in Time of War

he Lviv region has long held some of the most popular, outrageous, and in-your-face patriotic summer music festivals in all of Europe – many of them even dating back to the first years of Ukrainian independence. What happens to the spirit of carefree festival fun when your country is at war? Many Ukrainians are currently wrestling with this question as they ponder the appropriateness of attending a summertime festival in west Ukraine. The annexation of Crimea and hybrid Russian intervention in eastern Ukraine have thrown just about everything in the country into a state of chaos. As well as the staggeringly high human, political and economic costs of the conflict, Ukraine’s cultural life has also been derailed. The Lviv region – and western Ukraine as a whole – may seem a long way away from the front lines, but there is no escaping the shadow of war. Western Ukraine features dozens of summer festivals at fields, fortresses, and waterfalls right across the region, and these annual events have had a difficult time adapting to the realities of the situation in relatively distant eastern Ukraine. Western Ukrainians in general struggle daily to remember a conflict that is both far-removed geographically, while also very close to home personally. Should one be celebrating when one’s friends and family members are fighting and dying? Should war disrupt the everyday life of a region far away from actual danger?

What can one do to help? Festival organizers have gone about answering these questions in some very different ways. Some festivals, such as Woodstock Ukraine or Shypit, have decided to throw “peace” festivals, hoping to draw attention to the conflict in much the same way that the original Woodstock festival did to the war in Vietnam. Other festivals, like Bereziv Bander Fest or Bandershtat, are more aggressively patriotic, attempting to promote positive patriotism among Ukrainian youth. A number of festivals have gone about their business in much the same way as they would in any other year, hoping to ride out the conflict until the country returns to a more natural state. Others, including Pidkamin, have been cancelled altogether, as organizers believe that many festival guests are currently serving in the defence of the country. Organizers behind many of the festivals going ahead this summer believe that while the country may be at war, foreign aggressors cannot be allowed take away the nation’s right to culture – be it jazz, funk, or Ukrainian ethno-rock. They plan to celebrate the Ukrainians who are currently risking their lives in order to defend the right to do things exactly like attending Ukrainian music festivals. Meanwhile, many plan to donate a portion of their proceeds to families affected by the conflict. Not everyone will agree that summer festival hedonism is appropriate in a country experiencing the horrors of modern warfare. Nevertheless, the message among west Ukraine’s festivalgoers this summer is likely to be a simple one – support for the country’s unity, solidarity with the people defending Ukraine, and, above all, a sense of determination to live up to the European values which Ukrainians are sacrificing their lives for. Whether you’re looking for ethno-infused Ukrainian rock, mind-warping psychedelic metal, the pluck of a medieval feast and fair, the enchanting notes of indie, or jazz’s groove, there is a festival in West Ukraine just for you! If you’re looking for Ukrainian ethno-rock, Western Ukrainian patriotism, and Carpathian hospitality all rolled into one, then the BerezivBander Fest in Ivano-Frankivk Oblast’s NyzhniyBereziv is just the festival for you. Be it old-time Cossack horseback-riding, discovering former UPA trails, admiring the breathtaking Carpathians, or enjoying one of the dozens of up-and-coming Ukrainian rock bands, the festival strives to give young people the opportunity to develop in several different fields. Patriotic in spirit, the activities are themed after some of Ukraine’s most celebrated warriors – Cossacks, UPA militias, and the more-current cyborgs. But these are just to get into the Ukrainian warrior spirit; it’s the music that drives this event, and there are plenty of acts to see. With a festival manifesto to both “promote Ukrainian language, culture, values, and native music” as well as to “increase the Ukrainian national idea among young people”, you’re as likely to find young politicos delivering firebrand speeches denouncing corruption and cronyism as you are to hear a rollicking rock show. But when you do catch a performance, it will undoubtedly be Ukrainian. With performers such as: Tartak, ONUKA, and O. Torvald, you’ll quickly get a lesson in the Ukrainian national music scene. You can either dress in the red and black of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army or the blue and yellow of the national flag – either of which will earn you some friends right off the hop. With lectures, literature readings, cinema, sport, and representatives from every region of Ukraine, it’s a crash course in Ukraine: 101 at Banderstadt. Then this is the festival for you. Located at the wonderful Tustan Medieval Fortress, the aptly named Tu Stan! Festival is part-music festival and part-medieval fair. The restored fortress sits near the Carpathian Mountains and the resort town of Truskavets along the famed medieval ‘silk route’. The castle after which the festival takes its name took its own moniker from a command fortress guards used to shout at silk route traders as they approached the gates – Tu Stan! (Stay here!). Organizers for the first festival, back in 2006, were overwhelmed when over 10,000 people turned out. Today the festival continues to grow in popularity, with a host of activities for festival-goers to experience – from medieval crafts workshops to theatre performances to lectures from a medieval university to, of course, the music! – it’s easy to see just why. A family-friendly festival, there will be plenty to see and do for children and adults alike, such as historical reenactments, a medieval fair, and concerts! So if you want to party like it’s 1399, come on down to Tu Stan!

Жанр: Етно-історичний Адреса: Урич, Сколівський р-н (110 км від Львова) Дата: 31 липня – 2 серпня Веб-сайт: www.tustan.ua/tu-stan-2015/ Музично-етнографічний фестиваль, стилізований під українське середньовіччя з усіма його атрибутами. Місцем проведення фестивалю вдало вибрано старовинну фортецю Тустань в карпатських горах. Тут буде представлена давня музика, лицарські поєдинки та середньовічний ярмарок. Відреставрована фортеця розташована недалеко від курортного міста Трускавець на знаменитому середньовічному"Шовковому шляху, що пролягав територією сучасної України. За однією з версій, назва фортеці, що слугувала митним переходом у ті давні часи, походить від команди "Тут стань!", яку віддавали купецьким валкам з різноманітним крамом її охоронці. Організатори першого фестивалю, проведеного великим успіхом у 2006 році, були вражені, величезною кількістю гостей – їх прибуло понад 10 000. LVIV fest attracted over 500,000 music lovers frustrated by the American participation in the war in Vietnam and drawn to the festival’s message of “Peace, Love, and Happiness”. Woodstock Ukraine understands these principles, which have taken on new significance since last year’s invasion by Russian forces. They’ve taken the slogan “Peace, Music, Love!” and have even ensured free entry – just like Woodstock ’69. Begun in 2012 as an offshoot of Poland’s Przystanek Woodstock, the event raises funds for the charity Serce do Serca (Heart to Heart). While music lovers are sure to be entertained by the likes of UK’s Neil Taylor, Switzerland’s Death by Chocolate, and Kharkiv’s energetic Bandurbend, there are plenty of other things to see and do during this fiveday extravaganza. Whether its theatrical performances, autograph sessions, workshops, tea ceremonies, yoga, sampling vegetarian dishes, or even canoe competitions, Woodstock Ukraine has you covered; and the best part is it’s free! Plus, its message of Peace is as important today as it has ever been.

ZaxidFest Genre: Ethno-rock Location: Magic Valley, Rodatychi, Lviv Oblast (41 km from Lviv) Date: August 14th – 16th Cost: 3-day passes run for 720-820 UAH + 95-140 UAH for camping Website: www.zaxidfest.com There is no bigger or more anticipated summer music festival in Western Ukraine than ZaxidFest. In fact, the festival is even named WestFest (Zaxid means ‘west’ in Ukrainian). The idyllic location – literally named “Magic Valley” – is a Galician paradise, surrounded by trees, streams, and lakes. This festival draws the best and most cultural – both fans and bands. Some of Ukraine’s most popular singers are set to perform, including: Haydamaky, BB, Boombox, Onuka, and Pianoboy. Now in its 7th year, the festival offers three smaller stages in addition to the main stage: a rock stage, an indie stage, and even a night stage for the night owls in the crowd! This summer LvivKlezFest Jewish Culture Festival August 1–30 from 11:00 – 22:00 Rynok Square, Arsenalna Square (behind the Arsenal Museum), Bohdan Khmelnytsky Park of Culture & Leisure (Vytovskoho St.), and various locations throughout the city The LvivKlezFest, an international festival of Jewish music, song, and dance, returns to Lviv this August. Aiming to revive the lost musical culture of Galician Jews, Leopolitans and guests of the city will have the unique opportunity to enjoy Klezmer music, dances, and song, as well as to meet the participants – famous bands, dance groups, and family choirs from all over the world, including: Ukraine, USA, Israel, Poland, and Argentina. Klezmer music is the music of Jewish ensembles, where participants do not know the notes, but are still able to express the soul of the Jewish people. More than that, Klezmer music is the sound

of joy and happiness – one of the key components of Jewish weddings. This year the festival will also offer a number of workshops on Jewish dance and handicrafts, as well as exhibitions, walking tours through the Jewish quarter and, of course, the tasting of traditional Jewish cuisine. This year’s national book fair and exhibition – the International Publishers’ Forum – will bring together over 250 publishing houses as well as over 100 writers from all over the world to present their latest books and promote masterpieces of classical literature. This year for the first time, to Lviv will come writers from Zimbabwe, China, Egypt, in addition to constant visitors of the event – authors from Belarus, Russia, Brazil, Estonia, Latvia, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Serbia, France, Finland, Israel and others. This year the Book Forum will showcase six thematic areas: historical truth; women’s issues; men’s club; culinary; comprehensive school; and children’s playground. The festival’s main theme this year is “Culture vs. Propaganda”. Within Publisher’s Forum in addition to enormous book fair, will take place several traditional literary projects – XI “Young Republic of Poets”, IX “Non-stop night of poetry and music”, III “Poetic train” and others. Also within Festival’s program will take place new cultural initiatives –Presentation of joint art-project by Yuriy Andrukhovych and band Karbido “Atlas Estremo” as well as “Week of Modern Ukrainian drama” in association with creative unit “Drabyna”. Special attention is expected to be drawn to the awarding ceremony of “The best Book of 2015” and XIV ‘Festival of children’s reading “Knigomania”. This year Book forum will showcase six thematic areas: “Historical true”, “Women issues”, “Men’s club”, “Culinary”, “Comprehensive school” and “Children playground”. The third International Eastern Partnership Culture Congress will take place in Ukraine for the first time and will bring more than 500 representatives of art and culture, government, NGOs, and other interested parties to Lviv from September 4th6th. The event will take place under the patronage of ministries from several Eastern Partnership states, including: Poland, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. The event’s theme of “The Mission of Culture During Crises” aims to establish effective and long-lasting transnational cooperation, the integration of cultural communities, and the activation of cultural dialogue. This massive event will see dozens of cultural and artistic activities held in the city. The mission of the Congress is to inspire the transfer of culture beyond borders, the sharing of ideas and experiences, and the emergence of an Eastern European identity. It allows for the exchange of artistic and cultural cooperation, the mobility of artists and works of art, and the mutual inspiration by the discovery of contemporary art from all of the participants. The “Music in Old Lviv” and “Music in Old Krakow” Festival Returns August 14-30

Some of the biggest names in classical and chamber music will make special appearances in some of the most historic spots in Lviv’s and Krakow’s city centres as part of the “Music in Old Lviv” and “Music in Old Krakow” Festival from August 14-30. Last year, National Artist of Ukraine Sergiy Burko – the creator, artistic director, and chief conductor of the Lviv Virtuosos Academic Chamber Ochestra – and Stanisław Gałoński – the co-creator and artistic director of the Music in Old Krakow Festival and founder of the Capella Cracoviensis oratorio-cantanta ensemble – launched the new Music in Old Lviv cultural initiative that became a huge success. The festival takes place over a period of 17 days and each day features concerts at a different historical venue: from churches and museums to historical courtyards to philharmonic halls. The program is specially designed to display the diversity

of Lviv’s and Krakow’s cultural traditions. Blacksmith Days July 25-26 from 10:00 in Muzeyna Square Fire, anvils, and hammers will be the order of the day at Lviv’s Muzeyna Square in late July during Blacksmith Days, which are set to showcase the traditional craft of forging and blacksmithing. Blacksmiths? Do they even still exist? Believe it or not, interest in blacksmithing has seen a resurgence in recent years as some folks are shying away from mass-produced goods in favour of finely crafted decorative art for their homes. There is something to be said for handiwork that is actually made by … a human. There are plenty of job opportunities out there for blacksmiths. Some, for example, go into architectural design, where they use their iron for making fences, window bars, hardware, furniture, lighting, or even fireplaces. People looking to add design elements to their homes or replicate historical decorations often call upon these “smiths”. Usually, architectural blacksmiths are able to copy historical ironwork to match a specific era. Not all of their work is done in front of a roaring fire. Like most modern professions, blacksmiths use computer software

programs for creating designs. They also use contemporary welding systems, new cutting techniques, and even power hammers. A power hammer is a large forging device that uses more force to hit an object than the weight of someone hitting iron with a regular hammer. We’re sure you’re very strong, but unless you’re super-human, we’re sure that a power hammer will come in handy. Want a job where you can make decorative items, tools, architectural elements, and even weapons? A career as a blacksmith might be just right for you. European Space Modelling Championship August 21-28 in Lviv (Opening Ceremony) and the Village of Hrybovychi, Zhovka Region, Lviv Oblast (Competition) The European Space Modelling Championships – the highest level of rocket building competition on the continent – will come to Ukraine for the very first time as hobbyists from 17 countries gather in Lviv from August 21st-28th for the event. Model rocket competitions are very popular in Eastern Europe, Russia, and other post-Soviet nations as well as in the UK, China, Japan, and Canada. Lviv Hosts Belarus in EURO 2016 Qualifier September 5th at 19:00, Arena Lviv Stadium Lviv is once again set to host the nation’s finest footballers, as the Football Federation of Ukraine announced that Belarus would visit Arena Lviv to play Ukraine in a Group C qualification match for next year’s EURO tournamet finals to be held in France. The match is an important one for the Ukrainians as a win is needed to keep pace with the front-running Slovaks and Spaniards. Lviv is a popular place to play for the national team as they have never lost in the city, compiling an all-time record in the city of 10 wins and 2 draws, including 4 wins and 2 draws at the new Arena Lviv. History also bodes well for the boys in blue and yellow, as they have never fallen to the Belarussian national team. In their most recent

encounter, in Belarus in October of last year, Ukraine saw a 2:0 result thanks to a late own goal and an insurance marker by midfielder Serhiy Sydorchuk. Ukraine currently sits 3rd in Group C on 12 points, while Belarus is back in 4th on 4 points. The top two teams in each group automatically qualify, as well as the 3rd place team with the best record. The remaining 3rd place teams will be forced to play in a home-and-away set to decide the final qualifying teams for the tournament in France – something the Ukrainians would like to avoid after falling at that stage four times in recent major tournament qualification. Game time is at 19:00 at Arena Lviv.

“Metanoia" by Victor Sydorenko Victor Sydorenko – one of Ukraine’s forefathers of modern art – had his festive Metanoia exhibition open at the Lviv Art Palace on June 23rd. Sydorenko is a successful painter, curator, teacher, and author of scientific and artistic texts. He has been the Vice-President of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts since 1997 and founded and has headed the Modern Art Research Institute of Ukraine since 2001. Victor’s pathway from realism to neo-avant-gardism is first of all a tribute to the full freedom of creativity of the last generation that grew up and worked under a totalitarian regime. Time, memory, and history are central ideas in all of his creative projects. In Metanoia, Sydorenko gives an advantage to the optical illusive game that is created by the dense and viscous red colour and through spacing with large-format picturesque art objects. The figures of men are stretched out and soaring in air, forced to lose all of their bearings and reference points. Metanoia hints that beyond the limits of ratio, man is no more satisfied with the notion of himself and of the outer world. The abilities of his mind are limited by something beyond comprehension. This is the moment of almost tacit realisation: cognition is not the only way of interacting with reality. Victor Sydorenko’s Metanoia is open from Tuesday – Sunday, 11:00 – 18:00, at the Lviv Palace of Arts (17 Kopernika St.). The exhibition will last from June 23rd to July 31st.

Віктор Сидоренко є успішним художником, куратором, викладачем, автором художніх інсталяцій, наукових і публіцистичних текстів. З 1997 року він є членом і віце-президентом Української академії мистецтв. У 2001 році Сидоренко заснував і очолив Інститут проблем сучасного мистецтва Академії мистецтв України. Шлях Віктора від реалізму до неоавангардизму – це насамперед данина повній свободі творчості покоління, що виросло і працювало в часи тоталітарного режиму. Час, Пам'ять та Історія – ось центральні ідеї всіх його творчих проектів. У проекті "Метанойя" художник надає перевагу грі оптичних ілюзій, які створюються завдяки використанню інтенсивного червоного кольору і великоформатних арт-об'єктів та інсталяцій. Чоловічі фігури, витягнуті і ширяючі у повітрі, змішують орієнтири і координати. Проект "Метанойя" Віктора Сидоренка натякає, що поза межами людського розуму людині потрібно більше, ніж відчуття себе і зовнішнього світу. Можливості розуму обмежені чимось поза межами розуміння. Lviv Hosts Popular Alfa Jazz Fest

Lviv played host to some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians last month as the Alfa Jazz Fest musical festival rolled through town. Considered to be one of the most important jazz music and interesting open-air festivals in Eastern Europe, the event attracted over 80 000 visitors to watch world class jazz music on stages in three wonderful locations across the city: Rynok Square, Potocky Palace, and the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Park of Culture & Leisure. Leopolitans and guests of the city were treated to internationally-renowned artists such as: the USA’s Mike Stern / Bill Evans band; 14-time Grammy Award winner, the legendary American clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Paquito D’Rivera; 10-time Grammy winner, the internationally-renowned American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Wayne Shorter; Japanese pianist and composer Hiromi; and 10-time Grammy winner George Benson. initiatives that took place as part of the Alfa Jazz Fest festivities. For example, one of the masters of the Ukrainian jazz movement – Mr. Leonid Goldstein – presented a series of jazz films. Other activities included an ethnic fashion show and the introduction of a picnic area, where festivalgoers were able to enjoy the good music on big screens while enjoying delicious food. The Eddy Rozner Alfa Jazz Music Award was introduced in 2012 and has become both an annual tradition at the festival as well as one of the most esteemed awards in jazz music. The winner is selected among recognized people that have made a considerable contribution to the development and promotion of jazz music throughout the world. The celebratory awards ceremony was held during the festival’s gala concert on the main stage at Bohdan Khmelnytsky Park of Culture, where one of the top synthesizers in jazz music – piano virtuoso and composer Herbie Hancock – was presented with the honour.

У програмі фестивалю було також багато супутніх заходів і культурних ініціатив, зокрема покази фільмів на джазову тематику від одного з майстрів українського джазового руху Леоніда Гольдштейна. Цього року для гостей було організовано джазовий пікнік, де гості мали прекрасну нагоду слухати й дивитись виступи джазових знаменитостей на великих екранах, сидячи на траві під кронами дерев. На Альфа Джаз Фест у 2012 році була заснована премія "Alfa Jazz Music Award" імені Едді Рознера, яка має всі шанси стати однією з найбільш престижних нагород в області джазової музики і вже стала щорічною традицією фестивалю. Лауреата цієї премії визначають серед відомих і визнаних осіб, які зробили значний внесок у розвиток і популяризацію джазу в усьому світі. Урочиста церемонія нагородження відбулася під час гала-концерту на головній сцені фестивалю. Цього року премія була присуджена піаністу, одному з найкращих виконавців джазової музики на синтезаторах, композитору і продюсеру Хербі Хенкоку.

VVyshyvanka Couture of the 3rd Millennium

The Vyshyvanka Couture of the 3rd Millennium fashion show, featuring outfits designed by Ukrainian designer Oksana Karavanska as well as 18th- and early 19th-Century Ukrainian clothing provided by the Museum of Ethnography, took place as one of the cultural initiatives of Alfa Jazz Fest 2015. Lviv’s Karavanska has been one of the biggest names in Ukrainian fashion for over a decade, ever since she starred in one of the country’s most popular fashion TV shows. The owner of the OK by Oksanakaravanska and the OK by Oksanakaravanska for Men brands, she also sits as a member on the influential Fashion Council of Ukraine. Her collection fuses traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanky (embroidered shirts) with elements of high fashion and is designed especially for sophisticated, confident, and independent women. In addition to the ethnic folklore trend that has become a staple of contemporary Ukrainian fashion, the collection showcases

glimpses of Ukrainian history, culture, and art from around the country. The event was hosted at the Andrey Sheptytsky Metropolitan Chamber & Gardens. The Metropolitan is a Rococo architectural monument located on Mount St. George and is especially important this year as Lviv festively celebrates Sheptytsky’s 150th birthday anniversary. Normally closed to the public, the 18th-Century park was exclusively opened to guests of Alfa Jazz Fest 2015. Event guests were even provided with the unique opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Chambers.

This year’s guest of honour was the UK’s Ambassador to Ukraine – His Excellency Simon Smith. Several other government officials, including Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, and representatives from Lviv’s business elite and media were also in attendance.

PHOTO-CASTING "FORUM LVIV FACES" Multi Ukraine, developer of the Forum Lviv shopping center, has started a striking Forum Lviv opening advertising campaign. A combination of fashion images together with the slogan ‘Meet you in the center!’ is a clear demonstration of the goal to make Forum Lviv not just the main fashion destination but also the new meeting point in the Lviv city centre As a part of pre-opening activities Forum Lviv shopping center conducted a Forum Lviv Faces photo casting on the main square in front of the Lviv Opera. This event was advertised intensively around the city and the result was a huge success, engaging more than 1,400 participants. Ten finalists will be featured in Forum Lviv’s annual advertising campaigns. Forum Lviv gives Leopolitans the opportunity to represent spectacular shopping centre in their city.

LVIV SOCIETY Lviv’s elegant Opera & Ballet Theatre was an appropriate host for the grand finale of the Miss Ukraine – Lviv Region beauty contest on June 16th. The annual contest sees some of the region’s most prominent business leaders, politicos, fashion designers, media reps, and other celebrities watch as Lviv Region’s finest ladies compete for the title of Miss Ukraine – Lviv Region and the chance to represent the region at the national Miss Ukraine contest. Last year, Lviv’s own Andriana Khasanshin was crowned Miss Ukraine – a first for a representative from the region. The finale in Lviv saw special appearances by performers MONATIK, Miya, Oleksiy Vertinskyi, and Natalya Karpa. Of the 14 beautiful, young ladies featured, Marta Maksymiv was crowned First Vice-Miss; Snizhana Tanchuk finished as Second Vice-Miss; and the lovely Maryana Skorynovych won the coveted crown of Miss Ukraine – Lviv Region 2015. Other winners included: Olga Kirych for Miss Smile; Snizhana Tanchuk for Miss Friendship; Natalia Voitynska for Miss People’s Choice; and Nina Gorinyuk for Miss Photo. Two special awards were given to Karina Boychuk and Kateryna Babiy for their active participation in various social projects.

Цього ж вечора на сцені виступили зі спеціальною програмою відомі виконавці – Наталя Карпа, Мія, Олексій Верницький, MONATIK. Серед 14 учасниць Марта Максимів була визнана першою віце-міс, Сніжана Танчук другою віцеміс, а Мар'яна Скоринович отримала корону "Міс Україна – Львівщина 2015». Leopolis Grand Prix 2015 Lviv’s rich motor racing heritage was on display from June 12-14 as the Leopolis Grand Prix rolled back into town. Leopolitans and guests of the city relived the days when cars raced along our fabled streets by watching over 130 participants from Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus race along the Lviv Triangle – from Vitovskoho St. to Stryiska St. to Heroiv Madianu St. As part of this dynamic race, the festival also featured an open-air exhibition of retro cars, special automobilethemed fashion shows, and much more! Winners were selected in five separate categories: Andriy & Yarema Kurah took the A Class in their VW Karmann Ghia (1966); Yaroslav Kurylo’s 1956 GAZ 13 won top honours in the B Class; Igor & Nazar Makogin topped the C Class in their 1968 Mercedes 115; Oleksandr Gavrylenko & Iryna Lavriv won Class D in their 1978 M-407; and Olexiy & Yulia Borysko reigned supreme in the E Class in their 1966 ZAZ 965. The Boryskos also took home the festival’s Elegancy Award for most stylish team. Congratulations to all the winners!

Prime Minister of Ukraine met business community On Thursday 25 June, the EBA Board & EBA Committee leadership met with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, his Ministerial team and the heads of the key state bodies. The off the record discussion was frank and open, with the following questions raised: -- Key concerns of business and the pace of reforms, fight against corruption -- Progress in key strategic areas – state system and public administration reform, long-awaited appointments (the Head of the State Service for Food Safety and Protection of Consumers inter alia)

Minister of Finance Yaresko said the latter will not happen -- VAT legislation in the grain industry -- E-governance and IPR protection -- Energy efficiency, and many other vital questions. The PM and his team promised to hold regular meetings with business on a quarter basis.

EBA Business Breakfast On June, 27 the EBA Business Breakfast: Zero Tolerance to Failure took place. For the first time in Lviv this event brought together top managers of Western, Eastern and Central regions of Ukraine. Business community discussed its influence on changes in Ukraine, and also shared the ideas what should business do in order to make Ukraine successful state. “All of us should devote about 20% of our free time to generate positive changes in Ukraine because here are our families, assets and business. Just choose 1-3 key directions of changes and work on them till implementation”- said Tomas Fiala, the President of EBA.

krainian President Petro Poroshenko welcomed his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komororowski to Lviv on July 2nd, where the two heads of state met for face-to-face negotiations at Lviv’s historic Potocki Palace. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Poroshenko emphasised that there remained trust, support, mutual assistance, and interaction between the Presidents of the two countries. Poroshenko was in the city to take part in the regional council meeting with Western Ukrainian security officials and law enforcers. “The struggle against corruption and smuggling”, the President said, “should become a challenge for every senior official.”

Later in the day, Poroshenko participated in the ceremony where Komorowski was awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causis of Lviv’s Ivan Franko National University. The award was presented by university rector Volodomyr Melnyk. The Ukrainian President congratulated Komororowski on the award, “I would like to be the first person to congratulate a great friend of Ukraine and a friend of mine,” said Poroshenko, “a person who made a tremendous contribution to the development of Ukrainian-Polish relations, who remains a strong advocate of Ukrainian interests in the EU.” According to Poroshenko, Ukrainian-Polish relations are at a very high level.

of EU free trade EU expert Olivier Vedrine explores coming EU-Ukraine Association Agreement opportunities About the author: Olivier Vedrine (olivier.vedrine@gmail. com) is an EU integration expert at Ukrainian law firm Proxen. He is also President of the Continental University business school in Kyiv and member of the Academic Council at the Assembly of European Regions in Strasbourg.

With the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement set to come into force on 1 January, 2016, companies across Ukraine are looking for ways to make the most of the opportunities presented by the free trade component of this landmark agreement. The ongoing conflict with Russia, which for decades had been a primary market for Ukrainian goods and services, has added a sense of urgency to the process of expanding into EU markets, creating a situation where thousands of Ukrainian companies are increasingly viewing trade with the European Union as the central component of their long-term business plans. Trade between Ukraine and the EU has already been steadily increasing for some years, allowing EU nations to collectively surpass Russia as Ukraine’s number one trade partner. However, the advent of an extensive free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU will take this relationship to an entirely new level, bringing with it enormous opportunities while creating considerable challenges for Ukrainian companies looking to adapt to EU regulations and appeal to potential new European partners. As Ukraine prepares for the full implementation of the EU Association Agreement, Lviv Today spoke to EU integration expert Olivier Vedrine about the opportunities and potential pitfalls which lie ahead. French academic Vedrine has been involved in activism and educational efforts to promote EU integration since his student days in the early 1990s, and currently serves as a member of the Academic Council of the Assembly of European Regions. A vocal advocate of Ukraine’s EU integration, Vedrine believes that the Association Agreement could serve as a watershed moment in Ukraine’s postSoviet development. However, he cautions that Ukrainian companies must first learn to navigate the Brussels bureaucracy and promote their interests at the EU institutional level, while also battling corruption and improving quality controls on the home front. Many Ukrainian companies are currently looking to expand into EU markets. LVIV TODAY | Summer 2015

LVIV interview Which areas of EU regulatory policy offer the biggest challenges to Ukrainian exporters? While external economic and financial assistance are essential, trade and investment are also key instruments in helping secure long-term sustainability for Ukraine. All Ukrainian companies stand to benefit enormously from the ambitious DCFTA trade deal with the EU which is part of the Association Agreement. For example, Ukrainian exporters will save almost half a billion euros annually due to reduced EU import duties. Ukrainian agriculture will benefit from cuts in duties on agricultural and processed agricultural products of almost EUR 400 million. The different levels of economic development of the EU and Ukraine are reflected by the asymmetrical nature of the Association Agreement. It is designed to provide Ukraine with favourable treatment, for example, through the faster and broader opening of EU markets, combined with a longer period for the implementation of similar measures on the Ukrainian side. The European Commission stands ready to react quickly to ensure the rapid provisional application of the AA/DCFTA. Which sectors of the Ukrainian economy are best positioned to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the free trade dimension of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement? Ukrainian agriculture will be a key beneficiary, enjoying cuts in duties on agricultural and processed agricultural products of almost EUR 400 million. Energy and energy security, as well as affordable prices, are essential for the stability and security of Ukraine. The EU will work with the government in Ukraine, including through budget support, to ensure the long-term diversification of supplies and to make sure that the Ukrainian gas transit system continues to be an essential transit route for gas supplies to Europe. As such, the European Commission will continue to work with the government in Ukraine to modernize its gas transit system in cooperation with the EIB, EBRD and World Bank, as gas sector reforms in line with European Energy Community commitments are carried out. Provided that certain conditions are fulfilled, an initial loan could be possible in the near future. Few Ukrainian companies have significant experience of lobbying EU institutions to protect their interests. What key tips could you offer for Ukrainian companies looking to make themselves heard in the Brussels corridors of power? in the EU is central to the study of modern European politics and economics. Ukrainian companies need to know how to deploy instruments of influence to make themselves heard in EU institutions. The Treaty of Lisbon introduced a new dimension of lobbying at the European level that is different from most national lobbying. Lobbying in the EU is not to be confused with lobbying in Ukraine! At the national level, lobbying is more a matter of personal and informal relations between officials and the national authorities, whereas lobbying at the European Union level is increasingly a part of the political decision-making process, and thus part of the legislative process. ‘European interest representation’ is a key part of the new participatory democracy emerging within the European Union. I think Ukraine as a whole, and individual Ukrainian companies, need to be more vocally represented in the European Union, and need to establish permanent representation in order to promote their own European interests. Adhering to EU regulations represents a significant investment for many Ukrainian companies. What advice would you give to companies to allow them to avoid unnecessary expenses while adapting to meet EU standards? Ukrainian companies have to organize themselves and should seek to share the burden of investments by engaging competent law firms and experienced officials to represent their interests among EU institutions. I think also that Ukrainian law firms should be looking to provide some training about EU lobbying to Ukrainian companies in order to better explain how EU policy works. What are the most important first steps for any newcomer Ukrainian companies seeking to establish a presence in EU markets? The first step for any Ukrainian companies looking to break into EU markets is to find the right place, at the right time, and with the right contacts! Engaging experienced professionals with large EU networks of contacts is the first step. What steps do you think the Ukrainian authorities should consider in order to support Ukrainian companies looking to develop their business interests inside the EU? The Ukrainian authorities need to organize economic diplomacy and develop a broad strategy to support Ukrainian companies in their quest to expand their business interests inside the EU. The support of the Ministry of Economic Development or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can be very useful for Ukrainian companies

seeking to expand inside the EU. This approach has long been central to US strategy in its dealings with the EU. By adopting EU standards, Ukrainian exporters will theoretically also gain increased access to global markets. How can Ukrainian companies take advantage of these global opportunities? There is no question that Ukrainian companies will gain global advantages by adopting EU standards. However, the top priority for Ukrainian producers is to improve quality norms. They cannot product products to the kind of quality standards common in the previous Soviet era if they are serious about international expansion. The biggest advantage Ukraine enjoys is the country’s strategic position. Combined with the adoption of EU standards, this should prove a winning combination. It also enjoys excellent access to the Middle East through growing business ties with Turkey. The Ukraine-EU Association Agreement is expected to attract investment into Ukraine. Which Ukrainian industries are bestplaced to attract EU investment? Economic support from the EU currently takes the form of both macro financial and development assistance. The European Commission is ready to mobilize some EUR 3 billion from the EU budget in the coming years, with the understanding that a substantial part of this money can be made rapidly available to help Ukraine address its more urgent needs, including stabilizing the financial situation and supporting the functioning of the country’s administration. Ukraine needs stabilization in order to attract international investments. In this context, the economic support of the EU is very important. First and foremost, international investors who are theoretically interested in Ukraine seek stability. They are also waiting to see some positive results of the fight against corruption and the reform process which the Ukrainian administration is currently committed to. To answer the question directly, I think the five Ukrainian sectors best placed to attract international investment are the agricultural sector, energy sector, raw materials sector, chemical industries sector, and metalurgy sector.

Ukraine Downs Luxembourg in Lviv

Over 21,000 football fans saw Ukraine keep their EURO 2016 qualification dreams alive with a neat 3:0 defeat of Luxembourg at Arena Lviv on June 14th. The pesky Luxembourgers – who started their qualification campaign strongly with a draw against Belarus – managed to keep the Ukrainian side off the board in the first half, despite dominant form from the home side. Their fortunes changed shortly after half when Ukrainian forward Artem Kravets scored from a fortunate bounce. Substitute Denys Harmash put the boys in blue and yellow ahead by two on a nice header on the 57’ minute, before midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka rounded out the scoring with a strike 4 minutes from time. The result leaves the Ukrainian national team’s perfect record in Lviv in tact with no defeats in 12 games and sees the team sit third in Group C qualifying behind Slovakia and Spain. The Blue and Yellows will put that record on the line again in September when they host 4th-place Belarus – a team they have never lost to – at Arena Lviv.

Раніше, у відбіркових матчах чемпіонату Європи 2016 команда Люксембургу зіграла внічию з командою Білорусі. У першому таймі гра українців захвату на трибунах не викликала. Доля матчу вирішилась у другій половині, коли нападник нашої збірної Артем Кравець забив м’яча у ворота суперника, сам того не сподіваючись. Денис Гармаш, що вийшов на заміну, повів нашу дружину вперед, і незабаром показав, як треба забивати гол головою на 57 хвилині, а півзахисник Євген Коноплянка закріпив перемогу влучним ударом за 4 хвилини до закінчення поєдинку. Позиція української збірної залишається незмінною – без поразок у 12 іграх і стабільне третє місце в групі С відбірного турніру, відразу позаду команд Словаччини та Іспанії. Ukrainian athletes had a strong showing at the firstever European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan last month. Led by gymnast Oleg Verniaiev’s 3-medal showing and powerful performances in the combat events such as wrestling, boxing, and judo, Ukraine finished with 8 gold, 14 silver, and 24 bronze medals. The 46 medals were good for 5th on the medal table – just one medal behind 3rd-place Great Britain and 4th-place Italy. The European Games were set-up by Europe’s National Olympic Committees as an opportunity for some of the continent’s finest athletes to compete against each other, foster a spirit of European solidarity, and to gives European athletes among their first chances to qualify for the Summer Olympics next year in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Over 6,000 athletes from 40 European countries competed in 20 sporting events. Lviv athletes competed with Europe’s best and 5 Leopolitans brought home medals from Baku. Lviv was well-represented on the archery pitch, with three Leopolitans winning medals – Heorhiy Ivanytskyy won gold alongside fellow Leopolitan Markiyan Ivashko and 2008 Olympic champion Viktor Ruban in the men’s team competition, while Veronika Marchenko took bronze in the women’s team event. Ivanytskyy won his second medal of the competition when the Ukrainian mixed team took bronze. Lviv athletes were also successful on the mat – both of the gymnastic and wrestling kind. Anastasiya Voznyak won two medals in rhythmic gymnastics – silver in group ribbon and bronze in group clubs and hoops; while on the wrestling mat 24-year-old Vasyl Shuptar managed bronze in the 61-kg freestyle event.

Українські спортсмени успішно виступили на перших в історії Європейських Іграх, що пройшли у столиці Азербайджану, Баку, минулого місяця. Українська команда в підсумку завоювала 8 золотих, 14 срібних і 24 бронзові медалі. Лідером у медальному заліку став гімнаст Олег Верняєв – він здобув 2 золоті і 1 срібну медаль. У загальному заліку українська команда завоювала 46 медалей і 5 місце, відразу після команд Італії та Великобританії. Національні олімпійські комітети країн-учасниць Європейських ігор розглядали ці змагання, що пройшли, загалом, в дусі олімпійської солідарності, як підготовку і перевірку перед літніми Олімпійськими іграми наступного року в Ріоде-Жанейро. Понад 6000 спортсменів з 40 європейських країн змагалися у 20 спортивних дисциплінах. Львівські спортсмени не осоромили свою країну і своє місто у змаганнях з найкращими і п’ятеро львів’ян привезли додому медалі з Баку. Львів був добре представлений на полі для стрільби з лука, де троє львів’ян завоювали медалі – Георгій Іваницький виграв золото разом з Маркіяном Івашком та олімпійським чемпіоном 2008 року Віктором Рубаном в чоловічому командному заліку, а Вероніка Марченко завоювала бронзу в командному заліку серед жінок. Другу медаль Г. Іваницький здобув, коли українська змішана команда зайняла третє місце. Львівські спортсмени також були успішними на татамі і на гімнастичному килимі. Анастасія Возняк виграла дві медалі у художній гімнастиці – срібло у групових вправах зі стрічкою і бронзу в групових вправах з булавами і обручами; на борцівському килимі 24-річний Василь Шуптар завоював бронзову медаль в категорії до 61 кг у вільній боротьбі.

Eurofan 2015: Bulgarian Football Fans – Champions of Lviv EuroFan

Lviv’s SKIF Stadium hosted the annual international fan-festival for football supporters from several different European countries from June 25-28. This year’s event, now in its 9th year, was organized by the Karpaty NGO together with its partners. The festival brought together 24 supporters teams from 17 European countries– Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Estonia, Moldova, Latvia, Ukraine, as well as amateur fans’ teams of: Copenhagen (Denmark), Leyton Orient (England), Heerenveen (the Netherlands), Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia), Flora Tallinn (Estonia), Dinamo Minsk (Belarus), Slovacko (Czech Republic), Dukla Banska Bystrica, Spartak Myjava (both – Slovakia), Zimbru (Moldova), Dinamo Bucharest (Romania), Karpaty (Ukraine) and team of Ukrainian journalists. Fans of Belarus’ Dinamo Minsk knocked off Copenhagen supporters in one semifinal, while the Bulgarian team defeated the Belarussian team in the other. In the final, the Bulgarian fans scored a key goal to defeat the Dinamo Minsk supporters 1:0 and capture the EuroFan 2015 championship. The professional event was well-received by the participants and the NGOs thank the teams for their kind donations.

Lviv hosted Regional Championship During three days Lviv hosted Regional Championship on Equestrian sport. Participants of the event competed in competitive dressage and show jumping. For the regional Cup trophy in competitive dressage competed 35 riders and as winners came Khrystyna Zalizna (M1 class), Roksolana Kovalska (Preliminary prize), Kateryna Ivanchuk (Team prize) and Anastasiya Nazimok (children category). In show jumping competed 60 riders in 7 categories of different complexity. Among winners in 7 categories came 21 rider. Regional competitions come as preparation to the National Championships and International competitions. In the National Championships on show jumping, which will take place next month, Lviv region will be represented by Elizaveta Rzhotkevych and Bohdan Dzydzan. In National Championship on Eventing (also known as horse trials) from Lviv region will come internationally recognized rider Petro Plekan, who will be also taking part in the upcoming competitions in Poland.

Захід був організований НВО "Карпати" разом з партнерами, які активно підтримують це спортивне свято протягом 9 років. Цього року фестиваль зібрав 24 команди підтримки з 17 європейських країн – Ірландії, Швеції, Фінляндії, Словенії, Болгарії, Білорусі, Грузії, Естонії, Молдови, Росії, України, а також самодіяльні команди уболівальників з Копенгагена (Данія), Leyton Orient (Англія), Heerenveen (Нідерланди), "Динамо" Тбілісі (Грузія), "Флора" Таллінн (Естонія), "Динамо" Мінськ (Білорусь), "Словацко" (Чехія), "Дукла" Банська-Бистриця, "Спартак" Міява (Словаччина), "Зімбру" (Молдова), "Динамо" Бухарест (Румунія), "Карпати" (Україна) і команда українських журналістів. Змагання пройшли на високому професійному рівні, за що були вдячні учасники й гості фестивалю. Такі змагання кіннотників – це свого роду генеральна підготовка до майбутніх всеукраїнських та міжнародних змагань. В національному чемпіонаті з конкуру, який відбудеться наступного місяця, Львівську область будуть представляти Єлизавета Ржоткевич і Богдан Дзидзан. У чемпіонаті України з триборства нашу область буде представляти майстер спорту міжнародного класу Петро Плекан, який після цього поїде на змагання до Польщі..

There is a great deal of responsibility laid on the medical staff as they have to interpret correctly manifestations of a disease in order to define character of health problem and ways of its treatment. “Center of physical rehabilitation “Innovo” (translated from Latin as “renovation”) was founded in 2009. In 2014 the center received medical license and started providing services as “Physical therapy and pain management center” in both children’s and grown-ups departments. Western Ukraine’s Underground Adventures There is always something new to discover about our country; we never stop learning and exploring new wonders of nature. Above ground, the mountains, rivers, animals and birds keep us mesmerized, but what few know is that there is a world underground that is worth exploring and studying. Speleology is the study of caves and other underground karsts. What interests speleologists is the history, physical structures and the life forms that are found in these underground realms. Speleology and caving go hand in hand, becoming an attraction in Ukraine and an activity that many enjoy. As you enter a cave you are transported to an alien world with its own climate, plant and animal life. A variety of sport nonequipped caves can be investigated along with the tour operator's experienced instructors. The amazing underground formations of stalagmites and stalactites with leave you breathless. Western Ukraine: A Caver’s Paradise Generally speaking, it is Crimea that is known as the birthplace of speleology in Ukraine, however Western Ukraine is still the most popular location for cavers and speleologists. With more than a hundred caves to explore, visitors to the country are encouraged to take on the challenge of caving and explore a dark world that is filled with beauty and unexpected surprises. Most of the caves in Western Ukraine are categorized as small, while some caves fall into the category of big ones. To describe a cave as big, the cave generally has a length of more than five hundred meters and is a hundred meters and deeper. Western Ukraine is famous by large amount of gypsum caves. Here, within Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Khmelnytsky regions, can be found enormous gypsum layer spaces of karst origin which hide over 15 caves. Among these caves are horizontal and of labyrinth type, several hundred meters in length and two hundred kilometers, 30-50 meters in depth. Among huge variety of Western Ukraine’s caves several are interesting by its structure: some of them form high galleries and narrow passages, and far in depth they can astonish you with gigantic halls over 10 meters in height. Optymistychna Cave – The Largest Cave in Eurasia However, the most interesting cave is without any doubt, Optymistychna, a gypsum cave located near Korolivka village of Ternopil region, which with its 230 km of mapped passageways is considered to be the fourthlongest cave in the world, (after Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave and Sistema Ox Bel Ha) and is the longest cave in Eurasia. Optymistychna cave was discovered by a group of Lviv speleologists led by M. Savchyn in 1966. The story of this discovery is the following. An intensive development of speleological movement begins in early 60’s in Ukraine. In April 1965, a group of Lviv speleologists came across the traces of a big unknown cavity. A small stream that disappeared underground at the bottom of a karst crater in the forest near the village of Korolivka, led deep into the large gypsum solid mass. Strong air draft from a gap above

the stream indicated the presence of volumetric cavities in mountain rocks. Entering the cave was done in a year. After two days of excavation on May 8, 1966 at 14.00 a team led by Myron Savchyn first got into an unknown cave and followed its passageways the first hundred meters. It was called Optymistychna. Since then a regular exploration, trailbreaking and mapping of the cave by the expeditions of Lviv speleoclub “Cyclops” began. The cave is horizontal, of a labyrinth type, embedded in 20-25-meter thick layer of gypsum at a depth of 60-80 m. It consists of 10 relatively isolated areas, interconnected by one or more passageways. The cave is not flooded despite that there are several small lakes with a relatively constant level. The biggest of them is Aqva vitae with surface area of 82 m2. In addition there are several water sources, subject to regional fluctuations of water level. During its peak, which can last for several years, "Fresh Water" area and the southwest of the Central area are partially subjected to flooding. The entrance part and a blocked cave entrance can be flooded with seasonal floods for a period of several days up to 1-2 weeks. Since 1968, the labyrinth research has been carried out from underground based camps located in different parts of the cave near various water sources. Since then great attention has been focused on the creation of freight routes in the cave and their constant improvement, in particular, providing underground based camps with fixed telephone lines. The system of freight tracks and underground based camps provides chances for research and at the same time is an objective cave protection that supports a balance of ecological system "cave-man" during long term trailbreaking. It is Big – But is it Getting Bigger? Since 1968 apart from Ukrainian speleologists, speleologists of many countries of the world: Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, France, England, Russia and Byelorussia worked in Lviv expeditions in Optymistychna cave. In the late 80's there was a change of researchers generations. Cavers of youth club "Motherland" of Lviv Centre of Children and Youth Arts of Halychyna started with simultaneous opening of the cave extension in two directions to the west and east of Anaconda area in January 1988. Inheriting achievements, methods and problems of Optymistychna cave from speleoclub "Cyclops", young cavers continue studies. Expeditions of speleoclub "Batkivshchyna" (Motherland) carried out trailbreaking and mapping of the last 40 km of the labyrinth. At the time of joint map compiling (January 1997) the total length of all passageways of the cave was 192 km. A new discovery of the great extension of Optymistychna cave (in its southeast-western part) was made during the January (1997) by an expedition of a speleoclub "Motherland". According to two research expeditions (in April and July, 1997) the total length of the cave exceeded 200 km. The extension develops towards a significant and very promising, due to geological features, gypsum solid mass, where, according to our forecasts, labyrinths probably exist, exceeding in total length the old part of Optymistychna cave. Trailbreaking continues. For the present day, there have been more than 50 expeditions since 1970ies, but exploration has slowed significantly in recent years, and very little surveying is currently being done. As for 2005 the total length of all caves labyrinths is more then 240.5 km and square is about 2 hectares. It is included in Guinness book as the longest gypsum cave in the world, and in 2008 the cave won the special nomination as the Natural Wonder of Ukraine. In summer, adventure tour operators in Western Ukraine, often offer visitors the opportunity to explore the mysteries and wonders of the caves. Each party is accompanied by experienced instructors and speleologists, and travel with tents and food supplies as some trips can last for a couple of days, depending on the requirements of visitors.
