RETRO FUERTEVENTURA: ROCK’N ROLL BAR EN CORRALEJO
Pablo y Billie se conocieron hace años trabajando como personal del Retro Fuerteventura. Cuando estaban decididos a coger un local para regentarlo, ya que trabajaban muy bien en pareja, el antiguo propietario del Retro Fuer Fuerteventura les ofreció la posibilidad de comprarlo, y ahí se lanzaron, a la aventura más grande de sus vidas, que no ha hecho más que empezar. Macaronesia: ¿Qué se respira en Retro Fuerteventura? Pablo y Billie: Puro Rock’n Roll. Estamos enamorados de la música de los años 50’s, 60’s, 70’s y 80’s; música que siempre trae buenos recuerdos y que nos hace trabajar con una energía muy especial. Quien nos visita viene a pasar la velada, comiendo buena carne, bebiendo ricas cervezas, sidras y cócteles, mientras disfrutan de esta música tan emblemática que a todos los que tenemos esta pasión nos encanta. M: Entonces, es muy importante el papel de los músicos de Retro Fuerteventura… P y B: Por supuesto. Los clientes vienen buscando esa música en vivo tan especial. Tenemos una banda formada por Peter, Pablo y Trevor, que suelen actuar todos los viernes, un dúo formado por Alan y Bistra, y otros músicos como Wendy, que se encargan de movernos a todos con sus acordes, con los covers de los mejores grupos, haciendo un espectáculo increíble y animando la velada de los clientes. M: ¿Y qué nos contáis de la comida? P y B: Tenemos desayuno inglés desde primera hora de la mañana, con riquísimas tartas caseras de zanahoria, de manzana y cheescake. También tenemos una línea de café frozen, que es café helado batido y mezclado con licor de vainilla, chocolate, menta, coco... Y para el almuerzo y la cena, hamburguesas, solomillos, costillas… Todo de
carne argentina o uruguaya, de primerísima calidad. Entre nuestras bebidas destacan las cervezas (Dorada, Peroni, Carlsberg y Guinness), sidras (Strongbow, Kopparberg y Magners), y una variada carta de coctelería, otra de las pasiones de Pablo, que es barman profesional. M: Los conciertos son por la noche, ¿qué ofrecéis el resto del día? P y B: Tenemos 4 pantallas, donde retransmitimos partidos de fútbol: dos partidos diferentes a la vez; y de 15h a 16h tenemos happy hour en cerveza y Strongbow. M: Lo mejor de Retro Fuerteventura es… P y B: Pues a parte de la música y la comida, como ya hemos dicho, sin duda lo mejor de Retro es nuestro equipo, que es espectacular: joven, con mucha energía y mucho mimo hacia nuestros clientes, que son otra de las cosas buenas de Retro Fuerteventura, ya que ayudan a crear ese ambiente tan especial que se respira en el bar. Muchos de ellos son como una familia para nosotros, vuelven a vernos cada vez que vienen a la isla, nos llaman desde sus países, y muchas veces nos traen hasta regalos. Así que ya sabéis: si os apasiona el rock, queréis comer buena carne y saborear deliciosos cócteles, en Retro Fuerteventura os estarán esperando.

Pablo and Billie met some years ago working as staff of Retro Fuerteventura. When they were determined to get a local to manage it, working very well as a couple, the former owner of Retro Fuerteventura offered the opportunity to buy it, and that way they launched the biggest adventure of their lives, which has only just started. Macaronesia: What can we listen to in Retro Fuerteventura? Pablo & Billie.: Pure Rock’n Roll. We are in love with the music of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s; music that always brings good memories and makes us work with a very special energy. Our visitors come to spend the evening eating good meat, drinking nice beer, cider and cocktails, while enjoying this so emblematic music that all those who have this passion love. M: So, musicians play a very important role in Retro Fuerteventura ... P & B: Of course. Customers are looking for such special live music. We have a band formed by Peter, Pablo and Trevor, who usually perform every Friday, a duo made up by Alan and Bistra, and other musicians like Wendy, who makes everybody dance to their music, playing covers of the best groups, making an incredible show and livening up the customers’ evening. M: And what about the meals? P & B:: We have English breakfast from early morning, with delicious cheese cakes, apple pies and carrot cakes. We also have frozen coffee, which is blended iced coffee mixed with vanilla, chocolate, mint, coconut ...liquors. And for lunch and dinner there are burgers, steaks, ribs ... All top quality Argentinian or Uruguayan meat. Among our drinks we highlight beers (Golden, Peroni, Carlsberg and Guinness), cider (Strongbow, Kopparberg and Magners), and a varied menu of cocktails, another passion of Pablo’s, who is a professional bartender. M: The concerts are in the evening, what do you offer the rest of the day? P & B:: We have 4 screens, where we broadcast football matches: two different games at once; and from 3pm to 4pm we have happy hour of beer and Strongbow. M: The Best of Retro Fuerteventura is ... P & B:: Apart from the music and food, as we have already said, certainly the best of Retro is our team, who are spectacular: young, energetic and caring a lot for our customers. Also a big thank you to our customers who help Retro Fuerteventura create that special atmosphere that permeates the bar. Many of them are like family to us, visit us again every time they come to the island, they call us from their countries and often they even bring us gifts. MANU MIGUÉLEZ
Edad 34 • Procedencia: Asturias A Manu, la pasión por el mar le asomaba desde niño, y con 12 años empezó a surfear en su playa local, Salinas, en un comienzo mágico, como el que asegura tuvieron casi todos los surfers de esa época. Con tablas viejas, amarillas y afiladas, neoprenos prestados y nada de internet, fotógrafos, escuelas, entrenadores o video corrección; fijándose solo en los mayores de su playa, asimilando un localismo duro y ganándose el sitio en el pico a fuerza de experiencia y respeto. Como él dice «surf de verdad». .6
Macaronesia: ¿Cuándo empiezas a viajar para surfear? Manu: Cuando el dinero me lo permitió. De aquella lo raro era que tus padres surfearan o te apoyaran en lo que se definía como una moda hippy y de drogadictos, por lo tanto, hasta que no empezabas a trabajar no podías viajar o comprar material decente M: Eres fotógrafo acuático y guía de surf, ¿cuéntanos cómo llegas a cumplir este sueño? Manu: Las olas buenas me hacen perder la cabeza, odio surfear olas malas, quizás porque no sé hacerlo. Y bueno, viajando por Indo conocí Mentawai, me enamoré de tanta perfección, pasé un montón de tiempo allí en tierra, recorriéndolo, conviviendo, aprendiendo... Un día, sin esperármelo, me ofrecieron trabajar de guía en un resort; no me lo pensé, volví a España, solté amarras y me planté en Mentawai, en lo que fue una locura muy bonita, una etapa irrepetible. Meses después, conocí a los propietarios de los King Milleniums (barcos que organizan boat trips de surf en Mentawai) y empecé con ellos. M: ¿Hay otra vida detrás de los tubos de ensueño de Mentawai? Manu: Me gusta mucho el surf, y por ello lo practico en todo tipo de condiciones, pero sí es verdad que de vez en cuando tengo auténticos bajones si las condiciones no ayudan. Hay gente que seguramente piense que exagero cuando hablo de la perfección y consistencia en Mentawai, pero es posiblemente el mejor lugar del mundo para surfear. Recuerdo mi primera vez aquí en Canarias después de 11 meses en Mentawai, fue horrible, jajaja… No podía surfear, ¡solo bebía tropical! M: ¿Cómo se vive el ver tantas sonrisas de surfistas cumpliendo sus sueños en esos viajes? ¿Qué es lo que más te satisface de este trabajo? ¿Y lo que menos? Manu: Las sonrisas son el resultado de un trabajo bien hecho, por lo que son muy gratificantes. Sin duda, lo que más me satisface es clavar un trip, el clásico «right time right place», hacer una lectura perfecta del forecast, un planning perfecto, anticiparse a los movimientos de los otros barcos o resorts, dejar a los clientes con la boca abierta, prediciendo cambios climatológicos que solo los que tenemos esa experiencia podemos predecir, etc. La peor parte es en la que te conviertes en psicólogo y atiendes frustraciones, cuando tienes que explicar a supuestos
surfers que yo no invento el forecast y que me adapto a lo que la madre natura nos manda. M: ¿Cuándo llegaste por primera vez a Fuerteventura? Manu: Noviembre de 2014. Estaba en Lanzarote, visitando a mi hermano, recién llegado de Indonesia después de 11 meses. Hacía un frío horrible, nada de olas, y Alejandro de Heer (mi hermano aquí), al que había conocido en Mentawai en mayo, me invitó a su casa una semana. ¡Me quedé casi 3 meses! Desde entonces voy y vengo, intentando estar aquí el mayor tiempo posible, sobre todo en invierno. M: Si pusieras en una balanza tu pasión por el surf y por la fotografía acuática, ¿hacia dónde se inclinaría? Manu: Surf siempre, si llego a una ola en condiciones perfectas y veo posibilidad de hincharme a tubos, no hago fotos ni loco; pero si hay 30 tíos y no estoy en mi casa, prefiero hacer fotos. M: ¿Quiénes han sido tus guías en estas dos pasiones? Manu: Mis amigos son mis surfers favoritos, mis ídolos. En Mentawai empecé solo y sin ayuda alguna. Luego conocí a David Valladares y Poto; con ellos aprendí la realidad de Indonesia, un montón sobre surf y sobre la vida. A nivel fotografía, Guillermo Álvarez me enseñó la poca técnica que sé, y Diogo d’Orey me dio, y sigue dando a día de hoy, la calle necesaria para hacerte valer e intentar luchar por lo tuyo. M: Algo más que quieras decir… Manu: Gracias a vosotros por darme este pequeño espacio y a todos los locales por dejarme disfrutar de su particular paraíso.

He has felt the passion for the sea since he was a child, and at age 12 he began surfing at his local beach, Salinas, in a magical start, such as the one he assures almost all surfers of the time had. They had old, yellow and edged boards, borrowed wetsuits and no internet, photographers, schools, coaches or video corrections; They could only watch experienced surfers in their beach, learning a hard «localism» and gaining a place at the peak by dint of experience and respect. As he says, «real surf.» Macaronesia: When did you start travelling to surf? Manu: When I could afford it. Then, it was strange that your parents surfed or supported you in what was defined as a hippie or dug addict fashion; therefore, not until you worked could you travel or buy decent equipment. M: You are a water surf photographer and a surfer guide, tell us how you get to fulfil this dream? Manu: Good waves drive me crazy, I hate surfing bad waves, perhaps because I don’t know how to. Well, travelling around Indo I met Mentawai, I fell in love with such perfection, I spent a long time there, crossing its land, living, learning ... One day, unexpectedly, I was offered a job as a guide at a resort; I did not think twice, I returned to Spain, broke ties and settled in Mentawai, to live what was a blessed madness, a unique stage. Some months later, I met the owners of the King Milleniums (boats that organize boat surf trips in Mentawai) and I started with them.
M: Is there another life behind the dream tubes in Mentawai? Manu: I really like surf, and so I practise in all conditions, but it is true that occasionally I feel down if conditions don’t help. Some people probably think I’m exaggerating when I speak of perfection and consistency in Mentawai, but this is possibly the best place in the world to surf. I remember my first time here in the Canary Islands after 11 months in Mentawai. It was horrible, lol ... I could not surf, just drink tropical water! M: How is the experience of seeing so many smiles of surfers fulfilling their dreams on these trips? What satisfies you most about this job? And the least? Manu: The smiles are the result of a good job, so they are very rewarding. No doubt, what most satisfies me is to make the perfect trip, the classic «right time right place», make a perfect reading of the forecast, a perfect planning, to anticipate the movements of other ships or resorts, leaving customers with their mouths wide open, predicting climate changes that just the ones who have this experience can predict, etc. The worst part is where you become a psychologist and you listen to frustrations, when you have to explain to alleged surfers that I do not invent the forecast and I adapt to what Mother Nature sends us.
M: When did you first come to Fuerteventura? Manu: November 2014. I was in Lanzarote, visiting my brother, who had just returned from Indonesia after 11 months. It was terribly cold, no waves, and Alejandro de Heer (my brother here), whom I had met in Mentawai in May, invited me to his home for a week. I stayed almost 3 months! Since then I split my time between here and there, trying to stay as long as possible, especially in winter. M: If you put in a scale your passion for surfing and underwater photography, where would it tip? Manu: Always surf, if I get to a wave in perfect conditions and I see the possibility of enjoying plenty of tubes I would not think of taking pictures; but if there are 30 guys and I’m not at home, I prefer to take pictures. M: Who have been your instructors on these two passions? Manu: My friends are my favourite surfers, my idols. In Mentawai I started on my own and with nobody’s help. Then I met David Valladares and Poto; with them I learnt the reality of Indonesia, plenty of surf and life. Regarding photography, Guillermo Alvarez taught me the little technique I know, and Diogo d’Orey gave me, and keeps giving me nowadays, the necessary lessons to assert yourself and try to fight for what you want. M: Anything else you want to say ... Manu: Thank you for giving me this small space and all the locals for letting me enjoy their own paradise.

THE SKY IN JUNE

EL CIELO EN JUNIO En este mes de junio, el cielo nocturno está protagonizado por el Sistema Solar. El gran planeta Júpiter brilla muy alto en la constelación de Leo y sigue siendo la “estrella” más luminosa del firmamento. Pero, desde el Este, otro astro nos llama la atención por su marcado color rojo: es el planeta Marte, cercano a la estrella Antares —también roja— en la cabeza del Escorpión. Muy cerca de allí asoma otro huésped muy famoso: Saturno, el «Señor de los Anillos», con This month is all about planet watching! su característico color amarillento. No podemos perdernos la ocasión de admirar con el telescopio estos tres planetas, los más interesantes y populares del cielo nocturno, ahora que tenemos la suerte de que se nos muestren todos juntos a principios de la noche. Y para completar este gran espectáculo, la segunda y la tercera semana del mes está presente la Luna, que con sus mares y sus cráteres proporciona un increíble contraste con los anillos de Saturno y las bandas de Júpiter. Para terminar, no hay que olvidar que el 30 de junio es el Día Internacional de los Asteroides, que nos recuerda que siempre hay peligros que nos acechan desde el espacio y su seguimiento es fundamental para prevenirlos. ¡Cielos despejados para todos! The big planet Jupiter, the brightest “star” of the night, shines very high in the constellation of Leo, while from the East, a new brilliant object is rising with its characteristic reddish glare: it is Mars, close to the star Antares in Scorpio. By the middle of the month, the Moon is also present, offering us with its seas and craters an unbelievable contrast to Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s bands. And do not forget that the 30th of June is the International Day of the Asteroids, reminding us that there are always dangers lurking in space and that research is essential in order to prevent them. POSTURA DE YOGA DEL MES: UTKATASANA ¿RODILLAS DÉBILES? FORTALECE LAS PIERNAS
UTKATASANA: «Postura potente» Por Agustina Cadel, profesora de Hatha yoga y Filosofía Vedanta
BENEFICIOS: Es una excelente postura para fortalecer la musculatura de las piernas, en especial, cuádriceps, tibiales, aductores y glúteos. Cuando fortaleces las piernas, alivias el exceso de carga en las rodillas. Con esta postura, además, ganarás elasticidad en los tobillos (y hombros) y tonificas el abdomen y la espalda. También, con la práctica habitual de esta postura, aumenta la capacidad respiratoria. EJECUCIÓN: Comienza de pie, con las plantas de los pies bien apoyadas sobre el suelo. Los pies, los tobillos y las rodillas se tocan entre sí. A continuación, inhalando, levanta los brazos hasta la línea de las orejas, juntando las palmas de las manos y entrelazando los pulgares. Mientras exhalas, flexiona las rodillas, como si quisieras sentarte en una silla y, al hacerlo, vigila que las rodillas no se separen y que la zona lumbar no se curve. Permanece en la postura de 10 a 20 respiraciones profundas, de acuerdo con la intensidad de práctica deseada. En la última inhalación, estira las piernas, y exhalando baja los brazos con un movimiento lateral. Weak knees? Strengthen your legs
YOGA POSE OF THE MONTH: UTKATASANA

BENEFITS: This is an excellent pose to strengthen leg muscles, especially quadriceps, tibial, abductors and gluteus. When you strengthen your legs, you ease the pressure on your knee. With this pose you’ll also gain elasticity in your ankles (and shoulders), toning up your belly and back. Also, with the usual practice of this pose, your breathing capacity will increase. EXECUTION: Start standing, with the plants of your feet resting on the ground. Feet,
ankles and knees must rub against one another. Then inhale, raise your arms to the line of your ears, clasping palms and intertwining your thumbs. As you exhale, bend your knees as if you wanted to sit in a chair and, in doing so, watch your knees do not separate and the lower back is not bent. Remain in this pose 10 to 20 deep breaths, depending on the desired intensity of practice. In the last inhalation, stretch your legs, and when exhaling, lower your arms with a sideways movement.

Las épocas de crisis agudizan el ingenio y nos hacen crear proyectos personales interesantes, que nos marcan un camino profesional en la vida. Este es el caso de Vicky y David, una pareja galaico-venezolana, residentes en Fuerteventura desde hace más de 10 años, apasionados del deporte, que decidieron arriesgar y montar una tienda de bicicletas, que hoy en día es ya todo un bikecenter de referencia en la isla de Fuerteventura. Macaronesia: ¿Cómo os surge esta idea? David: Desde mi niñez estuve ligado al mundo de las ventas, a través de un negocio familiar, y Vicky había trabajado toda la vida en tiendas. Casualmente, en el año 2010 me fracturé una pierna surfeando en la costa Norte. Tras ese accidente, decidí comprar una bicicleta para recuperar la fuerza muscular y así, sin darme cuenta, me reenganché al mundo de la bici. Pasado un tiempo comencé a practicar MTB, Triatlón, travesías en aguas abiertas, hasta que un día, volviendo de un triatlón de Lanzarote, nos surgió la idea de emprender un negocio de venta y alquiler de bicicletas. Ya llevamos 4 años y los que nos quedan… M: ¿Cuál es la filosofía de Life Cycles? D: Ofrecer un producto de calidad y diferenciarnos del resto de empresas del sector, con trabajo duro, esfuerzo y dedicación. Somos un negocio pequeño que ha conseguido hacer grandes cosas, y nuestro objetivo es mejorar día a día para poder ofrecerle a nuestros clientes el mejor trato personalizado que puedan encontrar. M: ¿Qué marcas trabajáis? D: Trabajamos la marca Scott, de la que somos distribuidores exclusivos para Fuerteventura. Gracias a la profesionalidad de esta marca podemos ofrecer un servicio de mucha cali-
dad, pudiendo llegar a ofrecer cualquier bicicleta, aunque no la tengamos en stock en la tienda, en un plazo de 3 a 4 días hábiles. Esto es algo muy valorado en esta isla, donde los plazos de entrega de mercancía proveniente de la península ronda el mes. Adicionalmente trabajamos Shimano, Sram, Mavic, Northwave y muchas otras. M: Tenéis venta y alquiler de bicicletas , ¿de qué tipos? D: En lo que se refiere a venta, tenemos todo el catálogo de Scott, y ofrecemos una financiación a 15 meses sin intereses. En alquiler tenemos un servicio bastante completo: bicicletas de niño, de paseo, híbridas, bicis de montaña en diferentes gamas y modalidades, desde bicicletas básicas, para dar un paseo relajado, hasta bicicletas de uso intensivo; también tenemos bicis de carretera. A partir del mes de julio tendremos también bicicletas eléctricas, con pedaleo asistido: el futuro de la bicicleta. M: ¿Qué otros servicios encontramos en Life Cycles? D: Tenemos un taller especializado multimarca. Vendemos todo tipo de accesorios, cubiertas, ruedas, recambios, textil con gran surtido de tallas, zapatillas específicas, tanto de carretera como de montaña, guantes, calcetines, cascos, mochilas de hidratación, suplementación deportiva… M: ¿Realizáis excursiones guiadas? D: Sí, ofrecemos excursiones guiadas enfocadas generalmente al turista. Son excursiones bajo reserva y en grupo mínimo de 4 personas. Tenemos diferentes niveles de intensidad y tenemos en cuenta la preparación de cada persona. Times of crisis call for ingenuity and make us create interesting personal projects that mark a professional path in life. This is the case of Vicky and David, one Galician-Venezuelan couple, residents in Fuerteventura for over 10 years, sports fans, who decided to risk and set up a bike shop, which today is already a benchmark bike centre on the island of Fuerteventura. Macaronesia: How did this idea come up? David: I have been related to the world of sales since I was a child, through a family business, and Vicky had worked all her life in shops. Coincidentally, in 2010 I broke my leg surfing on the north coast. After that accident, I decided to buy a bike to regain muscle strength and that way, without realizing it, I took up the bike again. After a while I started practising MTB, triathlon, open water crossings, until one day, returning from a triathlon in Lanzarote, we had the idea to start a business of selling and renting bicycles. We have been doing that for four years and there are still lots of them ahead of us... M: What is the philosophy of Life Cycles? D: To provide a quality product and make a difference regarding other companies in the sector, with hard work, effort and dedication. We are a small business that has managed to do great things, and our goal is to improve every day to offer our customers the best personalized service they can find. M: What brands do you work with? D: We work with Scott brand, for which we are exclusive distributors in Fuerteventura. Thanks to the professionalism of this brand we can offer a high quality service, being able to offer any bike, even if we don’t have it in stock, within three to four working days. This is something very valued on this island, where the delivery date of goods from the peninsula is around one month after order. We also work with Shimano, Sram, Mavic, Northwave and many others. M: You have sale and rental of bicycles, what types? D: In regards to sales, we have the entire Scott catalogue, and provide funding up to 15 months without interest. For rent we have a fairly complete service: child, stroll, hybrid and mountain bikes in different ranges and types, from basic bicycles for a relaxed ride, to intensive use bicycles; we also have road bikes. From July we will also have electric bicycles with assisted pedalling: the future of cycling. M: What other services can we find in Life Cycles? D: We have a specialized multi brand garage. We sell all kinds of accessories, tires, wheels, spare parts, textiles with large assortment of sizes, specific brake pads, for both road and mountain bikes, gloves, socks, helmets, hydration backpacks, sport supplements ... M: Do you carry out guided tours? D: Yes, we offer guided tours usually focused on tourists. They are subject to reservation for a minimum of 4 people. We have different levels of intensity and we consider the physical condition of each person. SEMILLAS AL VIENTO otra forma de aprender es posible En la localidad de Lajares, en octubre del pasado año, comenzaba a caminar la Asociación socioeducativa sin ánimo de lucro «Semillas al Viento», constituida por padres, profesionales de la enseñanza y algunos voluntarios, que pretenden instaurar en la isla una nueva forma de educación, basada en el reconocimiento y desarrollo de las inteligencias múltiples, en entender y respetar el ritmo de desarrollo de cada niño, y en ayudar a comprender y gestionar la parte emocional de los pequeños, sobre todo en los primeros años de su desarrollo. Hablamos con Brenda Andreoni Kunz, artífice de este proyecto, que nos explica los objetivos de esta asociación. Macaronesia: ¿Cómo surge esta idea? Brenda: Todo empezó por el profundo deseo de poder llevar a mis dos hijas a una escuela de pedagogía alternativa, que se adaptara más a sus necesidades individuales, y que ofreciera un espacio respetuoso y sobre todo con una enseñanza «para la vida», transmitida desde el amor. Un verano decidí montar en casa un campamento de verano, donde poder aliviarles del estrés que sufrían durante el año en la escuela. En el campamento desarrollamos, sobre todo, su parte creativa, fomentando
la libre expresión… La experiencia fue tan positiva que entre todas las familias nos planteamos la idea de hacer algo continuado a lo largo del año, y así nace Semillas al Viento. M: ¿Cuáles son los objetivos de esta asociación? B: Partimos de la idea de que si la parte emocional del niño está equilibrada y atendida, si se siente escuchado y respetado, el aprendizaje fluye y es mucho más fácil de integrar. Por eso pretendemos crear un espacio de armonía, donde desarrollamos las inteligencias múltiples, es decir, no solo prestamos atención a la lectoescritura y las matemáticas, sino que favorecemos el desarrollo de las aptitudes creativas, e intentamos que el aprendizaje no siga unos estándares, ya que cada niño tiene un ritmo y una «forma de aprender». M: ¿Cómo elegís el programa del curso? B: Tenemos un equipo pedagógico, formado por una pedagoga y una maestra especializada en primaria, además de varios voluntarios formados. Ellos van adaptando las activida-
des del programa en función también de los intereses reales de los niños/as M: ¿Qué edades tienen los niños que participan en este espacio educativo? B: De momento solo ofrecemos acompañamiento matinal, para niños de 3 a 6 años. Estamos en proceso de proyecto de homologación para poder aumentar este rango de edades. En las actividades extraescolares y de horario de tarde que realizamos, pueden participar también niños mayores de 6 años e incluso adultos. M: ¿Qué tipo de actividades realizáis? B: Realizamos actividades de cocina, huerto, juego libre, experimentos científicos, arte y manualidades, construcción, meditación, yoga, música… M: ¿Por qué crees que no funciona el sistema educativo convencional? B: El tratar de imponer una enseñanza estándar para todos es frustrante, porque cada niño es un mundo. Además, la presión de las tareas y los exámenes les crea ansiedad y muchas otras enfermedades que están apareciendo, relacionadas con esto. Todo

esto, unido a que los docentes del sistema convencional se enfrentan a grupos muy grandes, donde la atención individualizada es muy difícil, hace que los niños no estén receptivos a las enseñanzas y muchos de ellos se desmotiven y decidan, a la larga, abandonar los estudios. Con este sistema pretendemos ver qué es lo que le motiva a cada niño y de qué manera lo integra mejor, intentando encontrar una forma creativa y motivadora para transmitir el conocimiento, siempre siendo el niño participe de su aprendizaje, a través de una pedagogía activa. M: Algo más para terminar… B: Semillas al Viento es un espacio abierto a todo el que quiera colaborar. Pretendemos crear un futuro para Fuerteventura de personas felices, conscientes, centradas e inteligentes. Y desde aquí hacemos un llamamiento a las instituciones, para que nos apoyen en la medida de lo posible, ya que ofrecemos un tipo de educación muy demandada en esta isla, y que creemos puede ayudar enormemente a reducir el fracaso escolar en Canarias, creando una educación más integral, más respetuosa, que en un futuro pueda llegar a ser pública y por supuesto gratuita.

SEMILLAS AL VIENTO another way to learn is possible
Last October, in the town of Lajares, a non-profit socio-educational association, «Semillas al viento», started up; an association made up by parents, teaching professionals and some volunteers, aiming to found a new educational method in the island, based on the recognition and development of multiple intelligences, on understanding and respecting each child’s pace of development and on helping to understand and manage the emotional side of children, mainly in the first years of their development. We spoke to Brenda Andreoni Kunz, author of this project, who tells us in detail the objectives of such kind of association. Macaronesia: How did this idea come up? Brenda: It all started with a strong desire to bring my two daughters to an alternative teaching school, able to adapt to their individual needs and offering a respectful environment and, above all, teaching «for
life», transmitted from love. One Summer I decided to set up a Summer camp at home, where they could alleviate the stress suffered during the whole school year. In the camp we developed, mainly, their creative side… The experience was so positive that among all the families we set ourselves the objective of doing something which could last for the whole year, and this is how «Semillas al Viento» was set up. M: What are the targets of this association? B: We depart from the idea that if the emotional side of the child is balanced and looked after, if they feel they are listened to and respected, learning will flow and will be much easier to integrate. This is why we try to create a harmonious environment where we develop the multiple intelligences, that is, we don’t only pay attention to literacy and maths, but we also help the development of creative abilities and we try teaching not to follow any standards, as every child has a different pace and way of learning. M: How do you choose the programme of the school year? B: We have a teaching team, formed by a pedagogue and a primary education teacher,
apart from several trained volunteers. They are adapting program activities also according to the real interests of children M: What ages are the children participating in this educational space? B: At the moment we only offer morning accompaniment for 3 to 6 year-olds. We are in the process of project approval in order to increase this age range. In the extra-curricular and evening activities we arrange, over six-year-olds and even adults can participate. M: What kind of activities do you carry out? B: We do cooking activities, orchard, free play, science experiments, art and crafts, construction, meditation, yoga, music ... M: Why do you think the mainstream educational model does not work? B: Trying to impose a standard education for everybody is frustrating, because every child is different. Moreover, the pressure of extensive assignments and tests cause them anxiety and many other emerging diseases related to this field. All this, together with the fact that teachers in the conventional system are faced with very large groups, where individual attention is very difficult, makes children not to be receptive to the
teachings and many of them demotivate and decide, in the long run, to drop out of education. With this system we intend to find out what’s what motivates each child and how they integrate learning the best, trying to find a creative and motivating way to transmit knowledge, the child always being the one taking part in their own learning through active teaching. M: Anything else, to finish ... B: Semillas al Viento is open to everyone who wants to cooperate. We aim to create a future of happy, conscious, focused and intelligent people for Fuerteventura. And from here we call on the institutions to support us as much as possible, and we offer a highly demanded kind of education on this island, and we believe it can greatly help reduce school failure in the Canary Islands, creating a more respectful and comprehensive education, which in the future may become public and, of course, free.

El futuro de la automoción llega a Fuerteventura y con él la primera «fotolinera», situada en el muelle chico de la capital, que ofrece combustibles que rinden más y contaminan menos, además de disponer de una estación fotovoltaica y de un punto de recarga rápida, gratuito, para vehículos eléctricos, lo que la convierte en pionera en las Islas Canarias. El punto de recarga rápido está instalado y a la espera de terminar los últimos trámites administrativos, que seguramente permitirán su puesta en funcionamiento en un plazo de dos meses. El Cabildo, a su vez, ya está poniendo en marcha una red de puntos de recarga, a lo largo de la isla, para asegurar el suministro a los vehículos eléctricos en largos recorridos.
El sábado 18 de junio tendrá lugar, en Espacio Danza Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario, un taller intensivo de 3h. de iniciación al tango, impartido por los profesores de la escuela Barnatango, Olga Vall y Carlos Baruque. El taller será una primera toma de contacto y una invitación a conocer más profundamente esta danza: aprender el lenguaje del tango, a caminar con soltura, algunas figuras básicas, el abrazo, la marca, la comunicación de la pareja y los conocimientos necesarios para la improvisación; todo encaminado a la búsqueda de un baile fluido, acompasado y elegante. Puerto del Rosario inaugurates the first Intensive initiation tango workshop in «photo-station» in the island Fuerteventura The future of the automobile reaches Fuerteventura and with it the first «photostation», located in the small dock in the capital, offering fuels that perform better and pollute less, apart from having a photovoltaic station and a free fast charge points for electric vehicles, making it a pioneer in the Canary Islands. The fast charging point is installed and waiting for the final paperwork to be finished, which will surely allow its start up within two months. The council, in turn, is now launching a network of charging points throughout the island, to ensure supply to electric vehicles over long distances.

On Saturday June 18th, a three-hour intensive initiation tango workshop will take place at Espacio Danza Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario, taught by professors Olga Vall and Carlos Baruque, from Barnatango school. The workshop will be a first contact and an invitation to get to know this dance more in depth: learn the language of tango, to walk with ease, some basic figures, the embrace and communication of the couple and the necessary knowledge for improvisation; all aimed at finding a fluid, rhythmic and graceful dance.
