THE 44 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS… The holiday season in Ukraine is long, action-packed, and like nowhere else on earth. So get ready for weeks of eating, drinking, and celebrating – Ukrainian-style. While in the West, the 12 Days of Christmas might be little more than an antiquated reminder of days of yore in the face of the modern onslaught of never-ending Christmas commercialism, with all of the celebrating required of Ukrainians during the holiday season, they’d be forgiven for finding the number 12 just a touch quaint. Lying as it does at the crossroads of several worlds – European and Slavic, Catholic and Orthodox, modern and pagan – Lviv remains the perfect crucible for all the traditions to come together. This might explain why the holiday season in Ukraine is so long, and so jam-packed. But really, if you’re fortunate enough to be in the country during this time of year – there is no other place in the world that celebrates the holidays quite like Ukraine. DOUBLE THE FUN Lying at the crossroads of civilisations has its advantages. Hundreds of years ago Lviv first prospered by acting as a trading post along the Spice Road between the East and West. Nowadays, perhaps the clearest reminder is that Ukrainians, during the holiday season follow two calendars – the Gregorian and the Julian. This is one reason why the holiday season lasts so long – some Ukrainians follow the Gregorian calendar, like those in the Western world; others follow the Julian calendar,

like much of the Slavic world. So for some Ukrainians, the holiday season begins with St. Nicholas Day on December 6th, like in Europe. For others, it falls on December 19th, like in Belarus and Serbia. Ditto for Christmas (December 25th & January 7th) and New Year’s (December 31st & January 13th). Like a step-child that celebrates Christmas with both her parents, Ukraine doubles the fun by celebrating each day twice. THE MORE THE MERRIER Ukraine is a country that knows how to celebrate. Throughout the year there are days to celebrate your name, your city, and even your occupation. There are also special days to mark religious, communist, and even pagan traditions. The Christmas season is no different. When the country converted to Christianity in the 9th-Century, pagan beliefs were so widespread that instead of rooting out the practices, early missionaries allowed for pagan and Christian doctrine to be mixed. This means that today, in addition to the many religious holiday celebrations, a number have their roots in pagan festivities. Yet Ukraine is also a modern country, and has adopted some of the more popular modern traditions, including Christmas trees and Santa Claus. So in Ukraine, you can see a wheat sheaf (didukh) – a traditional Ukrainian symbol of the holidays – in the same living room as a Christmas tree, and it could be either St. Nicholas, Did Moroz (Grandfather Frost) or Santa Claus that brings the gifts.

LVIV – THE GRAND MELTING POT OF CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS There are festivals like Blaze of the Christmas Star and the Pampukh Holiday, old-fashioned Ukrainian carolling concerts and modern pop stars in holiday-themed shows, and there is the spectacular Christmas tree (yalinka) in front of the Opera & Ballet Theatre and there is the festive Christmas parade that winds along Lviv’s cobblestone streets on January 7th. The parade, in fact, is a large version of a popular tradition of holiday house-to-house carolling in Ukraine. The tradition is wonderfully representative of the holidays in Ukraine. A group of young men and women go house-to-house to perform a Christmas play. While the play is usually centred around the Christian nativity story, a goat will always be present; the goat, of course, representing the pagan god of fertility. The same play might also feature Did Moroz and Santa Claus, the grim reaper and an angel, and Angela Merkel and Yuliya Tymoshenko. East and west, pagan and religious, traditional and contemporary – the holidays in Ukraine have it all. Lviv’s popular Pampukh Holiday – also known as “Donut Fest” – is also one of the city’s most original and popular winter celebrations. The event will take place from 22-23 January at the Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life (1 Chernecha Hora St.). Festivalgoers can watch the baking process, learn the history, pick up some recipes and, most importantly, indulge in this beloved Christmas pastry. By now, it’s about time to take a break and just enjoy your time socialising. Skating is perhaps the leading winter entertainment activity in European cities and Lviv has established a skating tradition of its own. For nearly 15 years now, a skating rink is mounted in the city centre on Rynok Square. Square The rink’s central location limits the surface size, but there is almost no time between December and March that you won’t find happy Leopolitans gliding along the 30x40 metre sheet of ice. Open from 10:00 – 21:00, the rink provides skate rentals for those in need. ENCHANTING MOTANKA 26 February at 20.00 at !FESTRepublic Club (24-26 Staroznesenska St.) Lviv’s bumping !FESTRepublic Club will host the hot, Lutsk-based band Motanka this February. Known for their runner-up appearance at the 2018 Metal Battle at Wacken Open Air – the world’s largest heavy music festival – the musicians signed a contract with Napalm Records, the world’s largest metal label. The band plays what’s known as ‘mystical metal’, which is highlighted by the use of Ukrainian ethnic instruments, like cymbals and ocarinas. They combine folk motifs, heavy music, and modern electronics to transport audiences to the times when ancient Slavs performed magical rites, where the human spirit merged with the spirits of nature. LEGENDARY ‘LYAPIS 98’ 19 January at 19.00 at Lviv Circus (83 Horodotska St.) Renowned Belarussian group Lypais Trubetskoy will perform a special live show on 19 January to celebrate frontman Siarhei Mikhalok’s 50th birthday. Created in 1990, the group gained popularity for hits like Zelenoglazoye Taksi (Green-Eyed Taxi), V Platye Belom (In a White Dress), Yabloni (Apple Trees), Capital, and Au. Midway through their career, the group shed its pop-star sound in favour of music known more for its social and political satire. The group split up in 2014 into two different groups – Trubetskoy and Brutto, led by Mikhalok. Today, Mikhalok fills venue after venue in Ukraine and other Eastern European countries, thrilling audiences with his older pop hits and newer, deeper music. Living in Ukraine since 2014, he currently leads ‘Drezden’, a Belarussian and Ukrainian electronic band. Lviv’s hopping !FESTRepublic Club will be jumping to the sounds of She Past Away, a dark wave band from Turkey, on 28 January. Formed in 2006 by Volkan Caner (vocals/guitar) and Idris Akbulut (bass), the group added Doruk Ozturkcan on electronic drums in 2009 to complete its current shape. Clashing gothic lyrics with buzzsaw guitars, broken vocals, and sensory drum effects, the band evokes the cavernous experiments of the darkwave era with the likes of The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Suicide. THE UNREAL STORY H O W U K R A IN E ’ S ‘ B A C H ’ B R O U GH T C A R O L O F T H E B E L L S T O T H E W O R L D You surely know the Christmas hit ‘Carol of the Bells’. You might have heard it at the movie theatre, at movies like Home Alone or The Santa Claus. Maybe you saw your favourite television characters perform it, like the Swedish Chef and Beaker on The Muppets or Mr. Mackey on South Park. Or maybe it was on the radio – after all, it was one of the Top 10 most-streamed Christmas songs in the USA last year. Perhaps you even know that it was composed by a Ukrainian patriot – Mykola Leontovych. But do you know the story behind the song is filled with murder, betrayal, and a fight for independence? The haunting Christmas hit we all know and love today has a Hollywood-worthy history, so keep reading to find out more.

THE MAKING OF AN ICONIC CAROL While Leontovych arranged the well-known musical version of the song we know today, he based it off a traditional folk chant that supposedly predates Christianity. Known as ‘Shchedryk’ (Bountiful Evening), the Ukrainian lyrics tell of a swallow that flies into a house and sings of the wealth and prosperity that is coming. The song heralds the rebirth of earth and the coming of spring, which is why it’s sung at New Year’s in Ukraine – not Christmas. Don’t worry – if you make the mistake of singing it too early while caroling or on a ‘Vertep’, your hosts will be sure to remind you of it. The song’s popularity has lent the title for a word denoting any New Year’s carol in Ukraine: ‘shchedrivky’. The song found international popularity early on when performed by the Ukrainian National Chorus to a sold-out Carnegie Hall in New York in 1921. English lyrics were added by NBC’s Peter Wilhousky in 1936 and the song became a staple of holiday advertising. There have been over 150 arrangements of the tune in the last decade alone in virtually every musical style, from metal to swing to hip hop to Celtic (see below for a great sampling). It remains one of the Christmas season’s most enduring carols.

MUSICAL PATRIOTISM What most people don’t know about the genesis of the tune is that is was composed during a time of great upheaval in Ukraine. When he first started composing his mega hit, Leontovych had been sent back to his home oblast of Vinnytsia for supporting workers during the 1905 Russian Revolution. It was there that the conductor of the Ukrainian Republic Choir (Oleksandr Koshyts) asked him to create a song based on Ukrainian folk music. Shchedryk was first played at the Kyiv University in 1916 to great acclaim, making Leontovych a well-known figure when the Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed just six months later. During the short period of time of Ukraine’s early independence, Leontovych was instrumental in helping form Ukrainian cultural entities such as the Ukrainian State Orchestra and the Ukrainian National Chorus (the same that would later popularise the hit internationally) to promote Ukrainian culture abroad. This made him a target when the Bolsheviks retook Kyiv in 1919.

BETRAYAL Leontovych was forced to leave Kyiv and move back to his home oblast of Vinnytsia. There he founded the first music school in Turchyn and began work on his first opera. He worried about his security and even had papers to stay in Romania while touring abroad with the Ukrainian National Chorus. He decided to spend Christmas Day 1921 (the Orthodox holiday of the Feast of the Nativity) with his family and a colleague, an undercover Chekist (Soviet State Security) officer named Afanasy Grishchenko. After the celebrations, Grishchenko was invited to stay over and share a room with Leontovych. The officer shot Leontovych at dawn, robbing his family and leaving the composer to die of blood loss a few hours later. The man paid with his life to promote Ukrainian culture abroad, making him one of Ukraine’s earliest patriots and martyrs. Lee Reaney

Захоплююче! Ми вчились разом зі своїми пацієнтами й щодня намагались ставати кращими. Це все було для нас вперше й хвилююче, але, загалом, ми задоволені своїм результатом. За рік нас відвідало більше ніж 2 500 тисячі маленьких пацієнтів. А це свідчить про те, що ми отримали довіру батьків, які доручили нам піклування про здоров'я своіх дітей.

Озираючись на рік назад, чи все Вам вдалося втілити із запланованого? Так, нам все вдалося! Я абсолютно задоволена результатом. Звісно, нам є ще куди рости і над чим працювати, й ми не припиняємо цього процесу. Але, загалом, все із запланованого нам вдалось реалізувати, завдяки, в першу чергу, моїй потужній супер команді.

Як це, запускати бізнес під час пандемії, карантину та кризи? Це власне той бізнес, що був потрібен у час пандемії. У лікарнях коронавірус тоді був сконцентрований найбільше. І багато батьків власне шукали такого безпечного, комфортного місця, куди можна було прийти зі своїми дітьми на прийом до лікаря. У нас дотримані всі норми та вимоги безпеки, починаючи від вентиляції до постійно працюючих сучасних ультрафіолетових ламп. Ми стараємося планувати візити таким чином, щоб відвідувачі мінімально перетиналися між собою та не утворювались черги та скупчення дітей з батьками. Ми максимально намагаємось створити всі умови, щоб батьки з дітьми почувались у нас в повній безпеці.

Яке місце, на Вашу думку, займає приватна медицина в загальній системі охорони здоров’я? Загалом педіатрія для мене дуже близька і рідна… Я закінчила медичний факультет, напрям педіатрія, викладаю пропедевтику педіатрії і працюю в дитячій лікарні. Я сама маю дітей і хочу відвідувати з ними виключно клініку для дітей. Розпочалась медична реформа, і сімейна медицина, яку нам запропонували – це звичайно дуже добре, але мені особисто хочеться, щоб моїми дітьми займався виключно лікар-педіатр. Це має суттєве значення в плані компетенції. Педіатрія відрізняється від дорослої медицини: потребує іншого підходу, іншого середовища, глибших знань, вимагає більшого часу на прийом. Інколи батьки нарікають на те, що у сімейних амбулаторіях поряд знаходяться й старші люди, й малі діти. Тому моїй команді хотілось би зберегти «проєкт дитинства» тут у нас. Адже з турботи про дітей і народилася ідея Педіатрії Андріани Мальської.

Чим приватна педіатрія відрізняється від державної? Зараз в контексті медичної реформи з’являється багато хороших закладів, амбулаторії сімейної медицини. Приватна педіатрія розрахована на тих, хто хоче офіційно заплатити гроші лікарю й отримати якісний сервіс у конкретно виділений час. Досить часто до нас звертаються пацієнти тоді, коли вони не можуть у той же день потрапити до сімейного лікаря, тому що в нього немає вільного часу. Або, наприклад, у державній сімейній медицині на кожного маленького пацієнта виділяється 15–20 хвилин на візит, а цього є недостатньо для того, щоб батьки могли отримати всі

Для кожного з батьків дитина – це є найбільший скарб, і цілком логічно, що вони хотіли б отримати більше інформації, й щоб лікар приділив їм більше уваги. Це одна з основних відмінностей. Що дають на практиці українському лікарю закордонні стажування? По-перше, це розширює світогляд лікаря і змінює розуміння підходу до пацієнта. Ми загрузли в радянській системі охорони здоров'я, а дуже важливо мати інакший погляд, не сповідувати ту радянську медицину, а рухатись у напрямку до західної доказової медицини. Менше піддаватись впливу фармкомпаній. В Україні на лікарях лежить дуже багато «немедичних» обов’язків. На заході, все ж таки, лікар – є лікар, він займається виключно лікувальною роботою, а поруч з ним працює багато адміністративного персоналу, який знімає з лікарів всі зайві обов’язки, для того, щоб він був найкращим фахівцем у своїй галузі, зосереджувався виключно на пацієнті, міг робити наукові відкриття, а не розпорошувався на буденні речі. Тому що лікарі не повинні думати де, як і на чому працювати. У нашій системі, наприклад, я разом із Куриляк Ольгою Борисівною мали самі знайти на чому працювати – написали грант, щоб отримати ультразвуковий апарат та холтер-монітори АТ та ЕКГ, щоб мати можливість практикувати, як повноцінні кардіологи і забезпечити ту належну медичну службу дітям у державній лікарні. Я вже не кажу про ремонтні роботи..Все це "пожирає" дуже багато часу і залишає менше часу на самого пацієнта. Тому я вважаю, що це неправильно. Лікар має максимально займається практикою, повинен весь час читати сучасні актуальні статті в своєму напрямку, вести самому наукову роботу, доповідати про свої цікаві клінічні випадки, публікувати їх, гуртувати навколо себе коло таких же хороших фахівців, як він сам, навчати молодих лікарів. От тоді можлива сильна медицина. У нас трошки в якийсь час то все змінилось... дехто з лікарів вважає, що його знання належать тільки їм і не хоче вчити інших, а це дуже неправильно.

Чи вдалось Вам втілити щось із побаченого під час стажувань? Звичайно. Все що я знаю і маю – це завдяки моїм стажуванням. Я з захопленням спостерігала, як за кордоном лікарі ставляться до своїх LVIV TODAY | Winter 2021/22

пацієнтів, навіть тоді, коли цього ніхто не бачить. Інтереси пацієнта мають бути в центрі всієї системи охорони здоров'я. Тоді все буде добре! Ми бачили і знаємо, як працює, наприклад, кардіологічна служба в США та Австрії й створюємо тут щось подібне.

Що б ви порадили батькам при виборі педіатра? Я б радила звертати увагу на його особистість, вона має імпонувати мамі дитини, адже вона має відчувати певний зв'язок з педіатром і довіряти йому всецільно, тоді все буде добре! Ідеально, щоб це був один лікар, тоді він буде знати все про дитину і особливості її розвитку протягом багатьох років. Сучасний педіатр має бути добрим та привітним до дитини, попри те, що він має бути добре «підкованим» як спеціаліст. І ще раз наголошую, що лікар має постійно стежити за всіма ноу-хау, новими підходами в лікуванні та догляді за дитиною, адже багато що змінюється з часом, й потрібно бути весь час у тренді. Якщо ти ставиш інтереси пацієнта на перше місце – ти будеш на 100 % добрим педіатром, і батьки подарують такому лікарю свою довіру.

В Україні рекомендують щепити від COVID-19 дітей, старших 12 років. Ваше ставлення, як педіатра до цього? Чи плануєте вакцинувати власних дітей? Так, я вже звернулась до свого педіатра, тому що хочу вакцинувати старшого сина. Працюючи в ОХМАТДИТі ми бачимо хворих дітей, які мають Covid, й усвідомлюємо, що діти, можливо, й не хворіють так важко, але вакцинація – єдиний спосіб зупинити масове поширення вірусу в суспільстві. Також маємо приклад розвинутих держав, таких як Данія, Швеція, де є високий відсоток щеплення. Вони вже забули, що таке карантин й повертаються до нормального способу життя. Тому, звичайно, ми підтримуємо й пропагуємо вакцинацію від всіх захворювань, адже завдяки цьому неоціненному винаходу людства ми вже забули про багато захворювань, які раніше спричиняли інвалідизацію та навіть смерть дитини. Відтак, безумовно, що вакцинація – це крута еволюція людського розвитку.

Яким ви бачите подальший розвиток «Педіатрія Андріани Мальської»? Які особисті задуми плануєте втілити? Спочатку я думала, що ми залишимось невеличкою педіатрією, але дуже якісною, із пацієнтоорієнтованим підходом. Тепер, коли я бачу, скільки людей довіряє нам, їде до нас, я не виключаю можливого розширення. Можливо, це буде ще одна локація, можливо це буде нова і більша локація. Я думаю над цим, розглядаю різні варіанти. Від себе особисто можу додати, що дуже хочеться, щоб змінювався рівень сервісу в державних медичних закладах. Я, як голова опікунської ради, весь час над цим працюю в ОХМАТДИТі. І повірте – не все так легко, як здається… Також дуже важливо для нас не тільки розвиватись самим, але й розвивати наші майбутні кадри. З нами також працюють лікарі інтерни, яких ми

також навчаємо, оскільки хочемо, щоб вони отримували у нас не тільки практичні знання, а відразу сповідували наші цінності. У 2019 році ми заснували «Фундацію родини Мальських» для підтримки програми стажувань студентів-медиків у різних клініках світу. Щоб наші студенти мали можливість привезти та реалізувати здобутий досвід в Україні, адже він є вкрай необхідним для зміни світогляду майбутніх лікарів. На жаль, Covid нам трохи завадив, студенти змогли втілити свою мрію тільки зараз. Загалом 25 студентів отримали по 500 доларів стипендії від нашого фонду. Частина студентів так і не змогли поїхати, оскільки у них вже розпочалась інтернатура. Ми не зупиняємось і працюємо далі в цьому напрямку. Зараз я планую створити експертну раду, яка буде проводити співбесіди та обирати кандидатів. Студентам потрібно написати мотиваційний лист, мати хороший середній бал з навчання, бути соціально активним, і тоді, базуючись на цих складових, експертна рада обере кандидатів. Ми визначимо конкретну кількість стипендій і кращі з кращих зможуть отримати стипендію від «Фундації родини Мальських». Pediatrics of Andriana Malska We care about the most important thing – the health of your children Andriana, how was your first year of work? It was exciting! We studied with our patients and tried to get better every day. It was all very exciting for us and overall, we are happy with the results. More than 2,500 young patients visited us during the year. This shows that we have gained the recognition of parents who have entrusted us with the care of their children's health.

Looking back to a year ago, did you manage to accomplish all you had planned? Yes, we did! I am absolutely thrilled with the result. Of course, we still have room to grow and work on, and we are not stopping this process. But in general, we managed to bring to life everything we had planned, thanks, first of all, to my powerful super team.

How does it feel to start a business during a pandemic, quarantine, and global health crisis?

hy do you need pediatricians? Strange question, isn't it? Medicine did not divide patients into adults and children for a long time – not until the middle of the 19th Century. Finally, it was recognised that a child's body has many differences from an adult’s and requires special approaches during examination and treatment. Today, parents are well aware that the supervision and consultation of pediatricians is necessary even for healthy babies, not to mention children who have serious health problems. After all, a child is not just a little adult.

In Lviv, the Andriana Malska Pediatrics Clinic has been successfully operating for a year now, focusing on the child, his or her little world and worries. Today we will talk about modern pediatrics with Andriana Malska – the founder of "Pediatrics of Andriana Malska" clinic, pediatric cardiologist, associate professor of propaedeutics of pediatrics and medical genetics LNMU. D. Halytsky, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of OKHMATDYT, and founder of the Malskyy Family Foundation.

This is the business that was needed the most during the pandemic. In hospitals, the coronavirus was the focus. Many parents were actually looking for a safe, comfortable place where they could come with their children to see a doctor. We meet all safety standards and requirements, from ventilation to constantly operating modern ultraviolet lamps. We try to schedule in such a way that visitors minimally intersect with each other, so that there are no queues or crowds of children with their parents. We do our best to create all the conditions for parents and children to feel completely safe with us.

What do you think is the place of private medicine in the general health care system? In general, pediatrics is very dear to me… I graduated from medical school, majoring in pediatrics, teaching propaedeutics of pediatrics, and working in a children's hospital. I have children myself, and I want to visit only children's clinics with them. Medical reform has begun, and the family medicine we have been offered is certainly very good, but I personally want my children to be cared for exclusively by a pediatrician. This is essential in terms of competence. Pediatrics is different from adult medicine; it requires a different approach, a different environment and deeper knowledge, it requires more time for admission. Parents sometimes complain that older people and young children are in the same queue in the general clinic. That's why my team would like to keep the "childhood project" alive here with us. After all, the idea of Pediatrics of Andriana Malska was born out of caring for children.

How is private pediatrics different from public? Now, in the context of health care reform, there are many good facilities, family medicine clinics. Private pediatrics is designed for those who want to officially pay the doctor, get quality service, and have a specific time. Quite often patients come to us when they cannot go to the family doctor on the same day, because

he has no free slot. Or, for example, in public family medicine, each young patient is given 15-20 minutes to visit, which is not enough for parents to get all the answers to their questions about their child's health. For each parent, their child is their greatest treasure and it is understandable that they would like to receive more information and that the doctor pays more attention to them. This is one of the main differences. We want to create the most comfortable conditions for both children and parents. In order for them to understand that they have someone to turn to in order to get professional advice in time. We have one hour to consult a pediatrician and a neurologist.

What are the main factors that qualitatively distinguish "Pediatrics of Andriana Malska" from others? Our main factor is that the patient is always at the center of our work. We constantly emphasise that we try to wrap him in care as much as possible. Our pediatrics offers a closed cycle. Most of our doctors also work in the children's hospital OKHMATDIT, so if there is a need for hospitalization – the same doctors will treat the child in the hospital. Our approaches to diagnosis and treatment are based on the principles of evidence-based medicine. We try to be always on the cutting edge of medical innovations, both in treatment and in the care of the child's health. Every day, our team learns, grows, and seeks new knowledge to provide patient-centred care of the highest quality.

You said your superpower is your super team. Please tell us about your doctors. All our doctors have the highest professional category, among them are candidates of medical sciences. Our team of pediatricians includes the best specialists from OKHMATDYT, who have many years of practical experience working with children of all ages. We also have excellent specialists such as surgeon Andriy Dvorakevich, urologist Danylo Ivaskevych, and pediatric allergist Victoria Bergtravm. All of our patients really like our neurologist Myroslava Paliychuk. We have also excellent specialists in cardiology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, urology, surgery, neurology, and allergology. COVER STORY I have been teaching propaedeutics of pediatrics at the Medical University for eight years. The department is based in Lviv OKHMATDYT, where I, as an associate professor of the department, consult as a pediatric cardiologist. My dissertation was also devoted to pediatric cardiology. Accordingly, I consult patients not as a pediatrician, but as a pediatric cardiologist. An integral part of our team is certainly the nurses, who have a very good rapport with children. We are constantly monitoring their skills so that they can also grow with us. They have repeatedly participated in various medical conferences for nurses. Our nurses not only have excellent practical skills, because they mostly work with newborns in the children's regional hospital, but they also know how to have fun, talk to children, make sure they are not afraid )☺

What equipment does Pediatrics of Andriana Malska offer? We have new modern diagnostic equipment for functional and ultrasonic diagnostics, which allows us to avoid errors as much as possible.

How do you see the further development of "Pediatrics of Andriana Malska"? What are your personal goals?

The doctor should be engaged in practice as much as possible, should constantly read modern articles in their fields, conduct scientific work, report on interesting clinical cases, publish findings, meet with other qualified professionals, and train young doctors. That's when strong medicine is possible. We have changed a little bit at some point ... Some doctors believe that their knowledge belongs only to them and do not want to teach others, but this is very wrong.

What did you realise during the internships? What do you think affects the level of professionalism of your physicians? I can say at once that this is a continuous development and learning! If we list all the factors, it is the quality of basic medical education, practice and experience in the specialty, the ongoing process of additional professional education and continuing self-education. Ideally, good knowledge of English for the opportunity to get acquainted with foreign patients. For example, doctors of our pediatrics have at different times undergone internships in more than 10 countries, including Canada, the USA, Germany, Japan, and France. In general, COVID has facilitated many online learning opportunities now. In the past, finances and time did not always allow this to happen. Now you can buy a modern online course on various topics of study and listen to it in your spare time. This is a pretty good way to keep your up-to-date.

What types of practice do foreign internships give Ukrainian doctors? First, it broadens the physician's worldview and changes the understanding of the approach to the patient. We are immersed in the Soviet health care system, and it is very important to have a different view, not to profess that Soviet medicine, but to go more towards Western evidence-based medicine. Less exposed to pharmaceutical companies. In Ukraine, doctors have a lot of "non-medical" responsibilities. In the West, however, a doctor is engaged exclusively in medical work, and next to him work a lot of administrative staff, who take from doctors all unnecessary responsibilities, so that they can focus exclusively on patients, and could make scientific discoveries instead of wasting time on petty things. Doctors there do not have to think about where, how, and what to work on. In our system, for example, Olga Kurylyak and I had to find equipment to work on ourselves – we had to apply for a grant to get an ultrasound machine and blood pressure monitors and ECGs, to be able to practice as fully-fledged cardiologists and provide proper medical care to children at the hospital. That’s not even mentioning repairs… All this "devours" a lot of time and leaves less time for the patients. So, I don't think that's right. LVIV TODAY | Winter 2021/22

Everything I know and have is thanks to my internships. I watched with admiration how doctors treat their patients abroad, even when no one sees it. The patient's interests must be at the heart of the entire health care system. Then everything will be fine! We have seen and know how the cardiology service works in the United States and Austria, for example, and we are creating something similar here.

What advice would you give to parents when choosing a pediatrician? I would advise you to pay attention to their personality; it should impress the child's mother, because she should feel a certain connection with the pediatrician and trust him completely, and then everything should be fine. Ideally, it should be one doctor, then he will know everything about the child and the peculiarities of its development over time. A modern pediatrician should be kind and friendly to the child on top of being very knowledgeable. And once again, I emphasize that they must constantly monitor all the latest developments, new approaches to treatment, and childcare – because things change over time. You always need to be up to date. If you put the patient's interests first, you will 100% be a good pediatrician, and parents will thank such a pediatrician with confidence.

In Ukraine, it was recommended that children over 12 be vaccinated against COVID-19. Why is it important to get your children vaccinated? I have already consulted my own pediatrician because I want to vaccinate my eldest son. Working at OHMATDYT, we see sick children who have COVID. They may not get seriously ill, but vaccination is the only way to stop the spread of disease in society. We see examples of developed countries such as Denmark, Sweden, which have a high vaccination rate. They have forgotten what quarantine is and are returning to a normal lifestyle. Therefore, of course, we support and promote vaccination against all diseases, because thanks to this invaluable invention of humankind, we have forgotten about many diseases that previously caused disability and even death of a child. So, of course, vaccination is a vital step in the evolution of human development.

At first, I thought that we would remain a small pediatrics clinic with high quality standards, and with a very patient-oriented approach. But now that I see that people trust us, come to us, so I’m not ruling out an expansion. Maybe it will be another location, maybe it will be a larger, new premises. I'm thinking about it and considering different options. Personally, I can add that I really want to change the level of service in public health facilities. As the chairman of the board of trustees, I am constantly working on this at OKHMATDYT. And believe me, not everything is as easy as it seems… It is also important for us to not only develop ourselves, but to develop our future staff. We work with interns, whom we also teach, because we want them to receive not only practical knowledge, but to adopt our values from the very beginning. In 2019, we established the Malskyy Family Foundation to support the internship program for medical students in various clinics around the world. Our students have an opportunity to bring their experience to Ukraine, after all it is extremely necessary to shape of world outlook of future doctors. Unfortunately, COVID became a bit of an obstacle and students have only recently been able to start realising their dreams. A total of 25 students received $500 scholarships from our foundation. Some students were never able to go because their internships had already begun. We do not stop and continue to work in this direction. Now I plan to create an expert council that will conduct interviews and select candidates. Students will need to write a cover letter, have good grades, be socially active and, based on these factors, the expert council will select candidates. We will determine the specific number of scholarships and the best of the best will be able to receive a scholarship from the Malskyy Family Foundation. THE PRIDE OF UKRAINE:: UKRAINE V IK TO R C H U K ARIN ' S PATH TO V ICTO RY From Nazi concentration camps to the king of the 1956 Olympic Games, Lviv’s seventime Olympic champion gymnast Viktor Chukarin proved to the world that nothing can break an iron will. Ukraine marks the centennial birthday of the legend in 2021.

EARLY LIFE IN DONBAS Born in the Donetsk oblast in 1921, the future Olympic champion spent his childhood in Mariupol where he discovered his love and talent for gymnastics thanks to the encouragement of a teacher. Following graduation, he trained at a metallurgical technical school. But his passion and talent for sport saw him make the move to a physical educ tion school, where he ended up at Kyiv’s Institute of Physical Education. By age 19, Chukarin could already call himself Ukrainian champion – but he wanted more. His eyes were set on becoming champion of all USSR. But WWII got in the way.

NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS Chukarin volunteered for the Red Army in September 1941, just weeks after the Nazi invasion. He was sent to the Battle of Kyiv near Poltava, where the fighting was fierce. After losing consciousness due to Nazi artillery fire, he found himself one of about a dozen of his comrades that had been captured. They were all sent to labour camps. Chukarin first ended up in Sandbostel, a modest camp in central Germany without any buildings for prisoners and surrounded by barbed wire. His first effort at escape ended up in failure, and he wore the scar from the disciplinary rifle butt beating for the rest of his life. The prisoners were then transferred from camp to camp – Chukarin went through 17 camps himself – and the dream of escape never left his mind. When he was transferred to Buchenwald, his 16th camp, he was given the number ‘10491’ and forced to work 12 hours a day in the quarries. Despite the hardships, Chukarin maintained his training as best he could, earning himself the nickname ‘The Gymnast’. He was transferred to a North Sea camp inthe Spring of ’45.

REINTEGRATING IN LVIV The prisoners were taken to a barge waiting for them on the coast. Knowing the fate that awaited them, several arose to try to overpower the guards. They were killed. The remaining prisoners were loaded into the hold of the barge and the boat embarked. Shortly thereafter a British bomber swooped down and fired on the tug. An allied ship then approached the barge and freed the prisoners. It was the first they’d heard that Nazi Germany had surrendered. Even his own mother couldn’t recognise Viktor Chukarin when he arrived home. After years of enduring the Nazi’s “Hunger Diet”, ‘The Gymnast’ weighed just 40 kilograms. Not his starvation diet, nor his time spent at 17 Nazi concentration camps, nor even losing his father and brother during the war could break Chukarin’s iron will. No one foresaw a career in sports upon his return, but ‘The Gymnast’ had other ideas. Chukarin entered the Lviv Institute of Physical Education and began to vigorously train. By 1946, he qualified for the Soviet national championships.

He finished fifth the next year and finally achieved his dream of becoming a national champion in 1948. By 1949, he was the all-around Soviet champion and retained that title in 1950, 1951, 1953, and 1955. His successes led him to dream bigger – and the next step was the Olympics.

OLYMPIC DOMINATION Chukarin’s rise to prominence coincided with the USSR’s emergence on the Olympic stage. The team sent observers (but no athletes) to London 1948 – the year Chukarin won his first national championship. Chukarin was a bona fide star when the Soviets made their first appearance at the Olympics – at Helsinki 1952. At 31, he was already a chiseled veteran – both literally and figuratively – by this time. Even without his concentration camp experience, it is a veteran age for a gymnast. ‘The Gymnast’ didn’t disappoint. He became Olympic champion in pommel horse and vault and picked up silver medals in rings and uneven bars. He became one of the most decorated athletes of Helsinki 1952 and returned home a hero. It would mark the beginning of his multi-year reign as the world’s finest individual gymnast. Chukarin won three gold medals at the 1954 World Championships and entered the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne as a favourite to repeat. Now 35, Chukarin cemented his status as one of the finest gymnasts to ever compete at the Olympic Games by winning three more gold medals, including as the individual all-around champion. He would end his Olympic career with 11 medals, including as a seven-time Olympic champion.

PASSING THE TORCH After his brilliant performance at the 1956 Olympics, Chukarin laced up his shoes for the final time as an athlete at age 36. But, of course, you can’t take the gymnastics out of a gymnast, so he took up teaching. After completing his degree as a trainer-teacher at the Lviv State Institute of Physical Culture in 1950, he became an assistant professor in the gymnastics department in 1963 and head of the department in 1971 – a position he held for a long time. An entire generation of Leopolitan gymnasts owe their successes to ‘The Gymnast’. At the same time, Chukarin was asked to pass on his rich experiences to the young athletes on the USSR national team. He developed more than a dozen athletes that received the prestigious LVIV TODAY | Winter 2021/22

LEGENDARY LEOPOLITANS Master of Sports and in 1972 was awarded the title Honoured Coach of Ukraine. He coached the USSR team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, in which the team topped the medal table with 16 medals, including six gold.

HONOURING HIS LEGACY The legendary gymnast passed away in 1984 at the age of 62. He remains one of the most famous people interred in Lviv’s Lychakiv Cemetery. In recognition of his exploits, and the generations of young Leopolitans he inspired, Lviv City Council named a street after Chukarin.

In honour of the 100th anniversary of his birth, a series of events were organised to commemorate his life and achievements. The NOA of Ukraine hosted commemorative seminars at universities in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv. Leading Ukrainian gymnasts, including World and Olympic champions, gathered at the Educational and Scientific Olympic Institute to pay their respects to Chukarin. A biographical film on the legend was even released, produced by the Olympic Academy and the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. The film allows Ukrainians to learn more about their Olympic heritage and to – once again – be inspired by Chukarin’s remarkable achievements.

LVIV SOCIETY IT ARENA 2021 Eastern Europe’s largest tech event – Lviv’s IT Arena – attracted nearly 5.500 participants from around the world to this year’s hybrid online/offline event. Over 100 speakers addressed the audience about the most pressing modern issues over the three-day event, sharing useful tips and valuable insights with conference-goers. Maye Musk, this year’s keynote speaker, shared her experiences of professional and personal growth, focusing on women’s empowerment and the

Three outstanding entries – Mosqitter, Zeely, and Caretech Human – were recognised at the competition finals at the Lviv National Opera, each awarded with special prizes. Our beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre also hosted the Lviv IT Cluster 10th Anniversary celebration and provided an unforgettable atmosphere for the event-ending Closing After Party. OFFICE OF HONORARY CONSUL OF ARMENIA OPENED IN LVIV The Honorary Consul of Armenia was opened at 13 Virmenska St. in Lviv’s city centre on 27 November by Armenian Ambassador to Ukraine Vladimir Karapetyan and a host of other VIPs, including Bishop Markos Hovhannisyan, the Primate of the Armenian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Ukraine; Norik Gevorgyan, the Honorary Consul of Armenia in Lviv; Maksym Kozytskyi, the Governor of the Lviv Region; Andriy Sadovyi, Mayor of Lviv; and representatives of the local Armenian community. “We are opening the office of the Honorary Consul in Lviv”, said Vladimir Karapetyan, Armenia’s Ambassador to Ukraine. “Interestingly, it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Ukraine. It is an important event from the point of view of bilateral relations, especially taking into account the importance of the region, as well as the city leadership, showed at the event.”“The city is the cultural leader of Eastern Europe for Armenians”, said Gevorgyan. “Armenians have lived here for a long time and are one of the founders of the city. I think that through joint efforts with the community we will contribute to the development of contacts between the city, our people, Ukraine, and Armenia.” Today, the Armenian community is united around the Armenian Church in the historic centre of Lviv. It represents one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of the city’s ancient cultural architecture. The community has had an undeniable impact on the historical development of Lviv, as well as on its culture and traditions.

AUDIO GUIDES FOR LEOPOLITAN MUSEUMS Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, brought Ukrainian-language audio guides to three Lviv museums. Now Leopolitan culture lovers and guests of the city can listen to exciting tours of some of Lviv’s top museums by some of Ukraine’s most famous personalities. Let actor Ostap Stupka guide you through the Andrei Sheptytsky National Museum or the Johann Georg Pinsel Sculpture Museum, while the lovely voice of singer Khrystyna Solovyi will accompany you as you explore the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery at Lozynsky Palace. The project was brought to life with the cooperation of the Megogo Media Service, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture & Information Policy, and the State Agency for Tourism Development of Ukraine. The English-language versions will be available for use early in 2022.

LVIV ETNO SHOW The Lviv Art Palace played host to the wonderful Lviv Etno Show on 4–5 December. The dazzling event delighted Leopolitan culture lovers and guests of the city with a rich and colourful programme featuring numerous fashion shows by Ukrainian and foreign designers, ethnic-style creative studios, and masters of handmade clothing. Among other highlights came an inspiring exhibition and fair where attendees could admire and even purchase luxurious Christmas gifts, including jewelry, clothing, interior items, decorated plates, souvenirs, and more. Special attention was paid to the collections of ancient Ukrainian clothing from some of the biggest Ukrainian collectors. Gourmets were rewarded with traditional Ukrainian dishes, culinary workshops, and a memorable winter barbecue.

For the very first time, Lviv played host to the beauty pageant for plus-sized women! Representatives of different cities in Western Ukraine paraded the stage at the Odeon Entertainment Centre. Lviv won the right to host the event after Leopolitan Natalia Horal won last year’s National Competition. Participants enthralled audiences with their magnificent performances while showcasing designer brands. Among the event’s highlights were a stunning parade of evening gowns as well as a traditional swimsuit showcase. Boguslava Yakushevska, a 27-year-old fashion designer from Rivne, took home top honours in the Miss Plus Size category, while 36-year-old Leopolitan businesswoman Olena Sirant won first prize in the Mrs. category. The pair will represent the Lviv region at the National Competition in Kyiv on 18 December.

EBA ANNUAL GENER AL MEE TING In December, the life of the Western Ukrainian office of the Association is significant because the members are looking forward to the Annual General Meeting. During the meeting, old and new friends discussed the executive office's news and summarized the results of their activities. This year, we gathered on December 10, and the event was held under the slogan: Impossible is nothing! The goal is to achieve all that has been done despite all the obstacles to development in 2021. Anton Kharitonov (QFM service), Oleksiy Skrypnyk (Eleks Software), Ivan Kompan (Deloitte Academy), and Anton Podilchak (Advice Group) discussed the future of Ukraine? What needs to be supported and developed: the service economy, or still pay attention to our production past, and invest more influence in production? After that, the topic of how Ukraine can take place among the leaders was discussed by Mark Zarkhin (Lviv Restaurateur), Taras Kytsmey (SoftServe), Yevhen Hlibovytsky (Promova), together with Taras Yurynts (Guldmann Ukraine). The experts shared their thoughts on what we should develop now to finally become a strong partner among the strong countries. A special guest was Bronislaw Komorowski, President of the Republic of Poland 2010 – 2015. Mr. President stressed that the place and importance of Ukraine's role in the European world is the main focus of

attention today. Ukraine is a guarantor and an essential security element for Europe, and Poland supports Ukraine in all its initiatives and aspirations to unite with the European Community. Traditionally, we expressed our gratitude to the regional officials for our cooperation and had the opportunity to share our impressions during informal communication at the charming Emily Resort, which we hope will soon open its doors to everyone. Participants also learned about the results of the RCC elections. So, their interests in 2022 will be represented by Markiyan Malsky, Taras Yurynts, Anton Podilchak, Roman Velychko, and Volodymyr Romanenko. Також учасники дізнались про результати виборів до Регіональної координаціної ради Офісу. EBA SPECIAL EVENTS LEGAL COMMIT TEE MEE TING

CUSTOMS COMMIT TEE MEE TING On 4 October, a professional meeting within the framework of the EBA Customs Committee was held with representatives of the Ukrainian State Customs Service, EU4PFM, and RST at the Ministry of Finance on the Implementation of the AEO and NCTS programs in Ukraine. Key topics of the meeting were the following: • Customs clearance by "EA" declarations will be impossible for 2022, as previously was announced to the business. At the same time, companies received the status of AEO will be able to use all the benefits allowing them to save time and reduce costs within the execution of customs formalities and increase the level of customs services provided in comparison with other declarants; • While assessing the company's correspondence of the AEO status, the State Customs Service is to be provided with access to IT resources of the company and, in case of need to test certain procedures relating to the criteria. • AEO-C/Б status customs brokers will not be able to use the simplification "production according to location" without obtaining AEO-C status by the importing/ exporting company.

On November 3, 2021, as part of a new project of EBA Lviv Legal Committee, a meeting was held in the format of a dialogue with representatives of the Council of Judges of Ukraine. The purpose of the meeting was to find out more about the Council of Judges of Ukraine and to find common ground for cooperation in order to strengthen legal awareness and the legal society, the existence of which is guaranteed by the right to a court. Among other things, the participants discussed judicial reform, staff shortages, court workload, and lack of material and financial support. Also, the court index presented on the website of the Association was discussed. The survey to determine this index was conducted by 98 lawyers, who gave the highest score to commercial courts considering their activity, and defined that the main problem nowadays is the unpredictability and length of the case, which was caused by the overload of courts. Thus, the excessive workload of judges and their assistants indicates a shortage of staff in almost every court. In turn, such a load contributes to the long consideration of cases and non-compliance with the deadlines provided by legislation. This factor, among others, is a reason to distrust the judiciary. Today, in fact, 1 judge performs the amount of work for 4. The lack of court secretaries is also a problem nowadays, which affects the ability to ensure the quality of court work as well. The Council of Courts also launched the “Constitution for All” educational project on its own initiative. The aim of the project is to distribute books with poems and wonderful drawings among children, which will allow to tell them in simple language about the norms that contained in the Constitution of Ukraine and to acquaint the younger generation with their rights and responsibilities. Both members of the Association and anyone can join the project. We thank Oleksandr Sasevych, Natalia Moroz and Volodymyr Kravchuk for a meaningful and extremely necessary conversation, as well as Natalia Anokhina for the idea of a new project and moderation of the first event! Realtors are adapting to the new reality. The real estate market is changing, investments are flowing into apartment hotels and coworking spaces. The demand for rental housing is actively growing. One of the top customer demands is a stable Internet connection. So, where in Ukraine is it comfortable for Ukrainian and foreign digital nomads to live and work?

WHAT MAKES UKRAINE INTERESTING TO FREELANCERS? In the Digital Evolution Scorecard 2020, based on the assessment of 160 indicators of technological development, most Western European countries fell into the category of slowing development and problems. The country has more than 205 thousand people working in the IT business.
