Girls flag football arrives for Lynden and Ferndale Zen Hill Sports Reporter
The high school winter athletics season welcomes a new sport for the first time since 1999 as the WIAA officially sanctioned girls flag football this past April. Lynden and Ferndale are the two North Whatcom County schools that added the sport. “Everybody’s super excited for the season to start,” Lynden head coach Mike Regis said. “It’s not all about winning and losing right now. We want to grow the sport.” Regis, who has coached Lynden’s C-team football squad for eight years, is assisted by Lynden’s head football coach Blake VanDalen. VanDalen ended his 20-year tenure with boys basketball to assist Regis in coaching the new sport. VanDalen’s daughter, Taylor VanderYacht, joins the Lions as an assistant
coach along with three seniors from the football team: Dani Bowler, Lofa Tigilau and Sully Petz. Girls flag football is the WIAA’s first newly sanctioned sport since 1999 when girls bowling was added. Washington is the 15th state to sanction flag football in a growing national effort to give girls the opportunity to play football. “A lot of the high school girls love the Friday night light atmosphere,” Regis said. “They’re getting to have their own version of Friday night lights and learning a new sport.” Since Lynden has no prior flag football experience, Regis and his staff are focused on nailing down the fundamentals. “It’s a matter of them getting used to knowing what a football practice looks like,” Regis said. “It’s simplified, but there’s still a lot of important details that we have to go through.” Since Lynden’s gym is three courts
wide (basketball courts are 50 feet in width), the team can practice indoors and simulate a full-length field, which for girls flag football is the width of a football field (160 feet). During contests, teams will play sideline to sideline and one gameday will feature two matchups. For instance, Lynden’s season-opener was Dec. 17 on the road at Everett Memorial Stadium where they played Everett at 4:30 p.m. and Cascade (Everett) at 5:30 p.m. Lynden is unable to host any home games due to the WIAA requiring turf fields to host games. The Lions’ will play their scheduled home games at Squalicum High School with their first double-header coming on Jan. 7 against Bellingham and Sehome. “Everybody loves to win, but I just want the girls to have a positive experience,” Regis said. “I want to hold them to a high standard, but it’s not all about winning and losing right now.”

3 The combined varsity and JV rosters feature 40 athletes. LC students who live in the Lynden School District are eligible to play for Lynden similar to tennis, wrestling and swimming. “We want to introduce this to as many girls as possible,” Regis said. “We really wanted to open it up to everybody in Lynden to have this.” Lynden’s practices look like what you’d see during football season. Players run flag pulling drills, practice routes and learn how to organize themselves as a team once gameday comes. Girls flag football has seven players on the field for each team. There’s no offensive line except for a snapper, so every player needs to learn how to catch the ball. Ferndale enters its second year of flag football after playing an inaugural sixgame non-WIAA schedule last spring against Bellingham-area schools. This will be the Golden Eagles’ first official season, but their prior experience will be an early advantage as half of the roster played last year. “You’re not starting at all the little nuances of the game,” Ferndale head coach Donny Hennigs said. “We’re still pretty young. We’ve got lots of freshmen and sophomores, so we’ll see. I’m excited for the season.” Hennigs has been a football coach at Ferndale for 23 years and has also coached baseball. Hennigs is assisted by Britney Arredondo and Zach Oliver. Ferndale is able to host games on its turf field and the season-opener was on Dec. 17. The Golden Eagles are headed into the season with a higher level of competition compared to last season. “Last year, we kind of treated it as like an intra-

mural sport because it was the first time,” Hennigs said. “With it being a WIAA sport and having playoffs, it puts it on even keel with the other sports.” The WIAA has released a playoff schedule beginning Feb. 7 where the opening rounds and quarterfinals will be hosted at the closest approved site to the top four seeds, which is the same as the state baseball format. The state semifinals and championship will be at Federal Way Memorial Stadium from Feb. 13–14. There hasn’t been an official decision on how teams qualify for state. It will either be based on league standings or a district tournament.
For Lynden, one 2A team from the Northwest Conference, which includes all three Bellingham high schools and Lakewood, will advance to a combined 1A and 2A state tournament. Ferndale will look to earn one of two 3A berths into the 3A state tournament out of its district. As a sport, flag football is very different from regular football. “The only thing that bears resemblance to football is the actual ball that you use,” Hennigs said. “There’s very little contact. There’s no kicking involved. There are no fumbles.” The fundamentals of passing, catching and running
are similar, but the game is played in a fast-paced setting. “It’s like watching threeon-three basketball,” Hennigs said. “It’s got an arena football feel to it. Speed is definitely a key to the game.” The field is 50-yards long and 30-yards wide with 10yard end zones. The field is split into three zones and first downs are earned 17 yards from each end zone. Drives begin on the fiveyard line and teams have four downs to advance to the next zone. The game is running clock with two 20 minute halves that include stoppages during the last two minutes of each half.
A touchdown is six points with an automatic PAT of one point. Teams can attempt a two-point conversion from 10-yards out or a three-point conversion from 17 yards away. Overtime is played untimed with teams alternating PAT attempts with the option to go for one point from five yards out. Most of the state is entering the season inexperienced, so 1A and 2A schools will compete against one another regardless of classification in the postseason while 3A and 4A schools have separate tournaments. -- Contact Zen Hill at sports@ lyndentribune.com
