-time. The Big Cats finally tightened up their defence in the third quarter and a

pair of Ashby free-throws capped a 17-3 run which had the large crowd in its feet and put the home side ahead for the first time since the early stages at 46-44, and from then on it was nip and tuck. The sides were still level heading into the final six minute but scores from Ashby and Ajumobi put Leopards ahead for the final time before Storm’s Bode Adeluola hit a three to set up a grandstand finish. An Ajumobi and-one made it a four point game before Adeluola halved the lead at the foul line before a great defensive play saw Ladi Brown hurl himself across the court to steal the ball and fittingly it was Brown who wrapped up the win with a breakaway dunk in the final seconds. n Leopards return to the Brentwood Centre on Sunday after seven weeks away sitting one win clear at the top of the Division One table. A 75-63 win at Bradford on Sunday, sees the Big Cats now control their own destiny with seven games remaining. The Big Cats edged a tight first period

18-16 before taking control in the second period to lead 44-31 at half-time. They held that 13 point lead at the final break, 48-35 and at the mid-point in the fourth period they were 69-56 ahead. Ajumobi continued his fine season with 24 points, with Margai adding 14, Ashby 13 and Byron Richards 11. n The next four games are at the Brentwood Centre on successive Sundays starting with the visit of Westminster Warriors this week, tip-off 4pm. The London side have had a tough season and are second-bottom of the table, but Leopards will remember that it took a Dave Ajumobi basket in the dying seconds to give them a 61-60 victory when the teams met in November. In contrast, the National Trophy meeting between the teams at Harlow six weeks earlier saw Leopards comfortably win 82-56. Before the game there’s the last chance of the season for young Leopards’ fans to train with the Big Cats, with further details available on www.leopardsbasketball.co.uk or by calling 07828 470015.
