REVISED EDITION

The Caribbean Language Arts Project materials have all been thoroughly revised by teams of experienced, practising Primary School teachers and officers of the St Lucia Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports as a cooperative venture with Macmillan Caribbean. They build on earlier materials prepared by the Curriculum and Materials Development Unit of the Ministry of Education in St Lucia. The main content of the series is drawn from the everyday lives of the children, with great use made of people, objects and scenes in the immediate environment. The content is closely linked to the St Lucia Language Arts curriculum, and offers a complete graded development of Language Arts Skills. How does the revised edition vary from the original edition? The material and style of the original Phonic and Alphabet Books and Workbooks has been upgraded to produce the larger-format, full-colour Activity Books that can be used for several years, and Workbooks that children write in and which therefore need to be changed every year. The six new Readers (one per grade) continue to offer the benefits of graded readers and for the higher grades include comprehension questions and activities. The new books offer a more lively, interesting and up-to-date treatment of Language Arts.

MATHEMATICS

CARIBBEAN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS Laurie Sealy and Sandra Moore Bright Sparks is a series designed to shine a light on the potential of each child.  With a generous emphasis on problem solving, Bright Sparks connects Mathematics to familiar real life experiences in the Caribbean.  It helps students see that Mathematics is far more than learning calculations, but rather something all around them, infused in everything they do.   In each of the seven Student’s Books from Kindergarten level (Book K) to the culmination of Primary School (Book 6), higher thinking skills are systematically developed.  Explanations and examples introduce each new concept, a feature proving invaluable to teachers, students and parents alike.   Bright Sparks helps students learn to reason, teaching students to analyse, apply different strategies and try multiple approaches to finding solutions.  It includes tools like Hint, Remember and Challenge, to help teachers differentiate and reach all students.

READERS

A superb collection of books which children will enjoy and want to read again and again. Aimed at children around 6 to 11 years old, Hop, Step, Jump is not a reading scheme, but a set of absorbing, child-centred stories, rhymes, riddles, songs and fact books, collected from diverse sources and excitingly illustrated in a variety of styles. The books are arranged at three language levels: Hop, Step and Jump. The series moves on from stories told in simple sentences with basic grammatical sentences (HOP), through freer use of language (STEP) to the level of reading reached at the end of primary school (JUMP). From these varied and individual books, students can choose those which challenge or strengthen their reading skills.

The C. Everard Palmer Collection C. Everard Palmer was born in Kendal in the Jamaican parish of Hanover. He had his early education in the rural community after which he attended Mico Teachers’ College in Kingston. He worked as a journalist with the Gleaner Company before starting a career as an author. All his stories have so far been inspired by the memories of his childhood, and though the people and incidents are imagined they could easily have been real. These popular works of junior fiction are all exciting stories of life in rural Jamaica, told with warmth, affection and insight.

The Sun Salutes You

The story, set in Jamaica like all of Everard Palmer’s stories, is funny, exciting – and keeps us guessing until the end.

In spite of the tension inherent in the plot, this shows the same gaiety and zest that characterise Palmer’s previous stories. With vivid phrases and fresh dialogue, the author brings to life the characters of this Jamaican village.

HISTORY

UNESCO General History of the Caribbean This is the most comprehensive history of the Caribbean ever published. The books have been compiled by teams of historians under the guidance of the International Advisory Scientific Committee of UNESCO. They integrate the historical experience of Caribbean society from the earliest times to the present day. Each volume is organised thematically in order to focus on the societies, cultures and activities of the Caribbean people throughout their history.

Volume 1 Autochthonous Societies Editor: Professor Jalil Sued Badillo

This volume relates the history of the origins of the earliest Caribbean peoples, and analyses their various political, social, cultural and economic organizations over time. Paperback | 32pp plates | 496pp | 9780333724538 Hardback | 9780333724521

Volume II New Societies The Caribbean in the Long Sixteenth Century Editor: Professor Peter Emmer

The subject of this volume is the evolution of Caribbean society through the intrusion of Europeans, and it examines the dramatic changes in politics, society and culture which occurred until 1680. These changes are studied in conjunction with the rapidly dwindling presence of the Amerindians and the increasing numbers of Spanish, English, French and Dutch settlers. Paperback | 16pp plates | 362pp | 9780333724552

Volume III Slave Societies of the Caribbean Editor: Professor Franklin Knight

The slave societies were more than societies with enslaved Africans, so this volume examines the demographic and economic as well as social and cultural aspects of all those communities which resulted from the establishment of the Caribbean slave systems. Paperback | 16 plates | 400pp | 9780333656051

Volume IV The Long Nineteenth Century Editor: Professor Manual Moreno Fraginals

Volume IV begins with the initiation of a ‘free’ e’ society aft after slavery was abolished. Slavery and its destruction form merely a background. It follows that the different parts of the Caribbean region enter the picture effectively only when they leave slavery behind. Then after firmly establishing freedom the story moves naturally to the time of the First World War and the substitution of the United States for the Europeans in the role of overlord. Paperback | 656pp | 9780333724576 Hardback | 9780333724569

Volume V The Caribbean in the Twentieth Century Editor: Professor Bridget Brereton

Volume V provides an account and interpretation of the historical development of the region from around 1930 to the end of the twentieth century. The prevalence and persistence of the plantation, the ubiquity of underemployment, the vulnerability of dependent Caribbean economies, popular and labour protests, decolonisation and neo-colonialism are all considered in this volume. Paperback | 792pp | 9780333724590 Hardback | 9780333724583

Volume VI Methodology and Historiography of the Caribbean Editor: Professor Barry Higman

Volume VI looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region depending on their methods on interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The chapters which discuss methodology are followed by studies of particular themes of historiography.  The second half of the volume describes the writing of history in the individual territories. The final part of Volume VI is a full and detailed bibliography which serves not only as a guide to the volume, but also as an invaluable reference for the UNESCO General History of the Caribbean series as a whole. Paperback | 16pp plates | 964pp | 9780333724613
