Newsletter No.35 Friday 16th November 2012 Dear Parents Last Wednesday night I was blessed to attend the Graduation Evening of this year’s Ironmen’s “Winning at Work and Home” course. Twenty mostly Hebron fathers spent 16 evenings studying how to be ‘winners” in their home as husbands and fathers and also in their workplaces as employers, employees, colleagues, etc. All the men testified to the fantastic teaching they received and their strong desire to put the knowledge and skills into practice in order to make a difference for the GOOD to all those around them and to those who look up to them as leaders and role models. Hebron Dads, George Douglas and Scott Bennett are to be achknowledged for the commitment to this task and the effort they have put into Ironmen to see these courses happen in our school, positively touching the lives of our menfolks. Check out the upcoming event at the end of the newsletter and go to the Ironmen website to register for next year’s course that will start next February. Go to: www.ironmen.org.nz

Hebron Happenings Auckland Christian Schools Touch Rugby 20 students from Year 5 to 8 took part in the ACS (Auckland Christian School) Touch Rugby Tournament on Tuesday 13th November at Moires Park, Massey. The purpose of the tournament was to build strong relationships between Christian Schools in Auckland and to share the love of Christ. Art teacher, Miss Suh and Mrs Atkins-Lam volunteered to look after teams and to support the players. The Year 5-6 team won one game out of three, and the Year 7-8 team won one game out of six. Each players showed great enthusiasm and commitment to the team and the competition. It was a great opportunity for students to connect and enjoy the friendly rivalry between schools in the love of Lord, and to glorify God through using the bodies which he has gifted to us. Well done team!

Ethnic Food Year 7 & 8 are doing “ Food from Other Cultures” for the first 5 weeks of this term. Today they made a Korean kimbap. Mrs Hart, the Food technology teacher, encouraged any students who had made it before, to show their class how to assemble the ingredients and roll it up. Cole Henderson is not Korean but he made the best kimbap today.

Solar Eclipse Hebron students were able to view this week’s partial solar eclipse thanks to our Science teacher and hobbyist astronomer, Mr Darrell Crisp, who brought his telescope along to school to safely view the event. We also had some special sunglasses for observing the solar eclipse and these were most helpful too. We all noticed how dim the skylight was around morning tea time and also how cold it got while the sun’s rays were obscured by the moon. The next eclipse with this amount of obscuration seen from New Zealand will not occur until 2028 and Auckland will not see a better solar eclipse until 2035….only 23 years to wait!

Eden-Albert Primary Athletic Champs Year 5 student Luka Crosbie excelled at today’s Eden-Albert primary Schools Athletic Champs at Margaret Griffen Park winning the discus, long jump and high jump for his age group (10yr Boys). Well done Luke! Luka could have entered and won the sprint races too, we believe, but could not compete in that event because of an on-going foot injury.

Coming Up… Thank You Morning Tea Each year, the School Board and staff put on a “Thank You” morning tea in the hall to express our gratefulness to Hebron parents, relatives and even people unconnected to the school who have voluntarily helped us throughout the year in a multitude of ways. Letters of invitation have been sent to many who we would like to see at the morning tea on Thursday morning, 22nd Nov at 10:30am but if you didn’t get an invitation but believe you qualify, by all means roll along.

Celebration Day Every year in late November we have a "Celebration Day". The day first began in 1990 when the school decided to celebrate the financial "miracle" that occurred when the Institute in Basic Life Principles purchased the property and saved the school from possible bankruptcy. Many miracles and awesome acts of God have taken place in the school since that time. In recent years, we have used the day to celebrate God's goodness to us as individuals, families, churches, school and as a nation. The following activities are planned for next Friday: 1. MUFTI DAY All students are invited to wear mufti to school on Celebration Day. Hats must be worn by ALL students during the afternoon Tabloid Sports and it is strongly recommended sunblock be applied to face, arms and legs as well as we will be out in the sun for 2 hours! Children are asked to pay $2 to wear mufti with the proceeds going towards the New Life Foundation Orphanage in Tanzania. 2. CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY An assembly will be held between 11am and midday to celebrate God’s goodness to us. Classes will put on items and students and teachers will testify to God’s blessing in their lives

3. AFTERNOON TABLOID SPORTS PROGRAMME A Tabloid Sports programme will be run in the afternoon for the whole school. Children will be placed in one of 30 mixed-age, mixed-gender teams and given the opportunity to participate in a number of fun-type activities. Prizes will be offered for the teams with the most points (competition and behaviour). 4. SAUSAGE SIZZLE & SOFT DRINK A Sausage Sizzle Lunch will be organised by the Y10 students. Pupils are invited to buy a sausage wrapped in bread and a drink for the total price of $3 (extra sausages $1.50). Money for the sausages and drinks can be brought on the day. 5. ICE BLOCK Children will be given an ice block at the end of the day’s activities.

School Survey The School Board and staff of Hebron Christian College desire to serve the Christian community of Auckland City by providing a Christian education service that meets the needs of all sections of the Christian community. We are keen to know how the school is meeting YOUR needs so that improvements can be made on our delivery of Christian schooling. An online survey will be available to you via an email message asking you to rate and comment on a number of issues to do with school life, teaching, curriculum, communication, etc. We ask parents (not children) to complete the survey before the end of next week Aspects of the survey analysis will be communicated to parents in the school newsletter but other aspects will be used only for professional development and forward planning strategies. Thank you for your anticipated co-operation in completing this survey honestly and accurately.

2013 School Fees A letter will soon be distributed to families with children returning in 2013 detailing fees and requesting direct debit authorisation. A 4% Earlybird discount is offered to families who pay the fees in full by 1st December.

Secondary Girls Swimsuits Hebron Christian College has a compulsory uniform swimsuit for girls in Years 9-13 to wear during PE lessons, at swimming sports and on school camp. Every secondary girl in Years 9-12 will need to bring their swimsuit for swimming lessons on the first Monday of Term 1 2013 (4 Feb). As the weather warms up and families head to the beach, often a new swimsuit is needed. So we encourage families who are purchasing new swimsuits to take into consideration that their daughter will require a school swimsuit at the beginning of Term 1. This is especially important for families of Year 8 girls to note, as this will be the first time their daughters will have to wear the compulsory swimsuit. At this time of year, girls in Years 9-11 should also try on their swimsuits from last summer. It is important to check the size and, if necessary, purchase a new swimsuit in plenty of time for the start of the swimming programme on the first Monday of Term 1. Every year we have girls who do not try on their swimsuit until the day before they need to wear it and are shocked to find they have grown during the year, leaving them unprepared for the first swimming lesson. Let’s try to have everyone organised and ready to go for the start of swimming in 2013! The school uniform swimsuit is available from the uniform shop at a cost of $55. There is a Junior-sized girls navy swimming suit available from the uniform shop for $20. (This is not a compulsory uniform item)
