EDITO Chers lecteurs, nous sommes actuellement confrontés à d'énormes défis. Se remettre de cette pandémie sera long et douloureux; nous devrons changer nos habitudes et nous allons probablement apprendre de nouvelles façons d'interagir les uns avec les autres. Néanmoins, je suis convaincu que nous resterons suffisamment curieux pour découvrir de nouveaux endroits et rencontrer de nouvelles personnes. À terme, nous serons encore plus disposés à le faire, afin de nous assurer définitivement que le confinement était une mesure provisoire face à une situation exceptionnelle. Notre comportement sera la preuve que le monde entier est déterminé à contrer la propagation de ce virus, afin que nous puissions nous en sortir plus forts et plus confiants.

Je suis Ambassadeur de Suisse pour les Émirats arabes unis et le Bahreïn depuis peu, étant arrivé à Abu Dhabi il y a seulement sept mois environ. Ma mission jusqu'à présent, malgré toutes les restrictions de ces dernières semaines, a été extraordinaire en démontrant à maintes reprises les multiples facettes de nos relations avec cette région. Je ne cesse d'être étonné par les nombreuses choses que nous avons en commun, que ce soit dans nos systèmes politiques et économiques ou en ce qui concerne nos cultures et traditions. Il est maintenant de mon devoir de développer cette base solide, afin de continuer à forger un avenir commun pour les générations à venir.

Dans ce sens, je vous invite, chers lecteurs, à regarder vers l'avenir en restant optimistes. Bientôt, nous pourrons à nouveau profiter de la vie ensemble et la Suisse vous accueillera avec la beauté de nos paysages et le cœur ouvert de nos citoyens!

Dear readers, we are currently confronted with enormous challenges. Recovering from this pandemic will be long and painful; we will have to change our habits and we are probably going to learn new ways of interacting amongst each other. Nevertheless, I am confident that we will remain curious enough to discover new places and meet new people. Eventually, we will be even more inclined to do so, in order to definitively demonstrate to ourselves that the lockdown was a temporary measure in the face of an exceptional situation. Our behavior will be proof that mankind is determined to beat the spread of this virus, so that we can wake up stronger and more optimistic.

I am fairly new in my posting as Ambassador of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain, having arrived to Abu Dhabi only about 7 months ago. The journey so far, and in spite of all the restrictions of the recent times, has been extraordinary in that it has shown to me time and time again how multifaceted our relationship with this region is. I never cease to be amazed by the numerous things that we have in common, be it in our political and economic systems or with regard to our cultures and traditions. It is now my duty to continue to build on this strong foundation and help shape a common future for the generations to come.

In this sense, I call on you, dear readers, to look ahead and remain hopeful. Soon we will once again be able to enjoy life together and Switzerland will welcome you with the beauty of our landscapes and the open heart of our people!

SHOES MADE OF PLASTIC BAGS Thaely (plastic bags in Hindi), a company created by Ashay Bhave - 21 years old and former student of the Amity University of Dubai - has launched an ethical sports shoe which only uses components recycled from waste materials. The leather-like fabric is made according to standard techniques and does not use any additional chemicals. Each pair requires a total of 15 bags and 22 plastic bottles.

Ashay Bhave received the Eureka Startup award from Amity University for his work. Together with his partner Matteo Boffa - a Swiss social entrepreneur who has decided to radically change his life, stepping out of the comfort of a career in finance to fully immerse himself in the world of sustainable development - they are ready to launch their first production of sneakers, and will soon take orders.

L’idée d’un musée dédié à Charlie Chaplin et à son œuvre est née d’une rencontre en 2000 entre Philippe Meylan, architecte local aux liens établis de longue date avec la famille Chaplin, et Yves Durand - un muséographe québécois passionné de cinéma et de Chaplin.

Grâce aux nombreux documents d’archives et photos, nous pouvons reconstituer la vie de «Chaplin, résident suisse», au Manoir, ses relations avec la communauté voisine, ses voyages dans son pays d’accueil, sa vision de la Suisse et enfin le souvenir qu’il a laissé.

During the tour, visitors learn about Chaplin’s family life and gain insight into the reasons that led him to Switzerland, how he was welcomed, how he lived with his family during the last 25 years of his life. In the dining room, visitors learn about the family’s daily life, including culinary traditions and the parties and many celebrity guests invited into the home. The living room provides a backdrop for the many events that took place at the Manoir and the importance of music.

Thanks to the many archival documents and photos, we can piece together the life of “Chaplin, Swiss resident”, his life at the Manoir, his relations with the neighbouring community, his travels in his host country, his view of Switzerland and finally, the memory that he left behind.

Il a participé à pas moins de 81 films qu’il a écrits, produits et, pour la plupart desquels il a composé les partitions originales.

Chaplin a été fait Commandeur de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur par le gouvernement français et Chevalier Commandant de l’Empire britannique par la Reine Elizabeth II en 1975. À ce jour, Charlie Chaplin détient le record de la plus longue standing ovation lors d’une cérémonie des Oscars (12 minutes).

With 300 coins displayed from all across the Arabian Gulf, Asia, North Africa, and Europe regions “Coins of Islam: History Revealed” narrates the history of coins, based on the timeline of minting across various cultures and eras, and in light of the events and facts associated with the minting of the coins. Besides, the exhibition ref lects on the engraved images of revered historical figures, or other imagery that depict inhabitants and cultures and further highlights the commonalities and human connections with the communities of these cultures within the setting of Islam and its teachings.

An entire section has been dedicated to highlighting women’s prominent presence and significant imprint on the world’s cultures, in developing societies and building cultures. This section showcases a selection of carved coins engraved with images of exceptional women who left their mark on history.

Madame Magazine - D’où vous vient votre passion pour les pièces de monnaie?

Alain Baron - C’est un choc émotionnel que j’ai eu à l’âge de 5 ans alors que je me promenais avec mon père dans une petite ville de Suisse. J’ai vu une pièce ancienne suisse de deux francs de 1886 dans une vitrine. Constatant mon intérêt, mon père me l’a achetée et ce fut le début d’une passion qui ne m’a jamais lâché.

Cette pièce est d’ailleurs restée mon sou fétiche comme pour l’oncle Picsou.

MM - Que rêviez-vous de devenir quand vous étiez petit?

AB - Numismate et je n’ai jamais eu d’autre souhait.

MM - Dans votre exposition les visiteurs vont redécouvrir les pièces perdues de l’Islam, que vont-ils y trouver d’autre?

AB - Ils vont y trouver un message sur leur histoire, sur leur origine. Ils vont comprendre que beaucoup de prophètes peuvent êt re communs à plusieurs religions, que beaucoup d’idées sont reprises d’une religion à une autre et que finalement le monde repose sur une interconnexion des civilisations, qu’elles soient culturelles ou idéologiques. L’avantage de cette exposition c’est que vous soyez Chinois, Espagnol, Turc ou autre, vous verrez un morceau

Madame Magazine - Where does your passion for coins come from?

Alain Baron - It came from an emotional shock that I had when I was 5 years old, while walking in a small Swiss town with my father. I saw an old coin in a shop window, it was a Swiss currency of two francs from 1886. When he saw how moved I was, my father bought it for me and that was the beginning of a passion which never left me.

This coin has also remained my favorite as for Uncle Scrooge.

MM - What did you dream of becoming when you were a child?

AB - Numismatist and I never had any other wish.

MM - In your exhibition, visitors will rediscover the lost coins of Islam, beyond the coins what are they going to find?

AB - They will find a message about their own history, their origin. They will understand that many prophets can be common to several religions, that many ideas are taken from one religion to another and that ultimately the world rests on an interconnection of civilizations, whether cultural or ideological. The advantage of this exhibition is that if you are Chinese, Spanish, Turkish or other, you will see a piece of your history that has survived and will be able to have an increased understanding of your origins.

MM - Selon vous, qu’est-ce qui va surprendre le plus les visiteurs?

AB - Je pense que ce qui va les surprendre c’est d’abord de constater à quel point la mosquée s’illustre par son message de tolérance et pour chacun de ses visiteurs, d’où qu’il vienne, de découvrir des témoins de sa propre histoire et, d’une certaine manière, de communiquer avec son passé.

MM - What is the purpose of this exhibition?

Do you have any plans for the future?

AB - We want to show how the currency can be a complete and exceptional messenger of the history of the world. I think that through this exhibition this objective is fulfilled. We are now in discussion with other institutions to ensure the continuation of this exhibition in other countries.

MM - Why is it important to show this collection to the public?

AB - The goal of the owner of the collection is educational. He wants to be able to share with the whole world the message that these coins deliver.

MM - What do you think will surprise visitors the most?

AB - I think that what will surprise them is first of all to see how well the mosque is carrying its message of tolerance and for each of its visitors, wherever they come from, to discover witnesses of their own history and, in a way, to communicate with their past.

While the Timemaster Chronograph is not really a new watch in the true sense of the word, it is for the first time that it comes with the unique skeletonized dial that adds a whole new dimension to the watch’s look and feel.

Two versions are available, one with a black dial finish and the other matte grey. The use of contrasting colours ensures all indications stand out clearly against the backdrop of the movement beneath.

Driving the Timemaster Chronograph Skeleton is the Swiss automatic caliber C. 741 S, the inner workings of which are on display on the dial side. The movement offers a power reserve of 46 hours and has a skeletonized rotor with côtes de Genève decoration.

More than half a century after introducing its Top Time watch, Breitling is launching an updated and upgraded model limited to 2000 pieces. Audemars Piguet unveils a new gem-set version of its 41 mm Royal Oak model encompassing both brilliant-cut diamonds and orange sapphires. Madame Magazine - Vous êtes arrivé aux EAU en septembre dernier, quelques semaines à peine avant la visite de votre Président, Ueli Maurer, à Abu Dhabi.

Comment s’est passée votre installation?

Massimo Baggi - Les premiers mois ont été intenses. Il a fallu connaître les dossiers très rapidement et dans le même temps, la visite de notre Président aux EAU m’a offert une chance unique de rencontrer rapidement tous les interlocuteurs les plus importants du pays.

Madame Magazine - You arrived in the UAE last September, just a few weeks before your President, Ueli Maurer’s v isit to Abu Dhabi. How was your installation?

Massimo Baggi - The first months were intense. It was necessary for me to know the files very quickly and at the same time, the visit of our President to the UAE offered me a unique chance to quickly meet all the most important interlocutors of the country.

MM - Le Président suisse s’est rendu aux EAU pour renfoncer et diversifier les intérêts entre les deux pays. Mais les relations entre la Suisse et les Émirats sont déjà très fortes et dynamiques. Pourriez vous nous en dire quelques mots?

MB - Je commencerai par le volet politique constitutionnel, car les EAU tout comme la Suisse sont une fédération. Nous cultivons cet esprit de l’État fédéral c’est-à-dire de la décentralisation. Chez nous c’est particulièrement poussé et les EAU sont confrontés aux mêmes défis. Cette même structure politique des deux pays nous rapproche. Dans le domaine culturel,

MM - The Swiss President has traveled to the UAE to strengthen and diversify interests between the two countries. But relations between Switzerland and the Emirates are already very strong and dynamic. Could you tell us a few words about this?

MB - I will start with the constitutional political aspect, because both the UAE and Switzerland are a federation. We cultivate this spirit of the federal state, that is to say decentralization. In Switzerland it is particularly advanced and the UAE face the same challenges. This same political structure of the two countries brings us together.

MM - Mais c’est dans le domaine économique probablement que la présence de la Suisse s’exprime le plus, notamment à travers les investissements?

Switzerland, with its four languages, its four different cultures, is particularly appreciated here. We often and willingly take part in major events, for example in the framework of Dubai Design Week where three of our Swiss schools were present, or the Sharjah Architecture Triennial.

MM - But it is probably in the economic field that the presence of Switzerland is expressed most, notably through investments?

MB - Indeed, we are a very important foreign investor compared to the size of our population.

Nous sommes aussi parmi les plus grands partenaires commerciaux des Emirats, au sixième ou septième rang. Ces échanges s’élèvent à peu près à 15 milliards d’euros par an. Les grandes multinationales suisses sont là, que ce soit dans la grande industrie pharmaceutique, avec Novartis et Roche, le secteur alimentaire avec Nestlé ou

If you consider the foreign direct investments, we are among the 10 largest investors in the UAE, with 17 billion euros of direct investments, it is quite considerable. We are also the sixth or seventh UAE’s largest trading partner. These exchanges amount to approximately 15 billion euros per year. The big Swiss multinationals are here, whether in the pharmaceutical industry, with Novartis and Roche, the food sector with Nestlé or the perfumers Gimona and Firmeni.

Our machinery and measurement industry is also very well represented. Without forgetting the Swiss banks, very well established in the UAE. What is quite exceptional is the presence of the Swiss

MM - Dans le domaine f inancier cette coopération concerne aussi de nouveaux services, au centre des intérêts des Emirats qui souhaitent développer notamment le secteur des FinTech?

MB - La Suisse a un certain savoir-faire dans ce domaine, cela crée des liens de manière naturelle.

How to ensure that these new services can develop in compliance with the criteria established internationally and which must be respected to avoid, for example, money laundering with virtual currencies etc? Moreover, there is a series of other questions, such as taxation or market access, which have to be discussed together.

MM - Le développement durable occupe aujourd’hui la première place dans les agendas des pays. La Suisse est depuis longtemps à la pointe dans ce domaine.

Les EAU quant à eux ont la double volonté de diversifier leur économie et de devenir une référence mondiale dans la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. 2020 y a d’ailleurs été déclarée «année du développement durable». Comment évolue votre collaboration dans ce secteur?

MB - Nous avons d’une part des solutions à proposer dans ce domaine et d’autre part de grandes banques qui ont déjà des lignes de crédit consacrées à des projets dans le secteur du développement durable. Nous regardons de près les possibilités de financer ce genre d’initiatives ici.

Mais la Suisse a aussi un grand défi énergétique à relever. Avec notre future sortie du nucléaire qui compte aujourd’hui pour un tiers de notre mix énergétique, il nous faut trouver de nouvelles façons pour économiser ces ressources, donc consommer moins, mieux, et différemment.

Cela veut aussi dire, utiliser plus d’énergies renouvelables. Ainsi, l’on se tourne vers les pays qui font des choix dans cette direction.

C’est le cas aux EAU, tout comme ça l’était au Maroc où j’étais en poste avant de venir aux EAU. Nous réfléchissons à de nouvelles voies pour transporter cette énergie.

This is a subject that Switzerland has been mastering for quite a while. The UAE want to diversify their economy and also set the benchmark in the fight against global warming; they have declared 2020 the “year of sustainable development”. How is your collaboration evolving in this sector?

MB - Regarding sustainable development, on the one hand we have solutions to offer and on the other hand large banks which already have lines of credit dedicated to projects. We are looking closely at the possibilities of funding such initiatives here. But Switzerland also has a great energy challenge to take up. With our future exit from nuclear power, which today accounts for a third of our energy mix, we need to find new ways to save these resources, so consume less, better, and differently. It also means using more renewable energy. So we turn to countries that are making choices in this direction. This is the case in the UAE, just as it was in Morocco where I was appointed before coming to the UAE. We are thinking of new ways to transport this energy.

MLM - Un salon clairement plus attractif, avec plus d’échanges, plus d’expériences, plus d’ouverture, plus tourné vers le futur et davantage adapté à chacun.

MM - Pour l’édition 2020 vous aviez évoqué des progressions en ce qui concerne le secteur «Gems & Pearls»...

MLM - Oui nous l’avons fait car il y a de ce côté-là un signal très fort. En novembre déjà, nous avions enregistré une hausse de plus de 50% d’exposants dans ce secteur. C’est tout à fait significatif et cela démontre que les lignes bougent. A force d’écoute, de dialogue et de créativité, nous avons su repositionner nos offres pour mieux répondre

MM - If you had to summarise very briefly the “pluses” of the 2021 edition, what would they be?

MLM - A clearly more attractive exhibition, with more exchanges, more experiences, more openness, more forward-looking and more adapted to everyone.

MM - For the 2020 edition, you reported progress in the “Gems & Pearls” sector...

MLM - Yes, we did because there is a very strong signal on that side. As early as November, we had already registered an increase of more than 50% in exhibitors in this sector. This is very significant and shows that the boundaries are shifting. Through listening, dialogue and

MLM - Absolument! Le «Community District» répond à cette nécessité de repenser notre offre. En répondant à la fois aux besoins des exposants et des visiteurs. C’est à l’évidence pourquoi des exposants qui avaient choisi de nous quitter il y a deux ans ont décidé de revenir à l’image de Maurice Lacroix. Cela prouve que nous répondons mieux et davantage aujourd’hui aux attentes des marques.

MM - Le «Community District», c’est aussi la réponse à un changement de modèle…

MLM - Certainement. L’horlogerie change, la distribution change, la communication change, il était assez naturel que Baselworld se transforme aussi! Conçu et imaginé en collaboration avec les marques, ce nouveau concept de «Community District» initie le changement du modèle B-to-B traditionnel vers une plateforme d’expériences pour toute la communauté: détaillants et distributeurs, médias, mais aussi collectionneurs, clients finaux et amateurs. Attentifs aux besoins des marques, nous avons voulu venir avec des propositions personnalisables, livrées clés en main, qui répondent à leurs exigences et besoins, notamment ici pour celles qui ont des réseaux de distribution étendus avec l’accueil et les flux de milliers de clients, tout en développant de grandes zones d’expériences pour le grand public en général.

MM - We understand that you have sought to propose more f lexible offers that are better adapted to everyone’s expectations.

Is the new Community District part of this commitment?

M L M - A b s ol ut e ly ! T he “C om mu n it y District” responds to this need to rethink our offer. By responding to the needs of both exhibitors and visitors. This is clearly why exhibitors who chose to leave us two years ago decided to return as for example, Maurice Lacroix. This proves that we are better and more responsive today to the expectations of brands. The “Community District” is also the answer to a change of approach... Certainly.

As watchmaking is changing, distribution is changing, communication is changing, it was quite natural that Baselworld should also be t ransformed! Designed and conceived in collaboration with the brands, this new “Community District” concept initiates the change from the traditional B-to-B model to a platform of experiences for the entire com mu n it y : ret a i ler s a nd d i st r ibutor s , media, but also collectors, end customers and enthusiasts. Attentive to the needs of brands, we wanted to come up with customisable, turnkey proposals that meet their requirements and needs, especially here for those with extensive distribution networks with the reception and flow of thousands of customers, while developing large experience areas for the public in general.

Just a stone’s throw from the most prestigious Swiss watchmaking brands, this is a fantastic opportunity for brands that want to make the most of our platform and, with us, transform Baselworld by experimenting with new formats.

This is how we imagined this “Community District”, a new complex of several large buildings, each housing two to three brands.

Identified thanks to a resolutely contemporary architecture, all transparent, with a harmonious layout between the different spaces whose interiors on two levels are customisable. This new meeting point, the “Community District”, combines prestige, with private areas reserved for professionals, with important new areas of experience for the general public.

MM - You have also developed and refined various offers for independent watchmakers.

What exactly is the situation?

MLM - We considered three distinct elements corresponding to the needs of independent ent repreneu rs at va r ious st ages of t hei r development. Les Ateliers, the Watch Gallery and the Incubator will be installed in spaces welcoming all watch enthusiasts who love to find here the hyper creativity of these craftsmen.

MLM - Grâce à un accord stratégique avec l’association des hôtels de la ville de Bâle, et avec pour objectif de faciliter l’accueil de nos exposants et visiteurs à Bâle, nous avons effectivement pu mettre en place dès cette année un nouveau service centralisé de e-conciergerie – axé sur les demandes individuelles et aussi collectives - capable de recevoir, conseiller, guider et réserver toutes les demandes d’hébergements et de séjours – hôtels, vols, mais aussi transferts, visites culturelles – au

MM - While they love surprises, visitors - exhibitors, professionals or others - do not appreciate unpleasant surprises. You have also worked in this direction. What is that all about?

MLM - Thanks to a strategic agreement with the Basel Hotel Association, and with the aim of facilitating the reception of our exhibitors and visitors to Basel, we were able to set up a new centralised e-concierge service this year - focused on individual and collective requests - able to receive, advise, guide and book all requests for accommodation and stays - hotels, flights, but also transfers, cultural visits - for the benefit

of exhibitors and visitors. Via a single point of contact and a contact person, visitors can book their entire trip and stay in Basel. This is a real plus for all those who will be joining us in April and May.

MM - Vous insistez beaucoup sur le rôle que prennent les marques dans la transformation de Baselworld. Est-ce si important?

MLM - C’est fondamental. Cette mutation, nous l’avons entreprise en écoutant nos exposants et ceux qui aimeraient le devenir. C’est une évidence, nous ne ferons pas seuls la transformation de Baselworld. Avec tous nos exposants, que ce soit dans les univers de l’horlogerie, de la joaillerie, des pierres et des perles, grandes, moyennes ou plus petites maisons, nous construisons des solutions adaptées et amorçons le changement tous ensemble.

MM - You insist a lot on the role that brands play in the transformation of Baselworld.

Is that so important?

M L M - T h i s i s f u nd a ment a l . We h ave undertaken this change by listening to our exhibitors and those who would like to become a part of it. It is obvious that we will not undertake the transformation of Baselworld alone. With all our exhibitors, whether in the world of watchmaking, jewellery, stones and pearls, large, medium or smaller houses, we build adapted solutions and initiate change together.

You will see this more concretely when the 2020 edition opens on April 30.

La nouvelle destination culturelle nommée «Plateforme 10» en référence à sa contiguïté aux neuf voies de la gare, a ouvert ses portes à Lausanne, sur le site des anciens hangars à locomotives. Elle abrite actuellement le Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts. Le Musée de l’Elysée (musée cantonal de la photographie) et le mudac (Musée du design et des arts appliqués contemporains) quitteront leurs locaux historiques pour rejoindre Plateforme 10 en 2021 créant ainsi un espace unique entièrement dédié à la culture.

The new cultural destination named “Plateforme 10” in reference to its proximity to the nine tracks of the railway station, has opened in Lausanne, on the site of the former locomotive sheds. It is currently home to the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (Cantonal Museum of Fine Art).

The Musée de l’Elysée (cantonal museum of photography) and the mudac (Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts) will move from their historical premises to Plateforme 10 in 2021 to create a unique space entirely devoted to culture.

Les Suisses ont parfois des idées folles.

Il existe, dans les montagnes bernoises, un petit train qui chemine au beau milieu de l’un des plus vastes glaciers d’Europe, f lanqué de deux des plus hauts sommets des Alpes. Il débarque ses passagers au pied de l’Observatoire astronomique du Sphinx, le plus élevé au monde. Au retour, le train s’arrête au col de la Petite Scheidegg, où fut construit au XIXème siècle un Grand hôtel, le Bellevue des Alpes, perché à plus de 2000 mètres d’altitude.

Il aura fallu une bonne dose de culot, et une ingénierie de précision et d’avant-garde, pour arriver à bout d’un projet ferroviaire entrepris en 1898, et qui offre aujourd’hui aux touristes du monde entier la possibilité d’admirer un paysage de haute montagne.

Le tunnel creusé à travers la montagne et sous le glacier, permet aux passagers de la Jungfraubahn d’atteindre le sommet sans effort. Une fois là-haut, la vue sur la vaste mer de glace d’un côté et l’immense vallée de l’autre est saisissante. On y voit par temps clair jusqu’aux Vosges! The Swiss can be bold. In the Bernese mountains, there is a little train that potters across the heart of one of Europe’s largest glaciers, flanked by two of the Alp’s highest mountains. Its passengers arrive at the foot of the Sphinx Observatory, the highest in the world. On its way back, the train stops at the Kleine Scheidegg Pass, where a Grand Hotel was built in the XIX century: the “Bellevue des Alpes”, perched at over 2000 meters altitude.

Dug through the mountain and under the glacier, the tunnel allows Jungfraubahn passengers to reach the summit effortlessly.

With your feet in snow at the height of summer, surrounded by seracs, crevasses and summits culminating at an altitude of 4,000 metres, the spectacle is breathtaking.

This is the heart of what is poetically k nown as t he “t rilog y of t he Bernese Oberland”, comprising the Jungfrau, the Mönch and the Eiger. For climbers, the Jungfrau and the Mönch are part of the highly selective “Alp 400” club. As for the legendary North face of the Eiger, known as the “Face of Death”, it is part of the three large North faces of the Alps. Believed to be invincible, its 1650 metre vertical face was only conquered after a four day climb, with a surface in parts as smooth as glass.

The world’s best climbers have conquered it.

Construit en 1840 par un certain Christian Seiler, l’hôtel Bellevue des Alpes est l’un des derniers du genre encore en activité en Suisse.

Avant l’invention du train à crémaillère, il fallait une journée de marche pour y parvenir et la logistique était assurée à dos de mulet.

Doté de chauffage et de salles de bains dans chacune des chambres, luxe ultime pour l’époque, le Grand hôtel y accueille encore skieurs en hiver et randonneurs en été.

No lengthy walk is required, as the valley’s train takes you right to the foot of the cliff face. It is even possible to spend the night in a grand hotel. Built in 1840 by Christian Seiler, the “Bellevue des Alpes” hotel is one of the last of its kind still operating in Switzerland. The Petite Scheidegg train station is jammed with people today. A cosmopolitan crowd transits through it morning to night between the trains coming up from the valley and those climbing to the glacier. But, when the last whistle has been blown at 6pm, only the hotel guests remain at the foot of the Eiger to admire the mountain and listen to the silence.

These privileged few enter a Belle Epoque decor, an unexpected and [insolite] setting high in the mountains. In winter, a wood fire burns in the entrance fireplace. The majestic circular staircase that leads to the rooms cracks under the weight of its years. Like a museum, its walls are covered by photographs and carvings of its famous guests from the past.
