*ALIM ISLAND 02 53 660 S 147 03 862 E Manus/Admiralty Baluan Islanders are the traditional Owners. Group of islands and lagoons, uninhabited. SE side with steep drop off, excellent diving. NW side of islands can be accessed by zodiac into large lagoon where turtles can be seem along with reef fish. On land there is a large colony of seabirds. The island is often used for shelter by powered canoes travelling between Manus to Madang, frequently can remain for several weeks in rough weather, they survive on coconuts, fish and other seafood. *ALOTAU 10 19 097 S 150 27 112 E Milne Bay Alotau is located Eastern most part of the mainland. The original capital of New Guinea was Samarai, later it was moved to Alotau on the mainland which is now a thriving little township on the eastern side of Milne Bay. Alotau (Gurney) is served by Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG and occasional charters between Cairns and Alotau. Although a relatively small population, the Province covers a great area, mostly sea dotted by hundreds of amazing islands, coral reefs and is known for its magnificent snorkelling and diving. There are several hotels and lodges available, sightseeing tours and harbour cruises by arrangement. The main attractions remain the World War Memorials erected by the Australian War Graves Commission. Several live aboard dive boats are based in Alotau and the world famous Tawali Resort is located on the North Coast. The main attraction for people visiting Alotau is it’s connection with WW2 which was a key battle field made all the more famous for PT109 Captained by John F Kennedy and the Battle of Coral Sea. ALEXISHAFEN/ SEK 05 05 493 S 145 48 240 E Madang/Sek Harbour Original Catholic Mission Headquarters for the Catholic Church since German colonization. It was bombed during WW2 by Americans who also destroyed a spectacular cathedral Alexishafen today accommodates DWU clergy, SSPS sisters in the convent who operate a school, rural health centre. Nearby is St.Fidelis a Training College Seminary. There was an airstrip no longer in use where several Japanese aircraft remain, close by is an Agricultural School run by the Catholic Church. Alexishafen was named after the Russian Frigate “Alexis” in 1871. *ALI ISLAND 103 07 511 S 142 28 220 E West Sepik/Aitape Ali Island was the original place where the Divine Word Missionaries established their work in Papua New Guinea, later moving it to the mainland at Aitape where there is a large secondary school, rural hospital, airstrip and the township of Aitape. 3000 people were killed in a Tsunami at Sissano and the township has since moved inland. There is an unsealed road connection to Wewak. *AMPHLETTE ISLAND Milne Bay This group of islands are largely unchartered, but navigation is possible by utilising zodiac fitted with depth sounder or sonar. We have visited most of the islands aboard the Melanesian Discoverer and Kalibobo Spirit. The most popular was Sinata for cultural experience and Urasi for diving. Our last visit to Urasi our guests rated the diving at Urasi as the best in PNG. There is a channel clearly marked on most charts between Goodenough to the Trobriand Islands enabling vessels of up to 4m to navigate safely, this is an ideal way to reach the Trobriand Islands in SE season as the passage is well protected.

*BAGABAG 04 487 83 S 146 12 436 E Bagabag Islands is 32nm NE of Madang and 11nm east of Kar Kar Island. It has a population of around 3000 in 8 villages. The main villages are Bal????diluliuo 1, 2 & 3.

The most popular places to visit is Christmas and New Year’s Bay located on the SW where there are good anchorages but a word of warning, in the NW season, strong winds can tunnel into the bays causing anchors to drag on largely a sandy bottom. At Christmas Bay there is a long white sandy beach ideal for swimming and off the West and East points tereis excellent snorkelling. Diving is best on the outer reef which extends almost around the volcanic island. *BASAMUK 05 32 137 S 146 08 618 E Madang This port was originally a Lutheran Plantation established prior to WW2, it was acquired in 1995 to become converted to a Nickel Processing plant and finally taken over in 2005 by MCC and Ramu Nico, a large Chinese State Company to build the mine at Kurumbukari (KBK) construct a slurry pipe to Basamuk and the huge processing plant and wharf where the nickel concentrate is shipped to mainland China. Initially in construction stage there were more than 2000 Chinese but today this number has reduced to less than 500 Chinese and approx 2000 Papua New Guineans.

There has been concern over tailings been dumped into the sea but no specific evidence of damage to the environment which is being closely monitored. Todate the port has been closed to other commercial vessels and there is limited access to the processing site. The fall in nickel price has also taken its toll on the profitability of the project and the mine and processing plant is operating at less that 50% of its planned capacity. Any request to enter this harbour, or visit the processing plant should be made to MTS and this would be subject to final approval by Ramu-Nico. *BOISA & MANUM ISLAND 03 599 69 S 144 57 598 E Madang A rock formed by a crater adjacent to Manam Islands. Population of 750 made up of SDA’s and Catholics dependent on fishing, coconuts and gardens on the steep slopes of the rock and in a valet formed by a crater. The people welcome visitors, they are eager to show you their school, perform a “sing sing” and show their Garamut Drums. Diving and snorkelling available. Anchorage can be difficult, best for vessel to drift.

Manam Island had a population of 14,000, following the eruption in 1994 the island population was evacuated to care centres on the mainland. Due to difficulties experienced approximately 4000 returned to the Island and in 2017, a further eruption most returned to the mainland.

Despite the eruption, there are more than 2000 people on the volcanic island and a good anchorage available at Tabele. The glow of the volcano can frequently been seen along with earth tremors. A visit to the island is quite safe and rewarding. *BUKA 05 25 890 S 154 40 380 E Bougainville Buka Township is on Buka Island separated by a passage from the mainland which flows up to 6 knots. Access between Buka and North Bougainville is by banana boats and more recently a vehicle ferry.The Bougainville people are generally very handsome, blue black and genuinely friendly, being a matrimonial the women play a major role in their society. The culture of Bougainville is quite unique in the Pacific.

The Autonomous Region of Bougainville (formerly called North Solomon) now has Autonomy from PNG following a bloody conflict of 10 years over the issue of the Panguna Mine, environmental issues plus internal factions that have existed time immemorial on Bougainville.

During my political career, I was Minister for Provincial Affairs and Minister for Bougainville for 9 years during which time with the help of many others we established the Bougainville Peace Agreement which ultimately stopped the fighting but it will take many years for full reconciliation takes place. Tourists and cruise vessels are welcome throughout Bougainville.

The Autonomous Region of Bougainville wish to see the development of tourism as a means of restoring their economy.

D’ENTRECASTEAUX GROUP *BUDOYA/DEI DEI SPRINGS 09 44 430 S 150 51 127 E Milne Bay A small catholic mission station, health centre, school is maintained by the Catholic Mission in Alotau. They welcome visits by visitors and inspection of both the health centre and school can be arranged with advance notice.

Budoya is also the anchorage which enable passengers to visit Dei Dei hot springs and Salama where the United Church have a school health centre, schools and boat building yard. Due to its proximity to Dobu, larger ships often make an anchor and visit both places by zodiac. *DOBU ISLAND

Milne Bay

The home of Reo Fortune who wrote “Sorcerers’ of Dobu”. He as at one time married to Margaret Mead. Dobu was one of the first Methodist Mission stations built and the original church remains in use situated on a stretch of flat land adjacent to the Passage between Normandby and Fergusson Islands. There is a distinctive extinct volcanic cone in the centre of the Island which is used for gardens on the fertile soil. If you arrive on a Sunday, you would be welcome to attend a service, women on the right, men on the left, at other times it can be arranged for the choir to sing. *WAGIFA ISLAND 09 29 073 S 150 22 625 E Milne Bay Wagifa is a small islands off the SE side of Goodenough, one of the most mountainous islands in the world with peaks rising to 12,000’ Like most mountains in the ring of fire, Wagifa was is an extinct volcano with a relatively easy walk to the top which overlooks the Moresby Passage that separated Fergusson and Goodenough island.

Most people of Wagifa continue to dress in traditional attire you will see them meeting in a circle of stones singing and chanting local music. The houses are built in what appears to be a landscaped rock garden with pathways that wind from the shore to around 200’ Further around there is a second village worth visiting.

DOINI ISLAND cated 4nm east of Samarai with anchorages able to take mega ships and a wharf on the Island to take tenders. Doini has a small resort overlooking a white sandy beach with live reefs and magnificent sea life.

Doini has become a stop for the P&O. Limited cultural activities and sand flies galore along the beach.

DREGEHAFEN/ FINSCHAFEN 06 38 150 | 06 32 60 147 5 1 581 | 147 50 Dregehaven was originally used by the Germans where they established the Lutheran Church in PNG. It is a good harbour for vessels under 3000 tons with up to 4m draft. Whilst it is not a tourist location, the people encourage visits by ships and can perform cultural dances similar to the Siassi Islanders.

Finschafen was originally the capital of German New Guinea, it is also well known as the place where the Lutheran Mission was first established in New Guinea and a number of landmark buildings have been preserved as a memorial to the early German missionaries.

Finschafen has a small commercial centre with a small coastal wharf, an airstrip, high school.

There are some interesting places to visit including fresh water creeks, waterfalls, villages and cultural performances can be arranged with advance notice. *GORENDU VILLAGE 05 28 4853 S 145 49 7683 E Madang 1871 Nicholay Miklouho-Maclay arrived aboard the Vitiaz, a Russian Frigate for an extended stay to study the people during which time he was befriended by the people of Gorendu and Bongo Village, they built him a house with his two staff during which time he wrote a diary papers and etchings which when presented back in Russia he became famous. He returned again to Gorendu for second visit and when travelling through Sydney, met Margaret, the daughter of Prime Minister for NSW whom he married. The Melanesian Foundation has helped rekindle the memory of Maclay, a seawall was constructed around the

Memorial constructed in 1971 to mark the 100th Anniversary of his arrival, a pre-school was built and just recently, we received an email from Nicholay Micklouho-Maclay IV who intended to visit PNG in September 2017 with the purpose of meeting Tui and other descendants who assisted Maclay and possible, funding a new primary School, a Guest House and Fish project to assist the people economically. It is expected that this visit will create an interest for Russian and other tourists to visit Gorendu.

Gorendu is located at Garaguzzi Point, an ideal anchorage and MTS would be pleased to arrange a welcome to cruise ships and individual tourists. *JAYAPURA 02 33 570 S 140 43 065 E Indonesia Jayapura, formerly known as Hollandia before WW2 is the Capital of West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya). It has an excellent port and sightseeing to Lake Sentani, flights to Wamena where sing sings can be arranged with advance notice. The City is now well developed, modern department stores, hotels exist for the indigenous Papuan and immigrants from Java where Melanesian and Asian influence is noticeable. *KAVIENG 02 34 747 S 150 47 425 E New Ireland Kavieng is the Capital of the New Ireland Province, it is located at the eastern end of the mainland along the Nusa Passage. There is limited wharfage available. Sightseeing tours are available on the mainland and to the east, Nemus and many islands including the Tsio Group and New Hanover. Air Niugini operate daily flights to Rabaul and Port Moresby, there are several hotels, a dive resort and guest houses. The Malangan Culture is unique to Kavieng along with its distinctive masks and carvings. *KIETA/ARAWA 06 13 009 S 155 38 464 Bougainville Kieta was originally the main port on Bougainville which was largely destroyed along with the township of Arawa during the conflict that took place over a 10 year period. The conflict was over the Panguna Mine which at the time was the largest copper mine in the world and represented 39% of the economy of Papua New Guinea. The local landowners led by Francis Ona forcefully closed the mine by destroying property which included all the Government buildings, schools, houses, electricity supplies and the people of Bougainville claim that more than 10,000 lives were lost in fighting the PNG Army. This conflict has created major divisions within Bougainville and on the mainland. Arawa was originally the capital of Bougainville and the infrastructure was the best in the Pacific Island Region. Slowly as peace was restored, the people are rebuilding their lives, reconciliation continues to take place and there is a move now to re-open the Panguna mine as they need the revenue to support their Autonomous Government and perhaps independence in the future. A recent movie was made by New Zealanders called “Mr Pip” who was a school teacher, teaching new Kieta during the conflict.

The Kieta wharf has now re-opened, it is a declared port and ships can be cleared inwards and outwards. There is a local company undertaking sightseeing tours of Central Bougainville, cultural performances and visits to the defunct Panguna Mine can be arranged with advance notice. *KOPAR & SEPIK RIVER 04 01 199 S 144 39 544E ESP/Sepik Kopar Village is located at the mouth of the Sepik River. The entrance to the Sepik River can be navigated with caution using tenders with depth sounder to check the channel. Small ships can navigated the Sepik River to Angoram, larger ships anchor off the entrance in around 36-80m and use tenders to transfer passengers ashore. The village has a population of around 600 but this incrteases dramatically attracting people from the Murik Lakes who visit Kopar to sell their carvings to passengers.

There are substantial cultural displays that can be arranged for visitors, carvings can be purchased at reasonable costs which are amongst the best in developing countries.

Visits to villages in the Murik Lakes, lower and middle Sepik River include Bien, Tawar, Angoram, Kambaramba, Moin, Tambanum, Timbunke, Kamindimbit, Chambri Lakes, Kanganaman, Parrembei, Malangai, Yetchen & Korogo and further in the upper Sepik to Malu, Amunti, Kupain and many more that can only be visited by the Kalibobo Spirit, banana boats and canoes. Ships visiting Kopar should take aboard an MTS staff to book and plan and coordinate the activities in their remote location of PNG. *KOKOPO (Rabaul) 04 20 170 S 152 19 769 E ENB Kokopo was the base of the Catholic Church at Vunapope, they operate the major hospital, schools including a teachers College and nursing school operated by DWU. It was also home for Queen Emma a famous plantation owner who lived in a palatial residence at Ralum. Since the eruption in Rabaul in 1994, Kokopo became the capital of East New Britain, it is the administrative headquarters of East New Britain and most larger companies along with the population have resettled nearby Kokopo. At Bitapaka. The first engagement of Australians took place whilst capturing the radio station, then in WW2 Rabaul and Kokopo was captured by the Japanese who dug tunnels to hide barges, hospitals and the administration head quarters of the Japanese Imperial Forces under Admiral Yamamoto who was killed in his aircraft in South Bougainville.

Attractions to Rabaul and Kokopo include the Baining Fire Dance only performed in the evening, visits to WW2 relics, tunnels and villages who perform various dances with advance notice. The Duke of York Islands can be visited by boat as well as many schools, churches and the Vunapope Hospital. Kokopo is located near Tokua Airport with several flights to and from Port Moresby and other airports. There are a number of good hotels and guest houses.

The main wharf remains in Simpson Harbour in Rabaul which is a perfectly protected harbour.

and present production is 10,000 litres per day, but this could be expanded to become a major producer of bio-diesel for PNG replacing fossil fuels The main wharf is located in the centre of the township within walking distance od supermarkets, banks and the post office.

The Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village are located within 15 minute walk from the main wharf. Both resorts offer five star accommodation in 200 rooms and cottages along the waterfront. Facilities include dive shop, marina, gift shop, artefact carvings, tennis court, 2 lagoons, 4 pools, 2 lagoons in 15 acres of landscaped gardens. Passengers from cruise ships are welcome to use the facilities and a courtesy shuttle bus is provided during cruise ship visits. The airport is served by Air Niugini & Airlines of PNG with several daily flights to Port Moresby and other destinations within PNG. MTS is also located at the Madang Resort who are ships agents and excursion operators that provide services throughout PNG. Madang is centrally located and provides access to the Highlands, the Sepik River and Islands enabling day excursions utilising aircraft and ground transportation. Attractions in Madang include a visit to the Haus Tambuna (Museum), Divine Word University, Villages where you can see demonstrations of pottery making, traditional dancers, bird life and on special occasions festivals that provide a kaleidoscope of colour and cultures performed at the Sagen Aben adjacent to the Madang Resort and Marina with optional traditional mumu (feast). Bamboo bands provide an island style rhythmic welcome.

*LONG & CROWN ISLAND 05 16 577 S 147 10 952 E Madang Long Island is unique, in as much as it has Lake Wisdom. A fresh water lake in a volcanic crater 500m ASL and in the centre there is an active volcano with vents releasing steam. To gain a view of the lake you need a helicopter or the ability to climb over the crater and down to the lake which can take most of the day. The most ideal access is from Malala where a constant stream of fresh water gushes down to the coast providing an ideal place to refresh in the cold clear water. Long Island has long been ignored by successive governments, they lack health and education, their only income is derived from coconuts (copra) and fishing. The population are dependent on good weather as it is located 80nm easter from Madang and 30nm North of Saidor. The MTS foundation was instrumental in building the Health Centre at Matafun, aid posts at Pt Kiau and Bok. The people welcome visitors and can perform colourful “sing sings” – the best location is to anchor off Malala on the NE where there is a good deep anchorage and access to the village.

New Ireland Morobe

MADANG 05 12 236 S 145 47 781 E Madang Madang is the Headquarters of the Madang province (shares the same name as the township of Madang)with a total population of approx 500,000. The name Madang is shared both by the township and the Province. Madang Province has more than 173 languages making it the most cultural diverse province in PNG and perhaps the world. The Province covers 200 nm of coastline along the North Coast of PNG between the Morobe and East Sepik Province and the Eastern Highlands, Simbu and Western Highlands all located in the Highands of PNG. Mt Wilhelm is the Highest Mountain peak in PNG at 15,400’ on the border of Madang/Simbu Province, the Ramu Valley and river separates the main Bismarck Range with the Finnisterre and Adelbert Mountain with a narrow coastal plain along the North Coast. Offshore islands include Boisa, Manam (active volcano), Kar Kar, Bagabag, Crown and Long Island. A further 20 odd islands are located within the Madang Lagoon which hosts an abundance of sea life that has been researched over the past 50 years and most recently by 80 international scientists from Europe in 2011.

The economy of Madang is basically agricultural which include copra and cocoa with some arabica coffee on the mountain slopes. There is a large fish cannery based at Sek Harbour which exports tuna to Europe, a timber industry which regretfully is allowed to export valuable hardwoods logs like kwila. Most recently a Nickel Mine established at Kurumbikari with a processing plant at Basumuk by Ramu Nico, a Chinese company. A large copper mine is expected to be developed in the near future near Yanderra by Marengo on the slopes of Mt Wilhelm. Of interest is a bio-diesel plant has been established on Kar Kar Island using copra

MARSHALL BENNETT GROUP Egum Atoll (Yaneba) 09 15 802 S 151 53 504 E Milne Bay The Melanesian Discoverer was the first to visit Egum back in the mid 60’s. Since then we have retained an excellent relationship with the people partly funding their school, providing school desks. There are two main villages, Yaneba and Egum which is on the eastern side of the lagoon/ A total population of approximately 300. At Yaneba facing the lagoon there are many Kula canoes beached and depending on the season it is relatively easy for them to organise sailing. You will see kids handle micro canoes, smaller canoes can be regularly seen sailing across the lagoon. The passage into the lagoon is restricted to max of 3m and it can be rough in strong SE trade winds, the bottom of the lagoon is sand with bobbins. Larger vessels can anchor in the lee on the western side of the island and you can walk through to Yaneba via the school along limestone paths that are sharp requiring sneakers. Yaneba is a highlight of a visit to the Marshall Bennett Group.. *Gawa Island 08 57 385 S 151 57 294 E Milne Bay Similar to Iwa, excellent white sandy beaches, all villages in the centre of the island and access by a walk up 100m limestone cliff. In the village, people can perform cultural events, dancing, singing and along the tracks you will see yam gardens. A similar culture to the Trobriand islands with some carvings and handicraft available. Reasonably good anchorage off the NW corner in SE Season Kaiwatta Island 08 54 942 S 15154 942 E Milne Bay Population of around 400 access from the beach to the villages in the centre of the island is up a 100m limestone cliff but worth the experience. Excellent diving, snorkelling and white sand beaches. *Iwa Island 08 42 196 S 151 40 511 E Milne Bay Jean Micheal-Costeau described diving around Iwa as the best he had ever experienced.

Caves, drop offs, coral reef and abundance of sea life. Steep walk into village located in the centre of the island but well worth the effort. Fresh water is obtained from caves and carried up to the villages on the heads of the women. Sandy beach, white sand and excellent snorkelling available. t

Quark Rock (ISLET) 09 12 479 S 151 55 334 E Milne Bay Breeding ground for thousands of sea birds, eagles, whispering kites, albatross and turns.

Deep drop offs. Sharks, superb untouched reef and an abundance of sea life. Anchorage is difficult in anything other than perfectly calm seas. A stop at Quark Rock can only be viewed from the ship as anchorage is not possible.

*PORT MORESBY 09 29 389 S 107 12 751 E NCD Port Moresby is the Capital of Papua New Guinea with a population of around 500,000. It was formerly a quiet Motuan Region until the British flag was raised declaring Papua to be apart of the British Empire administered by Australia. Later it became the Capital of Papua and New Guinea, then Papua New Guinea (PNG) and in 1975 received its Independence from Australia. It is one of the few democracies in the world that has enjoyed a peaceful transition and whilst there are some crime and corruption it is mainly restricted to certain regions caused by extremely low employment, exceptionally high population growth of around 3.8%. The total population of PNG is 7.8m and estimated to be 26m by 2050 so you can see the massive challenges PNG faces.

Port Moresby attracts people from all over PNG seeking education and opportunities, there are acute shortages of accommodation and many of the migrant population live in squatter settlements.

The main wharf is near the City Centre where banks, post office, department stores are all within walking distance. The commercial and government are located around Waigani a distance of 8kms.

The International Airport is 15kms from the main wharf along a busy freeway. Parliament House is located at Waigani where 110 Members of Parliament meet from the 22 Provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Points of touristic interest include the National Parliament, National Museum, the Botanical Gardens and Wild life Park at the University, nearby Motuan Villages and artefact shops.

Port Moresby has a number of major hotels including the Grand Papua Ela Beach Hotel, Gateway, Holiday Inn, Airways and many smaller hotels. Immigration, customs, NAQIA are all based in Port Moresby. *RABAUL/Kokopo 04 15 863 S 152 11 250 E ENB Prior to WW1 Rabaul was the Capital of German New Guinea and had flourishing copra plantations which was the main economy. A notable planter was Emma Coe who was given the title of Queen Emma and a number of books have been written about her business and personal life where she lived in a palatial house which was described as a Palace, the steps of her ‘palace’ can be seen today just beside the Ralum Club Golf Course at Kokopo. In 1937, the volcanoes erupted and then the Japanese invaded Rabaul in 1942 and remained there until the close of WW2. They built a myriad of tunnels housing barges, their headquarters, hospital but were finally captured by the allies. In 1994, the volcanoes erupted again and the Government made a decision to relocate the administrative headquarters to Kokopo, build a new Airport (Tokua) and since then Kokopo has continued to expand and serves as the regional township for the islands region, it is the headquarters of East New Britain Province.

Rabaul township still functions as a commercial centre, the wharves are still open but are subjected to ash from the volcanoes during the NW season which on occasions has forced the closure of the Rabaul (Tokua) airport.

Most of the larger vessels still dock at the old Rabaul wharves whilst the smaller vessels anchor off Kokopo and go ashore by tender to the Rapopo Plantation Hotel which is situated just 5 kms from the airport. The main attractions in East New Britain are the volcanoes, the native markets, the Rabaul Volcanic Observatory, Japanese Tunnels and Tolai Villages. Off shore there are the Duke of York islands. The culture of the Tolai people is very interesting and the Bainings, the original habitants of Rabaul perform a spectacular fires dance which can be arranged with advance notice, Tuam Island 06 00 733 S 147 55 004 E Tuam Island is located in the Siassi Group. It is one of many islands n the Siassi Group that have become a popular place to visit with exciting sing sings, as well as places to snorkel and dive. *LABASIA/Salamaua 07 18 000 S 147 08 000 E Morobe Labasia is a village of approx 750 people in a sandy cover. The attraction here is the 9,000 hectare Kukiali Wildlife Management Area. The area comprises of forests, mangroves, coral reefs, waterfalls, rivers & lakes and includes the steep Dai Suzuki Trail through some pristine forests, During the season the beaches are used at night by the leatherback turtles, Labasia is only accessible by boat from Salamaua approx 1 hours travel. now a popular place by residents to spend leisure time, fishing and diving.

Salamaua was one of the first townships established on the mainland of New Guinea. It played an important role in the development of Wau and Bulolo during the gold rush and is now a popular place by residents to spend leisure time, fishing and diving *SAMARAI 10 36 616 S 150 39 475 E Milne Bay Historic Samarai is located in the China Straits. It was once the major port in New Guinea until it was relocated to Alotau on the Mainland in Milne Bay. Although a very small island it was the major trading post in Milne Bay. It has a wharf for up to 50m, ex colonial houses, churches and schools. The children can perform interesting dancers and there is normally a lot of artifacts and handicraft available TAMI ISLAND 06 45 736 S 147 53 908 E Morobe Tami Islands are located 3nm from Finschafen in the Morobe Province in the Vitiaz Straits.

They are made up of Tami and Wanam Islands which are divided by a sandy lagoon. On Tami island they are famous for making wooden bowls which is their main trading item apart from fish where a small scale fishery project has been established. The Tami Islands is a well known spot for game fishing from Lae and plae for relaxation in a locally owned guest house.

The Tami trading canoes have largely been replaced by banana boats but occasionally they build a canoe with beautifully caved splash boards.

Anchorages are off the Western side of the Island and there is a large reef that covers the SE ideal for snorkelling and diving. *TUFI 09 05 009 S 149 19 002 E Oro Tufi is in the Oro Province between Morobe and Milne Bay and Central to the south. It is located 20nm from Mt Lamington which erupted violently in 1937 killing 3000 people. The area has many fiords which extend up to 3 nm inland. Tufi is well known for its diving, culture and fishing as the entire sea is scattered with coral reefs. At Tufi station, there is a good Tourist Lodge and they can arrange sightseeing and cruises of the Fiord lands as well as cultural entertainment where you will see the traditional dress made os Tapa Cloth.

TROBRIAND ISLANDS A visit to the Trobriand Islands is essential for any cruise vessel or visitor. Often referred to the “Island of Love” and well documented by Malinowski and other anthropologist who have spent many years observing the unique customs and culture. Each Island has its uniqueness, Kitava is simply beautiful and as everyone’s dream of a South Sea Island, lovely people, well kept villages, vibrant cultures, unique architecture not unlike the culture of Yap in Micronesia where stone money can be seen which could be a historic link. Throughout the Trobriands they are magnificent craftsman using the valuable ebony making masks, figures, fish, bowls, animals, fish, walking sticks to the extent ebony is becoming scarce.

In most villages in the Trobriand Group both the women and men have well choreographed dancing with legends told of their origin, The men and women go to great lengths to dress in their traditional attire and it is impressive to see both the adults and children willing to dance (for a price) that passengers will remember for a long time, unlike many dancers on the mainland, it is not monotonous or repetitive. A highlight of any visit to the Trobriand Islands is to witness a game of Trobriand style cricket which is far more entertaining that the game played at Lords or the Sydney Cricket Ground. Swimming on sandy beaches, snorkelling on live reefs and diving is excellent in all islands in the Trobriand Group. *KAIBOLA VILLAGE/Kiriwina 08 22 984 S 151 05470 E Milne Bay Kaibola is located on the north western tip of Kiriwina Island, again a new wharf has been built to provide for tenders off the larger cruise ships, but smaller ships may prefer just to use their tenders through narrow passages in the coral reef onto the sandy beach which is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The Kaibola Primary School is located just beside the beach and it is here where the craftsmen will attempt to sell you their wares, in some cases a little aggressively and ask top bucks. Attempts are being made to make them less aggressive, but with a population of 30,000 and little other economy it becomes a challenge for them to raise

to pay school project fees and other expenses as the Islands move into the 21st Century. In most cases, prices will become more realistically but it is advisable to warn your passengers of their aggressiveness and allow some time before making counter offers. We have found that in most cases the people will accept approximately half of what they ask. Kaibola Village is a short walk down a road and the visit to the village is a worthwhile experience, you may be lucky enough to see grass skirts being made from pandana leaves or other handicraft produced by the women. *KITAVA ISLAND (Nurata Is) 08 37 100 S 151 18 326 E Milne Bay This is one of the most popular islands to visit in the Trobriand Islands, the anchorage is between Urata Island and Kitava, the passage is crystal clear aqua blue. There is now a wharf that has been built to service tenders from the larger ships. At the time of writing there is a dispute between landowners but it is expected that this will be resolved in the near future.

After going ashore, there is a pathway to the Kitava Primary School and you are welcome to visit, it is also an ideal place where cultural entertainment can be arranged providing school in session. The village of Kumwagea Is beautifully aid out with Yam Houses located throughout the village, the next village is Lalela which is more traditional. For passengers wishing to walk right around the Island it can be done easily in one day, but you should take something to eat and be prepared to make frequent stops as the full round the island walk can be strenuous and quite hot. Between each of the villages you will walk through the Yam Gardens, the staple diet throughout the Trobriands. A fitting end to a visit to Kitava is a swim at Nurata Island and a BBQ dinner with entertainment by the young people dressed in traditional dress dancing Trobriand Style, you can expect the passengers will be asked to participate!

KUYAWA ISLAND 08 34 740 S 150 51 408 E Milne Bay Kuyawa like many names in islands of PNG are spelt in different ways. Kuyawa is a relatively small island with a Primary School partly funded by the Melanesian Foundation. Like most villages there are many houses crowded together, yam houses, gardens and being an island not often visited the people welcome visitors. There are craftsmen and women anxious to sell excellent carvings and handicraft including grass skirts. Crayfish can be caught by the young people with advance notice. we are always eager to buy crayfish which can be fund in abundance off nearby islands. *TSOI ISLAND 02 239 31 S 150 22 743 E NI Tsio Islands are a series of islands east of Kavieng, including Liklik Tsoi a sandy island and lagoon which provide cruise ships and motor yachts a good safe harbour and the opportunity to visit idyllic villages to meet the people, swim, snorkel and dive. *VANIMO 02 40 615 S 141 17 259 E Sundaun Vanimo is the located on north coast and is the Western most port in PNG and headquarters of the West Sepik Province and shares a road link via Watung to Jayapura in Indonesia. The wharf is located in a crater with excellent protection. Cultural entertainment is available with advance notice including the tribes from Telefomin who wear Penis Gourds. Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG operate daily air services to Wewak, Madang, Lae & Port Moresby. There are several hotels and guest houses. Vanimo have customs, immigration, NAQIA officials based at Vanimo.

WEWAK 03 33 928 S 143 4 0 415 E East Sepik Wewak is located on the North Coast between Madang & Vanimo, it is the capital of East Sepik Province with a population of an estimated 450,000 or which 80,000 reside along the Sepik River one of the major rivers of the world, rich in culture art, traditional culture. Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG operate scheduled air services between Vanimo, Madang, Lae and Port Moresby. There is an overseas wharf but most ships anchor and use tenders to carry passengers ashore. There is a small ships wharf ideal for ships tenders. Several hotels are located in Wewak and some guest houses available in Maprik, Ambunti, Timbunke and Angoram. The main attraction to the Sepik is the Sepik River which is 1200km long. There are many villages of immense interest along the river which are accessible by boat or roads to Angoram and Pagwi. The “Kalibobo Spirit” operates scheduled an charter expeditionary cruises, a new vessel is being planned at present to operate Lower, Middle (Iatmul) and

WITU GROUP 04 41 4341 S 149 29 207 E WNB Gorova & Bali Islands Gorova is an amazing island, it is a giant volcanic island with a crater large enough to accommodate mega ships. In WW2 it was used by the Japanese and Allies to take cover and even today provides a refuge from adverse weather in a perfect protected harbour. Just inside the entrance on the Southern side with health, school and historic church in a Catholic Mission dating back to German colonisation. On the Northern side, Peters-haven provides yet another smaller harbour with a wharf, access to fresh water and a major copra plantation established by the Germans. There are numerous villages around Gorova and an airstrip.

The smaller islands to the West are mostly habited and provide world class diving and very friendly people. (On a recent visit at night, whilst at anchor at Gorova, we saw what appeared to be a number of box jelly fish that were attracted by the lights of the ship, yet during the day our guests had been swimming around the vessel).

The culture of Witu is unique, they have dances similar to Siassi, but in addition have ‘bogie men’ and some evidence of ‘duk duk’ culture from East and West New Britain.

Bali Island has again a large Catholic Mission with schools and health centre. There is a hill that can be reached by walking or tractor where stones can be seen with magical powers that feed numerous legends. Like Garova, there are large ex German copra plantations and fertile valleys which provide an abundance of food from the fertile volcanic soil.

IMMIGRATION Tourists are provided free tourist visas on arrival in Port Moresby. The current regulations and fees are currently under review. Tourist Visas are issued to most western countries. Check with MTS for other countries pngimmigration.gov.pg.

CUSTOMS All vessels arriving in PNG must be cleared by designated Customs ports of Port Moresby, Lae, Alotau, Oro, Lae, Kimbe, Rabaul, Madang, Wewak, Vanimo, Kavieng, Lorengau.

Customs have the right to inspect vessels, charge all fuel, food and liquor used within PNG waters. No goods, food, liquor are allowed to be bought ashore without customs clearance.

QUARANTINE All vessels are subject to NAQIA requirements and inspected at a designated port on arrival in PNG. No food, liquor of goods, animals, birds and permitted ashore and have a health clearance certificate available for inspection NMSA All commercial vessels but be in compliant with international safer regulations and most vessels will be required to pay navigation fee in PNG waters.

MADANG This book has been deliberately produced to show what Madang has to offer in the way of natural beauty, diversity of geography along with the diversity of cultures.

Madang’s population is made up of more than 173 languages each with its own culture. The geography ranges from the highest Mountains in PNG at 15,000’ through the wide and fertile Ramu River and Valley to the coastal ranges of Finnisterres (12,000’) and Abelbert (5000’) down to the coastal plains which provide idyllic ports, villages, rivers which stretch from Saidor to the Sepik River.

Not only does Madang have the diversity of culture, it is located centrally between the Highlands, Sepik, Morobe and the Islands all of whom consider Madang the most beautiful Province in PNG. Madang is primarily an education centre and home of the Divine Word University, St Fidelis Seminary, PNG Institute of Medical Research, Madang Teachers College, PNG Maritime College, Madang Technical School, Lutheran School of nursing along with numerous high and primary schools.

Students from all over PNG attend these educational facilities and bring with them their cultures which are shared with visitors during the Madang Festival, Bium Festival, Kalam and DWU cultural day.

MTS has successfully staged mini-shows considering of over 20 cultural groups to perform at the Sagen Aben Park adjacent to the Madang Resort. Many of the pictures of the culture are featured in this book.

Other reasons to seriously consider Madang is the proximity to the Highlands where MTS operate day charters to Goroka & Mt Hagen utilising Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG F100 and ATR72 type aircraft to enable sightseeing to be operated into the Highlands.

Helicopters are also available from Madang to charter to the more remote areas of Madang, the Sepik and Highlands.

Madang Educational Tour 3 hours Visit the Madang Cultural Centre and inspect the Museum. followed by a visit to the Divine Word University, inspect the campus, the library and a faculty of choice. Make a further stop at the Lutheran School of Nursing, the Pathology Unit at Modilon Hospital operated

by DWU and finally Tusbab High School.

Madang Cruise - 3 hours Leave the wharf by coach, drive to the Madang Resort Marina, board the Kalibobo Spirit or another of MTS vessels for a cruise within the beautiful Madang Harbour making a stop at either Pig or Wangat island where you can enjoy a swim or snorkel before returning to the Marina where you can inspect the levy grounds of the Resort or enjoy a meal in the Haus Win Restaurant.

Madang Mini Show - 3 hours (1130-1530) This is a highlight of any visit to Madang. MTS can arrange a cultural show to include scores of cultural groups representing most provinces to perform dances, songs and dramas at Sagen Aben Park adjacent to the Madang Resort Hotel. You will see more cultural diversity in 2 hours than you would anywhere else in the world. This event has to be arranged well in advance and it needs at least 100 passengers to be a success. Pictures of these Mini Shows are featured in this book, The Madang resort can also arrange for a “mumu” and tropical feast to be served to passengers during or after the cultural show. Refreshments will be made available and a marquee with seating would be made available to passengers, Highlands Tour - 6 hours Depart Madang by air, fly to Goroka, board coach for tour of township stopping at a coffee factory, then through the Asaro Valley to Makehuku Village to see the unique “mud men” perform their ghostly ritual, return to lunch at the Bird of Paradise Hotel, maybe witness a highland sing sing before returning via air to Madang.
