History of The Chamber

The Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce began in 1912 as the Lynn Chamber of Commerce (LCC). The LCC was the brainchild of then prominent businessman Ralph S. Bauer who also helped form the Lynn Board of Trade which then morphed into the LCC. Bauer, who served as LCC president for several years, was a Massachusetts politician who served as the thirty eighth Mayor of Lynn. In addition, Bauer organized the Essex County Associated Boards of Trade, lead the fight against increased fares on the Bay State railway, he was “the big man” in the inauguration of the White Way system in Lynn which was created to mirror the “Great White Way of Broadway in New York City, made major improvements to the downtown business district and Bauer was responsible for creating Lynn Shore Drive – “considered one of the most scenic boulevards in all of America” for its time.

Like present day, the LCC membership was made up of big manufacturing and the smaller family-owned businesses.

History echoes today’s issues as transportation, revenue taxes, permitting, signage, hours of operation and a “call for cooperation” were all issues of the day.

In the mid 1960’s the Lynn Chamber of Commerce changed its name to the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC).

At that time the LCC was expanding its business membership into the communities of Lynnfield, Nahant and Swampscott and wanted to change its name to reflect the “area” and members which it serves.

In 2019, the chamber became the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce, in order to reflect a more regional presence; including Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, Swampscott, and the surrounding areas.

The City of Lynn has a number of potential opportunities for you to expand, relocate, or start a new business. The Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce is here to help and support you in all of your business endeavors.

The COVID-19 pandemic has truly been an unprecedented challenge for our community, especially for our local businesses. I would like to thank all of you for all of your efforts during this pandemic to comply with state regulations to look out for the community’s’ health and reducing COVID-19 spread. While this past year has not been easy, we are optimistic for the future of the City of Lynn. Before this pandemic the city has attracted more investors and broken ground on a number of new mixed-use developments and a number of new businesses have opened despite the pandemic.

We continue to look for opportunities for investments in development, multi-modal transportation and tourism. Lynn offers residents and business owners a vibrant downtown experience with many culturally diverse restaurants and a transformed arts and culture scene through various public arts projects and programming. We are looking forward to the final construction of the Northern Strand Community Path this year and working together to fully realize our recently updated Waterfront, Open Space, and Municipal Harbor Masterplans.

Once this pandemic is behind us, you will see that Lynn’s future is brighter than ever before. This is a city that embraces its diversity as a strength of our community and is uniquely positioned to attract new business as the gateway of Essex County and the North Shore, with promising waterfront development plans in place.

Lynnfield A MESSAGE FROM LYNNFIELD: While the Town of Lynnfield is well known as one of the best places to live in New England, the same factors that have made it a premier residential community have also made it one of the best places in the region to own and operate a business.

First and foremost among these factors is a strong municipal government that values its growing business community. A volunteer-driven town government is staffed by professionals who have made working with businesses a priority, by streamlining government permitting processes and keeping commercial tax rates low through efficient and prudent spending policies.

The Town of Lynnfield’s commercial sector has grown significantly in recent years, chiefly due to the establishment of the MarketStreet lifestyle center, which combines a thriving retail center with office space and residences. Nahant A MESSAGE FROM NAHANT: Nahant is blessed with historical properties, beautiful beaches, rocky coasts, and scenic vistas. It is an exciting time for our community. We are focusing our efforts on climate change, improving aging infrastructure and the financial health of our government.

The next generation of leaders are getting involved in appointed and elected positions to help integrate the modern era of science and technology for posterity. We have an active arts and music scene and a number of recreational groups. Our Council on Aging and our Veteran services are leaders across the Commonwealth within their respective groups.

Nahant has a long and rich history of being made up of community groups and diverse individuals who share a common ground and strong commitment to our Town. Groups such as SWIM (Safer Water in Massachusetts), “01908”, the Veterans Association, and Council on Aging are just a few of them. The Town of Nahant values its relationship with the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce for their support of our community groups.

Although we have a small commercial base, our businesses are growing because of their involvement with the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce. Tides Restaurant, Oceanview of Nahant, The Nahant Country Club, Bayside Function Hall, and Jesmond Nursing Home are our major businesses who are Chamber of Commerce members and all are thriving.

Saugus A MESSAGE FROM SAUGUS: The Town of Saugus is a family-friendly, historic neighborhood Town located along the north shore, ten miles north of Boston. First settled in 1629, Saugus is home to historic sites, top-tier public services, and a thriving business community.
