2018 NORTHWEST WASHINGTON FAIR PROGRAM / 3

Welcome TABLE OF CONTENTS

A Message from the Board of Directors Hello and welcome to the 108th Northwest Washington Fair! Thank you so much for joining us! This year, the Fair is jammed packed with fun for the whole family. Be sure to check out familiar favorites such as the Demolition Derby while also checking out the daily entertainment and Grandstand entertainment happening on the fairgrounds every day. Our theme this year is “Rooted in Agriculture”. Through many FFA, 4-H, and open class exhibits we encourage you to learn about agriculture’s importance in Whatcom County. Hard-working people have cared for the animals you see, and we thank them for their time and dedication. As we look forward to the building of the new Agricultural Education Center, our goal is to provide a place where members of our community, young and old alike, can come together to learn about agriculture both during the Fair, and the remainder of the year. Please join us in anticipating this exciting new addition! There is so much more the Fair has to offer! Flip through the pages of this program to see the schedules, events, and other exhibits taking place, and enjoy your week at the Fair!

First Timers’ Guide If this is your first time at the Northwest Washington Fair, or it’s your first visit in a long time, here is some helpful info: Before you ride • Some rides have height requirements. Check to see which rides your kids are big enough for so you don’t waste time standing in lines for rides they can’t go on. • Some rides do not allow children in sandals, so dress them in sneakers. They’ll be more comfortable, anyway. • Save the Moowich for after the ride. When you get overheated • There’s plenty of shade near the Banner Bank Festival Stage; take a break and enjoy a snack and some tunes or comedy from one of many acts throughout the day. • Stroll through the cooler concrete-floored exhibits or Phillips 66 Dairy Center.

Parking • All street parking is free in Lynden. Plus, there are several parking lots surrounding the Fair where you can park all day for just a few dollars. Most paid parking benefits local non-profits or schools. • Consider parking downtown; visit the businesses there and then take the free shuttle bus to the fairgrounds. See page 4 for a shuttle map. • Ride WTA - Free Fare Week! Take the bus from Bellingham for free. See page 64 for details.

B2WINS

LOUIE FOXX

Tammy selects willing volunteers from the audience and then puts them into a state of hypnosis. She guides them through a fun journey of the mind while the volunteers act on suggestions.

A stretch to understand without experiencing them live, B2wins have been exciting audiences worldwide with their distinctive appearance and unique approach to creating their own signature sound. Featuring a lead electric violin and ukulele, this dynamic powerhouse sets out to shatter every stereotype of a typical "band." They continue to turn heads whenever they perform, bringing a smile to faces all over the globe. B2wins are redefining live music.

Louie Foxx learned at an early age that he excelled at things adults thought were a waste of time and he's turned those skills into a career! In the show he makes his head shrink, balances a full glass of water upside down and much more all while making you laugh! Louie's been seen on the nationally syndicated television show How 'Bout That, NBC's America's Got Talent and is a two time Guinness World Record Holder, this is an act not to be missed!

MATT BAKER

KAREN QUEST - COWGIRL TRICKS

Dubbed "America’s Funniest Cowgirl”, Karen Quest has been blazing a trail since 1998 with her one-woman award-winning original comedy act, Cowgirl Tricks. Skillful trick roping, impressive whip cracking, magic, music, outstanding audience rapport and improvisational kooky cowgirl shenanigans have proven wildly popular at domestic and international venues for audiences of all ages.

SEAN TAYLOR Matt Baker’s show is a unique combination of hilarious stand up comedy and amazing stunts. His diverse skill set has landed him 5 Guinness World Records and appearances on Tosh.0, America’s Got Talent and Last Comic Standing. His hip, energetic, comedy stunt show is action packed with funny stories, audience participation and incredible skills that engage even the toughest crowd. His unique comfort level on stage sets the crowd at ease and allows them to want to be involved in every show. With clever comedy and jaw dropping stunts like catching a bowling ball on his head, spearing vegetables on spikes, escaping handcuffs and juggling with his mouth, Matt’s show rivals no other.

Bringing Hi-fidelity entertainment that spans space and time comes DJ Know0ne to spin tunes from the Beat Farm to your ears. Come by and join the dance party every weeknight during fair week!

Back by Popular Demand CHASE BARTON

Chase Barton comes from a family of performers; grandfather Jerry Harris and mother Tammy Harris Barton are stage Hypnotists. Chase started juggling when he was just 5 years old right here at the Northwest Washington Fair! He looks forward to showing you all the fun things he can juggle. You never know what he will throw up in the air!

BILL ROBISON Bill Robison’s uproariously funny blend of masterful physical comedy, mimic and audience improvisation has made him hands-down a favorite wherever he goes! Working entirely within the crowd, Bill creates “Living Caricatures” of unsuspecting concert goers. Bill’s specialty is highly spontaneous audience interactions. He lights up the crowd with infinite variety of delightfully hilarious (and slightly mischievous) antics. His high energy and physical mastery has thrilled crowds (often up to 10,000 people or more) in numerous venues across the country. Bill has warmed up for every conceivable type of audience demographic.

WENATCHEE YOUTH CIRCUS Amazing acts featuring trapeze, singing ladders, tightwire, teeterboard, and more! The Wenatchee Youth Circus has been called one of the top amateur circuses in the United States.

Lynden PRCA Rodeo Roughstock Events Scores depend on a combination of both the cowboy’s and the animal’s performance. If the rider’s bull or horse doesn’t buck, but just walks placidly around the ring, the score will be much lower than if the animal is lively. A cowboy must stay aboard the animal for 8 seconds to even get a score; the remainder of the score depends on how well both rider and animal perform.

• Bareback Riding • Saddle Bronc Riding • Bull Riding Featuring Bullfighters: Matt Akers, Ryan Manning Pick-up men: David Lewis, Blake West Judges: Michael Jones, Ray Jasper

Lynden PRCA Rodeo Rodeo Announcer, Jody Carper Jody spent his first 30 years in Big Spring TX, and rodeo has been a part of his life since the beginning. He and his brother competed in all of the timed events in junior rodeo and high school rodeo.  Being a contestant wasn’t Jody’s only connection to rodeo.  He and his brother used to play “rodeo” at their house and Jody would always be the announcer.  It seemed natural for him and other noticed too.  In 1991, just out of high school, Jody was asked to announce the local high school rodeo.  That started him being hired to announce junior and amateur rodeos all around Texas.  After college, Jody decided to chase his calf roping dreams and he quickly became a PRCA card holder.  He competed in pro rodeo for several years traveling from coast to coast.  While on his spring run in California, he met his future wife Kelli.  He eventually moved to California and wrapped up his tie down roping career with a California Circuit finals qualification in 2003.  At that point, he shifted his focus back to his other passion and set out to obtain his PRCA Announcer card and pursue announcing as a full time profession.  Jody and Kelli married in 2005 and have been blessed to be able to build their lives traveling to rodeos together ever since. Jody has been selected 3 times by the PRCA to announce the National Finals Steer Roping and two times as the Ram National Circuit Finals Announcer.  He has also announced hundreds of other great rodeos across the United States and Canada.

Lynden PRCA Rodeo Fashion Saddle up! It’s time for the 14th annual Lynden PRCA Rodeo. This exciting event keeps everyone on their toes and allows you to show off YOUR rodeo fashion. Need a little help deciding what to wear? Dakota Magden, and Selena Burgess have some excellent advice! Magden (picture right with her horse Baloo) lives in Oregon where she stays busy: “…I run my family’s ranch and we live off of 100 acres,” she explained “…and I have a horse boarding facility on the ranch”. Barrel Racing in ‘Wild West Events’ rodeos, she knows a thing or two about rodeo fashion. Burgess is the Rodeo Coordinator for the Lynden PRCA Rodeo, and she too, knows the Rodeo scene well. TRENDING Like all fashion, rodeo fashion trends come and go. Magden explains that this year’s Rodeo fashion tends to embrace a throwback style. She says,

“…the old west look, like the old-school cowboy hats, like the top hats … those are really starting to be a trend now. Also with … high waisted pants like vintage Wranglers or vintage Rockies jeans, those are really popular now…” She also notes that “…cute booties…”, boots, and graphic tees are a hot item on the Rodeo Fashion Scene. Contrast this to ‘bling’ that has been popular in years past, Magden explains that “…old west and vintage and then a little bit of modern…” is the rodeo look now. But no outfit is complete without the finishing touches. Magden explained that necklaces are a big item, and that “…anything turquoise…” would work well in the rodeo fashion scene. Other accessories such as ‘Wild Rags’, a scarf-like rodeo accessory, and Navajo jewelry like ‘Squash Blossoms’ - a Navajo necklace - she says are fashionable as well. Burgess adds that “tooled leather” is a hot item right now. She explains, “…even the women’s sandals that they’re making now look like tooled leather, so [they] look almost like an old belt.” Denim is also trending now, as Burgess says, “…a lot of wide leg jeans are coming back… a lot of just denim in general, like denim on denim is coming back.” Burgess notes that fringe is big too. In other words, there are many trends taking the spotlight in the rodeo fashion scene.

THEIR STYLE Magden says she’s a fan of the ‘vintage’ style. Along with vintage high waisted Wranglers, she says:

“I like fringe a lot, so I’ll wear a fringe shirt with … a denim button up with the sleeves rolled up and then a pair of … snip toe cowboy boots and then I’ll spruce up my outfit with … either a choker necklace or a long turquoise necklace.” She also says that she likes to wear “…big earrings…” and “… a lot of rings…”. Similarly, one can spot Burgess embracing the style as she wears fringe earrings to top off her look. Taking their advice, one can put together their own rodeo look. Tips for Rodeo Fans: Ready to show off your style? Before you do, Magden has a few pieces of advice. “… you can never go wrong with … a pair of comfortable jeans and then… spruce up your jeans with a nice shirt”. This basic template allows room for mixing and matching. But when it comes down to it, confidence is key: “…the biggest thing is always make sure you wear something that you feel comfortable in…” Magden explains. Starting with these basics and adding a few of the many trending accessories will provide a look fit for a Rodeo Queen! Rodeo fans! We want to see YOUR rodeo fashion! Dress in your rodeo best, and join us August 14 and 15 at the Lynden PRCA Rodeo, Tuesday and Wednesday of the Northwest Washington Fair. By Kori Vander Veen

Health & Safety

When should I wash my hands?

What is the right way to wash my hands?

• If you haven’t washed your hands recently, or if your hands are dirty. • After being near animals, touching dirty surfaces, using the bathroom, playing outside, sneezing or coughing. • Before touching others or eating food.

• Use plenty of soap and water. • Get a good lather on your hands, covering both sides of your hands, your wrists, between your fingers and around your fingernails, where dirt is often trapped. • Wash your hands for 15 to 20 seconds, or about how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” two times through. • If you do not have soap and water around, use hand sanitizer. Rub your hands together as if you had soap and water on them.
