CAMPAIGN to raise awareness of litter across the county has received a major award at the national Keep Britain Tidy Awards 2015. The ‘Love Essex’ campaign saw all 15 Essex local authorities, including Brentwood Borough Council, join forces with the Highways Agency, RP2 Media and 75 McDonalds, KFC and Dominos franchises across the county, to work in partnership with and help tackle the issues of fast food litter. This led to the campaign being awarded the ‘Diamond Jubilee Partnership Award’ at the awards last week. In Brentwood the Waste and Recycling team held a number of Litter and Recycling Shows, assisted by Neighbourhood Action Team, who also undertook tidy ups and litter picks alongside the roadshows. The team are continuing to deliver the message from the campaign by working alongside local schools to deliver Litter Awareness talks. The Council’s Environmental Health team also worked with Essex Police in an operation during the campaign in June to prevent flytipping as part of the campaign and carried out stop checks on vehicles and informing drivers that they needed to carry a waste transfer notice and a licence to transport and dispose of any commercial waste they carry. Lloyd, said: “Keeping our borough clean is one of our priorities and that’s why we wanted to support the campaign. ‘‘By working with other authorities across Essex it helped get the message out that those who drop litter need to change their behaviour, so I am pleased that the campaign was recognised at the Keep Britain Tidy Awards.’’ Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “The awards recognise the work over the past 60 years of Keep Britain Tidy. STUDY of companies set up in the UK in 2014 has shown that Essex enjoyed a record year for entrepreneurialism – with 15,815 new businesses registered last year. This means that there are now 100,793 companies currently operating out of the area, making it the 5th best performing area in the UK. There are 5.3% more businesses operating out of Essex than there were in 2013 and 32% more than there were five years ago. The highest performing area in the district was Southend with 2,129 companies, followed by Basildon with 1,839 and Thurrock with 1,679. The figures were compiled by Inform Direct. CEO Henry
Catchpole, said: “It is great to see an entrepreneurial spirit flourishing right across the country. There is lots of support out there for fledgling businesses and it seems people are putting their ideas and dreams into action.” While Britain has long been famed as an enterprising nation, the recent explosion in start-up activity has been exceptional. Mr Catchpole suggests that there are three complementary factors fueling this growth. First, there is the ease and speed with which a company can be started – usually within hours and generally for less than £20. Secondly, many companies can successfully operate from home and need little more than a website before they can start trading.

In its sixth successive year of arts and cultural trails across the county, a report estimated that it not only generated an impressive boost to the local economy, but also created the equivalent of 18 full-time jobs. LANS for a country park on the outskirts of Shenfield on land between Mountnessing roundabout and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, could be the result of a development of land at Officers Meadow. It is all part of Brentwood Borough Council’s Local Development Plan (LDP), which is subject to public consultation until February 17. Sites must be found for 5,500 new homes to be built by 2030 and the council is asking for residents views on the matter. The country park plan is the idea of Leader of Brentwood Council, Councillor Barry Aspinell, who said: “It has long been an emotive subject that Officers Meadow has been identified for housing, but the loss of that land would mean Shenfield would lose that space as greenery. “If I can get adjoining landowners to contribute as well by purchasing through monies from this development, we could have a park for public open space, which could include structured recreational play, facilities for football, cricket and organised games but also hundreds of acres of public open space that can be enjoyed by our residents.� According to Cllr Aspinell, any such plan would see Shenfield High School’s playing field, which is opposite the school, become part of

A PETITION against homes on land used by Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Sawyers Hall Lane has received an incredible response with more than 100,000 signatures of support including from singer and Hopefield patron Leona Lewis. The land has been put forward as a potential new plot for new homes in the borough. Hopefield has rented the land from Tesco since 1992 for a ‘peppercorn rent’, but
now the supermarket chain need to make ÂŁ250m cuts and are ‘‘reviewing their options.â€? The sanctuary is worried it could be forced to close. Cllr Barry Aspinell has spoken of his desire for the council to purchase the land and see Hopefield expanded and enhanced possibly turning it into a tourist attraction. This would help secure its future and protect it as a Community Asset.

UTISM is a developmental condition affecting the way in which a person communicates with, and relates to, other people and the world around them. It is known as a ‘spectrum’ condition which means that each person with autism is differently affected by it. Asperger syndrome, a form of autism, is considered a ‘hidden disability.’ You would not know from someone’s appearance that they had the condition. Obtaining a diagnosis can be difficult and even if they navigate the increasingly difficult pathway to diagnosis there are little or no post diagnostic services and people are left isolated and confused. Rolo speaks from experience, having been diagnosed with Asperger’s three and a half years ago. “To date I have had absolutely no support. The problem is we are often sent to the wrong places.” Rolo who is based in Colchester has set up Autism Rolo to assist those with Asperger and/or ‘high functioning’ autism. He seeks to address many of the issues that autistics have to face and to provide a hub where people can get together to discuss the things that matter to them, discuss their problems and to find ways of solving those problems. One main theme is to educate those who are non-autistic. “A lot of the information that is imparted is from the perspective of the non-autist,” Rolo explains. “I am going to do something different and provide workshops, training and attend conferences where the information will come directly from me and my experiences of what
communities together to create a far stronger and more productive society. In order to fulfil this mission, Rolo’s plan is to get on the road. He needs a converted van which would serve as a mini-office to attend conferences and provide workshops and training in both the public and private sectors such as giving talks to other Autism charities. Many autistics, Rolo included, struggle hugely with sensory overload in public spaces such as hotels and cannot stay in them. Rolo also suffers with spinal degeneration, OCD and acute anxiety disorder and travelling long-distance to conferences places huge stresses on him, mentally and physically. The van would not only allow him to get to these venues and deliver workshops around the country but offer him respite and a place of calm and safety once his work is done. This week he launched a fundraising initiative to raise money for the ‘van/minioffice’ and get the project well and truly off the ground. Fountain lights the way FOUNTAIN in A one of the best parks in Romford is now illuminated after dark and adds to the nighttime vista of the lake and park. Raphael Park fountain is to be lit up for the first time thanks to a £5,681 grant from Veolia North Thames Trust. The Friends of Raphael and Lodge Farm Park successfully bid for the funding with the aim of adding to the aesthetics of the park as well as bringing in some light as there is no other lighting in the park after dark. Bright white energy efficient LED lights have been installed on the base of the fountain, which when on, light up the fountain, the lake and the park. Councillor Wallace joined the friends group to officially switch-on the light
to the fountain on Thursday, February 12. Julia Herold, chairwoman of The Friends of Raphael and Lodge Farm Park group, said: “I’m delighted that this project has resulted in a fantastic addition to the night-time vista of Raphael Park. “Our group did the
easy bit, making the funding application, but we would like to thank both Veolia North Thames Trust, which funded the work, and Havering Council staff who helped to install the new lights. ‘We hope it will provide pleasure to local residents and visitors to the park.”
Councillor Melvin Wallace, cabinet member for culture and community engagement, said: “The park is already very beautiful, and the new lights make it even more so. The friends group did really well to secure the funding, and I hope the local community enjoy it.”

Opera star takes centre stage
n STAR SUPPORT Comedian Russell Brand has backed the campaign to save Thurrock libraries after the announcement that some branches were under threat of closure. Brand who grew up in Grays commented that ‘library services must be maintained at all costs’. He also spoke of the key role that libraries played when he grew up and that he would never have made it through drama school without them, he added “books are sacred - and we need sacred spaces.”

Jackie is no stranger to performing and has been singing most of her life. She trained with with Ivor Evans, of Sadler’s Wells Opera Company and then went on to sing in his Opera Company. Robert Fletcher gives us the lowdown on Angling and focuses on the forthcoming photographic exhibition at Essex Libraries Ingatestone ANGLING has always been more than just angling, but it has changed dramatically in the last 30 years Ingatestone & Fryerning Angling Club was formed in 1951. Last year it deposited some of its records at Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, the first coarse angling club in Essex to do so. The club and the members have access to areas in and around Ingatestone & Fryerning with some special ecological, geographical and historical interests but many members of the club, some of whose members now come from outside the area, may not realise this. Today, the environmental aspects of angling are as important as is a desire to connect with young people in a ‘sport’ that has many other nonsporting appeals.
Angling has had, from the Bible onwards, an artistic and literary pedigree and from the Twentieth Century it has been associated with such names as Ransome, Sherringham, Zane Grey, Hemmingway, Borley Mill Walker and Yates, not to forget Ingatestone’s own one time resident James Wentworth Day, who lived just beyond casting distance of the Red House Lake next to Ingatestone Station. Ingatestone & Fryerning anglers have had the attractions of Borley Mill since the 1970s and our very own reference book in Stephen Downes and Martin Knowelden’s The New Compleat Angler published in 1983. They also get to fish in other picturesque locations such as a lake next to Ingatestone Hall, another associated with a old

Young writers impress in bookshop competition
T
HIS year heralded the third year of Chicken and Frog’s annual writing competition. Each year the number of entries has increased, resulting in over 700 poems and stories to read before a final decision could be made for 2014/15. How fantastic that children can become writers, regardless of the challenges which may face them in terms of literacy. BRENTWOOD Borough Council has been recognised for the second year running as the best in Essex when it comes to taking food safety seriously. According to an investigation carried out by the national consumer organisation Which?, residents and visitors are better informed when eating out in Brentwood, thanks to the borough being in the top ten authorities for food hygiene enforcement. They looked at 398 local authorities in the UK and, using the latest data submitted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), ranked how they are performing on food safety enforcement. Councillor Vicky Davies Brentwood Borough Council’s Vice Chair of the Housing & Health Committee, said: “We must give credit to our food businesses as this is their success too and they should be congratulated for the effort they make to help build confidence in eating out.”

ORKING in Public Service in the NHS, writing a collection of short stories as well as his debut novel, it’s a wonder how Christopher Stagg has any spare time. But for the last six months, the freelance writer and illustrator has also managed to squeeze in a job presenting a weekly show on Phoenix FM. Chris got the presenting role on Brentwood’s local radio station purely by chance. “I’ve wanted to do a project in radio for quite a while but never done anything like this before,” he explains. “I don’t actually live in Brentwood, so I looked at local stations around east London and Essex and was very impressed by how professionally Phoenix presented themselves. I got in touch and to my delight, Chairman Paul Golder liked what I wanted to do. And here I am, opinionated on the things that I am passionate about and can talk for Britain, so I thought I would be a good match.” Chris’s weekly show Words & Sound is generally about books. Readings of novels, short stories, spoken word or discussions on authors, even film adaptations all feature. “There’s interviews too,” he says. “I’m hoping to start some competitions based on listeners

to get across to listeners? “More than anything I hope I can introduce things that people won’t have read before. I try to look at books that are a little different, like Haruki Murakami. I have also just reviewed the Note Book by Agota Kristof on my Phoenix FM blog page and read a couple of pre-1900 novels too as I’m a little bit obsessed with the Victorian era.” As well as his love of reading ‘I read at least one book a week,’ Chris loves to write and is a great lover of comedy and darker elements of fiction. His debut novel is underway as well as a collection of short stories which are both due to be published in 2016. “My writing always has a dark edge. Even if its funny there’s always something sinister about it. It would be fitting if the books came out Halloween 2016 because of the nature of my work....plus it would be my 35th birthday!”
‘LET it Go’ the theme tune from the hit film Frozen will once again be sung in harmony by fans of the Disney film when it comes to Brentwood next month. The Brentwood Centre is hosting an interactive screening of the film on March 7th so both adults and children who know the soundtrack word for word can sing-a-long-a-Frozen to their heart’s content. Strong by name, strong by nature, Zoe takes part in Gordon Ramsay triathlon IMAGINE being chosen to join a select team of people personally selected by Gordon Ramsay to be a part of an exclusive sporting fundraising club. Zoe Strong from Chelmsford is one of these, picked for his GR100 challenge. Zoe, a wedding and functions coordinator at Channels Golf Club, applied online to be one of the 100 dedicated, passionate, driven individuals the Gordon Ramsay Foundation is looking for to take part in the Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire triathlon challenge taking place on June 14th. Regarded as ‘one of the flattest, fastest triathlons on the 2015 sporting calendar, it is not for the fainthearted; consisting of a 1.2 mile open water swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a half marathon. Just a week after she had applied, Zoe received a phone call saying she had made it into the team and that she was exactly what they were looking for. The Gordon Ramsay Foundation aims to raise two million in two years with this Ironman being the first challenge of many raising money for Cancer Research UK, Scottish Spina Bifida Association, Meningitis Now, Lois Centre for

Palliative Care in Great Ormond Street and Action Against Hunger. Zoe has always kept active. She used to play football for Chelmsford City ladies FC and take part in local duathlons a competition composed of running and cycling. “I have taken part in a lot of charity activities in the past such as a few skydives, the three peak challenge and many bike rides in and around Essex,” she says. “Plus a couple of sprint triathlons over the past two years but they are so tiny compared to this event. This is a huge challenge for me with extensive hours of training and
mental positivity. I have never taken part in such a challenging yet exciting adventure and it falls on my 30th birthday and I wanted a challenge, so this is perfect.” Zoe has been provided with a five-month training program by top experts which she is trying to complete each week. It includes a minimum of seven sessions a week being either on the bike, running, swimming and strengthening exercises. “We have a GR100 team Facebook group where we can share training tips and advice and words of encouragement to each other. I am so excited to be a part of this Ironman Stafford 70.3 and so excited to be racing alongside Gordon Ramsay,” she adds. Zoe is hosting a quiz night at Essex Cricket Ground on April 15th. All funds raised will go towards her GR100 sponsorship target of £2,500. “The quiz night is open to anybody who would like to come to a fun evening to help me raise money for the Gordon Ramsay Foundation. A
S a tall man, Essex born Olympian and World Champion swimmer Mark Foster, 44, knows more than most of the hardships surrounding this issue. Standing at just over 6’5ft, Mark found shopping in his home town of Billericay and beyond a chore and a bugbear, as finding clothes to fit and suit his svelte athletic frame was a constant battle. But after a coincidental meet with Ted Baker’s founder and chairman Ray Kelvin, while travelling through the French Polynesia the two hit it off and decided to take this tall task on. While debates and dilemmas were discussed on how best to fit tall people, Ted Baker decided to work with Mark as a consultant, designer and face of a new range of suits and smart casual wear aptly named ‘T for Tall’. Perfectly designed for the dapper gent who has a head for heights (6’3-6’6ft) the collection includes a three-piece suit, classic Ted Baker shirts, contrast coloured polos, colour block knitwear, dress coats and a variety of coloured chinos, a one-stop shop for the tall gent that wants to look his sartorial best.
Q: What was it that made you do this collection? A: It’s hard to find fashionable clothes anywhere that fitted me properly. There are a lot more tall people in the world today, so it made perfect sense to create a range that catered for this.
Q: Why did you choose to work with Ted Baker? A: I’ve been a friend of Ray Kelvin, the founder and chief executive of Ted Baker for over 10 years and we have often talked about fashion. I always moaned about not being able to find fashionable clothes to fit and he always commented/teased me that my trousers and shirts were always to short. It was only recently we decided to put that right by making a TALL range for men like me!
Q: Is there much choice out there on the high street for tall men?
A: Personally I don’t find that there is much variety out there at all for Tall people. Other brands often assume that if you are tall, you are also wide - posing quite a problem for the more athletic body type! With this in mind, creating a range specifically for tall people provides this customer with so much more choice – something that they are not used to! Q: What is your advice to tall men on shopping for clothes and have style dilemmas? A: Buy classic pieces that you can mix and match with key seasonal items to update your style. The T for Tall collection makes this really possible as it offers a capsule collection of mainline styles in a taller size range.
Q: What was your design influences when creating T for Tall? A: My main input with the T for Tall collection is during the fit and sizing stages. In terms of the design, the T for Tall collection takes key pieces from the mainline collection and recreates them for the tall man. I love the Ted Baker collections, I am happy that there is now a range that fits me too!
Q: You grew up in Billericay in Essex, where was the place to go when you were a teenager and how difficult was it back then to shop for Tall sizes? A: Growing up anywhere at this time was
Q: What is your favourite item in the collection? A: If I had to pick one piece, it would be the suits. I like to wear them more often now as they feel so comfortable and smart. I also like to mix the suit jackets with the more casual jeans, chinos or lightweight knits.
Q: You are choosy about the fabrics, what makes the fabric in your suits special? A: When I go out in the morning I might have three separate appointments during the day, as well as an evening engagement. So what I choose to wear has to be versatile and the fabrics durable - Ted really does deliver on this. As well as the adaptability of each outfit, it’s all the quirky yet subtle details that make every item recognisable as Ted Baker. extremely difficult to get clothes, there wasn’t anywhere local to buy clothes to fit me and certainly no fashionable clothes. Luckily, as a teenager I was already competing an awful lot so my sports kit and training clothes were my main go-to outfits! Outside of swimming, I had to go up to sizes XXL in clothes so that the arms or body would be long enough. I was not exactly a style icon in my teens!
Q: Who is your ultimate style icon and why? A: I have always loved Ted’s clothes but sadly could never get them to fit me, so this collaboration has been a dream come true for me. Looking at other well-dressed men you have to give a nod to David Beckham who just makes it look effortless.

The Isle of Wight is one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. But for music lovers, no visit to the Island would be complete without delving into its Rock‘n’Roll past and present, says Ian Weightman
T
HE award winning Isle of Wight Festival revels in history. It all began with a series of Festivals between 1968 and 1970, widely acknowledged as Europe’s equivalent of Woodstock. In 1970 Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez and the Moody Blues among others, played to over 600,000 people. In 1969, Bob Dylan made his first appearance in three years, having become a recluse, and Hendrix was the climax of a five-day music extravaganza in 1970. In 2002 after a 32-year hiatus the Isle of Wight Festival was reincarnated by John Giddings, who attended the event in 1970 at East Afton Farm. Since its rebirth 13 years ago, the Festival has its own history and has played host some of the biggest acts in the world, who have crossed the Solent to grace the Main Stage, including the likes of The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band, Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon, Jay-Z, The Who, David Bowie, Coldplay, Muse, The Sex Pistols and Blondie. The Isle of Wight Festival continues to play a huge part in the diverse cultural heritage of the Island and for music fans this presence is evident throughout. Music lovers who want to be
transported back in time can visit hidden gem, Dimbola, where there is permanent photographic and memorabilia exhibition. Taking visitors through the Isle of Wight Festival history right up to present day, this is a unique chance to see where it all started. Rare posters, programmes, press cuttings, tickets, and memorabilia of the original event are on show. Outside Dimbola there is a small memorial garden with a statue of Jimi Hendrix designed by sculptor John Swindells. This life-size bronze is a lasting memorial to the legendary performance from Hendrix in 1970 and commemorates his last UK show before his untimely
death. The statue is set amidst a specially planted meditation area and dressed just as he was in 1970, when he brought his ‘message to love’ to the Island. This year’s Isle of Wight Festival takes place from June 11th to 14th, and is the first major music event of the summer. It couldn’t be easier to travel to the Isle of Wight, which is located just two-and-a-half hours from London.
Other Music Festivals closer to home Essex’s much-loved boutique festival, Fling Festival, is back again at Hylands Park, Chelmsford on Saturday July 4, with a unique mix of live music, cabaret, comedy and a range of activities that promises to offer festival-goers a chance to explore their creative side. The Fling is like no other, it’s a festival where a diversity of entertainment is celebrated with surreal theatre, fantastical storytelling and curious sideshows; and the under-the-radar talent this festival manages to unearth will entertain audiences well into the night. Previous years the festival has attracted top acts including: Public Service Broadcasting, The Cuban Brothers, plus comedy genius Simon Munnery and master of chap-hop, Mr B. The Gentleman Rhymer. The line-up to this year’s event will be announced shortly. Interesting facts about the ms Marco Polo • Marco Polo, formerly known as Alexandr Pushkin was built 1965 in former East Germany as the second of a quintet of ‘poet’ class ships named after Russia’s greatest poets and writers. • Her regular transatlantic service sailed between Leningrad, Bremerhaven, London, Le Havre and Montreal through to the late Seventies. • She was renamed Marco Polo in the early 1990s and a renovation entailing the entire gutting of the ship and lasting almost three years at the cost of US$60 million was
carried out. • The original ship’s bell from Alexandr Pushkin is now on display on board in the Nansen Card Room. • She embraced her maiden voyage as Orient Lines’ Marco Polo from Mombasa to Cape Town in November 1993. • In March 2008, Marco Polo was acquired by her present owners, Greece’s Global Cruise Lines, and operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages offering a wide variety of itineraries, from the Norwegian fjords to the Amazon, the Canaries to the Caribbean.

Supporting those who care It’s more than 30 years since Saint Francis Hospice began providing care for local people affected by a life-limiting illness. Today it provides support to more than 4,000 people every year across four boroughs including Havering and Brentwood.
S
AINT Francis Hospice can mean a huge amount for some people even though they never visit the hospice’s physical home at Havering-atte-Bower. These days 85% of all patients cared for by Saint Francis Hospice are cared for in their own homes. Laura Hockley, from Harold Hill, saw first-hand what care at home can mean when the hospice cared for her father, Kenneth, a former firefighter. Laura tells the story: “My father was cared for at home by the district nurses who visited three or four times a day. Choosing that option meant we could be with dad and have that precious time with him. A Saint Francis Hospice at Home nurse called Pauline spent the last two days of my dad’s life with us. She was such a help to us all. She was friendly, answered any questions we had, and most of all she treated my dad with the utmost respect. My family and I will always be
grateful to Pauline for her help and comfort at such a difficult and sad time. She will always be in our thoughts. “I personally felt very grateful for the support Pauline gave us as a family as well as the fantastic job all the nurses at the hospice do. I felt I had to repay the care and support that was given to my family in some way so in 2012 my friend Stuart and I climbed Mount Snowdon in North Wales and raised £955 for the hospice. I also started volunteering at the hospice in April. I’m a ward visitor once a month on a Sunday night. I’ve also used the bereavement counselling service the hospice provides and know what a great job they do. Christina (a volunteer bereavement support worker) has been a great support and help to me and I am very thankful to her.” The vision of Saint Francis Hospice is to see more people choosing where they spend their final days and for most

If patients should however need to come into the hospice for more intensive nursing care, the hospice tries to make it the next best thing to being at home. For Joan Ryan, this made all the difference. Her daughter, Sam, was 32 when she was cared for by the hospice. After several years of treatment, Sam was referred to the hospice for pain management. Joan says “The privacy that we had, coupled with the flexibility that allowed her family and friends to visit at any time of the day was just wonderful. Sam was comfortable, out of pain, and had 24-hour care in such a lovely place. I wouldn’t have been able to look after her in the same way at home. Sam’s time in the hospice allowed me to become her Mum again, and I will never be able to thank them enough for giving me such precious time with my

beautiful daughter. I was there next to her on her last night.”
The hospice looks after people of any faith or background and there’s no charge for its services. It is a registered charity that employs more than 200 of its own nurses, doctors and health professionals and needs to raise nearly £7 million every year from the general public to supplement the small amount of funding it receives from the NHS.

HE result: her compelling book Reading the World: Confessions of a Literary Explorer, a compelling roller-coaster journey which tells the story of the amazing challenge she set herself. We caught up with Ann to find out more about her Reading the World project 1. You set yourself the enormous challenge of reading a book from every country in the world in the space of just one year. How and why did you come to do this? A comment from someone got me thinking about how little literature I used to read from countries other than the UK and US. I couldn’t explain this, so I decided to spend 2012 (a very international year for the UK, what with the Olympics and Jubilee) trying to read a novel, short-story collection or memoir from every UN-recognised country (plus Taiwan). As I didn’t know what to choose or even how to find books from some places, I decided to ask the world’s booklovers to help me with advice and suggestions. I put a call out on social media and before long I was inundated with recommendations and other offers of help. 2. How many countries are there in the world? It depends on where you live and your politics. In the end I went for UN-recognised countries, plus Taiwan, which used to be a UN member. That gave me 196 countries. Towards the end of the year, I also asked blog visitors to vote to choose one extra territory to stand for those places not represented on the UN list. This turned out to be Kurdistan. 3. How easy was it to find books from all the countries? It wasn’t easy at all in many cases. Because there aren’t books from every country on the shelves of any bookshop, this involved doing a lot of research, contacting experts and enthusiasts around the world, and keeping my fingers very firmly crossed. In many cases, I had to rely on unpublished translations sent to me by authors or translators. And when it came to the Portuguese-speaking nation of Sao Tome & Principe, the only way I could think of to get hold of a book I could read was to ask volunteers to help me by translating a shortstory collection specially. Amazingly, lots of strangers around the world replied, offering their services and, within six weeks, I had the entire collection to read.

book world Journalist Ann Morgan set out to read a book from every one of the world’s 196 countries and succeeded.
obviously national favourites. And in the cases of countries with very little work in translation, I was often lucky to find even one option. India was perhaps the best example of a difficult decision. With more than 1.2 billion people and thousands of publishers, it has an almost unimaginable number of stories available. I had so many recommendations for books from there that I couldn’t begin to pick one – and everyone I asked to help me just suggested more books! Luckily, just when I thought I would never solve the conundrum, a woman called Suneetha Balakrishnan stopped by the blog. She was a journalist with the Indian newspaper The Hindu and she had an observation to make about the books that people had recommended: she noticed that all the titles were books that had been written in English. To her mind, this was second-best to titles written in India’s 22 other official languages and hundreds of other dialects. She suggested I try one of them and mentioned that one of her favourite authors was MT Vasudevan Nair, who writes in Malayalam. She really got me thinking and so I decided to follow her advice and found a translation of his novel Kaalam, which I very much enjoyed. The nice thing about this story is that Suneetha and I have stayed in touch. She interviewed me for The Hindu and recently contacted me to tell me that she had been inspired by our communications to launch a reading project of her own, highlighting India’s diverse literatures (readingacrossindia.wordpress.com). We’re still in touch to this day.
There are loads, but I suppose one of the most important for me is the way books can show us the world through another person’s eyes, and the enlargement of understanding and empathy this gives us (something neuroscience has provided compelling evidence to support in recent years, with numerous studies showing reading and imagining have the power to restructure our brains). If you’re only reading texts written by writers local to you, you are likely to be exposed to a relatively narrow range of perspectives. By contrast, reading far beyond your national borders gives you the opportunity to develop your thinking and your ability to put yourself in someone else’s place to a much greater extent.

But yes, it would be great to see publishers, bookshops and libraries being more proactive in seeking out works from further afield. Readers can also help drive that change. If we request a wider range of things to read, and buy and borrow more translated books it will encourage those in the industry to bring more of the world’s stories to the UK.
6. Do you feel changed in any way by your year’s adventure in so many countries? Oh absolutely. I’m much more aware of the complexity of situations around the world and more conscious of some of the assumptions that underpin my own thinking and the stories that surround us here in the UK. And I now have great network of friends and fellow booklovers all around the globe. Also, the project enabled me to realise my ambition of being a published author with my book Reading the World: Confessions of a Literary Explorer, so that’s a big change too.
10. Can you recommend a particular book that would be a good one for celebrating World Book Day on March 5th? One book I love is An African in Greenland, a memoir by the Togolese explorer TétéMichel Kpomassie. He ran away from home as a teenager to go to live with the Inuit and the book is the story of his 11-year odyssey from Africa to Greenland and what he found when he got there. It’s funny, wise and touching and it brings in a lot of the world.

I would recommend starting with Africa, because it’s traditionally been very neglected and there are some fantastic stories that are becoming increasingly easy to find. In fact This is Africa recently did a list of the top 100 African books of the last five years (thisisafrica.me/lifestyle/tia-100-bestbooks-2010-2014/) – a great starting point.
9. You’ve previously spent a year reading and blogging about books by women, and now world literature - which has become your marvellous book, Reading the World. Any plans for another big reading project? Thanks. To be honest, at the moment I’m still reading the world. Although the project officially finished at the end of 2012, people continue to get in touch with suggestions and I still update the list of suggested titles on the site. I also do a ‘Book of the month’ slot where I write about one book that has come to my attention each month. What with that and all the speaking engagements and events I’ve been lucky to be invited to do, I’m pretty busy! There will definitely be other projects further down the line though.

Date night Paella Valenciana Traditionally made with rabbit but here we are using free-range chicken. Ingredients
This is so super quick to prepare but tastes great and for a midweek date night dinner it’s perfect. Great served on the side with pasta or to bulk up a salad. Ingredients Rustic bread (sourdough is great) cut into slices Garlic clove Sea salt Large ripe vine tomato Extra virgin olive oil
Method: Slice your bread into medium to thick slices, toast until golden brown. Peel the garlic clove and cut in half. Now rub the cut side of the garlic twice over each slice of toast, next cut the tomato in half and rub the tomato (seeds and all) over the toast. Top with sea salt and finally drizzle with olive oil. de Goni tip: Jazz this up by laying 1 anchovy over each slice or with simply top with roasted peppers.
250g Paella rice (Bomba is a good brand) Sea salt a good pinch Olive oil 0.5g Saffron 1 litre chicken stock ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika Green beans (French or runner) 50g butter beans Free-range chicken thighs on the bone Sofrito: ½ Onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic finely chopped ½ Green pepper finely chopped ½ tin chopped tomatoes
Method: Get all your ingredients ready to throw in the pan. Make up your chicken stock and add your saffron strands to the liquid. Put your pan on the heat and add a good pinch of sea salt, wait until the pan is really hot and add a good splash of olive oil, now add the chicken thighs and fry until nicely browned on all sides. Next add the runner beans and cook for a minute, then add your paprika, give this a good stir and follow with the sofrito, cook for a further 5 minutes and then add the chicken stock. Simmer for a couple of minutes and then add the rice evenly throughout the pan, give it one good stir and then turn the pan up to a high heat and cook for 10-12 minutes before turning the heat right down and adding the peas and white beans. Now simmer for a further 5-7 minutes, do not stir the mixture. If the rice still looks slightly uncooked when the cooking time is up turn the heat off and cover and stand for 5 to 10 minutes. The crispy layer at the bottom of the pan is called socarrat and it is an important part of the paella. For Vegetarians: Make the paella all as above substituting the chicken stock for vegetarian stock. In the place of the chicken add jarred artichokes, sliced red pepper and asparagus spears.
Raspberry & almond tart
One slice is never enough when it comes to this delicious tart, make ahead of time and try not to eat it all before dinner! Ingredients 250g Raspberries 67.5g unsalted butter 45g caster sugar 1/2 egg + 1 yolk 135g plain flour For the cream: 150g unsalted butter Method:
150g caster sugar 2 eggs + 2 yolks 150g ground almonds 3 tablespoons of plain flour Zest of 1 lemon
Cream the butter and sugar until soft and smooth, then add the yolk and egg slowly mixing all the time. Stir in the flour and mix all together into a ball. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 160c. Roll the pastry out and line the tart case 24cm is a perfect size, the pastry should be 3-5mm thick. Almond cream filling: beat the butter and sugar until soft and smooth. Then add the eggs and yolks slowly until it is all combined, stir in the flour, ground almonds and lemon zest and mix until all combined. Prick the pastry base and add half the raspberries, now spoon in the cream mixture and top with the remaining raspberries. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 40-50minutes until golden brown.

Ingatestone Choral Society Musically hitting the right notes

INGING has always been a great way to form friendships with like minded people and this is very much evident within the Ingatestone Choral Society. For 67 years they have been singing in the quaint village of Ingatestone. The venues may have changed throughout those years but the enthusiasm for producing good music has not. The Choral Society has a rich history of performing works by all the great composers and under the guidance of Bruce Pennick and Martyn Heald, the Society’s much valued conductor and accompanist, they continue this important choral tradition. Their links with the village of Ingatestone are strong, which is very

also a popular concert fixture with a mix of audience participation, choir and readings. The mulled wine and mice pies during the interval are also an essential part of the evening. On Remembrance Day 2014, the Society commemorated the outbreak of World War I, with a performance as part of the Remembrance Service in the Parish Church, which included works such as Performing at the Victorian Elgar’s Spirit Evening in the Parish Church of England and Andrew Wright’s Requiem of Peace conducted Their annual Carol Concert which by Bruce Pennick. is held in either in the Parish Church Today’s choir which numbers or the United Reformed Church, is

Conductor Bruce Pennick leading Ingatestone Choral Society over fifty singers, performs music in four, six or sometimes eight parts. No auditions take place and choir members don’t have to be able to read music. You are simply encouraged to come along with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Rehearsals are greatly enjoyed by all members and a high standard of singing is achieved. Anyone wanting to join the Choral Society would be made very
welcome as a singer or as part of the audience. Their next performance takes place on Saturday March 21st when they will be joining Brentwood Choral Society to perform Requiems by Durufle and Faure in Brentwood Cathedral at 7pm. On May 2nd there will be a performance at the Drapers Academy, Harold Hill where the Society will sing with several local choirs to perform Verdi’s Requiem.
The Society meets every Wednesday from 8pm-10pm at the United Reformed Church opposite the Post Office. Musical scores are supplied and the first half-term is free to new members. Mazda at Goodwood THE 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed will pay tribute to the innovation and achievements in motoring and motorsport by Mazda with a spectacular Central Feature in honour of the Japanese manufacturer. Created by renowned sculptor Gerry Judah and Mazda, it will provide a spectacular backdrop to the Festival of Speed which runs from June 25-28. Set spectacularly against the iconic sight of Goodwood House, the Central Feature will celebrate Mazda’s 95-year history, and its numerous international motor sport achievements. Mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer to have won the Le Mans 24 Hours with its rotary-engined 787B, with its distinctive sound, is certain to be a crowd favourite as it winds its way up Goodwood’s iconic 1.16-mile Hillclimb. Mazda will showcase its range of SKYACTIV vehicles in the Moving Motor Show on June 25.

World première for Tucson WITH its worldwide public debut just weeks away at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the all new Hyundai Tucson is set to redefine the brand’s SUV offering featuring the highest levels of design, quality and technology. The front of the All-New Tucson is dominated by the Hyundai signature hexagonal front grille, which connects with the LED headlamps to create a distinctive face. As well as introducing new soft-touch, high-quality materials across cabin surfaces, the interior has undergone extensive ergonomic testing to ensure ease of use and a pleasant experience. The All-New Tucson is built on a completely new platform which features generous interior dimensions. Powertrains include two petrol engines: 135PS 1.6-litre or 176PS, plus three diesel options of 115 PS 1.7-litre, 136PS or 184PS 2.0-litre high power. Gearboxes are either a seven-speed dualclutch transmission or a six-speed manual. All engines have been enhanced to offer improved driveability and fuel efficiency, as well as meeting Euro6 emission standards. After making its public World première at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the all newTucson will go on sale in Europe during the second half of 2015.

Anniversary special editions from Dacia DACIA will celebrate the 10th anniversary since its European re-launch in 2005 at the Geneva International Motor Show where new special edition versions of the Sandero, Duster and Logan MCV will be unveiled. Ten years have passed since the Logan was launched in Europe in 2005, heralding the
dawn of a bright new era for the Romanian brand Dacia, whose Renault-led rebirth proved to be the catalyst for unprecedented levels of success across the continent. To celebrate, Dacia is producing a series of special edition versions across its range, including the Sandero, Duster and Logan MCV.
In the UK, this special edition will be called Lauréate Prime. True to the brand’s ethos and image, these special edition vehicles will be well-equipped, and will come in an exclusive metallic Cosmos Blue finish. They will be equipped with a new multimedia and navigation package as standard, Dacia’s Media Nav Evolution.

Variety is the key
I
t’s what’s called a compact crossover vehicle, with this segment of the industry having grown from an initial 5% of the total car market in 2004 to 20% in 2014. Like the 500L, introduced in 2012, it is significantly bigger than the very popular 500 and aims to set new standards of build quality, passenger space and on-board technology. The higher ground clearance and approach and departure angles enable the car to tackle some reasonably serious offroad situations. In this regard, the 500X has been given robust wheel arches and door sections. Available from April, prices starts at £14,595 for the petrol 1.6 model and reaches a jawdropping £25,845 for the top model: the 2.0 Multijet diesel with 140 hp, all-wheel-drive and a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Equipment in all models seems impressive. The driver has the option to choose from three ‘moods’ (Fiat-speak for modes). Turning a knob gets the car to assume Auto, Sport, or All Weather/Traction Plus – the last depending on the model.
For comfort and convenience, the Fiat 500X offers claimed categorytopping content, thanks to its sophisticated Uconnect systems with 5 or 6.5 inch touchscreens which provide access to radio, media, telephone and Uconnect live services. Both versions come complete with Bluetooth interface, aux-in connector, USB port and voice commands. Using the colour touchscreen, the system lets you access all the main functions: and all of this can be managed directly using the steering wheel controls, so there’s no need to take your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel which is a welcome important safety feature. Two versions were available at launch, one urban-themed and the other ideal for leisure use. Five trim levels of Pop, Popstar, Lounge, Cross and Cross Plus, with engine options of 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and diesels of 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0-litre capacity in a variety of power outputs. When it comes to safety, for example, there are two front airbags, two window bags and two side airbags in addition to the ABS with EBD, daytime running lights and a comprehensive electronic stability control system. Another good feature is the Automatic Demisting that allows the Fiat 500X’s Automatic Temperature Control system (ATC) to measure the humidity level inside the vehicle and automatically demist the windscreen without any intervention by the driver. I tried two cars: first was the top-of-the-range 2.0 Multijet II 140 bhp with the automatic 9-speed gearbox. At £25,845 this is up in very challenging territory and, frankly, you’d have to be a huge Fiat fan – nicely though it goes and welltrimmed though it is – to veer away from buying one of the

lower-range offerings from the accepted ‘prestige’ makes. Having said that, this diesel was very pleasant to drive, quiet, comfortable and easy to manoeuvre. Brisk driving on suitably twisty roads in northern Italy proved that the handling is excellent and braking right up to the mark. As was to be expected, the gearchanges in the ninespeed box were pretty well undetectable. The ride was very good, with only an occasional unseemly thump from the rear suspension on the very worst of surfaces. The other car sampled was a petrol Turbo MultiAir II 1.4, also with 140 bhp and with a manual 6-speed gearbox It was noticeably smoother than the bigger diesel, with less
torque of course, and the gearchange was nice, too, although I felt that the large gear-knob did make the actual changes feel slightly less slick than they might otherwise have been. Space is quite good; two adults would be quite comfortable on a long journey. The rear seats are very easy to fold and restore and the boot has a neat double-decker floor. Fiat has been at pains to
emphasise the family likeness across their 500 range. Yes, the car has a ‘face’ and perhaps a rear end that, with imagination, could do that job, but whatever is in the eye of the beholder is perhaps less important than how the car feels and performs. In the 500X’s case, it’s sure to do well for them: there is something in the range that will work for a wide variety of needs.

With the midweek departures and unavailability of other squad members Paul Martin just about managed to find 12 fit players by drafting in three youngsters from an associated junior club. French title eludes Alice BILLERICAY’S Alice Green came within a whisker of adding the French Junior Open title to her English and British crowns on Sunday when she was narrowly beaten in the Under-15 final in Lille by European No.1 Alina Bushma from the Ukraine. Unseeded Alice, 13, currently ranked number five in England, came through a testing route to the final facing number two seed Ciara Richards from Wales in her opening match. After winning that tough encounter 3-1, Alice then faced another fancied opponent in the shape of Georgia Adderley from Scotland. Buoyed by her win over Richards, Alice, who plays at Club Kingswood in Basildon, was brimming with confidence and took just 37 minutes to take out her opponent 3-0. Next up was Avon’s Karina Tyma, higher ranked in England than Alice and 11 months older. Karina took the opening game 11-9 but Alice’s confidence was not dented as she stormed back to win the next three, 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 and put herself into the showpiece final In what proved to be one of the longest matches in the tournament, 49 minutes, Alice won the opening game 11-9 showing she was not daunted by taking on the number seed. Bushma hit back edging the next two 11-6, 11-7, preluding a cracking fourth game which had the packed house enthralled. Despite a monumental effort from the Essex player, a relieved Bushma scraped over the line taking the game 15-13. n Essex had four other players in action at the event, all producing creditable displays and finishes. Aaron Allpress reached the third round of the U-17’s before falling to the number one seed. His victories over Andrea Bo of Norway and Matis Lautier of France helped him to claim 12th place overall. Oliver Green (U-13), Robert Pearson (U-19) and Conor Adams (U-17), all bagged opening round victories before the suffering their first defeats. Oliver finished 17th, Conor 24th and Robert 32nd. Both Nathan W and Marcello put their bodies on the line to stop the Pumas from getting an early goal and to say it was end to end would be no exaggeration. It was the Puma’s number two who opened the scoring with a long range effort which bobbled in front of Ben and bounced up over him and into the back of the net. The Jets did not let this get them down however. A free kick to Marcello was a little too powerful for Haydn to get too and Jake B once again managed to get through the middle with Ethan and Haydn passing the ball well. Jake D found himself defending and managed to get the ball to Jake B whilst Shaun and Jack worked well at the front together but to no avail.

Waites shows his class LUKE Waites of Hornchurch Boxing Club, bought success to the Kilmartin Way-based club recently when he was crowned the London ABA Youth Boxing Champion. With this regional title under his belt, he travelled to Durham last Friday to take part in the National Finals. The sixteen-year-old won his quarter final but lost in the semi final to an opponent who was two years his senior.

Myles, from the Comets, came on as sub to give Shaun a rest when a second Puma goal went in. Shaun came back on for Nathan W and the Jets did well to stamp out any Puma threat. The team talk at half time and a slight change in formation seemed to have the desired effect as the Jets were very much on top during the second half. Marcello remained solid at the back and ensured that the ball kept on going forward. Shaun was once again on target and Jake D’s long shot just went wide. Jake B came close again and a lovely one two from Jack to Jake D saw the ball passed to Jake B who couldn’t make the most of the opportunity. Ethan made a well-timed tackle towards the end of the game but it was all Radars – surely after this performance its only a matter of time before they win. A fantastically entertaining, if a little frustrating, game for the fans today and certainly the Jets should feel positive about their second half performance.

HE Big Cats moved up to third place in the Division One table with a comfortable 77-69 victory against Tees Valley Mohawks at Harlow last Saturday. The scoreline flattered the visitors with Leopards holding a 74-47 lead with 6:32 remaining before they took their foot off the gas and allowed the visitors to close out the game on a 22-3 run. Ajumobi and Will Ashby led the hosts’ scoring with 15 points apiece, with Ajumobi adding 14 rebounds. Margai finished with 12 points, with Courtney Van Beest adding nine points. In a tight first half, Leopards turned a 16-15 opening period break into a 35-33 lead going into the locker room. But a 16-2 third period run from the home side saw them blow the game open as they took a 64-47 lead into the final break and with Matic Zupanc and Mark Denchfield burying three-pointers

in a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter the game was effectively over despite Mohawks’ late surge. n Leopards will look to complete a perfect season at Harlow LeisureZone on Saturday when they host Hemel Storm, tip-off 7.30pm. All four of the Big Cats’ home games in March are at the Brentwood Centre, and Robert Youngblood’s team will aim to make it an eighth straight victory at Harlow when they face a Storm side who are struggling against relegation. Having finished third in the table last season, they are now third from bottom with a 5-12 record and face a tough runin with as they face all of the top three during the final weeks of the campaign.

HOT SHOT LADIES FROM STONYHILL FOUR players from Stonyhill indoor bowls club in Brentwood are celebrating after scoring a hot shot - the maximum number of shots possible in one end of a game. Ann Betts (lead), Jenny Hyland, Beryl Robinson and Moira Baker (skip) were playing a team from Rayleigh in the county league game and trailing by one shot as they went into the eighth end and rolled all their eight woods into the count. A club spokesman said: “It’s very unusual to see a hot shot in a game at this level. It’s something we’re more used to seeing at club level but even then, it doesn’t happen that often.” The game on Friday, February 13th, was the second of a two-part fixture with one game at home and one away. In the first leg, the Stonyhill away team - Barbara Hann (lead), Jean Miller, Marje Shute and Margaret Rayment (skip) finished just one shot ahead with a final score of 19-18, leaving little room for error by the home team. But the hot shot gave Stonyhill a safety margin which their opponents were unable to close and the final score was 24-19, giving Stonyhill an overall six-shot victory. The four ladies are now eligible to join the ranks of the elite Hot Shots Club which is managed by Bowls International magazine. Their names will be added to the club’s hall of fame in the next issue of the magazine and they qualify for individual certificates and badges to mark their achievement. LES POWELL
The Big Cats have already travelled to Hertfordshire twice this season, winning 85-70 in November’s National Trophy game before picking up an 8571 league win in January. The game will see Leopards against former captain Carl Josey, while former coach Jon Burnell is now assistant coach at Hemel. Youngblood’s side are also in action on Sunday at Bradford Dragons and they will set off immediately after the Hemel game in preparation for the game. After being tipped to do well this season, the Yorkshire side have had a surprisingly poor season and are currently ninth in the table with a 6-11 record. The game at the Brentwood Centre saw Leopards win a thriller 62-60 as late scores from Albert Margai and Dave Ajumobi sealed the victory.

Winslow has busy racing year ahead WITHAM racing driver James Winslow will make his racing return to Europe with Gulf Racing in the 2015 European Le Mans Series. Winslow will pilot the Gulf-liveried Porsche RSR GTE, joining Mike Wainwright and Adam Carroll in the fiercely contested GTE category. Porsche is one of the most successful manufacturers in motorsport, and the partnership with Gulf Racing brings one of the best known liveries, both of which have competed at the most prestigious and historic events sporting the Le Mans name. Speaking about the announcement Winslow said: “I’m very excited about this season. Every racing driver wants to win races in the famous and nostalgic colours and brands that are Gulf and Porsche. “We have a very strong package in the Gulf
Racing Porsche for the 2015 European Le Mans Series (ELMS) season. “I am confident we can win races. I have raced with and known Adam Carroll for many years. We started our careers at the same time in the UK and both competed in A1GP together years later. “I’m totally aware of how good he is and look forward to joining him again, as I do Mike Wainwright who is becoming a serious threat on the GT scene.” As well as a wealth of experience in endurance racing, including a brilliant first stint where Winslow set the fastest lap time in
his class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014, Winslow is a seasoned championship and race winner in many series around the globe. Winslow’s ELMS season will see the Briton taking on a mammoth amount of travel as he combines it with racing commitments around the world.
