El Queso Majorero es un queso graso de aroma intenso, de elaboración tanto artesanal como industrial, que por su calidad ha merecido importantes reconocimientos, tanto dentro como fuera de nuestras fronteras, obteniendo la Denominación de Origen el 16 de febrero de 1996. Es un queso de pasta prensada, elaborado con leche de cabra de la raza majorera —con adición eventual, cuando se destina a la maduración, de hasta un máximo de un 15% de leche de oveja canaria—. El secreto principal de la elaboración del queso se debe a la excelente calidad de la leche de la cabra majorera, animal muy resistente que produce una leche densa, aromática y grasa (unos 2 litros y medio al día), libre de impurezas, calostros, productos medicamentosos y conservantes que puedan influir negativamente en la elaboración, maduración y conservación del queso. Un poco de historia En Fuerteventura es habitual encontrar cabras libres y visibles por toda la geografía isleña, de ahí que este animal se haya convertido en el icono representativo de la Isla. El nombre de Queso Majorero —como el gentilicio del lugar— deriva del término aborigen que definía parte del territorio de la antigua Fuerteventura, Maxorata, en los años previos a la conquista; tiempos difíciles, duros, donde el queso debió de ocupar un lugar preferente en la alimentación de los antiguos pobladores, tal como puede verse reflejado en los testimonios de los colonizadores. Uno de estos escritos «Le Canarien», donde se narra la expedición de los normandos que llegaron en 1402 a la Isla, deja clara constancia de la existencia de gran can.4

En caso de salazón húmeda el queso permanece como máximo 24h. en una solución salina. 6º Madurado: este proceso puede llevarse a cabo en salas o cámaras, donde permanecen un mínimo de 8 días. Durante estos períodos de maduración se aplicarán las prácticas de volteo, limpieza y untado (pimentón, gofio o aceite) hasta que el queso adquiera las características tradicionales.

She bought her first board in 1996 and then she started to travel, until in 1998 she got to Tenerife. She was returning from Cape Verde, where she had been trying to reach one of her dreams at that time: to surf Punta Preta; but the conditions didn’t allow her to reach it, and she, together with her companion, set off towards the Canary Islands. At the end of 1999 she gets to Fuerteventura, and she realises, after endless travels, this is the ideal place to settle down. She defines herself as a person moved by passions, and maybe the most important of them all —her passion for surf— has taken her from one place to another in search of her personal project, which starts becoming true nowadays.

Llanuras.

Fuerteventura de ayer, de hoy... ¿de mañana? Nada es lo mismo en estas cuatro llanuras resecas. Olvidada a su suerte y a su muerte, tierra de desgracia de aquellos desterrados al olvido. Sin memoria y sin recuerdos conscientes. Punta a punta de cemento mis pies descalzos se hunden entre tanta mierda y corbatas. La incultura de esta cultura de ciegos, sordos y mudos me revienta los tímpanos, ensangra mis ojos llaga mis entrañas.

Mi mano la tengo agarrada a aquellos que creen en la magia de la isla que no sólo tiene playas de arena blanca, sol en las no-temporadas, políticos, corbatas y rayas. La Plaza de nadie

Es alucinante la cantidad de gente que hay trabajando en esta isla sin contrato. Los empresarios se aprovechan de la situación que estamos viviendo para tener a sus trabajadores sin contratar y con sueldos de risa; y si uno no quiere el curro ya lo hará otro. ¿Y las inspecciones de trabajo?, ¿están sobornados los inspectores?

El pasado mes de diciembre fui a pasear por la Montaña de la Arena, en La Oliva, y encontré el cadáver de dos perros atados y abandonados tras un muro de piedra. De verdad que «cuanto más conozco a los humanos más amo a mi perro».

Vivimos y tenemos nuestros negocios alrededor de la Plaza Patricio Calero (Corralejo) y creemos que a esta plaza se le podría dar un poco más de vida, quizás poniendo algún mercadillo o realizando alguna otra actividad en ella. Actualmente es un sitio de paso y no está cogiendo muy buena fama. ¿Podría hacerse algo? Vecinos de Corralejo.

When did you start skateboarding and why? I started in the year 2002, in Barcelona. When I returned from Lima I could find no waves, so I started skateboarding. Do you practise any other sports? Snowboard, surf, I like football very much and I’d like to learn some other water sports. What’s the best place you have ever skated? I have skated in a lot of skate parks in Europe, and no doubt that in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the best one: Giant industrial premises with 3 different height bowls and a small slope, all wooden, which were interconnected... it was amazing! Have you ever had any dangerous falls? I almost break my elbow for lack of protection in a half pipe in France. Like any other sports, skate has its danger, so I always recommend the use of knee pads, elbow pads and helmet. Why did you come to Fuerteventura? Because I was tired of the city; I came with the idea of catching waves, but I prefer skating, and I found out that Fuerteventura is the perfect island to skate, as the weather is perfect. Where and who do you skate with? The problem is where to skate, there aren´t good areas in this island. I usually go to the bowl in La Oliva, which is near, although I don’t really know whether that is a bowl or a kind of square built by the town hall. Whatever it is, it’s good enough to make up any tricks. I’m also building a small slope at home, and it will hopefully be ready by the end of this month. I go skating with anyone who fancies coming along. What do you think about skate parks in Fuerteventura? We have the skate park in Puerto del Rosario, but it has been closed because of works for a long time and I haven’t had the chance to skate there yet. Some friends from Barcelona built

another skate park in Parque Holandés and it’s wonderful, but as far as I know it has already been finished but it won’t be open to the public until local elections. I have also heard they will open another skate park in El Parque Botánico that is being built in Corralejo, but I have no idea about what it will look like. I hope it will be true and that it’ll be built as it should be… A skate park must be thought of and built by skaters; we are the ones who know about the size of the bends and about plans. It’s better to ask for some advice than being putting your foot in it all the time, ha, ha, ha. I’m speaking from my own experience… It seems there aren’t many places to skate... There aren’t, indeed, and it’s a pity. If we compare Fuerteventura to other islands, here there’s nowhere to skate. From my point of view surf and skate go hand in hand, and there being so many people who come to the island to practise these sports I find that skate has been left aside when it could be another attraction in Fuerteventura. Are you thinking about doing anything in order to change this? I’ve already started. I am cooperating with Roberto, who owns the skate shop Inercia, in Puerto del Rosario. I advise children and people who want to skate about boards, axles, wheels… We want to promote skateboarding by organizing events, competitions, and anything we find in our way. We also want to open a school where children can learn how to skate and have a good time. Casi todos nos hemos parado alguna vez sorprendidos, maravillados o irritados delante de un graffiti o una «pintada». Los hay para todos los gustos y colores, desde auténticas obras de arte, protesta social, mensajes de amor… hasta pinturas de aspecto amenazante, que dan miedo de lo bien hechas que están. Con la llegada de internet y las nuevas tecnologías, los artistas urbanos más prolíficos (algunos de ellos antes simplemente «graffiteros») han traspasado fronteras y han entrado en los hogares y las aulas de arte, además de intervenir, sin previo aviso, en espacios públicos para sorpresa de viandantes y ciudadanos de la forma más curiosa o provocativa. Las fronteras conceptuales del arte se han abierto todavía más, descubriendo a tremendísimos artistas con unas motivaciones nada convencionales, ya que no son artistas convencionales pero sí ARTISTAS con mayúsculas. El inquietante y archiconocido Banksy nos sumerge en el mundo del graffiti y del Arte Urbano de guerrilla a través de un curioso personaje (Thierry Güetta), al que utiliza de forma irónica para, una vez más, darnos una lección magistral sobre la incipiente aparición de pseudoartistas y la perversión del arte urbano y/o contemporáneo. De paso, nos muestra el auténtico «Road map» del arte urbano mundial, desde NYC hasta París, pasando por Bcn por supuesto. Space Invader (París), con su inspiración en el Rubik’s cube o Shepard Fairey (OBEY), con su experimento de repetición de imágenes icónicas (lleva más de un millón y medio en un montón de países), además de Borf, Wendy Asher… os dejarán boquiabiertos con su obra. Película imprescindible, con doble lectura como su obra. El quién es quién del urban art. Interesantísimo y genial documento, contado desde el siempre inquietante prisma de este artista de guerrilla que ha revolucionado el mundo del graffiti y del arte contemporáneo.

Almost every one of us has some time stopped amazed, astonished, or irritated in front of a graffiti. You find graffiti for all the tastes, from authentic works of art, social protest, love messages… to threatening paintings so well done that they are really frightening. With the arrival of the internet and the new technologies, the most prolific urban artists (some of them were simple graffiti creators before) have crossed boundaries and have got into art homes and classrooms, in addition to trespassing public places to the surprise of pedestrians and citizens in the most interesting and provocative way. The conceptual boundaries of art have opened even more, and great artists, with nonconventional motivations have been found out, as they aren’t conventional artists, but ARTISTS in capital letters. The haunting and well-known Banksy plunges us into the graffiti world and the world of Urban Art of guerrillas through an interesting character (Theirry Güetta), ironically used to give us, once more, a masterly lesson about the incipient appearance of pseudo-artists and the corruption of the urban and contemporary art. It also shows us the authentic Road map of the urban art’s world, from NYC to Paris, not forgetting Barcelona, of course. Space Invader (Paris), inspired by the Rubik’s cube or by Shepard Fairey (OBEY), with his experiment of repetition of iconic images (more than a million and a half of them in several countries) as well as Borf, Wendy Asher… will astonish you with their works. During all her childhood and adolescence she thought she’d study Fine Arts and that she’d make her living by painting in a cosy loft in a city like Paris. But when she finished high school she abandoned this romantic idea and went to Barcelona in order to study Graphic Design at the «Escola Superior de Disseny Elisava». Very thankful to her parents, who offered her this opportunity, Erica has become an artist who combines Painting and Graphic Arts with an explosion of colours and a liveliness that cannot go unnoticed. What is Art to you? I’d say that the art is the manifestation of that which the artist wants to express, touching the sensitivity of some of us. In my opinion, they who have something to offer to this world, through any means of expression, are artists, regardless of the recognition they may achieve. When did you start illustrating professionally? I have never devoted to it professionally. I have been doing little things I have not looked for: the illustration for the magazine Barcelona Educació, three illustrations for some Freixenet on-line Christmas cards… But it’s only now that I’m devoting more time to illustration and that I have more projects in mind. What do you like doing best, illustration or design? I prefer illustration, no doubt.
