Where Has the Time Gone? How Lviv has Changed Since Hosting EURO 2012 As one of our features this month looks forward to how Ukraine will fare at next month’s EURO 2016 football championship in France, it seems to be an appropriate time to also look back on the four years since Lviv welcomed the continent during its turn as a host city of EURO 2012. It sure doesn’t seem like that long ago since hordes of German, Dutch, and Portuguese fans fell in love with the enchanting charm of the Western Ukrainian capital. I, for one, have not forgotten the look of amazement on the faces of Leopolitans at the idea that Western Ukrainians would travel to Ukraine (!) just to watch a football match. Nor will I forget the pride the nation felt after Ukraine rallied for a 2:1 victory over Sweden in its opening match or the sense of accomplishment of impressing intrepid Europeans with a job well done of hosting one of the continent’s prestigious sporting events. Oh, the future seemed so bright just four years ago…

violently tried to remove the people from Kyiv’s Maidan, much of the country rose up in defiance. A few months later, after the deaths of over 100 Ukrainian men and women, the former President fled to Russia and again – briefly – the country looked forward a path to Europe. Just days after his ouster, the Russian military invaded Crimea and later helped foment counterrevolutions in the Eastern oblasts of Luhansk and Donetsk. Thousands more Ukrainians perished and Ukraine’s European path once again looked in jeopardy. Perhaps no place in Ukraine more vividly highlights this dark episode than fellow EURO 2012 host Donetsk. The airport in Donetsk – newly renovated not even two years earlier for Europe’s celebration of football – became a symbol of the fight of the Ukrainian people, and the hope for a better future lost during the ongoing war.

A City Reborn

The Country Emerges

The city was left with a positive glow following the event. There was a sparkling new stadium, four-star hotels and, finally, a modern airport. Highways to the city were brought to, more or less, a European standard. English dotted downtown tourism signs, popular club and restaurant menus, and even the Soviet-era tramways. The train station was renovated, as were sidewalks, parks, and other infrastructure. More than that, the many first-time visitors to our city were left with an indelible impression of a world-class – and still undiscovered – gem of a city right in their own European backyard. The prospect of business and tourism dollars flashed in the eyes of business leaders and politicians right across Western Ukraine. The promise of a better future beckoned. Lviv was chosen as a host city for the European basketball championships. The newfound confidence even led leaders to put forward an audacious bid to host the world during the 2022 Winter Olympics. And then everything changed.

In spite of all the turmoil that has shaken the country since the protests erupted not even 18 months after EURO 2012, the country has shown signs of improvement. Reform – the main goal of the tens of thousands of EuroMaidan protesters – has been slow, but has also seen progress. A new, American-style police service was launched last year and the EU has recognised the efforts made by the post-Maidan government by promising Ukrainians visa-free travel in the Schengen Zone by the end of the year. A new Ukrainian patriotism has emerged, with cities from Mykolaiv to Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk to Kirovohrad and many in between proudly sporting the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag on bridges, water towers, and former Lenin monuments right across the land. EURO 2016 will provide an opportunity for Ukrainian fans to showcase this new patriotism. And while the sense of optimism that surrounded the tournament when Lviv hosted the continent just four years ago has abated, there remains reason to believe that a new optimism – one grounded in sustainability – may soon be spreading its roots.

HOSTS NO MORE – CAN UKRAINE ROAR? Ukraine’s EURO 2016 Preview

very four years a spectacle rolls through Europe – and it’s not of the EuroVision kind. UEFA’s EURO tournament is back and better than ever as it now features 24 of best teams the continent has to offer. Ukrainian football fans know just what’s in store for France, as they remember the excitement of having fans from across Europe visit the country four years ago for EURO 2012. Unlike four years ago, when the team gained automatic qualification for the tournament as host, this time the Blue-Yellows qualified the hard way, and in the process exorcised demons of qualification past. But just like four years ago, when Lviv was one of four Ukrainian host cities, Lviv once again played a big role in the Ukrainian national football team. The city hosted four qualification games – including the all-important 2:0 playoff victory over Slovenia – that saw the team move its all-time record in the city to a sparkling 12 wins and 2 draws in 14 games. The team has been dominant in the Western Ukrainian capital, having never dropped a game and scoring 21 goals along the way, compared to conceding just 3. Qualification seems like a long time ago now, and as the team gets set to face off against the national squads of Germany, Northern Ireland, and rival Poland in France this summer, Lviv Today has everything you need to follow the boys in blue and yellow along the way.

FRANCE 2016: THE MORE THE MERRIER While most Ukrainians won’t need any primer of what the EURO Championships are all about after mingling with fans from across Europe at stadiums, in Fan Zones, and in restaurants, pubs and parks across the country four years ago, there are some differences between this tournament and last. The 15th running of this tournament will feature 24 teams for the first time, up from the 16 that have been featured in tournaments since 1996. This meant that a number of non-traditional teams gained qualification for a major tournament, including: teams that haven’t qualified in a very long time such as Hungary (first since 1972) and Belgium (first since hosting in 2000); teams that have never qualified except as host, including Ukraine (2012) and Austria (2008); teams that have never qualified for the EUROs that have featured in the World Cup before, such as Northern Ireland, Slovakia, and Wales; and teams that have never played in a major competition before, like Albania and Iceland. It also means that more teams will make the playoffs in France, as the top two from each of the six groups automatically qualify, along with the top four 3rd-place teams. This should bode well for our Ukrainian boys, as they were drawn into a difficult group alongside favourites Germany, qualifying group winners Northern Ireland, and offensive juggernaut Poland. Ten cities across France will host fixtures, including: Paris, Lille, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux, Marseille, Lens, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse and, of course, the Stade de

France in St. Denis, which will host the finals. The Ukrainian team will be based in Southern France with their base camp in Aix-en-Provence. The team opens the tournament on June 12th in Lille against Germany, before returning south to play Northern Ireland in Lyon on June 16th and Poland in Marseille on June 21st. The playoffs will begin on June 25th and are expected to feature the traditional European powerhouses, including Spain, Germany, England, France, and Italy. The finals will take place in the grand Stade de France on July 10th.

SO YOU WANT TO PLAY FOR UKRAINE? National team halfback Edmar only became a Ukrainian citizen back in 2011 after marrying a girl from Simferopol. While he gained the right to play for the national team, he also took on the responsibilities of Ukrainian citizenship – including getting drafted to the army! His club was able to get him a reprieve from military service for his adopted country.

UKRAINIAN TEAM PREVIEW: SIXTH TIME A CHARM Long-time fans of Ukrainian football are well aware of just how difficult it is to qualify for a top-level international competition. Since independence, the Ukrainian team has played in 10 qualification cycles, but has only qualified for the 2006 World Cup – where they went on a scintillating run to the quarterfinals with wins over Tunisia, Saudia Arabia, and Switzerland. Of those other 9 cycles, Ukraine has made it to the home-and-away playoff round a total of 6 times (!). After years of demoralising setbacks, including in 2000 when they conceded to Slovenia with just 12 minutes remaining to be denied qualification for EURO 2000, in 2010 losing in Donetsk to Greece to miss out on the 2010 World Cup, and in 2014 when the team blew a 2:0 lead in the second game to France to go down 2:3 on aggregate and miss out on the 2014 World Cup. EURO 2016 qualification looked no easier, as the team was drawn against World and European champions Spain and a tricky, up-and-coming Slovakian squad. The team finished 3rd and this time managed to get past their home-and-away playoff demons by defeating Slovenia 3:1 in the playoff, including a dominant 2:0 display at Arena Lviv. With the qualification monkey off their back, Ukraine goes into France in an underdog position in a difficult Group C.

DID YOU KNOW? The Soviet team that lost the 1988 EURO final to the Netherlands was little more than a Ukrainian all-star squad? Led by legendary Dynamo Kyiv head coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi and prolific striker Oleh Protasov, the team featured 13 Ukrainians (out of 21 players) including 11 (!) from Dynamo.

GERMANY: CAN THEY BE STOPPED? Rank: #2 All-Time Record vs. Ukraine: 2 W, 0 L, 3 D, 10 GF, 5 GA Reigning World Cup champions. 3-time EURO champions. #2-ranked squad in the world. NORTHERN IRELAND: ARE THEY FOR REAL? Rank: #46 All-Time Record vs. Ukraine: 0 W, 2 L, 2 D, 1 GF, 3 GA Not many saw Northern Ireland coming out on top of their qualifying group; not only had they never qualified for the EUROs, the last time they qualified for the World Cup was back when E.T. had just become a household name and Eye of the Tiger ruled the airwaves (1982). In the process, the #48-ranked Northern Irish became the lowest-seeded team ever to top a EURO qualifying group. This Cinderella story couldn’t have happened without the efforts of forward Kyle Lafferty and captain Steven Davis. Northern Ireland will look to steal a game from one of the higher-ranked teams to sneak into the playoffs, but with no expectations and a solid side, teams should not take them lightly either. Players to watch: Lafferty, Davis, and GK Roy Carroll. Schedule: June 12th vs. Poland, June 16th vs. Ukraine, June 21st vs. Germany Prediction: 4th in Group C

GROUP C PREVIEW: DEFENCE IS THE BEST OFFENCE It is said that defence wins championships; in Ukraine’s case this summer, that old adage is doubly important. Only Romania (2), England, and Spain (3) conceded fewer goals than Ukraine (4) throughout the 10-match qualification process. On the other hand, Group C rivals Poland (33) and Germany (24) finished 1st and 3rd in scoring throughout the process. Poland’s Robert Lewandoski topped all scorers and equalled a EURO qualifying record in the process with 13 goals in 10 games, while Germany’s Thomas Müller finished not far behind in 3rd with 9 markers. To advance, Ukraine will need to keep these two potent offences in check and capitalise on their own chances. In this regard, the team will look to the offensive prowess of Dynamo Kyiv forward Andriy Yarmolenko, who tallied 6 times in qualifying, and former Dnipro wing and current Sevilla star Yevhen Konoplyanka. The team could also feature up to 3 players with connections to Lviv region – Dynamo’s Mykola Morozyuk, Vorskla’s Artem Hromov, and Karpaty Lviv’s-own Pavlo Ksyonz. Captain Anatoliy Timoshuk, who has seen over 140 caps since joining the national team back in 2000 – will once again provide the leadership for the Ukrainian side.

POLAND: IS IT THEIR TURN TO SHINE? Rank: #18 All-Time Record vs. Ukraine: 2 W, 3 L, 2 D, 8 GF, 9 GA Not since the early 80s, when they finished 3rd at the 1982 World Cup, have the Poles had a reason to believe that they could succeed in top-level football. Thanks to the name Robert Lewandowski, that is not the case this summer. The lanky striker is considered to be among the purest strikers in the world, and after defeating the powerful Germans in qualifying, this Polish team will fancy their chances against any team in the tournament. Poland could just as easily finish 3rd in this group as to win it, so the games against Germany and Ukraine will be as

Now that they have got the qualifying monkey off their backs, the Ukrainians will look to surprise Europe this summer. Many oddsmakers have our boys pegged to finish 3rd in the group, thanks to the potent offences of frontrunners Germany and Poland. That, however, disregards how tidy the Ukrainian defenders have kept the sheets over the past few years. Ukraine will need to continue to stay strong at the back and show moments of creativity up front if they hope to make a run in France. The team will be content with making the playoffs, but have the capacity of a run to the quarter-finals, or – if the football gods shine down on them – even the semi-finals. They will need Yarmolenko to continue his fine form, and hope for someone else to step up offensively. In this regard, keep your eye on former Shakhtar striker Yevhen Seleznyov. Players to watch: Yarmolenko, Konoplyanka, and Seleznyov. Prediction: 2nd in Group C

OE is the most successful and celebrated post-Soviet rock band in all of the CIS and Eastern Europe with over one million CDs sold in Ukraine and Russia. Formed in Lviv in the heady days of Ukrainian independence in 1994, the band released their first album in 1998 and was recognised for Breakthrough of the Year and Best Song (Where, There is No Us) at the 1999 Taurus Games festival. They were selected to be the face of Pepsi in Ukraine in 2001 after the company discovered that they were the overwhelming choice (nearly 90%) of the under-21 demographic. Group frontman and living legend Svyatoslav Vakarchuk – one of only two members that still remains from the original crew – was designated as a UN Goodwill Ambassador

In 2012, the group deservedly received the YUNA Award as Best Band in Ukraine over the past 20 years. Many fans remember vividly their concert in December 2013, when OE played for tens of thousands of protesters on the Maidan in Kyiv. The group has long been known for its activist bent, advocating for peace and democracy as well as other forms of self-determination. LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX RETURNS! June 3rd–5th Lviv has a long and proud motoring heritage and that will be put on show this June when the Leopolis Grand Prix – an international festival of vintage cars – returns to the city. You might be unaware that back in 1930, before the city was even part of Ukraine, an international Grand Prix was held here. To put that into perspective, the internationally-renowned Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo

was only in its second year at the time! The first closed-circuit racing was organised on a track that is still known as the ‘Lviv Triangle’, which runs from Vitovskoho (formerly Pelchyńska) to I. Franko (Sw. Zofji) to Stryjska and Maidan Heroes (Abramowiczów-Kadecka). The track was known to be one of the most complicated in Europe due both to its considerable elevation and to its cobblestone

surface. Teams from across Europe took part in the “Lviv Triangle” event. Unfortunately, Grand Prix racing in Lviv was short lived as the event had to be cancelled in 1934 due to the economic and political crises of the time. Lviv’s GP was resurrected by the efforts of “ZAZ-Kozak”, the Zaporozhets automobile club for ZAZ-965 owners. The Leopolis Grand Prix includes not only the races around the “Lviv

Triangle”, but also the historic rally race outside the city. The festival offers plenty of interesting events, including a classic car show and a parade of heritage vehicles along the Lviv’s central streets. LVIV – MONTE CARLO ELECTRIC MARATHON 2016 May 22nd in the City Centre Leopolitans have another reason to be proud of their city’s racing heritage this summer as Lviv was selected as the starting point for the 5th Electric Marathon. This annual sports event is organised under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco in an effort to bring attention to environmental protection and cultural development. The race is the most famous event in EV (electric vehicle) racing and will feature many of the world’s most illustrious electric cars – not only modern Teslas and Nissan Leafs, but also retrofitted Soviet-made machines! Last year’s race ran from Monaco to Kyiv, while this year’s event will see the start ceremony in Lviv on May 22nd with the cars crossing the finish line in Monaco on June 3rd. K&K SYMPHONIKER IN CONCERT May 24th, 19:00 at the S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall (7 Chaykovskoho St.) Mattias Georg Kendlinger, founder of the K&K Philharmoniker symphony orchestra, is proud to present to Leopolitans and guests of the city his second privately funded orchestra on May 24th – the K&K Symphoniker. He took the decision to create a second orchestra to meet the growing demand in Europe for symphony orchestras and to work on even larger musical projects in cooperation with his K&K Philharmoniker. After seeing his 17-year-old son Maximilian rehearse with orchestra students at the Lviv National Music Academy, Kendlinger was encouraged to entrust his son with the musical direction of the new orchestra. Maximilian plays accordion and percussion and has been taught piano by Mag. Brigitte Zimmermann at Tiroler Landesmusikschule since 2010. He has also been active in tour organisation for the Da Capo Austria group. The K&K Symphoniker is under the management of Da Capo Austria and initially features 50 musicians. The company plans to give its first concerts in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and France in January 2017. Lviv’s signature Opera & Ballet Theatre is pleased to host one of Ukraine’s most popular alternative rock/dance groups – Kharkiv’s TNMK – on May 24th. Tanok na Maidani Kongo (TNMK, meaning Dance on the Square in Congo) is an established Ukrainian hip-hop/rock group founded in the early 90s by Oleh Mykhailuta (Fahot) and Oleksandr Sidorenko (Fozzi). The group’s sound is a unique mixture of hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. They also use real instruments – not only on their albums, but in their live shows as well – an unusual feature in the hip-hop genre. Hailing from Russian-speaking Kharkiv, TNMK and Fahot have helped turn that city into a hotbed of Ukrainian-language hip-hop. From its inception,

the band has had a difficult time being taken seriously and even their home city occasionally tried to censor the band’s lyrics and antics. That all changed in 1997 when the band took first prize at Ukraine’s prestigious Chervona Ruta festival competition with its smash single Zroby Meni Hip-Hop (Make Hip-Hop For Me). Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city won’t want to miss out on two concerts by Olesya Kirichuk at Lviv’s trendy Picasso nightclub on May 20th and 21st. Retro music will be on display, as the talented songstress is set to share retro songs by Ukrainian artists Anatoly Kos-Anatolsky, Bohdan Veselovsky, and Myroslav Skoryk – collectively known as the “Fathers of Ukrainian Pop Music”. It was just last year when Olesya Kirichuk took the top prize in Ukraine’s International Festival of Bohdan Veselovsky. It was Veselovsky that launched the era of Ukrainian retro or Lviv retro music, including the first Ukrainian jazz music (Yabtso Jazz) in 1931. His rich musical heritage, which spans more than 130 songs and 30 LPs, is notable for being the first to use Ukrainian language in the dance music genre. The programme will also include a 20-minute film created in the retro style that highlights what the city was like in the 1930s. Kirichuk stars in the movie, along with several artists from Lviv’s famed Mariya Zankovetska Drama Theatre. To add even more spice to these colourful retro concerts, Iryna Mazur’s Zhyttya Ballet will perform some splendid dance numbers. Kirichuk is also set to introduce her latest video – V Zelenomy Haiyu (In Green Grove) – which was sound-produced by none other than ROCK-H frontman Victor Yantso. KIZOMBA FEST May 20–22, Lviv’s Gratsiya Sport Complex (36 Schyretska St.) Kizomba is the result of an evolution, as it describes both the musical style and the dance style. Kizomba is an Angolan word that means “party”, and while in the 1950s the Angolan expression “Kizombadas” referred to a big party, there is no known link with the dance or the music as we know it today. Apart from Angola, Kizomba dance and music is performed in other Portuguese-speaking countries and its popularity has grown rapidly in the Western world. Nowadays Kizomba can be found in countries such as UK, France, Spain, and the USA, as well as Eastern European countries like Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. IVAN DORN’S RANDORN TOUR COMES TO LVIV June 17th, 19:00 on the territory of Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) Ukrainian superstar singer and TV personality Ivan Dorn is bringing his Randorn 2016 tour to Lviv with a special performance on the territory of Arena Lviv on June 17th. Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Dorn and his family relocated to Slavutich, Ukraine after his father took a job at the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant. While he studied both sports and piano, it was his voice that got him noticed at a very young age. At just 6 years old, his mother took him to festivals, thereby launching his long and successful career. Dorn is noted for experimenting with different sounds and styles, especially with rap, funk, neo-disco, and house. Dorn released several songs in 2008, including his popular Stytsamen, Curlers, and Northern Lights and in 2010 shot to fame after winning the Star + Star entertainment show along with Vasilisa Frolova. His success saw him land a co-hosting gig with the show the next season before releasing his mega-hit

Co’N’Dorn album in 2012. He has since branched out into a film career, landing roles in the films How to Find the Ideal and Kyiv, I Love You. Dorn ran into trouble with a member of St. Petersburg city council (Vitali Milonov – United Russia) after singing Tanets Pingvina in Ukrainian at the Novaya Volna song contest while performing in a T-Shirt featuring the Ukrainian coat of arms. The politician tried to have the superstar banned from radio and television and from performing in Russia, but the outrage eventually died down and Dorn toured Russia this spring. His Randorn Tour concerts straddle the line between pop and underground and are filled with an intelligent sense of lyrical humour and unique rhythmic arrangements. The Children’s KinoFest is an annual international film festival aimed at children and teenagers that returns for a second time this year. This festival will run in cities across Ukraine, including: Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Mariupol, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Vinnytsia, and of course, right here in Lviv from May 27th to June 5th. This year’s programme includes the following films: Hungary’s adventure-drama Mancs; France’s animated fantasy Phantom Boy; Denmark’s animated Cykelmyggen og Minibillen; the Netherlands’ family drama Het Leven Volgens Nino; Sweden’s musical drama Vi är Bäst!; Norway’s adventure Operasjon Arktis; and Germany’s story of a young girl’s life in the Swiss Alps – Heidi. Before each screening, the audience will be given special voting forms to be filled in and returned to festival reps before leaving. Those forms will help organisers choose the festival’s winning entry, which will be announced on June 5th at 17:00 in Kyiv. The festival will also include a special retrospective of Aardman Studio’s most popular cartoons, as well as a series of short films dedicated to the beauty and variety of Ukraine. LVIV MEDIA FORUM May 26–28 at Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) The popular Lviv Media Forum, which puts an emphasis on the role of the media in crisis events in Ukraine and around the world, will return to Lviv on May 26-28. This year’s fourth anniversary event is expected to attract more than 800 journalists, bloggers, experts, analysts, media managers, and students. The program is designed to discuss the latest trends in world media and the potential of Ukrainian media in a competitive global environment. Some of this year’s topics include: “What kind of public broadcasting does Ukraine need”; Films as media: how the industry of documentaries works”; and “The end of secrecy: how media makes the world transparent”. Leading experts from international publications and think tanks will bring their insights to discussions on the development of the media industry – new technologies, new journalistic standards and requirements, and the survival of quality journalism in a highly competitive market. SOCIETY LVIV TURNS 760! Lviv celebrated its 760th anniversary in style with a series of festivities throughout the May 6-9 holiday. Leopolitans and guests of the city had the chance to take in public concerts and street performances, sports events, exhibitions, cultural programs, holiday fairs, and much more! The celebrations started with special services in most of the city’s temples and churches. Locals honoured the memory of the patron saint of Lviv – St. Yuriy (St. George). An impressive street parade, replete with knights on horseback, spectacular theatrical performances, and actors portraying King Lev and Queen Constance marched through the city centre. Local youngsters got into the spirit as well, hosting a special flash mob to mark the historic event. Students lined up in Rynok Square to form the words: ‘Lviv, I Love You’ in Ukrainian before releasing 1000 blue and yellow balloons into the sky. Lviv City Council marked the event by having Mayor Andriy Sadovyi hand out diplomas and awards of honour to those that have contributed to the development of the city. Some of those recognised include: National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine academic Ihor Yukhnovskyi as an Honourable Leopolitan; the Kupchynsky family as a Noble Family of Lviv; doctor of historical sciences and publicist Yaroslav Hrytsak with the Order of the Lion; and Ukrainian football coaching legend Myron Markevych as Leopolitan of the Year. “Leopolitan of the Year” – Myron Markevych

ЛЬВІВ ВІДСВЯТКУВАВ 760 РОКІВ Цього року Львів відсвяткував 760 років як завжди цікавою програмою святкових заходів, що тривали протягом 6-9 травня. У програмі не бракувало концертів під відкритим небом і вуличних виступів різних музичних колективів; були тут і спортивні заходи, і виставки, і різноманітні культурні ініціативи, святкові ярмарки та багато іншого. Покровителем міста вважається св. Георгій (по львівськи – Юрій) тож у багатьох храмах відбулась урочиста служба на його честь. Вулицями міста пройшов парад лицарів на конях; актори львівських театрів виступали в ролях короля Лева і королеви Констанції та їх барвистого почту. На площі Ринок сотні молодих львів’ян організували спеціальний флеш-моб з нагоди роковин міста: вони вишикувалися, утворюючи напис "Львів. Я тебе люблю" українською мовою. Потім вони випустили в повітря тисячі синіх і жовтих повітряних кульок. На честь ювілею міста 7 травня у Львівській міській раді відбулось спеціальне засідання, на якому мер міста Андрій Садовий вручив подяки, дипломи та почесні нагороди за видатний внесок у розвиток міста. Академік Національної академії наук України, Герой України Ігор Юхновський отримав звання "Почесного львів’янина", члени сім'ї Купчинських були відзначені в категорії "Шляхетна львівська родина", а український футбольний тренер Мирон Маркевич став "Львівянином року". Також “Орден Лева” був присуджений публіцисту, доктору історичних наук Ярославу Грицаку.

ОБЛИВАНИЙ ПОНЕДІЛОК

Leopolitans once again got wet and wild on May 2nd for the one-of-a-kind post-Easter celebration of Wet Monday. Hundreds of Leopolitan teens took to Rynok Square to douse each other in water as part of the celebrations. The tradition is part of both the Greek Catholic and Orthodox Easter celebrations. Historically, this pagan practice was considered a symbol of purification in connection with the coming of spring. On Wet Monday, boys and men armed with bottles and buckets of water chase after girls and splash them from head to toe. According to the original custom, the most beautiful girl in the village would be the wettest, but nowadays boys just splash any girl they see. At one point, the tradition got so out of hand that boys threw buckets of water at girls through their car windows! With the current water shortage the world faces right now, some say this is a terrible waste of water. But the boys with the water bottles wouldn’t dream of abandoning this ancient tradition – just look at those happy faces!

У понеділок 2 травня сотні дівчат і хлопців вийшли на площу Ринок, щоб за відсвяткувати "Обливаний понеділок" та добряче намочити один одного. Традиція є частиною свят як у греко-католицькому так і в православному обряді. Історично так склалося, що цей язичницький звичай вважався символом очищення у зв'язку з приходом весни. У цей день молоді й часом, не дуже, чоловіки, озброєні пляшками та відрами з водою ганяються за дівчатами на вулицях, щоб оббризкати їх з голови до ніг. За давнім звичаєм, найкрасивіша дівчина в селі була наймокрішою, але сьогодні хлопчаки обливають без розбору усіх дівчат, яких побачать. Часом обливальники перебирали міру, заливаючи водою вікна автомобілів та трамваїв, що проїздили поруч. За нинішньої напруженої ситуації з водою в місті, дехто вважає, що це просто марнотратство. Але хлопчаки, що гасають з пляшками води в руках, нізащо б не відмовились від цієї давньої традиції - достатньо побачити їх щасливі обличчя!

BATYARS ON BICYCLES To mark Lviv’s ‘City Day’, many Leopolitans chose to dive into the style and atmosphere of the Batyars to take part in Lviv’s 3rd annual retro bike ride – Batyars on Bicycles. The event is organised by the Mozaika NGO and Lviv’s Department of Youth, Family, and Sports to pay tribute to the city’s past and, in particular, the Batyar culture that used to flourish in the city. Participants cycled throughout the city dressed in retro outfits from the interwar period. Traditionally, the majority of the event’s participants were girls in creative and charming outfits.

Традиційно захід спільно організували громадська організація "Мозаїка" і Департамент у справах молоді, сім'ї та спорту Львівської міської ради. Організатори заходу таким чином хотіли віддати данину пошани минулому славетного міста Львова і такому культурному феномену, як "батярство", що був поширений в місті на початку XX століття. Традиційно, більшу і кращу частину учасників заходу складали дівчата у барвистих і стильних строях.

BALLET-FEST CHOREOGRAPHY FESTIVAL

Lviv’s National Academic Opera & Ballet Theatre was proud to play host to the Ballet-Fest Choreography Festival gala-concert on April 17th. The festival began at the beginning of the year and consisted of several stages where different choreographers and dancers were selected. Dancers from the Lviv Theatre of Opera & Ballet performed the ballets and the choreography was judged by an all-star jury that featured the likes of Italy’s Nazionale Acsi Danza Art Director Dino Carano, Art Director at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre Igor Khramov, and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Oleksandr Plakhotnyuk. The jury selected Kyiv’s Artem Shoshin for the Grand Prix, while Iryna Mikhalchuk (1st place), Nadiya Kitayeva (2nd place), and Rivne’s Roksana Gorbachuk and Andriy Skotskyi (3rd place) were also recognised for their sensational talents. In addition, a special diploma was awarded to Ksenya Ivanenko for Most Interesting Choreographic Plot. Congratulations to all the winners!

У приміщенні Львівського національного академічного театру 17 квітня відбувся гала-концерт конкурсу хореографів "Балет-Фест". Фестиваль стартував на початку року і складався з декількох етапів, де були відібрані найкращі хореографи й танцюристи. Постановки у виконанні артистів Львівського театру опери та балету оцінювало солідне журі, до якого входили, зокрема, арт-директор Acsi Danza з Італії Діно Карано, художній керівник Львівського театру опери та балету Ігор Храмов і заслужений артист України Олександр Плахотнюк. Журі присудило Гран-прі Артему Шошіну з Києва, Ірині Михальчук - 1 місце, Надії Китаєвій - 2 місце, і Роксані Горбачук та Андрієві Скотському з Рівного - 3 місце за їх сенсаційні таланти. The inner yard of Lviv City Council on Rynok Square once again played host to the popular Flugery Lvova International Jazz & Folk Music Festival from May 6-9. Launched in 2003, the event has become a staple on Lviv’s cultural calendar and this year’s event marked a continuation of the Lviv Month in Wroclaw project. Leopolitans and guests of the city were delighted by the performances of 20 bands from Ukraine, Europe, and North America, including the charismatic Rykarda Parasol Project that showcased American energy and Polish jazz traditions. A new partnership between famed Crimean Tatar jazz group Usein Bekirob Band and Prykarpathian vocalist Ivanka Chervynska premiered at the festival, while Leopolitan music lovers were charmed by the oriental vibes of Iranian folk wind virtuoso Amir Shahsar. The festival’s final day was dedicated to Wroclaw – a European City of Culture in 2016 – and featured a joint performance by Ukrainian writer, poet, and essayist Yurii Andrukhovych and the Karbido band.

Вже традиційно на початку травня, а саме 6-9 числа, на внутрішньому подвір’ї львівської Ратуші відбувся Міжнародний етно–джазовий фестиваль “Флюгери Львова”. Вперше він пройшов у 2003 році і проводиться вже в 14-й раз. Цього року фестиваль став продовженням культурного проекту “Місяць Львова у Вроцлаві" і порадував львів’ян і гостей міста прекрасною можливістю насолодитися виступами двох десятків музичних груп і музикантів з України , Польщі, Ізраїлю, Ірану, Італії, США та Азербайджану. Серед найяскравіших виступів варто відзначити одного з хедлайнерів заходу харизматичний гурт "Rykarda Parasol Project", що продемонстрував поєднання американської енергії і польських джазових традицій. На фестивалі також відбулась прем'єра спільного проекту кримськотатарського джазоркестру "Усейн Бекіров Бенд" та Іванки Червінської, вокалістки з Прикарпаття. А ще слухачі були просто зачаровані східною музикою у виконанні іранського віртуоза гри на народних духових інструментах Аміра Шахсара. Останній день фестивалю, 9 травня був присвячений Вроцлаву, який оголошений Європейським містом культури 2016 року, і відзначився спільним проектом українського прозаїка, поета, есеїста і перекладача Юрія Андруховича і гурту "Карбідо".

НОВИЙ ПРЕМЄР-МІНІСТР ВІДВІДАВ ЛЬВІВ Прем'єр-міністр України Володимир Гройсман приїхав до Львова 7 травня, щоб зустрітися з місцевими чиновниками і обговорити з ними проблеми митної служби Львівщини. В рамках поїздки прем'єр також відвідав контрольно-пропускний пункт Краковец на кордоні і дав митникам три місяці, щоб навести порядок у своєму господарстві. Володимир Гройсман також привітав львів’ян з 760 ювілеєм міста і підкреслив, що політика уряду повинна бути спрямована до людей і спільнот, яке це демонструє приклад міста. Після офіційної частини прем'єр-міністр разом з мером Львова Андрієм Садовим та головою Львівської обласної державної адміністрації Олегом Синюткою прогулявся центром міста і почастувався у відомій львівській кав'ярні "Світ кави".

Newly appointed Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodomyr Groysman was in Lviv on May 7th to meet with local officials to discuss problems at the Lviv customs service. As part of his schedule, he also visited a border checkpoint Krakowiec and gave customs officials three months to fix the issues. The new Prime Minister also congratulated Leopolitans on the 760th anniversary of the city and stressed that government policy should be focused on the person and the community. After the official part of the celebration, he joined Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and Lviv Regional Administration Head Oleh Sinyutka for a walk through Lviv’s historic city centre before sitting down to enjoy some of Lviv’s famous coffee at the city’s celebrated Svit Kavy café.

LVIV’S SPRING BUSINESS FORUM Arena Lviv’s sparkling conference hall was the stage for Lviv’s long-established Spring Business Forum, which took place on April 15th. This year’s event was organised by the HD Partners Legal Company around the theme of “Changing the Trajectory of Development: New Strategies, Instruments, and Markets”. The forum prides itself on being a non-profit, apolitical event aimed at improving the business environment in Ukraine. It was officially opened with addresses by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, Head of Lviv State Administration Oleg Synyutka, and Managing Partner at HD Partners Volodymyr Glaschenkov. The 150+ participants included government and public service representatives, leading banks and financial institutions, and entrepreneurs. They had the opportunity to discuss current strategies, techniques, and regional development projects with potential investors. Some of the key issues addressed in the discussion panels included: “Economic Development Trends 2016-2020”, “The Financial Sector: Status & Prospects”, and “Entering New Markets: Stories of Success”. One of the most popular sessions was the panel dedicated to Lviv – “Rethinking the Paradigm of the City” – which featured speeches by Mark Zarkhin of the Kumpel Group and Andrew Bulakh, Managing Partner at Deloitte in Ukraine. There were a number of highly-anticipated speakers at the forum – both those from Ukraine and abroad – including: Oleg Malkin, the CEO of the new generation financial social network WIDE.Up; Jacek Austen, Chairman of the IC PZU Ukraine from 2007-2011 and expert in restructuring, investment, and agricultural complex development; Jacek Kluczkowski, Poland’s former Ambassador to Ukraine (2005-2010) and Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan (2010-2014); and Bortosz Musyalovych, the Head of Trade & Investment Promotion at the Polish Embassy in Kyiv. Perhaps the most anticipated speech was from Jorge Garcia, the CEO at Fujikura Automotive Lviv, who had just opened a Fujikura factory near Lviv on April 14th in the presence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Shigeki Sumi.

Футболісти донецького "Шахтаря", який вже вважається майже львівським, не виправдали сподівань своїх уболівальників вдруге здобути титул чемпіона Ліги Європи, програвши минулого місяця на своєму полі дворазовому чемпіону, іспанській команді "Севілья". Гірники вийшли до півфіналу Ліги Європи, перемігши команду "Брага" з Португалії з рахунком 4:0 на "Арені Львів" у кінці квітня. Українська команда вже перемогла бельгійський "Андерлехт" та німецький "Шальке" після того, як вибула до другого ешелону клубного турніру, зайнявши 3 місце у своїй групі Ліги чемпіонів після "Реалу" Мадрид і "Сен-Жермен" Париж. Помаранчево-чорні завжди мали жорсткі протистояння з іспанцями, які здобували чемпіонський титул в Лізі Європи 4 рази за останні 10 років - у тому числі у двох останніх - але вони почали добре в матчі у Львові. У першому таймі донеччани вели перед – два голи забили Марлос і Тарас Степананко і на перерву команди пішли з рахунком 2:1. Іспанці вдало реалізували пенальті наприкінці гри і повернулись додому з двома цінними голами на виїзді. У матчі-відповіді на полі "Севільї" "Шахтар" грав відважно, завершивши першу половину з рахунком 1:1, але врештірешт поступився дворазовому чемпіону світу із загальним рахунком 3:5. Між цими двома матчами "Шахтар" здобув переконливу перемогу в поєдинку проти "Динамо" Київ на "Арені Львів", з рахунком 3:0. Lviv’s adopted football stars – Shakhtar Donetsk – fell short in their bid to claim a second Europa League title in 7 seasons after dropping a hard fought home-and-away series with Spain’s twotime defending champion Sevilla last month. The Miners made it through to the Europa League semi-finals after dispatching Portuguese giants Braga with a scintillating 4:0 demolition at Arena Lviv in late April. The displaced Eastern Ukrainian team had already handled Belgium’s Anderlecht and Germany’s Schalke after dropping to Europe’s second-tier club tournament after finishing 3rd in their Champions League group behind Real Madrid and Paris St. Germain. The boys in orange and black were always going to be in tough against the Spanish side that has taken the Europa League title 4 times in the last 10 years – including the last two competitions – but

they started out well in the opening match in Lviv. Markers by Marlos and Taras Stepanenko in a dominant first half had the team up 2:1 going into the second half. Sevilla was able to match on a late penalty and returned home with two valuable away goals. Shakhtar played valiantly in the Spanish river port city, drawing level on a late first half marker by Eduardo, but ultimately fell to the two-time defending champions 3:5 after conceding twice in the later stages. In between those two matches, Shakhtar put on a dominant performance against Dynamo Kyiv at Arena Lviv, knocking off the Ukrainian Premier League leaders 3:0 while resting several stars for the penultimate Europa League encounter. May saw some of Ukraine’s hottest speedsters scorch into the Lviv Region town of Chervonograd for the second round of the Individual Open National Championship. Chervonograd was selected as the host this year as its beautiful Girnyk racetrack celebrates its 60th anniversary. The Girnyk is one of the few tracks in Ukraine that meets European standards for lighting, track width, and inflatable air safety panels on the bends. The community welcomed racers from across Ukraine, as well as drivers from Poland, Slovakia, and Denmark. Ukraine’s Stanislav Melnichuk raced away with the top prize, while Dmytro Mostovyk and Vitaliy Lysak finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

У травні в Червонограді відбулись змагання зі спідвею другого туру національного відкритого індивідуального чемпіонату. Цього року червоноградський стадіон "Гірник", де проводяться змагання, святкує своє 60-річчя. Його доріжки для перегонів є одними з небагатьох треків в Україні, що відповідають європейським стандартам за освітленням, шириною колії, а також за наявністю пневматичних панелей безпеки на поворотах. Публіка щиро вітала гонщиків з усієї України, а також з Польщі, Словаччини та Данії. Lviv’s Yunist Stadium saw the official kick-off of the new women’s rugby season in Ukraine on April 23rd between eight teams from across Ukraine. The National Cup rugby sevens – a sport that will be featured in the Rio Olympics this summer – sees Lviv’s RC Halychyna compete with seven other teams: Odesa’s Vidrada and Anatra White Angles, Kharkiv’s HTZ Olymp, Kyiv’s Fenix, Kremenets’ CYSS, Ternopil’s Panyanky, and an all-star team from the Khmelnitsky Oblast. The teams began the season with three 14-minute long games in the group stage. The favourites in the tournament are the teams from Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa. In the games in Lviv, Kremenets’ CYSS managed to knock off Ternopil’s Panyanky while in the main match, Odesa’s Vidrada got by the current Ukrainian champions from Odesa, the Anatra White Angels.

Любителі цього мужнього (а тепер ще й жіночого) виду спорту, вже знають, що він увійшов до програми Олімпійських ігор в Ріо-де-Жанейро цього року. У змаганнях за Кубок України з регбі-7 львівська команда "Галіція" конкуруватиме з сімома іншими командами: "Відрада" і "Анатра" (Одеса), "ХТЗ Олімп" (Харків), "Фенікс" (Київ), "ДЮСШ" (Кременець), "ТНЕУ-2" (Тернопіль), і збірна Хмельницької області. SUCCESS IN ACTION: GALICIA GREENERY COMPANY On April 21, 2016 in the framework of the SUCCESS IN ACTION project by the initiative of Kristina Onyshchenko, Deputy Head of the EBA Lviv Management Committee, EBA members visited GALICIA GREENERY Company. Galicia Greenery LLC is a greenhouse company based in Busk and the EBA member. It produces vegetables for the Ukrainian market and delivers the products directly to local and international retail chains based in Ukraine. It is fully owned by Galicia Greenery Holding BV and the shareholders of the Company are the Dutch growers cooperation. Mikel Honders, Commercial Director of Galicia Greenery told the history of establishing the business in Ukraine and each participant had an opportunity to see the unique Dutch technology and to find out more about the management issues in such agricultural business as growing salads. On behalf of participants we would like to express our gratitude to the Galicia Greenery management for interesting and exciting event and to KRISTINA ONYSHCHENKO for initiative and support in conducting this event. Q: Dear Mr. Malskyy, For more than 10 years I worked as a lead manager in a recruiting company in Europe. Now I intend to establish a new recruiting company in Ukraine. Please advise what legal form for such company would be most advantageous? Does a recruiting company in Ukraine require some additional permits to conduct such activities? Conducting of recruiting activities in Ukraine does not require a certain legal form. You can choose any of the legal forms defined by Ukrainian legislation. However, taking into account the simplicity of establishment, we would advise you to choose for your company a legal form of a Limited Liability Company (LLC). A Limited Liability Company is one of the most advantageous legal forms, in particular, for a recruiting company. Ukrainian legislation does not impose specific requirements for the number of participants of such company: you can establish a company as a single participant. Beside this, there are no requirements for the amount of share capital; it can consist of cash, certain things or proprietary rights. Also a Limited Liability Company is rather fast to establish: preparation of standard documents and state registration can take up to two weeks. In addition, a Limited Liability Company can take some tax advantages, in particular, pay taxes under the simplified system. And if you as a foreigner establish a Limited Liability Company in Ukraine, this company will be considered as a foreign company and will also benefit from status of foreign investment. But for conducting of recruiting activities in Ukraine, namely activities regarding the employment of Ukrainian citizens abroad, you will require a special license. To obtain such license you have to submit an application and certain documents to the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. The required documents are listed in the Licensing conditions for mediation in employment abroad approved by Resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 16 December 2015 No. 1060. The above-mentioned Licensing conditions determine the requirements for premises where such activities shall be conducted, for documentation as well as the obligation of legal entity providing recruiting activities in Ukraine. I would advise you to learn this Licensing conditions and to organize your activities in Ukraine in accordance with their provisions. 2011–2015
