THE DESIGN SCHOOL

INT 465 (Spring 2024)

A new design school for ASU using the Monroe Abbey located in Downtown Phoenix. (Group project completed in Revit with Brittany Whalen and Aubrey Lines).

The challenge of this project was to preserve the existing structure of the building. My team had to get creative as to what spaces fit in existing rooms; ultimately, we decided to reference the historical floor plan to make space planning decisions.

When space planning we were stratigic about what what programatic elemets went in the open spaces. The North and South sides of the building are open to the coutyard so we knew these spaces had to be social to go along with the collaborative nature of the courtyard space (a gallery exhibition). This lead to the material library and open study/collaboration to be on the South side and the makerspace to be on the North.

Using the existing boiler in the basement, we got inspired by its old, vintage look and decided to make a branded cafe around it. This will serve as the school’s main food and beverage source, however there are adjacent restaurants and coffee shops in the nearby area. There is also an elevator that goes down to the basement level so this cafe is ADA accessible.

To preserve the historical architecture of the building, it was important to focus on selecting multi-use furniture rather than building multiple spaces. For our classroom layout, we selected furniture that can easily be reconfigured to allow for multiple uses out of the space. The studio classrooms are divided by a Nanawall System which is a glass partition wall/door so the class can become larger or smaller depending on what is needed at the same.

Since the old roof was destroyed in a fire in 1984, we decided to build a new one. Recreating the existing look, we used The Decker Yeadon Homeostatic Panel System which expands when exposed to heat to keep the internal temperature comfort.

STEELCASE NEXT

INT 464 (Fall 2023)

A workplace project located in Dallas, Texas for an architecture and interior design firm. (Completed using Revit).

Since the floor plan is split into two sides divided by the elevatior, one side is dedicated to social spaces and the other focus work. In order to ensure employees are utilizing both sides of the office, two mezzanines are built which switch the social and working side.

The material pallete is inspired by my concept of the Aurora Art Fair in Dallas where they focus on supporting local small artists by giving them a platform to share there work. The primary colors speak to both the art fair and design.

Mezzanine

The mural that leads towards the training room can be seen from the floor below and acts as a timeline from oldest architecture to current showcasing how design is always changing and evolving. The mural dipicts actual historical monuments from Dallas which is where this project is located. This mural in theory would be designed by a local Dallas artists to relate back to the concept of showcasing local artist’s work.

Custom Fizfelt wall panel can be seen from the material library. It utilizes the senic aspect of Dallas and the Next logo. This is a solution for noise control to mask some of the sound from all the social spaces. The ceiling fixture as seen in the rendering is inspired by the pergola at the Dallas Art District. This is alother solution to tieing the arts concept into the office.

ASHTON THOMAS

Internship at McCarthy Nordburg (August 2023)

Located at Axis Raintree in Scottsdale, Arizona, they were looking for an office space to occupy both companies they own, Ashton Thomas and Amplify.

Renderings Done in Revit - Elevations Done in AutoCAD and Photoshop

This was my second design project completed at McCarthy Nordburg and my first project where I completed a full set of CD’s with the help of Stephanie Petri and David Hobart. This project provided me with practice on some contruction administration work including ASK’s after visiting the job site, how to look over a submittal, and I sat in on “Meeting Miniutes” where each partner on the job gave an update on their part.

To ensure the pendant lighting over the banquet seating did not block the TV’s on the back wall, a study was done in order to propose the correct height the fixtures should hang from. This resulted in careful mesurements and making sure the pendant lights were drawn at the right scale in CAD.

DELTA DENTAL

Internship at McCarthy Nordburg (July 2023)

Located at The Pinnacle in Scottsdale, Arizona this project connects the sharp edges of the building into the design.

The millwork/wall feature in the reception utilizes the design of the Delta Dental logo but abstracts the shape in case the logo were to change in the future. The jagged lines of the design can also be seen as inspiration from the shape of the building

Renderings Done in Revit in collaboration with Sara Taylor

This project was a challenge as this is the first time I built a shell building in Revit. The sharp edges of the exterior posed many challenges espesically for it being my first attempt.

MELANIN ME

INT 362 (Fall 2022)

A makeup flagship retail store located in the Shepley Bulfinch where you can create your own makeup designed for you skin tone and skin type. (Completed using Revit).

The color and material pallet was inspired by the undertones of skin which also corresponds to the name of the brand “Melanin Me”

Logo created in Photoshop

This project was a challenge due to the shape of the building. Instead of being discouraged by the shape, I used it as inspiration and designed custom millwork pieces that are round to match. The retail stands and cafe are a few examples of this as seen below. The back-of-house rooms are placed under the mezzanine to not bring attenion to them along with a stained glass curtain wall to hide those rooms even further.

Make your own makeup station which allows you to customize your products adjusted to your skin type/completion. Behind these stations is vanities which allows you to get your makeup done by professionals and get advide on products and application techniques.

I separated the “experience part” which includes make your own makeup stations, coffee bar, and makeup stations with the retail part of the store to make it easier to get to exactly what you came for. To block off the back of house rooms like the admin office and employee room, I places a glass partition wall to still make the space feel more open and not close it off completely. The glass also matches the stained glass feature on the ceiling of the building.

EARTH OPERATION CENTER

INT 262 (Spring 2022)

An office space using The Beam on Farmer located in Tempe, Arizona designed for the intent of dealing with climate change issues and how to make these issues known. (Group project done in AutoCAD with Rachel Omiecinki and Yongxuan Tan).

Focusing on air pollution and ocean littering, our project incorperates lots of blue tones and natural woods. The operation center incudes each of our groups point of impact rooms which focused on a specific climate change issue. The main feature of this space is the operations center itself featuring multipe LED screens for maximum research to be displayed along with workstation with multiple monitors.

Point of Impact Room

INT 262 (Spring 2022)

Spreading awareness about what’s happening to the coral reefs and why we should care.

I took inspiration from the coral reefs and sea life to piece together a material pallet. I wanted the user to feel as though they are in the ocean as they walk through the space, so by using 3Form Chroma as the ceiling with lights above it could imitate the feeling of being under water.

3Form Ceiling Material

I divided the museum into three sections to represent the cycles of the coral reef. The first part when you enter is “life”. The large aquarium to the side contains touch screen panels with information on how the coral reef helps the ocean and provides so many benifits. The middle section is “transformation” which contains a theater room that would play a video informing guests about how the coral reefs are dying. Finally, the last section is “destruction” as it would represent and show the aftermath of the coral reefs going extinct. I also included a small lounge attacted to the final section of the meusem for guests to discuss how to help save the coral reefs to invoke a call-to-action.
