College float wins award S

Issue 019

THURSDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2015

TUDENTS from Havering College of Further and Higher Education attended a ceremony hosted by the Mayor after their float came third in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Mayor of Havering, Cllr Linda Trew hosted a reception at Romford Town Hall for all those who played a part in this year’s highly successful parade. The entry, a vintage steam train, had been crafted in wood by students and staff at the college’s construction centre in New Road, Rainham, for a competition between the London Boroughs on the theme ‘London on the Move.’ Parade executive director Bob Bone travelled to the ceremony to present Cllr Linda Trew with a trophy and a cheque for £5,000 which will benefit her three official charities, the local branches of add+up, Alzheimer’s Society and MIND. Among those to receive certificates and medals from the Mayor were 44 Havering College students on carpentry and painting and decorating courses plus their lecturers. Cllr Linda Trew said: “This has meant much. We have received a lot of good feedback. I am so grateful to everyone

Student Ben Leask, 17, from Harold Hill, who is studying for a City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, said: “Taking part in making the train, being on board the float on the day of the parade and being presented with an official medal has been fantastic.”

OUR front page story last week featured four intrepid teenagers who were going to walk from London to Paris for charity. Unfortunately, after we went to press, they were forced to change the date of the walk, which will now start on Saturday, May 23. Donations to support the group can be made at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/wyo.
