Only a few weeks ago, Tess Woods and I set out on an adventure to trek the fields of Brimfield looking for the perfect tabletop center piece. Again, this year, we are taking part in the To Live and Dine Event, which will be held on October 19th at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Boston. While the event is an incredible display of community spirit and goodwill, so is the importance of a showstopping tablescape… or rather a gilded statue to anchor the design.
Field after field, booth after booth, there was nothing…sure we stopped and laughed about the Chinese Ming dragon and the hundredth plastic Santa Claus, but there was no antique angel that would have adorned a church or a cool weather vane that could tell stories of storms gone by. It was just a sea of cleaned out garages and attics…it is as if Brimfield lost all the luster of a one-of-a-kind find that I had come to know.
While enjoying our shrimp cocktail, Tess and I talked about how lucky we are to work in a world of Brimfield - of sorts. When we are looking for something unique, made from the finest of craftsmen and woman, meant to transcend time, I can just walk into our showroom. No one makes gilded statues per say, but each piece our manufacturers create really is an anchor piece of any space.
As you enter the showroom this season you will see a few new updates. We are proud to welcome the JF Fabrics’ family of brands back to the Design Center. Check out the expanded offerings of Mulligan’s and A. Rudin, along with the new wallcovering display of Maya Romanoff, Hazelton House and the new Casadeco. In December, we will welcome part of the Rock House Group: Hancock and Moore, Jessica Charles, and Maitland-Smith. Full displays of these collections will follow in the new year.
These last seven years have gone by so quickly. During that time, I have had the privilege to get to know our partners, see our factories and meet the hands that are creating these one of a kind pieces, and been able to visit with our clients, all while working alongside a team to create a new vision for M-Geough. While we never know what the future holds for us, I do know that the future it is bright. Stay tuned for more…2025 is going to be one for the books!!
On behalf of our entire team, have a great year end and a joyful holiday season.

YOUR HOME, YOUR STORY
Have you ever been captivated by the intricate carvings, rich finishes, and enduring beauty of classical furniture?
My journey began in design school with a fascination for ancient Greek artifacts and a deep appreciation for the simplicity of Roman furniture, with its clean lines and functional forms. Admiring the depictions of grand palaces adorned with ornate furnishings, each piece offers a glimpse into a different time and place.
As the holiday season approaches, I invite you to join me on a journey through time and style. We'll delve into the rich history of classical furnishings, discovering a vast tapestry of styles and techniques. From the elegant curves of Louis XIV furniture to the rugged beauty of a stone table, each piece has a unique story to tell. We'll examine the ancient art of stone furniture making, the innovative techniques of early glassmakers, and the delicate art of gilding, which has been used to adorn everything from frames to furniture. Uncover the techniques that have transformed raw materials into exquisite works of art.
We take a look back at the iconic fashion and music of the Olympic Games. Explore how athletes have used their outfits to express their individuality and how music has played a vital role in inspiring and motivating them.
Our partners' commitment to creating stunning, high-quality, and functional pieces is truly inspiring. Classical furniture is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a testament to the enduring power of design and craftsmanship. As we have seen, its influence can be felt in countless pieces that continue to grace our homes and public
spaces. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply appreciate the beauty of well-made objects, classical furniture offers a timeless elegance that will never go out of style.
Stepping into our showroom is like walking into a page from your favorite design magazine. Our curated collection of furniture isn't just about pieces; it's about creating spaces that tell your unique story. Come in and let's create something truly special together.
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this journey through classical wonderland. Flip through the pages, discover inspiring designs, and find new ideas to bring to your own home.

CONTINUING A TRADITION OF TIMELESS AND TIMELY DESIGN
INSPIRED BY THE PAST
Designers and creators have always had the urge to look back, pluck gems from the past, and revive them in today's décor. For over 55 years, they've recognized Minton-Spidell as a master at taking the past and making it their present.
Known for its 18th- and 19th-century furniture reproductions and transitional, clean-lines with pieces and finishes fully customizable to designer specs, MintonSpidell has been a mainstay for transforming history in showrooms across the country, including M-Geough.
Much of the inspiration for Minton-Spidell comes from our earliest understanding of furniture, where stone inscriptions and paintings, provide glimpses into the forms and proportions of early pieces. These early pieces often reflect a hedonistic attitude towards life, serving as a tool for expressing the spirit of its time and the ingenuity of its community. Whether used individually or collectively, these pieces can be seen as a reflection of human ideals and aspirations, or simply as beautiful objects for everyday use.
Lugano Chair with Klismos Roots
Our Lugano Chair draws inspiration from the classic Greek Klismos chair, known for its swooping delicate lines and saber legs that curve out. The backrest continues the curve upward in the opposite direction. Our Lugano chair has a similar modernized silhouette with elegantly carved rosettes and leaf motifs, making it a timeless addition to any interior.
While we have come a long way in the furniture business the human hands continue to translate quality and care through the centuries… centuries that inspire the craftsmanship of Minton-Spidell.
A MINI-HISTORY
Furniture was primarily sought after by collectors who attended auctions. As demand grew, however, collectors began to search for pieces in old farmhouses and country residences. When these sources dried up, the only option was to recreate antique furniture in the original style, giving rise to a new commercial sector. Catalogs and magazines featuring examples of antique furniture were published in France and England in the mid-19th century, contributing
to the understanding of antique styles and the reasons for their popularity.
This search for beauty and quality in furniture led to a growing interest in antique pieces. This interest was particularly strong among English aristocrats in the second half of the 19th century, who were influenced by the Romantic movement's emphasis on the past.
The 19th century was a time of significant political, social, cultural, and technical change. The French Revolution projected its ideals of liberty and equality throughout Europe, influencing the design and production of furniture. In France, the revolutionary period saw a shift towards simpler, more functional styles focused on purpose and need, rather than decoration and opulence.
Portuguese Console Table
It’s the star of the collection by Minton-Spidell. Those intricate details are everything! 17th-century Baroque influences abound in our Portuguese Console table. Meticulously crafted with intricate details, this piece exemplifies the opulence and grandeur of historical design.
Under prior social and economic conditions, French furniture reached its zenith, characterized by exquisite craftsmanship, luxurious materials, and ornate designs. The most famous style of 18thcentury French furniture is Louis XV, known for its curved lines, asymmetrical designs, and use of exotic woods. The Louis XVI style, which followed, was more restrained and symmetrical, reflecting the neoclassical influence of the time.
French furniture continued to evolve, influenced by various artistic movements. The Empire style, inspired by Napoleon's conquests, was characterized by grand scale, heavy ornamentation, and motifs associated with military power. The Art Nouveau style, which emerged in the late 19th century, was characterized by flowing lines, organic forms, and decorative motifs inspired by nature.
Refined craftsmanship meets timeless design. This Italian Louis XVI dining armchair, finished in our Black Kutani and upholstered in luxurious boucle, exemplifies elegance. Historically, Italian Louis XVI furniture design is renowned for its delicate carvings, straight lines, and neoclassical influences, reflecting the opulence of 18th-century aristocratic taste. Hand-carved in Los Angeles.
Eighteenth-century REPRODUCTIONS have not gone away. They are STILL CURRENT, whether it is one piece or ten.
REBORN
Like design itself, Minton-Spidell will move forward by building on what has come before.
“Eighteenth-century reproductions have not gone away. They are still current, whether it is one piece or ten,” says design team lead and owner,
Beautifully shown in a Desert #4 finish. This exquisite piece combines classic French furniture elegance with modern dimensions, featuring ultra-luxe cushions and heirloom-quality craftsmanship.

Matt Costigan. Minton-Spidell will continue to re-imagine these classic and timeless pieces that work with any design aesthetic.
Reborn is a phrase Costigan uses to describe his design approach; tweak something that's already proven to be popular. Take old ideas in new directions. "So, for example, what if we take the frame of a best-selling chair and reconfigure it into a bed frame?" Costigan said. "It's about giving an innovative boost with a fresh set of eyes."
The finishes are key to Minton-Spidell's reputation. Their artistic applications and

techniques for antique reproductions are hallmarks that help set the company above other manufacturers. Designers can pick and choose from 90 hand-applied finishes ranging from hand-rubbed, French polish-style wood
stains to artfully aged paints and 23k burnished gold. They recently added fresh handbrushed paint and sleek stains on solid walnut to their repertoire. Here too, Las Palmas proves to be a great fit, bringing its own line of finishes to its Minton-Spidell pieces.
"We want to make the Minton-Spidell collection more robust: more dining tables, beds, and lighting. We want Minton-Spidell to be a go-to collection. We will still be the place for period reproductions, but we'll also have other unique offerings." Matt Costigan
This top-down approach to design is working well already. It's a system that gives the words "custom" and "contract" whole new meanings. Costigan explains, that he works closely with furniture designers and manufacturers, collaborating within Minton-Spidell’s vision and allowing them all to recreate history.
Minton-Spidell's tradition of providing designers with exquisitely designed furniture will continue for decades to come, with new and expanding lines moving forward.

TWIGS WALLPAPER & FABRICS
ARTHUR ATHAS
What is the short story of Twigs history?
Founded in 1973, Twigs Fabrics and Wallpaper specializes in handmade textiles and wallpapers inspired by 18th and 19th century decor. As founder, owner and creative mastermind, I embarked on this path in Boston where I was still attending art school. Twigs’ first major project was in 1977, commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to reproduce “The Monuments of Paris” wallpaper (originally made in early 1800s). The museum requested a panoramic wallpaper to use in their exhibition room, taking a team of artists two years to produce the drawings and over a thousand silkscreens to finish the printing. Some of the classic designs such as Pheasant, which simulates hand marbled book end papers, have been in the collection since we started. After many years of working on numerous large scale projects (even at the

White House!), my partner Rick and I decided to scale down to a two-person team our production studio in Culver City.
Tell us about your “factory” workspace here in Boston:
Of course, life happens when you are making other plans.... The Boston, East Coast winters were beginning to wear thin. The cost of heat fuel was enormous, and most of our biggest customers were in California. Within 6 months the entire company move to San Francisco. We were very happy there with the mild climate. I started looking around for another more permanent
home for the production and designing. Real estate was cheap in those days, but heating a huge 50,000 square foot building was not. Needing a break from the cold, I rented a lovely apartment on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. Yes, I did lose my heart to SF and took the entire operation west to a huge building near Candlestick Park. Our production facility was a huge 48k square feet at the South end of town, sometimes working 24 hours a day for wallpapers and fabrics being printed in Westerly, RI and Wattvil, Switzerland. The company and team thrived on the new era and sales were falling from the sky. In 6 years, Twigs had become an international company with a dazzling future ahead of us.
The success was short lived. The key members of the

team wanted more out of life. They married, wanted to start families and most shocking our dear partner John Andreozzi died. Regrettably, nothing could replace the love and fraternity we all had for him. The mood changed in the wallpaper sector of the decorative industry. Meeting every challenge, we downsized and continued to downsize for the next 10 years, eventually landing in Venice, California.
What is the creative drive of the company?
Along with designing and producing papers and fabrics, I was commissioned to do the interior design for a 120 million dollar residential project. Rick and I did a wonderful job, and the entire project was awarded Les Arts et Lettres by then President Chirac of France. After all, the client spent 50 million dollars in France on interiors at our direction. 911 came the day of our installation. We were all dazed, trucks and movers going in different directions. At least it kept our mind's focus on something positive.

Twigs 'Ferns' Wallpaper in gold and gray.
In all the years in business, what was your favorite installation of the line or custom project?
I was asked by the same architectural firm to be Director of Design for a 40 story hotel residential office tour in partnership with the St. Regis Hotel. I spent my weekends working on new designs and to editing collections for a German weaver and a Swiss textile printer. With collections sold at Twigs, Rose Cummings, IDS, weavers and printers in Europe, Twigs generated hundreds of designs and thousands of color combinations. I knew that France or Italy was the next stop.
You’ve mentioned to me, but what are some of the places you travel to gather ideas, inspiration, etc.?
Whilst I was in a villa on the Brenta River, I came up with a revival of Venetian/German gilded and stained papers. That birthed the IDS Collection of patterns
derivative of classical woven textiles. All these projects remain within our basket of offerings. The commercial product line, which designer see in the showroom, is a fraction of work remaining in the Twigs archive. I do select a few archive samples for renditions. For the most part, they remain in the large cedar trunks, a resource waiting for a new generation to keep the art of utilizing antique wallpapers and fabrics for many decades to come.
What is your favorite pattern? Why?
About 15 years ago, I began using rolls of Japanese papers for my wallpapers. I was drawn to their durability and the unique texture they added to Twigs' handmade feel. By using a paper that's a blend of kozo and cotton/ hemp, the paper is strong enough to withstand multiple layers of silkscreen, hand-painting, and dyes.
Notably, there are no machines in the Twigs studio. Every part of our process is done by hand. The papers are laid out on long tables, where all of the printing, painting,

and dyeing magic happens. Even the dyes are made by hand in the outdoor patio area, carefully concocted by Rick's visual senses and 27 years of experience.
Though it's been challenging to adjust to the ever-changing tastes and interests in the decor/ design world, I've never let my artistic vision be blurred. I still keep an aged poster of the Villa Foscari - La Malcontenta (a villa near Venice, Italy) on my studio wall. It's a constant reminder of what initially sparked me to start this now thriving business. Behind Twigs' continued success in such a unique market is my unwavering vision and passion for art and all things beautiful.

The Most Memorable Olympic Uniforms of All Time
2024: Team USA
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will be kicking off soon, and Ralph Lauren has officially unveiled Team USA's parade uniforms for the opening and closing ceremonies.
For the ninth year in a row, the prestigious fashion label is the official outfitter of Team USA for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For this year's opening ceremony on July 26, athletes will wear a classic tailored blazer and striped oxford shirt paired with tapered jeans and a suede buck shoe. The full look features patriotic red, white and blue colors throughout.
1960: Team USA
The royal blue warm-up suits worn by the US women’s gymnastics team at the 1960 Olympics were simple yet powerful. With red-and-white piping details down the sides, these tracksuits nod to the era’s fascination with astronauts and space.
1968: Team Mexico
While not specifically created for Mexico’s athletes, the psychedelic uniforms designed by Irma Dubost and Julie Murdoch for the guides at Mexico City’s 1968 Summer Games are definitely worth a second look: a high-neck minidress with a sleeveless cape in a swirling print. The look feels perfectly in line with the mod movement of the time.
For the 1976 Winter Olympics in Colorado Springs, the figure skaters of Team USA during their downtime wore red leisure suits featuring a very ’70s silhouette, with high necks, flare hems, and red-white-and-blue star trim.
1976: Team USA
The red tank top and blue shorts worn by Team USA long jumper Martha Watson call to mind the ensemble of another superstar: Wonder Woman, as played by Lynda Carter in the TV series that debuted the same year.
1984: Team Japan
The sparkly flame design on Miwako Motoyoshi and Saeko Kimura’s white swimsuits—which featured a deep neckline—were quintessentially 1980s and are burned into many synchronized-swimming fans’ memories. Their elegant performance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles earned them the bronze medal.
2004: Team Russia
Russia’s Olympic synchronized-swimming team stunned at the 2004 Olympics in Athens—and not just because of their goldwinning performance. Their uniforms featured neon flower patterns on a sparkly neutral background that matched their skin so perfectly it appeared nearly sheer.
1988: Team USA 9
Florence Griffith Joyner was known for her speed—and her fierce personal style. In the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, she broke the Olympic record for the 100-meter dash wearing a hooded running suit complemented by red lipstick and her signature extra-long nails (painted patriotic red, white, and blue with gold accents in honor of the medal she was after). Her good-luck nails worked: She actually ended up taking home three gold medals that year.
1976: Team USA
In 1996, all eyes were on the USA women’s gymnastics team, which was known as the Magnificent Seven. The team—which included Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu, Shannon Miller, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, Jaycie Phelps, and Dominique Dawes (pictured above)—would go on to win the United States’ first-ever team gold medal in the sport, wearing now iconic white leotards emblazoned with a large Stars and Stripes motif and scrunchies.
2012: Team India
The athletes of Team India were elegant at the opening ceremony for the 2012 London Games in coordinating canary yellow saris and Rajasthani pagris. Their march was famously interrupted by a crasher who ran from the stands to walk with them, but it was their striking uniforms that truly stole the show.
2018:
Team Mexico
Mexico’s alpine ski team wore black snowsuits adorned with intricate sugar skulls, a nod to their country’s well-known Day of the Dead tradition. The suits were designed for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics by alpine ski team leader Sarah Schleper, who is pictured wearing the uniform alongside teammate Rodolfo Dickson.
2020: Team Kenya
For the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—which actually took place in 2021, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic— the Kenyan delegation wore violet-and-red gingham dresses with billowing capes and strappy sandals. The look was created by Wanja Ngare, a Kenyan designer known for using prints, textiles, and silhouettes inspired by her Maasai culture.

and style. Informed by a deep understanding of design history and the art world, Smith’s work is the ultimate in elegance and luxury, reflecting an uncommon sense of scale and drama and a deft use of craftsmanship and materials. His interiors have earned him enduring accolades throughout the industry, as well as a devoted following of notable clients, from Hollywood mega talents such as
Shonda Rhimes to former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
This book is a celebration of Smith’s design aesthetic, a flawless blend of European classicism and American modernism. The projects range from a contemporary beach house in East Hampton to a Moroccaninfluenced Mallorca escape, as well as two
of Michael’s own homes, including his extraordinary apartment in a nineteenthcentury palace in Madrid. Smith shares his inspirations and design process, and explores what makes a room truly comfortable: Can people relax on the seating? Is the furniture arranged to encourage conversation? Is there enough light, and is it flattering?

FORWARD
Michael Smith is many things to many people—a vibrant talent, a visual genius, an unrelenting perfectionist, a part-time therapist, a force of nature. I concede that he is all of those things. But to me, Michael Smith is most of all a purveyor of joy.
My first meeting with Michael felt more like a first date. It was clear that he was deciding whether to choose me as a client as much as I was deciding whether to choose him as a designer. Michael vetted me. He poked and probed and asked careful questions, working to uncover the secrets to my
personality. This was not a breezy chat. He seemed to be making clear that his was not frivolous work— this was serious business. Answering every question, I was unnerved but also strangely delighted. Michael wanted really to know me. At the time, I did not understand why. Now, I understand why he will not work any other way.
As the design process unfolded, I saw that all of those probing questions had a purpose. I am an introverted and reserved person, and I am still unsure how Michael pulled so many personal details out of me about the home of my dreams. I only know that I felt completely comfortable with his knowing me on this intimate level. That intimacy shows up in the spaces he designs. He translated
the essence of me into a physical home. He worked to understand me. When he learned that as a writer I like to wander from room to room as I imagine a story, Michael created inviting nooks and havens in every space so that wherever I happened to be, there was a place to sit and invent. Once he discovered that I’m not a visual thinker in any way, he gave up on design images.
We talked, and then he turned my words into a vivid palette of comfort that matched my imagination.
I shared with him how my family spends time, how we sleep, what I keep in my closets.
Michael wove a beautifully authentic home, turning my quirks and passions—my addiction to
books, a ragged old chair holding ancient family memories, the many teapots I have overcollected, my need for impromptu dance parties—into magical qualities that are both visually stunning and supremely comfortable. His work left my homes feeling optimistic. It is an optimism that emanates from every drape, each stretch of wallpaper, every chair, every sink. My homes invite my family to be themselves and feel happy inside their walls. My homes reflect me in ways I never considered. And spending time in these Michael Smith-created spaces, I feel joyful. He delved into my soul, and then he handed my soul back to me in the form of joyful living.
Michael’s standards are purposeful. He probes and
pokes for a reason. His creativity requires finding a collaborative client, someone who will give of themselves, someone willing to open up their dreams. He wants to know more than where you live. He
wants to learn how you live. He wants to find the true essence inside of you; he wants to discover what defines who you are. Once that work happens, he fiercely protects that part of you through design.
HIGH PERFORMANCE & COMMERCIAL GRADE FABRIC
I’ve had a front row seat to this magic, and I am better for it. I have learned that Michael creatively thrives with this process. It is his air. It is his superpower. Michael will never deign to design a generically beautiful home. He is
happiest and his work is at its finest when a home matches its occupants. That is how he makes a home. That is how he purveys joy.

Journey Through The Evolution of Stone, Glass, and Gilding with Our Manufacturers
THE ART OF GOLD LEAF GILDING
MCLAIN WIESAND
A Historical Overview: The practice of applying gold leaf to objects for ornamentation dates back millennia. Ancient Egyptians used gold foil to decorate wood and furniture as early as the 23rd century BC. The Middle East has a long tradition of gilding metals, dating back to at least 3000 BC. This practice continues today, evident in the ornate metalwork found throughout the region.
Gilding techniques have evolved and spread across cultures. From gilded statuary in ancient Athens to intricate gilding on Tibetan vessels and South American artifacts, this decorative art has left its mark on civilizations worldwide. The gilded architectural embellishments of Cleopatra's palaces and temples are a

testament to the enduring appeal of gold leaf. In the 18th century, Louis XIV's lavishly gilded interiors solidified France's position as a leader in decorative arts.
The Gilding Process: A Closer Look: There are two primary methods of gilding wood: traditional water gilding and mordant gilding. Both techniques involve applying thin sheets of gold leaf to a prepared surface, but they differ in the adhesive used.
Mordant Gilding employs an oil-based size or a waterbased adhesive to secure the gold leaf. Once the adhesive is dry, the leaf is applied and gently pressed into place.
A clearcoat of shellac can be added to protect the gilded surface and subdue the brilliance of the gold. Patinating materials can also be used to create aged or contrasting effects. Mordant gilding offers a versatile finish, with a range of tonal qualities from matte to moderately bright.
Traditional Water Gilding is a more intricate process, involving the application of gold leaf to a meticulously prepared surface using a protein binder and gesso. The gold leaf is laid onto a wet clay bole, and then burnished to achieve a high luster. This technique is often used for frames and furniture, and it produces a beautiful, satin-like finish.
Is inspired by a mirror from Cindy Crawford's home (pictured on the right), hence the name. The mirror around the perimeter is hand stamped in silver ink and then misted with green dye stain until the desired color was achieved. The mirror on the interior is lightly antiqued and the frame is gilded. The patterns were all hand drawn by David Wiesand and then turned into custom stamps specifically for this project. I love the little dancing man! Shown in Hand Ornamented Green Glass.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GLASSBLOWING: ORIGINS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
SIEMON & SALAZAR
The art of glassblowing is believed to have originated in the 1st century BC in the regions of modern-day Israel, Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon. The Roman Empire, recognizing the potential of this new craft, established large-scale glassworks to produce both utilitarian and decorative items.
INNOVATION AND MOLD-BLOWN GLASS: A significant breakthrough occurred when glassblowers discovered the technique of using molds to create more complex and intricate

"The element of the unknown has always attracted me to glass and to California, for that matter," says Carmen. "There's a tangible sense of adventure, as well as beauty, layered within the landscape. We try to embrace that."

designs. This innovation, known as mold-blown glass, revolutionized the industry and expanded the possibilities of glassworking.
VENETIAN GLASS: A RENAISSANCE MASTERPIECE: The secrets of glassblowing were brought to Venice through trade with the Middle East, where the city quickly became a leading center of glass production. The Venetian government, recognizing the economic value of this craft, relocated glassmakers to the island of Murano to protect their knowledge and prevent the city from being destroyed by fires caused by numerous furnaces.
SPREADING THE CRAFT: While the Venetian government sought to maintain a monopoly on glassmaking, some skilled artisans managed to escape Murano and spread their techniques to other parts of Europe. The publication of "L'Arte Vetraria," a glassmaking guide written by Antonio Neri, further disseminated the knowledge of glassblowing.
GLASSBLOWING COMES TO AMERICA: The art of glassblowing eventually made its way to the Americas, where it continued to evolve and flourish. American glassmakers developed their own unique styles and techniques, contributing to the rich tapestry of glassblowing history.

THE STONE AGE OF FURNITURE
ROBERT JAMES COLLECTION
The history of stone furniture stretches back to the Neolithic period when early humans, armed with rudimentary tools, carved functional pieces like chairs and stools directly from stone. This practice is evident in sites like Skara Brae in Scotland, where entire stone houses, including furniture, were constructed due to the region's lack of wood.
Evolution of Stone Furniture: as civilizations advanced, so too did stone carving techniques. Early furniture was likely shaped through basic percussion methods, using hammers and chisels made from harder stones. Over time, craftsmen developed more refined techniques, allowing for intricate designs and detailed features. Regional variations arose as different cultures utilized the stone readily available to them, resulting in distinct styles and aesthetics.
Ancient Egyptian tombs are renowned for their stone sarcophagi and chairs. Greek and Roman architecture also featured stone benches and tables. During the Middle Ages, stone remained a popular material for large, heavy furniture pieces, particularly in castles and monasteries. While less common today due to the availability of other materials, contemporary artisans continue to use stone for unique, highend furniture pieces, employing modern tools to create intricate designs.
The Stone Making Process: the process of creating stone furniture begins with quarrying large blocks of stone. Suitable types are selected based on desired aesthetics and durability. The stone is then roughly shaped using chisels and hammers, followed by finer carving techniques to add details and designs. Finally, the surface is polished to achieve a smooth finish.

☑ All furniture and lighting orders ship FOB (“Free On Board, Factory”) which means that once an order leaves the factory it is the responsibility of you and your receiver to manage any damage incurred in transit.
☑ Confirm that your receiver’s policy is to unpack and inspect shipments within 48 hours of delivery if inspection does not occur immediately, as damage may also be concealed.
☑ Shipments should ideally be unpacked and inspected immediately upon arrival at the receiver. Should shipments arrive with visible damage to either packing materials or product within, a detailed description of the damage should be noted on the shipper’s Bill of Lading (BOL) or Proof of Delivery (POD) prior to the truck’s departure from the loading dock.
☑ Copies of the BOL or POD, along with photographs of the damage, must be emailed to M-Geough within these 48 hours. The receiver must retain all packing materials and the damaged goods until released by M-Geough. Failure to comply with these critical steps and timeline may result in claims being denied by the shipping company.
☑ Any damaged item that is delivered by your receiver to your client prior to its release by M-Geough will result in a denial of claims by the shipping company. Repairs to the goods will then be your receiver’s responsibility since once a product leaves the warehouse, it is no longer the responsibility of the shipping company.
OLYMPIC THEME SONGS
The modern era has witnessed a surge in brand-specific audio identities, adopted by companies, advertisers, sports leagues, and film franchises. One prime example is the James Bond series, renowned for its meticulous approach to music. Composers are tasked with creating scores that adhere to strict guidelines, capturing the essence of the franchise.
The concept of a film theme song is fascinating, demanding composers to condense the narrative, emotions, and plot into a concise piece. This challenging endeavor, when executed successfully, is truly remarkable. That's why I'm a fan of the "Best Song Written for a Motion Picture" category at award shows like the Grammys, Oscars, and Golden Globes. To me, distilling the essence of a film into a song is an even greater artistic feat than conveying the same message through a full score.
Sporting events have also embraced theme songs, such as the FIFA and Rugby World Cups. However, the Olympics stand out as the most iconic example. Dating back to 776 BC in Ancient Greece, the Olympics are one of the oldest sporting events in history.
The modern Olympic Games were revived by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, inspired by the ideas of Greek poet Panagiotis Soutsos and philanthropist Evangelos Zappas. Today, the Olympics encompass various events, including the Winter, Summer, Youth, and Paralympic Games, representing 40 sports.
Music has always been an integral part of the Olympics. From 1912 to 1948, medals were even awarded for artistic achievements in sports, including music, painting, and sculpture. In this article, I'll highlight five Olympic themes that epitomize the spirit of their respective eras.
WHITNEY HOUSTON: ONE MOMENT IN TIME (1988, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREAN OLYMPICS)
Whitney Houston's iconic performance of "One Moment in Time" at the 1988 Seoul Olympics remains a defining moment in both music and sports history. The song, penned by Albert Hammond and John Bettis and produced by Narada Michael Walden, was commissioned as part of the official soundtrack for the games.
The Seoul Olympics, held during the Cold War, marked a significant milestone for South Korea, showcasing its remarkable economic recovery following the Korean War. The event aimed to project a positive image of the nation to the world.
Houston's powerful rendition of "One Moment in Time" perfectly captured the spirit of the Olympics. Recorded in London during her "Moment of Truth World Tour," the song features the London Symphony Orchestra and was produced at the legendary AIR Studios.
The performance, which aired at the opening ceremony, quickly became a global sensation, reaching No. 1 in the UK and peaking at
No. 5 in the US. The song's enduring popularity and its association with sporting events have solidified its status as one of the greatest Olympic anthems of all time.
Beyond its musical impact, "One Moment in Time" played a crucial role in elevating the profile of the Seoul Olympics and showcasing South Korea's remarkable transformation. Houston's performance served as a powerful symbol of unity, hope, and the human spirit, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire generations.
FREDDIE MERCURY AND MONTSERRAT CABALLÉ: BARCELONA (1992, BARCELONA, SPAIN
The 1992 Barcelona Olympics, held in the aftermath of the Cold War and apartheid, marked a significant moment in global sports history. It was a time of unity and celebration, despite the looming threat of terrorism.
While the official theme song, "Amigos Para Siempre," was performed by José Carreras and Sarah Brightman, the opening
ceremony featured a unique and unforgettable collaboration. Freddie Mercury, the legendary frontman of Queen, and the renowned opera singer Montserrat Caballé joined forces to create a timeless duet, "Barcelona."
Their collaboration was a testament to the power of music to transcend genres and unite people. The song, a blend of classical and rock elements, was a fitting tribute to the vibrant city of Barcelona and the spirit of the Olympic Games.
Tragically, Freddie Mercury passed away before the games began. However, his legacy lived on through "Barcelona," which became a global hit and a symbol of hope and resilience. The song's success also helped to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic, which was a pressing issue at the time.
CÉLINE DION: THE POWER OF THE DREAM (1996, ATLANTA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA)
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics marked the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games and the fourth time they were hosted in the United States. It was also the first time the Summer and Winter Olympics were held in alternating even years, a decision made by the International Olympic Committee in 1994. Atlanta would be the last North American city to host the Summer Games until Los Angeles in 2028.
The games were held from July 19 to August 4, and were marred by a tragic terrorist attack on Centennial Park on July 27. Despite this, the Olympics helped revitalize Atlanta's downtown, and the Olympic Village was later transformed into university housing.
The official theme song for the Atlanta Games was "Reach," performed by Gloria Estefan at the closing ceremony. Estefan's fellow recording artist, Céline Dion, was selected to perform at the opening ceremony. Dion's song, "The Power of the Dream," was co-written by the legendary songwriter David Foster, his wife Linda Thompson, and R&B producer Babyface. Thompson was previously married to Bruce Jenner and had been Elvis Presley's girlfriend in the 1970s. The song featured the Centennial Choir, conducted by Gospel music legend Mervyn Warren, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Dion performed "The Power of the Dream" in front of 100,000 people and a global television audience of over 3.5 billion. The song was only officially released as a single in Japan, but it later appeared on Dion's 2000 greatest hits compilation, "The Collector's Series, Volume One." Dion donated her earnings from the performance to support Canadian athletes. USA Today ranked "The Power of the Dream" as the second-best Olympic theme song of all time, behind Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time." The song remains a powerful testament to Dion's vocal talent.
HEATHER SMALL: PROUD (2012, LONDON, BRITAIN)
Heather Small's anthem, "Proud," is more than just a song; it's a testament to her enduring talent and a cultural touchstone. Emerging from the 1990s pop sensation M People, Small's solo career blossomed with "Proud," a track that resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.
Initially associated with the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the song's uplifting message of pride and determination captured the spirit of athletic achievement. Its enduring popularity led to a revival in 2005, playing a pivotal role in the UK's successful bid to host the 2012 London Olympics.
Beyond its Olympic connections, "Proud" found a broader audience through its use in popular culture. From the television series "Queer as Folk" to Oprah Winfrey's 20th season, the song's inspiring lyrics and anthemic melody resonated with diverse audiences.
"Proud" remains a testament to Heather Small's artistry and the song's timeless appeal. Its cultural impact, from the Olympic stage to the living rooms of millions, solidifies its place as a modern classic.
MUSE: SURVIVAL (2012, LONDON, BRITAIN)
The 2012 London Olympics, the 30th edition of the modern Games, showcased teams from 206 nations. Britain, eager to impress, used the Sydney 2000 Olympics as a blueprint.
Under the direction of Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle, the opening ceremony was a stunning spectacle. The closing ceremony featured a star-studded lineup of British music icons, including George Michael, Queen, and the Spice Girls. The stage, designed by Damien Hirst, was a striking Union Jack.
Muse, a British progressive rock band, provided the closing ceremony's theme song. Formed in 1994, they gained mainstream success with hits like "Supermassive Black Hole." In 2011, lead singer Matthew Bellamy was asked to write an Olympic theme song. Though initial momentum faded, he continued working on the project, inspired by the event's spirit.
"Survival" was the result, a song that reflected the album's themes of societal collapse and environmental decay. The song's nostalgic sound, reminiscent of classic artists like Elton John and Queen, resonated with audiences. It peaked at No. 22 in the UK, while the album, "The 2nd Law," reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 2 in the USA.
The use of music and celebrity in major events like the Olympics is a tradition dating back centuries. In ancient times, churches employed music to guide their flocks. Today, celebrities are used to attract audiences to brands, products, and events. The Olympics, with its global reach, is no exception. Theme songs like "Survival" not only unite people but also capture the spirit and culture of the host country.
LADY
GAGA AND CELINE DION: 2024, PARIS, FRANCE
The 2024 Paris Opening Ceremony was a star-studded affair, featuring breathtaking performances from two iconic singers: Lady Gaga and Celine Dion.
Gaga kicked off the evening with a spectacular rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire's "Mon truc en plumes" along the Seine River. The performance, featuring dancers in black outfits with pink feathers, was a tribute to French art and music. Gaga expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to perform for the French people and celebrate their rich history.
Following the ceremonial cauldron lighting, Celine Dion took the stage in a shimmering silver gown. Her emotional rendition of Edith Piaf's "Hymne à l'amour" captivated the audience. The performance held special significance for Dion, as it marked her return to the stage after her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome.

Top Five Reasons to Rebrand Your Company
Change is hard and WE as a design community are encouraged to lead the charge, set the example, and build our environments for the future. These changes are especially hard when it comes to changing the way we run our business practices. But it was once said, “be the change,” so here are five great ways to think about your business in a more sustainable way:
1
2
Build out a three-step plan. A simple and straightforward plan can help guide you and your team on a path to create healthy and happy business changes. If your company is enacting sustainability efforts for the first time, it’s a good idea to start with simple goals that can be met. These can help you build early momentum with your eco-friendliness.
Work and purchase with companies who source their own materials and tap talent within their communities. So much of our responsibility as designers is to champion new talent and keep our trades in business. Much like your business, these small businesses fuel our economy.
3
4
Charitable giving can be a crucial part of your sustainability strategy. For example, when your company donates unused items to the community, you prevent them from entering a landfill. Monetary charitable donations or team volunteering opportunities can also be part of your sustainability mission.
Recycle where you can, collaborate with other businesses who might be able to use your extras for their gain.
5 Finally, share office supplies and resources with fellow business or other design firms.
