ThisOctobermarkedthethirdyearofthe“Do Your Part.#BeCyberSmart”overallthemefortheNationalCybersecurity AwarenessMonth.

Thetheme’smainobjectiveisto chargeindividualusersandorganizationstodotheirpartindefendingtheircyberassets.Witheveryone’s involvement,wecanbettersecureouraccounts, networks, andsystems frommaliciousthreats.

EachweekofthemonthpresentsadifferenttopicstartingwithOctober4,“BeCyberSmart.”

Withalmosteverypartofourlivesconnectedtotechnology, ourdata hasbecomeinvaluable. Inrecentyears, datahasbecomewidelyknown astheworld’smostvaluableresourcesurpassingoil,whichistheprime reasonwhycybercriminalsworktirelesslytogettheirhandsonit.

AccordingtoIBM,the averagecostofadatabreachinthe U.S. isapproximately$4.24million,with20%oftheviolationscausedbycompromisedcredentials.

To keepourinformationsafe, wemustusethebestsecuritypractices ineveryaspectofcyber, includingstrongpasswords, multi-factorauthentication,databackupsandsoftwareupdates.

Whenitcomestoouraccountpasswords, itismostofthetimenot thestrengthofthepasswordsthatleadtoaccountcompromise, butthe frequencythataparticularpasswordisused.

Inastudy, Googlefoundthatmorethan65percentofpeopleusethe samepasswordacrossmultipleaccounts, ifnotall,sitesrequiringone.

AccordingtoMattausch,theAFGSCStrikerPhoenixprogram wascreatedin2019to supporttheprofessionaldevelopmentofnuclearoperationscompanygradeofficersto preparethemforfutureleadershipassignments.

Thepreviousweek’stopicseguesperfectly intoweektwo’stheme, “FightthePhish,” alludingtothemostprominentattackvector duringtheCOVID-19pandemic.

Justaspasswordsusedtokeepothersfrom accessingourinformation,cybercriminalshave found clever waystomanipulateindividuals, trickingthemintounknowinglycompromising theirpersonalinformationtothem.

Withmostoftheworldworkingvirtually fromhome, cybercriminalshaveadditionalopportunitiestotargetindividuals, ultimately raisingthenumberofphishingincidentsby morethan220%.

TheFBI’sInternetCrimeComplaintCenterreportedmorethan$54million waslostto phishingattacksduring2020.
