Outstanding academic results –the best in ten years across Matura and IB

As we reflect on the 2024/2025 academic year at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, I am filled with immense pride in our students’ achievements and the collective efforts of our dedicated community.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

This year, our graduating students achieved their best academic results in both the Swiss Matura and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in the past decade. Their hard work and commitment have been rewarded with offers from prestigious universities worldwide, including Oxford, Harvard, ETH Zürich, Columbia, IE Madrid, Bocconi, and many other outstanding institutions. Our 78 graduates go forth prepared to make their impact on our world, fortified by the life-long friendships that our school develops, and the confidence to embrace challenge as opportunity.

Beyond academics, our students have demonstrated exceptional character and teamwork in the sporting life for which our school has such a tradition. Our students celebrated numerous victories in SGIS and BMM

competitions, across all team sports, and their love for competition was seen in the very high participation rates in their international sports tours for Cricket (Italy), Fives (England), and Football (Greece). These accomplishments reflect the spirit and determination that define our community.

LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS

In April we welcomed Alexandra Conchard as the new Head of the International Section, succeeding Jackie Adams. Alexandra, a Swiss national and former longserving principal at the International School of Geneva, where the International Baccalaureate was founded, brings great experience in developing outstanding international education. Her five-month handover period with Jackie Adams was highly successful, ensuring a smooth transition and further enhancement of our teaching and learning.

Additionally, we were delighted to have Valerie Scullion join us as the Head of Marketing and Admissions in February. With over two decades of experience leading admissions and marketing in boarding schools, including eight years most recently at Aiglon College, Valerie is committed to building closer connections between our school and parents and alumni. In order to strengthen those relationships, if you are interested in serving as a regional ambassador for our school, to share your experience with potential future Lyceum Alpinum families, she would be delighted to hear from you.

Die besten akademischen Ergebnisse der letzten zehn Jahre – in Matura und IB

Mit Blick auf das Schuljahr 2024/2025 am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz erfüllt mich tiefer Stolz auf die Leistungen unserer Schülerinnen und Schüler und auf die gemeinsamen Bestrebungen unserer einzigartigen Schulgemeinschaft.

AKADEMISCHE EXZELLENZ

In diesem Schuljahr erzielten unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler die besten akademischen Ergebnisse der vergangenen zehn Jahre, sowohl im Rahmen der Schweizer Matura als auch des International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programmes. Ihre harte Arbeit und ihre Ausdauer wurden mit Studienplatzangeboten an weltweit renommierten Universitäten belohnt, darunter Oxford, Harvard, ETH Zürich, Columbia, IE Madrid, Bocconi und viele weitere herausragende Institutionen. Unsere 78 Absolventinnen und Absolventen treten nun bestens vorbereitet in die Welt hinaus – getragen von den lebenslangen Freundschaften, die unsere Schule ermöglicht, sowie von der Fähigkeit, Herausforderungen als Chancen zu nutzen.

«SPIRIT OF ZUOZ»

Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler haben nicht nur auf akademischer Ebene überzeugt. Mit Charakterstärke und Teamgeist haben sie sich auch im sportlichen Bereich, der seit jeher zu unserem Schulleben dazugehört, bewiesen. Sie erzielten zahlreiche Erfolge in SGIS- und BMM-Wettbewerben in allen Mannschaftssportarten. Darüber hinaus reflektierte die hohe Beteiligung an den internationalen Reisen in den Sportarten Cricket (Italien), Fives (England) und Fussball (Griechenland) die Begeisterung unserer Schülerinnen und Schüler für Wettkämpfe. Diese Leistungen spiegeln die geistige Haltung und die Entschlossenheit wider, die unsere Gemeinschaft prägen.

FÜHRUNGSWECHSEL

Im April durften wir Alexandra Conchard als neue Leiterin des internationalen Bereiches willkommen heissen. Sie trat damit die Nachfolge von Jackie Adams an. Alexandra ist

Schweizer Staatsbürgerin und war langjährige Schulleiterin der International School of Geneva – jener Schule, an der das International Baccalaureate gegründet wurde. Sie bringt umfassende Erfahrung in der Entwicklung exzellenter internationaler Bildung mit. Die fünfmonatige Übergabe durch Jackie Adams verlief äusserst erfolgreich und ermöglichte einen nahtlosen Übergang sowie eine weitere Stärkung des Lehrens und Lernens an unserer Schule.

Ebenfalls freuen wir uns sehr, dass Valerie Scullion seit Februar als Leiterin der Admissions- und Marketing-Abteilung Teil unseres Teams ist. Sie verfügt über mehr als zwanzig Jahre Erfahrung in den Bereichen Aufnahme und Marketing an Internaten, von denen sie die letzten acht Jahre am Aiglon College verbrachte. Valerie setzt sich mit grossem Engagement dafür ein, die Verbindung zwischen Schule, Eltern und Alumni weiter zu vertiefen. Wenn Sie sich vorstellen können, als regionale Botschafterin oder Botschafter unsere Schule potenziellen künftigen Familien näherzubringen, freut Valerie sich, von Ihnen zu hören.

Abschlüsse, Applaus und Aufbruch

Ein Tag voller Stimmen und Geschichten

Auf dem Campus liegt Spannung in der Luft, ein Gefühl von Stolz und Abenteuer. Die Maturandinnen und Maturanden und die Absolventinnen und Absolventen des International Baccalaureate stehen an diesem Nachmittag im Mittelpunkt. Doch erst die Stimmen von Rektor, Schulleitung, Lehrpersonen, Schülerinnen und Schülern und Ehemaligen machen diesen Tag besonders.

«Schaut euch um», sagt der Rektor Oliver Hartwright, «die Gesichter neben euch sind mehr als Mitschülerinnen und Mitschüler, ihr seid eine Gemeinschaft, die sich gegenseitig getragen hat.»

Lachen breitet sich aus, als er den legendären Crosslauf als «Rite of Passage» erwähnt; für manche mehr Überlebenstraining als Sport. Die Freude über das Erreichte ist spürbar. Familien, Freunde und Lehrpersonen werden für ihren grossen Beistand und ihr Mitwirken mit Applaus gewürdigt.

Weiter erzählt er, wie er am Morgen die Kindergartenfeier seines Sohnes erlebt hat … «Die Jahre vergehen im Flug», sagt Hartwright und gibt den Abschlussklassen mit auf den Weg: «Seid optimistisch, seid ambitioniert, seid gesund.» Für ihn ist das mehr als ein Ratschlag. Optimismus bedeutet Hoffnung mit Disziplin. Ambition braucht Sinn, und alles steht auf dem Fundament der Gesundheit.

Prorektor Christian Grütter erinnert daran, dass er gemeinsam mit dem abgehenden Jahrgang vor sechs Jahren am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz begonnen hat. Schon früh habe die Lehrerschaft die besonderen Qualitäten dieser Klasse erkannt – leistungsstark, sportlich, sozial, mit echtem Teamgeist.

Die Herausforderungen der Pandemiezeit, in der die Schülerinnen und Schüler früh Selbstständigkeit und Flexibilität im Online-Lernen zeigen mussten, bleiben ihm besonders in Erinnerung. «Waren das noch Zeiten!», sagt Grütter und weiter: «Manchmal führen Umwege zu Erkenntnissen, die später zählen.» Er bestärkt die Abschlussklassen darin, dem eigenen Weg zu folgen, selbst wenn er nicht immer gerade verläuft.

Schnee, Wind und lebendige Bergmomente – diese Bilder lässt Geografielehrerin Tiziana Gees aufleben. Sie nimmt die Abschlussklassen mit auf «Hectors Reise oder die Suche nach dem Glück» und fasst ihre wichtigsten Lektionen für das Leben zusammen: Glück liegt im Wandern in unbekannten Bergen, in lebendigen Momenten, im Zusammensein

mit Menschen, die man mag, und in erfüllender Arbeit. Sie rät, sich nicht durch Vergleiche das Glück nehmen zu lassen und auch Umwege als Chancen zu begreifen. «Feiert das Leben, feiert eure Freundschaften und helft mit, dass auch andere einen Grund zum Feiern haben.»

«Es war nicht eine grosse Geste, sondern ein Moment der Ehrlichkeit», erinnert sich Jackie Adams von der internationalen Abteilung. Genau dieser Augenblick veränderte etwas. Ein Schüler entscheidet sich, nicht zu hadern, sondern an sich zu arbeiten. Von da an wuchs der Jahrgang enger zusammen und übernahm Verantwortung füreinander. Plötzlich zählen nicht mehr nur die Noten, sondern auch wie die Absolventinnen und Absolventen sich gegenseitig unterstützen und gemeinsam wachsen. Diese stille Reife ist für Adams der wahre Grund zum Feiern.

Englischlehrer Stephen Rix sorgt für Heiterkeit, als er Alexa, Siri und ChatGPT zu Wort kommen lässt. Er erinnert daran, dass es nicht um perfekte Ergebnisse geht, sondern um das, was alle gemeinsam erlebt und an Entwicklung gezeigt haben. «Das hier ist nicht das Ende von irgendetwas, sondern der Anfang von allem.»

Die Verleihung der Colour Awards macht deutlich, wie sehr Haltung und Gemeinschaft das Schulleben prägen. Denn hier werden diejenigen gewürdigt, die den Zusammenhalt der Schule besonders verkörpern. «Die Ausgezeichneten spiegeln die Gemeinschaft wider, die Zuoz prägt», betont Gill Holland, Leiterin des Boarding.

Nicole Kollars, Präsidentin des Zuoz Club, ermutigt die Absolventinnen und Absolventen, die Tradition fortzusetzen. Das Netzwerk umfasst inzwischen mehr als 3000 Alumni, und die Verbindung nach Zuoz steht allen offen, die zur Gemeinschaft gehören.

Durch das vielseitige und feierliche Programm führte Alumni Philipp Bächstädt. Ein sommerliches Gewitter am späten Nachmittag konnte der festlichen Stimmung nichts anhaben.

Beim anschliessenden Apéro wurde mit Freude auf die Abschlüsse angestossen und überall war der «Spirit of Zuoz» spürbar: Teamgeist, Optimismus und Mut. Heute wird gefeiert, morgen beginnt das nächste Abenteuer.

Graduation, Applause, and New Beginnings

A day full of voices and stories

There’s a buzz in the air on campus, a mix of pride and anticipation. This afternoon belongs to the graduates: those who have completed the Matura or the International Baccalaureate. But it is the voices of the headmaster, school leadership, teachers, students, and alumni that truly make this day special.

“Look around you,” says Headmaster Oliver Hartwright. “The faces beside you are more than classmates, you are a community that has supported one another.”

Laughter ripples through the hall as he mentions the legendary cross-country run as a “rite of passage” for some, more survival training than sport. The joy of achievement is tangible. Families, friends, and teachers are warmly applauded for their support and involvement.

He shares a personal moment from earlier that day, attending his own son’s kindergarten celebration. “The years fly by,” he reflects, offering the graduating classes this message: “Be optimistic, be ambitious, be healthy.” For him, this is more than just advice. Optimism means disciplined hope. Ambition must have purpose. And everything rests on a foundation of health.

Deputy Head Christian Grütter recalls starting at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz six years ago alongside the graduating cohort. Even then, the teachers recognized something special in this group – high-achieving, athletic, socially engaged, and full of team spirit.

He remembers in particular the challenges of the pandemic years, when students had to quickly demonstrate independence and adaptability during online learning.

“Those were the days,” he says with a smile. “Sometimes, detours lead to insights that matter the most later.” He encourages the graduates to follow their own paths, even when those paths do not follow a straight line.

Geography teacher Tiziana Gees conjures up images of snow, wind, and vivid moments in the mountains. She invites the graduating classes to reflect through “Hector’s Journey or the Search for Happiness,” summarizing her own life lessons: happiness is found while hiking in unfamiliar mountains, in vibrant moments, with people you care about, and in meaningful work. She advises to not let comparisons

be the thief of joy and to embrace detours as opportunities. “Celebrate life. Celebrate your friendships. And help others find something to celebrate too.”

“It wasn’t a grand gesture, but a moment of honesty,” recalls Jackie Adams from the international section. A small moment that changed something. A student chose not to dwell on difficulties, but rather to focus on what they themselves could do to improve. From that point on, the cohort grew closer, taking responsibility for one another. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about grades, but about how they supported each other and grew together. For Adams, that quiet maturity is the true reason to celebrate.

English teacher Stephen Rix causes amusement by letting Alexa, Siri, and ChatGPT say a few words. He reminds everyone that it’s not about perfect results – it’s about what has been experienced and how everyone has grown together. “This isn’t the end of something,” he says, “it’s the beginning of everything.”

The awarding of the Colour Awards highlights just how much attitude and community shape school life. These honors go to students who embody the spirit of Zuoz and strengthen the school’s sense of togetherness. “The recipients of the awards reflect the community that defines Zuoz,” says Gill Holland, Head of Boarding.

Nicole Kollars, president of the Zuoz Club, encourages graduates to carry the tradition forward. The alumni network now includes over 3,000 members and the connection to Zuoz is open to all who have been part of the community.

Alumnus Philipp Bächstädt guided the audience through the varied, celebratory programme. Even a summer thunderstorm in the late afternoon couldn’t dampen the mood.

At the reception that followed, glasses were raised in joy to mark the graduates’ achievements. And everywhere, the “Spirit of Zuoz” could be felt: team spirit, optimism, and courage. Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, the next adventure begins.

Erfolge und Abschlüsse im Mittelpunkt

Mit der Abschlusszeremonie am 21. Juni 2025 endete für die Maturaklasse und die IBSchülerinnen und -Schüler des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz ein wichtiger Lebensabschnitt.

Rund 450 Gäste, darunter Familien, Freunde und Lehrpersonen, waren vor Ort, um die 28 Maturandinnen und Maturanden sowie 50 Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Internationalen Abteilung bei der Diplomübergabe zu begleiten.

SCHWEIZER MATURA

In der Maturaklasse wurden drei Schülerinnen und Schüler besonders geehrt. Anastasia Sala aus St. Moritz erreichte mit einer Durchschnittsnote von 5.85 den Spitzenplatz. Fadri Niculin Schucan aus Zuoz folgte mit 5.77, auf dem dritten Rang lag Léa Flurina Weida aus Silvaplana mit 5.69. Mehrere Maturaarbeiten wurden mit der Höchstnote 6 bewertet. Besonders ausgezeichnet wurden die Arbeiten von Anastasia Sala, Fadri Niculin Schucan und Andrea Mistral Zuccarini. Die ausgezeichneten Arbeiten zeigten inhaltliche Tiefe und Methodensicherheit und spiegeln das breite Interessensspektrum der Klasse wider.

PRÄMIERTE MATURAARBEITEN

Anastasia Sala – Beste Maturaarbeit 1 Ewiges Schweigen (?) Der Wandel des Vatikans im Umgang mit sexuellen Missbrauchsfällen

Die Arbeit bietet eine beeindruckende Analyse eines schwierigen und hochsensiblen Themas. Anastasia Sala beleuchtet die Entwicklung des Vatikans im Umgang mit Missbrauchsfällen und analysiert zentrale Dokumente aus der älteren und neueren Geschichte auf sprachlicher und inhaltlicher Ebene. Die Arbeit zeigt eine aussergewöhnliche Tiefe und Verknüpfung von historischen, ethischen und gesellschaftlichen Aspekten. Besonders gelungen ist die Einordnung der Veränderungen in einen breiteren Kontext, der sowohl innerkirchliche als auch gesellschaftliche Dynamiken berücksichtigt. Die Reflexion über die Konsequenzen für die Betroffenen und die Glaubwürdigkeit der Institution unterstreicht die gesellschaftliche Relevanz der Arbeit. Die Argumentation ist schlüssig, die Quellenarbeit vorbildlich, und die Schlussfolgerungen überzeugend.

Fadri Schucan – Beste Maturaarbeit 2

Strafen und Massnahmen im Schweizer Jugendstrafrecht und ihre Wirkung auf Jugendliche

Fadri setzt sich in seiner sehr umfangreichen Arbeit intensiv mit Strafen und Massnahmen im Jugendstrafrecht auseinander. Im ersten Teil beschreibt er Massnahmen und Strafen. Im empirischen Teil führt er Interviews mit Fachpersonen sowie jugendlichen Straftätern und evaluiert in einer Umfrage unter Jugendlichen, zwischen 13 und 19 Jahren, mit verschiedenen fiktiven Fallbeispielen die möglichen Konsequenzen unterschiedlicher Straftaten. Die Auswertung der erhobenen Daten erfolgt in ansprechenden Diagrammen und flüssig lesbarem, korrekt verfassten Text, methodisch geht Fadri in allen Teilen korrekt vor. Der Umfang der vorgelegten Arbeit geht weit über den einer gewöhnlichen Maturaarbeit hinaus.

Mistral Zuccarini – Beste Maturaarbeit 3 Coding and solving a logic game

Mistral hat mit seiner beeindruckenden Maturaarbeit gezeigt, dass das strategische Lösen eines logischen Spiels eine äusserst anspruchsvolle Aufgabe sein kann. Dabei hat er nicht nur ein eigenes, selbst entwickeltes Spiel namens «Dot» programmiert und der Allgemeinheit online zur Verfügung gestellt, sondern auch äusserst anspruchsvolle Lösungsstrategien gesucht und diese in verschiedenen Programmiersprachen wie C und Maschinensprache (ARM64 Assembly) implementiert. Innerhalb des vergangenen Jahres hat Mistral durch seine intensive und effektive Programmierarbeit zahlreiche Programme entwickelt – nicht nur, um das Spiel zu ermöglichen, sondern auch, um neue Levels automatisiert zu erstellen und optimale Lösungen für die 140 Levels zu finden. Die Arbeit zeigt sowohl eine sehr tiefe Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema als auch eine vielseitige Herangehensweise, die Mathematik, Programmierung und Spielentwicklung verbindet. Mistrals Maturaarbeit hebt sich durch ihre Originalität, Eigenleistung, kreatives Denken und klare Ziele hervor: ein logisches Spiel zu entwickeln, zu analysieren und automatisierte Lösungen dafür zu implementieren.

INTERNATIONALE ABTEILUNG

Die Internationale Abteilung erzielte in diesem Jahr herausragende Ergebnisse: Der Anteil bestandener Prüfungen lag bei beeindruckenden 96 % und die durchschnittlich erzielte Punktzahl im IB Diploma Programme betraf 31 Punkte. Die beste Leistung erzielte Ruiran Cai (Serena) mit der Höchstpunktzahl von 40 Punkten, dicht gefolgt von Xiaoman Lin (Maggie) und Yaxin Han (Olivia), die jeweils 39 Punkte erzielten, ein eindrucksvoller Beweis für ihre Hingabe und akademische Exzellenz.

Mit Stolz erwähnen möchten wir auch die Schülerinnen und Schüler, die mit intensiver Recherche und intellektueller Neugier herausragende Extended Essays verfassten: Eric Schlumberger mit seiner fundierten Analyse «Wie verstärken oder hinterfragen Disneys Aladdin (1992) und Vaiana (2016) postkoloniale Stereotype?», Henry Smith mit seiner detaillierten historischen Untersuchung «Welche Faktoren führten zwischen 1815 und 1848 zum Aufschwung der Schiffbauindustrie in Sunderland?» und Leyla Solakoglu mit ihrer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit «Wie beeinflussen genetische Optimierung und selektive Zuchtmethoden bei Milchkühen den Milchertrag und die Verbrauchervorlieben für Milchprodukte?».

Diese herausragenden Leistungen reflektieren das grosse Engagement und die akademische Präzision unserer Schülerinnen und Schüler im internationalen Programm.

Ein weiterer besonderer Moment war die Verleihung der Colour Awards im Anschluss an die Diplomübergabe, bevor alle Absolventinnen und Absolventen gemeinsam mit ihren Familien zum Apéro im Speisesaal des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz eingeladen wurden.

Successes and Graduation Take Centre Stage

With the graduation ceremony on 21 June 2025, an important chapter came to an end for both the Swiss Matura and International Baccalaureate students at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz.

Around 450 guests including families, friends, and teachers were in attendance to celebrate the graduation of 28 Matura students and 50 IB graduates.

SWISS MATURA

Three students from the Matura class received special recognition. Anastasia Sala from St. Moritz earned the top spot with a grade average of 5.85. Fadri Niculin Schucan from Zuoz followed with 5.77, and in third place was Léa Flurina Weida from Silvaplana with 5.69. Several Matura theses received the highest mark of 6. Particularly outstanding were the works of Anastasia Sala, Fadri Niculin Schucan, and Andrea Mistral Zuccarini whose theses demonstrated depth of content and methodological precision, and reflected the broad range of interests within the class.

Anastasia Sala – Best Matura Thesis 1 Eternal Silence (?) – The Vatican’s Changing Approach to Cases of Sexual Abuse

This thesis presents an impressive analysis of a difficult and highly sensitive topic. Anastasia Sala examines the evolution of the Vatican’s handling of abuse cases and analyzes key documents from both older and more recent history on both a linguistic and content level. The work demonstrates exceptional depth and a sophisticated connection between historical, ethical, and societal dimensions. Particularly well executed is her contextualization of these changes within a broader framework that considers both internal Church dynamics and wider societal factors. Her reflection on the consequences for victims and the credibility of the institution underscores the social relevance of the topic. The argumentation is coherent, the use of sources exemplary, and the conclusions compelling.

Fadri Niculin Schucan – Best Matura Thesis 2 Punishments and Measures in Swiss Juvenile Criminal Law and Their Impact on Young People

In his extensive thesis, Fadri offers an in-depth examination of penalties and measures in Swiss juvenile law. The first part outlines legal frameworks, while the empirical section includes interviews with professionals and young offenders. In addition, he conducted a survey among 13 to 19 year olds using fictional case studies to assess perceptions of

the consequences of different offences. His analysis of the collected data is presented in clear charts and well-written, grammatically sound text. Fadri applies methodologically correct practices throughout. The scope and depth of his thesis go well beyond the expectations of a typical Matura project.

Mistral Zuccarini – Best Matura Thesis 3 Coding and Solving a Logic Game

Mistral’s remarkable thesis shows how solving a logicbased game can be a highly complex intellectual challenge. He not only developed and programmed an original game called “Dot”, making it publicly available online, but also designed and implemented sophisticated solving strategies in multiple programming languages including C and ARM64 Assembly. Over the past year, he has created numerous programs – not only to run the game itself but also to automatically generate new levels and find optimal solutions for all 140 levels. His thesis demonstrates deep engagement with the topic and an interdisciplinary approach combining mathematics, programming, and game development. Mistral’s work stands out for its originality, independence, creative thinking, and clarity of purpose: to develop, analyze, and automate solutions for a logic game.

INTERNATIONAL SECTION

The International Department delivered exceptional results this year, with an impressive 96% pass rate and an average score of 31 points in the IB Diploma Programme. Among the top performers, Cai Ruiran (Serena) achieved the highest score with 40 points, closely followed by Lin Xiaoman (Maggie) and Han Yaxin (Olivia), both earning 39 points. A testament to their dedication and academic excellence.

We are also proud to highlight students who produced outstanding Extended Essays, reflecting deep research and intellectual curiosity: Eric Schlumberger, for his insightful analysis “How do Disney’s Aladdin (1992) and Moana (2016) reinforce or challenge post-colonial stereotyping?” Henry Smith, for his detailed historical investigation “What factors led to the growth of Sunderland’s shipbuilding industry between 1815 and 1848?” and Leyla Solakoglu, for her scientific exploration “How do genetic improvements and selective breeding techniques in dairy cattle influence milk yield and consumer preference for dairy products?”

These remarkable achievements underscore the commitment and academic rigour of our students in the international programme.

Another special moment was the presentation of the Colour Awards, which followed the diploma ceremony, before all graduates and their families were invited to the dining hall in the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz dining hall.

The 2025 Colour Awards celebrate outstanding students at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. These awards recognise exceptional effort in sports, academics, and community involvement. The recipients reflect the true spirit of Zuoz.

We are pleased to present the Colour Awards for the graduating class 2025. Colours are awarded in recognition of exceptional attitude, effort and achievement. They reflect a student’s awareness of the values inherent in the Spirit of Zuoz. House colours are awarded to students who have excelled in sports, academics, theatre, their house, or the school community at large.

Our first School Colour is awarded to a student who truly embodies the Spirit of Zuoz, someone who consistently gives his best, supports others, and leads with integrity. Over the years, he has played a central role in school life, particularly through football and volleyball, and more recently as School Captain. Elected by his peers, his leadership has been marked by calm, maturity, and a deep sense of responsibility. He has brought clarity and strength to every conversation and always acted in the community’s best interest. It is with great pleasure that I award this School Colour to Martin Ban.

This School Colour is awarded to a student who has shown quiet strength, consistency, and responsibility throughout his time at the Lyceum. He has contributed to school life across many sports, football, cricket, volleyball, and basketball, and was this year’s recipient of the Gordon Spencer Award. His calmness, maturity, and commitment to growth have stood out, especially as these were qualities he set out to develop. He leads by example, setting high

standards for himself and raising the standards of others. I’m very pleased to award this School Colour to Konstantin Waltenberg.

Our next School Colour goes to a student who has made an outstanding impact through her leadership, service, and sporting achievements. As School Captain and a key member of the Student Organisation, she has led with care, clarity, and vision. On the pitch, she captained the football team to a second treble and holds the school record for the most tournament wins. She balances all aspects of school life with calm focus and purpose. I am proud to award this School Colour to Adalena Walhoff.

Our final School Colour goes to a student whose leadership, especially as Grosshaus Captain, has been calm, steady, and deeply respected. He has made major contributions across sports, volleyball, basketball, football, and cricket, and captained teams to notable success, including winning the Gordon Spencer Award in 2024. Robin leads quietly but powerfully, always by example, and is genuinely admired by those around him. Erinnerst du dich noch an deine eigene Graduation am Lyceum?

Als Schüler baut man sich ungewollt ein gewisses Image auf. Ich war eher als Streber angesehen, als Cricket-Fanatiker mit komischen Kappen, und ich hatte eine ganz fiese Zahnspange. Als ich mein IB abgeschlossen hatte, ging ich direkt nach London, um dort Cricket zu spielen und mein erstes Geld zu verdienen. Dort war ich umgeben von Menschen, die ganz anders tickten und mich auch ganz anders wahrnahmen. Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass ein Kieferorthopäde mich dort auch meiner Zahnspange entledigt hatte. Jedenfalls kam ich mit einem komplett neuen Selbstbewusstsein zum Lyceum zurück und strahlte wie ein Honigkuchenpferd, als ich mein Zeugnis erhielt und die Abschlussrede halten konnte. Die anderen merkten das und sahen mich alle verdutzt an. Das hat mich damals sehr gefreut und mir ein Selbstbewusstsein verpasst, das ich bis heute in meinem Job als Moderator nutze. Die Graduation war für mich ein Gamechanger.

Was bedeutet es dir, dieses Jahr die Graduation der aktuellen Abschlussklassen zu moderieren? Wie fühlt es sich an, als ehemaliger Schüler wieder auf der Bühne zu stehen?

Jeder braucht im Leben eine Leidenschaft. Meine ist es zu moderieren, Menschen zu informieren und zu unterhalten. Da ich das Lyceum sehr gut als Schüler und vor allem als Old Boy kennengelernt habe, ist es für mich der aussergewöhnlichste Event des Jahres und eine grosse Ehre.

Was möchtest du den diesjährigen Absolventinnen und Absolventen mit auf den Weg geben?

Wer Spass an seinem Job hat, muss nie wieder arbeiten. Das ist mein Lebensmotto und es gilt für jeden Absolventen, diesen Traumjob beziehungsweise seine Berufung zu

finden. Sei es als Finanzguru, als Unternehmenslenker oder als TV-Journalist. Wer Spass an seiner Arbeit hat, wird auch erfolgreich sein. Nicht nur finanziell.

Welche Momente aus deiner Zeit am Lyceum sind dir bis heute besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben – und warum?

Bis heute glaube ich fest an das Prinzip «Mens sana in corpore sano», ein gesunder Geist in einem gesunden Körper. Bildung und körperliche Fitness gehören für mich zusammen. «Bleibt gesund» war einer der Ratschläge, die Rektor Oliver Hartwright den Schülerinnen und Schülern am Ende seiner Rede mitgab, und was ist wichtiger, als gesund und geistig klar zu bleiben? Wenn der Körper fit ist, funktioniert auch der Kopf besser. Ich erinnere mich noch gut an das Gefühl, nach den Ferien ans Lyceum zurückzukehren. Mein Körper musste erst wieder in den «Alpenmodus» kommen, besonders beim Cricket oder Fussball. Diese Erfahrung hat mir ein Gespür für meinen Körper gegeben, das mich bis heute begleitet.

Inwiefern hat dich das Lyceum, persönlich, schulisch oder beruflich, geprägt? Was bleibt einem aus der Schulzeit? Es sind Freunde, die bis heute an meiner Seite stehen. Egal wo wir heute wohnen und was wir heute tun, die Verbindung bleibt. Die Berge bleiben einem für immer. Wenn du nach Jahren wieder hochfährst und die Berge siehst, dann fühlt sich das an wie Heimkommen, Erholung pur. Und dann das IB. Besonders der CAS hat mir Spass gemacht. Und das unabhängige Arbeiten bereitet einen super auf Uni und Beruf vor.

Du bist Mitglied im Zuoz Club, was bedeutet dir dieses Netzwerk heute?

Jeder braucht mal Hilfe, ob in schwierigen Lebenslagen oder einfach an einem fremden Ort, an den man gerade zieht. Der Zuoz Club ermöglicht es jedem Mitglied sich mit anderen Old

Boys und Young Girls weltweit zu vernetzen. Auf zuozclub. com gibt es neben dem Adressbuch auch viele Events, zu denen man gehen kann. Das erleichtert einem den Umzug. Und das Leben. Im Zuoz Club entstehen Freundschaften, die oft noch tiefgründiger sind als jene aus Lyceumszeiten.

Was macht für dich heute, aus der Perspektive eines Alumnus den «Spirit of Zuoz» aus?

Work hard, party harder, play fair, stay social. Don’t talk too much about how important you are.

Graduation as a Game Changer

Philipp Bächstädt on confidence, career and the “Spirit of Zuoz”

Do you remember your own graduation at the Lyceum? What stands out to you the most? How did you experience that moment?

As a student, you inadvertently build a certain image for yourself. I was seen as more of a nerd, a cricket fanatic with strange caps, and braces. When I completed my IB, I went directly to London to play cricket and earn some money. There, I was surrounded by people who had a very different mindset and perceived me differently as well. Maybe it was also because an orthodontist there freed me from my braces. In any case, I returned to the Lyceum with a completely new self-confidence and beamed like the Cheshire Cat when I received my diploma and was allowed to give the graduation speech. The others noticed this and looked at me in surprise. That made me very happy at the time and gave me a self-confidence that I still use today in my job as a moderator. The graduation was a game-changer for me.

What does it mean to you to moderate the graduation of the current graduating classes this year? How does it feel to stand on stage again as a former student?

Everyone needs a passion in life. Mine is to moderate, inform, and entertain people. Since I know the Lyceum well from my time as a student and especially as an old boy, this is the most extraordinary event of the year for me, and it is a great honour.

What message would you like to pass on to this year’s graduates?

If you enjoy your job, you’ll never have to work again. That’s my life motto, every graduate should find that dream job or their calling. Be it as a financial guru, an entrepreneur or a TV journalist. Those who enjoy their work will also be successful, not just financially.

What moments from your time at the Lyceum have stayed particularly in your memory to this day and why? What was unique for you about Zuoz?

To this day, I still very much believe in Mens sana in corpore sano. Fitness and education go hand in hand. Stay healthy was one of the hints that Headmaster Oliver Hartwright gave to the students at the end of his speech and what’s more

important than to stay healthy and sane? If your body is fit, your brain works much better. I will always remember the times when I came back to Lyceum after a holiday and how much my body needed to get back into the alpine mode, especially when we played cricket or football. That gave me a sensitivity for my body that I still have today.

In what way has the Lyceum shaped you personally, academically, or professionally?

What remains from school? Friends who are still by my side today. No matter where we live now or what we do today, the bond stays. The mountains remain forever. When you go back after years and see the mountains, it feels like coming home, pure relaxation. And then there’s the IB. In particular, CAS was fun for me. And the independent work prepares you well for university and your career.

You are a member of the Zuoz Club – what does this network mean to you today?

Everyone needs help at some point, whether in difficult life situations or simply in a new place they have just moved to. The Zuoz Club allows every member to connect with other old boys and young girls worldwide. On zuozclub.com, besides the address book, there are also many events you can attend. This makes moving and life easier. In the Zuoz Club, friendships are formed that are often deeper than those from Lyceum times.

Reflections from the School Captains

Serving as School Captains this past year has been both an honour and a rewarding challenge. It’s a role that has allowed us to grow as individuals, develop our leadership skills, and contribute in meaningful ways to the school community we care so deeply about.

One of the greatest highlights was being able to represent the student body at key school events, such as the Winter ball and graduation, whether it was welcoming guests, speaking at assemblies, or helping to shape student initiatives. Balancing the demands of our academic lives while fulfilling our responsibilities as Captains required strong time management. But these experiences have taught us valuable lessons in teamwork, communication, and perseverance, lessons we’ll carry with us well beyond Zuoz.

As we pass the role on to the new School Captains, we are confident that they will bring their own strengths, ideas, and energy. We are excited to see how they continue to build on what has been done, and we wish them all the very best.

In dieser Rolle hatten wir die Möglichkeit, persönlich zu wachsen, unsere Führungskompetenzen weiterzuentwickeln und einen Beitrag zu unserer Schulgemeinschaft zu leisten, die uns sehr am Herzen liegt.

Ganz besonders hat uns gefallen, die Schülerschaft bei wichtigen Schulveranstaltungen wie dem Winterball oder der Abschlussfeier zu vertreten. Sei es bei der Begrüssung der Gäste, bei Ansprachen auf Versammlungen oder bei der Mitgestaltung von Schülerinitiativen. Es erforderte ein hohes Mass an Zeitmanagement, unseren schulischen Alltag mit den Aufgaben als Schulsprecherin und Schulsprecher in Einklang zu bringen. Doch gerade diese Erfahrungen haben uns wertvolles Know-how in Sachen Teamarbeit, Kommunikation und Ausdauer vermittelt. Fähigkeiten, von denen wir auch nach unserer Zeit in Zuoz profitieren werden.

Morocco Surf Trip

Wow! What a fantastic trip! Although the trip had challenging moments due to a culture difference, it was great for the students to be immersed in the way of life in Morocco. Overall, this trip improved their patience, teamwork, friendships and communication and every single one of them grew as people throughout the week. The group of students should be proud of what they achieved, and I am honored to have led this trip alongside Miguel and Ignacio.

We had an intense, action-packed week with SOME free time and chilling by the pool (although we did not have much time for that)! Every morning, we surfed but we also… hiked Paradise Valley, rode camels, had two group dinners, played archery, had beach picnics, visited local markets, enjoyed safari karting, played beach volleyball, experienced tradition Moroccan food, sang our hearts out at karaoke, and sand dune surfed the desert. As you can imagine all trip participants were asleep daily by 22:30, or earlier.

My favorite part of the trip was watching the sunset on the second night! After dinner, as the sun was setting, we all visited the beach. Some students were dipping their toes in the water, while others were joining in a local game of football. The staff decided it would be a good idea to test the temperature of the water before our first surfing session in the morning and raced into the water. As we dived into the waves, most of the students were racing behind us, laughing but mainly screaming at the shock of the water temperature. We all enjoyed swimming and splashing around in the cold water while the sun set; it was a magical start to our trip in Morocco and a memory I will treasure.

Our surfing trip to Agadir was epic! The group vibe was amazing from day one, and we all made huge progress on the surf boards. By the end of each session, we could barely move... who knew surfing could be that exhausting? There was definitely a bit of moaning about sore muscles, but it was all worth it. Between the waves, the awesome food, and all the cool activities, it was a week full of laughs, wipeouts, and great memories.

Reflecting on our March Morocco trip, we are filled with cherished, heartwarming memories that surpassed our initial expectations throughout the week. Organising our planned activities presented some challenges, partly due to the rich cultural differences and unfamiliar systems in

Morocco, but primarily because our expectations were exceptionally high. Our priority was to ensure our group of students had the best possible experience. Looking back, we celebrate a week brimming with vibrant activities, countless surfing adventures, and shared joy. We couldn’t have wished for a better group of students, their boundless energy and infectious happiness made the trip truly unforgettable.

It was a great experience! I was grateful for the people on the trip and the staff were awesome. I suppose the long journey on the bus and plane wasn’t too bad. All the activities were fun, loved the camel ride, and I had a good time. I stood up on the board in my first lesson, which I am very proud of. I will definitely go surfing again!

The trip was very interesting and we interacted a lot, with new people. In addition to surfing every morning, we also did a lot of activities, for example visiting Paradise Valley, where a guide led us through the yellow mountains and little rivers. My friend and explored the nature. There were people selling traditional products and snacks along the way.

We also had a camel ride, which was fun. The activity liked the most is going to the markets, because we had to bargain for everything and it was satisfying to think that I worked hard for getting it. Towards the end we had a surprise activity, which was a kart ride. That was very cool except that we didn’t get to go too fast.

I really enjoyed staying at the hotel, it was close to the beach but the pool was VERY cold. The food at the hotel was good.

We got to know each other more and had a lot of adventures together. When people asked me if miss Morocco, I’ve always said, “I definitely miss the trip.”

The Morocco trip was a trip full of magical moments. For example, the day after we got to Morocco, we went down to the beach and waited to watch the sun set! It was so pretty! As the sun was setting, we all decided to run into the freezing cold water and enjoy the waves at the beach –from this moment, I knew this was the beginning of a great trip and it was so fun.

A Glimpse into the World of Finance

Investment Day with EFG Bank in Lugano

On Sunday March 30, the entire M5 class from Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz set off to Lugano to take part in the Investment Day hosted by EFG Bank. The journey began in the afternoon by coach – our destination: the headquarters of EFG Bank, where an exciting and educational day all about investing awaited us the next day.

After arriving at Hotel & Hostel Montarina, located in the heart of Lugano, we settled into our rooms. We were given some free time to explore Lugano by ourselves until 10 pm. Unfortunately, three friends returned 15 minutes later than agreed with the teachers because we had an issue with the Uber driver. As a consequence, we are now writing this article.

Monday marked the start of the official event. Everyone was looking forward to the programme. At EFG’s modern training academy, we were warmly welcomed by the team. The programme started off with an introduction about the EFG Bank itself and a quiz where we could test our previous

knowledge. Afterwards, we were introduced to various investment strategies. Next, we learned about the different asset classes. We were divided into smaller groups, and each team had to become experts on a specific asset class, such as bonds, shares and commodities. We had to prepare a presentation about our asset class and following that, present it in front of everyone.

A highlight of the day was the presentation by Julien Weissenberg, an expert in Artificial Intelligence. With engaging examples and a good sense of humor, he explained how AI is already transforming the financial world, from automated trading to the analysis of massive data sets. His key message: AI should be used to enhance human potential, fostering collaboration while ensuring ethical use and positive societal impact. Through the investment game, we had the chance to apply the knowledge we had learned earlier that day. New teams were formed, and we were handed a paper outlining the virtual client’s needs. Our task was to create a tailored investment strategy that

met those requirements. After preparing our proposal, it was evaluated based on both its performance and how well it met the client’s goals. In the end, our group presented the best proposal and won first prize, a cinema voucher worth 200 francs.

Before heading back to Zuoz, we were given an exclusive tour of EFG Bank’s main building. They showed us around the offices, the trading floor, where we got the chance to speak to experts about their work, and presented their art collection which was exhibited throughout the building. The most impressive part was the vaults on the lowest floor. They were equipped with top-level security measures and a seamless design, so impressive, in fact, that these vaults were even featured in a James Bond film. However, this statement still needs to be verified, as we have heard contradicting messages around this ‘rumour’.

Once we made a quick dinner stop on the way, we arrived back in Zuoz at 10:30 pm – tired, but full of new impressions. The Investment Day in Lugano wasn’t just informative, it was inspiring. Between investment simulations, cutting-edge AI talks, and a touch of Hollywood, we got to experience just how exciting the world of finance can be. It was a once-ina-lifetime experience that we wish the next year will also be able to enjoy. A warm-felt thank you to the team of EFG Bank St. Moritz for this memorable day.

Am Sonntag, dem 30. März, machte sich die gesamte Klasse M5 des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz auf den Weg nach Lugano, um am Investment Day der EFG Bank teilzunehmen. Die Reise begann am Nachmittag mit dem Bus. Das Ziel: der Hauptsitz der EFG Bank, an dem uns am nächsten Tag ein spannender und lehrreicher Tag rund ums Thema Investieren erwartete.

Nach unserer Ankunft im Hotel & Hostel Montarina, gelegen im Herzen von Lugano, bezogen wir unsere Zimmer. Anschliessend hatten wir bis 22 Uhr Zeit, die Stadt auf eigene Faust zu erkunden. Leider kamen drei von uns aufgrund von Problemen mit dem Uber-Fahrer 15 Minuten später zurück, als mit den Lehrkräften vereinbart. Genau deswegen schreiben wir jetzt diesen Artikel.

Am Montag wurde die Veranstaltung offiziell eröffnet. Alle blickten erwartungsvoll auf das bevorstehende Programm. In der modernen Trainingsakademie der EFG nahm uns das Team herzlich in Empfang. Zunächst erhielten wir eine Einführung in die Welt der EFG Bank, gefolgt von einem Quiz, in

dem wir unser Wissen testen konnten. Danach lernten wir zunächst verschiedene Anlagestrategien und -kategorien kennen. Dazu wurden wir in kleinere Gruppen aufgeteilt. Jede Gruppe sollte zu Expertinnen und Experten für eine bestimmte Anlageklasse wie Anleihen, Aktien oder Rohstoffen werden. Wir mussten eine Präsentation über unsere Anlageklasse vorbereiten und diese anschliessend vor allen anderen vorstellen.

Ein Höhepunkt des Tages war der Vortrag von Julien Weissenberg, einem Experten für Künstliche Intelligenz. Mit anschaulichen Beispielen und einer guten Portion Humor erklärte er uns, wie KI bereits heute die Finanzwelt verändert – vom automatisierten Trading bis hin zur Auswertung riesiger Datenmengen. Seine zentrale Botschaft: Künstliche Intelligenz sollte das menschliche Potenzial erweitern, die Zusammenarbeit fördern und dabei ethisch verantwortungsvoll und mit gesellschaftlichem Nutzen eingesetzt werden. Im anschliessenden Investment-Spiel konnten wir das neu erlernte Wissen direkt anwenden. Wir bildeten neue Gruppen und erhielten ein Briefing zu den Bedürfnissen eines virtuellen Kunden. Unsere Aufgabe war es, eine massgeschneiderte Anlagestrategie zu entwickeln, die genau auf diesen Kunden zugeschnitten war. Unsere Vorschläge wurden danach sowohl in Bezug auf die Leistung als auch auf die Zielgenauigkeit bewertet. Am Ende überzeugte unser Team mit dem besten Konzept, und wir gewannen den ersten Preis: einen Kinogutschein im Wert von 200 Franken.

Bevor wir die Rückreise nach Zuoz antraten, erhielten wir noch eine exklusive Führung durch das Hauptgebäude der EFG Bank. Wir durften die Büros und den Handelsbereich besichtigen und dort mit Expertinnen und Experten über ihre Arbeit sprechen. Auch die hauseigene Kunstsammlung, die im gesamten Gebäude aushängt, wurde uns präsentiert. Am meisten beeindruckten uns jedoch die Tresorräume im untersten Stockwerk: Hochsicherheitszonen in nahtlosem Design – so eindrucksvoll, dass sie sogar in einem JamesBond-Film zu sehen gewesen sein sollen. Das muss jedoch noch geprüft werden, denn wir haben zu diesem Gerücht widersprüchliche Aussagen bekommen.

Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp zum Abendessen kamen wir um 22.30 Uhr wieder in Zuoz an – müde, aber voller neuer Eindrücke. Der Investment Day in Lugano war nicht nur informativ, sondern auch inspirierend. Zwischen Anlagesimulation, modernster KI und einem Hauch von Hollywood konnten wir erleben, wie faszinierend die Finanzwelt sein kann. Es war eine einmalige Erfahrung, die wir auch der nächsten Jahrgangsstufe von Herzen wünschen. Ein grosses Dankeschön an das Team der EFG Bank St. Moritz für diesen unvergesslichen Tag.

Community Weekends at our School

Community means unity and shared experiences, and that’s what our school’s Community Weekends aim to create. These special weekends invite students to stay on campus and choose from a variety of organised activities, open to everyone. From thrilling adventures to cultural outings, there’s something for every interest, fostering friendships beyond the classroom.

This year’s Community Weekends were unforgettable. At St. Moritz’s Olympia Run, students chose between skeleton or mono bob, racing down the iconic track. In Pontresina, ice climbing offered a unique challenge, with students scaling icy walls using crampons and axes alongside expert guides. The highlight for many was skydiving in Samedan, where students jumped from a plane at 5,000 meters, soaring above the stunning landscape. Our traditional Christmas market trips to Innsbruck and Merano brought festive cheer, while the Winter and Summer Games saw alumni return to compete with students in ice hockey, skiing, fives, and cricket.

These weekends strengthen our campus community by bringing students together in new settings. Choosing their activities allows students to connect with peers they might not otherwise meet, especially in our diverse international community. This freedom sparks unique groups and deepens mutual understanding.

As an organiser, I strive to offer a varied programme that appeals to all, ensuring every student participates and finds something meaningful. The joy on students’ faces – whether skydiving, ice climbing, or cheering at the Games – makes the effort worthwhile. I’ll never forget the students’ gratitude after last weekend’s skydiving adventure or the thrill of the Olympia Run. These moments show how Community Weekends create lasting memories and stronger bonds, making our school a true community.

Gemeinsam sind wir stark

Wochenenden an unserer Schule, die verbinden

Gemeinschaft steht für Zusammenhalt und geteilte Erlebnisse und genau das ermöglichen die Gemeinschaftswochenenden an unserer Schule. An diesen besonderen Wochenenden bleiben die Schülerinnen und Schüler auf dem Campus und können aus einer Vielzahl organisierter Aktivitäten wählen, die allen offenstehen. Von Abenteuern bis zu kulturellen Unternehmungen ist für jedes Interesse etwas dabei. Dabei entstehen wertvolle Freundschaften ausserhalb des Klassenzimmers.

Diese Wochenenden stärken unsere Schulgemeinschaft, indem sie Begegnungen in einer neuen Umgebung ermöglichen. Die freie Wahl der Aktivitäten bringt auch die zusammen, die sich sonst in unserer vielfältigen internationalen Schülerschaft vielleicht nie begegnet wären. So entstehen einzigartige Gruppen und das gegenseitige Verständnis vertieft sich.

Als Organisator ist es mein Ziel, ein abwechslungsreiches Programm zu gestalten, das alle anspricht, damit jede und jeder mitmacht und davon profitiert. Schon allein für die Freude in den Gesichtern – ob beim Fallschirmspringen, Eisklettern oder beim Anfeuern der Teams – lohnt sich der Einsatz. Ich werde die Dankbarkeit nach dem Fallschirmsprung-Wochenende nie vergessen, ebenso wenig wie den Nervenkitzel beim Olympia Run. Diese Momente zeigen, wie die Gemeinschaftswochenenden bleibende Erinnerungen schaffen, den Zusammenhalt stärken und unsere Schule zu einer echten Gemeinschaft machen.

Die diesjährigen Gemeinschaftswochenenden waren unvergesslich. Beim Olympia Run in St. Moritz konnten sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler zwischen Skeleton und Monobob entscheiden und die legendäre Bahn hinunterrasen. In Pontresina bot Eisklettern eine ganz besondere Herausforderung. Ausgestattet mit Klettereisen und Eispickeln erklommen die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer gefrorene Wände unter professioneller, erfahrener Leitung. Für viele stellte das Fallschirmspringen in Samedan das absolute Highlight dar: Aus 5000 Metern Höhe sprangen die Schülerinnen und Schüler aus dem Flugzeug und schwebten über eine atemberaubende Landschaft. Unsere traditionellen Ausflüge auf die Weihnachtsmärkte in Innsbruck und Meran sorgten für festliche Stimmung, während bei den Winter- und Sommerspielen Ehemalige gegen aktuelle Schülerinnen und Schüler in den Disziplinen Eishockey, Skifahren, Fives und Cricket antraten.

Paris, More than a Trip

For us, Paris was more than just a school trip. We explored the city’s history, spoke the language, and experienced the culture up close. From the Louvre to the local cafés, every day brought something new. We learned, laughed, and returned with memories that will stay with us.

The Paris trip was a remarkable trip. We were having the best time and at the same time we were learning about the history of Paris and its monuments. The trip had great planning; I could see how much work it took to make it work perfectly every day. The teachers were always available if we needed anything, so we felt safe and well cared for. Also, they would always take advice on what we wanted to do on the trip which made it more enjoyable because we looked forward to the activities every day. The village we stayed in had great restaurants and was really pretty, from Japanese food to French food, Italian, Mexican… In conclusion, I really enjoyed this trip and would definitely go on another trip with the school.

In my opinion this trip was a very important trip because I learned a lot of French and a lot of the French culture, I really liked the “Musée du Louvre” because I learned a lot about French history, my favourite part of the museum was the Mona Lisa, I also liked my teacher from my French class he was really funny and he made the class interesting. When we had free time we went to stores and we went to visit places. In conclusion I really liked this trip because it gave a better understanding of the French culture.

In my opinion, this trip in Paris was so fun and also educative because the lessons helped a lot but it was also so fun because we did a lot of fun activities like going to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and lots more fun stuff. We also went shopping, the teachers were available to us, so we felt safe each time we visited a place. The food we had included a variety of national cuisines, from Mexican to French, Italian, and other types of food.

In general it was really fun we went to a lot of places like the Louvre, Notre-Dame, Eiffel Tower and others… This trip made me interact more directly with French people and definitely improved my talking skills it was really fun to learn about the French culture and also got to make more friends in general. Also the teachers were taking really good care of us and also gave us the opportunity to choose what to do in the afternoon after the classes which makes this a lot more enjoyable instead of being forced to do things all the time. Also, Mr Mahjoub and Mrs Bilbao were really helpful to make this trip way easier.

Fashion Club at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz

2025 marked the exciting launch of the Fashion Club ECA at Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. Created to offer a new creative outlet for students from both the Matura and International sections, across all age groups, the Fashion Club has quickly become a vibrant addition to our extracurricular landscape.

This year, our students had the unique opportunity to travel to the Paris Fashion Week, immersing themselves in the heart of global fashion. Back on campus, we explored the fundamentals of design, learning to create our own patterns and garments through the art of cutting, stitching, and sewing.

The dedication of our students culminated in an impressive debut runway show during the Winter Ball, a true highlight of the year. The creativity, perseverance, and teamwork that led to this event were nothing short of inspiring.

Following this success, the students continued their journey by organizing a sustainability-themed exhibition in June, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Through this project, they demonstrated not only artistic talent but also critical thinking and a genuine commitment to global responsibility.

We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and can’t wait to see what they create next!

Fashion Club am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz

Seit 2025 wird der Fashion Club als spannende neue ECA am Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz angeboten. Der Club wurde ins Leben gerufen, um Schülerinnen und Schülern aus beiden Schulzweigen (Matura und International) und aus allen Jahrgangsstufen eine neue kreative Ausdrucksmöglichkeit zu bieten. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit hat sich der Fashion Club zu einer wahren Bereicherung unseres Angebots an ausserschulischen Aktivitäten entwickelt.

In diesem Jahr hatten unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler die einzigartige Gelegenheit, zur Fashion Week nach Paris zu reisen und dort in die Welt der internationalen Mode einzutauchen. Zurück auf dem Campus befassten wir uns mit den Grundlagen des Designs und lernten, eigene Schnittmuster und Kleidungsstücke zu gestalten, zuzuschneiden und zu nähen.

Das Engagement unserer Schülerinnen und Schüler gipfelte in einer beeindruckenden Premiere: einer eigenen Modenschau beim Winterball, einem der Höhepunkte des Schuljahres. Besonders inspirierend waren die Kreativität, Ausdauer und Teamarbeit, die diesen Event ermöglichten.

Auf diesen Erfolg folgte im Juni eine von den Schülerinnen und Schülern organisierte Ausstellung zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit unter dem Titel «Reduce, Reuse, Recycle». Mit diesem Projekt zeigten sie nicht nur ihr künstlerisches Talent, sondern auch kritisches Denken und ein echtes Verantwortungsbewusstsein für globale Herausforderungen.

Wir sind unglaublich stolz auf die Leistungen des Fashion Club und blicken gespannt darauf, was in diesem Rahmen als Nächstes entsteht!

Zwischen Herd und Verantwortung

In der Hauswirtschaftswoche drehte sich für die M2-Klasse alles um Kochen, Haushalten und bewusstes Konsumieren. Beim Besuch eines Biohofs erfuhren die Schülerinnen und Schüler, wie Lebensmittel produziert werden und was nachhaltige Landwirtschaft bedeutet. Am Ende ging es nicht nur um Rezepte, sondern um Verantwortung und den eigenen Alltag.

Die Schülerinnen und Schüler der Maturaklasse 2 aus dem Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz trafen sich am Montagmorgen um 8 Uhr nach den Maiferien mit Herrn Patrick Baumann, Sportund Kochlehrer in der Chesa dals Pesters in Zuoz. Sie starteten gemeinsam den zweiten Teil der Hauswirtschaftswoche.

Zu beachten war, dass es unter den Jugendlichen auch Glutenintolerante und Veggies gab.

Der St. Galler Patrick Baumann will mit diesem Projekt nicht nur Kochen vermitteln, sondern der Klasse auch beibringen, wie man einen nachhaltigen Alltag lebt und einen ökonomischen Haushalt führt.

Während des Ausflugs zum Albulahof in La Punt-Chamues-ch lernten die Schülerinnen und Schüler Labels wie Demeter

oder BioSuisse kennen. Sie erfuhren, welche Vorgaben Bauernhöfe, die unter diesen Labels ihre Produkte verkaufen, einhalten müssen, um Tiere und Pflanzen zu schützen und damit qualitativ bessere Fleisch- oder Milchprodukte herzustellen. Die Tiere werden mit selbst hergestelltem und zertifiziertem Futter ernährt.

Die Kochwoche war ein voller Erfolg und die M2 besteht nun aus Expertinnen und Experten, wenn es ums Kochen geht. Sie fühlten sich jetzt viel wohler in der Küche und wüssten, wie sie mit ihrem Konsumverhalten der Umwelt etwas Gutes tun können.

Jubiläumssommer 30 Jahre International Summer Camps

Dieses Jahr feiern wir 30 Jahre unvergessliche Summer Camps an unserer Schule. Die Camps sind im Laufe der Jahre stetig gewachsen. Inzwischen verbringen jedes Jahr mehr als 400 Kinder und Jugendliche aus aller Welt eine inspirierende und entspannte Zeit mit interessanten Lektionen bei uns.

Die internationale Atmosphäre, der gegenseitige Respekt, die sportlichen Aktivitäten und die ausgewogene Ernährung machen das Camp zu einem einmaligen Erlebnis. Die Kombination aus internationalem Flair, pädagogischer Qualität und der besonderen Berglandschaft macht unsere Camps so einzigartig.

Jeden Morgen finden Sprachkurse oder Kurse zu digitalen Kompetenzen statt. Am Nachmittag werden Aktivitäten für jeden Geschmack angeboten: Zum Multisport-Programm und der Junior Golf Academy auf dem Golfplatz Zuoz-Madulain, die seit Beginn der Camps zum Programm gehören, kamen in den letzten Jahren Schauspielerei und Fussball hinzu.

Ob Englisch, Deutsch oder Französisch, digitale Kompetenzen, Leadership, Golf, Film Acting oder Fussballtraining –das vielfältige Programm fördert Talente und Persönlichkeitsentwicklung.

30 Jahre bedeuten drei Jahrzehnte voller Abenteuer, Lachen und persönlichem Wachstum.

Wir freuen uns, dieses besondere Jubiläum gemeinsam mit aktuellen und ehemaligen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern zu feiern.

Für die Gemeinschaft des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz ist es jedes Jahr eine grosse Freude und ein Privileg, in den Camps so viele junge Menschen aus dem Tal und der ganzen Welt willkommen heissen und beherbergen zu dürfen.

Anniversary Summer 30 Years of International Summer Camps

This year, we celebrate 30 years of unforgettable Summer Camps at our school. The camps have steadily grown over the years. More than 400 children and teenagers from all over the world spend an inspiring and relaxing summer at our school, enjoying exciting lessons.

The international atmosphere, mutual respect, sports activities, and balanced nutrition make the camp a truly unique experience. It is the combination of international flair, quality education, and the special mountain landscape that makes our camps so distinctive.

Every morning, language courses or digital skills classes take place. In the afternoon, activities are offered to suit every taste. In addition to the multi-sports program and the Junior Golf Academy at the Zuoz-Madulain golf course, both part of the programme since the camps began, acting and football have been added as new options in recent years.

Whether it’s English, German, or French, digital skills, leadership, golf, film acting, or football training, the varied program supports talents and personal development.

30 years means three decades full of adventure, laughter, and personal growth.

We look forward to celebrating this special anniversary together with new and former participants.

Guardians of the Riviera

A IBDP CAS Conservation Journey to Hyères, France

In the heart of the protected French Riviera, IBDP Grade 11 students took part in a week-long CAS conservation experience in Hyères, combining hands-on learning with environmental impact. Guided by their teachers and local experts, students immersed themselves in a variety of activities that blended science, sustainability, and reflection.

One of the week’s highlights was working alongside marine scientists in the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected area dedicated to marine mammals. Using hydrophones and observation tools, students collected data on dolphins and whales, contributing to a national biodiversity database. They also tackled ocean pollution by studying microplastics and learning about the ecological value of Posidonia seagrass meadows.

On land, students explored agroecology by harvesting vegetables, planting crops, and learning how sustainable farming supports biodiversity. At Agricampus, they suited up for a hands-on beekeeping session, discovering the role of pollinators in ecosystems and even crafting beeswax salves and balms.

The final day offered a rich conclusion. Students toured the Fort du Pradeau, connecting military and environmental heritage. That afternoon, a professional “nose” from Grasse, the historic capital of perfumery, guided students in crafting their own personal fragrances, blending creativity with a time-honoured tradition.

This experience left a lasting impact, shaping both CAS portfolios and students’ understanding of their role as global citizens and environmental stewards.

Hüterinnen und Hüter der Riviera

Eine Naturschutzreise des CAS-Programms der IBDPSchülerinnen und -Schüler nach Hyères, Frankreich

Im Herzen der geschützten französischen Riviera nahmen Schülerinnen und Schüler der 11. Klasse des IBDP-Programms an einer einwöchigen CAS-Naturschutzerfahrung in Hyères teil, um praktisches Lernen mit echtem Umweltschutz zu verbinden. Begleitet von ihren Lehrkräften und lokalen Expertinnen und Experten nahmen die Jugendlichen an vielfältigen Aktivitäten teil, die Naturwissenschaften, Nachhaltigkeit und persönliche Reflexion verknüpften.

Ein besonderes Highlight der Woche war die Zusammenarbeit mit Meeresforscherinnen und -forschern im Pelagos-Schutzgebiet, einem Areal, das sich dem Schutz von Meeressäugern verpflichtet. Mithilfe von Hydrofonen und Beobachtungsinstrumenten sammelten die Schülerinnen und Schüler Daten über Delfine und Wale und leisteten damit einen aktiven Beitrag zu einer nationalen Biodiversitätsdatenbank. Auch das Thema Meeresverschmutzung erforschten sie, etwa bei der Analyse von Mikroplastik und dem Studium der ökologischen Bedeutung von PosidoniaSeegraswiesen.

Der letzte Tag rundete die Woche auf besondere Weise ab: Bei einem Besuch des Fort du Pradeau begegneten sie gleichzeitig militärhistorischem Erbe und Umweltschutz. Am Nachmittag führte ein professioneller «Nose» aus Grasse –der historischen Hauptstadt der Parfümerie – die Schülerinnen und Schüler in die Kunst der Parfum-Herstellung ein. So konnten sie ihre eigenen Düfte kreieren und dabei Kreativität mit einer traditionsreichen Handwerkskunst verbinden.

Diese Erfahrung hinterliess einen bleibenden Eindruck, sowohl im CAS-Portfolio als auch im Bewusstsein der Jugendlichen für ihre Rolle als Weltbürgerinnen und -bürger und als verantwortungsvolle Gestalterinnen und Gestalter einer nachhaltigen Zukunft.

Ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle Beteiligten für diese unvergessliche Woche, insbesondere an das Team: Lisa Measures und Peter Evans (CAS-Koordinatorin und -Koordinator), Bridget Thomson (EE-Koordinatorin) und Marc Walsh (Filmspezialist).

An Land beschäftigten sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler mit dem Konzept der Agrarökologie. Sie ernteten Gemüse, pflanzten neue Kulturen und erfuhren, wie die nachhaltige Landwirtschaft die biologische Vielfalt fördert. Auf dem Agricampus rüsteten sie sich für eine praxisnahe Einführung in die Imkerei. Dabei lernten sie nicht nur die wichtige Rolle der Bestäuber im Ökosystem kennen, sondern stellten auch eigene Salben und Balsam aus Bienenwachs her.

Wir laden zu einer weiteren Theatersaison und somit zum direkten, persönlichen Austausch zwischen den Menschen auf der Bühne und im Publikum ein, zum Augenblick, zum Moment, der nicht zurückkehrt und doch lange bleibt.

Die English Theatre Company macht am 12. Dezember den Anfang. Gemeinsam mit dem Theaterleiter Ivo Bärtsch widmen sich die Jugendlichen der zeitgenössischen Theaterliteratur, deren Themen einen direkten Bezug zum Zeitgeschehen haben und dieses kritisch hinterfragen.

Am 30. Januar zeigt die Shakespeare Company einen Klassiker, wobei sie wie gewohnt auf der Suche nach neuen Erzählmethoden und -formen diese grossen Texte in den Kontext der heutigen Zeit setzt. Und am 24. April feiern wir die Premiere unserer dritten Theaterproduktion, ein Theaterabend, der eigens in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Spielenden kreiert wird.

Musik spielt auch in der kommenden Spielzeit eine wichtige Rolle in unseren Produktionen, und wir freuen uns auf die wunderbare Zusammenarbeit mit unseren Musiklehrpersonen Milena Pavlovic´ und Marc Navarro und ihren verschiedenen Bandformationen.

Welche Stücke es genau sein werden, die wir auf die Bühne bringen, wird wahrscheinlich in dem Augenblick entschieden, in dem Sie diese Ausgabe der «Zuoz Zeitung» in den Händen halten. Das ist die Zeit, wo die Gruppen nach den Sommerferien erstmals wieder zusammenkommen und klar wird, wie gross das jeweilige Ensemble ist, wo die Stärken und wo die Vorlieben der Beteiligten liegen. Dies ist jeweils ein Moment voller Spannung und Neugier, wenn wir uns wieder treffen oder uns neu kennenlernen, miteinander improvisieren, lachen und ausprobieren, und er wird erneut den Beginn einer wunderbaren Spielzeit markieren. Da sind wir uns sicher.

Schweizer Bühnengrössen wie Patti Basler und Philippe Kuhn sind dieses Jahr bei uns zu erleben, aber auch das Engadiner Musiktalent Gianni Tschenett, der sein neuestes Konzert in grosser Formation präsentiert. Als weiteren Höhepunkt zeigen wir das Tributkonzert für die Ratpack-Legende Dean Martin mit Luigi Panettone aka Hampa Rest. Und natürlich bieten wir viel Theater. Einerseits gastieren mit «Wunderübung» von Daniel Glattauer und «Der Spieler» von Fjodor Dostojewski zwei renommierte Ensembles im Zuoz Globe, andererseits werden wir mit unseren Schülerinnen und Schülern drei weitere vielversprechende Eigenproduktionen auf die Beine stellen.

DAS LYCEUM ALPINUM ZUOZ AM ROMANISCHEN THEATERFESTIVAL «FESTIVAL TRAVERS ZUOZ»

Wir sind stolz, dass die letztjährige Theaterproduktion «New World» aus der Feder unserer Alumna Nadine Hosang, ausgewählt wurde, im September 2025 das «festival travers zuoz» zu eröffnen. Die bemerkenswerte Geschichte wurde dafür eigens ins Romanische übersetzt.

Wir befinden uns im Jahre 2040. Zentraleuropa hat sich eingemauert, und die Schweiz wird von der KI «Helvetia» regiert. Alle sind glücklich. Doch ein unbedeutender Postangestellter beginnt, sich Gedanken zu machen.

Mit Ironie und Tiefgang mäandert Nadine Hosangs Geschichte zwischen Utopie und Dystopie. Sie zeigt uns, worauf es auch in Zukunft ankommt: Menschlichkeit und den Glauben, dass wir etwas bewirken können.

Unsere Schulband unter der Leitung von Milena Pavlovic´ und unsere talentierte Schauspielgruppe spiegeln einmal mehr, wie das Zusammenspiel von Internationalität und Regionalität erfolgreich funktionieren kann.

Celebrating the IBDP Visual Arts Final Exhibition

The IBDP Visual Arts Final Exhibition is always a standout event in the school calendar – and this year’s showcase was no exception. Set against the backdrop of months of exploration, experimentation, and personal growth, the exhibition was not just a display of artworks, but a testament to the passion, perseverance, and creativity of our Diploma Programme Visual Arts students.

Held in the school Gallery area Urezza, the space was transformed into a rich tapestry of ideas, media, and meaning. Each student curated an exhibition of their own, presenting a body of work that reflected not only technical skill, but also deep conceptual thinking. Visitors were guided through a diverse array of themes, finely executed by our students: Tiasia – Dreams, Adalena – Moments, Sissi –Love, Carl – Perspectives, Clare – Slavic Culture, Ares – Two culture clash, Juliana – Childhood, George – Melancholy and Emma – Womanhood.

For many students, the final exhibition marked the culmination of an 18-month journey. The IBDP Visual Arts course requires more than artistic talent; it demands inquiry, critical reflection, and the ability to communicate complex ideas through visual language. Students must produce a Comparative Study, Process Portfolio, and the

Exhibition, each contributing to their final grade. The exhibition, however, is where all strands come together –where process becomes product, and exploration meets presentation.

One standout feature, this year was the sheer variety of media on display. Traditional techniques such as oil painting, graphite drawing, and ceramics sat alongside digital illustrations, mixed-media installations, and experimental photography. One student explored childhood nostalgia through layered textile techniques and colour, while another used found objects and decomposing organic matter to explore the anxiety of the human condition. The juxtaposition of materials and methods created a dialogue across the space, inviting viewers to engage on both emotional and intellectual levels.

In their curatorial rationales, students offered insight into their intentions and processes, showing maturity and self-awareness. Many wrote about overcoming creative blocks, adapting to unfamiliar media, or discovering new inspirations through research. It was apparent to see the power visual communication has in shaping and reshaping our students as Artists and individuals.

Beyond technical achievement, what truly stood out was the authenticity of the voices behind the work. The IBDP encourages students to take ownership of their learning, and nowhere is this more visible than in the Visual Arts exhibition. These young artists chose themes that mattered to them – sometimes uncomfortable, often complex – and used their creative process as a means of making sense of the world around them.

The opening night drew a large and enthusiastic crowd of parents, peers, teachers, and members of the wider school community. The atmosphere was celebratory, but also reflective. Visitors took time to engage with the works, read curatorial texts, and speak with the artists about their inspirations. Many expressed admiration for the depth and maturity of the work, particularly given the balancing act students face with other demanding IB subjects.

Art teachers and DP coordinators praised the students for their resilience, especially in a programme that demands such a high level of independence and self-direction. “What makes this exhibition so special is the journey behind it,” one teacher noted. “These students didn’t just create artwork, they developed a voice, learned to take creative risks, and found ways to speak through visual language.”

The exhibition also provided valuable preparation for students planning to pursue art or design in higher education. Many used this opportunity to build strong portfolios, and several have already received offers from prestigious institutions. Yet even for those not heading into creative industries, the skills developed through the Visual Arts course – critical thinking, problem-solving, reflection, and communication – will serve them well in any field.

As the lights dimmed and the final visitors left the gallery, what remained was more than an art show, it was a collective snapshot of a generation of young thinkers and makers.

The IBDP Visual Arts Final Exhibition stood not only as a celebration of artistic achievement but also as a reminder of the role creativity plays in education and personal growth.

In a world that often values speed and productivity, this exhibition asked us to slow down, to look closely, and to listen – through colour, texture, form, and voice. And in doing so, it reminded us that art is not just something we make, but something we live.

“I am very proud to be part of our students journey, and I look forward to hearing about their next successful chapter, after leaving Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz”.

The Eton Fives Schools’ National Championships 2025

The Lyceum’s Eton Fives team achieved great success at the 2025 Schools’ National Championships, hosted by Shrewsbury School.

The team, comprising six boys and girls, arrived prepared to compete in the Mixed event on the first day. The competition was fierce, as always, with Shrewsbury School being the favourites. The Lyceum pairs fought hard, with several reaching the quarter-finals.

This initial Mixed event served as an excellent warm-up for the main festival events on the following day, where the boys and girls competed in their respective tournaments.

STRONG PAIRINGS, CLOSE MATCHES AND A VALUABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

In both the boys’ and girls’ events, the pools featured strong contenders from Repton, Mill Hill, Shrewsbury, St Bee’s, Highgate, and Aldenham.

Lyceum’s top boys’ pair, Kai and Konstantin, breezed through the pools and swiftly secured a place in the quarter-finals. The other two boys’ pairs encountered a more challenging time. Lyceum 2 (Auryn and Niclas) narrowly missed out on pool qualification. Lyceum 3 (Filipe and Tancredi),

relative beginners, demonstrated significant improvement throughout the pool stages, executing some remarkable shots, but ultimately fell short of further qualification and continued in the plate tournament.

In the girls’ competition, the Lyceum girls faced equally talented opponents and displayed their tenacity on the courts. The Lyceum’s third girls’ pair (Isabella and Alexandra), participating in their first tournament, showed glimpses of exceptional play and clearly improved throughout the day. Although they did not qualify through the pool, they exhibited talent that, with adjustments in their practice routine, could tip the balance in future competitions.

The first and second pairs (Sofiia and Lisa; Nicole and Ema) progressed through the pools and ultimately met in the quarter-finals. This match was likely the longest of the entire day, with the score reaching a deciding set. Both pairs played excellently and battled hard, but Nicole and Ema managed to edge out the first pair, winning 2-1.

FINAL MATCHES, BIG MOMENTS AND A WELL-DESERVED TITLE

One challenge of a one-day event like this is the lack of recovery time between matches. Immediately following Nicole and Ema’s epic quarter-final victory, they faced a formidable Mill Hill pair in the semi-final. Fatigue could have set in, both physically and mentally, after such an intense quarter-final. However, they persevered, taking the first set.

To Mill Hill’s credit, they began to improve their set-piece cut return and cut, gradually pulling their way back for a 2-1 victory.

Nicole and Ema delivered an excellent performance, considering that Nicole is a seasoned player, and Ema is a beginner. Let us hope they use this experience to advance even further in future competitions.

Simultaneously, Kai and Konstantin had been playing St Bee’s 1 in the semi-final and emerged with a decisive 2-0 victory. Last year, both Konstantin and Kai had lost in the final of this boys’ festival event. Now, they had another opportunity to claim the title.

Facing them were Repton’s first pair, a strong duo adept at both volleying and retrieving. Kai and Konstantin were visibly nervous in the early stages of the final, allowing an aggressive Repton (on the volley) to take the first set comfortably with a 12-4 win. However, a refocused Kai and Konstantin turned the tables immediately in the second set, drawing even at 12-4.

The final set provided a thrilling conclusion to an unforgettable couple of days. All four players rose to the challenge, but Kai and Konstantin maintained their composure, securing the win at 12-6. Finally, the trophy was theirs!

The Lyceum squad conducted themselves superbly on and off the court. With the Summer Games event approaching, let us hope they continue this remarkable run.

Sporting Highlights of the Second Semester

Students continued to engage positively in the Extra-Curricular Activities programme during the second semester and whilst there are fewer tournaments, due to examination periods, the students represented the school well in a range of sports tournaments, trips and tours.

The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz extra-curricular sports teams and coaches that achieved the notable results in tournaments during the second semester of 2025 are listed below:

• 2nd Place BMM Girl’s Volleyball / B.Hartwright

• 2nd Place BMM Boy’s Volleyball / R.Engels

As always, it is not merely the result that matters, but how the students represented the school with notable performance from the cricket team achieving a 3rd place finish at Cricket on Ice, a strong performance from the ice hockey team in the annual SMM and a first invitation for the boys volleyball team to compete in the volleyball SMM.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS TRIPS & TOURS

There were also international trips and tours for the senior girls volleyball team and both of the senior football teams.

The senior girls volleyball teams travelled to Germany as SGIS and played the Franconian International School in Bavaria, losing to the GISST champions 2-1.

The senior boys and girls football teams travelled to Athens for their international tour, with both teams winning their tours playing matches against international schools and local adult teams. The girls team even managed a clean sweep of a 3-0 tour win, to top off their most successful season to date. The performances on the pitch were matched by the conduct of the students off it, with the students bonding well as a group on activities such as cycling tours of nearby islands.

Sportliche Höhepunkte im zweiten Schulhalbjahr

Auch im zweiten Schulhalbjahr beteiligten sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler mit Begeisterung an den angebotenen ausserschulischen Aktivitäten. Obwohl in dieser Phase des Schuljahres aufgrund der Prüfungszeiten weniger Turniere stattfinden, vertraten die Schülerinnen und Schüler das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz erfolgreich an zahlreichen Sportturnieren, auf Reisen und Ausflügen.

Diese Sportmannschaften sowie Trainerinnen und Trainer des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz konnten im zweiten Schulhalbjahr 2025 besondere Erfolge erzielen:

INTERNATIONALE SPORTREISEN UND -TURNIERE

• 2. Platz BMM Jungen-Volleyball / R. Engels Wie immer zählen nicht nur die Ergebnisse, sondern vor allem auch das Engagement, mit dem die Schülerinnen und Schüler die Schule vertreten. Besonders hervorzuheben ist der 3. Platz des Cricket-Teams beim Turnier «Cricket on Ice», eine starke Leistung des Eishockey-Teams beim jährlichen SMM sowie die erstmalige Einladung der Jungen-Volleyballmannschaft zur Teilnahme an der Volleyball-SMM.

Ebenfalls war das Lyceum Alpinum international sportlich unterwegs: Die Mädchen-Volleyballmannschaft der Oberstufe reiste im Rahmen von SGIS nach Deutschland und spielte gegen die Franconian International School in Bayern. Das Spiel gegen die GISST-Meisterinnen endete mit einem knappen 2:1 für die Gastgeberinnen.

Die Mädchen- und Jungen-Fussballmannschaften der Oberstufe reisten auf internationale Sporttour nach Athen. Beide Teams konnten ihre Reisen mit Siegen abschliessen und gewannen die Spiele gegen internationale Schulen sowie lokale Erwachsenenmannschaften. Der Mädchenmannschaft gelang sogar ein makelloser 3:0-Turniersieg, der bislang erfolgreichste Saisonabschluss in der Mannschaftsgeschichte. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler überzeugten nicht

nur mit sportlicher Leistung, sondern bewiesen ebenso abseits des Spielfelds einen starken Zusammenhalt als Gruppe, zum Beispiel bei Radtouren auf benachbarten Inseln.

Summer Games 2025: 100 Years of Cricket

The Summer Games of 2025 saw the Lyceum Alpinum and Zuoz Club celebrate the significant milestone of cricket being played at the school for one hundred years, and this Summer Games lived up to the occasion.

The Summer Games started with a cricket training session on the Friday organised by Old Boy and coach, Henry Wenk. This gave the returning Zuoz Club members an opportunity to catch up and refresh their cricket skills before the cricket the next day. This ran simultaneously to the golf which was played in fantastic weather conditions and resulted in a win for the Zuoz Club.

Later on the Friday there was the football match and, with many younger more recent graduates returning to represent the Zuoz Club, there was the youngest Zuoz Club football team in years. Yet despite their youthful energy and endurance they were unable to avoid defeat with an exceptionally well-drilled Lyceum Alpinum team winning 7-1.

The Friday evening provided the students and some graduating students the opportunity to mix socially and share memories at a dinner organised by the Zuoz Club. This enabled the students to gain an insight into the experiences of the Zuoz Club members and the students in turn showed that the Spirit of Zuoz is very strong in this new generation of students at the Lyceum Alpinum.

The Saturday of the Summer Games started with Fives and whilst there were strong performances, especially in a very even match between the first pairs, the Zuoz Club came out victorious in the Fives.

The Fives was followed by volleyball and tennis, with the Lyceum girls and boys volleyball teams with dominant wins against a mixed Zuoz Club team and close matches in the tennis ending with wins for the Lyceum Alpinum in both the volleyball and tennis.

The final sporting event of the Summer Games was cricket and both the 1st and 2nd XI matches were great examples of the legacy of cricket at the Lyceum Alpinum. The 2nd XI match was a comprehensive win for the Zuoz Club despite the valiant efforts of the students, with a notable half-century score by Percy Albrecht. The first XI match saw some of the highest quality cricket in recent years, with the match being dominated by the individual brilliance of the schools 1st XI captain Eric Schlumberger. Eric opened the batting and put on an outstanding 113 runs, becoming the first student since the early 1990s to score a century and batting through 23 overs to leave the school in a commanding position. The Zuoz Club opening partnership started steadily and were looking to settle when rain stopped play 13 overs in. One of the great highlights of the weekend was not the players, but the return of two former Games Masters, Bob Felce and Mark Jones, who returned to umpire the cricket matches.

The final standings saw the Lyceum Alpinum retain the Summer Games, Eric Schlumberger win cricketer of the Summer Games and recent graduate Sebastiano Prospero win the Zuoz Club player player of the Summer Games.

100 Y ears of CriCket

Wintermomente auf Corviglia

Sonnenschein, Nebel und leichter Schneefall. Das wechselhafte Wetter forderte die Fahrerinnen und Fahrer am Wintersporttag beim Skirennen auf Corviglia so richtig heraus. Zeitweise betrug die Sicht kaum 20 Meter, aber unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler kämpften sich tapfer durch die Tore des Riesenslaloms.

In der Nacht zuvor hatte es geschneit und die Pisten präsentierten sich am Morgen in perfektem Zustand. Ab und zu lichtete sich der Nebel und gab den Blick auf strahlenden Sonnenschein und tiefblauen Himmel frei. Das Freifahren wurde so zum echten Genuss, den alle sichtlich genossen.

Leistungsmässig ragte in der Kategorie Ski besonders Marah heraus. Mit ihrer beeindruckenden Zeit fuhr sie klare Tagesbestzeit und liess damit sogar alle Jungs hinter sich.

Ein Schulanlass in einem der weltbesten Skigebiete. Was für ein Privileg, diese besonderen Momente gemeinsam erleben zu dürfen.

Unihockeyturnier der Bündner Mittelschulen in Zuoz

7 Damen- und 7 Herrenmannschaften waren für die Bündner Unihockey Mittelschulmeisterschaften im Februar eingeschrieben. 140 Schülerinnen und Schüler mit ihren Coaches sind nach Zuoz gereist und haben in intensiven, aber immer fairen und teils hochklassigen Spielen um Tore und Punkte gekämpft.

Meistgenannte Favoriten waren die Mannschaften der Kantonsschule Chur. Bei den Damen konnten sie sich klar durchsetzen und gewannen das Turnier, während sich die Herren mit dem dritten Rang begnügen mussten und die ESMS Schiers am Ende zuoberst stand.

Ein sehr gutes Turnier spielten unsere Damen und landeten mit 5 Punkten auf dem fünften Rang. Die Herren zeigten ebenfalls gute Spiele mussten sich aber, wenn auch teilweise nur knapp, geschlagen geben.

Young Team Shines in St. Gallen

The 2025 SMM held in St. Gallen proved to be a thoroughly positive experience for all participants. This year, we were proud to field a younger team, captained by Ben from M5, who led with enthusiasm and maturity. Notably, our youngest player, Austin from I1, was just 12 years old – an impressive effort for one so young.

In the round-robin stage, the team delivered a strong performance, securing two wins and two losses. A standout moment came when Kimi scored an exciting hat trick, his first for the school.

We advanced to the playoff for third place, where we competed fiercely. Although we narrowly missed out on a podium finish, the match was hard-fought and displayed the team’s continued effort.

Every player – both boys and girls – represented the team with discipline, sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play. It was a pleasure to be involved with the young group.

Captain Ben shared his thoughts after the match:

“It was great to see the team’s effort during the tournament. We did our best, mentally and physically. I enjoyed seeing how each player of the team made a difference on the ice!”

Looking ahead, Head Coach Harry is optimistic about the future, already setting his sights on next year’s tournament with confidence. With another year of training and development, the team will be well-positioned to improve on this year’s result.

Junges Team überzeugt in St. Gallen

Das SMM-Turnier 2025 in St. Gallen war für alle Beteiligten eine durchwegs positive Erfahrung. In diesem Jahr konnten wir voller Stolz ein junges Team ins Rennen schicken, angeführt von Ben aus der M5, der mit Begeisterung und Reife die Kapitänsrolle übernahm. Besonders erwähnenswert ist unser jüngster Spieler, Austin aus der I1, der mit nur 12 Jahren eine beeindruckende Leistung zeigte.

In der Vorrunde überzeugte das Team mit zwei Siegen und zwei Niederlagen. Ein besonderer Moment war Kimis gelungener Hattrick, sein erster für unsere Schule.

Wir erreichten das Spiel um Platz drei und lieferten einen tapferen Wettkampf. Auch wenn wir knapp an einem Platz auf dem Podest vorbeischrammten, bewies das Team Kampfgeist und einen unermüdlichen Einsatz.

Alle vertraten die Mannschaft mit Disziplin, Sportsgeist und Fairness. Es war eine Freude, mit dieser jungen Gruppe zusammenzuarbeiten.

Kapitän Ben äusserte sich nach dem Spiel:

«Es war grossartig zu sehen, wie sehr sich das Team während des Turniers bemühte. Wir haben unser Bestes gegeben, sowohl mental als auch körperlich. Es gefiel mir sehr zu sehen, wie jede Spielerin und jeder Spieler auf dem Eis einen Beitrag leistete!»

Mit Blick in die Zukunft zeigt sich Cheftrainer Harry zuversichtlich und richtet den Blick bereits auf das Turnier im nächsten Jahr. Mit einem weiteren Jahr Training und Entwicklung ist das Team bestens aufgestellt, um das diesjährige Ergebnis zu übertreffen.

Mit der Sonne kam der Ehrgeiz…

Am 19. Juni 2025 fand bei strahlendem Sommerwetter unser diesjähriger

Leichtathletikwettkampf statt. Die Bedingungen waren ideal, und mit dem Sonnenschein kam auch der Ehrgeiz. Viele Schülerinnen und Schüler zeigten grossen Einsatz und erzielten hervorragende Leistungen.

In den Disziplinen Sprint, Hoch- und Weitsprung sowie im Wurf (Ballwurf für Klasse 1 und 2, Speerwurf ab Klasse 3) wurde gerannt, gesprungen und geworfen. Der 1000-MeterLauf als fünfte Mehrkampfdisziplin wurde bereits im regulären Sportunterricht vor dem Wettkampftag absolviert.

Für ein sportliches Highlight sorgte Marah, die nach ihrem Erfolg beim Wintersporttag nun auch den Sommersporttag für sich entschied und sich damit das «Double» holte.

Der Tag war geprägt von Bewegung, Teamgeist und echter Freude am Sport. In der darauffolgenden Woche wurden die drei besten Athletinnen und Athleten jeder Kategorie in einer feierlichen Assembly in der Aula geehrt. Wir gratulieren herzlich!

As the sun came out, so did the ambition…

On 19 June 2025, our annual athletics competition took place under bright summer skies. The conditions were perfect, and as the sun came out, so did the ambition. Many students gave it their all and delivered outstanding performances.

There was sprinting, jumping, and throwing across the disciplines of sprint, high jump, long jump, and throwing (ball throw for Years 1 and 2, javelin from Year 3 onwards).

The 1000-meter run – the fifth event in the multi-discipline competition – had already been completed during regular PE lessons before the event day.

One of the day’s sporting highlights came from Marah, who followed up her win at the winter sports day by claiming victory again at the summer event – securing a rare “double.”

The day was marked by energy, team spirit, and genuine joy in sport. The following week, the top three athletes in each category were honored in a celebratory assembly in the school auditorium. Congratulations to all!

Bewegung, Musik und gemeinsame Erlebnisse bestimmten das Programm am 1. Juli zum Schuljahresende. Im Mittelpunkt standen sportliche Wettkämpfe und ein beeindruckendes Konzert der Maturaklassen.

Während die Klassen 3 bis 5 ihr sportliches Können in spannenden Turnieren unter Beweis stellten, die Jungen beim Fussball, die Mädchen beim Volleyball, waren die jüngeren Schülerinnen und Schüler der Klassen 1 und 2 mit viel Einsatz beim Baseball dabei. Viele Teams zeigten grossen Ehrgeiz und überzeugten mit engagierten Auftritten auf teils bemerkenswert hohem Niveau. Der sportliche Wettkampf war geprägt von Fairness, Teamgeist und viel Bewegung bei bestem Sommerwetter.

Im Anschluss folgte ein musikalischer Höhepunkt im Speisesaal: das Konzert der Maturaklassen. Eindrucksvoll, wie viele Schülerinnen und Schüler ein Instrument spielen, und sich so ein klangstarkes Ensemble zusammenfinden konnte. Die Musik und der Gesang waren kraftvoll und harmonisch und machten das Zuhören zu einem echten Genuss.

Dazu servierte die Schulküche feine Snacks, die den Nachmittag auch kulinarisch abrundeten.

Der Tag spiegelte das vielfältige Angebot des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz in idealer Weise wider. Ein rundum gelungener Abschluss des Schuljahres mit Bewegung, Musik und Gemeinschaftsgefühl.

Impact!

It was a wonderful experience to be part of this year’s graduation ceremony. The moderation by Old Boy and Zuoz Club board member Philipp Bächstädt, added a professional and entertaining touch to the afternoon program. In preparation for the event, Philipp coached all speakers in an online training session. This training, followed by a dress rehearsal at the Lyceum, created a strong sense of teamwork among students, teachers, and alumni – resulting in a very positive impact.

For my speech, I reflected on the meaning of personal impact in today’s world, as this is often a topic of interest for young students. Impact is not only meaningful when it saves lives or challenges the theory of relativity; it can also be a small contribution to one individual that leaves lasting effects.

The example of Gordon Spencer is particularly inspiring. His sphere of influence may have been limited to the walls of the Lyceum, yet his strong principles and passion for sports have influenced thousands of students and teachers for more than 100 years. We still play Cricket and Fives at the Lyceum and as alumni. We still honour the principle of fair play as the cornerstone of the spirit of Zuoz, and we still return to the Lyceum for the Summer and Winter Games.

I look forward to hearing about the impact the new graduates will make during their studies and professional careers. Above all, I trust them to carry the torch forward, keeping our unique alumni association alive and shaping its future as a member of the board, as a regional president or by taking part in our regional events and reunions at the Lyceum.

Summer Games 2025

The event as the sporting highlight in Zuoz, where friendship, competitive spirit, and plenty of good cheer come together. This year’s Summer Games were held in the spirit of celebrating 100 years of cricket at the school.

GOLF – PRECISION TO START

As tradition has it, the games kicked off on Friday afternoon with the golf tournament. In the team competition, the Old Boys & Girls claimed victory. The best individual score, however, went to a student: Sebastiano showed a sure hand on the green and left the competition behind.

FOOTBALL – SPEED BEATS EXPERIENCE

In football, the students’ superior fitness was clearly on display. Despite some strong individual performances from the Old Boys, the school team won convincingly – the experience of the alumni was no match for the quick passing game of the youth.

FIVES – TENSION UNTIL THE END

On Saturday morning, things heated up on the Fives courts: nine pairs competed, and the matches were fiercely contested. In the end, the Old Boys narrowly secured the overall victory. The first student pair, Büchi and Chris, were in top form. For Niklas Döbler and Alex Heuberger, the decisive set was a close call, but they kept their cool and took the win. Thanks to coach Matt, the student team once again showed excellent technical skills and fitness.

VOLLEYBALL – STRONG OPPONENTS AT THE NET

In volleyball, the Old Boys had to improvise, as they didn’t have a full team available. Even with the reinforcement of a student, they could not prevail against the impressive men’s and women’s teams of the school.

CRICKET – A CENTURY AND A SPECIAL STORY

The First Team match began with the school batting, and thanks to a fantastic performance from Erik, who scored a century, the start was very promising. However, the second innings were interrupted by heavy rain, and the match ended in a draw.

The Second Team match was a story of its own: for the 100year anniversary, it was only at the very last moment that a full Old Boys team could be assembled. Improvisation was needed – and it worked. Thanks to the last-minute commitment of Fenno, Künchen, and Clemens, the match was able to go ahead at all. The dedication of these volunteers showed that the Summer Games are not just about winning or losing, but about being there for one another, especially when help is most needed.

CONCLUSION

After numerous highlights and a few tough defeats, the Old Boys & Girls ultimately had to concede victory to the school. We congratulate the students on their strong sporting performances and their fair play – true to the spirit of Zuoz.

SUMMERGAMES AFTERPARTY

When darkness falls over St. Moritz, wild bats and night owls come out to play. Not necessarily always at Dracula’s, the Sunnybar also invites you to party in its stylish atmosphere. None other than DJ old boy Thilo Holstein really got down to business and won over the party crowd with his groovy hits. People danced until they dropped. Away from the dance floor, young girls and old boys chatted cheerfully and exuberantly, just like in school days. From David Guetta to the venerable Udo Jürgens, everything that made the old boys’ hearts beat faster was represented. At 4 a.m., the last night owl flew away, and when the sunlight broke through, it was time to say, “See you again in a year at the latest.”

Summer Games 2025

Das Event als sportlicher Höhepunkt, bei dem Freundschaft, Wettkampfgeist und jede Menge gute Laune in Zuoz aufeinander treffen. Die diesjährigen Summergames standen ganz im Namen der 100 Jahre Cricket an der Schule.

GOLF – PRÄZISION ZUM AUFTAKT

Traditionell starteten die Spiele am Freitagnachmittag mit dem Golfturnier. In der Teamwertung konnten die Old Boys & Girls den Sieg erringen. Die beste Einzelwertung jedoch ging an einen Schüler: Sebastiano bewies auf dem Grün ein sicheres Händchen und ließ die Konkurrenz hinter sich.

FUSSBALL – TEMPO SCHLÄGT ERFAHRUNG

Im Fußball kam die konditionelle Überlegenheit der Schüler deutlich zum Tragen. Trotz einzelner starker Auftritte auf Seiten der Old Boys setzte sich die Schülermannschaft klar durch – hier half auch die Routine der Ehemaligen nicht gegen das schnelle Passspiel der Jugend.

FIVES – SPANNUNG BIS ZUM SCHLUSS

Am Samstagmorgen ging es in den Fives-Courts zur Sache: Neun Paare traten an, die Spiele waren hart umkämpft.

Am Ende konnten die Old Boys den Gesamtsieg knapp für sich entscheiden. Das erste Schüler-Paar, Büchi und Chris, zeigte sich in Höchstform. Für Niklas Döbler und Alex Heuberger wurde es im entscheidenden Satz noch einmal eng, doch sie behielten die Nerven und gewannen. Dank Trainer Matt präsentierte sich die Schüler-Mannschaft technisch und konditionell erneut in starker Verfassung.

VOLLEYBALL – STARKE GEGNER AM NETZ Beim Volleyball mussten die Old Boys improvisieren, da kein vollständiges Team zur Verfügung stand. Selbst mit Verstärkung durch eine Schülerin konnten sie sich nicht gegen die beeindruckenden Damen- und Herrenteams der Schule behaupten.

CRICKET – CENTURY UND EINE BESONDERE GESCHICHTE

Das First-Team-Spiel begann mit dem Batting der Schule, und dank einer fantastischen Leistung von Erik, der einen Century erzielte, war der Start vielversprechend. Die zweiten Innings wurden jedoch von starkem Regen unterbrochen, das Spiel endete unentschieden.

Das Second-Team-Spiel war eine Geschichte der besonderen Art: Zum 100-jährigen Jubiläum gelang es erst in letzter Minute, ein vollständiges Team der Old Boys aufzustellen. Improvisation war gefragt – und erfolgreich. Dank des kurzfristigen Einsatzes von Fenno, Künchen und Clemens konnte das Match überhaupt stattfinden. Der Einsatz dieser Freiwilligen zeigte: Bei den Summer Games geht es nicht nur um Sieg oder Niederlage, sondern um das Miteinander, besonders wenn Hilfe dringend gebraucht wird.

FAZIT

Nach zahlreichen Highlights und manch schmerzlicher Niederlage mussten sich die Old Boys & Girls am Ende der Schule geschlagen geben. Wir gratulieren der Schülerschaft zu starken sportlichen Leistungen und zu einem fairen Auftreten – ganz im Sinne des «Spirit of Zuoz».

SUMMERGAMES AFTERPARTY

Wenn die Dunkelheit über St Moritz einbricht, dann flattern besonders wilde Fledermäuse und Nachteulen aus. Nicht unbedingt immer gleich ins Dracula, die Sunnybar lädt ebenfalls mit feschem Ambiente zur Party ein.

Kein anderer als DJ old boy Thilo Holstein legte sich so richtig ins Zeug und überzeugte mit seinen Groovy Hits die partymeute. Es wurde getanzt das die Fetzen flogen. Abseits wurde fröhlich und ausgelassen geplaudert, Young Girls und old Boys wie zu Schulzeiten unter sich. Von David Guetta bis zum ehrwürdigen Udo Jürgens war alles vertreten, was das old Boy Herz höher schlug. Um 4 Uhr früh war dann auch die letzte Nachteule ausgeflogen, wenn dann das Sonnenlicht einbricht, heisst es, wir sehen uns spätestens in einem Jahr wieder.

Zuoz Club and German Cricket Club on Ice

The glorious defending champions even lost against the school. It is never easy coming back to Cricket on Ice as defending champions –the problem is, the opponents don’t underestimate you anymore.

However, the first two games looked as if everything was going as usual. We were bowled out for 70-odd in both matches, and both times, the opponents were already grinning and laughing at our performance – and our embarrassing alpine outfits. Little did they know that it’s never over until the fat lady sings. As a result, we won both matches comfortably.

The Dirndl and Lederhosen Old Boys and Girls, now playing for German CC, advanced to the semi-final. The Estonians had just been coached by Brett Lee and were absolutely fired up. Maybe it was also because our captain had a shot of an undefinable Estonian spirit that we clearly lost.

Never mind: at least we could play the very talented school team, who also hit us all over the frozen park. Bad luck for the Gamesmaster: some of the cricketing heroes just graduated and will now be joining the Zuoz Club team. Thank you, Ben, for continuously supplying us with new talent – without even demanding a transfer fee.

Remembering Benny Oei

A Life of Resilience, Spirit, and Enduring Legacy

Benny Oei has represented, for a great many Zuozers, the very symbol of the Spirit of Zuoz, and he has left a vivid memory in all those who had the privilege to meet him. I will not attempt to write his biography; instead, this is meant as a tribute to him and to the values he embodied: fair play, sportsmanship, positivity, a life philosophy filled with humour, and always a smile.

Needless to say, there is no other Benny.

I asked Patricia Anklin to help me write this article, and I hope that Benny will smile from up there, looking at these photographs and reading these few lines…

I decided to dedicate the Geneva Fives Tournament to Benny – now named the Benny Oei Fives Tournament, as you can see from the cup in the photographs. In some other pictures, you’ll find Benny with Anne-Marie Kurz, with Nicolás Oechsle, and with the Zuoz Fives and Cricket teams, as well as enjoying lively gatherings around a jolly table in the Engadin.

A Century of Memories

On June 21 of last year, our beloved Benny would have turned 100 years old! Let that sink in for a moment – the historical events he witnessed, the drama he lived through, and the remarkable person he became through it all. Born in China, forced to flee, losing his citizenship, living in various countries with his wonderful Swiss-born wife, Marianne, and finally settling in Switzerland. But these few remarks are not so much about Benny’s biography as about the person he became and what he meant to the Lyceum (which he attended from 1937 to 1942 with his brother), to the Zuoz Club, and to me (and my husband Clemens) personally, over the decades we were grateful to have known him.

The Lyceum was his HOME, as Benny fondly mentioned in his speech at the 100-year celebration of the Lyceum in 2004. He was stateless, and the Lyceum at that time mostly educated European students. He had to learn much that was foreign to him during his formative years – an early pioneer for all those international students who would follow in the decades to come. His lifelong deep love and gratitude for the Lyceum, and afterwards for the Zuoz Club, never wavered. He was very active in the Zuoz Club, from Cricket to Fives and even on the Board. Marianne and Benny attended countless regional events and international Zuoz Club trips – and were always at the centre of attention.

But first and foremost, Benny was the “Conscience” of the Club, long before he was elected an Honorary Zuoz Club Member, while exemplifying and joyfully living what the Spirit of Zuoz truly means: fair play, character, integrity, loyalty, tolerance, team spirit, and – last but not least –friendships that last a lifetime. Benny was a follower of

Confucius and believed in reincarnation; hopefully, he is somewhere out there, still watching over the Zuoz Club!

Clemens and I have so many fond memories we cherish dearly: the monthly Cricket meets outside Zurich, Board and Intermediary Meetings in various countries, regional events, dinners of delicious Chinese food at his home, a flight to Prague for a Board Meeting when his beloved wife had already passed away and he needed some help, and – last but not least – my final lunch with him in Zurich before he moved to Holland to live with his daughter Audrey. Thank you for everything, and above all, for your friendship!

Jubiläums-Matura

Unsere Jubiläums-Matura 1975 – 2025

Juli 2023: Gian-Arard Melcher, mein Klassenkamerad und Banknachbar von 1968–75, führt am Rande des Nationalparks wichtige Telefongespräche. Mir bleibt derweil Musse, um beim Rauschen der Ova da Varusch in Gedanken über Zeit und Vergänglichkeit zu versinken.

«SAG MIR, WO DIE MÄDCHEN SIND…»

1968 übernachteten wir zum ersten Mal hier, in der Blockhütte von Gians Onkel; wir versuchten uns im Pfeifenrauchen und sprachen, als es dunkel wurde, über unsere Klassenkameradinnen. In unserer Klasse waren von Anfang an ungewöhnlich viele Mädchen, deswegen durften wir, als einzige am Lyceum, unsere Klassenfeste als Tanzabende gestalten...

Was machen sie wohl heute, Brigitta, Constanza, Daniela, Ladina, Marianne, Nadine, Patricia? Wo leben sie? Würden wir uns auf der Strasse wiedererkennen…? Das letzte Treffen fand 2008 in St. Moritz statt: Damals führte uns Gianni Berry durch das soeben eröffnete Museum, das dem Werk seines Grossvaters gewidmet ist, des Kurarztes und Malers Peter Robert Berry.

«… WO SIND SIE GEBLIEBEN?»

Das ist nun auch schon wieder 15 Jahre her, inzwischen ist Gianni leider gestorben. 2025 wird es 50 Jahre her sein, dass wir zusammen die Matura machten... das müsste doch von allen gefeiert werden! Ob jemand eine Adressliste hat?

Ja, Brigitta Ruoss hat. Doch ein Grosssteil der Mailadressen ist veraltet, denn inzwischen sind die meisten von uns pensioniert. So beginnt eine weltweite Recherche via Buschtelefon, von Boston bis Hongkong. Schliesslich können alle sieben Maturandinnen von 1975 und doppelt so viele Maturanden erreicht werden, dazu zwei, die fast bis zur Matura in unserer Klasse waren. Insgesamt 21 wollen sich Ende Juni 2025 in Zuoz treffen und ihrer Schule einen Jubiläumsbesuch abstatten.

Auf der Adressenjagd stellte sich die Frage, wer von unseren Lehrern wohl noch leben könnte... Ueli entwickelt besonderen Ehrgeiz, und von neun ausfindig gemachten Lehrern sagen fünf zu: Romedi Arquint (Religion), Max Baumann (Mathe C), Hansueli Baumgartner (Geschichte), Renato Orengo (Französisch), Jon Plouda (Turnen und Sport).

LYCEUM ALPINUM JETZT UND EINST

Am Freitagabend treffen sich einige zur Vorfeier im Ristorante Palmisano’s in La Punt. Tags drauf besammelt man sich am Mittag in der «Conda», bevor man sich auf den Schulweg macht, durchs Dorf und an der alten Mühle vorbei. Oliver Hartwright, der heutige Rektor, begrüsst die ganze Schar vor dem Arvenhaus, das jetzt Nadig-Haus heisst – zu Ehren des ehemaligen Rektors Adolf «Nuggel» Nadig.

Eine internationale Schule war das Lyceum von seiner Gründung an. Doch heute ist es noch weit internationaler, man wirbt um Schülerinnen und Schüler aus der ganzen Welt. Hartwright, deutsch-britischer Doppelbürger, kommt gerade von einer Akquisitionstour aus China zurück. Ein wichtiger Trumpf im Wettbewerb mit den Internatsschulen der ganzen Welt sei der Zweig des International Baccalaureate, das mit dem IB-Diplom abgeschlossen werden kann. Im Wettbewerb der exklusiven internationalen Schulen sind indes bezüglich Infrastruktur gewaltige Investitionen notwendig, um mithalten zu können. So wird das gesamte Kleinhaus gerade ausgehöhlt und von Grund auf modernisiert, von unseren alten Schulzimmern können wir leider keines besichtigen – ein Grund, später wieder zu kommen?

«QUI A EU CETTE IDÉE FOLLE»

Dafür nützen wir die Gunst der Stunde und stellen uns im Nadig-Haus vor dem ehemaligen Chemiezimmer ungefähr in derselben Formation auf wie 1975 (verstärkt um besagte fünf Lehrer). Dann geht es treppauf, treppab zu einem grosszügigen Zvieri im neuen Speisesaal. Doch davor singen wir unter der kundigen Leitung von Peter Appenzeller im Weissen Gang unserem Französischlehrer noch das Chanson, das er damals mit uns einstudierte und mit dem wir vor der ganzen Schule aufgetreten sind: «Qui a eu cette idée folle un jour d’inventer l’école» von France Gall. Wer hätte das gedacht: Constanza, unser Starlet von 1970, kann den ganzen Text noch auswendig!

Ein gemeinsames Abendessen in der Crusch Alva, dem einstigen Stammlokal unseres Lateinlehrers Peter «Cheese» Geiser, lässt den Tag ausklingen. Dabei gedenken wir unserer lieben Christine Alder, die viel zu früh von uns gehen musste.

Am Sonntag trifft man sich zu einer Wanderung bei St. Moritz und kehrt zum gemütlichen Abschluss bei Peppino’s neben der Olympiaschanze ein. An diesem strahlend schönen Juni-Wochenende in Zuoz wurden so viele Erinnerungen wach – und zugleich präsentierte sich die lebendige Zukunft unserer Schule.

Mit Fisch gestartet, mit Tennis, Cricket und Curry durch den Sommer

PESCHERIA

Es war ein besonderes erstes Halbjahr im Zuoz Club München. Zunächst ging es am 18.Februar gemeinsam zum Jahresauftakt mit 12 Old Boys & Girls in die Münchner Pescheria. Ein gemütliches, authentisches Fischlokal im Herzen Münchens. Unweit des Sendlinger Tors.

Mit dabei waren Vroni Stockmayer und Peter, Jacqueline Schwarzmann, Antje und Carlo Nedeltschev, Philipp Pferschy, Laura Lucia Wehner, Catherine Listmann, Anja Brankovic, Miri und Philipp Bächstädt und Frederik Schulte.

TENNIS

Im Juni packten Philipp Bächstädt, Nicolas Hübner, Maximilian Seil und (fast) Timm Oberwelland (musste krankheitsbedingt absagen) das Tennisfieber. Beim Film Tenniscup des Filmproduzenten Martin Krug ging es im Iphitos heiß her. Bei rund 30 Grad wurden die Old Boys über den Platz gescheucht und Abends ging es noch ins Roomers, um für den Verein Kinderlachen e.V. über 62.000€ zu sammeln. Philipp moderierte den Abend.

FIRMENTURNIER IM CRICKET

Am 28.Juni gab es das erste Firmenturnier im Cricket in Deutschland unter der Schirmherrschaft des bayerischen Innenministers, Joachim Herrmann. Der BLITZbee Corporate Cricket Cup war das Highlight der deutschen Cricket-Szene und wurde vom German Cricket Club e.V. organisiert. Hier spielten 48 Spieler in 4 Teams (unter anderem sponserte Max Seil mit seiner Seil Group ein Team – welches später sogar das Turnier gewonnen hat!). Mit dabei waren die Old Boys und Young Girls Severin Weiss (Präsident des Deutschen Cricket Bundes) Michael und Franziska Kuenburg (hat mit ihrer Firma FoodFor gesponsert und hatte ihren frisch Verlobten Max Hoyos im Schlepptau), Philipp Bächstädt (Organisator des Turniers), Martin Ruhland, Maximilian Plössl, Alexander Schwab, Stefanie und Nick Bächstädt, Tassilo Graf von Sandizell mit Faika und Heiner Weseloh.

Vom 15. bis 17.August geht es für den German Cricket Club ins schöne Kärnten. Sie spielen gegen den Cricket Club Velden, was den Regionalpräsidenten Michael Kuenburg, einen Ur-Kärntner, natürlich besonders freut. Falls Ihr die Zuoz Zeitung bis dahin in Händen haltet, kommt noch schnell vorbei. Ansonsten müsst Ihr mehr bei Social Media oder auf zuozclub.com vorbeischauen.

Some truly memorable events for the first part of the year!

The first half of the year was filled with joyful occasions, meaningful connections, and unforgettable celebrations within our Zuoz Club community.

We kicked off the season with a truly heartwarming event: the wedding of Alexandrine Frey and Christopher Reid. Their union was not only a beautiful celebration of love but also a joyful reunion of Zuoz friends and family. The civil ceremony took place at the Lausanne registry office, followed by a fantastic lunch at the Beau-Rivage Palace. It was a day to remember, and we wish the happy couple a lifetime of happiness and adventure!

Soon after, we had the great pleasure of celebrating a special milestone – Errki Tammivuori’s 79th birthday. The surprise party in a wine cellar by the lake, lovingly organised by his daughter Caroline, brought together family, longtime

friends, and warm memories. It was a fitting tribute to a man who has been a cornerstone of the Zuoz spirit for decades –and remains one of our most loyal and active fives players.

To round off the semester, we gathered for a charming Zuoz Club lunch on Lake Geneva. The breathtaking setting, perfect weather, and lively company made for a wonderful afternoon.

Le Salon du Livre 2025 in Geneva

We had the great pleasure of taking part in the Salon du Livre in Geneva, where Alexandrine Frey, wife of Christopher Reid, presented her book, Le jour où j’ai failli partir, based on her dramatic experience at the age of 28.

Alexandrine’s life, full of projects and dreams, was suddenly challenged by a ruptured aneurysm. She describes how she coped with the shock of this very serious diagnosis, thanks not only to an exceptional medical team, but even more so to her own determination and positive mindset. The unwavering support of her mother and closest friends also proved vital as she fought what seemed an impossible battle.

Miracles do happen, and Alexandrine’s message is clear: one must never give up and should always remain full of hope and optimism.

“La volonté de vivre fait vivre” wrote Alexandrine as a personal message to Caroline and myself – words that summarize both the book and its spirit beautifully. Well done, dear Alexandrine, for the positive messages you share with all your readers!

Spring Brunch in New York City

Wine:30 on April 26: A small but exquisite group of Alumni/ae gathered for a long brunch with very interesting discussions! Thank you for coming!

The weather cooperated, so we were able to stay outside on the patio. This time, most of the attendees were from our “core” group. Last year, we hardly knew where to put everyone, as so many people attended. This year, however, many of our “foreign student” alumni didn’t respond or come. I know the situation is understandably extremely stressful, but being with your Zuoz community – even just for a few hours – might help, at least a bit.

Once again, the restaurant offered excellent service, a nice variety of food and drinks, and welcome flexibility – much appreciated with our group of free spirits and our lastminute decisions to attend or cancel.

A special thank you to all of you for bringing cash, which made splitting the bill so much easier.

The famous and festive Holiday Cocktail will take place again in NYC at Ralph and Cornelia Heins’ private home in Manhattan this December. The exact date will be announced later.
