Each August, the Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record sales team reaches out to local businesses with an opportunity to participate in our Kids Design-An-Ad program and sponsor a 3rd, 4th or 5th grade classroom. At the same time, our team connects with local elementary schools to identify classrooms interested in participating. Once both lists are nalized, classrooms are paired with local businesses— and depending on numbers, sometimes a business even gets to work with more than one class!

By late September, each participating teacher receives a packet with all the details and their assigned business info. Students then spend about a month creating their own ads to represent that speci c business. Students are encouraged to create eye catching artwork, attention grabbing headlines and clear contact info and logos. When the artwork is nished, our sales team picks up the submissions and delivers them to the businesses, giving them about a week to choose their favorite ad and the one that best represents their company.

By the end of October, all businesses have returned their overall winner to the Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record. ese selections then compete for our “Best of Grade” and “Best Overall” contest. ere are always so many creative and fun ads- it’s so di cult to choose. Once winners are selected, we contact schools to make sure both student and teacher names are correct and that everything is accurate before printing the special publication—a fun and busy time for our team!

e nalized Kids Design-An-Ad publication is then included in the Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record the week before anksgiving, sharing the creativity and talent of local students with thousands of readers. It is our hope that you enjoy taking a look and that the students have learned a bit about our local businesses, newspapers and the e ectiveness of advertising.
