Bentley unveils limited edition handBag collection to the middle east region
Bentley révèle sa collection de sacs à main en édition limitée pour la région du moyen-orient Deux modèles disponibles : le “Barnato et le “Continental” L’édition limitée comprend 160 pièces pour le monde entier dont 25 pour le Moyen-Orient. Le “Barnato” tient son nom de Diana Barnato, femme d’inf luence et fille du président de Bentley, Woolf Barnato, un des “Bentley Boys” originels. Presque dix ans après que la Bentley Continental GT soit lancée en 2003, le constructeur automobile a créé un sac qu’il a nommé d’après la voiture deux portes: la “Continental”. Dr Ariane Reinhart, Directrice des Ressources Humaines chez Bentley, a mené cette aventure. Sur le site de cet éditeur on peut lire: «Les livres que nous accompagnons ne sont pas configurés selon les standards du marché. Notre projet est en décalage, conformément à notre devise «le galimatias est voisin de la pompe». Le plaisir de lecture, la fraîcheur et l’amour des formes nouvelles sont, entre autres, des critères qui nous guident dans nos choix éditoriaux. Alternative, notre offre croit dans la qualité de l’écriture et l’intelligence des lecteurs car les livres ne sont pas que des produits formatés et les lecteurs ne sont pas que des consommateurs. L’écrit ure demeure une pet ite alchimie personnelle, elle n’est pas calcul d’apothicaire.» Avec «M ines de pet its riens su r un l it à ba ldaquin», R adu Bata publie une sorte de journal

Après des efforts soutenus pour bien tout rater comme il faut, RB touche au but! Carmen Duca est, quant à elle, si on la croit: «spécialisée en Phobies Expér i ment a les» et «Cu isi nes Orientales». «La fièvre des corps célestes» est son premier «plat» préparé avec des ingrédients tombés du ciel. Le synopsis est «simple»: Ami est secrétaire dans une agence de détectives. Submergée par la paperasse et clouée à son fauteuil à longueur de journée, son rêve est de participer à une enquête sur le terrain. Elle s’imagine avoir des pouvoirs un peu paranormaux pour
tirer au clair des investigations en panne sèche. L’occasion semble se présenter quand Marine Farinas demande à Théo, son patron, de résoudre l’insoluble énigme de l’assassinat de sa sœur. Madame Magazine – A fraction of the public opinion regards Saadiyat Cultural District as ‘’Imported arts’, a ‘franchise’ that does not help develop local talent. What would you have to say to them? Hissa Al Dhaheri – We look at projects as a way to build a full ecosystem where artists have access to and benefit from international art. When it comes to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, being a universal museum, we try capturing the essence of this region as a cultural crossroad between the East and the West. The museum itself will host all artworks from different civilizations in one trail, as a ‘walking through time’ experience. This is the true mission of Saadiyat Cultural District, one that brings acceptance and dialogue among cultures.

Qu’avez-vous à répondre à cela? Hissa Al Dhaheri – Nous étudions les projets afin de construire un écosystème global auquel les artistes ont accès et où ils peuvent tirer des bénéfices de l’Art international. En ce qui concerne Le Louvre Abu Dhabi, en tant que musée universel, nous tentons de nous emparer de l’essence de cette région comme carrefour culturel entre l’ouest et l’est. Le musée lui-même accueillera des oeuvres de différentes civilisations disposées de manière à offrir un cheminement au travers du temps. C’est là la vraie mission de Saadiyat Cultural district, apporter la tolérance et le dialogue parmi les cultures.

As the years pass by the number of acquired pieces increases decreasing the need for loans. MM – How do you intent to adapt Louvre Abu Dhabi to local culture and deal with the unavoidable taboo subject of art nudity? Hissa Al Dhaheri – Everything we acquire and present in the museum is based on the universal story we are trying to tell. Accepting our differences is an integral part of this region’s culture. We use existing exhibitions to understand and gain feedback from our audience in order to improve our offering.

MM – Comment pensez-vous adapter le Louvre Abu Dhabi à la culture locale et faire avec les tabous inévitables autour de la nudité dans l’art? Hissa Al Dhaheri – Tout ce que nous acquérons et présentons dans le musée est basé sur une

En Amazonie, un arbre ce n’est pas du bois, c’est un vivant, avec lequel on peut communiquer, qui a un esprit, une intelligence. Certaines espèces d’arbres sont considérées comme des bibliothèques : on s’y connecte pour aller chercher des informations précises. Dans beaucoup de tribus, quand on voit une personne, on voit en même temps toutes les couches invisibles de cette personne, son aura, son énergie. Nous nous

In Amazonia, a tree is not only wood, it has a mind and it is a living being you can communicate with. Some tree species are seen as libraries: one can connect to them, to look for specific information. In many tribes, when you meet someone, you see all the invisible layers which compose this person, you perceive her aura, her energy. While elaborating a new structure of society, we stayed away from these standards and these traditional beliefs. And yet, in quantum physics, scientists describe a reality in which everything comes

Les deux se marient inévitablement, et ce mariage peut être très positif. MM: Quels sont vos projets aux Emirats? Je suis invitée par l’Institut Français, en lien avec l’Université Zayed. Je travaille sur un projet de recherche, intitulé « Memory of Sand », qui sera sans doute présenté à Dubaï à l’automne 2014, dans le cadre de l’ISEA, le symposium international sur les arts électroniques. Je veux montrer que l’évolution de notre société et des technologies nous amène à une forme de réalité qui, de façon surprenante, se rapproche des sociétés les plus ancestrales. Je vais faire une analyse des chants et danses sacrés de la péninsule arabique, avec différents outils : des caméras, des systèmes sonores, des caméras thermiques et des interfaces cérébrales. L’idée est de faire

Consequently, there is no opposition between the past and the future: the two go inevitably together, and this mix can have an extremely positive impact. MM: What are your plans in the UAE? I am invited by the Institut Français, in connection with Zayed University. I am working on a research project, called « Memory of Sand », which will probably be presented in Dubai in the autumn of 2014, during the International Symposium on Electronic Art. I want to show that the development of our society and the new technologies leads us to a reality that is, quite surprisingly, close to ancestral societies. I am going to analyze the sacred songs and dances in the Arabian Peninsula with various tools, such as cameras, sound systems, thermal imaging cameras and brain interfaces. The idea is to improve the perception of the unseen and to give to these performances a kind of materiality in the form of sculptures, which will be made of sand with 3D printers. Every desert rose will represent a music and a dance. I am going to meet Emirati artists in the

Chaque rose des sables correspondra à une musique et à une danse. Je vais rencontrer des artistes émiriens dans le désert de Liwa, je passerai une semaine en Oman, avec les tribus, à la recherche des modes de vie et des savoirs traditionnels. J’ai aussi exposé dans l’espace de l’Art Hub, lors de l’Abu Dhabi Art Fair en novembre dernier. J’ai proposé un travail sur la cymatique, la science qui étudie les formes générées par les sons dans la matière. Pour l’installation « Sounds of light », j’ai utilisé des plateaux recouverts d’une fine pellicule d’eau, mise en mouvement par le son. Cela génère une série de micro-ondulations, qui sont supports de lumière et qui créent des reflets. J’ai travaillé sur une musique qui soigne, des chants sacrés, et sur l’eau car comme nous sommes composés nousmêmes de 70 à 90 % d’eau : ce que l’on voit à la surface de l’eau est le reflet de ce qui passe à l’intérieur de notre corps. Chaque type de musique génère dans l’eau des formes géométriques très différentes.
Liwa desert, and I will spend one week in Oman, with tribes, to study traditional lifestyles and knowledge. I also participated to the Art Hub exhibition during the Abu Dhabi Art Fair, last November. I have been working on cymatics, the study of visible sound. To create the performance “Sounds of light”, I used plates covered with a thin water layer, set in motion by the sound. It generates a series of micro-waves, which create shimmering light. I chose to work on a music that heals, such as sacred songs, and I used water because we are made up of 70 to 90% of water. What you see on the water’s surface reflects what is happening inside our body. Each type of music produces very different geometrical shapes in the water. MM: What projects are you most proud of ? One year ago, I developed a project which was introduced during the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio. It is named “one heart, one tree”. I installed 15 kilometers of elastic bands, to represent a kind of forest. When you go behind this forest, you

MM: Quelle est la réalisation dont vous êtes la plus fière? Il y a un an, j’ai monté un projet qui a été présenté dans le cadre du Sommet de la terre de l’ONU à Rio. Cela s’appelle « one heart, one tree ». C’est une installation de 15 kilomètres d’élastiques tendus dans l’espace, qui représentent une sorte de forêt. Quand on la contourne, on se retrouve face à un écran 3D. A chaque fois qu’une personne se place devant le dispositif, ce dernier génère une graine de lumière, qui grandit au rythme des battements de son cœur. C’est la présence de la personne et ses battements de cœur qui donnent vie à un arbre, unique et numéroté. Chaque arbre virtuel qui est créé dans cette forêt de lumières correspond à un arbre physique, planté dans le cadre d’un projet de reforestation. Chaque visiteur reçoit ensuite pendant un an des informations sur son arbre et sur le projet de reforestation auquel il a participé. Depuis un an, j’ai planté 6 000 arbres. Et j’ai pour projet d’en planter des millions. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de recréer le lien de vivant à vivant en utilisant l’immatériel, pour montrer que les technologies sont ce qu’on en fait : elles ne nous amènent pas nécessairement à nous déconnecter de la nature. M M: Vot re démarche peut sembler assez paradoxale : vous utilisez des outils qui sont le fruit de notre société matérialiste pour essayer d’en sortir… Aujourd’hui, même dans notre système capitaliste, les entreprises qui sont les plus cotées, qu’il s’agisse de Facebook ou d’Apple, sont des sociétés de l’immatériel. Comme les sociétés ancestrales finalement, dont il me

The presence of that person, and her heartbeats, give life to a unique and numbered tree. Every virtual tree created in this forest of lights corresponds to a real tree, planted as part of a reforestation project. The visitors will then get information, during one year, about their tree and about the reforestation project they participated to. I have planted 6 000 trees over the last year. And I plan to plant millions of them. What I am interested in is rebuilding the links between living beings, by using immateriality, to show that technologies are what we make of them: they do not always lead us to keep away from Nature. M M : Yo u r a p p r o a c h m i g h t s e e m q u i t e contradictory: you use tools generated by our materialistic society, in order to try to come out of it… Today, even in our capitalist system, the firms which are highly rated, such as Facebook or Apple, are the one dealing with the intangible. It is the same as in ancestral societies that we can look to in order to build our future. We are not heading towards the unknown,

semble intéressant de s’inspirer pour construire notre futur.. On ne va pas vers l’inconnu, on va vers quelque chose que l’on connaît déjà. Il est intéressant de s’enrichir de ces expériences. Par ailleurs, nous ne sommes pas dans une logique pyramidale, avec une avancée illimitée vers un idéal de progrès. Ce vers quoi nous allons peut aussi nous servir à nous reconnecter à des choses essentielles, avec un autre rapport à la nature et à l’autre, car nous sommes dans des sociétés extrêmement individualistes. Il est maintenant temps de basculer doucement vers d’autres modèles un peu plus ouverts, un peu plus altruistes. L’art peut aussi servir à cela.
we are moving towards something we already know. It is interesting to learn from past experiences. Furthermore, we are not in a pyramidal system, we are not endlessly moving forward an ideal of progress. The future improvements can help us reconnect to the crucial things and to gain a better relation with Nature and with other people. Our societies are extremely individualistic. The time has come to slowly switch to other models, which would be a little more open-minded and selfless. Art can help us do all this.

He was fascinated by fashion from an early age. As a teenager,

La collection a fait l’unanimité dans le milieu de la mode. Pour ce défilé, Ezra avait collaboré avec Swarovski. Les célèbres cristaux allaient de paire avec les longues robes du designer. Du très chic, très classe, très Ezra Santos. Considérées comme des chefs-d’oeuvre dans le milieu, les créations d’Ezra Santos ont pris une place importante sur la scène internationale, en particulier dans la région du Golfe. Sa passion

Ezra SANTOS – Divine Romanticism is a journey of a woman who loves with unmatched passion and is loved in returned with a fervor that encompasses all time greatness. It is a feast for the senses as it unravels a collection that is timeless, in a palette of colors that is beyond seasons and in luxuriousness with no limits. MM – How did the idea of this collection come up to you?

ES – Idea comes when I travel. I’m always inspired by the different places that I visit. MM – What do you like the most in creating clothes for women? ES – The part of the design that I enjoy the most is the production part and the construction. Sometimes I play with the fitting form and...voila! create a design. MM – Which culture inspires you the most? ES – I do love the different cultures and traditions here and mostly, I am inspired by the Emirati women love of fashion. MM – What’s the process from the first idea to the final dress? ES – It all starts with an inspiration, then drawing a lot of sketches, until I choose the final design and start creating the garment from embroidery to stitching. MM – What are your plans for 2014? ES – I am planning to create a prêt-a-porter line of wedding dresses.

He discovers in 1970 the art of distillation and starts producing homemade soaps and essential oils: lavender, rosemary, cade, olive tree, plants with unique scents and numerous cosmetic virtues. Young and dynamic, with a good “culture” of plants in his pocket and the help of a good old still, he drives from market to market in Provence in his small van. The adventure of L’Occitane begins. In 1976, he buys back an old soap factory and relaunches the “savon de Marseille”. The following year, confident of his success, he reserves his first harvest of lavender, emblem of the region. In 1980, concerned about discovering new ingredients for his productions, he discovers in

Behind the pure lines of the collection and in each of its golden pearls lies the legacy of Van Cleef & Arpels’ savoir-faire. Starting from the 1920s, the Maison bordered the stones of some of its creations with a slim thread in textured metal. In order to highlight the lines and precious materials of certain pieces, Van Cleef & Arpels also used, from the end of the 1960s, the round bead setting technique that outlines the jewels with gold. The jury of the 13th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) unveiled its prize list on the evening of Friday November 15th 2013. 15 prizes honoured the year’s finest watch creations, including the supreme distinction, the “Aiguille d’Or”, which was awarded to Girard-Perregaux for the Constant Escapement L.M watch.

Jack Burlot - En 1974 je me suis rendu dans les Emirats pour effectuer un reportage sur ce nouvel Eldorado pétrolier sans penser que j’allais y découvrir un homme d’exception et la naissance d’une nation. J’ai eu Jack Burlot le grand plaisir de rencontrer Sheikh ZAYED, “le Prince des A rabes”, lors d’u ne réception officielle durant l’anniversaire de la création des UAE et, moment rare dans ce type d’événement, nos regards ce sont croisés. Je crois que ce jeune homme, de 20 ans à l’époque, l’amusait, tandis que j’étais, moi, fasciné par la puissance dégagée par sa personnalité. Nous nous sommes rencontrés plusieurs fois au palais et également lors d’un court séjour dans le désert pour une chasse au faucon. Je suis retourné plusieurs fois à Abu Dhabi dans les années 80 et même si je n’ai pas eu la chance de le rencontrer à nouveau, il y avait toujours un cadeau de bienvenue de sa part qui m’attendait!

I had the chance to be i nt ro duc e d to L ate Shei k h Zayed, t he “Prince of the Arabs” du r i ng a n off icia l reception organized for the UAE national day. Our eyes met. I think he was amused as I was just a 20 year old boy, whilst I was fascinated by the power of his personality. We have met several times at the palace and also for a short trip in the desert during a falcon hunt. I came back several times in the 80’s and even if I did not get the chance to meet him again there was always a welcome gift for me on his behalf.

MM – Quelle impression cet homme vous a-t-il fait sur le moment? Jack Burlot - J’ai toujours été passionné par les hommes du désert et j’aime vivre avec eux, que ce soit les Touaregs au Sahara ou les Bédouins du Moyen-Orient. Je retrouvais chez lui cette force si particulière née des conditions difficiles d’existence dans ce type d’environnement. MM – Vous êtes photographe… parlez-nous de ce qui vous a frappé dans le visage de Sheikh Zayed Jack Burlot - Je n’ai jamais oublié son regard perçant et doux à la fois, ce visage buriné, l’élégance naturelle de ses gestes, l’intelligence brillante qui émanait de sa personne, son charisme, son humanisme. J’ai rencontré de nombreux chefs d’états pendant ces années de reportage mais aucun ne m’a laissé un souvenir aussi fort, presque affectif.
MM - What did you think of Sheikh Zayed when you first met ? Jack Burlot - I have always had a passion for the men from the desert and I like living with them, either the Touaregs from Sahara or the Bedouins from the Middle East. I could find in Late Sheikh Zayed this particular strength given by the difficult conditions of living in this kind of environment. MM - You are a photographer… Tell us what impressed you so much in Sheikh Zayed? Jack Burlot - I have never forgotten his piercing but soft eyes, the lines on his face, his natural elegant gesture, he was so clever, charismatic and humanist. Since then, I have met a lot of country leaders for my work but none of them has left me with such a deep and emotional souvenir. MM - Coming back to the UAE, how do you feel ? Jack Burlot - I come back to this country after thirty years, to discover the footprint of Late Sheikh Zayed and his vision from a desert to a modern city as Abu Dhabi is today. Following my 1974 exceptional meeting, I have decided to offer two portraits of Sheikh Zayed to support the Ewaa’a association and to raise awareness about them.
MM – Quel effet vous fait ce retour aux Emirats? Jack Burlot - Je reviens dans ce pays trente ans après pour découvrir l’empreinte de Sheikh ZAYED et sa vision réalisée du désert à cette modernité culturelle qu’offre Abu Dhabi aujourd’hui. Shei k h Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, prince héritier d’Abu Dhabi signe un accord avec l’Université ParisSorbonne (Paris IV) afin d’établir pour la première fois une université française hors de France. D’autres comme Paris Descartes (Paris V ) prennent part au projet pour implanter des départements comme le droit ou l’économie. Projet ambitieux que de vouloir créer un noyau francophone dans un univers arabophone et anglophone. La particularité de cette université est d’avoir une double identité émirienne et française. L’Abu Dhabi Education Council décide du budget et en contrôle l’activité. Le conseil d’administration est composé de trois émiriens et de trois français. La transmission du savoir se fait majoritairement en français : les cursus, dispensés par des professeurs venant de France, sont les mêmes qu’à Paris.

C’est sur l’île de Reem Island, à Abu Dhabi, que le chantier, confié à la société Mubadala, a été lancé. À l’époque, l’île était encore un grand désert vierge de toute urbanisation. Such a project needed a campus that could live up to its ambition. In its early stage, the university didn’t have its own premises and the first students were welcomed in modest buildings rented on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. The first graduating class had 150 students. The actual campus was funded by the Abu Dhabi Education Council for an estimated budget of € 225 million and the project, entrusted to Mubadala was launched on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi. At the time, the island was still a large empty desert land, but is now under construction with large buildings and a mall open to the public.

Ce magnifique établissement ultra moderne a été inauguré plus tardivement, en février 2011, par François Fillon, alors 1er ministre français, et S.E. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

a bUilding honoUring the french Sorbonne The Sorbonne Abu Dhabi echoes that of Sorbonne Paris. Indeed, the Sorbonne’s famous dome now shines in the UAE desert: a copy of the dome of St. Ursula’s chapel was reproduced. It proudly stands 25 meters high and is visible as you enter the island. The academic buildings are organized in five branches around this dome: an administrative branch, two for the classrooms, one for the library, and one branch for a theatre. French-style and Arab-style gardens separate them. The refinement of the Arab garden is carried to extremes and from the sky; the plants form the word “Sorbonne” written in Arabic. One area of the university is entirely devoted to a huge 4,400 m2 library organized on two levels with some 200,000 volumes. The majority of the works are in French but there’s also an English and Arabic section. A large French-style theatre entirely built in wood occupies an area, accommodating up to 700 people. It’s in this theatre that most events, like the university graduation for example, take place. Besides this theatre

français et le jardin arabe. Le raffinement du jardin arabe est poussé à l’extrême: vu du ciel, les plantes forment le mot «Sorbonne» écrit en arabe. Une des parties de l’établissement est uniquement consacrée à une immense bibliothèque de 4 400m2, organisée sur deux étages et d’une capacité de 200000 volumes. La majorité des ouvrages est en français mais il existe aussi une part anglophone et arabophone. Un grand théâtre à la française, tout en bois, occupe une branche à lui seul et peut accueillir jusqu’à 700 personnes. C’est à l’intérieur de ce théâtre qu’ont lieu les événements de l’université comme la remise des diplômes par exemple. À ce théâtre, s’ajoutent deux amphithéâtres plus petits nommés Richelieu et Robert de Sorbon. Ils rendent hommage à Robert de Sorbon qui créa la Sorbonne en 1253 et à Richelieu, qui, lorsqu’il en fut le proviseur à partir de 1622, donna à l’université l’apparence que nous connaissons d’aujourd’hui. S’ajoutent à ce grand bâtiment administratif un complexe sportif et une résidence universitaire. L’Université dispose d’un grand gymnase avec des tribunes, des salles de yoga, de musculation, un mur d’escalade et même deux courts de tennis sur le toit de la structure. La résidence universitaire accueille dans deux bâtiments séparés les filles et les garçons, conformément aux lois du pays. La Sorbonne-Abu Dhabi est en passe de réussir son pari: implanter un noyau francophone au cœur du Golfe.
are two smaller auditoriums named Richelieu and Robert de Sorbon, paying tribute to Robert de Sorbon who created the Sorbonne in 1253 and to Richelieu who during his mandate as Principal from 1622 gave the university its present appearance. Added to this great office building are the sports complex and the university residence. The University boasts a large gym with grandstands, yoga rooms, bodybuilding equipment, a climbing wall and even two tennis courts on the roof of the structure. The university residence welcomes girls and boys in two separate buildings, respecting the laws of the country. The Sorbonne-Abu Dhabi is about to reach its goal: establish a French centre at the heart of the Gulf Region.

Selon «The Land Matrix» un projet global et indépendant de surveillance des terres, les E.A.U y sont classés troisième pays investisseur au monde. Le nom de cette entreprise vient de l’arabe et signifie «ça nous concerne» et c’est vrai. Elle a pour objectif de faire correspondre à la fois les besoins des citoyens et résidents des E.A.U. et ceux des communautés les plus pauvres au monde. Nahtam a pour projet de monter une ferme bio au Ghana qui produirait des bananes, des ananas, des papayes et des avocats. De plus, si ce projet fonctionne, la ferme sera étendue pour y ajouter une plantation de tecks, de bois de santal, et manguiers ainsi que d’hévéas. Cette ferme servirait les deux partis : Nahtam aurait la capacité de produire en grande quantité grâce à une surface de plus de 1600 ha et d’en expédier une grande partie aux E.A.U. où ces produits
company is Nahtam Social Responsibility; an Abu-Dhabi based private voluntary organization. The name of the company is derived from an Arabic word which means “We Care” and they do. It intends to address evolving social needs of UAE citizens, residents and the poorest communities around the world. Nahtam is planning to set up an organic farm in Ghana which would produce pineapples, papaya, bananas and avocados. We are also planting teak, sandal wood, mango trees and rubber trees. This farm would be most beneficial to both parties: Nahtam would be able to produce such products in great quantities over the 4,000 hectares of land and ship part of them back to the United Arab Emirates, where they are sorely missed and would cost way more to produce. Locals will also

manquent cruellement et où ils coûteraient bien plus chers à produire. Les populations locales tireraient, elles aussi, grand bénéfice de ce projet : le Ghana a un fort taux de chômage (12,9% entre 2011 et 2013) ce qui rend l’arrivée d’un besoin de main d’oeuvre particulièrement intéressante. Ce projet fera appel à 2000 travailleurs et plus, venus de 36 villages. Nahtam a exprimé clairement son désir que cela soit fait à la fois de manière écologique (les produits chimiques sont bannis) et dans une harmonie sociale. Si c’est vraiment le cas et que cela apporte autant au Ghana que promis, alors c’est peut-être le signe annonciateur d’une nouvelle ère pour les pays africains…Mais rien n’est encore joué, Nahtam doit encore faire la preuve concrète de sa réussite. Trop d’espoirs ont déjà été déçus ou malmenés dans le passé…Seul le temps saura nous dire...

Madame Magazine - Tout d’abord parlons de la «Fondation Internationale José Carreras contre la leucémie». Vous utilisez votre voix comme vecteur de communication pour envoyer un message d’espoir. Que signifie la fondation pour vous et quel est le rôle joué par Chopard? José Carreras – La fondation est un moyen de donner en retour. Alors que j’étais malade j’ai reçu des gestes de solidarité très réconfortants, de l’affection et de la générosité de la part de gens anonymes du monde entier. De plus, la communauté internationale des scientifiques s’est beaucoup impliquée, offrant une aide très précieuse. C’est ce qui m’a inspiré la création de la fondation, née de la volonté de trouver un remède à cette maladie. Chopard a été à mes côtés depuis le début il y a plus de 25 ans faisant de cette croisade un engagement personnel. Je ne pourrai jamais assez exprimer ma gratitude envers la famille Chopard. Elle a été à la fois généreuse financièrement et d’un grand soutien émotionnel.
Madame Magazine - Let’s begin by talking about ‘The José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation’. You are using your voice as a powerful medium to send an inspiring message of hope. What does the foundation mean to you and what role does Chopard play? José Carreras - The foundation is a possibility to pay bank debts. During the time of my illness I received overwhelming gestures of solidarity, affection and generosity from anonymous people around the world. In addition to this, the international medical scientific community also got involved offering valuable professional help, something that inspired the set-up of the foundation born with the objective to find a cure for Leukemia. Chopard has been by my side since the beginning more than 25 years ago making this ‘crusade’ a personal commitment. I cannot express my gratitude enough to the Chopard family. It has been both financially generous and emotionally supportive.

Beside all the projects and programs we have been running for many years, t he foundation is currently working on the creation of a research Institute in Barcelona. This is a project financed by us. The center intends to host around one hundred resea rchers work i ng full time to find a cure for Leukemia. I’m very proud of the achievements made up to date however the road ahead is still long.

MM - Moving onto your career, one of your most prosperous performances has been ‘The Three Tenors’? To what do you attribute the success of this venture? JC - At the time in 1990, with Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti we thought it was a good idea to reward our audience with one joined concert. We were so overwhelmed by our fortune that we continued to sing together until 2002, completing a total of 31 concerts. I attribute the success to our chemistry on stage, what in my opinion captivated the audience.

MM – Est-ce qu’il y a un artiste avec qui vous rêvez de partager la scène ? JC – Je trouve que je suis une personne très privilégiée. Dans le domaine de la musique classique j’ai fait équipe avec la majorité des plus grands talents mondiaux. Mais ceci-dit, chanter avec la révélation britannique Adele serait une expérience extraordinaire. MM – Quel est votre prochain projet musical ? JC - J’en ai un très important en avril prochain avec un nouvel opéra tout d’abord en Espagne, en Russie un peu plus tard, puis en Autriche et dans d’autres pays ensuite. Vous en saurez plus très bientôt.

Le “ski-cross”, discipline qui n’a été reconnue aux Jeux Olympiques qu’en 2010, kesako ? Il s’agit d’une variante de la grande catégorie du “free-style” ou les parcours sur lesquels évoluent les champions ne sont que successions de bosses et de pentes a très fort dénivelés. Le principe repose sur une course durant laquelle 4 ou 6 compétiteurs prennent le départ sur une piste assez large et accidentée. Les deux premiers sur la
Ski cross was only recognized as an official sport in the Olympic games in 2010. But what is it? It is considered part of freestyle skiing and the athletes ski on a succession of bumps and steep slopes. The principle is based on a race, during which a group of 4 or 6 skiers start on a large and hilly slope. The first two to cross the finish line skip the next round and so on until the final. The big challenge? Speeds can reach up to 80 to 90 km/h with jumps of more

On repense notamment au décès du canadien Nick Zoricic en mars 2012.
Une fin de carrière prévUe après les JO 2014 de sOtchi Ophélie David, née dans le nord de la France, près du Touquet d’un papa Hongrois joueur de basket professionnel, a débuté le ski alpin à 11 ans lorsque sa famille a décidé de s’installer dans leur petit studio de vacances à la montagne. Un âge assez avancé déjà quand on pense que beaucoup de champions développent une passion pour leur discipline vers 5 ou 6 ans; mais un âge qui ne l’a pas empêchée de devenir très rapidement la meilleure de sa catégorie. Ophélie s’entraine avec un partenaire masculin via la Team Continental Finance. Il n’y a ainsi aucune compétition directe entre eux. Son entrainement aujourd’hui est majoritairement en salle. Avec une moyenne d’âge située autour de 25 ans dans sa discipline, la compétition est rude. La récupération devient plus

She started downhill skiing at the age of 11 when her family moved to their small holiday studio in the mountains. An advanced age, when most champions start practicing at the age of 5 or 6. But an age that did not stop her from rapidly becoming the best in her category. Ophélie trains with a male partner via Team Continental Finance. In this way, there is no direct competition between them. Today, her training happens mostly indoors. With an average age of 25 among competitors, her sport is highly competitive. Physical recovery becomes always more complicated and training always harder. Training on snow takes place in Switzerland or in Austria where ski cross slopes actually exist and are made available to the teams. It is apparently not the case in France where ski resorts barely support their teams.

Depuis, elle a été 8 fois championne du monde et compte bien défendre ses titres ainsi que les couleurs de la France aux prochains Jeux Olympiques de Sotchi en Russie en décrochant une médaille d’or! Ensuite elle aimerait se tourner vers d’autres horizons en quittant la compétition.
Ophélie David, 37, has been a pioneer in freestyle skiing. She discovered the discipline almost by chance, during a trip to the United States. Since t hen, she has been 8 t imes world champion and still intends to defend her titles and French national colours during the next Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, by winning a gold medal! Madame Magazine – Votre cuisine est une véritable expérience culinaire. Où avez-vous fait vos gammes avant de prendre en main les cuisines du Burj Al Arab? Maxime Luvara – J’ai travaillé aux côtés de figures emblématiques de la grande cuisine comme Alain Ducasse au Louis XV, trois étoiles au Michelin à Monaco, et avec Antoine Westermann au Burehiesel – un autre restaurant trois étoiles à Paris. De plus, j’ai travaillé dans un grand nombre d’autres restaurants et cuisines dans certains des plus luxueux hôtels de par le monde, comme l’hôtel restaurant trois étoiles Troisgros en France, le deux étoiles de Crillon Les Ambassadeurs en France et le Saint Geran au One & Only à l’Ile Maurice.
Born in Italy and raised in France, Maxime Luvara has joined the Burj Al Arab in 2011, bringing to the iconic hotel his experience in mastering the art of classical French, Mediterranean and fusion cuisine gained at d i fferent M ichel i nst a r red rest au ra nts i n various parts of the world. Madame Magazine met with Maxime and wanted to know more about this amazing Chef. Madame Magazine – Yo u r c u i s i n e i s a culinary experience. Tell us a little more about your career path before you arrived in the kitchens of the Burj AL Arab. Maxime Luvara – I have been working closely with prominent figures as Chef Alain Ducasse in Le Louis XV - three Michelin stars restaurant in Monaco, and with Chef Antoine Westermann in Le Burehiesel – another three Michelin stars restaurant in Paris. Additionally, I worked in many other restaurants and kitchens in some of the most luxurious hotels around the world, such as three-Michelin-starred hotel restaurant Troisgros in France, two-Michelinstarred de Crillon Les Ambassadeurs in France, and One and Only Le Saint Geran in Mauritius.

MM – Et lorsque c’est le moment de créer, d’où vous vient votre inspiration? ML – Je travaille les produits de saison. C’est le seul moyen d’obtenir le meilleur des superbes ingrédients dont nous pouvons disposer. Par exemple, nous recevons en ce moment les truffes blanches d’Alba de notre fournisseur que nous avons sélectionné pour la très haute qualité de ses produits. Elles sont à présent sur notre nouveau menu. L’automne et l’hiver sont les saisons pour le gibier, les Saint-Jacques... et nous avons les meilleurs fournisseurs. Tous ont une histoire à raconter; c’est celle-ci qui m’inspire en cuisine. Je veux sublimer le travail de ces artisans en respectant la qualité de leurs produits.
MM - And when it’s time to create, where does your inspiration come from? ML – I work with seasonal products. This is the only way to get to best of the wonderful ingredients we can have. For example, we are receiving now the Alba white truff les from our selected supplier; they are now on our menu. Autumn and winter are the best seasons for game, scallops... and we have the best suppliers. All of them have a beautiful story to tell, which inspires me in the kitchen. I want to sublime the work of these artisans by respecting the quality of their products.

Christophe Colomb, en 1492, découvrait l’Amérique, par hasard, alors qu’il était porteur d’une lettre d’introduction pour le Grand Khan de Chine… Après plusieurs vaines tentatives de colonisation du continent américain, sous le règne d’Elisabeth I d’Angleterre, c’est en 1620 que le trois mats, Mayflower, débarquait cent trente et un pèlerins protestants fuyant les persécutions religieuses de Jacques Ier. Ces quakers fondèrent la première colonie britannique sur le continent, à Plymouth, chassant de leur terre ancestrale les indiens Wampanoag… Si la moitié d’entre eux, ni pêcheurs ni chasseurs, ne survivront pas au premier hiver, les autres feront souche. Madame Magazine est partie sur les traces de ces immigrants britanniques, austères et puritains.

After many vain attempts to colonize the American continent under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England it was in 1620 that the three masts of the Mayflower appeared, unloading 131 protestant pilgrims escaping the religious persecution of James I. These Quakers founded the first British colony on the continent, in Plymouth, chasing the Wampanoag Indians from their ancestral territory... If half of them, neither fishermen nor hunters, couldn’t survive the first winter, those remaining were to establish the line. Madame Magazine set out to explore the remnants of these frugal and puritanical British immigrants.

ON THE ROAD TO BOSTON… La route boisée entre New-York et Boston flirte avec la mer. On traverse des ponts enjambant des golfes, des baies, des petits ports de plaisance et des rivières qui se jettent dans l’Océan Atlantique dans les cris aigus des mouettes et des cormorans. Une réplique du navire Mayflower est à quai dans le joli port de Plymouth. Au Sud de Boston, le Cap Cod, dit de la morue, est une longue presqu’île boisée de 150 kms sur laquelle viennent s’échouer les vacanciers des grandes capitales et les familles aisées de Boston. Des touristes se pressent sur la plage de Hyannis Port pour observer de loin les maisons du clan Kennedy. Comme au Touquet ou sur l’île de Ré, on se promène en vélo le long des plages de sable ou de galets. Lorsque l’on sort de la fébrilité new-yorkaise, Boston somnole comme une ville de province à peine touchée par la modernité. C’est pourtant dans les églises et les maisons en briques rouges de Boston qu’ont couvé les premiers feux de la révolution américaine. En 1750, Boston comptait 15 000 habitants. C’était la troisième ville de l’Amérique du Nord. Son activité portuaire et industrielle était florissante : la construction navale, la métallurgie, les fabriques de textiles,

South of Boston, Cape Cod is a long wooded peninsula of about 150km on which holiday makers from the big cities and well off Boston families spend their vacations. La « cité de l’amour fraternel » basée sur l’égalité de tous et les Droits de l’Homme était une cité pacifique : les armes étaient interdites et l’idée même de légitime défense était proscrite. Quaker City fut la porte d’entrée de tous les réfugiés de la vieille Europe, des esprits libres, des artistes et des aventuriers! Ville natale de Benjamin Franklin, c’est véritablement le berceau de la démocratie américaine et la première capitale des Etats-Unis de 1790 à 1800. The “city of brotherly love”, based on equality for all and human rights, was a peaceful city: weapons were banned and even the idea of lawful defense was forbidden. Quaker City was the entryway for all of the refugees of old Europe, free spirits, artists and explorers! Benjamin Franklin’s city of birth, it is truly the cradle of American democracy and from 1790 to 1800, the first American capital. La petite bibliothèque séduit, avec son coin du feu, ses vieux livres aux couvertures de cuir suranné et les ouvrages consacrés au théâtre. Le salon extérieur sert de fumoir tout en conservant l’esprit «boudoir». Dans la salle du petit déjeuner transformée en salon de thé l’après-midi avec la formule «Honesty bar», le vieux rose des tissus s’accorde au gris perle des fauteuils. En haut, la suite «Toits de Paris» est un duplex conçu comme un décor de théâtre dominé par le rouge. Les caves voûtées du sous-sol livrent aussi leur secret : un espace consacré au bienêtre avec bain de détente et mosaïques. Et si le service demeure celui d’un hôtel quatre étoiles, avec ses petites imperfections, les visiteurs n’en ont cure, l’important étant de se sentir «comme à la maison»… Les décorateurs, « Exclusive Interiors by T&T » ont donné forme à leurs envies d’intimité. Une délicieuse parenthèse.
