After not having been able to meet for nearly one year, we were thoroughly enchanted by Virginie’s hospitality, a magical view and wonderful togetherness.
What a joy it was to come together at Virginie’s house literally on the lake. Her house is so close to the water that the waves splash against the windows – an amazing setting! Next time we will all have a dip in the water!
Spoiled by a delicious dinner, laughter, animated discussions and fun plans for future activities together, we look forward to many more gatherings with celebrating, this year again, Thanksgiving at Alexandrine’s and Christopher’s new villa and the traditional Geneva Escalade at my home, to name just a few.

Thanksgiving in Crans, Vaud
A time when dragon flies make their last appearance of the year, when chestnuts fall to the ground along with acorns and fur cones; navigating through paths in the woods, we hear the rustle of our feet traversing the millions of fallen leaves of all shapes and shades of brown and yellow. This is autumn, time to reap the last of the harvests and fill the barns with the fruit of the land, preparing for the long cold winter. Yes, it is time to give thanks to the Almighty, and it is time to celebrate Thanksgiving.
The feast of Thanksgiving is an American tradition and dates back to the first autumns of the Pilgrims having arrived in the New World, escaping persecution from the various religious factions in the England and on the continent. They were people with strict Christian religious mores and they wished to practice their rituals and customs without persecution.
Ancestors of mine were amongst these early settlers and with this heritage in mind, we were summoned by the leadership of the Regionalgruppe to establish a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at our home. After a year of reprieve due to lockdowns in 2020, our doors opened again on Thursday 25 November for the Zuoz Club Suisse Romande Thanksgiving celebration. This was a special moment for Alexandrine and me, because it was also a housewarming party for our new home here in Crans, Vaud.
Amongst those present were Najia and Lancelot, Filippo, Roland, John and Chantal, Alexander, Virginie, Errki and Claude. A few of our traditional invitees were exceptionally encumbered and couldn’t make it, due to reasons out of their control.
Lancelot, an insider to New England tradition due to his graduate studies there, graciously stood up and addressed us all in his wonderful good humor, explaining the meaning of Thanksgiving and why the turkey had become part of the tradition. An important part of the original Thanksgiving merriment was the exchange of gifts between the indigenous population and the newcomers from afar. This was an occasion of peace, albeit short lived, between the puritans and the Natives.
The evening was one of good cheer and jollity. Everyone was committed to making the evening a memorable occasion. We thank you for your presence and hope to see you all, and many more of you, again at this occasion next year.
