On April 24, 2021 MacArthur Key Clubbers participated in the Garden Party and Cameron University’s community garden. The fruits and vegetables planted will go toward Hungry Hearts Feeding Ministry( A nonprofit organization that provides weekly meals to 200+ people in the Lawton community). At 10am 6 Key Clubbers and both sponsors started to plant all of the different plants that were provided. This included potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, strawberries, and even some flowers to attract beautiful birds and butterflies. They spent about an hour and a half planting the plants as well as doing other gardening tasks. This event was also a learning experience for many of the key clubbers. Many of them have never planted anything before or understood things like how far to place plants away from each other, or that coffee is a natural fertilizer. Many of the Key Clubbers got down and dirty in the mud and dirt to insure that all of the plants were planted in a way that they would grow beautifully as well as healthily. They really enjoyed the service and being able to provide something with life. Hungry Hearts is held near and dear to many of our Key Clubbers' hearts because they are local and provide food to many of our friends and family in the community. This event meant a lot to the whole community. KSWO News came out to catch clips of how amazing planting truly is. President Gracie Cunningham even got interviewed about why Key Club chose to volunteer at this extraordinary event. Overall, this was an amazing event that was Covid friendly as well as full of physical service. Everyone who participated had fun and learned a lot of life skills for the future. The Key Clubbers even got to take a few plants home for their personal garden as well. The Garden Party was a fantastic event.
