July

From the General Manager, Mark Reid

Happy July, and a heartfelt salute to the red, white, and blue spirit of Independence Day! As we bask in the summer sun and celebrate the Fourth of July, I want to extend my warmest wishes to you and your families for a festive, fun-filled month.

Our community will truly shine during this year’s Fourth of July festivities! Please see the “From the Boardroom” acknowledgement of the Activities Committee on page 6. The Committee’s hard work creates memories we’ll cherish all year long. Once again, our 4th of July fireworks display will be second to none. We appreciate all our festive members who decorate their boats and join in the parade, deck out their homes with patriotic flair, or just bring their energy onto the lake and lake shoreline for a fireworks watch party. Your enthusiasm makes our neighborhood a warm, welcoming place to be! And a special shout-out to our Community Services & Maintenance Staff for their extra duty to facilitate these special events.

From the Boardroom

Summer is here and it is the season to enjoy all of the amenities that make Lakewood “The Place to Live”. The Activities Committee has once again organized a wonderful July 4th Celebration weekend full of activities including a 5K run, walk and roll, pancake breakfast, pool party at the Cove Aquatic Center and the boat parade. The committee has also added a movie night at 23 Acres on Saturday, July 5. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blanket and enjoy watching Top Gun–Maverick on the big screen. A taco truck will be on-site 7:00-9:00 p.m. and the movie starts at sunset.

In two short weeks, our swim teams will be completing their season with Championships on July 12 at the Longview Recreation Center. Good luck to the Cruisers and Lasers and congratulations on another successful season!

Thank you to all of the members of the Activities Committee, Swim Team Board and all of the volunteers who have worked tirelessly this summer to help families make memories that last a lifetime.

As we get in to the heart of boating season, it is always good to get a refresher on boating safety by visiting the “Boating Season in Lakewood” page on our website. The page includes a Lake Education Course, safety tips as well as a video on boating safety. You can access the website at https://lpoa.com/boating/#safety

The Envision Lakewood Strategic Plan is now available on the website for review, you may find it at https:// lpoa.com/transparency/envision-lakewood/#plan

The Activities Committee has once again organized a wonderful July 4th Celebration weekend full of activities including a 5K run, walk and roll, pancake breakfast, pool party at the Cove Aquatic Center and the boat parade.

Now that the plan is approved, the Board, Staff and Standing Committee members will meet to determine the best way to implement the plan and start moving toward the goals of this living, community driven document.

Lake Vegetation Treatment Update

As was approved in the November 2024 Board Meeting and contracted in the January 2025 Board meeting, SOLitude Lake Management has begun their work on bathymetric sediment mapping, vegetation and depth surveys, water quality testing, sediment and nutrient load testing, copper sediment testing and aquatic vegetation treatment in Lakewood.

As of the time of this publication, SOLitude has provided lake vegetation treatment on these two dates:

May 12, 2025

June 10, 2025

So far this season we have experienced light to moderate lake vegetation levels. Both Coon Tail & Curly-Leaf Pondweed have been observed. Good communication between SOLitude Lake Management and LPOA staff will continue and if the level of vegetation increases, additional treatments may be added as needed. After the initial treatment, we experience good visual results showing a noticeable decline.

Remember that throughout the summer season, you may still see remnant aquatic growth—the treatments take time to work and multiple treatments are usually conducted. Surface algae is also not a target of treatment, as algae growth is a result of fertilizer runoff from surrounding residential lake property.

ARB/ARC Information

ARB/ARC deadlines are the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. The meetings are the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 6:00 pm. All meetings will take place at the Community Service Office, 735 NE Lakewood Blvd.

The Lakewood Bass Fishing Club season has started! To follow along the fishing tournament dates, go to their page at lpoa.com/social-clubs/bass-fishing-club/ or check out their club page on Facebook, “Lakewood Lakes Bass Fishing Club”.

LAKEWOOD ARTISTS SERIES JULY ART EXHIBIT

A place to present artists of all mediums

The Argyle Art Gallery summer exhibit invites you to experience three different artistic mediums, each offering its own unique method of expression. Whether through the broad strokes of painting, the intricate textures of fused glass, or the depth of photography, this exhibit offers the limitless possibilities of creativity.

Susie Freeland was drawn to decorative glass long before she began creating hundreds of her own unique works in fused glass. Twenty years ago, Susie began to experiment in stained glass. Working with glass became a passion and soon she was learning new techniques to create fused glass. In her Lakewood studio, Susie has created a space for works in progress, a room for kilns, and a room with a large display of her rainbow colored glass art. Entering her studio is like falling into a kaleidoscope. The process of making fused glass is very technical and can take days to become the object she envisions. Susie starts with a base piece of square or round glass, and then adds layers of more glass pieces in various shapes and colors. As she moves the pieces around, working in new colors, adding crushed or powdered glass features, the new project reveals its own shape and purpose. Susie usually has 8-10 pieces in the process of being created, molded, fused in the kilns, or annealing (resting). She continues to learn new techniques taking classes in Arizona during the winter months and collecting books of “recipes” for new projects. She belongs to an artist group in AZ, as well as Summit Art, and a small group called “Glassy Gals,” who discuss their latest projects and inspire each other. Susie currently has work on display and for sale at the Buttonwood Art Space in Kansas City, two galleries in Phoenix, and Powell Gardens.

Rick Scaletty

Rick Scaletty and his wife, Kathy, are both accomplished artists of different mediums. They travel much of the year, always finding beautiful places to feed their creativity. This past year, it was Colorado in the summer, Italy in the fall, and Tucson for the winter. Rick still dives when he can for extraordinary underwater photos, and continues to craft beautiful jewelry in his spare time. In this exhibit, Rick will be showing some of his favorite underwater photos over the years. More of his colorful work can be seen on his website, rickscaletty. zenfolio.com.

Kathy Scaletty

Kathy Scaletty has recently been experimenting with watercolors and learning to paint with pastels. During the winter months in Arizona, she expanded her skills in the new techniques with classes from some amazing artists: Mary-Ann Murphy from Canada; Susi Havens-Bezaire from Ohio; and Susan Morrison, from the Sedona Desert Museum. Kathy enjoys painting flowers and landscapes using photo references from their trips and also painting in plein aire. The couple’s travels offer many opportunities for each to use their talents in creative ways. When Kathy and Rick are at home in Lakewood, they spend as much time as possible with their grandsons.
