5 Significant Changes to the Handicap Index Calculation
KYLE PIEDIMONTE, ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL
Over the next few months, the USGA GHIN System is undergoing a major overhaul. The World Handicap System will go into effect January 1, 2020, and will be the golf handicapping system that will replace GHIN. We will send out updates as new information is revealed.
1. Minimum of 3 scores needed to establish index (54 holes) 2. Average the lowest 8 of the most recent 20 Score Differentials and round to the nearest tenth 3. Playing Conditions Calculation a. This calculation will take weather and other playing conditions into account on the day the golfer plays his/ her round. It will adjust the course rating, minimally by factoring in how other golfers played that same day. b. PCC will be conservative in nature, so we expect the vast majority of the time the PCC adjustment will be ‘0’. à More education coming in October 2 Newsletter. 4. Exceptional Score Reduction a. A score differential which is at least 7.0 strokes better than the player’s Handicap Index at the time the round was played à More education coming in October 9 Newsletter. 5. Addition of Soft/Hard Cap to limit upward movement a. A reduction or limit on the increase of a player’s Handicap Index over a rolling 12-month period, measured against the player’s Low Handicap Index within that period à More education coming in October 16 Newsletter.
