EL TOSTÓN LA DEFENSORA DE EL COTILLO
LA TORRE DE EL TOSTÓN
Levantada hace tres siglos para defender el muelle de El Cotillo de ataques piratas, la majestuosa Torre de El Tostón es hoy un testigo evidente de la historia de Fuerteventura ubicada en un enclave natural de gran valor. EL COTILLO HISTÓRICO Nos encontramos en el siglo XVII, el inicio de la conquista de la isla de Fuerteventura se remonta unos doscientos años atrás. Al noroeste de la isla, en medio de un paisaje de costa salvaje y virgen, ha empezado a surgir, por su posición estratégica y su pequeño muelle natural, un asentamiento pesquero y comercial: el Puerto del Roque, que posteriormente recibiría el nombre de Puerto del Tostón. Este pequeño muelle perdido en la costa norteña de la geografía insular —germen del actual pueblo de El Cotillo, uno de los lugares con mayor encanto de Fuerteventura— fue adquiriendo por aquel entonces cierta importancia debido a la pesca y al comercio de productos como la cochinilla, el ganado y los cereales. El trajín comercial atrajo la atención de piratas ingleses, berberiscos y franceses y, como consecuencia, se planteó la necesidad de construir una torre defensiva para sortear los ataques a los que, con frecuencia, se veían sometidas las embarcaciones del puerto.
En el año 1700, por orden del Capitán General de Canarias, el arquitecto Claudio L´isle se hace cargo de la construcción de dos torres defensivas en Fuerteventura: La Torre de San Buenaventura —situada en la localidad de Caleta de Fuste, en la costa este de la isla— y la Torre de El Tostón, denominada en un principio Torre de Nuestra Señora del Pilar y San Miguel.
La construcción responde a una estructura circular de dos pisos. El bajo hacía las veces de almacén y el piso principal con cubierta abovedada, al que se accede por una escalera exterior, servía de alojamiento para hasta doce hombres. Una pequeña escalera desde la estancia principal asciende hacia la explanada superior, donde estaban los cañones de hierro que defendían el puerto. Para la obra se utilizó piedra extraída de una cantera del mismo pueblo cercana a la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, patrona de El Cotillo. Es habitual la creencia de que la Torre de El Tostón se construyó sobre una fortificación anterior, encargada en el siglo XV por el conquistador Jean de Béthencourt, y que recibió el nombre de Castillo de Rico Roque. Sin embargo, algunas investigaciones contradicen esta idea exponiendo que la definición que Le Canarien —una crónica escrita por frailes franciscanos sobre la expedición de la conquista de las Islas Canarias— recoge sobre el emplazamiento de la fortaleza requerida por Betancourt, «en la dura pendiente de una montaña, sobre un manantial, a una legua del mar», no coincide con el lugar donde se ubica la Torre de El Tostón.

Actualmente, visitar la Torre de El Tostón es posible y recomendable, pues se trata de una construcción imponente en medio de un paisaje natural de gran valor, un testigo de la importancia que El Cotillo tuvo en otro tiempo y un espacio cultural, pues alberga exposiciones de arte contemporáneo de toda índole. Pero la verdad es que sólo con la visión de la costa que ofrece la «azotea» de la torre, la visita merece la pena.

EL TOSTÓN TOWER HISTORICAL EL COTILLO We are in the XVII C, the beginning of Fuerteventura Island conquest goes back about 200 years. In the Northwest of the island, in the middle of a wild and unspoilt coastal landscape, a fishing and trade-related settlement has started to arise due to its strategical location and its little natural dock: «El Puerto del Roque», which later on would be called «Puerto del Tostón». This little dock, lost in the northern coast of the island geography —sprout of the current village of El Cotillo, one of the most charming places in Fuerteventura— was becoming quite important by then, due to the fishing activity and the trade of certain products like cochineal, cattle and cereal. The growing trade activity drew the attention of Berber, English and French pirates and, as a result, the need to build
In the year 1700, Ordered by the General Captain of the Canary Islands, the architect Claudio L’Isle organises the building of two defence towers in Fuerteventura: San Buenaventura Tower —located in Caleta de Fuste, in the Eastern coast of the island— and El Tostón Tower, formerly called «Torre de Nuestra Señora del Pilar y San Miguel». The construction is a two-storey circular structure. The ground floor was used as a warehouse and the main floor, with a vaulted roof and to which you could access through an outdoor stairway, was used as a lodging for about twelve men. A small staircase from the main floor goes up to the terrace, where the iron cannons that defended the dock were. To build it they used stones extracted from the village quarry, next to the church of «Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje», patron saint of El Cotillo. It’s usually believed that the tower of «El Tostón» was built on a previous fortress, ordered by the conqueror Jean de
Béthencourt in the Xvth century, and it was called the Castle of «Rico Roque». However, some research oppose to this idea by stating that the definition collected in «Le Canarien» —a chronicle written by Franciscan monks about the expedition of the conquest of the Canary Islands where the location of the fortress ordered by Betancout is described («en la dura pendiente de una montaña, sobre un manantial, a una legua del mar»)— doesn’t match the place where «El Tostón» Tower is located.
HISTORICAL MONUMENT OF CULTURAL INTEREST In 1949 it was declared historical monument of cultural interest. At present, it is possible and recommendable to visit «El Tostón» Tower, as it is an impressive construction in the middle of a natural landscape of great value, and a witness of the importance that El Cotillo had in older times apart from being a cultural space, as it hosts exhibitions of contemporary art of any kind. But to tell the truth, only the sight of the coastline from the terrace of the tower makes the visit well worthwhile.

En la época en que Alfredo empezó a surfear, cuando tenía 15 años, no había nadie, ni turistas ni extranjeros surfeando, en realidad dice entre risas que en «El Cotillo no había ni donde quedarse, eran cuatro casas y mucha arena». En esa época el windsurf empezó a despuntar en Fuerteventura, eran pocos pero apasionados, y eran los extranjeros los que venían a practicarlo. Fue su primo Benjamín, para Alfredo el primer surfero de El Cotillo, el que le animó a practicar windsurf, pero el material .6
era muy caro y rompible y tras un año se pasaron al surf. Primero surfeaban con la misma tabla del windsurf, «en aquella época aquí no había tablas ni donde comprarlas». Su primera tabla se la trajo Lorenzo desde Inglaterra, un inglés que ayudó mucho con el material a los primero locales, que le costó unas 50.000 pesetas de la época (300€). «Como amarradera usábamos la soga del windsurf y no sabes como jalaba aquello». Aquí no surfeaba nadie por aquel entonces, no había
vídeos ni nuevas tecnologías, eran él y su primo, más tarde se animó su hermano y con el tiempo también un grupito de 6 o 7 de Corralejo. Al principio solo se tiraban en Piedra Playa porque no tenían coche, alguna vez iban a Corralejo a Bristol, la ola del Waikiki, Punta Elena,… pero tenían que ir a dedo y había tan poca gente que hasta se controlaban los horarios de los pocos de El Cotillo que trabajan en los hoteles de las Dunas para poder volver con alguno. Cuando consiguieron coche fueron poco a poco con-
quistando el norte, primero Bristol, luego Generoso y más tarde El Hierro… Nos cuenta Alfredo que no había carretera del Norte, era un arenal, pero tenían tanta afición que se cogían unos cartones y las tablas de surf, y cuando se iban enterrando usaban los cartones para salir, podían llegar a tardar dos horas hasta llegar a El Hierro. Su primer coche era de manivela y como la gasolina había que conseguirla lejos, en Tefia, usaban el petróleo de los quinqués, y así, a buscar olas. Para Alfredo surfear en aquellos años era increíble. Se
iban a las verbenas en bermudas y cholas con las tablas sobre el escarabajo con el que andaban y la gente alucinaba tanto por sus «pintas» como porque nunca se habían visto tablas. Al poco llegaron las primeras tiendas de surf, —la del padre de Salo y Noworkteam—, que les facilitaban material y organizaban algún campeonato. Así, el surf ya empezó a coger carrerilla en la isla. Lo recuerda como una época dorada, por la afición y el buen ambiente dentro y fuera del agua. Se animaban unos a otros y «cuando venía algu-www.vacaazul.es-

51 YEARS OLD • BORN IN EL ROQUE Alfredo is a professional fisherman of the third generation of his family. Since he was very young his life has been bound to the sea – his father always took him to look for bait to fish - ; later on, surf captivated him and nowadays he’s one of the great surf veterans in El Cotillo who still surfs….
no de Gran Canaria y le veíamos hacer alguna maniobra alucinábamos y así era como aprendíamos, intentábamos repetirla y repetirla». Antes de eso no hacían maniobras ni giros, se tiraban de frente y cogían algún tubo, eso sí, les gustaban las olas grandes y con fuerza. Sus picos favoritos de aquellos años eran Esquinzo y Agustinos, también El Hierro. Fue precisamente cuando empezaron a controlar el tema de las mareas, para tirarse en Agustinos necesitaban agua suficiente para no machacarse en las rocas. Ahora se tira habitualmente en Punta Gorda, muy consciente de que las cosas han cambiado mucho. Hay mucha gente en el agua, antes estaban solos. «Pero no todo son cosas malas, ahora hay infinidad de tablas y material de calidad, se sabe muchísimo de surf, de técnica, veo un montón de vídeos, la posibilidad de conocer con antelación las predicciones, tiendas de surf, .8
gente que vive del surf… el desarrollo nos dio trabajo a todos». Y es que en El Cotillo Alfredo pasó malas épocas precisamente por falta de trabajo; con 16 años le tocó ir a pescar una buena temporada al banco sahariano, jornadas de 15 días metidos en un barquito pequeño; cuando tenía 22 años le toco volver a África,… Ahora por el contrario, la vida ha mejorado mucho, compra siempre lo último en material de surf, al igual que para su barco con el que sale a pescar cuando la mar se lo permite, siempre con la última tecnología, «lo que no tenía en aquel tiempo lo tengo ahora». Alfredo nos confiesa que aunque está un poco desganado con el surf porque hay mucha gente en el agua, sigue teniendo la misma afición que cuando tenía 15 años y se enorgullece al contarnos que ahora es su hija la que también tienen una gran afición y quién le cogerá el relevo generacional.
When Alfredo started to surf, at the age of 15, there was nobody, tourists or foreigners, surfing. In truth, he says giggling, «In El Cotillo there wasn’t even a place to stay, just four houses and a great deal of sand». Alfredo states that his cousin, Benjamin, was the first surfer in El Cotillo, the one who encouraged him to practise windsurf, but the equipment was expensive and very fragile, so one year later they both changed to surf. In the beginning, they shared the windsurf board: «there were no more boards like that one, not a single shop to buy it». His first boards were brought by Lorenzo, an English man who helped the first surfers a lot with their material and it cost them 50.000 pts at those times (300€). «As a tie we used the windsurf rope, and you can’t imagine how it pulled». Nobody used to surf by then, there weren’t videos or new technologies, it was just him and his cousin, later on his brother and in time, a group of five or six people in Corralejo. In the beginning it was just in Piedra Playa that they surfed as they had no car; sometimes they went to «Corralejo», to «Bristol», the wave of «El Waikiki», «Punta Elena»…. But they had to hitch-hike and there were so few people that they even had to control the hours of those from El Cotillo who worked in Corralejo hotels to go to the Dunes and come back with some of them. When they could have a car, little by little they «conquered» the north, first «Bristol», then «Generoso», and later on «El Hierro»…. Alfredo says there were no roads in the north, just sand, but they were so keen on surfing that they drove there, and if the wheels got stuck in the sand they used some pieces of cardboard to get out; they could take even a couple of hours to get to «El Hierro».

Now he usually goes to «Punta Gorda», very aware that things have changed a lot. There are many people in the water and before they were alone. «But not everything is negative, now there are endless boards and quality material, there is better knowledge of surf, technique, I can watch a lot of videos, there are forecasts, surfing stores, people who live off surf… development provided work for everybody». When Alfredo arrived in El Cotillo he experienced bad times because of the lack of job; being 16 he had to go and fish in the Saharan Bank for a long while, days on a row in that little bank; when he turned 22 he had to go back to Africa….Now because of the opposite reason, life has improved a lot, he always buys the cutting-edge surfing and nautical material. Now he goes fishing with his vessel every time the weather allows him to, always with the latest technology: «what I couldn’t have at those time I have it now».
Their first car was a hand crank one, and as you had to go quite far away to get the petrol, in «Tefia», they used the petroleum for oil lamps, and thus they went in search of waves. It was incredible surfing at those times to Alfredo. They used to go to the open-air dance in their shorts and flip-flops, and people were astonished at their look and also because they had never seen surfboards before. A bit later the first stores opened, that of Salo’s father and Norworkteam, which provided them material and also organised some championship. That way, surf started to be trendy in the island. He remembers it as a golden time, for the good atmosphere in and out of the water. They encouraged one another, and» when someone came from Gran Canaria and the locals watched them performing some ticks we just got gobsmacked and that way we learnt, trying to do the same again and again». Before then, they could not play any ticks or turns, they just caught some tubes and went forward. For sure they liked big and powerful waves. Their favourite peaks at those years were «Esquinzo» and «Agustinos», also «El Hierro». It was then that they started to get a knowledge about tides; to surf in «Agustinos» you needed enough water not to get battered against the rocks.

MACARODENUNCIA_READERS’ COMPLAINTS La señora Dee Kendall-Williams y su esposo llegaron a Fuerteventura desde el Reino Unido para unas vacaciones hace más de 11 años, les gustó tanto el pueblo de El Cotillo y su comunidad que decidieron comprar un apartamento para venir 3 o 4 veces al año en busca de sol y de la belleza y la tranquilidad de sus paisajes. Pero hay algo que perturba la paz de este matrimonio, y es que día tras día en sus paseos por las hermosas playas de El Cotillo ven como sus arenas aparecen completamente contaminadas por numerosas colillas de fumadores irresponsables que no muestran ningún respeto por el medio ambiente. Intentan recoger algunas de estas colillas junto a otros tipos de basura, pero no es suficiente, les preocupa el futuro de esta impresionante isla y de nuestro planeta, les preocupa que la belleza de Fuerteventura se pueda preservar para generaciones venideras. En un correo electrónico, este matrimonio nos cuenta que colillas, plástico, papel, vidrio y latas se dejan regularmente contaminando cruelmente las playas. Inlcuso nos cuentan que esa misma semana que nos escribieron vieron a una mujer enterrando en la playa el pañal desechable que le acababa de quitar a su bebé junto con las toallitas que había usado para limpiarle. Nuestra lectora se acercó a hablar con esta mujer y finalmente la madre lo llevó a una papelera. Para ilustrar su relato nos envían una foto de las colillas que recogieron en un vaso de plástico que se encontró en la misma playa. Dedicó 10 minutos en un área circular de 10 metros de diámetro y pueden ver que el vaso rebosa. Hemos querido publicar su preocupación para intentar concienciar, la solución está en cada uno de nosotros.

Mrs Dee Kendall-Williams and her husband arrived in Fuerteventura from the UK to spend some holidays 11 years ago. They loved the village of El Cotillo and its community so much that they decided to buy an apartment to be able to come three of four times a year, searching for the sun, the beauty and peace and quiet of its landscapes. But something disturbed the peace of this couple: day after day, in their strolls along the wonderful beaches in El Cotillo they could see how their sand seemed to be completely polluted by several fag-ends of irresponsible smokers that showed no respect for the environment. They tried to pick up some of those fag-ends together with some other waste, but this isn’t enough. They are concerned about the future of this impressive island and our planet. They are worried about preserving the beauty of Fuerteventura for future generations. In an e-mail that they wrote to our magazine, this couple tells us that fag-ends are not the only problem. Plastic, paper, glass and tins are regularly left on the beaches and cruelly polluting them. They even told us that that very week they saw a woman burying the disposable diaper that she had just removed from her baby in the sand, together with the wet wipes she had used to clean it. Our reader approached this woman to talk to her and finally that woman took the diaper to the rubbish bin. To illustrate her story she sent us a picture of the fag-ends she collected in a plastic cup she found in the same beach. She dedicated ten minutes to pick up fag-ends in an area of ten meters of diameter and I could see the cup is full to the brim. We have wanted to publish their concern to try to make people aware: the solution is in everyone of us. In the village of Los Molinos there is a notice besides its beach with a message that seems to have a brutal logic:

How did the idea of the clinic come up? ALBERTO SARABIA HIERRO FOTÓGRAFO & BIÓLOGO 25 AÑOS • PUERTO DEL ROSARIO Biólogo, especializado en Biología Marina y fotógrafo, Alberto Sarabia, natural de Fuerteventura, es el ganador de nuestro concurso Macaroportada 2017 con una preciosa instantánea de un delfín disfrutando libremente de las aguas majoreras. ALBERTO Y EL MAR Tras acabar sus estudios solicitó una beca al Cabildo de Fuerteventura para elaborar un proyecto sobre cetáceos en Fuerteventura. Se centró en el Calderón Gris, una especie que se puede avistar en aguas de Fuerteventura durante todo el año cerca de la costa y sobre la que no hay demasiada investigación centrada en esta especie en concreto. En su proyecto se asoció con una empresa de avistamiento de cetáceos del norte de la isla con la que hizo salidas continuas durante los 6 meses que duró la beca. Aunque el periodo de estudio fue corto, en cuanto al ciclo de vida de los ejemplares se refiere, le sirvió para crear un catálogo de foto-identificación, analizando cada grupo y cada individuo, a través del control y fotografía .14

Finalizado el estudio sigue teniendo claro que lo que quiere hacer en relación a su carrera profesional es investigar, por lo que ha solicitado una ampliación de esta beca a la Reserva de la Biosfera para poder completar su proyecto a través de campañas científicas. Su fin último es la divulgación de las maravillosas especies que habitan nuestras aguas. «Fuerteventura es un sitio importantísimo y muy interesante para el estudio de cetáceos. Su proximidad al continente africano convierte esta área en un pasillo natural para las especies migrantes. Esto, unido a la latitud de las Islas Canarias, hace de esta región un lugar perfecto para el estudio de cetáceos, siendo una de las zonas del planeta con mayor número de especies, en la que podemos disfrutar de hasta 28 de las casi 90 especies que hay en todo el mundo». ALBERTO Y LA FOTOGRAFÍA Siempre le ha atraído la fotografía, un arte que le acompañó durante toda su carrera, sus prácticas y aquellas salidas al campo en las que debía registrar con su cá-
mara todos los pequeños detalles, despertando y perfeccionando su ojo fotográfico. Es totalmente autodidacta en esta disciplina y en su trabajo fotográfico vemos de todo, detalles de la naturaleza, paisajes, moda, fotografía creativa, fotografía nocturna… «Me encanta experimentar y probar nuevos campos». Define su fotografía como de líneas muy simples, para lo que Fuerteventura le presta un territorio ideal, sencillo pero lleno de contenido. Recientemente ganó el segundo premio de fotografía en color del Certamen Maxoarte 2017 que organiza la Consejería de Juventud del Cabildo de Fuerteventura, con una fotografía de la serie que ganó precisamente la portada de Macaronesia, un delfín común saliendo a superficie a respirar. «Es muy bonito que reconozcan tu trabajo al igual que la portada, tener una foto en una revista es una satisfacción súper grande». Esperamos y deseamos que siga investigando y cosechando éxitos tanto con su arte como con sus investigaciones.

BIOLOGIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER 25 YEARS OLD • PUERTO DEL ROSARIO Biologist, majored in marine biology, and also a photographer, Alberto Sarabia, born in Fuerteventura, is the winner of our contest Macaroportada 2017, with a wonderful snapshot of a dolphin enjoying the sea of Fuerteventura in freedom. ALBERTO AND THE SEA After taking his degree he applied for a grant to Fuerteventura’s Council, to elaborate a project about cetaceans in Fuerteventura. He focused on the Risso’s dolphin, a species of cetacean that can be spotted in Fuerventura’s waters all throughout the year near the coast and about which there isn’t much research. In his project he partnered with a whale-watching company in the north of the island with which he did continuous outings during the 6 months the grant lasted. Although the research period was short, bearing in mind the life cycles of the specimens, it was enough to create a catalogue of photo-identification, analysing each group and each specimen through the control and photography of their fins, as each of them is different. At the end of the research he keeps having no doubt that this is what he would like to do in his professional career, reason why he has applied for an extension of his grant to the Biosphere Reserve in order to complete his project through scientific research. His final aim is to spread the knowledge about the existence of these wonderful species that live in our waters. Fuerteventura is most important and interesting for the study of cetaceans. Its closeness to the African continent turns this area into a natural corridor for migratory species. This, together
with the latitude of the Canary Islands, makes this region become a perfect location for the study of cetaceans, being one of the areas in the planet with the largest quantity of species where we can enjoy 28 out of the 90 species in the whole world. ALBERTO AND PHOTOGRAPHY He’s always been attracted to photography, an art that has accompanied him during his whole career, his practices and those outings to the countryside where he had to register every single detail with his camera, awakening and letting his photographic eye improve. He’s a complete self-taught photographer and we can see a bit of everything in his photography: nature details, landscapes, fashion, creative photography, night-time photography‌ I love experiencing and trying new fields. He defines his photography as one of very simple lines, for which Fuerteventura has the ideal landscape, simple but full of content. Recently he has won the second prize of colour photography in the Certamen Maxoarte 2017 organised by the Youth Department of Fuerteventura Council, with a picture of the series that won the cover of Macaronesia, a common dolphin surfacing in order to breathe. It is really nice to have your work recognised: having a photo of yours in the cover of a magazine is a great satisfaction We hope and wish that he will keep researching and succeeding in his art and researches alike.

Mariana, su propietaria, estudió educación física pero inició su actividad profesional en un grupo empresarial internacional líder en el sector de la estética, donde llegó a dirigir a un grupo de 12 personas dedicado a la depilación láser y tratamientos adelgazantes, lo que le permitió adquirir una sólida experiencia práctica con las más modernas tecnologías y los protocolos más avanzados. A nivel formativo consolidó sus conocimientos con cursos y masters periódicos en tratamientos corporales, depilación láser, masajes… Con esta experiencia Mariana tenía claro que quería seguir dentro del sector de la belleza aportando sus conocimientos y apostando por equipamiento de última generación. ¿Qué diferencia a tu centro estética de los otros centros? For about three months we have had a new business in Lajares, a hairdresser’s and beauty centre located in the main street which has opted for the cutting-edge technology to offer the best services in beauty treatments.
