Out of All the Organization Your High School May Offer, Why Did You Choose Key Club? By Kendall Leney Out of all of the clubs at MHS, I chose to join Key Club because joining the organization would give me the most opportunities for my future and on top of that I could help people at the same time. Key Club had always been a club that i wanted to join since it was always talked about so highly all throughout my school career. I would always hear from high schoolers to join Key Club and my family always encouraged me as well. I had joined all with my friends so it was an easy transition into the club and it gave all of us something to do together. Key club gives us opportunities for service hours and it looks good when applying for college applications. You can also earn scholarships from doing service projects. Those were my initial thoughts when ultimately deciding to join. Later on even when I was busy, I continued to renew my membership in the club because I enjoy helping others and being around the people I love while doing it.

What are your Key Club's New Year's resolutions? By Kendall Leney

07

My Key Club New Year's resolutions are to get more service hours, be more active within the club activities, and to encourage other people to join next year and the years to come. This year I definitely plan on taking part in more service projects than I ever have before. A lot of the time, I find myself slacking off when I know there are service projects going on. If I find someone to keep me accountable, I know it will help me in the long run. Serving gives me something to do rather than staying home and doing nothing. When it comes to being active in the club functions I can improve on that and be sure to make everything I possibly can. Time management is KEY for this year! Key Club is one of the larger clubs at MHS but who says it can’t get bigger? Joining Key Club does no harm and can be very good for yourself and others. I want to encourage more people to join Key Club because it gives so many people an outlet all while being surrounded by people who love service and being with others. Key Club has an amazing support system whether it’s the members, officers, or sponsors. I hope to accomplish all of these things this year and carry them on into the next.

How are you/your club planning to start the new year? By Mackenzie Thomas Hi! My name is Mackenzie Thomas and I am the President of MacArthur Key Club. As the leader of this amazing service group, I wanted to make it my personal priority to seek out some new volunteer opportunities and more often! Despite the pandemic closing down so many options we have had previously, I felt like we were relying too much on donation drives rather than getting out into the community and making a real difference. I gain my love for Key Club by going out, rolling my sleeves up, and putting in some elbow grease into the work we are doing in order to make a positive change in the Lawton/Fort-Sill area. I talked to a local food bank to schedule a day where we would be able to help out in any way, including making phone calls, handling paperwork, taking out the trash, and organizing thousands of donated food items. We cleaned up our adopted street, 45th Street, again, despite the cold and rainy weather. We even have plans to go help out at an animal shelter in February, which was organized by our current historian, Gracie Cunningham, who has plans of running for the Presidency position this year. Whatever 2021 may bring our way, MacArthur Key Club will always find a way to serve. It is our mission and joy to help people, clean up our city, and just make someone's life a little bit easier in any way we can. My hope, with officer elections coming up, is that I will be able to guide, train, and motivate current members to get more involved and to become excited about passing on the torch of service to the next generations. It is important that we instill the values of kindness and service in everyone, young and old, to make the world an overall better place.

Looking back on 2020, what was your most memorable moment of service? By Kamdyn McAllister

09

My most memorable moment of service in 2020 had to be the Serve Day Car Wash we did. Our Key Club met with a lot of other service groups at a local church, Lawton First Assembly, to start the day. Every group had their own service project for the day. Once we figured out where we were supposed to go and what we were supposed to do, we went to where our service project was located, in Cache Road Square - with plenty of stores and restaurants to attract people to the area. Once we arrived, we made sure everything was set up and that everyone had a job. There was "rinser," scrubber," "dryer," and "advertiser." I was assigned to be "dryer." At first, there was not a lot of people eager to take us up on our offer of a "FREE Carwash." We all played a couple of games for fun while we waited - which was a great way to spend some quality time with each other. Then, one car pulled up. Then another. Soon, there were plenty of cars for us to wash. We got to work. There were so many people on our team (some other service groups), we were very efficient. After being "dryer" for a bit, I went to "advertiser," where we screamed at the top of our lungs and danced like maniacs (or maybe that was just me haha). Either way, the news got out there, and people were rolling in. After being "advertiser" for a little bit, I went to help as a "scrubber." We were finishing up on all the cars - we even washed a motorcycle. I know that people were definitely glad to have their car washed for free. It was so much fun, and another reminder of why service can be so fun and touching because seeing others happy is the real reason why we do it.

What has Key Club taught you? By Kamdyn McAllister I have been in Key Club for all three of my high school years so far. From the beginning, I was super excited to be able to be part of a club that just serves people with plenty of options of events to choose from and opportunities at no cost, just your time. I started going to these events and serving others, and it made my heart happy. At first, I felt like I was a bit shy and nervous to go to events. I told myself maybe I was not needed at some events or it would not matter if I went, but I am learning that could not be further from the truth. There can always be more helping hands - even just being at a service event to keep others company so they are not lonely. I have learned that even when the world seems dark, you can be a little spark that starts a whole fire. People do not realize how big of a difference one of us can make. For instance, Key Club's President, Mackenzie Thomas knew about my situation with my grandma moving into a nursing home and my sister leaving for college and everything hard that was going on in my life all during Covid, and she decided to get me a little gift basket and card just to show that she was thinking about me and she cared. That really touched me and helped through the hard times. I ended up paying it forward and getting my friend a little gift basket and card when I heard her papa had passed away. That was one person who did something special, and it affected two more people who went and affected their families who affected more people. One person can make a difference. It's people like Mackenzie - a lot of Key Clubbers - that start a spark. Some may think we're just getting hours or updating our resume, but we're changing lives, and I'm all for that - even if it starts or ends with one.
