2019 NORTHWEST WASHINGTON FAIR PROGRAM / 3

Welcome TABLE OF CONTENTS

A Message from the Board of Directors Welcome to the 2019 Northwest Washington Fair; we’re delighted to have you with us as we make this summer one to truly remember forever. Whether you make your memories at one of our amazing Bank of the Pacific Grandstand performances, on thrilling carnival rides or in the heat of the Lynden Jr. Livestock Auction, you’re sure to enjoy this year’s fair. Our most noticeable change this year is the construction of the new Farm Pavilion, the future home of the Farming for Life Experience. This building has been made possible by the generosity of many individuals, and the exhibit will be brought to life through your support. If you haven’t taken a peek at what we’re up to, visit nwwafair.com for exciting updates on the exhibit that’s set to redefine agriculture in the Pacific Northwest, and to see how you can be part of this historic project. The Fair program is always one of my favorite reads throughout the year, as it’s full of schedules, entertainers, scholarship recipients, and so much more. Everything you need for a fun-filled fair experience! Everything you need to Remember this Summer Forever.

First Timers’ Guide If this is your first time at the Northwest Washington Fair, or it’s your first visit in a long time, here is some helpful info: Before you ride • Some rides have height requirements. Check to see which rides your kids are big enough for so you don’t waste time standing in lines for rides they can’t go on. • Some rides do not allow children in sandals, so dress them in sneakers. They’ll be more comfortable, anyway. • Save the Moo-wich for after the ride. To cool off • There’s plenty of shade near the Banner Bank Festival Stage; take a break and enjoy a snack and some tunes or comedy from one of many acts throughout the day. • Stroll through the cooler concrete-floored exhibits or Phillips 66 Dairy Education Center.

Parking • All street parking is free in Lynden. Plus, there are several parking lots surrounding the Fair where you can park all day for just a few dollars. Most paid parking benefits local non-profits or schools. • Consider parking downtown; visit the businesses there and then take the free shuttle bus to the fairgrounds. See page 4 for a shuttle map. • Ride WTA - Free Fare Week! Take the bus from Bellingham for free. See page 64 for details.

SEAN TAYLOR

Your two new best friends, in concert! Returning for their 2nd year. Led by Twin Brothers from Brazil on electric violin and ukulele, this charismatic duo draws influence from a wide range of iconic songs and genres to offer something for everyone. This live show is a hybrid mix of rock concert, dance party, audience interaction and humor to create an unforgettable entertainment experience.

Bringing Hi-fidelity entertainment that spans space and time comes DJ Know0ne to spin tunes from the Beat Farm to your ears. Come by and join the dance party every weeknight during fair week!

ALSO PERFORMING: HISPANIC BANDS What we have set out to achieve, we have accomplished together. From a large vision to a larger than life reality, the Farm Pavilion is finally here, and YOU get to see it this for the first time this year at the Northwest Washington Fair. The Farm Pavilion will house The Farming for Life Experience, an educational exhibit that will be open to the public year-round. Set to open in 2020, The Farming for Life Experience intends to educate the public about all aspects of the agricultural industry, from innovations in farming practices to the history of farming in Whatcom County and much more. However, this will only happen if we are able to raise 2 million dollars. If educating the public about where their food comes from is important to you, then this is the perfect opportunity to support the exhibit to help spread that message. You can help contribute to funding this project by visiting the Farm Pavilion during Fair week or call the Fair Office at 360-354-4111. This addition to the community will be beneficial for all who walk through the doors and it’s sure to provide many amazing experiences to all who are involved. Any contributions are greatly appreciated! Thank you! www.nwwafair.com

Penelope The Clown brings over 20 years of experience as a professional clown to events across North America. She's amazed Alaska, caused chuckles in California, warranted wails of laughter in Washington, and constantly causes a commotion of comedy at home in Canada. Watch for her as she juggles, paints faces, twists balloon animals, and solicits smiles from everyone she meets. FABLES OF THE WEST Get ready to ride with Slim & Curly, the biggest little cowboys in the Old West! When you come to the fair this year, you’re sure to get a ‘kick’ from the Fables Of The West gang and their trusty steeds as they head out on the trail. Often referred to as ‘the little cowboys on the little horses’, Slim & Curly have opened up concerts for artists including Lonestar and Kenny Chesney, and have sang onstage with Big & Rich (‘Save A Horse’) and even appeared on The Tonight Show. And just what is it these cowboys do? You’ll have to come and see their antics for yourself!

FAIR FOOD FINDER Pick up a Fair Food Finder at the Info Booth by the clock tower during Fair Week to find a complete list of all your favorite fair foods. This brochure will also tell you their location, so you know exactly were to go. It’s the perfect way to transform your fair day into a food festival fantasy! Abby Hayden

Kaiden Van Dalen

Abby Hayden, daughter of Bob and Michelle, graduated from Lynden Christian High School and plans to attend Washington State University this fall to study Animal Science. She plans to go on to veterinary school once she earns her bachelor’s degree. Abby started showing lambs when she was nine years old and was hooked. She has been involved in barrel racing and other horse gaming events over the years. Her most meaningful experiences have been serving as a junior high leader at her church and being part of mission trips to Guadalajara where she will be making her third trip this summer. She has volunteered at Kulshan Veterinary and works at Rover Stay Over.

Kaiden Van Dalen, son of Mike and Raelene, is a Lynden High School graduate who will begin his studies at Whatcom Community College with plans to transfer to Washington State University to study Plant Science. Kaiden has raised market hogs throughout high school showing at both the Lynden and Skagit County Fair. When wildfires destroyed livestock and farms in Eastern Washington, Kaiden sold a calf and donated the $7,000 in proceeds to the local FFA Chapters. In high school, he participated in football, track, and as a leader of the middle school Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He continues his work at Maberry Packing as a test plot breeder. When not working, you will find Kaiden hunting, fishing or working on his bowhunting skills.

Jill has competed in marketing, showing pigs, and landscaping with her FFA chapter. Her team recently took second at FFA State in Food Science and she placed first individually. Lynden PRCA Rodeo Roughstock Events Scores depend on a combination of both the cowboy’s and the animal’s performance. If the rider’s bull or horse doesn’t buck, but just walks placidly around the ring, the score will be much lower than if the animal is lively. A cowboy must stay aboard the animal for 8 seconds to even get a score; the remainder of the score depends on how well both rider and animal perform.

• Bareback Riding • Saddle Bronc Riding • Bull Riding Featuring Bullfighters: Matt Akers and Ryan Manning Pick-up men: Ricky Shannon and David Lewis

Lynden PRCA Rodeo Rodeo Announcer, Jody Carper Jody spent his first 30 years in Big Spring TX, and rodeo has been a part of his life since the beginning. He and his brother competed in all of the timed events in junior rodeo and high school rodeo.  Being a contestant wasn’t Jody’s only connection to rodeo.  He and his brother used to play “rodeo” at their house and Jody would always be the announcer.  It seemed natural for him and other noticed too.  In 1991, just out of high school, Jody was asked to announce the local high school rodeo.  That started him being hired to announce junior and amateur rodeos all around Texas.  After college, Jody decided to chase his calf roping dreams and he quickly became a PRCA card holder.  He competed in pro rodeo for several years traveling from coast to coast.  While on his spring run in California, he met his future wife Kelli.  He eventually moved to California and wrapped up his tie down roping career with a California Circuit finals qualification in 2003.  At that point, he shifted his focus back to his other passion and set out to obtain his PRCA Announcer card and pursue announcing as a full time profession.  Jody and Kelli married in 2005 and have been blessed to be able to build their lives traveling to rodeos together ever since. Jody has been selected 3 times by the PRCA to announce the National Finals Steer Roping and two times as the Ram National Circuit Finals Announcer.  He has also announced hundreds of other great rodeos across the United States and Canada.

Miss Lynden Rodeo 2019 Aimee Henderson is the 18-year-old daughter of James and Angela Henderson. She was born in Bellingham Washington and currently resides in Everson Washington with her parents and 3 brothers. She graduated from Lynden Academy with Honors in June. She also attended Running Start full time at Whatcom Community College. Her love for horses is what consumes her time and resources and she hopes to continue working with, riding and competing on horse for many years. Aimee is a Whatcom County grown Cowgirl and enjoys her time spent with family and friends. Aimee was lucky enough to start riding horses at the young age of 6. Being a part of 4-H, WAHSET and FFA has helped mold her into a confident and caring young woman. Aimee started out at the age of just three going to dance classes, art classes and choir. All of this while riding and competing in Western and English Riding. At the age of about 12, her love for everything else came to a halt when she discovered speed events. Nothing could replace her passion and love for horses. The exhilaration she experienced while turning a barrel or weaving through the poles was something that would forever shape who she is. Today Aimee enjoys competing on many platforms with her horse Dixie in gaming events. She is giving riding lessons to young girls in hopes of sharing her love for horses with them. Aimee has a love for people, community and horses, and she is super excited for her adventures as Miss Lynden Rodeo. She is ready to represent the Lynden PRCA Rodeo, for the 2019 season, through traveling, teaching and spreading her love for rodeo and the western way of life throughout Western Washington. The Farm Pavilion The smell of corndogs waft through the air. The beautiful sight of the midway lights at night. The sound of cow hooves walking through the barns, ready to be shown in the 4-H competition. The warm August air reminding you of simple summer times. The sweet taste of freshly baked mini donuts as they melt in your mouth. This is the week that we know and love. This is Fair week. Only now, there’s a new addition. The Fair is adding to your summer memories with the brand-new Farm Pavilion that you’ll see when you enter the main gate off Front Street. It will be hard to miss when you walk in! Having replaced barns and 4-H buildings that had experienced MANY fair memories in the past, it welcomes in a new chapter of education AND entertainment that will make lasting memories for people of all ages for years to come. The new Farm Pavilion, at 26,000 square-feet, will be dedicated to educating the public about agriculture and its importance in Whatcom County. This two-story building will reinforce an industry that is at the heart and soul of Whatcom County: agriculture. For Fair week, it will provide additional space to demonstrate 4-H exhibits, but more importantly, year-round it will continue to educate the community on the farming industry.

52 \ 2019 NORTHWEST WASHINGTON FAIR PROGRAM

Some of its features will include: ● Orientation Theater: Video - “Welcome to The Farming for Life Experience Presentation Theater”. ● Farm History: An area showing the history of farming. ● Advances Through Innovation & Science: An area demonstrating innovation and science in categories like, Plant and Soil Research, Robotics, and more! ● Farming for Life Wonderwall: Wall exhibits demonstrating different aspects of farming such as animals, lifestyle, farm tools, and more! ● And more! While the features listed above will not be available

during the 2019 Fair, we invite you to come and see the new Farm Pavilion during fair week. It will feature various 4-H exhibits as well as a brief demonstration of what is to come for the Farm Pavilion. We’re so excited for you to see this amazing new addition to the community. We’re sure it will add to your many Fair memories to help you remember this summer – and all the summers to come – forever!

Health & Safety

When should I wash my hands?

What is the right way to wash my hands?

• If you haven’t washed your hands recently, or if your hands are dirty. • After being near animals, touching dirty surfaces, using the bathroom, playing outside, sneezing or coughing. • Before touching others or eating food.

• Use plenty of soap and water. • Get a good lather on your hands, covering both sides of your hands, your wrists, between your fingers and around your fingernails, where dirt is often trapped. • Wash your hands for 15 to 20 seconds, or about how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” two times through. • If you do not have soap and water around, use hand sanitizer. Rub your hands together as if you had soap and water on them.
