he Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce, representing Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant and Swampscott since 1912, is committed to developing and fostering a dynamic business environment by serving, protecting and promoting its members through valuable resources, government representation, marketing and networking opportunities.

The Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit 501 C (6), membership based business organization representing over 400 businesses in 100 different professions ranging from one-person operation to several thousand employees. A twenty-three member board of directors sets the policy for the organization.

The Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce encourages entrepreneurship, student and current workforce development, local and state legislative advocacy, promotion of the area, as well as networking and education events.

History Of The Chamber

T

he Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce began in 1912 as the Lynn Chamber of Commerce (LCC). The LCC was the brainchild of then prominent businessman Ralph S. Bauer who also helped form the Lynn Board of Trade which then morphed into the LCC. Bauer, who served as LCC president for several years, was a Massachusetts politician who served as the thirty eighth Mayor of Lynn. In addition, Bauer organized the Essex County Associated Boards of Trade, lead the fight against increased fares on the Bay State railway, he was “the big man” in the inauguration of the White Way system in Lynn which was created to mirror the “Great White Way of Broadway in New York City, made major improvements to the downtown business district and Bauer was responsible for creating Lynn Shore Drive – “considered one of the most scenic boulevards in all of America” for its time.

Like present day, the LCC membership was made up of big manufacturing and the smaller family-owned businesses.

History echoes today’s issues as transportation, revenue taxes, permitting, signage, hours of operation and a “call for cooperation” were all issues of the day.

In the mid 1990’s the Lynn Chamber of Commerce changed its name to the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC). At that time the LCC was expanding its business membership into the communities of Lynnfield, Nahant and Swampscott and wanted to change its name to reflect the “area” and members which it serves.

Welcome Message From Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy Thank you for your interest in doing business in Lynn!

We are excited to work with the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce to provide opportunities for businesses to relocate, renovate, expand or embark on a new venture in our city.

Lynn built itself as an industrial center, with shoe-making, tannery and electric industries fueling the city’s population and economic growth. Today, we’re seeing many of the former factories transformed into residential lofts and small business spaces. Arts and culture have been at the forefront of our revitalization efforts, and our downtown was named one of the first state-designated cultural districts by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. We have a vibrant entertainment scene with restaurants, theatre and exhibits for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.

When it comes to new business and development, Lynn offers a number of beneficial services. The Economic Development & Industrial Corp. (EDIC/Lynn) has an extensive array of loan programs available to both start-ups and existing businesses. As a participant in the Commonwealth’s Economic Development Incentive Program, we are also able to provide a 5-percent state tax credit for new construction and expansions.

Through the Inspectional Services Department, we have combined health, electrical and building in one central location. Recognizing that delays in permitting are costly to all concerned, the city strives to make this process as expedient as possible.

We are excited at the prospect of new development along our waterfront, which has long been a spectacular, yet underutilized asset. I hope you agree that Lynn’s future is bright, and that you will want to explore how you can be a part of it.

Lynnfield A Message from Lynnfield: The Town of Lynnfield works hard to foster a close relationship with the Lynn Chamber of Commerce and our local business community. We recognize the many contributions that a thriving business community makes -- contributions far beyond their impact on our tax base.

In addition to the many successful, longstanding businesses throughout the Town of Lynnfield, we have seen tremendous growth over the past several years with the addition of the development at the former Colonial Golf Course that is now known as Market Street. The Town worked closely with the developer to craft a plan that combined retail, office and residential uses surrounded by protected open space and a municipally owned nine-hole golf course, King Rail Reserve. This development has grown into one of the premier shopping and dining destinations in the Commonwealth.

Lynnfield is well aware of the vital contributions that a vibrant and engaged business community makes to the economic and social wellbeing of our Town. Businesses contribute time, resources and volunteers to help make a myriad of social events and community fundraisers a success. From sponsoring youth athletic teams, to purchasing advertising in high school athletic programs, to tree lightings, beautification efforts, public safety, education and our many charities. We know that we would not be able to accomplish the many things that we do without the participation and support of local businesses.

The Town is uniquely positioned on both Route 95 and Route 1 with easy access to public transportation and the City of Boston and is blessed with beautiful neighborhoods, outstanding public schools, municipal services and public safety. Nahant A Message from NAHANT: Nahant is blessed with beautiful beaches, rocky coasts, and scenic vistas. It is an exciting time for the Town. Our Johnson Elementary School has a new superintendent and principal. Northeastern Marine Science Center is expanding and offering programs to students and visitors from all over Massachusetts. We have an active arts and music scene and a number of recreational groups.

However, our biggest asset is our residents who make up our community groups. Nahant has a long and rich history of being made up of community groups and diverse individuals who share a common ground and strong commitment to our Town. Groups such as SWIM (Safer Waters in Massachusetts), “01908”, the Veterans Association, and Council on Aging are just a few of them. The Town of Nahant values its relationship with the Lynn Chamber of Commerce for their support of our community groups.

Their support of GLSS benefits our Council on Aging by providing services for our seniors such as health fairs, programs and free milk.

Although we have a small commercial base, our business are growing because of their involvement with the Lynn Chamber of Commerce. The Nahant Country Club, Tides Restaurant, Oceanview of Nahant, Bayside Function Hall, and Jesmond Nursing home are our major businesses who are Chamber of Commerce members and all thriving.

Vinnin Square has a long list of shopping options and destinations perfect for residents as well as visitors to the region. When coming into or leaving Swampscott through the commuter rail station, be sure to stop in for a bite to eat or one of the neighborhood shops.
