DOMINGO RODRÍGUEZ

EL COLORAO ‘El Colorao’ nació en una estirpe de tocadores en Tetir, en 1964. Bisnieto, nieto e hijo de tocadores, Domingo empezó a rascar los instrumentos: guitarra, bandurria, timple… cuando aún le quedaban muchos centímetros por crecer. Cuando creció llegó a ser un hombre pluriempleado: músico en una orquesta, trabajador de Iberia y profesor de música. Un día consiguió cuadrar agendas y tener una semana de vacaciones. Por el periódico se enteró de un curso de guitarra en Lanzarote, impartido por Blas Sánchez y el Guitar Consort de París. Cogió el barco y se presentó en Lanzarote. Recuerda cómo aquella oportunidad le sirvió para abrirle «un mundo que no sabía que existía». Los profesores se quedaron asombrados de cómo aquel joven, sin tener conocimientos de música, era capaz de sacar de la guitarra «Recuerdos de la Alhambra». En 1985 le convencieron para hacer las maletas y se fue a estudiar guitarra clásica a París. Allí conoció la música del guitarrista argentino Jorge Cardoso que residía en Madrid y, sin dudarlo, se trasladó a estudiar a la capital con el maestro argentino. Tras seis años fuera de Canarias, regresó a Tenerife, donde se presentó a un concurso de timple del que fue finalista junto a José Antonio Ramos. Grabaron un disco en .4

vinilo que no tuvo más recorrido que el de morir en un cajón del Gobierno de Canarias. De nuevo, volvió a hacer las maletas, esta vez para regresar a su isla. Durante años compaginó la guitarra y el timple hasta que este último terminó robándole el corazón. «Me pareció más interesante y estaba más virgen», defiende el músico. Empezó a dar clases de timple, grabar discos, crear espectáculos y viajar por el mundo como embajador de Fuerteventura. El timplista asegura que, «desgraciadamente se podía hacer mucho más por la cultura en Fuerteventura». Recuerda aquellos tiempos en los que hubo una escuela de folclore que daba clase por todos los sitios y muchos grupos de folclore y parrandas. Hoy, para hacer una fiesta, hay que pagar a las parrandas. A su juicio, hay que «trabajar el folclore, pero no dar clases y ya está, sino a nivel de raíz y tradición que es lo que nos presenta al mundo. Se podría hacer mucho más que cerrarnos en un sitio a dar clase». Asegura ser un privilegiado y tener la suerte de que su trabajo esté valorado en Canarias, pero reconoce que donde menos toca es en Fuerteventura. Ha presentado proyectos en teatros como el Pérez Galdós o el Cuyás que han colgado el cartel de completo. Sin embargo en su isla, cuan-

También con el compromiso de dejar, a los que están por llegar, una isla alejada del desarrollismo y de todo aquello que pone freno a la naturaleza, la identidad y a la historia local.

do los presenta, parece casi que «estoy pidiendo favores». La cabeza del timplista de Tetir no para de dar vueltas gestando ideas. Le esperan siete u ocho discos en directo y no directo, grabados, pendientes de ver la luz y proyectos como crear en Fuerteventura el Museo de la Memoria donde «mostrar toda la riqueza cultural que tiene Fuerteventura». El proyecto contempla crear un lugar donde los interesados pueden ver todo tipo de cantos, cómo se tocaba la guitarra, el timple o la bandurria. También habría un lugar donde exponer aquellas costumbres y tradiciones de nuestros mayores desde las señas de agua, las técnicas para plantar o cómo hacían de comer nuestros abuelos. «Desde pequeño me interesé por esa faceta. Tengo muchas horas de grabación y quiero poner todo eso al acceso de investigadores e interesados». De momento, el proyecto no ha llegado a materializarse. diendo Fuerteventura. Una de sus últimas batallas es salvar las Dunas de Corralejo. Lamenta su deterioro y pérdida de capacidad, «antes inundaban la carretera, hoy ya no». ’El Colorao’ es claro, «estoy por la labor de que quiten la carretera y que la pasen por la zona de arriba. Se puede disfrutar de un entorno maravilloso sin necesidad de tener que meter el coche. Cuando voy al Teide no meto el coche en la punta ni tampoco entro con él a Garajonay o la Caldera de Taburiente». También está en contra de maniobras militares o el proyecto

de Tindaya y de que el antiguo Puerto Cabras siga desapareciendo a manos de una piqueta movida por el desarrollo y la especulación. Asegura que le resulta «muy triste que no se haya hecho un plan de protección para esas viviendas» y critica el derribo con licencia del Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario de dos casas antiguas en pleno casco antiguo. «Abogo por darse prisa y proteger todo lo que sea patrimonial. Cualquier casa antigua, aunque no haya castillos medievales, hay que protegerla porque es nuestra historia», concluye. El timple le está esperando.

He goes to bed with a project in his head and he wakes up with another one. In his drawer there are records to be released and ideas such as the Museum of the Memory. The most international artist of Fuerteventura, Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’, has been living as long as he remembers with an instrument in his hands. And also with the commitment of leaving, to those who have to come, an island far from developmentalism and from what limits nature, identity and local history. ‘El Colorao’ was born in a family of music players in Tetir, in 1964. As a great-grandson, grandson and son of players, Domingo started to strum instruments such as guitar, bandurria and timple when he still had many centimetres to grow. Once grown up, he did different jobs at the same time: musician in an orchestra, worker for Iberia and music teacher. One day he managed to organize his agenda and have a week’s holiday. He read on the newspaper about a guitar course in Lanzarote, held by Blas Sánchez and Paris’ guitar consort. He got into a boat and off in Lanzarote. He remembers how that opportunity helped him open «a world I didn’t know existed». His teachers were impressed by how that young man, with no knowledge about music, was able to strum «Recuerdos de la Alhambra» out of his guitar. In 1985, he was convinced to pack his things and go to Paris to study classic guitar. In the French capital city he got to know the music by the Argentinian guitarist Jorge Cardoso, who was living in Madrid and there he went to study with the Argentinian master. After six years away from the Canary islands, he moved to Tenerife. In the island where Mount Teide is, he participated in a contest of timple, where he made it to the finals with José Antonio Ramos. Together they recorded a vinyl that was left abandoned in a drawer of the Government of the Canary Islands. He packed his things again, this time to go back to his island. He had been combining guitar and timple for years, till the latter definitively stole his heart. «I thought it was more interesting and more virgin», the musician states. He started to give timple lessons, to record albums, to create shows and to travel around the world as an ambassador of Fuerteventura. The timple player claims that «unfortunately a lot more could have been done for culture in Fuerteventura». He remembers about those times when a folkloristic school was giving lessons everywhere and there were lots of folkloristic groups and parades. Nowadays, to organize a party, you have to pay for a parade. In his opinion, it’s necessary to «work on folklore, not only by giving lessons, but also by focusing on its origins and tradition, that are our presentation to the world. We could do much more than closing in a place and give lessons». He states he is a privileged person to have the chance that his job is appreciated in the Canary Islands, but he realizes that Fuerteventura is the place where he plays less. He presented projects in theatres like Pérez Galdós or Cuyás that went sold out. Nevertheless on his island,

when he presents them, it almost looks like as if «I’m asking favours». The musician from Tetir never stops his mind from creating new ideas. He has seven or eight live and studio records already made and waiting to be published, and new projects such as creating a Museum of the Memory in Fuerteventura, where «to show all the cultural wealth of the island». The project aims at creating a place where people can experience all kinds of singing and see how musicians played guitar, timple or bandurria. It would also include a place where to show the habits and traditions of our elders, such as the ways they used to predict rains, the seeding techniques or cooking methods our grandparents used. «I’ve been interested in this topic since I was a child. I have recorded many hours of music and I want researchers and interested people to have access to them». At this point, the project has not been brought to life yet. When he doesn’t have a timple in his hands, he defends Fuerteventura. One of his latest battles is saving the dunes of Corralejo. He complaints about their deterioration and loss in capacity, «they used to invade the road before, now this doesn’t happen anymore». ‘El Colorao’ is clear, «I’m in favour of closing the road and moving traffic

When I go to Mount Teide I don’t park my car on the pick, nor I enter Garajonay or Caldereta de Taburiente with it». He also takes position against military manoeuvres, the Tindaya project and the fact that the old Puerto Cabras keeps on disappearing due to a building sector driven by development and speculation. He claims it is «very sad that a protection plan for those houses hasn’t been done» and he criticizes the demolition of two old dwellings, right in the centre of the old town, authorized by the City Council of Puerto del Rosario. «I firmly believe we should hurry up and protect every patrimonial property. Every old house, even if it’s not a medieval castle, has to be protected because it is our history», he says at last. His timple is waiting for him.

Estas cuatro mujeres emprendedoras han creado Lapa Studio en El Cotillo, un espacio donde fluyen el cariño y la creatividad, conjugando piezas de arte, diseño y decoración, firmadas por artesanos locales y marcas foráneas, que han sido especialmente seleccionadas para pertenecer a este proyecto. Al adentrarte en esta pequeña tienda-taller, sientes que entras en un lugar precioso y extraño, que invita a contemplar y casi susurrar para no romper el equili.6

La sonrisa de cualquiera de sus propietarias y un entusiasta y cálido «Hola, buenos días o buenas tardes» reciben a quien entra en Lapa, invitándole a recorrer cada una de sus salas y a examinar, con cuidado y sin prisa, cada una de las piezas que resultan tan especiales como el lugar que las alberga. Las cuatro lapas, artistas y artesanas, son todas de mentes inquietas que buscan enriquecer sus profesiones y sus vidas con nuevos proyectos y nuevos retos.

De ahí, que el destino las uniera hace tiempo para empezar a gestar lo que hoy es Lapa. Algo que empezó como una bonita idea, de esas que se dicen ante un café o una cerveza, y que se convirtió muy pronto en toda una declaración de intenciones. Pero Lapa es una tienda y es un estudio y es mucho más… Es un lugar donde aprender, donde crear, donde escuchar y donde compartir. Conocemos a las protagonistas de este proyecto de una manera igualmente especial, cada una de ellas ha sido descrita por las demás.

What may have looked like a good joke turns out to be the perfect fusion, indeed. These four enterprising women created Lapa Studio in El Cotillo, a place where tenderness and creativity flow, blending pieces of art, design and décor authored by local artisans and foreign brands, specifically selected to be part of this project. As you get inside this little studio-shop, you feel like you’re going into a lovely and odd place, that invites you to contemplate and almost whisper in order not to break the balance of what’s in there. The smile of any of its owners and an enthusiastic and warm «Hi, good morning or good afternoon» welcome whoever enters Lapa, inviting to wander around each room, carefully and leisurely examine every piece, as special as the place that embraces them. The four lapas are all artists and artisans with lively minds and they try to enrich their professions and lives with new projects and challenges. This was the fertile ground for destiny to twine the girls’ threads some time ago and start to develop what is now Lapa. It was something that started as a good idea, one of those you talk about while sipping a coffee or a beer, and immediately turned out to be a proper declaration of intents. But Lapa is a shop and a studio and much more... it is place where to learn, where to create, where to listen and share. Let’s meet the protagonists of this project in a special way: each one of them was described by the others.

La decoradora del equipo, Julia es perfección. Minimalista en decoración pero rococó en buenas intenciones, nunca deja nada fuera de lugar y en todas sus composiciones puedes encontrar ese aire frío y a la vez cálido, que trae de su Finlandia natal y su inspiración nórdica. Su vida está llena de anécdotas que querrás escuchar una y otra vez. Su humor rápido y ácido hacen que siempre te apetezca estar con ella. Su presencia ilumina cualquier lugar y es que no hay oscuridad en ella. Una sola mirada de Julia con esos ojazos azules lo dice todo, pero nunca oirás de su boca una mala crítica hacia nadie. Su bondad solo es comparable a la perfección de sus puntadas.

Alegre y divertida, desprende a la vez dulzura y carácter. Greta es arte. La que puede con todo y nunca se queja. En un día Greta puede pintar un cuadro con Marlon en brazos, escribir y maquetar un libro, repartir posters, darse un bañito con Chris o ir con Oli a patinar juntos. Es valiente y tenaz, en constante lucha para que tengamos una planeta mejor actuando en pos del medio ambiente y la naturaleza, siempre presente en sus cuadros. No necesita a nadie para sobrevivir, solo a lo mejor si se ha olvidado las llaves de casa o del coche. Su sonrisa pícara y perfecta, convierten a esta artistaza en una persona de carne y hueso.

Es una de esas personas que atraen sin ni siquiera conocerlas. Es eléctrica y natural. Vitalidad y energía en estado puro que se plasman en sus creaciones llenas de color y fuerza. Cris teje amistades como bolsos de crochet: nudos firmes como sus abrazos, que nunca se pueden deshacer porque están amarrados con hilos de bondad y decisión. Divertida como nadie, sensual como sus pajaritos de colores y tierna como sus ositos de ganchillo, hasta que le sale el Yorkshire que lleva dentro defendiendo a su gente hasta la muerte. Su casa siempre estará abierta como sus brazos que esperarán en alto para abrazarte cada vez que te vea.

Bili es la representación de la elegancia, la dulzura y la calma. Es paz, es casa. Puede el mundo derrumbarse que Bili mantendrá la calma y la sonrisa. Parece que nunca se pone nerviosa ante nada y eso hace que gracias a ella todo fluya a la perfección. Desprende inspiración y tranquilidad y, sin embargo, es inquieta y tiene mucha curiosidad por todas las cosas en la vida. Siempre tiene ganas de aprender más y más y emprender nuevos proyectos. En su camino nunca hay piedras. Lo mismo hará 10 cursos a la vez, que diseñará un logo, coserá un cojín o carvará un sello, y siempre tendrá tiempo para escucharte y darte los mejores consejos. Belleza y delicadeza interior y exterior que refleja en todo lo que toca.

The designer of the team, Julia is perfection. Minimalist in décor but rococo in good intents, she never leaves anything out of place and in all her compositions you can find this cold –but warm, at the same time– allure she gets from her native Finland and her Nordic inspiration. Her life is full of anecdotes you’d wish to hear time after time. Her quick and acid humour makes you always want to spend time with her. Her presence illuminates any place and there’s no darkness in her. With just one single glance of those deep blue eyes, Julia can say it all, but you are never going to hear her make a critical comment about someone. Her goodness is only comparable to the perfection of her stitches.

Cheerful and funny, she emanates sweetness and character at the same time. Greta is art. The one who can stand it all and never complains. In one day, Greta can do a painting with Marlon in her arms, write and lay out a book, distribute posters, take a dip with Chris or go skating together with Oli. She is brave and tenacious, constantly fighting for us to have a better planet, taking action for the environment and nature, always present in her paintings. She needs nobody to survive, perhaps except when she forgets her house or car keys. Her rascal and perfect smile turns this great artist into a

Cris ties friendships as if they were crochet bags: knots as strong as her hugs, which can never be untied because they are made of threads of goodness and decision. She is funny like nobody else, alluring like her colourful little birds and tender like her crochet bears, till the Yorkshire dog inside of her comes out to stand up for her beloved ones till the end. Bili is the representation of elegance, sweetness and calm. She is peace, she is home. The world may fall apart, Bili will keep calm and smiling. It looks like she never gets nervous before anything and this is why, thanks to her, everything flows perfectly. She emanates inspiration and tranquillity and, nevertheless, she is lively and curious about everything in life. She is always willing to learn more and more and to start new projects. On her path there’s never a stone. She may be doing 10 courses at a time, while drawing a logo, sewing a bag, binding a book or carving a stamp. Beauty and inner and outer delicacy reflect in everything she touches.

ROSA ESTÉVEZ & BELÉN LOUZAO, EJEMPLO DE SUPERACIÓN Dos madres que dejaron de repetirse «NO puedo» y dieron el primer paso para lograr todo lo que se propongan Rosa Estévez Monzón, 52 años, originaria de Arinaga (Gran Canaria). Se trasladó definitivamente a la isla en 2006, aunque desde los 11 años ya acostumbraba a venir a Fuerteventura. Criada en un pueblo de «mar», Rosa nunca imaginó que acabaría descubriendo un deporte que la vincularía tanto a este medio, el Stand Up Paddle, que se ha convertido en su gran pasión. Belén Louzao Carlín, 45 años, de sangre gallega, afincada en Fuerteventura desde hace 18 años. Trabajadora y emprendedora nata, es además una gran luchadora. Jamás pensó que el SUP le cambiaría la vida y, sin embargo, es la actual campeona de España de Stand UP Paddle en la categoría Allround. Estas dos mujeres, ambas madres de jóvenes que forman parte del equipo Onexe, son un claro ejemplo de superación, un referente para todas aquellas personas que se ponen el «NO» por delante. Y es que repetirnos ese «no puedo» nos limita, se convierte en miedo y se instala como una gran interferencia a la hora de alcanzar sueños. El miedo aparece sin permiso y se queda hasta que te atreves a hacer algo al respecto. Estas dos madres, que hoy forman parte del equipo de Stand UP Paddle del Team Onexe, que entrenan en el Centro de Tecnificación de la Escuela Náutica Municipal, quieren lanzar un mensaje de motivación y contarnos su experiencia a favor del «SI se puede». ¿Si hace 4 años os hubieran dicho que formaríais parte del equipo de SUP de Onexe y competiríais en el Campeonato de España…? Rosa: ¡No me lo hubiera creído, ni en sueños! Hoy, después .10

de todo este tiempo entrenando, disfrutando y superándome, pienso que cualquier sueño o ilusión con el Sup y Onexe es superado por la realidad que vivo. Belén: Hubiera pensado que me estaban sobrevalorando. ¿Qué hizo que os animarais a probar el Stand UP Paddle? Ahora entrenáis casi a diario, ¿cuántas horas le dedicáis?, ¿habéis notado algún cambio físicamente? Rosa: Hace tiempo Nayra me animó a iniciarme en el Sup pero mi respuesta fue «¡estás loca! ¿Cómo me voy a subir yo a una tabla?». Ella siguió insistiendo, igual que lo hacían mi hijo y mi pareja, siempre me animaban. Yo sentía y tenía la necesidad de practicar algún deporte, miraba a los chicos mientras entrenaban y me decía ¿por qué no? Pero el miedo y la vergüenza me frenaban. Hasta que me decidí, no sin miedo, a iniciar el curso para principiantes, ¡bendito el día! Estoy feliz. Agradezco el interés y la dedicación de mi entrenadora «súper» Esperanza y de Javier, entrenador físico en tierra, por el empeño y la personalización de su entrenamiento. Actualmente tenemos dos días oficiales de entrenamiento, una hora en mar y otra en tierra. Pero entrenamos todos los días que podemos, tanto en el gimnasio como en el agua. Amo ir a practicar y eso que antes era una persona muy pasiva. Ahora lo disfruto, voy con ganas, somos muy constantes y físicamente, me siento muy bien. Belén: A mí me convenció Rosa, a quien admiro desde que la conozco, también me animaba la ilusión de compartir momentos inolvidables con mi hija. Siempre me ha gustado hacer deporte pero no me creía capaz de llegar a formar parte de un equipo, ni

Entreno casi a diario aunque no siempre en el agua. Tenemos un preparador físico genial, practico un poco de yoga en casa y tengo dos amigas de las que aprovecho lo que me quieran enseñar de yoga y de abdominales hipopresivos. En el agua tenemos una entrenadora estupenda a la que agradezco su dedicación y los valores que transmite, tanto a nosotras como a los niños. ¿Qué significa este deporte en vuestras vidas y qué es lo que más os gusta de él? Rosa: A mí este deporte me ha dado vida. Siento la necesidad de subir a la tabla y salir al mar, me da mucha fuerza. Ha potenciado las sonrisas en mi vida. Me encanta formar parte de Onexe, por su ambiente y por como valoran a cada miembro de este equipo potenciando lo mejor de cada uno. Me siento en familia con mis compañeros y entrenadores y disfruto de todas las actividades que hacemos juntos como la convivencia en los campeonatos. Me ha permitido conocer y relacionarme con personas maravillosas y grandes deportistas. Los que me quieren y han estado a mí lado me dicen que soy su ejemplo a seguir porque cuando la vida me ha puesto obstáculos no me he rendido y que con mi dedicación al SUP me he fortalecido más; un besote para ellos. Belén: Siempre he sido un pez, pero de orilla. Superar rachas de viento y marejada encima de una tabla me ha dado confianza para afrontar la vida creyendo en mí y mis posibilidades sin esperar a que alguien lo haga por mí. Y lo que más me gusta es sentirme sola y vulnerable dentro del mar y, al mismo tiempo, resolutiva y capaz de manejar situaciones. Belén, te has proclamado Campeona de España de la categoría Allround el pasado mes de Octubre en Baiona (Galicia), ¿qué se siente? Belén: Me siento orgullosa, lo que me da fuerza e ilusión para seguir entrenando y superando retos un poquito mayores. Rosa, ya son varios años que realizas el circuito Canario de SUP, obteniendo varios primeros puestos en el pódium y cuarto puesto en el Campeonato de España. ¿Qué pasa por tu mente en esos momentos? Rosa: Lo vivo mucho, siempre quiero hacer un buen papel, por mí y por Onexe. Al inicio de la competición me pongo nerviosa y siempre me digo «pero qué haces aquí», pero enseguida me digo, «Rosa tú puedes, vamos, lo vales» (risas). Lo que sí tengo claro siempre, es que tengo que terminar, ese es mi objetivo, mi superación. Los pódium son un estímulo, un premio a tu trabajo —que agradezco de corazón y vivo con alegría—; a todos nos gusta estar en el pódium, pero para mí lo importante es participar. Cada vez ponéis el listón más alto, ¿cuál es vuestro próximo propósito? Rosa: Ahora nos estamos preparando, con intensidad, para el campeonato de España en Corralejo, organizado por ONEXE. Queremos dar lo mejor de nosotros. Hablo en plural porque estoy segura de que todos tenemos el mismo deseo. El club tiene muchos proyectos; por fin Onexe es ya un Centro de Tecnificación y yo soy parte de este proyecto, lo que es muy importante para mí ya que han contado conmigo a pesar de no ser una

deportista de élite; adoro este club y me siento muy orgullosa de pertenecer a él, es muy importante sentirte valorada de esta manera. Mi propósito ahora es tener fuerzas para participar el próximo año en todo lo que el Club proponga; se habla de una prueba del Eurotour en Bilbao y aunque pueda parecer que aspire a mucho, ahora me digo, «¿por qué no?» (risas); claro, dentro de mi categoría. También me gustaría aprender otros deportes de mar cuando acaben las competiciones de este año. Belén: Mi próximo objetivo es participar en el Campeonato de la Copa de España de Larga Distancia en categoría Allround que es en diciembre. Me gustaría participar en la Élite pero no estoy entrenada para ello. Ese es mi objetivo para el año que viene. Vuestros hijos comenzaron a practicar SUP poco antes que vosotras, ¿cómo es entrenar y competir en el mismo deporte? ¿cómo vivís la experiencia de viajar juntos a las competiciones? Rosa: Intento separar lo de ser madre aunque es complicado. Es una experiencia maravillosa y muy gratificante. Intentamos respetar el espacio de cada uno para poder vivir nuestra experiencia y crecer. Intento trasmitir a mi hijo que si se quiere se puede, que hay que trabajar, tener disciplina… pero en la escuela náutica y en las competiciones, o cualquier actividad del club, soy su compañera y él está bajo el control de sus entrenadores. Belén: Es una experiencia enriquecedora que ayuda a tener algo en común con un hijo adolescente, más si ese algo es el deporte. Los viajes los disfruto mucho porque voy como compañera de equipo más que como madre. En los viajes todos los adultos nos transformamos en algún momento en padres de los niños del equipo, pero también delegamos responsabilidades en los más grandes que nos ayudan un montón, en fin, lo que hace un equipo. El Stand UP Paddle, ha influido de forma muy positiva en vuestras vidas, ¿ha tenido el mismo efecto en vuestros hijos? Rosa: En mí muy positivo. En mi hijo, y creo que en todos los niños, el SUP y Onexe contribuyen a su educación potenciando los valores necesarios para ser grandes personas, no es solo conoci-

miento deportiva, que en estos son los mejores del mundo mundial (jajaja), no hay duda (risas). Belén: ¡Por supuesto! La disciplina, los buenos hábitos, el compañerismo, el compromiso, la amistad, los valores. Ahora, por fin, está en marcha este proyecto en el que Nayra y el equipo técnico que ha estado con ella desde el principio han volcado tiempo, ilusión y esfuerzo; la preparación a un nivel más alto es muy positivo para nuestros hijos y también para nosotros. ¿Algún mensaje para nuestros lectores?? Rosa: Me encantaría que padres e hijos se animaran, que vinieran a conocer y a practicar SUP u otra modalidad de deporte acuático. Que conozcan nuestro club. Que superen sus miedos. Aquí todos somos y todos contamos. Belén: Mi mensaje es que el que quiera hacer un deporte de mar pero tiene miedo tiene que subirse a una tabla de paddle. Si supera el miedo inicial, no querrá dejar de practicar y aprender este deporte e incluso otros.

ROSA ESTÉVEZ & BELÉN LOUZAO, EXAMPLE OF HOW TO GO BEYOND YOUR LIMITS

Two mothers who stopped repeating to themselves «I can’t» and took the first step to achieve everything they intended Rosa Estévez Monzón, 52 years old, from Arinaga (Gran Canaria). She permanently settled on the island in 2006, even if she used to come to Fuerteventura since she was 11. Grown up in a village by the sea, Rosa has never imagined she could end up discovering a sport, which is now a great passion –stand up paddle boarding– that would connect her to the ocean so much. Belén Louzao Carlín, 45 years old, of Galician origins and settled in Fuerteventura 18 years ago. Natural-born worker and entrepreneur, great fighter, she is now the present Spanish champion in stand up paddling in the category Allround; she has never thought SUP could change her life. These two women, both mothers of teenagers who are in the Onexe team, are a clear example of how to overcome your limits, a reference point for all those people who put a «NO» ahead. Repeating that «I can’t» to ourselves limits us, it becomes a fear that sets in ourselves as a great interference whilst achieving our dreams. Fear comes uninvited and stays till you dare do something against it. These two mothers, who are now part of the Stand Up Paddle team of Onexe and train in the high-performance sports centre (Centro de Tecnificación) in Escuela Náutica Municipal, want to convey a message of motivation and talk about their experience in support of that «Yes, you can». If 4 years ago someone had told you that you’d be part of the Onexe SUP team and that you’d compete in the Spanish Championship, what would you have thought? Rosa: I wouldn’t have believed that, no chance! Today, after all this time training, enjoying and overcoming myself, I think any dream with SUP and Onexe is outdone by the reality I’m living. Belén: I’d have thought they were overrating me. How did you make up your minds to try Stand Up Paddling? Now you train almost daily… how many hours do you dedicate to it? Did you notice any change physically? Rosa: Long ago, Nayra pushed me to start SUP but my answer was «are you crazy? How can I stand on a board?». She insisted, as my son and partner did, they’ve always supported me. I felt and had the need to do some sports, I used to watch the guys training and said to myself «why not?». But then fear and embarrassment stopped me, till when I decided, and not without fear, to start the beginner course, blessed be that day! Here I am now, happy! I thank my «super» trainer Esperanza for the interest and dedication, and Javier, my trainer out of the water, for his determination and his personalised trainings. Now we have two official days of training, one hour in the water and one out of it, but then we train anytime we can, both in the gym and in the water. I love exercising –even though I used to be a passive person–, I enjoy it, I love it, I’m motivated, we are very constant. Physically you feel very good. .12

Belén: I was convinced by Rosa, who I’ve been admiring ever since I’ve known her. I was also motivated by the thrill of sharing unforgettable moments with my daughter. I’ve always loved to do sports, but I didn’t think I could be part of a team, nor overcome my mental clichés. Moreover, it has always cost me a lot to have healthy habits. Now I’m more than happy because in the club there’s a positive and healthy environment. I train almost every day, even if not always in the water. We have a great trainer, I do some yoga at home and I have two friends I practise yoga and hypopressive abs with. In the water we have an awesome trainer I thank for her dedication and for the values she shares with us and the children, as well. What does this sport represent in your lives and what do you love most about it? Rosa: This sport gave me liveliness. I feel the need to get on a board and go out in the sea, it gives me a lot of strength. It boosted the smiles in my life. I love being part of Onexe for its environment, the way they value each member of this team, boosting the best of everyone. I feel like I’m in a family with my team mates and trainers and I enjoy all the activities we do, like living together during championships. It gave me the opportunity to meet wonderful people and great athletes. The people who love me and have been on my side say I’m their example to follow because when life presented me obstacles I didn’t give up and my dedication to SUP made me stronger; a kiss for them. Belén: I’ve always loved the sea, but from the beach. Overcoming gusts of wind and rough waters on a board gave me the confidence to face life believing in myself and in my possibilities without waiting for somebody to do it for me. And what I like most is to feel alone and vulnerable in the middle of the sea, but at the same time resolute and able to manage situations. Belén, you won the Spanish Championship in the category Allround last October in Baiona (Galicia), how do you feel about it? Belén: I feel proud and this gives me the strength and thrill to keep training and overcoming greater challenges. Rosa, you’ve already been participating in the SUP Championship of the Canary Islands for years, winning the first place, and you’re forth in the Spanish Championship. What happens in your mind in those moments? Rosa: I live them fully, I always want to do my best for me and for Onexe. At the beginning of the competition I’m nervous and I always say to myself «What on earth are you doing here?», but immediately after I say «Rosa, come on, you can do it, you’re worth it» (laughter). What I do have clear in my mind is that I have to complete the competition, this is my objective, my challenge. Podiums are a stimulus, a prize to your effort –which I’m more than thankful for and happy to receive– we all love to be on a podium, but for me the most important thing is participating. You are always setting higher goals, what’s your next one? Rosa: We are now intensively training for the Spanish Championship here in Corralejo, organised by Onexe. We want to give our best, and I say «we» because I think we all have the same desire. The club has lots of projects; finally Onexe is an official highperformance centre and I’m part of this project, which is very important for me, because they counted on me even if I’m not an elite athlete. I love this club and I’m very proud to be a part of it, feeling that you’re appreciated is extremely important. My aim now is to be prepared enough to participate in everything the club proposes; they’re talking about participating in a stage

of the Eurotour in Biblao, and even though it may seem like I’m aspiring to something too challenging, now I say to myself «why not?» (laughter). Of course, in my category. I would also like to learn other water sports, when this year competitions end. Belén: My next goal is to participate in December in the Long Distance Spanish SUP Championship in the category Allround. I would love to participate in the Elite category, but I’m not trained for that. This is my objective for next year. Your children started stand up paddling right before you, how is it to train and compete in the same sport? How do you live the experience of travelling together for the championships? Rosa: I try to leave my maternal part aside, even if it’s complicated. It is a wonderful experience, very gratifying. We try to respect everyone’s space to live our own experience and improve. I try to teach my son that if you want something, you can achieve it. You have to work on it, discipline yourself… but in the club and during the competitions, I’m his team mate and he’s under his trainers’ control. Belén: It’s an enriching experience and it helps to have something in common with your teenage children, and it’s even better if this something is a sport. I enjoy travels a lot because I go there as a team mate, rather than a mother. During the travels, all adults go back to be parents in some moments, but we also delegate responsibilities to the others, who help us a lot, which is basically what a team does! Stand Up Paddling influenced you lives positively. Did it have the same effect on your children? Rosa: For what concerns me, yes, definitely. For my son, and I think all children, SUP and Onexe contribute to their education –boosting those values that allow you to be a great person– and not just to their technical preparation, where they’re absolutely the best, no doubts about it! (laughter) Belén: Sure! Discipline, good habits, team spirit, commitment, friendship, values. Finally, now the project that Nayra and all the technical team have been working on for such a long time is up and running; a high-level preparation is very positive for our children and for us as well. Any message to communicate to our readers? Rosa: I would love to see other parents and children coming here and discovering SUP or other water sports, that they know the club, that they overcome their fears. Here we all count. Belén: Those who would like to do a water sport –but are scared at the same time– should try SUP. Once you overcome the initial fear, you will never stop practising and learning this sport or even others.

Todos hemos oído esta frase alguna vez, pero… ¿qué significa? ¿cómo funciona? Una creencia no es más que algo que piensas que es cierto; pero… ¿es necesariamente cierto eso que crees? Pues no, no necesariamente. Es simplemente lo que consideras verdadero basándote en tu propia cultura, en tu aprendizaje y en las experiencias de vida, (tu Paradigma). Tal y como yo lo veo, no existen las creencias verdaderas o falsas, sino más bien las CONSTRUCTIVAS o las LIMITANTES. Para saber si tus creencias son constructivas o no, solo has de fijarte en el resultado que estás obteniendo. ¿Cuál es tu realidad? Para ello te recomiendo que subas el volumen y empieces a escucharte. ¿Qué te dices a ti mismo y qué le dices a la gente sobre la realidad que estás viviendo? Te estoy hablando de esa realidad que desesperadamente quieres cambiar pero que siempre termina por volver en el mismo estado de siempre. ¿Sabes de lo que te hablo? Algunos ejemplos comunes de creencias limitantes:

la información. A partir de ahí, ya dejamos de creer en Papá Noel. Otras veces, la situación es algo más complicada y como no hay impacto, ese cambio de creencia no es tan rápido, por ello, hemos de trabajar cada día para lograrlo. Aquí te dejo un ejercicio para que vayas practicando, pero recuerda, para cambiar esa realidad has de repetir esas creencias constructivas tantas veces como puedas, hablo de 20 o 30 veces al día y de repente, te garantizo… que si te lo crees, lo creas. CREENCIA LIMITANTE

AFIRMACIÓN POSITIVA (en presente, como si ya lo hubieras conseguido)

Soy de huesos anchos, me viene de familia, tengo el metabolismo lento, yo respiro y engordo, etc.

Vale, pues ya nos vamos entendiendo, justamente LA REPETICIÓN de esas creencias limitantes son la causa de que tu realidad sea la que es y no la que tú quieres que sea. Entonces, sabiendo todo esto… ¿cómo cambio mi realidad? Pues para cambiar mi realidad, simplemente tengo que cambiar mis creencias. Algunas veces podremos cambiar una creencia de golpe. Por ejemplo: Cuando éramos chicos y creíamos en Papá Noel. Un día, de repente, un niño en el colegio nos dijo que no existía; ese mismo día corrimos a casa y contrastamos .14

Recuerda: de REALIDAD a CREENCIAS LIMITANTES y de CREENCIAS LIMITANTES a AFIRMACIONES POSITIVAS. Eso sí, una vez vayas cambiando tus creencias limitantes es IMPERIAL que acompañes a tus afirmaciones positivas con ACCIONES, si no, no habrá cambio. Pero no le des muchas vueltas, porque lo mágico de todo esto, es que cuando actúas con la mente a tu favor es muchísimo más fácil y tus acciones fluirán de forma casi natural. BELIEVE IT TO ACHIEVE IT! We all heard this sentence sometimes, but… what does it mean? How does it work? A belief is nothing but what you think is true; still… are your beliefs necessarily true? Well no, not necessarily. It is merely what you consider to be true based on your own culture, your learning and your life experiences. (your Paradigm). As I see it, there are no true or false beliefs, but rather CONSTRUCTIVE or LIMITING ones. In order for you to know whether your beliefs are constructive or not, you just have to focus on the result you are obtaining. What is your reality? That’s why I suggest you to turn up the volume and start listening to yourself. What are you saying to yourself and what are you saying to people about the reality you are living? I’m referring to that reality you are desperately trying to change but that keeps on repeating the same way. Do you know what I’m talking about? Here you have a few common examples of limiting beliefs: REALITY

LIMITING BELIEFS

I’m overweight

I’m big-boned, I’m from an overweight family, my metabolism is slow, I get fat as easy as I breathe, etc.

I don’t have a job

The job market is in bad shape, we are facing a crisis, companies are not hiring, etc.

I don’t have a partner

All men are the same, the good ones already have a partner, I’m better on my own, etc.

Well, we know now what we’re talking about: precisely THE REPETITION of these limiting beliefs is the reason why your reality is the way it is and not the way you would like it to be. So, knowing all of this… how do I change my reality? Then, to change my reality, I just have to change my beliefs. Sometimes we can change a belief all at once. For example: When we were children, we believed in Santa Claus. Then one day, all of a sudden, a child at school told us he doesn’t exist; on that same day we ran home and confronted the information. From then on, we stopped believing in Santa Claus.

Ghazale / Executive Coach Some other times, the situation is a bit more complicated and, since there’s no impact, this change in belief is not that rapid and every day we have to work on it to produce it. Here I give you an exercise for you to start practicing. Remember: to change this reality you have to repeat these constructive beliefs as much as you can, even 20 or 30 times a day and suddenly, I swear… that if you believe it you achieve it.

LIMITING BELIEF

POSITIVE STATEMENT (in the present tense, as if you’ve already achieved it)

I’m big-boned, I’m from an overweight family, my metabolism is slow, I get fat as easy as I breathe, etc.

Ex: I’m happy and grateful because I’m thin, healthy and strong. I’m an active person and I love exercising and eating healthy food.

Ex: I’m happy and grateful now that I found a person I feel good and happy with.

Remember: from REALITY to LIMITING BELIEFS and from LIMITING BELIEFS to POSITIVE STATEMENTS. This is true, as well: once you start changing your limiting beliefs it is CRUCIAL that you take the step from positive statements to ACTIONS, otherwise no change will occur. But do not overthink about it, because what’s magical about this all is that it’s much easier when you act with your mind on your side, and your actions will flow in an almost natural way. Los clientes que contraten los servicios de Seven Selection no tendrán que preocuparse de nada, solo de disfrutar. Esa es la filosofía de esta una nueva empresa dedicada a la organización de eventos con sede en Corralejo y con las miras puestas más allá de tierras majoreras. Jusep López, dj desde hace diez años, lleva tiempo dedicado a la hostelería y al mundo de la noche, tras trabajar en lugares míticos de Corralejo como el Tequila Beach, Waikiki y Banana decidió saltar al vacío y empezar un nuevo proyecto. Encontró un aliado perfecto en Ubay Marrero. Los dos son los padres de Seven Selection, un proyecto con solo tres meses de vida, pero que ya empieza a dar los primeros pasos en el mundo de la organización de eventos. «Nos gusta meternos en follones. Crecer y complicarnos», aseguran. De ahí que la idea les diera la adrenalina suficiente para no dejarla escapar. Seven Selection surgió con vistas a cubrir unas necesidades que en Corralejo no se estaban cubriendo hasta ahora, como sonorizar e iluminar eventos debidamente y con gusto. La empresa ofrece packs de iluminación, sonido, video y foto. Pero si el cliente necesita algo más, Jusep y Ubay se encargan de encontrarlo. Entre sus virtudes está

la de quitarles las preocupaciones a sus clientes y es que todo aquello que necesiten quienes contratan sus servicios para la realización de cualquier tipo de evento, desde un catering, música en vivo, dj, perfomance… hasta un fotógrafo, lo encontrarán en esta empresa. Jusep como dj se encarga de la música; Ubay, la persona minuciosa del proyecto, es el responsable de que todo esté en su lugar controlando hasta el último detalle. A pesar de llevar solo tres meses bregando en el negocio, Seven Selection ya se ha dejado ver en importantes eventos como el Fin de Año Hindú o Diwali Ball, una celebración con la que la comunidad indostánica da la bienvenida al nuevo año, o la fiesta de Halloween en Salitre Beach Club donde instalaron su propia cabina. También han estado en fiestas privadas y en cumpleaños, como el de la revista Macaronesia, donde fueron los encargados del sonido y la iluminación de la misma. A largo plazo, Jusep y Ubay sueñan con poder hacer un

festival con sello propio. «Nuestra intención es tener el material suficiente para elaborar un festival con iluminación, sonido y artistas sin tener que subcontratar nada». Mientras tanto, ofertan sus servicios para organizar eventos, como bodas y celebraciones similares, y están trabajando con distintos hoteles para instalar las cabinas de djs en sus salas de fiestas. También, aprovechando el filón cinematográfico de Fuerteventura, ofrecen sus servicios a productoras de cine y publicidad, a las que pueden apoyar en sus rodajes con aporte de equipo, servicios de fotografía y vídeo. Las virtudes de Seven Selection son la organización, concisión y planificación de los trabajos. Así evitan los agobios que uno tiene cuando quiere planificar una celebración o fiesta perfecta y aportan la tranquilidad que uno necesita para disfrutar de sus eventos.

The customers who contract Seven Selection’s services do not have to worry about nothing but enjoying themselves. This is the philosophy of this new company specialised in event management, based in Corralejo and with sights set beyond the borders of Fuerteventura. Jusep López, with 10 years of experience as a dj, has been into the world of night life and hotels for a long time. After working in some legendary places in Corralejo, such as Tequila Beach, Waikiki and Banana, he decided to leap into the void and start a new project. He found the perfect ally in Ubay Marrero. The two of them are the creators of Seven Selection, a 3-month old project that is already moving the first steps into the world of event management. «We like to mess around, to grow and make our lives more challenging», they state. So they came up with the idea and the necessary adrenaline to put it into action and not to pass it up. Seven Selection was born out of the necessity to satisfy some needs that hadn’t been fulfilled till now, like installing sound and

lighting systems during events properly and with good taste. The company offers packages including lighting, sound, video and photo services. But if customers need something else, Jusep and Ubay will take charge of it. One of their virtues is to take the worry out of their customers and, whatever they may need for any kind of event –caterings, live music, djs, performances, photographers–, they will find it in this company. Jusep is in charge of the music; Ubay, the meticulous person of the project, is responsible for checking that all the details, even the tiniest ones, are in their right place. Even though they’ve been buckling down to it for three months only, Seven Selection has already worked in some important events such as the Hindu New Year’s Eve or Diwali Ball, a party the Hindustani community uses to welcome the new year, or the Halloween party in Salitre Beach Club, where they placed their own booth. They were also present in birthday or private parties, like in Macaronesia’s, where they were in charge of the sound and lighting systems.

In the long run, Jusep and Ubay dream about organising their own festival. «Our intention is to have material enough to create a festival with lighting, sound and artists without having to outsource at all». Meanwhile, they offer their services to organise events such as weddings and similar celebrations, and they are working with different hotels to put dj booths in their party rooms. Moreover, making the most of the gold mine of cinema in Fuerteventura, they offer their services to film and advertising production companies, supporting them during filming with equipment, photo and video services… The virtues of Seven Selection are the organization, concision and planning of their works. Érase una vez un muchacho renacentista emperretado en demostrar que la naturaleza de su tierra volcánica era la mayor de las vanguardias del mundo. Érase una vez un artista que inventó una estética y, casi, casi, una isla.

La rehabilitación de viviendas antiguas, hecha con la sabiduría de quien sabe de dónde vienen los vientos, frente a la obsesión por construir más habitaciones y más plantas y más alto y más rentable. La limpieza inmaculada de la naturaleza, frente a la costumbre de verter los desechos del progreso allá donde no se vean. El orgullo del campesino, del malpaís y de las jareas tendidas al sol frente al complejo de inferioridad de una isla sufridora, de una tierra quemada por el sol y por el hambre. César Manrique quiso contagiar su mirada de Lanzarote a todo el mundo. Quiso enseñar a ver la belleza del basalto a los que sólo miraban de reojo y veían un filo cortante. Aquel chinijo tardón, contestatario y fulminante, que estudió lo que quiso en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, quiso también convertir la más oriental de las Canarias en una república independiente de la utopía. LA DESCONOCIDA OBRA MANRIQUEÑA EN ARRECIFE Es difícil ver huella alguna de César Manrique en una ciudad con los problemas estructurales que tiene la capital de Lanzarote: un casco histórico menguado por la especulación, unas calles trazadas con la mano urgente y apisonadora del desarrollismo, un espacio público he.18

cho unos zorros por el bloqueo institucional actual y la herencia de gobiernos municipales corruptos… En el edificio de la actual Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), sin cartel que lo avise, pueden contemplarse una de las primeras pinturas de César. Son los murales que creó en 1950 para la cafetería y el restaurante del Parador de Turismo de Arrecife, reconvertido hoy en aulas de estudio. Son alegorías del viento, la pesca y la vendimia encarnadas por campesinos graníticos que parecen salidos de una leyenda o de la mente de Pablo Picasso. Años antes había pintado ya los del Casino de Arrecife, hoy Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz. Con el paso de los años pintaría murales en muchos sitios de Madrid (los míticos cines Princesa, el aeropuerto de Barajas, el hotel Fénix, las oficinas del Banco Guipuzcoano…) y, por supuesto, de su isla natal: el que hizo en los años 60 en el Casino Club Náutico de Arrecife y sigue presidiendo su salón principal; el del Restaurante El Risco, en Famara, que sigue homenajeando a los pescadores que antaño subían a diario el risco para vender su mercancía fresca; uno muy particular, en piedra volcánica y para un edificio religioso, la Ermita de Máguez, que sólo puede verse en horario de misa; el de la fundación que lleva su nombre en Tahiche, donde construyó su estudio integrado en burbujas de lava...

Pero regresemos a Arrecife. Aquí participó en la decoración del parador, en la disposición de bancos, parterres, y elementos decorativos de la plaza de Las Palmas y en el diseño de los jardines del Hospital Insular, que hubieron de acondicionarse para la visita del dictador Francisco Franco. También diseñó el parque infantil del Parque Ramírez Cerdá, que sigue en pie, pero con la piedra dañada, el estanque seco, las teselas rotas y las plantas muy regulares junto a unos columpios modernos. Su aventura en el Centro Polidimensional El Almacén (o cómo reconvertir una casa tradicional en un espacio de vanguardia y experimentación) merece un capítulo aparte, que debe empezar leyéndose en el propio espacio, hoy centro de innovación cultural del Cabildo de Lanzarote. OBRA PÚBLICA Y CONCIENCIA AMBIENTALISTA Ya en 1953 sus obras eran compradas por coleccionistas que querían añadir un Manrique a su colección de Paul Klees. La carrera del lanzaroteño es meteórica y renacentista. Su estudio en Madrid es una fiesta de arte y tertulia constante por la que pasan diplomáticos o artistas como Jorge Oteiza. Un 25 de junio de 1965 regresa de Nueva York para pasar el verano en casa. Es entonces cuando el diálogo con un equipo de personas en su misma sintonía da como resultado los Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo (Jameos del Agua en un tradicional espacio de excursiones y asaderos, el Mirador del Río en vez de unas antiguas baterías de guerra, el Monumento al Campesino, el restaurante El Diablo de Timanfaya, el Museo Internacio-

nal de Arte Contemporáneo de Lanzarote en un castillo de otro siglo, el Jardín de Cactus en una antigua cantera convertida en vertedero…). César Manrique es director artístico de esta obra pública que a su vez se convierte en un ejemplo fascinante de integración arte-naturaleza. La obra desborda ecología y amor por la tierra, dos posiciones comunes que comparten gente como el maestro Jesús Soto —diseñador de la Cueva de los Verdes y de la Ruta de los Volcanes—, el capataz de obra Luis Morales o el artista Ildefonso Aguilar, algunas de las muchas personas que también participan en un proyecto colectivo que puso en valor el singular paisaje de Lanzarote y que quiso encaminar la isla hacia una economía sostenible y respetuosa, más vinculada con la ecología, la vanguardia artística y la ciencia, que con los eventos, los paninis y el éxito de la cifra del turismo convencional. Su pintura primero figurativa, luego abstracta y matérica, sus juguetes de viento que salpican las rotondas de la isla, el omnipresente imagotipo que diseñó para el Patronato de Turismo de Lanzarote, el diablo de Timanfaya… Es difícil estar en Lanzarote y no ver por todos lados a César y a una utopía en ©Fundación César Manrique estado de letargo.

THE UTOPIA MANRIQUE DREW ON THE 29TH PARALLEL Text: M.J. Tabar

Once upon a time there was a Renaissance boy who was set on demonstrating that the nature of his volcanic land was the greatest of the avant-gardes of the world. Once upon a time there was an artist who invented a new aesthetic and, almost, an island. The restoration of old dwellings –carried out with the wisdom of someone who knows where the winds come from–, against the obsession of building more rooms and more floors and more heights and more profits. The immaculate purity of Nature, against the habit of dumping the wastes of progress where they cannot be seen. The pride of the peasant, of the land covered in karst and of the jareas –the salty and dried fishes hung out in the sun–, against the inferiority complex of a suffering island, of a land burnt by the sun and the hunger. César Manrique wanted to pass his perception of Lanzarote on to everybody. He wanted to teach how to see beauty in the basalt to those who just looked askance at it and saw a cutting edge. That tardy boy from the Chinijo archipelago, who was controversial and fulminant, and studied what he wanted at the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy, also wanted to turn the most oriental island of the Canaries in an independent republic of utopia.

THE UNKNOWN MANRIQUE’S WORK IN ARRECIFE It’s difficult to see any trace of César Manrique in a city with the structural problems that Lanzarote’s capital city has: the old own shrunk by speculation, the streets traced by the urgent and razing hand of developmentalism, a public space in an awful state because of the present institutional block and the heritage of corrupt city governments… In the building of the present National Distance Education University (UNED), without a sign informing it, some of the first César’s paintings can be contemplated. They are the murals he created in 1950 for the cafeteria and the restaurant of the Parador de Turismo de Arrecife, an old state-run tourist hotel now reconverted into lecture rooms. They portray allegories of the wind, the fishing and the grape harvest, embodied by granitic peasants who look as if they come out of a legend or of Pablo Picasso’s mind. Some years before, he had already painted murals for the Casino of Arrecife, now Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz. Over the years he painted murals in many places in Madrid (the legendary Cine Princesa, Barajas airport, Hotel Fénix, the offices in Banco Guipuzcoano…) and, of course, in his native island: the one he painted in the 60’s that dominates the main hall of the Casino Club Náutico in Arrecife; the one in El Risco restaurant in Famara, which keeps on paying tribute to those fishermen who, in years gone by, used to climb the cliff daily to sell their fresh fish; the very special one, in volcanic stone, in the religious building of the Ermita de Máguez, that can only be seen during mass time; the one in the foundation that carries his name in Tahiche, where he built his studio in between lava bubbles… But let’s go back to Arrecife. Here he participated in the

decoration of the Parador, in the disposition of the benches, flower gardens and decorative elements of Las Palmas’ square and in the design of the Hospital Insular gardens, that had to be prepared for the visit of dictator Francisco Franco. He also designed the children playground in Parque Ramírez Cerdá, which is still standing, but its stone is damaged, the pond is empty, the tesserae are broken, the plants are ordinary and close to some modern swings. His adventure in the Centro Polidimensional El Almacén (or how to restructure a traditional house into a place for avant-garde and experimentation) is worth a chapter on its own, whose reading has to start in the space itself, which is now a centre of cultural innovation of the Cabildo de Lanzarote. PUBLIC WORKS AND ENVIRONMENTALIST CONSCIOUSNESS As early as 1953 his works were bought by collectors who wanted to add a Manrique artwork to their collection of Paul Klee’s. The career of the artist from Lanzarote is meteoric and renaissance-oriented. His studio in Madrid is a constant celebration of art and social gathering frequented by diplomats and artists as Jorge Oteiza. On 25th of June of 1965 he left New York to spend summer holidays at home. This is when the talks with a group of people in his same wave length produce results such as the Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism (Jameos del Agua in a traditional space for excursions and barbecues, Mirador del Río instead of an ancient military base, the Monument to the Peasant, restaurant El Diablo in Timanfaya, the International Contemporary Art Museum in a castle of centuries ago, Jardín de Cactus in an old quarry converted into a dumping site…). César Manrique is the artistic director of these public works that came to be a fascinating example of integration between art and nature. They are brimming with ecology and love for the earth, two common positions he shares with people like master Jesús Soto –designer of Cueva de los Verdes and Ruta de los Volcanes–, foreman Luis Morales or artist Ildefonso Aguilar. They are just some of the many people who participate in a collective project that pointed out the value of the special landscape of Lanzarote and that wanted to guide the island towards a sustainable and respectful economy, more connected with ecology, artistic avant-garde and science, rather than with events, paninis and the considerable success of conventional tourism. His painting –first figurative, later abstract and materic–, his wind toys spread on the roundabouts of the island, the omnipresent imagotype he drew for the Lanzarote Centre for Tourism, the Timanfaya devil… it’s difficult to be in Lanzarote and not to see César and a utopia in its lethargic state in every corner.
