Sonidos Líquidos es un festival con identidad propia que marida lo mejor de la música independiente con los vinos de Lanzarote y su gastronomía, y todo ello en un entorno único como es La Geria y sus bodegas. La combinación de estos elementos junto al gran ambiente que se vive desde que pisas este singular paisaje en el mundo, lo hacen que sea unos de los festivales más especiales a nivel nacional. Desde la organización de Sonidos Líquidos están comprometidos con la sostenibilidad y el respeto al medio ambiente. Por esta razón, cada vez llevan a cabo más acciones para que la huella del festival sea mínima. Entre ellas, una de las más destacadas es el uso responsable del transporte por parte de los asistentes y ponen a disposición el servicio de guaguas para acudir a La Geria por 6€ ida y vuelta. También la utilización de energías renovables, la implementación de la recolección selectiva de basura o el uso de vehículos eléctricos para el traslado de los artistas, son otras de las medidas que se ponen en marcha para proteger este enclave tan hermoso y delicado. SONIDOS LÍQUIDOS 2019 LANZAROTE IS PREPARING FOR THE CELEBRATION OF MALVASÍA VOLCÁNICA WEEKEND, ON 7TH AND 8TH JUNE, WITH MORE THAN 12 HOURS OF LIVE MUSIC. Sonidos Líquidos is a festival with its own identity that combines the best of independent music with Lanzarote’s wines and gastronomy, in a unique environment such as La Geria and its wineries. The combination of these elements with the great atmosphere you feel once you set foot on this exceptional landscape makes the festival one of the most special at a national level. This year, the format is the same as in 2018, with 2 days of concerts. On Friday 7th June, Second — plus another band that will be announced soon — performs during the opening show in Arrecife. These concerts have free entry.

But this will just be the beginning, because on the next day and starting from 4 pm, La Geria is going to become a utopian stage ready to welcome the Spanish band Viva Suecia and the American !!! María Castañeyra Ruiz

LA ANTROPÓLOGA MAJORERA QUE PONE ROSTRO A LA HISTORIA por BILI PUIG DE LA BELLACASA María Castañeyra Ruiz, natural de Fuerteventura, estudió Historia del Arte y tras un Máster y sus tesis en Antropología Física —el estudio de los huesos— se fue especializando en Arqueología. A sus 35 años trabaja como Research Assistant —Asistente de Investigación— en la Universidad de Liverpool. Llegó a Inglaterra gracias a la Beca de la Fundación Canarias Doctor Manuel Morales y a su tesón: «se supone que debías tener un contacto previo con la Universidad de destino, pero yo fui a puerta fría. Tenía claro que quería hacer Reconstrucción Facial y en Liverpool estaba Caroline Wilkinson, una de las mejores del mundo en este campo». El momento también fue idóneo y es que, cuando escribió su solicitud a la Universidad, la artista y fotógrafa Francesca Philips se encontraba desarrollando la idea de su Exhibición sobre la Búsqueda de las Caras Ancestrales, que consistía en poner rostro a la identidad canaria a través de una comparativa entre la población contemporánea y la aborigen de Fuerteventura. «Ya había realizado fotografías de la contemporánea y ahora le faltaba crear las imágenes de los rostros ancestrales de los primeros aborígenes». Como buena canaria, el objetivo de María era dar visibilidad a las islas de la mejor manera que estuviera en su mano, «cuando terminé la tesis pensé en algo que no se hubiera hecho en las islas, así que escribí a varios sitios y en Liverpool me vincularon a este proyecto». Así fue como empezó todo. El proceso duró un año y medio, periodo que se divide en varias fases. «Para llegar a la reconstrucción de caras, primero estudiamos los cráneos (que se encuentran en el Museo Canario) y las características faciales, los escaneamos, realizamos una copia 3D y, mediante un software, le ponemos capas de tejidos según una media que sacamos de lo que hubieran sido los tejidos blandos: el agua, la grasa, los músculos… Para los canarios usé la media del norte de África». Hasta el día 31 de marzo la muestra estuvo expuesta en el Museo Canario, y ahora se encuentra a la espera de próximo destino. «Recomiendo a todo el que tenga ocasión que vaya a verla. Es una muestra muy interesante no sólo conceptualmente, que es una idea preciosa, sino también a nivel performance es muy emocionante al estar

las caras enfrentadas unas a otras, la aborigen frente a la contemporánea». Este proyecto dio pie al siguiente, consistente en la identificación y la reconstrucción facial de los inmigrantes africanos que perdieron la vida intentando llegar en cayuco a Fuerteventura y que están enterrados en la isla. La primera patera que llegó a Canarias de la que se tienen datos es de 1994 y hasta el año pasado siguieron llegando a Lanzarote, siendo 2005 y 2006 los años más terribles para la venida de cayucos desde África, cuando la desgracia asoló la costa majorera. «Hay inmigrantes enterrados en toda Canarias y dependiendo del cementerio están los nichos identificados de una manera u otra, en algunos pone INMIGRANTE, en otros están marcados como AFRICANO y la fecha de defunción.» Algunos podríamos sentirnos abrumados por la responsabilidad y el peso de tener un estudio tan precioso entre manos, sin embargo María no muestra más que calma, seguridad y paciencia. «Un estudio de estas características suele durar años. Y estamos ahora mismo en una primera fase de recopilación de datos para intentar ponerles nombre a las personas que perecieron en el mar y tratar de dar con sus familiares. Me voy a Senegal en octubre, para este propósito». Porque éste es un proyecto piloto en Canarias, con inicio local pero con perspectiva internacional. «En este proyecto están involucradas además la Universidad de La Laguna y la Universidad de Milán, en la que trabaja Cristina Catanero, que lleva la parte de identificación de inmigrantes de la Universidad y una de las mejores

a nivel mundial. El objetivo final de este proyecto sería hacer una base de datos útil, que se pueda llevar a cabo a nivel internacional y tratar de validar la reconstrucción facial como método para la identificación de las personas fallecidas sin papeles, ayudando así a sus familias a encontrarles. Queremos buscar la manera de que vivos y fallecidos puedan estar por fin en paz».

MARÍA CASTAÑEYRA RUIZ, A NATIVE OF FUERTEVENTURA, STUDIED HISTORY OF ART AND, ONCE SHE FINISHED, SHE GOT A JOB IN ARCHAEOLOGY, A FIELD IN WHICH SHE HAD BEEN SPECIALISING WITH A MASTER DEGREE AND HER THESIS ON PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, THE STUDY ON BONES.

Parte de los datos que deben aglutinar son los datos forenses que se tienen de algunas de estas personas. «Contamos, en algunos casos, con un estudio forense y fotografías de los cuerpos y en ocasiones con huellas dactilares, pero la exhumación de los cuerpos es clave. Tenemos claro que será lo más complicado de conseguir, pero tenemos fe en que por una causa como es la de aportar algo de paz a las familias, lo podamos lograr. Son nichos ocupados por personas que sabemos que son africanas y cuyas familias están esperando noticias».

At the age of 35, she works as a Research Assistant in the University of Liverpool. She arrived in England thanks to the scholarship of the Fundación Canarias Doctor Manuel Morales and to her tenacity: «You were supposed to have previous contacts with the University you chose, but I had none. I was sure I wanted to study Facial Reconstruction and in Liverpool was Caroline Wilkinson, one of the best in the world in this field».

Cuando le preguntamos por su parte preferida del proceso, no sabría elegir, asegura que disfruta con cada uno de los pasos. «Cuando ya estás con la reconstrucción de las caras vas poniendo rostro al trabajo de tanto tiempo, además es muy bonito ver cómo se va formando la imagen según las medias que has extraído, a veces sale tal y como te la imaginabas». ¿Qué es lo que más echas de menos de tu vida en Fuerteventura? Me adapto bien a los cambios y vivo feliz en Inglaterra, además está hiperconectado con España y hay vuelos muy a menudo. Echo de menos el sol y lo que peor llevo es escribir en inglés (risas), pero estoy feliz.

The moment was right as well because, when she wrote her application to the University, the artist and photographer Francesca Philips was developing the idea of her Exhibition about the Search for Ancestral Faces. Its purposes consisted in giving a face to the Canarian identity through a comparative study between the contemporary and aboriginal population in Fuerteventura. «She had already taken pictures of the contemporary population, and she then needed to create the images of the ancestral faces of the first aborigines». As is common among Canarian people, María’s aim was to give the islands the best visibility she could, «when I finished my thesis, I thought about something that hadn’t already been done in the islands, so I wrote to several places and in Liverpool they involved me in this project». This is how everything started. The process took one and a half year to complete, and the period was divided into different phases. «To obtain facial reconstructions, we first examine the skulls (they can be found in the Canarian Museum) and the facial characteristics, we scan them, we make a 3D copy and, through a software, we put layers of tissues according to an

Till 31st March, the exhibition was staged in the Canarian Museum, and it is now waiting for a new destination. «To whoever has the chance to, I recommend them to visit it. It is a very interesting exhibition, and not only on a conceptual level — since it is a beautiful idea —, but also on a performance level, because it is really emotional to see the two faces, the aboriginal and the contemporary, one opposite the other». This project was the starting point of the next one, which consists in the identification and facial reconstruction of the African immigrants who died trying to reach Fuerteventura on fishing boats and are now buried on the island. The first boat to be registered landed on the Canary Islands in 1994 and till last year migrants kept arriving in Lanzarote; the most terrible years for the arrival of these boats from Africa were 2005 and 2006, when the tragedy destroyed the coasts of Fuerteventura. «There are immigrants buried on all the Canaries and depending on the cemetery, the niches are identified somehow: some have «immigrant» written on them, others have «African» and the date of death». Some of us may feel overwhelmed by the responsibility and the burden of having such a precious study in our hands, but María — on the contrary — looks very calm, secure and patient. «It

usually takes years to complete a study with this characteristics. We are now in a first phase of gathering data to try to give a name to these people who died in the sea and find their families. I’m going to Senegal in October for this reason». This is a pilot project in the Canary Islands, with a local start but with an international perspective. «This project got the cooperation of the University of La Laguna and the University of Milan, where Cristina Catanero works; she is in charge of the immigrants’ identification of the University and she is one of the best in the world. The final objective of this project is to create a useful database to be used at the international level and to try to validate facial reconstruction as a method for the identification of dead illegal immigrants, helping their families find them. We want to find a way for both living and dead people to finally be at peace». A part of the data they have to combine comes from forensic data about these people that had previously been collected. «In some cases, we count on a forensic analysis and photos of the corpses, and sometimes on digital prints, but exhumation is fundamental. We clearly know that it’ll be the most difficult thing to get, but we hope to achieve that, given the importance of the cause of helping families be at peace. There are niches

occupied by people that we know are Africans and whose families are waiting for news». When we asked her about her favourite part in this process, she could not choose, she said she likes every stage of it. «When you work on facial reconstruction, you give features to the job you’ve been doing for so long; moreover, it is really nice to see how an image gets reconstructed according to the averages you calculated; sometimes it comes out exactly the way you imagined that». What do you miss the most about your life in Fuerteventura? I easily adapt to changes and I’m happy to live in England; plus, there are regular flights connecting with Spain. I miss the sun and what I really find hard is to write in English (laughing), but I am happy.

FUERTEVENTURA NORTE Familia Techno Fuerteventura Norte (FTFN) es un movimiento cultural que ha aflorado en Fuerteventura de la mano de un grupo de viejos y nuevos amigos a los que les gusta escuchar y bailar buena música, en buena compañía y en lugares privilegiados y, todo ello, acompañado de una interesante propuesta gastronómica. Los 12 organizadores del proyecto nos explican en qué consiste y su propósito, lo que para ellos es el verdadero impulsor de FTFN. Entonces, ¿Cuál es ese propósito? El propósito de FTFN es siempre ofrecer algo distinto, aportar y enriquecer sin molestar ni estropear nada. Con este principio fundamental hemos nacido y con él moriremos. Nos referimos por supuesto a la naturaleza, al territorio y sus moradores, a sus costumbres. FTFN intenta cubrir un hueco existente en la isla en lo que a música electrónica se refiere, pero no de cualquier manera. No hacemos raves ni fiestas, y buscamos no causar un efecto negativo en el medioambiente ni en las personas. FTFN se dedica a organizar Reuniones de gente agradable, educada y comprometida con la sociedad, el medio y las buenas maneras, unida por esta hermosa expresión musical que es el TECHNO. Tampoco pretendemos cambiar la percepción de la isla en el exterior. En estas reuniones disfrutamos de una propuesta musical vanguardista de calidad, en lugares privilegiados, a la vez que saboreamos durante todo el día una elaborada propuesta gastronómica. Es difícil describir un ambiente como el que se respira en nuestras citas, hay que disfrutarlo y vivirlo para entenderlo.

Entonces, ¿sois algo así como una promotora de eventos? Todo comenzó entre amigos y con el único objetivo de disfrutar de una de nuestras formas de ocio preferidas. Todos, ya de una cierta edad (risas), desde hace muchos años, nos juntábamos de vez en cuando y nos «hacíamos una escapada», como si fuera un viaje o una acampada, alquilábamos una casa o un espacio, llevábamos equipo de sonido, comida y bebida y disfrutábamos de un día entre amigos con la mejor música. La gente empezó a interesarse por estas reuniones, tanto para asistir como para pinchar en ellas, tenemos seguidores nacionales e internacionales y nos han ido contactando artistas que para nosotros eran referentes. Había ganas de escuchar y poner buena música y de hacerlo en las condiciones que comentamos. Así hace un año decidimos sentarnos a valorar lo que estaba sucediendo. Una cosa fue llevando a otra y aquí estamos, ahora, sin duda, FTFN es el embrión de una promotora de eventos, un sello discográfico y una agencia de Dj´s. Esta es nuestra situación actual. ¿Cómo os comunicais con vuestro público para informarle acerca de vuestras reuniones? Contamos con dos grupos de whatsapp para informar de las reuniones, y a través nuestra página de facebook intentamos acercar la verdadera cultura del TECHNO

a la gente, la de la música, sus raíces y subgéneros, intentando también romper el estigma que el techno acarrea. Tenemos también un perfil de soundcloud para comunicarnos musicalmente, creando playlist de las propuestas que traemos a cada REUNIÓN. Habladme un poco de vuestra propuesta musical, me intriga porque hacéis mucho hincapié en ello. Llevo pinchando 21 años, amando este género desde unos 5 años antes, con el tiempo mi oído se ha ido afinando cada vez más, a la par que he ido entendiendo muchas cosas y finalmente he descubierto que es un asunto de comunicación; para mí la música es música y si la sabes consumir y tienes las aptitudes para poder hacerlo en profundidad te das cuenta de que hay mala y buena música, en cualquier género. Por todo esto, nuestra propuesta es ante todo musical, a mi personalmente no me gusta Boris Bretchja, por poner otro ejemplo, tampoco me agrada Luciano, es más, me molesta; por el contrario si hablamos de Juan Atkins, Convextion, Conforce, SequentialCircuitsDj, Damon Wild, AphexTwin, Moodyman o Carl Craig. ya muchos se habrán perdido, es lo que hay, pero aquí no, aquí nos gusta lo bueno, no hay más. ¿Pero pincháis vosotros mismos o traéis artistas de este nivel?

Familia Techno Fuerteventura Norte (FTFN) is a cultural movement that was created in Fuerteventura by the hands of a group of old and new friends who love listening to good music, in good company, in privileged places to enjoy it and dance to it, it all combined with an interesting gastronomic offer. The 12 organizers talked with us about the project and its intention, because they insist that FTFN has an intention, which is its real driving force.

En Junio viene a deleitarnos, nada más y nada menos que, Eduardo De La Calle, capo de Analog Solutions y único español que publica en PLANET E, con casi 212” en el mercado, no hay muchos artistas que puedan decir algo así. Con más de 20 años de carrera a sus espaldas y más de 50 países recorridos, aterrizará en Fuerteventura para hacer un un DJSET de más de 4 horas en una de nuestras Reuniones. So, what is this intention? The intention of FTFN is to contribute, give, enrich, and never to bother, trouble nor ruin: with this fundamental principle we were born and with it we’ll die. This principle applies to the nature, the territory, its inhabitants and its customs and, of course, to the human being itself. FTFN fills a huge gap Fuerteventura has in relation to electronic music, but not in a usual way. We don’t organise RAVES nor PARTIES, nor anything that can have a negative effect on people or on the environment, and neither we want to change the perception of the island abroad. FTFN organises MEETINGS of nice and polite people who respect the others, the environment and the good manners. We enjoy techno music with its roots and variations, without distorting its real meaning. In these MEETINGS, we enjoy some good quality and avant-garde music, in privileged places while tasting great food in good company. It’s difficult to describe the atmosphere in our MEETINGS, you have to enjoy it and live it. So, you are like an event promotion company, aren’t you? It all started with friends and with the only aim of enjoying one of our favourite hobbies. As in any other activity you do with your friends, like travelling or go camping, we used to meet every now and then, rent a place, sound equipment, buy some food and drinks and then split costs. People started to get interested

in our meetings, both to enjoy and deejay in them. We have both national and international followers, and some artists we consider as reference points have contacted us. There was a strong wish to listen to and play some good music, and to do it in the conditions we said. So, one year ago, we decided to meet and talk about what was going on. One thing led to another and now here we are. FTFN is certainly the germ of an event promotion company, a label and a dj agency. This our present situation. How do you inform your public about our meetings? We have two Whatsapp groups, and through our Facebook page we try to bring TECHNO music, its culture and origins, to the people, and to repair its poor reputation. We also have a profile on SoundCloud to express ourselves musically through playlists we will play during our MEETINGS. Líneas Romero presentó el viernes, 26 de abril, en el muelle de Playa Blanca su nuevo barco, el Don Juan. Este catamarán operará desde el 1 de mayo cubriendo la ruta que une Fuerteventura y Lanzarote en tan solo media hora. Al evento de presentación acudieron varias autoridades y empresarios locales. Desde Líneas Romero dieron a conocer a los asistentes los detalles sobre este catamarán de fibra de vidrio, con el que la naviera sigue apostando por la innovación. Así, el Don Juan, bautizado en honor al fundador de la compañía, Juan Romero Morales; cuenta con capacidad para 340 pasajeros y unas modernas prestaciones. Este catamarán supone una mejora en la oferta de Líneas Romero en el estrecho de la Bocayna. Esto se debe a que los otros dos ferries que cubren esta ruta, Princesa Ico y El Graciosero, tardan 45 minutos y tienen .14

capacidad para 250 personas cada uno. Por ello, el Don Juan llega para reforzar este servicio, ofreciendo una mayor comodidad a sus pasajeros. El nuevo barco, de 30 metros de eslora y 9 metros de manga y construido en el astillero asturiano Gondán, se utilizará para el transporte de personas y mercancías, pero no de vehículos. El Don Juan contará con cinco salidas diarias de lunes a sábado desde Corralejo (10:30, 11:50, 13:30, 17:30 y 19:30) y otras cuatro los domingos (11:30, 13:30, 17:30 y 19:30). Por su parte, El Graciosero cubrirá la misma línea con salidas de lunes a sábado a las 9:00 y 11:30; y el Princesa Ico los domingos a las 10:30 horas. De esta manera, Líneas Romero pasará a ofrecer 7 conexiones de lunes a sábado y 5 los domingos entre Fuerteventura y Lanzarote y viceversa.

Líneas Romero cuenta con una amplia trayectoria uniendo islas. Todo empezó en 1930 cuando Jorge M. Toledo Betancort estableció la empresa marítima de correo postal entre Lanzarote y la Graciosa, Naviera Toledo. No fue hasta 1975 cuando la compañía recayó en manos de Juan Romero Morales, que trabajaba en ella y era el marido de doña Juana Toledo González (hija de Jorge M.). En 1982 la empresa empezó a denominarse con su nombre. En 1985 heredaron el negocio sus cuatro hijos: Luis, Juan Jorge, Federico y Rosa Romero, quienes actualmente están a cargo del mismo. Finalmente, en 1991 la empresa adquirió el nombre de Líneas Marítimas Romero. Aunque la compañía no ha parado de crecer, sus valores familiares y su amor por su Isla siguen intactos. Líneas Romero es hoy una reconocida empresa con capital cien por cien local, que ha apostado por la innovación para ir adaptándose a las circunstancias. Así, el crecimiento del turismo y la población ha llevado a que la compañía haya ido aumentado su flota y diversificando su oferta. Líneas Romero introduced its new boat Don Juan on Friday 26th April in Playa Blanca harbour. This catamaran is sailing from May, 1st, operating the route between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote in just half an hour. Various local authorities and businesspeople attended the presentation ceremony. Líneas Romero unveiled the details about this new catamaran in fibreglass, which represents the company’s constant gamble on innovation. Don Juan, named in honour of the founder of the company — Juan Romero Morales —, has a capacity of 340 passengers and modern performances. This catamaran constitutes an improvement in the offer Líneas Romero has in the strait of Bocayna. In fact, the other two ferries operating this lane, Princesa Ico and El Graciosero, have a travel time of 45 minutes and a capacity of 250 people each.

That’s why Don Juan represents an improvement in the service, offering more comfort to its passengers. The new boat, 30 metres of length overall and 9 metres of beam, was built in the Asturian shipyard of Gondán and will be used to transport people and goods, but no vehicles. Don Juan is going to offer five daily departures from Monday to Saturday from Corralejo (morning: 10:30 and 11:50; afternoon: 1:30, 5:30 and 7:30) and four others on Sunday (morning: 11:30; afternoon: 1:30, 5:30 and 7:30). For their part, El Graciosero will travel the same route with departures from Monday to Saturday at 9:00 am and 11:30 am, while Princesa Ico on Sunday at 10:30 am. LA ERMITA El centro de Pájara está presidido por su particular ermita, hogar de nuestra Señora de la Regla y uno de los edificios más históricos y emblemáticos de Fuerteventura. Si bien no es especialmente llamativa ni grande ni gloriosa, cuenta con algunas características que la hacen muy peculiar. Su construcción se inicia hacia a finales del siglo XVII con el levantamiento de la primera de sus dos naves, pero es en 1711 cuando se consagra como ayuda de parroquia y se segrega de Betancuria, lo que trae consigo la ampliación del templo unos pocos años después. Desde entonces y hasta ahora, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Regla cuenta con una peculiaridad de la que pueden presumir pocas iglesias en el mundo: dos puertas. Otra de sus extrañezas se encuentra en la decoración de la fachada, un minucioso trabajo artesanal realizado .18

La creencia más extendida atribuye la influencia de los elementos decorativos al arte azteca mejicano, si bien hay una corriente de estudiosos que le concede una vinculación con un texto de Cesare Ripa de 1593 y que vendría a resaltar la propia fe cristiana a través de la representación de elementos de la naturaleza. Sea como fuere, azteca o no, la belleza y el cuidado en el detalle de la decoración de la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Regla no escapa a los ojos de quien la contempla.

Pájara es la capital del mayor municipio de Fuerteventura, que comprende centro y sur del territorio insular. El municipio cuenta con varios núcleos poblacionales importantes: Morro Jable, Costa Calma… pero es el entorno natural, sin duda, su mayor valor. También a unos pocos kilómetros pero en dirección norte se encuentra el Barranco de Las Peñitas, un paisaje que parece sacado de otro planeta y es para muchos una de las zonas más bonitas de la isla. Además de ofrecer unas vistas sobrecogedoras, tiene gran importancia histórica para la población de Fuerteventura, pues en medio del barranco se encuentra la diminuta ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Peña, patrona de la isla y responsable de la mayor fiesta popular que se celebra cada año en Fuerteventura. El punto más alto de la geografía majorera, el Pico de La Zarza, que se eleva 807 metros sobre el mar desde las faldas de Cofete, también tiene su sede en el municipio sureño. Pájara encierra infinidad de encantos, sobre todo naturales, pero es fundamental saber que la isla de arena tiene su pasado, su historia y su cultura, que la hacen si cabe todavía más especial. .20

The centre of Pájara is dominated by its peculiar «ermita», a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Regla (Nuestra Señora de la Regla) and one of the most historic and emblematic buildings of Fuerteventura. Even though it is not that impressive, nor big or glorious, it has some very peculiar characteristics. The construction began towards the end of the 17th century, when the first of the two naves was built. In 1711, the Ermita was consecrated as a filial church and it segregated from Betancuria, and as a consequence of this, a few years later the chapel was extended. Since then and till now, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Regla boasts a peculiarity that just a few churches in the world have: two doors. Another oddity is in the decoration of the façade. There, visitors can see an elaborate artisanal work, manufactured with single pieces of copper-coloured stonework, that represents natural elements such as birds, snakes, suns and moons, and some detailed geometrical figures. According to a widely held belief, the decorative elements are of Mexican Aztec influence, even if there are some experts who find some connections with a 1593 text by Cesare Ripa and therefore think it’s the Christian faith instead that was represented through these natural elements. Be that as it may, Aztec or not, the beauty and the attention to details in the decoration of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Regla doesn’t go unnoticed.

THE SURROUNDING AREA Pájara is the capital city of the biggest municipality in Fuerteventura that covers the centre and the south of the island. The municipality has various important cities, such as Morro Jable and Costa Calma, but the natural environment is undoubtedly its main value. The isthmus of La Pared is the narrowest part of Fuerteventura, with just 4 km of sand separating the coasts of Barlovento and Sotavento. It is also the access point to the Natural Park of Jandía, one of the most treasured and spectacular natural areas that the island offers, with its wonderful beaches and spectacular landscapes, but which is also rich in flora with endemic species, varied forms of fauna and archaeological and geological elements of great value. The beach of Cofete, one of the wildest and ruggedest of the archipelago and possibly of most part of the world, is a mustsee for any visitor to Fuerteventura. A few kilometres off the city of Pájara towards the west, there is another small fishing village which is worth a visit: Ajuy, with its wild ocean and its thousand-year-old caves of incalculable geological value that catch the visitors’ eyes. A few kilometres off the city as well, but towards the north, you find the Barranco de Las Peñitas, a ravine offering a landscape that looks like from another planet and that many people define as the most beautiful area of the island. Besides the stunning views, it has a great historic importance for the people of Fuerteventura, since in the middle of the ravine there is the tiny chapel of Nuestra Señora de La Peña, the patron saint of the island honoured every year with the biggest popular festival in Fuerteventura. In the southern municipality of Pájara, visitors can also find the highest point of the island geography, Pico de La Zarza, which is located at 807 metres above sea level in Cofete. Pájara boasts countless natural beauties, but it is important to know that the sandy island has its own past, its history and its culture that make it even more special, if possible.

Epicteto fue un filósofo griego que caminaba por las calles de la antigua Roma predicando todo lo que había aprendido en la escuela estoica. Los estoicos son la corriente filosófica que creen que la base de la felicidad es el minimalismo, o sea, que no es más feliz el que mas tiene, sino el que menos necesita. En realidad, más que un filósofo, Epicteto fue un moralista, ya que era más partidario de poner en práctica los conceptos aprendidos, que en seguir teorizando ideas como hacían sus colegas de la época. Cuando Epicteto conocía a alguien que había vivido una situación traumática, le dibujaba dos círculos en el suelo, uno grande y en su interior, otro más pequeño. Luego les pedía que en el círculo grande pusieran SI CONTROLO todo aquello que creían que NO podían controlar y en el pequeNO CONTROLO ño lo que SÍ podían controlar. ¿QUÉ PONDRÍAS TÚ EN EL CÍRCULO BLANCO? ¿QUÉ CREES QUE REALMENTE PUEDES CONTROLAR? Esta pregunta ha sido motivo de debate durante cientos de años. Muchísimas personas creen que se pueden controlar a ellos mismos, sus pensamientos, sus emociones y sus acciones, pero mis estudios me llevan a una conclusión algo distinta, personalmente no creo que podamos controlar nuestras emociones ni acciones. O sea, SÓLO CONTROLAMOS EL SIGNIFICADO QUE LE DAMOS A LO QUE PENSAMOS, y ¿en qué me baso? muy sencillo, si yo pienso que algo es malo, cuando suceda me voy a sentir mal, y por lo tanto ac.22

tuaré acorde a ese malestar; pero si yo pienso que algo es bueno, mi sentimiento va a ser placentero ante esa situación y en consecuencia actuaré positivamente. ¿Me explico? Si verdaderamente controlásemos lo que sentimos y hacemos, no habrían fumadores, ni personas melancólicas, ni obesidad… «No es lo que te pasa sino como reaccionas a ello lo que verdaderamente importa» Epicteto Nuestras reacciones SIEMPRE dependen del significado que le damos a ese pensamiento o idea de lo que nos está pasando. Ahora que ya tienes claro la importancia del significado que le das a tus pensamientos ¿por qué no le damos la vuelta al significado que le estamos dando a esos pensamientos que nos paralizan, atemorizan y en definitiva no nos dejan vivir plenamente?

PENSAMIENTO Ej.: No tengo trabajo SIGNIFICADO ACTUAL He fracasado, no hay trabajos, estamos en crisis. SIGNIFICADO POSITIVO Ahora puedo empezar de cero y buscar trabajo en algo que realmente me apasione.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU CAN CONTROL? Epictetus was a Greek philosopher who used to wander around the streets in Ancient Rome preaching all he learnt in the Stoic school. The Stoics were philosophers who believed that happiness is based on minimalism, that is to say, you are not happier if you own more, but if you need less. Actually, Epictetus was more of a moralist than a philosopher, since he was keener on putting the concepts he learnt into practise, rather than keeping theorizing as the colleagues of his time did. When Epictetus met someone who had suffered a traumatic situation, he drew two circles on the ground, one big and another smaller inside of it. Then he asked them to put everything they thought they could NOT control inside of the big circle and everything they DID think they could control in the small one. WHAT WOULD YOU PUT IN THE BLANK CIRCLE? WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU CAN REALLY CONTROL? This question was largely discussed throughout the centuries. Many people think they can control themselves, their thoughts, emotions and actions, but my studies led me to a somewhat different conclusion. I personally do not think we can control our emotions or actions, we can JUST CONTROL THE MEANING WE GIVE TO OUR THOUGHTS. On what grounds am I saying this? It’s easy: if I think something is bad, when it happens I will feel bad, and I will therefore act according to this discontent. Still, if I think something is good, my feelings in this situation will be pleasant and I will therefore act positively. You know what I mean? If we really controlled what we feel and do, there would be no smokers, nor melancholic people, nor obesity… «It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that really matters» Epictetus Our reactions ALWAYS depend on the meaning we attribute to that thought or idea about what’s happening to us. Now that you are aware of the importance of the meaning you give to your thoughts, why don’t we change the meaning we are attributing to those thoughts that paralyse us, intimidate us and in short, do not let us live fully? THOUGHT: Ex.: I do not have a job PRESENT MEANING I failed, there are no jobs, we are facing a crisis POSITIVE THOUGHT Now I can start from zero and seek a job I am really keen on.
