A CLOSER LOOK!

About the Cover The history of most ventures, whether sacred or secular, often

begins with a simple idea. Sometimes from this, a spark is fanned into flame, and the flame then becomes a fire in someone’s heart. Such was the beginning of Augusta Christian Schools. Miss Leila Havird, a young graduate of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, had returned to her hometown of Augusta with a burning in her heart to minister to area children. Chapter One of her life reveals that her ministry in Augusta began as area director of Child Evangelism Fellowship. In 1958, Miss Havird was praying about a Christian school in the Augusta area when the Lord spoke to her, “Why don’t you start the school?” You can imagine her surprise, but she responded, “I’ll try and see what the Lord will do.” The school began in the fall of 1958 with one teacher and eight kindergarten students and met at Druid Park Bible Church. The rest, as they say, is history*.

This year Augusta Christian Schools celebrates 55 years of Building Kingdom Leaders in the CSRA. The photos on the front are representative of the early years. With the Lord’s blessing we pray there will be many more years to come! (*For the complete history of ACS visit www.augustachristian.org.)

God Has Never Left the Building

his year marks our 55th year of ministry at Augusta Christian Schools. It all began with a dream Miss Leila Havird had and then became reality through the mighty hand of God.

A concentrated focus on mission work within our community and beyond.

Let me briefly reveal to you my sincere thoughts about a couple of these incredible feats. The first is enrollment. With an economy that is not prospering the way it should and many of our families suffering from job losses, we still have parents who sacrifice income and transportation to send their children to ACS. The outcome of God’s blessings is an increased student body with calls of interest still coming in as I am writing this article. This is happening only by the hand of God. The other area I will make note of is the Medical Health Sciences Academy. We now have a group of nine students in the clinical phase of this program who are ecstatic about the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the medical field.

Over the years, our school, with the Lord at the helm, has seen many peaks and valleys. Through prosperity and suffering God has never left the building. This year’s theme from 1 Peter 5:10 tells us, “The God of all grace who has called us to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, will renew and restore you.” This verse provides us with a snapshot of our Christian faith. A Two Year Christian College for Augusta

arly in the interview process for a new Head of School at Augusta Christian, “visionary” candidate, Dr. David M Piccolo, shared his dream of some day starting a distinctively different Christian College. As the weeks and months of the process continued, the much more basic topics of school administration were discussed. After the long list of candidates had been reviewed, Dr. Piccolo was unanimously chosen to become the new Head of Augusta Christian Schools.

Early in his first year of tenure a plethora of new ideas was being discussed among all school constituents. A new emphasis was placed on duel enrollment with interested area colleges. Augusta, being the home of the Georgia Medical Health Science University, the perfect conclusion was that Augusta Christian would be the ideal place to develop a Medical Health Sciences Academy. Among other equally exciting possibilities, the idea of a two year Christian College was beginning to be discussed.

Excitement mounted. A carefully chosen committee of faculty, Administrators, parents and local

business leaders, began meeting on a monthly basis.

I was honored to be chosen the committee chair person. With my many years working on accreditation projects both with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Christian Schools International, it seemed to be a perfect fit. By special appointment of Dr. Piccolo, Ms. Heather Patterson was appointed Executive Assistant to Dr. Bartlett for a year in special research.

Step number one was making contact with someone in Atlanta in the Higher Education Department to give us guidance. Mr. Cary Rivers directed us to his friend, State Representative Barry Fleming who helped us get the ball rolling with the gargantuan task that the college committee faced. The search led to Dr. Carl Camonn, Deputy Chairman of Nonpublic Post Secondary Education in the state of Georgia.

Dr. Camonn met with, Heather Patterson, Financial Officer, Les Walden, and me early in the spring of 2012 to discuss the process.

Many months of hard work lay ahead. The body of information required by the state at first seemed an impossible task. Volumes of data needed to be collected to see if, in fact, ACS could meet the requirements of its twelve standards, just one of which was the development of a complete college catalog. Dr. Camonn’s professional but kind and helpful spirit was encouraging.

When the three of us left Atlanta we knew that the task before us was daunting but by God’s grace and with the “team spirit” of those

chosen to work with us, we knew step by step, we would be conquerors.

Assignments were distributed to team members, and each month reports of accomplishments encouraged us to meet the next challenge. Work on each of the twelve standards was progressing on schedule, and a rather impressive Christian College of Augusta catalog began to emerge.

In the following months while work on the required standards continued and the additional work of required exhibits was begun, I made two more visits to Atlanta updating Dr. Camonn with progress reports.

It was obvious to Dr. Camonn that we were serious contenders and we would continue to press towards the prize of the high calling.

Believing that we were ready to deliver the completed documents representing our work to the State Department, Dr. Piccolo, Chris Williams and I, visited Dr. Camonn on March 20, 2013 with our final application for state approval. Dr. Camonn seemed a bit overwhelmed at the volume of the documents submitted. After a lengthy perusal of the paperwork, followed by much discussion he said, “I am comfortable and confident that Christian College of Augusta will have state approval and open its doors in the fall of 2014.”

Is all of the work completed?

Our Best Years are Yet to Come

uring the 2012-2013 school year, Augusta Christian School celebrates fifty-five years of service and devotion to Christian education.

From our humble beginnings as a kindergarten with an enrollment of five students to a thriving college preparatory school with over six hundred students, Augusta Christian has continued to be a leader in Christian education locally, nationally and internationally. God has faithfully blessed our school as we choose to stand firm in His teachings without compromise. Sustaining a private, Christian school in varying economic times and thwarting challenging worldly influences has not been an easy task. Each year, after prayerful consideration, our Administrative Team chooses a verse for the coming year. Reflecting over the past fifty-five years and focusing on the current and future plans for ACS, 1 Peter 5:10 is the perfect verse for encouraging continued perseverance knowing that God has wonderful plans in store for ACS and “our best years are yet to come”. I Peter 5:10 : “But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory

by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” Our mission of “Building Kingdom Leaders” has not changed and our school remains a vibrant place for spiritual, academic, emotional and physical training for our students, faculty and staff.

At ACS, our students, faculty and staff focus on “being the hands and feet” of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our Missions Program is a fundamental component in teaching our students this concept of Christian service.

Senior students began the year with a visit to Chester, South Carolina to do some “touch up” at the YMCA and community service with Christian homeless and underprivileged service organizations. Additionally, a group of ninth graders spent a weekend with the residents in Graniteville working around the train wreck site as well as touring a few landmarks near the old Graniteville Company. They, together with students previously involved in this project, were recognized by the citizens of Graniteville with a "Spirit of Graniteville" award. Our students have helped to “revitalize” citizens’ interest in restoring Graniteville to a healthy and productive community. Our Mission team also made a trip to the state of Alabama to revisit the areas still recovering from tornado devastation. Our students worked tirelessly over the summer months freely giving of their time, energy and effort to aid communities in disaster relief. Additionally, students travel to Cocoa

Beach, Florida to help in that community and to serve First United Methodist Church in homeless meal preparation, outreach activities, church repair, touch-up, and cleaning as well as to serve in the distribution of food, clothing and supplies to the many needy families in this economically challenged area. Our seniors will once again be going to Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana the last week in February to work with Youth with a Mission in schools, churches, housing projects and community service activities. Finally, ACS has ongoing devotion to Operation Christmas Child, the used coat drive as well as “Shoes for Swaziland” missions in partnership with Warren Baptist Church.

In addition to our Mission’s focus, Augusta Christian Schools’ International Student Exchange Program is a vital division of our ministry. Currently attending ACS are students from South Korea, China, Thailand and Egypt. These students are reaping the benefits of total immersion in a Christian English speaking school for spiritual, academic, social and physical preparation for service in their home countries.

We are blessed to be a sponsor of cultural exchange which benefits our American students as they are exposed to multicultural diversity. Our teachers rave about our international ministry: “I’ve enjoyed my Asian students this year. Their work effort, respectfulness and sweetness have reinvigorated me to try and be a better teacher. I talk about them all of the time with my family. I just love and respect them so much. I know I couldn’t have done what they are doing when I was their age. I try to point this out to my American students, often. Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the language barrier but that has become a point of humor and challenge in my life. I’ll never forget your words when you first shared with us that they were coming. You said that “…most of us will never get to go to China as missionaries but the mission field was coming to us.” I try to remember that I’m not just teaching but I’m planting a seed that hopefully will sprout someday in their lives and I’ll get to see them again someday in heaven.”

Augusta Christian Schools consistently explores avenues to better equip our students for Christian service after high school. Our Medical Health Science Academy is in its second year of operation with students participating in Clinical training in our area hospitals and nursing facilities. A Blessed Year

W

uring the 2012-2013 school year, the Talent Development Program has been immensely blessed! We have three new teachers on staff that have truly risen to the bar set by our current faculty and each of these teachers, as well as every member of the Talent Development faculty is full of the love of Christ Jesus and subject area knowledge, both of which they readily impart to your students. We are blessed to also have an additional full-time teacher’s assistant (lucky number 7!) joining us this January! She is Kristy Lyon, who previously taught high school classes at ACS, is an avid reader, an on-fire believer and is a mother to former ACS graduates.

We are successfully providing additional programs and opportunities to our student body! This year marked the addition of two Talent Development Reading Classes, part classroom instruction and part online, for our Middle School and for our High School students. These students have seen great success and continue to increase their reading levels, vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills and their confidence! Under the recommendation of a Talent Development family, ACS has also been able to provide the opportunity for students to participate in the 4-H Program. 4-H stresses education, rising to a challenge, citizenship, leadership and forging new friendships!

Our enrollment has been blessed as well. In the Talent Development Program, we’ve added many new students, of all grade levels this year! At present, we have over 90 full-time Talent Development students and also service mainstream students in almost 50 classes. Mr. Cary Rivers and I are also fielding calls and meeting with many families interested in having their students become Augusta Christian Lions as well!

We have the support of our families and for this, we are truly blessed! We continue to be buoyed by the strength of our relationships and partnerships with each Talent Development family. Thank you for your trust, for your prayers, and for giving us the most precious gift…time with your children!

The Lord has His hand on ACS and will continue to fortify His school as we build future and Kingdom Leaders. It is our privilege and our passion to serve your family, as we serve Him! Georgia Special Needs Scholarship Augusta Christian Schools accepts students through the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship Program. The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship provides eligible special needs students with the opportunity to attend an approved private school. We are extremely blessed to have accepted several new students into our Talent Development Program!

Augusta Christian School’s Talent Development Program is specifically designed for students with a learning disability and/or Attention Deficit Disorder. Classes are offered in grades one through twelve, depending upon availability. Class size ranges from five to fourteen students, allowing the school to provide individualized attention through a multi-sensory approach to learning. Augusta Christian Schools is comprised of caring teachers skilled in their subject areas and compassionate teaching assistants. The school’s Talent Development Program builds on strengths, focuses on weaknesses, challenges students to perform at their full potential, enhances selfconfidence and provides tools necessary for success. Another Horizon

he Lord provides numerous horizon’s for us throughout our lives: up’s and downs, changes, adjustments, hills and valleys, course corrections. His wisdom is greater than ours, but He also gives us choices as we go about our time seeking to top the hill for the next horizon. ACS Elementary is about to have a new “horizon” beginning soon, with the change in principals.

Mrs. Liz Lowery will be taking over as principal as this year ends. Presently, she is Kindergarten Administrator (K3, K4, and K5) at the ACS Fury’s Ferry campus. She will be meeting with me consistently for the remainder of this year so we can share information about the make-up, management, and movements in, and of, this elementary school. Our goal is to seek consistency as the leadership changes, but also encourage openness to innovation and change. No two leaders are ever the same.

As ACS Elementary Principal for the previous ten years, I have been blessed with wonderful faculty and staff who care about students and seek God’s guidance as they partner with parents in the raising of the children they share. That is no small undertaking on the part of home and school. Our prayers consistently go out for the children loaned to us and for their families. We covet the prayers of our parental partners and seek God’s wisdom in making decisions about all that affect school and family. Mrs. Lowery has joined with parents, faculty, and staff as a prayer warrior in her present position.

On the horizon for elementary students this spring are field trips to experience, chapels to learn from, class parties to enjoy, visiting speakers sharing exciting

information, exchanges with others in the classroom, playground time to enjoy, weekly trips to specials classes, Accelerated Reader books to “devour” and test on, class assignments to complete, corrections to be made, homework to finish, friends to interact with, prayers to offer up, Bible verses to memorize, Spring Carnivals to attend, class discussions to join in, lunches to eat with classes or parents, achievement tests to complete, special projects to construct, musicals to perform, field days to savor, award ceremonies to attend, and summer activities to plan and do.

Spring semesters for elementary schools are consistently busy and seem to run “down hill” at breakneck speed toward summer. Then, summer activities at ACS begin in earnest with sports camps, science camps, and daily activities outside of the school realm. However, there is always that ‘Horizon” of a new school year lurking just over the crest in the calendar hanging on the wall. May the Lord bless each school year for your child as they view, climb, and achieve here at ACS. On a personal note, it has been a true blessing to me while serving here at ACS. As I have said many times “Augusta Christian School is a ‘good’ place, but not a ‘perfect’ place.” No place is perfect, but ACS is certainly striving to seek God’s will daily, which continuously points toward perfection. During my time as a school principal, I have served only two schools, both of which were “good” places, but ACS, with its focus on Jesus, and seeking to build God’s kingdom in and through the hearts and minds of young people, is the more blessed for sure.

My prayers continue for ACS and ‘all’ who make it that ‘good’ place. God bless each of you, and thanks for the blessings you help make here in His name.

medical terminology and nursing essentials as well as receive the highest certification in CPR/First Aid and become licensed as a Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). We are excited about the expansion of this program to include training in physical therapy and other medical education pathways. Thank God for His provision in this program as our students are trained to serve our community in the medical field.

Our challenging academic program prepares students to enter competitive colleges and universities. Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes challenge students to achieve excellence. Beta, Spanish and French Clubs provide students with opportunities to serve the world while they enjoy club activities. Students in the Choral program of our Fine Arts Department consistently participate in the Georgia Music Educators competitions while our Art program attends competitions each year in an effort to broaden students’ exposure and appreciation for various expressions of art. The Band program offers musical instruction with outstanding performances on the Middle and High School levels. The ACS Quiz Bowl team participates in SCISA as well as public school competitions each school year. The ACS cheerleaders have achieved the prestigious “National Champions” designation many times over the past four years. Athletic programs include football, swimming, tennis, cross country, volleyball basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, golf and soccer. The ACS Lions football team won the State Championship again in 2012! These activities keep our student athletes busy with practice schedules and games that bring enjoyment for the players and spectators alike. Their schedules are demanding, but our students find that through Christ, they can do all things. Our students are engaged in challenging curriculum that will prepare them to serve Jesus Christ as Lord after graduation from high school no matter what profession God leads them to pursue.

perfect 13-0 record! Our 2012 Varsity Cheer Squad won the SCISA AAA GameTime Division Championship! These teams have garnered dozens of team and individual awards and both were recognized on the floor of the Georgia State Senate and House!

Facilities continue to be improved and upgraded with significant improvements this year to our baseball facilities. The home dugout has been refurbished as well as improvements made to the field and future plans include a new batting cage. We have added a high-jump pit for our track program and continue to seek to improve opportunities for offcampus facility usage.

With the great excitement surrounding our athletic program, Christ-centeredness continues to be our goal. We pray that we are helping to build Godly, kingdom leaders for Christ as we teach our students, through the realm of athletics Colossians 3:23 “whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men”.

he Augusta Christian Schools Fine Arts Department has already had great opportunities to lead the ACS family to continue growing during the 2012-2013 academic year. It takes each block division of our Fine Arts Department—Art, Band, Drama and Chorus to cooperate and work together to build a great program that develops the talents and skills with which our students have been gifted.

and we are already making plans for next year. Our Spring Musical this year will be “Godspell,” the familiar pop-rock Broadway hit based on the Gospel of Matthew. Rehearsals are in full swing and students are busy preparing for April 25, 26, & 27 at West Acres Baptist Church. Mark your calendars!

In our Choral Department, Miss Erin Wilkerson, Elementary music instructor is having a blast with events such as Grandparent’s Day, with our first separate celebration for the Kindergarten students and grandparents. The children enjoyed performing for their families and getting to spend time with them afterward. Third graders are working hard on our new curriculum for recorders: Recorder Karate, and earn colored belts for their recorders with each song learned. They are having fun while learning to read music. e hope that you have had a blessed and encouraging school year to date. The Development and Admissions Office continues to be challenged and blessed. Our 2012-13 Vision Fund, as well as overall donations, have been running below our budgeted projections. We will continue to trust God for the 20 percent that tuition and fees don’t cover. Our annual Coupon Sale grossed over $50,000 and Georgia Goal contributions for 2012 were up 30 percent from last year. Additional funds were given and pledged for the façade, athletic field house, tuition assistance, building fund and many more of our athletic booster clubs. Our association with the Millennium Business Group (credit card processing) continues to be a blessing in the partnership with commercial merchants. This program continues to bring thousands of dollars to ACS. The schedule for the Spring includes our annual Golf Tournament and our Spring Carnival and Auction were a big success.

Enrollment for the current school year has been one of the greatest blessings this school has ever seen. Over 200 new students have enrolled since the start of school this year, and we went over the 600 mark in January! Mrs. Banks, Mr. Wells, Mrs. Montgomery and Mrs. Lowery have diligently worked with me to bring in and encourage families as they complete the admissions process. With over 30 international students, around 25 families from Fort Gordon, and 26 students in our Homestudies Program, ACS has touched many areas of the world and our community with our mission and vision. Re-enrollment and new family inquiries continue to be very encouraging for the 2013-2014 school year.

Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program Thanks to all of who participated in redirecting a portion of your Georgia State tax to the GOAL Scholarship Program. By taking part in this program we are able to increase our tuition assistance. Anyone who pays Georgia state taxes may participate by redirecting up to $1,000 if you file single or up to $2,500 if you file jointly. randparents’ Day is one of our favorite special days at ACS! Grandparents came from all over the US for this year’s event, and what a blessing it was to have them here! This year we held two Grandparents’ Day programs—one at the main campus and one at the Kindergarten campus. After entertaining programs by our students, grandparents enjoyed classroom visits and delicious treats provided by our ACS room mothers. May the Lord continue to bless all of our Grandparents!

ur annual Christmas Caroling in the ACS neighborhood followed by the Tree Lighting Ceremony was a wonderful way to kickoff the Christmas Season! The singing was joyful, the cocoa was hot, the cookies were delicious and the fellowship was sweet as we celebrated the birth of our Savior ACS-style! As always, it was very moving to see the Lights for Lydia Luminaries all across the front of the campus honoring women who have suffered with cancer. Thanks to the ACS Beta Club and Student Council for providing refreshments and serving all who attended.

Mr. Terry Rutherford was honored with the US Marines Semper Fidelis Award at the 'Game Night Live' WJBF Channel 6 game on September 13. He was chosen for the US Marines Semper Fidelis Award because he is the epitome of honor, courage and commitment as he goes about his duties at Augusta Christian Schools.

Mrs. Jacky Stone was named SCISA Master Teacher last September. SCISA is comprised of 105 schools, 28,000 students and 8,000 teachers.

Mrs. Stone was selected because of her excellent teaching strategies and ability to assist students to be the best they can be.

Coach Keith Walton was the recipient of WJBF’s Golden Apple Award last September.

Coach Walton received a surprise visit from WJBF’s Brad Means who presented him with the award. He was nominated by Kobie Brinson.

Matt Herzwurm Matt Herzwurm was selected as WJBF’s Scholar Athlete. Matt is a four-year starter and captain at center for the football team. He was listed in the pre-season as a 'player to watch' by Augusta Magazine. He is also a three-year letterman in basketball. He has been selected as the Most Improved player and was awarded the Christian Character Award. For the baseball team, Matt was named Honorable Mention All-County and All-Area. Carrying 3 sports on his plate also means he has to keep up grades to compete. He has a 3.95 GPA and already has four Advanced Placement classes under his belt. Coach Marty Griffin says Matt's peers look up to him, respect his opinion, knowing that the stand-out student athlete will make the right decisions.

CS senior, Erick Sostre, is Augusta Christian’s STAR Student. The STAR Student honor is given to the senior with the highest SAT score.

Erick chose Mr. Mike Giddens, a 14-year history teacher at Augusta Christian, as his STAR Teacher. Both were recognized recently at a reception hosted by the Harlem Women’s Club.

Beyond his academic success, Erick is the leader of the ACS praise band, a defender on the Lions’ varsity soccer team, Chaplain of the Student Council, Treasurer of the Beta Club and participates in Drama Club. Erick hasn’t fully decided where he will study, but he’s been accepted to the University of Georgia and Stetson University in Florida. He plans on an international studies focus with business as a fallback.

Lions Win State Football Title

I

t is no small feat to upset a six-time defending state championship team, but that’s exactly what the Augusta Christian Lions did to win the SCISA AAA State Football Title.

Coach Walton won his first title and team’s first since 2005 after defeating Hammond 21-14. The win was the second time the Lions beat Hammond this year giving them a perfect 13-0 season.

“It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Coach Walton, “I’m so thankful for the senior class and the selflessness of the entire team.”

The Lions’ defense came up big in the game recovering five fumbles, three inside their own 10-yard line, and got the ball on downs in the fourth quarter after stopping Hammond at the fouryard line. “The offense takes a lot of the headlines. This game’s on the defense,” said Coach Walton. “They played unbelievable.

They all did a great job.”

n November 10, the ACS Lady Lions Cheerleaders came home with a first-time ever SCISA State Cheer Title. They’ve been runners-up three times but never won, so they made it their goal this year to come home with the number one spot.

Teams were judged on choreography, dance, jumps, stunts, difficulty of stunts and pyramids, as well as other categories. In addition, the Lady Lions were runners-up in the dance category.

In addition to their state title, the Lady Lions won the FCC National Title for the sixth consecutive year.

Boosterthon Fun Run The Boosterthon Fun Run was held in the fall. It was a great event for our school and raised around $20,000. From start to finish the Fun Run was well organized by the great Boosterthon staff and the students had a fantastic time.
