Spirit of Survival Bright and early at 7:00am on Sunday, October 6th, Key Club gathered at the corner of Cache and 47th to await the arrival of the runners participating in the Spirit of Survival Race! Spirit of Survival raises money for the cancer centers of Southwest Oklahoma. This year celebrates 14 years of the event. Spirit of Survival has become one of the largest tourist attractions in Lawton, Oklahoma and draws in many people from all different communities to come together to fight cancer. The first day of the event is a bike race with option of 62M, 52M, 26M, and a family 13M race. The second day is the running. There is a half marathon, quarter marathon, a 5K, and a 1M spirit walk. MacArthur Key Club supported the runners of the half marathon by gathering along part of the route to cheer them on. There were also a few other clubs that joined the fun. MacArthur Highlanderettes, Cheer, and some band members came out and did an amazing job to motivate the amazing runners. There were bam bams, awesome signs, bubble gum, and lots of noise cheering everyone on. Music was played, and cheer and highlanderettes had some great moves. Seeing the smiles from all the people running by made Key Club feel like they were making a difference, and they were! All the runners loved the support, and it helped give them that extra boost of motivation to just keep running! Overall, Spirit of Survival was an amazing event with even more amazing runners! Key Club can not wait to do it all again next year.

Mattie Beal Birthday Bash

September 14th was the Mattie Beal Birthday Bash. “In the land lottery of 1901, in which the federal government opened southwest Oklahoma for settlement, the second name drawn was that of Mattie Beal.” The young woman got to choose her 160 acre land allotment south of the Lawton town site. Mattie Beal instantly became famous and later married Charles Payne in 1902. Martha “Mattie” Beal had a very generous spirit. She commuted her property, so that settlers who had failed to acquire a townsite lot could purchase affordable homesites and remain in the area. She also donated land for two parks, a school, and a church and always wanted to promote culture in the city. Mattie died in 1931 and eight years later, Charles. The home since them has been used for wartime housing during World War II and after, a place of neglect and vandalism. The Lawton Heritage Association raised funds to buy and restore the Mattie Beal Home, and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For the birthday bash, Key Club helped out with setting up games and fun activities for children to enjoy. Many people came to join the fun. There were snow cones and even some people selling their own products, such as bath bombs and cute, wooden signs. The atmosphere was jovial and everyone enjoyed celebrating Mattie Beal and her home. Key Club had so much fun getting involved in the community.

Lego Building Contest A Lego building contest took place Saturday, September 21st in the MHS library. Key Club was in charge and did a great job setting up and helping out. Kids came out and had lots of fun building Lego. There were all sorts of great creations, and the Key Clubbers got to be the judges. There were super awesome prize baskets, and some children even won Lego sets of their own! Everyone had a great time at this event, and the kids really appreciate Key Club for putting together such fun events for them to enjoy.
