EW figures show the number of young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) is at an all-time low in the county.

The current percentage of young people who are NEET stands at 4.4%.

This means that out of the 50,000 young people Essex County Council has responsibility for supporting, only 2,146 are NEET. Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Councillor Kevin Bentley said: “Essex is a county

of opportunity and it is crucial that our young people know what opportunities are available.

“Whether this be through employment, continuing in education or gaining training and real-life work experience through programmes such as apprenticeships, the options are endless.

“These figures are a real cause for celebration and mean more of our young people are in jobs or are learning skills to help them onto the career ladder.’’

Essex County Council has a team of dedicated Employability and Skills

Advisers who work with 16-19-yearolds to support them.

The team has a responsibility to maintain contact and ensure relevant opportunities are available for all young people, with the main aim being to encourage and help them into education, employment and training.

In the last year the team has worked to place young people into opportunities in and around Essex that will develop their skills and where they are not currently employed help them to secure a job or training.

LANS for a country park on the outskirts of Shenfield on land between Mountnessing roundabout and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, could be the result of a development of land at Officers Meadow.

It is all part of Brentwood Borough Council’s Local Development Plan (LDP), which is subject to public consultation until February 17.

Sites must be found for 5,500 new homes to be built by 2030 and the council is asking for residents views on the matter.

The country park plan is the idea of Leader of Brentwood Council, Councillor Barry Aspinell, who said: “It has long been an emotive subject that Officers Meadow has been identified for housing, but the loss of that land would mean Shenfield would lose that space as greenery. “If I can get adjoining landowners to contribute as well by purchasing through monies from this development, we could have a park for public open space, which could include structured recreational play, facilities for football, cricket and organised games but also hundreds of acres of public open space that can be enjoyed by our residents.�

A PETITION against homes on land used by Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Sawyers Hall Lane has received an incredible response with more than 100,000 signatures of support including from singer and Hopefield patron Leona Lewis.

The land has been put forward as a potential new plot for new homes in the borough.

Hopefield has rented the land from Tesco since 1992 for a ‘peppercorn rent’, but

now the supermarket chain need to make ÂŁ250m cuts and are ‘‘reviewing their options.â€? The sanctuary is worried it could be forced to close.

Cllr Barry Aspinell has spoken of his desire for the council to purchase the land and see Hopefield expanded and enhanced possibly turning it into a tourist attraction. This would help secure its future and protect it as a Community Asset.

OING green means thinking long-term and ensuring our future health and happiness by carefully managing our planet and its resources.

Going green is important because many of the fossil fuels that we use everyday are limited. Not only that, but 87% of scientists agree that our use of fossil fuels is already causing our climate to change. In order to prevent dangerous levels of climate change, we must act now.

Fortunately, there are a number of steps that we can all take to go green, right here in Essex.

1. Get Paid to Go Green Homeowners around the UK are waking up to the financial incentives of going green. Here are three key financial schemes that you need to know about: Get paid to generate electricity with the FIT: The government currently pays homeowners who generate their own electricity through the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) at a rate of 12.57p per KiloWatt hour.

This means that a typical 4 kWp PV solar panel system not only protects you against rising energy prices, but also nets you a yearly income of £560.

Get money towards the costs of renewable heat with the RHI: Renewable heat devices, such as a heat pump, can generate enough thermal energy to keep us warm all year round, at a fraction of the operating costs of a conventional boiler. Not only that, but those who install renewable heat devices may be eligible for a yearly Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payment of between £2,325 and £3,690. You can even use your solar panels to power your heat pump to cut energy bills to the bone.

Get help funding your home improvements with the Green Deal: If you think that solar panels and renewable heat devices are out of

your price range, then you might not be aware of two important details.

Firstly, the price of solar panels has been falling dramatically in recent years, with some models costing 66% less than they did four years ago.

Secondly, the Green Deal, a government loan available to homeowners who want to make their homes more energy efficient, is designed to be available to 80% of the public. The costs of repayment should not exceed the savings on energy bills, and energy saving devices from insulation to solar panels are permitted To benefit from the Green Deal, you must go through a Green Deal assessor, and you must be sure that their assessment is accurate.

2. Get Involved with the Essex Wildlife Trust Our local wildlife is an asset that we must protect. There are many conservation charities, and perhaps none do more than the Essex Wildlife Trust. There are plenty of ways to volunteer with the Essex Wildlife Trust, from helping out in the visitor’s centre to campaigning on Ash dieback disease that is threatening our woodlands.

3. Support Local Essex Business Shopping at locally owned businesses is an excellent way to protect the environment and support the local economy. This is because local businesses tend to make more local purchases, which reduces the need for excessive transportation.

By walking to one the many independent shops in your local area, you help to reduce pollution, congestion and urban sprawl. Not only that, but local businesses are more likely to be environmentally friendly, donate to charity, create jobs and keep money within the community.

Essex teen makes final in search for a Top Model

A

TEENAGER from Chigwell has made it through to the final of the Top Model worldwide professional model search.

Molly Moore, 15 has seen off 4,000 applicants to become a finalist in the Commercial Category, one of six categories in the competition.

Molly who studies hair and beauty at Epping Forest College is no stranger to modelling.

She previously entered a competition called Face of the Globe in which she was picked to represent London in the UK heat last August. She won the teen section aged 14-17 out of six other girls and a trip to Disneyland Paris where represented England in the Face of the Globe Grand finals.

The Top Model professional model search competition is

now in its 9th year. It isn’t a beauty pageant but prides itself on its pure model search ethos. In addition to the model search, each year Top Model adopts a chose charity to raise awareness for and to support.

For 2015 they are once again supporting childhood cancer charity Children with Cancer UK. In 2014 they raised over £16,000 for the charity and since 2010 over £60,000.

The Top Model competitions will reach their climax at the Hilton London Metropole Grand Finals on March 13th and 14th. Voting closes on March 11th.

Essex won the 2015 Best Chippy Chips award and is now officially the “Best Fish and Chip Shop” in the South East of England and ranked no.6 in the entire country.

The family run business which has been going for nearly half a century serves thousands of people a week.

Jason Aiken took over from his father-in-law Jim Plows a couple of years ago. It was one of 840 chip shops to enter the competition nationally and received a share of more than 62,000 votes.

BIKERS could soon see a parking scheme that had a successful six-month trial, rolled out in Chelmsford.

Motoparking launched the pilot scheme of storage stations last year which enabled bikers to secure their bikes and store their riding gear inside two solid-steel units in Fairfield Road car park and one off Parkway.

Tony Impieri, UK Marketing Director for Motoparking said: “We would like to see about 20 in the city by spring but there will definitely be about 12 to 15 going in by then. They save people a lot of headaches and it’s obviously a good idea for people to be able to lock their gear away.”

The Italian businessman originally got the idea to bring the scheme to the UK after seeing the scheme work well in mainland Europe.

Mr Impieri added: When you go into towns you see so many bikes, and it’s nice for people to be able to leave their heavy bike ger and actually go an do other things, like car drivers do. The biggest challenge is getting the word out to bikers that the service is available.”

Chelmsford City Council is currently in talks with Motoparking to roll out more of the storage stations.

Kick-Start your business dream

New initiative created to help aspiring young entrepreneurs

T

HE search is on for aspirational young entrepreneurs who could use some help and expertise in turning their business dreams into a reality.

Havering College of Further and Higher Education has joined forces with sports legend and Matchroom Sport CEO Barry Hearn and Saint Francis Hospice for the 2015 Kick-Start Challenge, a small business start-up competition.

Havering residents aged 16-21 years old are invited to submit an application form and business proposal for consideration into the Kick-Start Challenge sponsored by Matchroom Sport.

Successful applicants could be in line to receive £500 and the opportunity to run their own

business for six months. They will also be matched up with a local business mentor.

All money raised during the first six months of being in business will go to Saint Francis Hospice. The competitor (or competitors) who have raised the most money by the close of the competition will win £1,500, a year’s free membership to the Young Havering Chamber of Commerce and the offer of work experience at both Matchroom Sport and Saint Francis Hospice.

Next Wednesday February 25th Havering College is hosting a KickStart Challenge application advice session with Barry Hearn in The

Hub at its Ardleigh Green Campus between 1pm-4pm.

ESIDENTS in Pilgrims Hatch secured a victory after their petition to stop the closure of the Post Office counter located in the Co-op, contributed to it staying open.

The Post Office described as a ‘vital lifeline’ for local elderly and disabled residents by Mayof of Brentwood, Councillor Vicky Davies, was threatened with closure at the end of April 2014 because it was making a loss.

Following the campaign launched by Cllr Davies and Leader of Brentwood Council Barry Aspinell the decision has been reversed. The petition rounded up 190

signatures proving community spirit well and truly still exists in the village.

The decision was also helped by the discovery of a clause in the Co-op’s lease that relates to the provision of Post Office services at the store.

A spokesperson for The Co-Operative Food said: “Post Office services are to be retained in The Co-operative’s Pilgrims Hatch store. The Co-operative hopes that the community will support the service and help to create a viable and sustainable Post Office.”

Chinese New Year serves up a treat

From horticulture to hits, Gardening expert Andrew Babicz has it all SUGGESTING that a Community Radio should have a gardening slot to Phoenix FM chairman Paul Golder, was how Andrew Babicz first got into presenting on the local radio station.

The Horticultural Consultant, Broadcaster, Writer and Britain in Bloom Judge is one of the station’s longest serving broadcasters having fronted the ‘Sunday Best’ slot every weekend since Phoenix first went on air in 2007.

Full of essential green-fingered hints and tips, it’s the perfect show to ease into if you’re a garden lover or want to find out more about your pruning, edging and planting needs.

“If you like a gentle Scottish accent, Sunday morning music and want to know what to do this week in the garden then you can catch me from 10am to 12 midday every Sunday,” says Andrew.

His horticultural career spans decades having been gardening professionally since the age of 17 but before that his father encouraged him to garden with him. He also studied at two of the country’s most prestigious horticultural establishments. “I studied at the Royal Horticultural Societies garden Wisley and at the Royal Botanic Garden

in Edinburgh,” he explains.

It’s no surprise then, that as well as his radio show, Andrew is a judge for Britain in Bloom and gives talks and lectures to local groups as well as writing gardening articles.

“What fascinates me about gardening is the variety of different types of gardening and how you can quickly become addicted to one in particular and for me at the age of 14 it was Cacti. I would now class myself as an “all rounder” liking all areas of gardening!”

So how does Andrew describe his show? “It covers all aspects of gardening including the wildlife that visits our gardens. You can also hear interviews with celebrities such as Charlie Dimmock, Christine Walkden and James Wong to name drop a few.

“The great thing about having a gardening show on local radio is that it is right up to date with what you can do in the garden that week. Most national magazines are planned three months ahead so when the snow is falling or there is drought local radio can advise what to do immediately. The other great thing,” he adds, “is you can ask questions on

ER live show, “Psychic Sally On the Road”, is entering its seventh year and remains as popular as ever.

It seems people can’t get enough of the Fulham-born medium who dubs herself “an ordinary woman with an extraordinary gift”.

Sally, 63, explains that her psychic experiences began in childhood. “At four, I saw my first ghost. At a nursery, I noticed a man standing alongside a little girl at the end of a table – it was her grandfather. No one could see him so I went over and pointed to him.

Unfortunately, the assistant got cross and strapped me in a high chair for the rest of the morning!”

Before becoming a full-time medium, Sally – who lives in Surrey – was a dental nurse, giving readings casually to family and friends. “I was using my gift as a party piece. But it reached the point where I couldn’t continue doing it weekends or when people randomly arrived on my doorstep. I didn’t charge. Instead, people brought flowers, chocolates – even eggs!”

On reaching this important juncture in her life, she decided to quit the dental industry and become a professional medium. “Back then, I had three kids and a mortgage so needed to earn a wage.

That’s when I began charging – initially, £12 a reading.”

Before long, her lengthening client list included celebs and even royalty. For four years, she read for Princess Diana. “She was utterly charming but with exactly the same issues as anyone else.”

Sally’s live shows follow a tried and tested format. “I don’t want to sound conceited but it’s said that they’re entertaining – perhaps because I’m prepared to laugh at myself.”

The two-hour show kicks off with a three-minute film about Sally before the evening begins in earnest. She never knows how many spirits she’ll make contact with. “On average, I manage up to 40 messages a night from people’s loved ones.”

“For the first time in our lives, my whole family have had to install CCTV around our properties,” admits Sally, before recalling one of the worst threats she’s received.

Despite such threats, Sally refuses to let it detract from her objectives. “I do my work out of pure love and it’s an honour. I like showing people that talking about spirits and ghosts doesn’t have to be scary. I’ve never tried or wanted to convert anyone throughout my life as a medium. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and all I aim to do is share the possibility that there is an afterlife. If people find comfort in knowing that their loved ones are still with them, I think that’s a wonderful thing.”

Sally, author of several books, has appeared on many TV shows, including the fly-on-the-wall documentary, Psychic Sally’s Big Fat Operation, spotlighting her life-changing weight-loss operation.

Her weight had ballooned to a frightening 27 stone due to overeating and after suffering a minor heart attack, her future looked bleak without drastic action.

Sally underwent a gastric bypass and subsequently lost a staggering 16 stone.

Today, her weight fluctuates around the nine stone mark and she couldn’t be happier.

HOW DOES FENG SHUI WORK? How does Feng Shui work, you ask? From a design perspective, it is a way of organizing your environment to give it a peaceful, inviting atmosphere. Feng Shui means wind and water and it is about encouraging a good flow of Chi energy into your home that can move around you home like a gentle breeze or a flowing stream.

Feng Shui is a very ancient but very successful method of

adjusting the Chi energy flow of your home or business to improve your health, finances, relationships, family life, and reputation.

Chi is an invisible life force or energy that flows through all things. It is an energy that is more subtle than electric, magnetic and thermonuclear energies.

We know from quantum physics that there is an energy field underlying all things. The practice of traditional Chinese medicine is based upon the fact that the Chi of the body must be strong and in balance in order for the person to enjoy good health. Many experiments in quantum physics have showed us that these energy fields do exist and can be measured. What is most important is the discovery that through the power of our intention, we can manipulate and change these energy fields to improve the circumstances of our lives.

The Chi in our bodies work best when it is tuned to a particular frequency and this also applies to the Chi in our homes and businesses. The normal, healthy flow of Chi is often interrupted by how the rooms in our homes are arranged, where the furniture is placed, the colours, artwork and ornaments we use to decorate.

Added to this negative earth energies, electromagnetic fields from electric appliances and predecessor Chi from previous occupants will all have an effect on Chi flow.

“We know from quantum physics that there is an energy field underlying all things: which affects our Chi is our intent. In other words, how our Chi behaves is also affected by what we think and believe.

In Feng Shui, we may change certain physical attributes of our environment to get better Chi flow, but we must also ensure that we make a change in our thoughts and beliefs.

Feng Shui is a combination of changing the physical attributes of the environment and changing the non-tangible aspects as well. For instance, if you want to increase your wealth, you might put a water fountain in the wealth corner of your home, but at the same time you should visualize what the water represents, a continual stream of money coming into your home. However, if your

personal beliefs tell you that this is selfish, or that you don’t deserve it then these beliefs will interfere with your Chi. If you don’t believe you should have it, all the water fountains in the world aren’t going to bring it to you. So when you place a Feng Shui cure in your home, you must visualise exactly what you want. Get the emotional feeling that what you want to happen has happened. In doing this and visualising what your cure represents you can change the Chi in your home and how it functions.

We can control the progress of our Chi, and stop it where we want it to create the effects we desire. If you walk in your front door and can see all the way through and out the back door, you are losing all your Chi and you must stop that.

So, we use both physical and non-tangible ways of doing that. Physically, you can place a decorative folding screen or a large plant there to physically change the flow of Chi. Another remedy is to hang a crystal sphere from the ceiling which disperses the Chi in other directions that you need it to go.

But when you hang the crystal, you visualize your intent. Your intent is the non-tangible part of the cure. You visualize the Chi hitting the crystal and

going down the hallway to the bedrooms, or that it splits and some goes down the hall and some to the kitchen. Wherever you want it, we ask you to visualize your intent as you place the cure.

To put it simply - Feng Shui is a combination of design and intent, physical and nonphysical, tangible and nontangible.

HOW FENG SHUI CAN HELP IN THE HOME? ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO SELL IT. Declutter - get rid of all the excess stuff that has accumulated in every nook and cranny. Clutter you no longer want give to charity or sell on Ebay or at a car boot sale.

Consider removing any bulky furniture that makes the room feel small and replacing it with smaller furniture.

Give your walls a fresh lick of paint, neutral paint will make your home seem lighter and bigger.

Create a good first impression. Give the front door a new coat of paint if it needs it, or clean the front door so it looks appealing. Update the outside lights and put potted plants or hanging baskets either side of the front door.

Make sure you give the right impression. Paint the walls a neutral colour, remove any bulky furniture, upgrade the lighting and if you feel you need colour, add it with accessories and a rug.

Make any minor repairs – sticking doors, holes in walls, broken door knobs, cracked tiles, torn or threadbare carpets.

Many buyers want to move in without making changes, so allow for this.

Clean everything until it sparkles. Get rid of lime scale, clean and repair tile grout, wax wooden floors, get rid of all odours, hang up fresh towels.

Tidy up the garden. Cut bushes back, clean the patio and furniture from moss and dirt and cut the grass. This may help people visualize themselves using the garden.

The kitchen is the most valuable room in a house.

Declutter surfaces and clean the kitchen thoroughly. Just leave a bowl of fresh fruit out.

Wall mirrors make a room look much bigger and lighter.

Consider putting some up, especially in smaller rooms or hallways. Don’t put a mirror opposite the front door as this will cause the positive Chi

energy to bounce back out.

Clean windows inside and out, replace any broken light bulbs. Making the place feel light and airy makes rooms feel bigger and the property more attractive.

Ensure you have lamps in any dark corners. This will lift the energy in dark areas and by putting a soft lamp in a bedroom this will create a warm enticing glow.

If it’s a cold evening, or even chilly day, light your fire if you have one. If you don’t have a fire ensure the fireplace is clean.

Make sure the windows are properly dressed with blinds or curtains as naked windows make a place feel impersonal and run down. Buy some cheap ones e.g. from Ikea if necessary.

Plants and flowers bring colour, life and light to a room and also smell lovely. So does that fruit bowl on your kitchen counter.

Bad smells are the single biggest turn off for prospective buyers. Don’t just cover them up, fix the source of the smell.

Clear drains, wash bins, open windows, air the kitchen from old cooking smells, get rid of furniture that is embedded with cigarette smoke and wash any grimy bed sheets.

If you have pets, be careful because some love people love them, some hate them and some are allergic to them so make sure that on the viewing they are out of the house. Pet lovers will pay more attention to your pet and less attention to the home. Pet haters will feel uncomfortable, completely on their guard and rush around your property leaving as soon as they can. If you have a pet remove food bowls, baskets and litter trays.

Good smells can make a property feel appealing. While it might be impractical to bake fresh bread, cakes for every viewer that visits your home, you could perhaps brew some fresh coffee.

“Catch 22 –Should I Sell First or Buy?” One of the greatest frustrations associated with moving house in the current market is that you might feel somewhat exposed if you sell your own property before having found your new home.

It is reported that, nationally, estate agents take an average of fewer than just one new property onto their books per branch each week.

Although we enjoy a much greater supply of properties than this, it is easy to see why sellers become nervous at the general lack of property. Many who receive a good offer for their home turn it down because they have not yet found “the right property”.

our years on from founding his own company, Mark Friend-James is now at the helm of a successful outfit providing a full kitchen consultancy, design and fitting service from its base just outside Findon in West Sussex, at the foot of the South Downs.

Rightside Kitchens (RKL) undertakes a wide range of projects, from individual kitchen refurbishments to providing and installing large numbers of kitchens on new build developments for major housebuilders.

“I set myself the target to be available to both the trade and retail industry,” explains Friend-James. “I am happy doing a single property and have set the business up so that larger sites are easily managed too.”

Starting on the shop floor of a large kitchen manufacturer at the age of 18, Friend-James has worked in all aspects

of the industry, gaining experience on projects around the UK. These years of watching and learning eventually led to the conception of his own company.

Friend-James is personally involved at each stage of every project, from initial design meetings right through to when the purchaser moves in.

“At every point – design, order, manufacture, delivery, arranging subcontractors and installation – the customer can feel confident that my involvement is always in the fore with each project,” he says.

It is the personal involvement of Friend-James himself – with some 25 years of experience in the industry before setting up RKL – that he believes his customers really value.

“I like to make the customer feel important, whether they are a retail client or trade, one kitchen or 10,” he says. “I also wanted to be on hand over the phone rather than simply

hiding behind emails – that is so commonplace! I basically like to be seen on my sites; I want my clients to be able to approach me and have the confidence that the jobs are being run from the frontline back.”

His breadth of contacts also means he can supply anything that his much larger national-brand competitors can, with prices kept low due to his carefully controlled overheads. “Many companies like to bamboozle with huge savings. You could look up your local running club. They will have a Couch to 5k programmes to get you started which is quite often free and a great way to meet other people without any pressure on looking the best and being the fittest.

If you are a Mum with younger children. Get the buggy out and power walk around the park.

You can always stop at a bench and do 10 press ups, or just stop and tone your legs with some squats and lunges. You may well find the little one goes to sleep whilst you are busy!

How about a bit of a booty blast? Barre workouts are continuing to gain popularity with Hot Barre being introduced in New York doing ballet style moves in 40 degrees! But you don’t need a ballet barre at home, just find a strong chair that has a high back and do your workout ballet style and see that bottom perk up! Again these workouts can be found online through You Tube and fitness DVDs. I teach Barre Blast and it is the meanest workout on your derriere I think you can do and your bottom will without a doubt lift back up!

Your home can be a fantastic gym. Water bottles can act as dumb bells. Stairs and chairs can all be used to assist your body weight exercises and there are showers and refreshments available to hand and you don’t have to worry who has been using that mat!

Here is a great short Body Weight workout:

Warm up for 3–5 minutes by going up and down the stairs for a few minutes, or marching on the spot.

Forward lunges – stand feet about hip distance apart, take a big step forward and allow the front and back knee to bend, let the heel raise on the back leg. Push back from the heel of the front leg to bring you back to standing and change legs.

Aim for 10 each leg

alternate to start then try doing on one leg only for 10 then change. Great for toning those thighs.

• Squats – Stand with feet

about hip distance apart, bend your knees as though sitting into a chair as deep as you can manage without aggravating your knees, then stand back up firing up your thighs and bottom to bring you back to standing.

Aim for 20 squats and if you have the energy add 10 power squats with a jump. Legs and bottom will benefit from some squats, just watch you don’t arch your back as you bend at the knees, then hips, not

• Shoulder bridge – lay

on your back, have a mat if possible. Bend your knees, feet about hip distance apart. Lift your bottom straight up and feel your bottom working.

Aim for 20 hip lifts and if you want additional challenge try it with one leg lifted. This exercise will tone up that butt!

• Scissors – lay on back, put

a pillow under your head if your head needs support. Lift up your legs and then reach them

If you find it too much to have your legs straight start with them bent and do a toe tap to the floor. Ensure your lower back does not come off the floor. You might want to place your hands under your lower back and if you want more challenge you can raise your head, neck and shoulders whilst scissoring the legs Aim for 10 scissors and build on this up to 20. This exercise is great for stretching the hamstrings whilst working the abdominals.

Russian twist – sit on your bottom with feet down and knees bent. Keep the feet

down if you are new to exercise and if you have any back problems skip this exercise. Take your arms out in front of you and twist from one side to the other so you look from side to side. You want to feel your rib cage turning away from your hips.

Aim for 10 either side and as you progress, you could take

• Side plank with rotation – lay on your side,

For challenge, you can add a rotation reach the top arm under the waist. Ensure your elbow is under the shoulder so you are not feeling great

Aim to do the side plank 5 times on one side then change over – so lifting your hips holding for a moment and then lowering back down. If adding rotation, aim again 5 to start and build gradually.

– adopt plank position as shown. If you cannot keep legs extended, put knees down.

Winter Beer & Cider Festival

Get your souvenir pint glass at the ready. The exceedingly popular Chelmsford Winter Beer & Cider Festival, now in its 16th year, returned this week and will see thousands of visitors enjoying gallons of beer, perry and cider during the four-day-fest.

RGANISED and run by Chelmsford and Mid-Essex Campaign for Real Ale volunteers (CAMRA), which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, visitors can look forward to 200 real ales many of the stronger darker winter ales variety, ever popular gold beers to tantalise your tastebuds and also 50 scintillating varieties of ciders perries and pyders (Apples and Pears mixed) along with International Beers and local Essex wines. Eleven new ciders include three from Bertie’s Cider Company from

Braintree, Essex. The cider bar this year is sponsored by The Essex Cider shop.

Also toast of the four day event is the hearty grub courtesy of Hopleaf, who will be serving freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs, chips and homemade chillies and curries. There’s chocolates from Merry Berry and lite snacks from Pipers Crisps.

The first Winter festival was held in 1999, and until 2005 was held at various locations in Chelmsford including the Essex County Cricket Club. The event has grown steadily over the years and larger

premises were eventually secured in 2013 with King Edward VI Grammar School the chosen venue.

The festival runs at the school (Broomfield Road, Chelmsford CM1 3SX) until Saturday 21st February. Admission is free for CAMRA members at all times, and for non-members before 6pm. £3 thereafter.

40 Not Out beer

This unique brew has been especially made for the festival to celebrate the Chelmsford and MidEssex branch of the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) 40th Anniversary by the Felstar Brewery in Felsted. It has been made to commemorate the fact that the branch, founded in 1975, is still going strong with more than 1,660 members.

It has been made using 40 ingredients and will be available to buy at the festival direct from the cask and in bottles.

The chosen charity for this year’s festival is The Mental Health Foundation. A charity raffle with a variety of beer and cider related prizes including the opportunity to brew at Wibblers Brewery will be made at 4pm on Saturday 21st February by Phil Wilcox, Head Brewer at Wibblers. All the proceeds from the raffle will go to The Mental Health Foundation.

This year’s ‘monthly specials’ from the Maldon Brewing Company celebrate Maldon’s barges.

OME of the famous Thames sailing barges the Maldon Brewing Company are commemorating are still in operation, owned by Topsail Charters, the East Coast Sailing Trust and the Thames Sailing Barge Trust, all of whom are based in Maldon.

The barges now offer a variety of cruises and charter opportunities. Maldon and Heybridge Basin, and along the River Blackwater, are the best places to view these majestic boats January’s beer was ‘Thistle’ (we saved the very last barrel for the Chelmsford Beer Festival!) – a traditional dark brown mild, soft and beautifully mellowed in the cask. The barge Thistle is moored at Maldon and is currently being used as a tearoom by Topsail Charters. She is the oldest surviving iron barge, built in 1895 to carry coal from the Humber up to London.

is ‘Reminder’. This golden beer uses a hop from the USA which may well ‘remind’ you of tangerines! The barge was launched in 1929 and christened to “remind” her rivals of her great speed. She was champion barge in the races on both the Thames and the Medway.

Essex Book Fest ival 1 – 31 March 201 5

The Essex Book Festival is one of the highlights of Essex’s cultural calendar, says director of the festival Ros Green taking part in this year’s festival. Along with SJ Watson, author of Before I Sleep, BAFTA winner dramatist Nick Dear, and Nicci Gerrard, one half of the bestselling crimewriting duo ‘Nicci French’.

With so many enticing events on the Festival ‘menu’, it’s very difficult to single out individual events. Still, here are some highlights not to miss.

O celebrate the book in all its forms, Essex County Council established the Festival in 1999. It subsequently became an independent charity led by a board of voluntary trustees in 2011.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength, quickly emerging as one of the leading festivals of its kind in the East of England.

Each March it hosts over sixty events in a range of venues across the County.

These include theatres, libraries, schools and universities, through to cafes and art galleries.

Intriguingly, there’s even an event on Southend Pier this year!

Over the years the Festival has welcomed a formidable range of writers to the county, extending from Anita Shreve and Sandi Toksvig, through to Anthony Horowitz and Jack Straw.

2015 is no different.

Ingredients 3 tablespoons Olive Oil ¾ medium Onion chopped 1 medium red pepper diced 1 medium green pepper diced 3 small cloves garlic finely chopped/ pressed through garlic crusher 1 can (400g) Biona Org Chopped Tomatoes & Basil ¾ can (400g) organic red kidney beans ½ tbsp ground cumin ½ tbsp chilli powder 2 tbsp Biona Organic Tomato Puree ½ sachet chilli mix (41g) ½ teaspoon salt 1 pack tortilla chips ½ pack of Vegusto No-Moo Melty Cheese (semi-frozen for easier grating) 1 Pack Vegusto mince

I

LOVE cooking comfort foods that warm you up on a cold day but also those that don’t take too long to cook being a busy businesswoman and mum.

As a vegan I frequently buy products at health food stores, at vegan festivals and online of course. Swiss company Vegusto (www.vegusto. co.uk) are one of my all-time top favourites.

The Vegusto range (available from their website and independent health food stores) includes more than fifty products: dairy-free alternatives to cheese, vegan burgers, sausages, luncheon roll, sandwich slices, roasts and deli slices, schnitzel and salami made from wheat protein, vegan sauces and pates.

The No-Moo cheese alternatives range is free from soya, sugar, LDL (bad) cholesterol and palm oil, contains 50% less fat and only half of the calories found in the equivalent amount of dairy cheese making it an attractive option for people cutting down on dietary fat and calories.

Here’s two great recipes using these alternatives.

Method: 1. In a medium pot boil water (enough to cover pasta) and then add the Tagliatelle pasta.

2. In a large frying pan/wok heat up the margarine, add red onions and the Lyon-style square veggie slices.

3. Fry together to soften the onions.

4. Add the mushroom wedges and the stock cube mix and fry for about 1 minute over medium heat, adding a little salt to taste.

5. When pasta is al dente,

drain and add into the frying pan.

6. Pour into the Vegusto sauce and soya cream and mix well together allowing just enough time to become warm.

7. Add the parsley and serve immediately. Caution: overcooking will cause the cream sauce to lose its consistency.

8. Add ground black pepper and sprinkle some grated Vegusto No-Moo Piquant for that extra taste of cheese. Garnish with fresh parsley and oregano

The Brentwood Writers’ Circle celebrating 70 years in 2011 and the best of 1940s’ novelists were guests, including Margery Allingham, Ursula Bloom, and Ruby Ayres. In later years, Douglas Adams, Lena Kennedy, Martina Cole, Colin Dexter, Simon Brett and many other famous names came along.

Sadly, Elizabeth died in 1974, but in the preceding years managed to pen romantic novels from her bed at Highwood hospital.

One young journalist – Gyles Brandreth who worked for Woman magazine dubbed her “The Most

Romantic Person I know.”

Just a few years back, in 2011, this respected Circle with its 60 members, (pictured) celebrated its 70th anniversary. Members and guests all raised their glasses to the continuing success of this remarkable society, which, although created in the dark days of war, continues Elizabeth’s legacy of helping writers to realise their dream of seeing their work in print.

Three-cylinder petrol engine from Audi makes debut in A1 WEIGHING up the pros and cons of petrol and diesel power becomes a little harder for Audi A1 customers from today as a new superfrugal, 97g/km TFSI version of the three or five-door subcompact becomes available in the UK. Equipped with a new three-cylinder engine – the first petrol unit with this configuration ever to be installed in an Audi model – the latest A1 variant promises to bring 67mpg-plus economy, peppy performance and the premium hallmarks that distinguish every Audi.

effectively replaces the 89PS 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine available in the A1 since launch.

It can call on a healthy 160Nm of torque to propel the A1 1.0 TFSI with standard five-speed manual gearbox to 62mph from rest in 10.9 seconds, regardless of whether it is powering the three-door or five-door Sportback body style.

A seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission is also available, and with this installed the acceleration time is also unchanged in both versions. Top speed is 116mph in every case.

AVING a supermini is an important car in makers range.

The figures in this A-segment class of vehicle speak for themselves as more than 219,000 found homes to UK buyers in 2014.

Suzuki have just introduced the new Celerio, which they are dubbing as an A+ segment car and will replace both the Splash and Alto in the Japanese manufacturers line-up.

HE fixture at The Arena was a meeting of two sides vying for promotion, but the game took some considerable time to get going.

Joint-boss Adam Flanagan made two attacking changes to the team that beat Waltham Abbey last Saturday with Emmanuel Osei and Marcus Milner starting in place of Alex Akrofi and Tom Richardson respectively.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between for both sides, the Dereham left Brentwood with all three points after some slack defending allowed Bailey in to score the winner.

Essex girls playing in Dubai ESSEX’S youth team girls have jetted off for an exciting week-long trip to Dubai.

Thirteen players from teams at under-19 level and younger will compete for the ARCH Trophy at the Sport Arabia-run tournament.

They will be up against sides from Wales, UAE and

Loughborough MCC in a one-day format competition.

The girls have been fundraising for the trip with a quiz night, sponsored walk and a special dinner hosted

by Essex head coach Paul Grayson and star bowler Reece Topley.

Women and Girls Officer, Natalie Samaranayake, said:

“The girls have worked hard to fund the trip.We hope they do well in the competition and it will be a great experience for the team to go and play overseas against new opposition.”

SPORTING AWARD WINNERS HAVERING Sports Council held their annual Awards Presentation night, recently at Upminster Golf Club.

The highlight of the borough’s sporting year, it was held in the presence of The Mayor of Havering, Councillor Linda Trew and Members of Parliament Jon Cruddas (Dagenham & Rainham) and Dame Angela Watkinson (Hornchurch & Upminster). The function was sponsored by McDonalds Restaurants of Romford.

A large gathering were welcomed by Upminster Golf Club’s Men’s Captain Chris Pinder after which Cllr Trew delivered a speech praising the local sports scene.

Master of Ceremonies John Whitby then introduced winners and runners-up and eight categories as local dignitaries and sponsors’ representatives presented awards.

The home side were much more positive going forward in the second half but it took until the introduction of Akrofi to really threaten Andrew Wilton’s goal.

The on-loan striker dragged a shot narrowly wide in the 70th minute, moments before Christian Mbulu headed Rees’ corner just over the crossbar from five yards.

Brentwood remained the more dangerous of the two sides but a clinical finish eluded them and Dereham managed to hold onto their lead until the final whistle.

Flanagan said after the match: “It took us far too long to get going, had we started a bit

brighter it might have been a different game.

“There was a lot of endeavour and work rate in the second half but I felt the real issue for us was that we lacked a bit of quality.”

Regarding the goal, the joint-boss added: “I don’t think it was a very good goal to be honest, I thought we could have defended it better.

“It was a long cross into the box, we weren’t particularly tight on the forward and after that it ricocheted around and we didn’t clear it and it fell to their guy who tucked it in.”

Brentwood make the short journey to eighthplaced Aveley this Saturday.

Clarets waste chances as Maidenhead strike twice CHELMSFORD City were made to pay for failing to convert a plethora of chances in front of goal as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Maidenhead United.

The result was the Clarets second away defeat in a row following defeat to Concord Rangers in midweek, and their eighth defeat in their last 10 away trips in league and cup.

It was also the first time since November 17th that City had failed to score in a match, despite creating enough goal scoring chances to win three games.

Mark Hawkes made two changes to his starting line up with Jaanai Gordon returning to start in place of Leon Redwood and Harry Hickford replacing the suspended Mark Haines.

Chelmsford almost got off to the perfect start when on-loan Southend United midfielder, Jack Bridge struck a first time shot from the edge of the area which was well tipped over by Ashley Timms in the Maidenhead net.

But whilst Timms was excelling at one end, City’s custodian, Tom Lovelock had a moment to forget as the hosts took the lead in fortuitous circumstances.

The second half was more of the same from the visitors who were on numerous occasions getting into dangerous areas,

but were either too afraid to pull the trigger or, when they did, find a defender there to block their shots.

Ward was guilty early on of not pulling the trigger early enough after he wormed his way into the area early in the second period, and Bridge’s superb low cross seconds later was unfortunate not to find someone to tap it home.

Cheek flashed a shot harmlessly wide after reacting quickest to a blocked shot by sub, Sam Gregory and Gregory saw an even better opportunity on goal once again blocked moments later, with Soloman proving a difficult man to pass.

Despite the pressure, it wasn’t until over half way through the second period before Timms was tested again and having thwarted Bridge early in the first half, Timms was at it again doing well to parry another first time effort from Bridge.

But having missed chance after chance after chance, there was almost an inevitability about Maidenhead’s second coming with just over quarter of an hour left on the clock when Dave Tarpey doubled the home side’s lead.

Chelmsford failed to stage any sort of a comeback as the sucker-punch of the second goal had knocked the wind out of the sails of the visitors, with the home side recording their first league win since Boxing Day.

Key win slips away from Leopards in extra period

ATURDAY’S 80-75 loss at the hands of Kent Crusaders saw Youngblood’s Leopards’ side fail to hang on for a key win in a game where they never trailed in normal time.

With captain Albert Margai opening scoring the visitors blew into a 9-0 lead and an Ashby trey sent them into the first break with a 23-11 lead.

The home side narrowed that lead to 36-28 at half-time and 51-49 going into the fourth period, but the Big Cats still led 67-59 win four minutes of the game remaining.

But a timeout from the hosts sparked them into life and Leopards failed to trouble the scorers again in regulation time as Crusaders hit eight unanswered points to take the game into an extra period.

NETBALL & TRAMPOLINING

School teams through to the finals GREAT Baddow High School are counting down the days until Saturday 14th March, which is National Final Day for two very different school sports teams.

The under-16 girls’ netball squad of Rosie Osborn (team captain), Charlotte MacDavid, Alice Hobbs, Ella Overson, Alexis Stevens, Elona Woodford, Sian Potter, Charlotte Ellmore, Gabrielle Pearce, Lois Decloquement-Saunders, Lollie Wiffen became regional champions in the latest round of the National Schools Competition and will now compete in the National Netball Finals at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire.

The under-14 boys’ trampolining team qualified as runners-up from the regional round, with Adam Wells qualifying as winner of his individual group, putting them through to the National Trampoline Finals at Cocks More Wood Leisure Centre, Birmingham.

The National Schools Netball Competition is the biggest schools competition in the netball calendar, consisting of three age groups; U14, U16 and U19.

On Saturday 31st January the U16 netball team competed in the regional round of the National Netball competition at Hassenbrook

School. The team entered the competition as county winners and were unbeaten in all competitions.

They played six pool games and won them all which took them through to the semi final against Freeman College.

The team won this 10-5 meaning they played Greensward School in the final. This was a very closely fought game and Great Baddow came out on top winning 11-10 making them regional champions.

Not to be outdone, the U14 Boys Novice Trampoline Team, comprising of Marc Goss, Thomas Ellis, Blair Henderson and Josh Burdon competed in the zonal round of the National Trampoline Competition at Cambridge Sports Centre.

They were joined by Adam Wells who competed as an individual competitor in the U19 Elite Category Two. All competitors complete one compulsory routine, which is a set 10 bounce routine, and then complete a second voluntary routine.

All four finished in the top 10 in the team competition, with Blair Henderson achieving the highest mark of any team competitor.

After a long day of competition, they were delighted to be through to the national finals and will be training hard over the coming weeks to ensure that they deliver their best performance.

Mrs Jess Ferguson, Head of PE Faculty said: “We are very proud of the commitment of the teams in both of these disciplines. They have worked well and trained hard to achieve this result and we are all looking forward to 14th March.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Moulsham pupils to run for county MOULSHAM High School is enjoying unprecedented success in cross country this year as, for the first time, three of the school’s students, Rachel Broome, Emma Perks and Callum Charleston have been selected to represent Essex.

They will compete for the county in the English Schools Cross Country Championship final in Blackburn on 14th March.

The English Schools’ Athletic Association (ESAA) National Cross Country Championship is the most eagerly anticipated event of the winter for young athletes and brings together the best athletes in each county in England to compete for the honour of being the best in the country.

Entry to the event is by virtue of athletes being selected by county team managers to represent their county.

Year 10 pupil, Rachel Broome, earned automatic qualification by finishing 5th in the Inter Girls Essex School Championships.

Emma Perks, Year 11, finished 10th in the Essex Schools Championships, but then performed exceptionally well in the South of England Championships and the Southern Inter Counties competition to earn one of the two discretionary places in the national final.

Callum Charleston, Year 13, will be finishing his school career in the impressive position of having been picked to represent Essex in the Essex Schools Championships every year that he has been fit to compete (5 out of a possible 6) and has had a very strong season, finishing second in the Essex Championships and 20th in the South of England Championships.

With a third place finish in this year’s Essex Schools Championships, Callum automatically qualified for the national final.
