It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Welcome to Machynlleth Comedy Festival! We’ve got so much to tell you about, so why not grab yourself a pint of real ale or a big cup of tea and take some time to have a read through the jam-packed programme. As well as the usual mighty-fine comedy line-up, we also have a pretty special music programme put together by our friends at Fence Records, some dazzling performances from the incredible Mary Bijou Cabaret, and a fun-filled children and family programme.

There’s a new woodland stage, a gig on a steam train... and one in a sweetshop as well as some special surprises on the weekend itself.

We’ve handpicked some delicious food traders and the Waen Brewery brings us a real ale festival so be sure to sample an awardwinning blackberry stout or two.

Located in the stripy bigtop alongside the ancient beech tree on the lawn of Y Plas. The beech bar stocks a range of local ales, cider and soft drinks. See the ale festival section of the programme to see what John and Sue at the Waen Brewery have planned.

Owain Glyndwr Centre Canolfan Owain Glyndŵr Where it all began! The ancient Welsh parliament building provided the inspiration for holding the festival in beautiful Machynlleth. The hub of the festival since 2010 with two intimate performance spaces, ale bar, picnic area and Bettie’s Lounge. Lle dechreuodd y cyfan! Work-in-Progress Join award-winning sparky stand up Joe Lycett as he workshops material for his second hour show. Expect it to be rough round the edges, interactive, potentially slightly awkward, but most of all BLOODY GOOD FUN. In this one-off show, Isy will perform a live reading of two episodes from her recent BBC Radio 4 series, Isy Suttie’s Love Letters. Combining storytelling, music and stand-up, Isy recounts two love stories which took place in her hometown of Matlock in Derbyshire.

Work-in-Progress An acclaimed writer and stand-up, Holly Walsh, is an established talent in both fields. In 2012 her sitcom, Dead Boss, co-written with Sharon Horgan aired on BBC3. Her stand-up credentials were established with her 2008 Best Newcomer win at the Chortle Awards and confirmed with an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination three years later for her debut Fringe show, Hollycopter. Some Elvis fans can take things too far. Others, like Mike, are satisfied to merely live in a house called Graceland, name their daughter Elli Presley, and spend two years entering every Elvis Presley Tribute Artist competition in the country. But don’t expect a show just about Elvis. There will be lots of other stuff too. But comedy festivals do love a theme. And it was an excuse for Mike to wear a wig in the photo. Rozi Plain was born Rosalind Leyden, in the leafy-greens of Winchester. Since moving to Bristol she’s been working on the ferries that bob in and out of the city, along the Avon, whilst creating her own beautifully intimate music that captures life slowly floating by. R.Seiliog is alias to Robin Edwards, a musician/producer operating from Cardiff, Wales. He was born in the basement of a watchmakers shop in Peniel, North Wales in 1985. This early exposure to the syncopated rhythms of countless different timepieces was to have a lasting effect on the way he hears the world and indeed, composes.

Y Niwl is an instrumental rock band formed in North Wales in 2009. Originally a surf rock band, their style has progressed to incorporate a wider range of influences, though still retaining the instrumental aspect. Y Niwl are Alun Evans (guitar), Siôn Glyn (bass), Gruff ab Arwel (organ/guitar) and Llyr Pari (drums).

Mae Johnny Lynch yn gerddor o’r Alban sy’n perfformio o dan y ffugenw The Pictish Trail. Mae ei albwm newydd, Secret Soundz Vol. 2 yn gymysgedd amryliw o electroneg DIY, gwerin gwyrgam a pop seicadelig.

Life Drawing

Fast becoming a festival favourite. Our first attempt at a festival life drawing class proved so popular last year, that we were compelled to bring it back! About the tutor: Wales based artist Carl Chapple has many years experience and has had exhibitions of his work displayed across the UK, including a solo exhibition here at MoMa in Machynlleth in 2007. About the model: Tom Parry has many years experience exposing himself on-stage as part of the successful sketch group Pappy’s. Always looking to stretch his art he was only too keen to volunteer as the model for this class for a second year running. The class will be tailored to all levels of ability and experience and all materials will be provided. Cream teas will be served at elevenses. Work from the class will be displayed in a festival exhibition.

Come to QUIZ QUEST! Wales’s best multimedia pub quiz extravaganza! Each Quiz Quest has a different theme. Past themes have included Saints, The Colour Red and Now That’s What I Call Music 29. At last year’s Mach festival, the quiz masters did the quiz lying down in a tent. It was draughty and amazing. There were bean bags and grass. This time they’re INSIDE*. The Quiz Quest team have put together a special quiz for the festival, for which the theme is THE MACHYNLLETH COMEDY FESTIVAL.

So if you see someone scribbling furiously at the back of a gig you know why. We’re extremely excited to have Tom at the festival this year. A funfilled, frantic, race against time with prizes for the strongest bridge/most brilliant design and certificates for all competitors. Chicken Challenge - Why did the chicken cross... the bridge?! Work in teams to design and create the most brilliant bridge for Clucky the chicken to get to the other side! John Hegley

The must see family show of the festival. Poet, comedian, musician and songwriter, described as the Spike Milligan for our time. We welcome ‘the people’s poet laureate’ John Hegley and his subversive and surreal poetry to the festival. There is something here to tickle the fancy of both young and old alike. Still the most successful poet on the comedy circuit, Hegley enjoys a cult following and is an ever-popular regular feature on BBC Radio 4.

Body Percussion

This is for parents, kids and anyone who has an interest in making music from your body. Becky spent years touring the world with ‘Stomp’ and picked up a few tricks along the way! With the help of Amy from DrumChasers they will show you how to make awesome sounds just using your bodies, and turn them into a routine (no jazz hands, don’t worry). There will also be basketballs, big bottles and boomwhackers come and find out what they are!

We have two real ale bars located on site. You’ll find the Beech Bar on the lawns of Y Plas and the Pen’Rallt Bar on the lawn at Owain Glyndwr. The bars will host a range of real ales lovingly curated by the local Waen Brewery, as well as local cider, wine, water and juices. See the bars section for full details.

We specialise in massive cakes freshly cooked on site, fabulous evening quiches, homity pies and oven-baked spuds to warm your cockles. FESTIVAL BARS / Bariau’r Wyl The Machynlleth Comedy Festival is extremely proud to have been working in partnership with the Waen Brewery since 2010 to provide high quality local ales to festival attendees. This year as well as providing 4 of their ever-popular beers on pump at both the Owain Glyndwr Centre and Y Plas lawns, they’ve also curated a mini-beer festival incorporating some of their favourite Welsh brewers. Mae Gŵyl Gomedi Machynlleth yn hynod falch o fod wedi bod yn gweithio mewn partneriaeth gyda Bragdy’r Waen ers 2010 i ddarparu cwrw lleol o ansawdd uchel i fynychwyr yr ŵyl. Eleni, yn ogystal â darparu pedwar cwrw hynod boblogaidd ar y pwmp yng Nghanolfan Owain Glyndŵr a lawntiau’r Plas, maent hefyd wedi curadu gŵyl gwrw fach yn cynnwys rhai o’u hoff fragwyr o Gymru.

The Waen Brewery The Waen Brewery is a family run Micro Brewery based less than 20 miles from Machynlleth. In 2010 and 2011 they won Gold and Silver medals for their beers in the SIBA Wales and West Competition and qualified for the National Championships at their first attempt. Their now internationally known Blackberry Stout has been on BBC2, featured in two Beer Writer of the Year winners’ Top 50 Beers in the Publican’s Morning Advertiser and has a page all to itself in Melissa Coles’s recent book, ‘Let me Tell You about Beer’.

Mae Sue wedi casglu pump o’i hoff fragwyr o Gymru ynghyd i chi eu samplu dros benwythnos yr ŵyl. Brecon Brewing

Established in 2011 by Buster Grant, one of Wales’ best known brewers, Brecon Brewing have created a range of beers full of flavour and character inspired by the dramatic locality, working with the local community and reigniting interest in Brecon. Sefydlwyd yn 2011 gan Buster Grant, un o fragwyr mwyaf adnabyddus Cymru, mae Brecon Brewing wedi creu amrywiaeth o gwrw llawn blas a chymeriad a ysbrydolwyd gan yr ardal leol ddramatig, gan weithio gyda’r gymuned leol ac ailgynnau’r diddordeb yn Aberhonddu.

Light in body at 3.8% ABV yet beautifully balanced with distinctive bitter hop at the back of the palette and fruity lift in the finish. Stowt llawn blas a enillodd Fedal Arian SIBA, cwbl afloyw yn y gwydr gyda choler llwydfelen ddeniadol. Tiny Rebel produce both retro and modern beers that are full of rebellion. Brewing is their passion and they experiment and innovate with a purpose, a vision. When we first talked about starting Machynlleth Comedy Festival above of all we wanted to create somewhere where people came to have fun, and get away from it all, whether this be the attendees, the comedians or the festival team. It was all about taking a different approach with an aim of creating a spirit of experimentation and intimacy. We’re passionate about the thrill of seeing live comedy in intimate places, and the glorious, picturesque and enchanting town of Machynlleth gave us a wealth of interesting and unique performance spaces in which to do this. Most of all we want people to laugh, have a great time and find a warm welcome in the heart of Wales. Now in our fourth year the festival is already a firm fixture in many people’s diaries. It would be impossible for the festival to grow and develop without key support from funders and sponsors.

Powys County Council’s tourism department are directly supporting the event in 2013 and we would like to thank Powys County Council for their continued support.

Local tent specialists Roustabout have supported the festival since year one. Thanks to Geoff, Alex and all the crew.

In 2012 the festival gained the support of the Welsh Government’s Major Events Unit (MEU) as a Growth Event. Working with officers from the MEU a three year development strategy was agreed securing the festivals future until 2014 and beyond. Machynlleth Comedy Festival would like to thank the Welsh Government for supporting the development of live comedy in Wales and what we believe is a unique event in the UK comedy calendar.
