Note from the Publisher

Note from the Publisher: Welcome to the 2019 Caribbean catalogue. The team has been very busy over the last year! Starting with a particular focus on social studies, first up we’ve seen the publication of our brand-new series, Primary Social Studies for the Caribbean. This interactive, skills-based course for grades 4 to 6 is supported by teacher’s guides, online resources, and country-specific workbooks. At lower secondary we have the second edition of Social Sciences for Trinidad and Tobago; and for CSEC® we have another new course, Social Studies for CSEC® Examinations, which provides a 21st Century approach to learning with a firm focus on contemporary social issues in the Caribbean region. We’ve also refreshed many of our other core CSEC® offerings. I’m pleased to present the second edition of English Matters for CSEC® Examinations, and next year you’ll also see new editions of IT for CSEC® Examinations and Principles of Business for CSEC® Examinations. All of these titles have been updated to reflect the latest syllabus releases and have dedicated SBA chapters, along with SBA tips and skills practice woven throughout to build up skills in preparation for the final project. In addition, we can now boast a full suite of updated Worked Solutions to support students through their revision. Finally, we are pleased to launch a whole range of new and updated titles for Jamaica’s new National Standards Curriculum: new editions of Language Tree Jamaica, Primary Social Studies for Jamaica, English Matters Jamaica and Integrated Science for Jamaica, sit beside three brand-new series, Mission Science Jamaica, Explore Maths, and Grade 9 Sciences for Jamaica. In other news we have received a wonderful response to our website following its launch last year. As well as hosting information on all our latest news and resources it also delivers over 1,000 resources that are free for anyone to download and use – make sure to have a browse! Our eBook portfolio continues to expand, with all new titles being published simultaneously in print and e-format. Remember to have a look at what’s available to download as an eBook at: www.macmillancaribbeanebooks.com. At Macmillan we are privileged to be able to work with the very best authors and educators to write, develop, review and refine our resources. We would like to say a very big thank you to them because they play a pivotal role in making all of our publishing possible and ensuring it is to the very highest possible standard.

Each unit begins with learning objectives, written in child-friendly language. These clearly signpost which syllabus objectives are being met and engage learners with the topic.

2

A range of activities help students to engage with the topics, developing the skills of critical thinking, investigation and analysis, evaluation, discussion and debate, map reading and social skills.

‘What have you learnt’ questions provide opportunities to review learning, and can be used to embed prior learning before moving on.

SECTION 3: Individuals, Groups and Institutions

Gr ou ps an d ins titu tio ns Learning objectives When I have finished this unit, I will be able to: • • • •

name different groups and institutions recognise how different groups and institutions have changed explain why particular groups are important give examples of how groups cooperate with each other.

Types of groups and institutions Although we are all individuals, there are many ways in which we are connected with the people and the community around us. One way that we connect with other people is through groups and institutions.

Activity 1 Decide which of the definitions below refers to a ‘group’ and which refers to an ‘institution’ and then match each group to the correct definition: • Can be very informal, include only two or three people and exist just for fun. Members usually have shared interests. • Formal, usually have many members, are important parts of the community. Often have strict rules. family

drama club

universities

prisons

Junior Achievers

Groups and institutions are everywhere. Our school is an educational institution. Within our school institution, groups exist such as our particular class and interest groups such as drama or chess clubs. Our family is a social institution as well as being a social group. This is because there are millions of families around the world and society has been built on families for thousands of years. However, we are all also part of one single family group. Within our community there are different ethnic groups. Some ethnic groups have social clubs where people from the same ethnic group can meet and take part in cultural and religious activities. The church in the Caribbean is an institution as it is so big (84% of people in the Caribbean are Christian). Cultural groups include art groups and sports clubs. Some groups exist to serve a purpose in the community, such as conservation groups and political groups and financial groups such as trade and credit unions. Banks are a type of institution because they have existed for such a long time, have millions of members and exist around the world.

52

Building on the in-text activities, end of unit tests allow formal assessment and recap key topics in each unit before moving on to the next to provide a record of students’ progress. Answers are indicated in the teacher’s guide.

W ha t ha ve yo u le ar nt ? Can I explain the difference between groups and institutions?

Primary / Social Studies

Activity 2 Research the most popular groups and institutions in: a) your class, b) your school, c) your community. Show your findings in a bar chart.

Why groups and institutions are important There are many reasons why groups and institutions are important. Institutions are important in the community for religious, financial, political, educational or cultural reasons. Groups exist for many reasons. Some groups are social, others develop skills or interests and others may help the community in some way. Many groups do all of these things.

Case study Pepper Pot Centre Pansy Jeffrey from Guyana was a co-founder of the Pepper Pot Centre. It started as a drop in centre in 1980, where seniors from the African and Caribbean community in the UK could meet. The centre now provides many services and activities that help elderly people enjoy their culture and live good lives. Young people and people of other cultures are invited to the centre, so that people of different ethnic groups and ages can learn to work together. Questions 1. Is the Pepper Pot Centre a social, political or financial group? 2. How long has the Pepper Pot Centre been running? 3. Name one advantage of the Pepper Pot Centre.

53

Case studies with questions are scattered throughout the books to stimulate discussion and bring each topic to life.

Anansi the Spider Man Philip M. Sherlock Anansi the Spider Man is a legend told by storytellers and parents throughout the world! Anansi was a man and a spider. When things went well he was a man, but when he was in great danger he became a spider, safe in his web high up on the ceiling. By trickery and guile he always got the better of those who were much bigger than he was. As a child growing up in Jamaica, Philip Sherlock listened in the evenings to these West Indian tales, which he now retells with humour and warmth, and illustrator Marcia Brown’s drawings capture the tales’ gaiety and subtlety.

Rescued from the clutches of Mama Dlo, the anaconda who is queen of the rivers, Jabari was given the task of telling people the real story of the flood.

Chapter 12

HISTORY

Practicality means considering the cost, time and sample size needed to collect the data. For example, if you are studying changes in employment in your community it may not be practical to try to interview all adults in the neighbourhood. You can find more on the above in the broader context of doing research in the Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on doing research’ (page 309). Some primary sources are pictured below. You can also find photographs of other primary sources in this book, on pages 146, 151, 170 and 171 (images of Government House, St. Ann’s, by Cazabon, Sir Ralph Woodford’s tomb, Port of Spain Borough Council building, the Black Power Movement protests), and in Chapter 13 in the section on historical sites on pages 219-222.

Did you know? The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago has a collection of primary and secondary source materials. You can find out more about them at: bit.ly/TTnationalarchives.

An invoice for slaves (dated 1835, after emancipation but before the end of slavery) showing the names of and amounts paid for ‘ten negroes’

A French map dated 1650 shows the European view of the Americas at the time. Find Trinidad and Tobago on the map

 Try this! Choose one of the primary sources on page 186 and explain how it would be useful to a historian researching the period or event. Do you think it is a reliable, relevant and practical source? Why or why not?

Checkpoint 1 2 3 4 5 6

What is a primary source? What is a secondary source? What are the four types of primary sources? What do we mean by the relevance of a source? What do we mean by the reliability of a source? What do we mean by the practicality of a source?

Lower Secondary / Social Studies

Look inside Social Sciences: My Self, My World, Second Edition

Thinking creatively and critically 1 Work with a small group. Choose one major historical development in Trinidad and Tobago’s history. Find out more about it using a variety of sources. Keep a careful note of the sources you use – see Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on doing research’ (page 309). Draw a timeline for this historical development. Create a slide show presentation about this historical development for your classmates. See Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on creating and making an electronic presentation on PowerPoint’ (page 320).

2

Work with a partner. Choose one topic or event from Trinidad and Tobago’s history and make a list of the sources you would like to use to investigate it further. Classify your sources as primary and secondary. Discuss which sources you think will be the most relevant, reliable and practical for you to use. Create a chart using coloured annotations to show your proposed sources and identify which you think are likely to be most relevant, reliable and practical.

3

Choose one of the primary sources in this chapter and analyse it carefully to get as much information as possible from it. Consider the following questions. ● What does the primary source depict? ● When was it created? Was it created at the time of what it depicts or later? ● How does what it depicts reflect one or more aspects of the history of Trinidad and Tobago? ● What kinds of research might this primary source be useful for?

12.3 Historical sites and landmarks You looked at some of our most famous and important historical sites and landmarks in Form 1 (e.g. Queen’s Royal College in Port of Spain, the Courland Monument near Great Courland Bay in Tobago).

Documents relating to land ownership are key sources Watch a video about independence, ‘This land of ours’, at bit.ly/TTthisland

Old letters (such as this one, dated 1850) can be very useful to those researching a family’s history

Historical sites and landmarks, you will recall, are buildings or places of importance and value to us as a nation. They are locations where something in history happened or which commemorate historical events. They help us to understand the history and values of our nation and local community, as well as to picture and tell stories about the past.

188

IT-based skills work and links to internet resources are clearly marked for easy integration into lessons

189

Thinking creatively and critically boxes occur regularly throughout each chapter, offering a wide range of activities which help to summarise learning, check comprehension, and encourage critical and creative thinking

The Skills toolkit icon appears throughout the book, encouraging students to use the unique ‘Skills Toolkit’ at the back of the book.

THE FAMILY

INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY AND SOCIETY

member’s basic emotional and psychological needs should be met. Families support each other on a day-to-day basis through encouragement, practical assistance, listening to each other and giving comfort. At times of particular stress, such as during exams or illness, the support of family members is particularly important. As children grow, other sources of acceptance and approval, such as peer groups and romantic relationships, become important. However, the family is the first and most crucial place for emotional needs to be met. When a child grows up, the family they go on to form with a partner goes on to be their main source of identity and emotional support. When children feel secure and accepted within their family, they are more likely to grow up to be emotionally stable, happy and responsible, and to nurture happy children of their own.

SBA: Method of investigation Your SBA will require you to state what method of investigation you use and why. Think about the different ways you could find information and whether your choice of research method is the right one for the task. Children develop their identity and a sense of selfworth, first and foremost, through being part of a family. The family is the primary point at which

CASE STUDY

Everyone at school thinks Maria is lucky. At every party, she is dressed in fashionable clothes, she also has a laptop and the latest phone. But Maria doesn’t feel happy. She appreciates all the things she has and the nice house she lives in, paid for by the money that her parents earn, but, more than the money, Maria wishes that her parents were around more. Maria and her brother are old enough to look after themselves after school until their parents arrive home from work, but their younger sister goes to a babysitter’s after school. Lately, Maria’s sister has been complaining that she can never have friends come by to play after school. Sometimes, when Maria has had a difficult day, she wishes that her mum was around for her to talk to. Often, by the time her parents get home from work, they are tired and busy preparing the evening meal.

CASE STUDY QUESTIONS

2. How well do you feel Maria and Clara’s economic, emotional and psychological needs are being met? Score each area out of ten for each girl. Give one reason for your score.

There are also many different types of family in the Caribbean and around the world. People’s family structures may change at various stages of their life. Modern-day families include:

• reconstructed family – this family unit is the result of two adults with children from previous relationships joining their families together. The children of the two adults become step-siblings and the parents become step-parents to each other’s children. In addition to their children from previous relationships, the adults may have more children together. This type of family requires compromise and a willingness to adapt from all members of the reconstructed family, as well as from blood parents not living within the family unit.

• nuclear families – traditionally, people viewed nuclear families as the ideal child rearing environment. Today, most people recognise that there are many different types of family and each can function effectively. Supporters of the nuclear family argue that a mother and father fulfil different but complementary roles. Traditionally, a mother played more of a nurturing role within the family while the father was often the breadwinner and disciplinarian. Some people believe that the absence of a father in a child’s life, particularly for boys, can negatively impact their development as they lack a close male role model or influence. Others, however, believe that this male influence can be found outside of the family from male relatives, friends or teachers. The most important aspect of any family is that children feel secure and loved.

6

A range of case studies that focus on current Caribbean political, social, cultural and environmental challenges

• sibling households – these are families where both parents are absent. The family is led by older siblings who care for younger members of the family. This family unit is often the result of parents dying or moving away for work or other commitments.

ACTIVITY 1 In small groups, take turns to describe the

members of your family. The rest of the group should identify what type of family structure you live in from the list above. 2 Still in your groups, discuss the advantages

and disadvantages of the different family types. Then, working individually, present these advantages and disadvantages in the form of a table.

CHECK 1. List three major functions of the family. 2. Provide definitions for the following terms: kinship; nuclear family; and siblings.

• extended families – this describes family structures where one or more relatives outside of the nuclear family live together in the household. Extended families may include grandparents,

3. Which family would you rather be a part of? Why?

aunts, uncles, cousins or in-laws (family members connected by marriage). In extended families, there is often more than one authority figure and members share responsibilities.

The family is a social unit connected by blood, marriage or adoption. The family a person is born into is their kinship group. Extended family members can be traced through either the mother’s (matrilineal) or father’s (patrilineal) line. Family members usually live together. The family has a number of important functions within society.

• single-parent families – some children are brought up by one parent. This may be a mother or a father. Single-parent families may be the result of parents separating, a parent dying or a mother choosing to bring up a child alone. Families led by a female parent are said to be matriarchal (or matrifocal) while those with the father as the central authority figure are patriarchal (or patrifocal). Often, children whose parents are divorced split their time between the houses of both parents.

1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Maria and Clara’s family situations?

Maria’s friend, Clara, lives with her mother, sister and two brothers. Clara’s mum works part-time and their dad doesn’t always send the money he’s meant to. Their house is always happy and full of life and Clara likes her mum being around, but she wishes they had more money. It’s hard for Clara to have any time

to herself at home as she has to share her bedroom with her older sister. Clara also can’t afford the extra study books she needs. Often, Clara goes to Maria’s house so that they can do their homework together, using Maria’s study books, without being disturbed.

Macmillan’s Stories to Remember series introduces new readers to famous stories whose quality and entertainment value have stood the test of time. The books are abridged and simplified but as much as possible of the author’s original style and storyline has been retained. They are suitable for non-native speakers of English from lower intermediate level upwards, as well as providing an easy introduction to the great storytellers for young native speakers. These six exciting stories - some funny, some sad - from England’s most beloved playwright, William Shakespeare, have been abridged and simplified by E. F. Dodd. Six exciting stories, some funny, some sad: •

Antonio risks death to help his friend to win the lady he loves (The Merchant of Venice)

Petruchio calms the stormy temper of his beautiful wife (The Taming of the Shrew)

A group of noblemen find wisdom and love on the island of Prospero, the magician (The Tempest)

The noble Brutus agrees to stop the greed and ambition of Julius Caesar by murder (Julius Caesar)

Too late, a proud king recognises which of his daughters truly loves him (King Lear)
