viv would be an ideal location to host the Winter Olympics. Our idyllic old town is an ideal place for travelling fans and athletes to gather, the short drive to the mountains will allow visitors to fall in love with Western Ukrainian countryside, and the global extravaganza is the perfect place to show off Lviv’s sporting heritage. It’s why the city initially bid for the 2022 Winter Games, before having to abandon that dream due to the conflict in the East. It’s also why Serhiy Bubka, the President of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee, was in town last month to announce that Lviv will bid for the 2030 Winter Games. While Lviv showed off its hosting ‘chops’ to great acclaim during EURO 2012, the city will have to improve infrastructure – including finally building a new stadium! – if we want the chance to show the world what we’re made of. LVIV’S RICH SPORTING HERITAGE Lviv has long been known as a hot-bed of sports in Central Europe. Each June, for example, we celebrate the Leopolis Grand Prix to mark when Lviv was home to one of the world’s most important auto races in the late 1920s. The city is the birthplace of Ukrainian football in – you can even head to Stryiskyi Park to check out the monument. Football roots run deep in the city – our

national team has never dropped a game in front of the patriotic Leopolitan crowd. Just this autumn we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the greatest sporting moment in the city’s history – when our beloved FC Karpaty captured the Soviet Cup! (You can read about it later in this issue.) We continue to boast a wealth of Olympic stars, with the likes of Kateryna Kryva, Khrystyna Pohranychna, and Pavlo Korostylov – all regularly featured in the pages of Lviv Today – strong medal hopefuls at next year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Yes, Lviv’s sporting heritage makes it an ideal locale for an Olympic spectacle. EURO 2012’S LASTING LEGACY It wasn’t that long ago when Lviv hosted Europe during EURO 2012 and you can still see the legacies from that event. Our wonderful Arena Lviv regularly hosts Ukrainian national team games, world championship boxing, major international singers and music festivals, and some of the city’s most important conferences. Our new D. Halytskyi International Airport gets busier and busier each year and now flies Leopolitans to some of the finest cities in Europe. The city even managed to finally get the Sykhiv tramline up-and-running! Hotels were built, streets were refurbished, and the whole city was polished to a shine. STADIUM PLEASE! In his comments to the media while in Lviv, Bubka mentioned that bidding for the 2030 Olympic Games “is not easy work, but we have enough time to plan everything and build the necessary infrastructure”. Among other things, this means the long-awaited multipurpose stadium. This was supposed to be built years ago – when Lviv was to host Eurobasket 2015. In fact, ground was even broke on the project. But, like Lviv’s 2022 Olympic bid, the event was scuttled due to the conflict in the East. Nothing has been done since – even after Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy promised to build a stadium within a year if Lviv were awarded Eurovision 2017. With the promise of a major sporting event, and the tourism that it promises to attract, maybe the 2030 Olympic bid will finally get this project rolling. Feel the spirit of Christmas with some of the season’s most popular jazz hits when the Lviv Philharmonic Theatre hosts the Very Same Christmas Jazz concert on 11 December. The Urban Gypsy team and the charming Olga Chernyshova will put you in a festive mood for the holiday season with jazz compositions of such holiday classics as White Christmas, Let It Snow, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and the Christmas Song. Urban Gypsy is well-known for its high-quality, critically-acclaimed music. The group’s guitar jazz is always vibrant and hypnotic, leading to high-profile collaborations with artists like Pianoboy and Anna-Maria. Dmitry Kushnirov and Mikhail Levit are on guitar, Mykola Kisthenov plays double bass, and Matvey Mironov is on the violin. Chernyshova is one of the most well-repected graduates of the R.M. Glier Institute of Music and plays with ‘O’, a group that combines electronic, folk, and soul. She also collaborates with many top Ukrainian groups, including Jamala and Freedom-Jazz. The Lviv Philharmonic Theatre will play host to Ukrainian pianist / composer Lubomyr Melnyk on 10 December. World-renowned for his fast piano-playing technique, he can play up to 19.5 notes on each hand every second. Setting the speed record in 1985, he also holds the record for the most notes played in an hour, with an average speed of 14 notes on each hand every second. Today, Melnyk is best known for his groundbreaking “continuous music” technique, where he plays very rapid, complex patterns of notes while holding down the sustain pedal to produce overtones. The result is a dense cascade of sound that can be trance-inducing for both the performer and listener. It reminds of the mind-bending complexity of Conlon Nacarrow, but Melnyk’s melodic compositions never sacrifice grace or heart for the sake of technical ability. Born in Germany and raised in Canada, Melnyk also composes orchestra and chamber works. MELOVIN PRESENTS ‘OCTOPUS’ 17 December at 19.00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city will have the chance to catch an exclusive performance by Ukraine’s Melovin when he presents his latest album ‘Octopus’ alongside a symphony orchestra at Lviv’s glamorous Opera & Ballet Theatre on 17 December. Born Konstantyn Bocharov in Odesa in 1997, Melovin shot to fame after his performance on Ukraine’s X-Factor. After auditioning for – and failing to advance on – the show three times, he went on to win the 2015 edition. He then released his sings ‘Ne Odinokaya’ in 2016, before finishing third in Ukraine’s ‘Vidbir 2017’, the contest used to select the Ukrainian entrant for Eurovision. After gaining a popular following in the country through that performance, he went on to win the 2018 nomination with his song ‘Under the Ladder’. He performed the track at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal, where he finished 17th. He released his latest hit this summer, ‘Ty’ (You), a modern pop song about love, passion, and obsession with a mix of rock, soul, and funk music. Concert tickets cost between 390–1350 UAH. GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL 22–26 November at Planeta Kino Cinema in Forum Lviv (7A Pid Dubom St.) For 25 years now, the German Film Festival has offered a unique insight into the cinematic world of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Hosted by the Goethe Institute in Ukraine along with Arthaus Traffic, this year’s exciting event began features five films and a special screening of the documentary ‘Vom Bauen der Zukunft – 100 Jahre Bauhaus’. Against the backdrop of Bauhaus, one of the most influential architectural schools of the 20th Century that is still setting the pattern for the way we live today, the film shares not only art history, but also the history of an era that stretches from the early 20th Century to today. This year’s main programme includes the film biography ‘Gundermann’, about East German singer and writer Gerhard Gundermann and his struggles with music, life as a coal miner, and dealings with the East German secret police (STASI); the thriller ‘Der Goldene Handschuh’, about a serial killer that strikes fear in the hearts of the residents of Hamburg in the early ‘70s; the drama ‘Werk Ohne Autor’, about German artist Kurn Barnert, who after escaping East Germany into West Germany, is tormented by his childhood under the Nazis and East German regime; and the sci-fi drama ‘In My Room’. ФЕСТИВАЛЬ НІМЕЦЬКОГО КІНО 22–26 листопада в "Планета кіно", "Форум Львів" (вул. Під дубом 7А) Уже 25 років фестиваль німецького кіно дає змогу львівській публіці довідатись більше про кінематографічний світ Німеччини, Австрії та Швейцарії. Цьогорічний захід, який проводить Інститут Гете в Україні, а також Arthaus Traffic, запропонує п’ять фільмів та спеціальний показ документального фільму Vom Bauen der Zukunft – 100 Jahre Bauhaus. У фільмі розповідається про Баухаус, одну з найвпливовіших архітектурних шкіл XX століття, яка має величезний вплив на розвиток дизайну в Європі та світі, яким ми живемо сьогодні, фільм поділяє не лише історію мистецтва, але й історію епохи, яка тягнеться з ранньої 20 століття до сьогодні. До основної програми цього року увійшли, зокрема, біографічна стрічка "Гундерманн" про східнонімецького співака та письменника Герхарда Гундермана та його боротьбу, як він працював шахтарем, та як його переслідувала таємна поліція Штазі; трилер "Золота рукавичка" про серійного вбивцю, який вселяв страх у серцях жителів Гамбурга на початку 70-х років; драма "Робота без автора" про німецького художника Курта Барнерта, якого після втечі з НДР до Західної Німеччини мучать спогади дитинства під нацистським та східнонімецьким режимом та науково-фантастична драма "У моїй кімнаті". The term “Marché aux puces” literally translates to – you guessed it – “flea market”. First established in Paris around 1870, the term was adopted ostensibly because of the flea-infested furniture and other wares that were sold at the market just outside the city limits. Years later, similar-type markets popped-up around Europe. If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind antiques or other interesting bric-a-brac, you’ll find bargains galore at Lviv’s-own TLUM & KRAM flea market. It’s funny how perceptions can change when you’re rambling through a flea market. Items that wouldn’t even catch your eye in another setting – a battered dial phone, retro outfits from the ‘60s, or tourist guides from Soviet times – can easily become the objects of desire when laid out by charmingly eccentric stallholders. One man’s junk is really another man’s joy in this bazaar of the bizarre. And while there has been the inevitable influx of generic tourist stands selling the same ‘I Love Lviv’ t-shirts, the flea market is an invaluable source of second-hand trinkets and time-worn curios. Вітовського, 57) Кажуть, що вперше блошині ринки, на яких можна купити всяку всячину (навіть дресировану блоху) з’явились близько 1870 року в Парижі біля північних укріплень міста. Потім, на зразок паризьких, подібні ринки виникли по всій Європі. І саме на таких ринках можна знайти майже все, чого шукає колекціонер старовини, а часом, навіть більше. Саме з такою метою організовується і ринок TLUM & KRAM у Львові. У львівській художній галереї "Львіварня" 13 листопада відбудеться відкриття виставки Мар’яна Бесаги Prima motus. Цей львівський автор відомий і високо цінується в Україні та Європі за те, що він є не лише живописцем, а й лектором, мистецьким експертом та керівником культурних подій. Випускник Академії образотворчих мистецтв ім. Яна Матейка в Кракові, магістратура з відзнакою: живопис на полотні (2003), Мар’ян Бесага – доктор мистецтв (2010), доцент кафедр академічного живопису та менеджменту мистецтва (2012); завідувач кафедри міжнародних відносин Львівської національної академії мистецтв. Lviv’s Lvivarnya Museum & Art Gallery will play host to the opening of the ‘Prima Motus’ exhibition by Marian Besaha on 13 November. The Lviv-based artist is well-known and highly appreciated in Ukraine and Europe for not only being a painter, but also a lecturer, critic, and cultural events manager. A graduate of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, he now heads the Department of International Relations at the Lviv National Academy of Arts. He has been recognised with many awards, including the Cultural Scholarship of the Lviv Culture Department, the Art & Culture Studies Award by the Lviv Regional State Administration, and second prize at the International Biennial Pastel Exhibition in Nowy Sacz (Poland) for a series of pastel drawings. His ‘Prima Motus’ exhibition will present Leopolitan art aficionados and guests of the city with a series of art featuring his perception of the world’s genesis, brought to life through the flexible language of abstract paintings. The creation moment followed by the process of evolution is depicted in simple, laconic forms and universal symbols. The exceptional choice of colours in the series has a powerful impact on the audience and provides the pieces with an additional emotional impact that complements the content and form of the art. eopolitan artists Volodymyr Bohuslavskyi and Serhiy Hai were both recognised at the recent Florence Biennale, a major contemporary art exhibition in Italy that showcases outstanding pieces of international contemporary art. During each event, an international jury comprised of distinguished scholars, art historians, and critics confer the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Award to the best exhibiting artists. Artists compete for awards in a variety of categories, including Drawing & Calligraphy, Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Ceramics, Textile & Fibre, Jewellery, Photography, New Media, Video, Installation, and Performance Art. Bohuslavski was recognised as a Top 5 painter, while Hai received special commendation by the President. Every other year, the Florence Biennale enlivens the Medicean city with a programme of events, including conferences, displays, performances, workshops, and lectures attracts over 600 artists from 70 countries and offers them and their audiences the opportunity to engage with art and culture and to learn about the theme of that year’s festival. ітній сезон кіно-блокбастерів може вже й закінчився, але це не означає, що більше немає чого дивитись. Насправді більшість найкращих фільмів року не випускаються майже до Різдва, тому поки що не надто прив'язуйтесь до рейтингу найкращих фільмів. Серед найбільш очікуваних випусків сезону – польсько-українсько-британський фільм "Містер Джонс" ("Ціна правди"). У ньому розповідається історія ідеалістичного молодого валлійського журналіста – головного персонажа, який бреде заметеними снігами просторами України, спостерігаючи на власні очі жахи голодомору 1932-33 років. Весь обсяг виробництва зерна в регіоні був проданий за кордон для фінансування швидкої модернізації радянської промисловості, при цьому сталінський режим вважав мільйони життів українців ціною, яку варто заплатити за нову утопію.

Перша сценаристка Андреа Халупа взяла натхнення від свого українського діда та роману "Колгосп Тварин" Джорджа Оруелла, щоб написати цю драму про сталінський голодомор в Україні. У ролях: Джеймс Нортон ("Щаслива долина", "Війна і мир"), Пітер Сарсгаард ("Смертник", "Людина в залізній масці"), Ванеса Кірбі ("Корона", "Великі сподівання") та Джозеф Маул ("Гра престолів"). Стрічка польської режисерки Агнєшки Голланд вшановує героїчні зусилля Гарета Джонса показати світу злодіяння Голодомору. Джонса грає Дж. Нортон, який створює образ ідеаліста-інтелектуала та людини дії з Уельсу. Очевидно, що коли було відкрито правду, Джонс став героєм в Україні, а висвітлення подій того часу Уолтером Дюранті згодом редакція його власного видання визнала "одним з найгірших репортажів, що з'являлись у цій газеті". Джонс був посмертно нагороджений Українським орденом "За заслуги" 2008 року. "Містер Джонс" – це фільм про те, як слід остерігатись брехні, яку подають вам ЗМІ та ваш уряд. he summer blockbuster season for movies may be over, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing left worth seeing this year. In fact, most of the year’s best films aren’t released until near Christmas, so don’t get too attached to your best-films-of-theyear rankings just yet. Among the most anticipated releases of the season is the Polish-Ukrainian-British film Mr. Jones (The Price of Truth). It tells the story of an idealistic, young Welsh journalist – the title character – that trudges through miles of kneedeep snow in Ukraine, witnessing first-hand the horrors of the 1932-33 genocidal famine known as the Holodomor. The entirety of the region’s grain production was sold abroad to finance the rapid modernisation of Soviet industry, with the Stalin regime regarding the millions of ethnic Ukrainians as a price worth paying for the new utopia.

First-time screenwriter Andrea Chalupa was inspired by her Eastern Ukrainian grandfather and George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ to script this forthright, valuable drama about Stalin’s genocidal famine in Ukraine. The cast includes James Norton (Happy Valley, War & Peace), Peter Sarsgaard (Dead Man Walking, The Man in the Iron Mask), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown, Great Expectations), and Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones). Directed by Polish director Agnieszka Holland, the biopic commemorates the heroic efforts of Gareth Jones to bring the atrocities of the Holodomor to the world. Jones is played by Norton, who brings his A-game to the film through a muscular, sympathetic performance as the idealist intellectual and man of action from Wales.

The film begins slowly as young Jones – having already made a splash by interviewing Hitler – uses his London government contacts with David Lloyd George (Kenneth Cranham) to get official permission to travel to the USSR on a mission to interview Stalin and discover the truth about the Soviet Union’s colossal economic expansion and apparently successful five-year plan. At first, Jones is restricted to Moscow and condemned to hang around the louche and cynical journo-expat scene, headed by Pulitizer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Walter Duranty. When Jones arrives in the snowy desolation of Eastern Ukraine, he discovers that Stalin was starving millions of Ukrainians to death. Jones releases the news to the Western press in March 1933 and it was immediately dismissed by Duranty and others as “a big scare story”. Obviously, when the truth was discovered, Jones became a hero in Ukraine while Duranty’s coverage of the famine was later regarded by the editorial board of his own paper as “some of the worst reporting to appear in this newspaper”. Jones was posthumously awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit for exceptional services to Ukraine in 2008. Mr. Jones is a film about being wary of the lies being fed to you by your media and your government. The world premiere of the film took place at the Berlin Film Festival in February and was named to the European Film Academy’s long list. Mr. Jones will be released across Ukraine on 28 November – just days after Ukraine marks Holodomor Memorial Day (23 November) – and you can catch the film in Lviv at Planeta Kino and Multiplex cinemas.

Львів’янка Мар’яна Грицина створює живописні полотна у модній сьогодні акриловій техніці та випускає свою лінію одягу під брендом Grytsyna. Її фешн дебют, як дизайнера розпочався зовсім недавно. Цього літа вийшла перша лімітована колекція T-shirt SS19 "be with Grytsyna", яка досить скоро набула популярності серед молоді і не тільки. Малювати – завжди було для мене хобі, скільки себе пам’ятаю. Але серйозно, все почалось з портрету, який я написала 5 років тому у африканському стилі. На даний час робота зберігається у приватній колекції. Про що Ваші роботи? Про легкість, любов до свободи і саму любов. Я по гороскопу Рак – а це знак зодіаку, яким керують емоції. Так, наприклад, було з однією із моїх перших робіт, яку я створила, будучи закоханою, всього за один день (Сміюся). Саме емоції і вкладаю у кожну свою нову роботу.

В цьому і є індивідуальність кожного. Але завжди ловлю кайф, коли бачу на вулиці людину в T-shirt by Grytsyna, чи читаю позитивні відгуки та повідомлення – подяку у себе в профілі. Це надихає!!! З кожним роком в Україні зростає кількість нових імен як в Art, так і в Fashion індустрії. Ви розумієте, що розвиватись доведеться в умовах високої конкуренції? В чому на Вашу думку Ваша перевага? LVIV SOCIETY LVIV INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM The annual Lviv International Economic Forum was held in Lviv from 31 October – 1 November. Organised by the Lviv Regional State Administration, this forum is a powerful platform for national and international actors to discuss important issues related to the competitiveness of regions, their strategic development, and their economic growth. The forum aims to present Ukraine as a safe place for business, foster dialogue between government and business, intensify cross-border cooperation, attract investments, and establish useful business ties between Ukrainian and international businesspeople. This year’s event had the theme ‘Invest in the Lviv Region’. Conference-goers discussed topics like ‘Business Outsourcing as a Tool for the Dynamic Development of the Lviv Region Economy’, ‘Introduction of New Technologies – the Evolution of Industrial Production’, Industrial Parks as a Progressive Tool for Engaging Technology Companies’, and ‘Financial Instruments for Development – Global Practice and Prospects for Ukraine’ on the first day. The second day saw attendees dive into topics like agro-industrial development, export, tourism, international technical assistance, energy conservation, and renewable energy.

МІЖНАРОДНИЙ ЕКОНОМІЧНИЙ ФОРУМ ХІХ Міжнародний економічний форум "Інвестиції у Львівщину" проходив у нашому місті 31 жовтня – 1 листопада. Організований Львівською обласною державною адміністрацією, Міжнародний економічний форум є потужною національною та міжнародною платформою для компетентного обговорення важливих питань, пов'язаних з конкурентоспроможністю регіонів, їх стратегічного розвитку та економічного зростання. Основними завданнями форуму є представлення України як безпечної території для бізнесу, діалог між владою та бізнесом, активізація транскордонного співробітництва, залучення інвестицій, налагодження корисних ділових контактів між українськими та зарубіжними діловими колами. У перший день Форуму було представлено чотири блоки: "Аутсорсинг бізнес-процесів як інструмент динамічного розвитку економіки Львівщини", "Впровадження нових технологій. Еволюція промислового виробництва", "Індустріальні парки як прогресивний інструмент залучення технологічних компаній" та "Фінансові інструменти розвитку: глобальна практика і перспективи для України". В другий день Форуму до уваги учасників були тематичні заходи в галузі розвитку агропромислового сектора, експорту, туризму, міжнародної технічної допомоги, а також енергозбереження та відновлюваної енергії.

LVIV HOSTED AN INTERNATIONAL AAU FORUM ON CRIMINAL LAW AND PROCESS On October 18, in Lviv was held Criminal Law Forum. The event featured the most important aspects of criminal practice, property rights in criminal proceedings, the specifics of the investigation and trial of certain types of crimes. Also within Forum’s program took place discussions of such issues as protection of clients in conducting operational investigative actions, judicial reform, the consequences of the cancellation of "Lozovoy" amendments and restarting the law enforcement system. Among forum’s speakers came leading lawyers and experienced attorneys, judges of different instances, representatives of investigative and law enforcement institutions, academics and others.

У ЛЬВОВІ ВІДБУВСЯ МІЖНАРОДНИЙ ФОРУМ LVIV CRIMINAL LAW FORUM У п’ятницю, 18 жовтня у Львові відбувся міжнародний кримінальний форум Lviv Criminal Law Forum, у межах якого було розглянуто низку актуальних питань, зокрема: право власності в рамках кримінального провадження, специфіка розслідування та судового розгляду окремих видів злочинів. Також в рамках форуму була проведена дискусійна панель, під час якої учасники мали змогу поговорити про судову реформу, статус захисника, наслідки скасування "правок Лозового", перезапуск правоохоронної системи та багато іншого. Серед доповідачів форуму були провідні адвокати та досвідчені юристи, судді різних інстанцій, представники слідчих та правоохоронних органів, науковці.

US ASTRONAUT VISITS LVIV Heidi Stefanyshyn-Piper, аn astronaut from the United States, visited Lviv to mark world space week on 13 October. She has received numerous honours and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, and two Navy Achievement Medals. Stefanyshyn-Piper has flown on two space missions during which she completed five spacewalks totaling nearly 34 hours. As of 2019, only 38 humans have ever spent more time on spacewalks. Within visit which was organised by the American Embassy, the astronaut met with students and youth and made a speech at Lviv’s National Polytechnic University. She spoke about the work of the international crew on the International Space Station and her experiences there. She also met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. Heidi’s father was born in the small village of Yakymiv, near Lviv. She is proud of her Ukrainian heritage and has visited the area three times.

ВІЗИТ АМЕРИКАНСЬКОЇ АСТРОНАВТКИ ДО ЛЬВОВА Відома американська астронавтка Гайдемарі Стефанишин-Пайпер, відвідала Львів, де 13 жовтня взяла участь у відзначенні світового тижня космосу. Вона отримала численні відзнаки та нагороди, зокрема, медаль "За похвальну службу", дві "Похвальні медалі ВМС" та дві медалі "За видатні заслуги ВМС". Стефанишин-Пайпер працювала у двох космічних місіях, в яких вона виконала п'ять виходів у відкритий космос загальною тривалість майже 34 години. Станом на 2019 рік лише 38 осіб у світі мають більше досягнення. На зустрічі, організованій американським посольством у Львівському національному політехнічному університеті, вона розповіла про роботу міжнародного екіпажу на Міжнародній космічній станції та свій досвід роботи на орбіті. Вона також зустрілася з мером Львова Андрієм Садовим. До речі, батько Гайдемарі народився в селі Якимів поблизу Львова. Вона пишається своїм українським корінням і вже тричі відвідувала батьківщину.

"AIDA'S" INCREDIBLE RETURN Last month Luxor witnessed the return of Verdi’s Opera Aida after 22 years of absence, an event greatly awaited by opera enthusiasts from around the world, at the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor. The performance was directed by Michael Sturm, from Germany, while as art director came Ukraine’s Andriy Maslyakov. The Academic Symphony Orchestra “INSO-Lviv” under guidance of conductor Oksana Lyniv was providing the musical part, while the National Choir of Ukraine DUMKA was the choir. The main roles were played by Korean soprano Sae-Kyung Rim as Aida; Belgian tenor Mickeal Spadaccini as Radames, Greek baritone Aris Argiris as Amonasro and Czech mezzo-soprano Eliska Weissova as Amneris. The organizing committee has carried out many promotional campaigns to market tickets in London, New York, Madrid, Milan, Berlin, Dubai, Shanghai, to attract opera lovers to the event. The performance was attended by a distinguished constellation of politicians, economists, tourism figures, artists, foreigners, ambassadors and some prominent Arab figures. The return of the Opera Aida to Luxor since its premiere at the same location at the end of 1997, is a message of peace and security from Egypt to all parts of the world, and a step towards making Opera Aida an annual event on the global tourism agenda.

Минулого місяця в місті Луксор (Єгипет) відбулась непересічна культурна подія – прем’єра міжнародної постановки опери Дж. Верді “Аїда” у стародавньому храмі цариці Хатшепсут. “Аїда” повертається знову через 22 роки, і цього разу режисером постановником був Міхаель Штурм з Німеччини,а арт-директором – Андрій Масляков з України. Вистава відбулась за участі Академічного симфонічного оркестру “INSO-Львів” під орудою відомої української диригентки Оксани Линів та Національної заслуженої академічної капели України “Думка”. Основні партії виконали Сае-Куїнг Рім (Корея), Мікаель Спадаччині (Бельгія), Еліска Веіссова (Чехія) та Аріс Аргіріс (Греція). Організаційний комітет здійснив багато рекламних кампаній з продажу квитків у Лондоні, Нью-Йорку, Мадриді, Мілані, Берліні, Дубаї, Шанхаї, щоб залучити любителів опери до події. Виставу відвідали багато політиків, економістів, діячів туризму, художників, іноземців, послів та деяких видатних арабських діячів. Повернення опери "Аїда" в Луксор після її прем'єри в кінці 1997 року є повідомленням про мир та безпеку в Єгипті і кроком до того, щоб зробити виконання “Аіди” щорічною подією.

CHEESE & WINE FESTIVAL’S JUBILEE One of Lviv’s most popular culinary celebrations – the Cheese & Wine Festival – held its jubilee event in the very heart of the ancient city last month. The event featured a large variety of wines and cheeses from many of Ukraine’s most-renowned manufacturers and talented local artisans. Leopolitans and guests of the city were able to learn about winemaking traditions at the new ‘Tastings & Lectures’ workshop led by Bohdan Pavlyuh, author of the ‘Wine is Easy’ blog, head of Lviv’s Ukrainian Association of Winemakers & Sommeliers, and winner of the Best Sommelier of Lithuania 2019 award. Several culinary workshops were

also held alongside an array of musical performances by local artists. As always, one of the festival’s most popular events was the Ukrainian Grape Stomp Championships, featuring the likes of fashion designer Olena Dats, artist Oleksandr Voytowvych, and DikArt creative marketing director Andriy Sydor. Other festival-inspired events included the Art & Wine Zone, featuring art projects made from wine corks and an exhibition of paintings painted with wine. Festivalgoers attending on the final day were treated with delightful cheesecake, specially prepared in the traditional Galician way by local chefs.

ЮВІЛЕЙНЕ СВЯТО СИРУ І ВИНА Одне з найпопулярніших у Львові кулінарних свят – сиру та вина – минулого місяця відбулось вже вдесяте. Основною подією заходу став ярмарок сирів та вин найвідоміших українських виробників і талановитих місцевих майстрів. Львів’яни та гості міста змогли дізнатись про традиції виноробства на новому проекті "Дегустації та лекції" Богдана Павлюха, автора блогу "Вино – це просто", голови львівського відділення Української асоціації виноробів та сомельє та переможця нагороди "Найкращий сомельє Литви 2019". Також відбулись декілька кулінарних майстер-класів а також музичних виступів

місцевих артистів. Як завжди, однією з найпопулярніших подій фестивалю став чемпіонат "Велика чавильня винограду", в якому виступили модельєр Олена Даць, художник Олександр Войтович та креативний директор з маркетингу фірми ДікАрт Андрій Сидор. Серед інших подій варто відзначити, зокрема, Art & Wine Zone, де виставлялись художні проекти, виготовлені з винних корків та виставку картин, написаних вином. Усіх гостей в заключний день свята пригощали чудовим сирником, який спеціально приготували традиційним галицьким способом місцеві кухарі.

Lviv Fashion Week (LFW) brought glamour back to the Western Ukrainian capital for the 24th time last month in an event dedicated to the ideas of sustainable fashion and ecologically-friendly outfits. Festivities kicked off with the wonderful Lviv Orchestra Fashion event featuring Marta Wachholz’s newest collection with music by Ukrainian composer Ivan Nebesnyy played by the lovely INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra. As always, LFW highlighted young and talented designers like Oppido, Ornament, Soyka, Havryliv Design, Starchak, Zalesova, and FRBTK through events like the LFW for Eco and Future Fashion Generation projects. The fantastic program also featured events like the Future of Textiles, an exhibition produced by the Swedish Institute and sustainable fashion experts, and the Diversity You project, which drew attention to the concept of diversity in beauty. For the first time, most events were held at Lviv’s hopping !FESTRepublic Club. New to the programme this year was Lviv Fashion Cinema, a project that combines fashion and cinema. Hosted at the Kopernyk Kinopalace, the event featured six films provided by Kyiv Music Film, including McQueen; Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist; Sex, Fashion & Disco; My Generation; and Celebration.

oon, New Year’s celebrations will be upon us, which is why many companies are already thinking about whether to reward their employees with a corporate holiday event or simply bonuses and gifts. Executives have come to understand that it is necessary to motivate and inspire employees, so they’ve started using internal PR tools like corporate events. I can go on and on about the organization of events, however there are moments and stages that are more important than others to successfully organize a corporate event.

Let’s start with the main topic – what is the purpose behind holding the event? Is it some kind of company tradition or are you planning something entirely new this year? Maybe your company is expanding and there is a necessity to introduce new employees to the company’s philosophy? Or maybe your company is marking some important achievements and you’d like to reward top employees? The next important point is to build a unique holiday concept. EXPERT OPINION When we present our idea, we talk up the appropriateness of the concept, its relevance to the company, and your corporate goals. We present at least 10 concept elements, which can include venue decoration, guest activities, a dress code, catering, entertainment, and many other surprises. Let’s talk about the budget of the event. As companies are usually constrained by company budgets, it can mean that some event items are simplified, or even not brought to life. A competent event manager, however, will always suggest the right elements – replacing a high-priced celebrity with a creative workshop, unique show, or employee gifts – that work just as well and are equally as memorable. That said, I’m fundamentally opposed to conscious budget cutting and unjustified savings on things that are of great importance to the satisfaction of your holiday guests. Another important element is the selection of location. This is always a problem as it can be quite difficult to find the perfect location for each company. Organizers should take into account the number of guests, the seating format, the stage and dance floor, how to install conceptual elements, and any technical requirements of the location. Of great importance to me is the relevance of location to the chosen event theme, as well as the experience and customer service of the staff. It’s always good to ask several agencies to select locations and compare your choices. Food is especially important and an essential part of any corporate event. You could either order from the venue or have them deliver to your event location. When preparing a menu, it’s important to pay attention to the dishes and their total weight, assortment, serving, and schedule to make sure it fits in with the program schedule so that everything goes smoothly. It’s also important to decorate buffet tables, dishes, and drinks to match the event theme. You should also consider the staff dress code and, well, don’t forget about the Candy Bar! Immersion and emotions are the main trophies for an event organizer. Immersing a participant in a unique state with the help of VR or an interactive photo zone, original activities, and rewards for cleverness – this creates a sense of wonder and euphoria among guests that affects the mood of the whole team. This is how we strengthen the corporate culture of your company! If those are the ’do’s’ of event organizing, what are the ’don’ts’? The main thing is that you shouldn’t split a corporate event into several sub-projects – be sure to do everything yourself. Don’t get a friend with a good sound system or good camera come in to do part of the job. That’s how overlapping responsibilities and misunderstandings happen, which will no doubt affect the outcome of your event. Luckily, there are many professional agencies that do great things. They won’t waste their time working with questionable contractors or hire the services of unfamiliar people. Trust is the key to a successful event! У цьому випадку можливості агенції часто обмежені і чудовий задум доводиться “різати”, спрощувати ті чи інші речі, що безумовно впливає на творчу складову або наповнення події. Однак грамотний івентор завжди запропонує правильне співвідношення елементів, замінивши вартісну “зірку” на креативний майстер-клас, унікальне шоу чи подарунки працівникам, що у результаті спрацює

краще та запам’ятається надовше. З іншого боку я кардинально проти свідомого урізання бюджетів та необґрунтованої економії на речах, котрі мають велике значення для задоволення гостей Вашого свята. Дуже важливий елемент – підбір локації. З цим завжди проблема, оскільки дуже складно підібрати ідеальну локацію для кожної компанії. Тут враховується кількість гостей, формат розсадки, місце для сцени і танцполу, антураж, інтер’єр, можливості монтажу концептуальних елементів, а також, безумовно, технічні умови на локації. Для мене велике значення має відповідність локації обраній концепції свята, а також експертність і клієнтоорієнтованість персоналу. Завжди вимагайте від агенцій вибору локацій і порівняння умов по них. Харчування – особливо важливий і невід’ємний атрибут будь-якого корпоративу. Корпоративи відбуваються як на локаціях з власним кейтерингом, так і з можливістю замовити виїзне обслуговування. При підготовці меню важливо звертати увагу на вихід страв і загальну вагу, асортимент, подачу, формувати графік видач страв

Занурити відвідувача у змінений стан за допомогою віртуальної реальності, інтерактивної фотозони або ж ефекту присутності, задіяти у оригінальних активностях та нагородити за кмітливість – це створює відчуття ейфорії у гостя і впливає на настрій всього колективу. А це важливо для зміцнення корпоративної культури будь-якої компанії! Чого не варто робити на корпоративних святах? Головне на мою думку – це або Ви робите все самі, або віддаєте організацію «під ключ». Не можна розділяти організацію на частини і щось робити самому, бо у Вас є кум та сват, котрі мають колонки або фотозону. При такому підході на стику цієї відповідальності Вас неминуче чекає факап! А це без сумніву відобразиться на результаті події. Сьогодні на ринку існують чимало професійних агенцій, котрі роблять прекрасні події. Вони не хочуть витрачати свій час на експерименти з освоєння сумнівних підрядників чи послуг незрозумілого походження. Довіра – запорука успішного івенту! І останнє – обов’язково збирайте відгуки. Кожен відвідувач події залишився з емоціями та під враженням, котрим варто поділитись за-для ефективних висновків та успішної корпоративної роботи Вашої компанії у майбутньому! nyone engaged in Turkish-Ukrainian business relations will likely have encountered Burak Pehlivan. As Chairman of the Turkish-Ukrainian Business Association TUID, forty-one-year-old Pehlivan is a well-known and high profile member of Ukraine’s international business community who has been tireless in his efforts to help build business bridges across the Black Sea. Under his stewardship, TUID has emerged as one of Ukraine’s largest and most active international business associations, winning numerous international awards and expanding in line with the impressive growth of the Turkish business community in Ukraine. He sees clear parallels between Ukraine’s current situation and Turkey’s own economic evolution over the past few decades, and believes the untapped potential that first attracted him to Ukraine continues to offer exciting opportunities for the Turkish business presence in the country to develop further. Pehlivan’s initial introduction to Ukraine came during the mid-2000s and was part of a wave of expansion as a new generation of Turkish businesses looked to enter Central European and former Soviet markets. When he decided to establish his own business towards the end of the decade, Ukraine seemed a logical choice. After relocating to Kyiv in 2009, Pehlivan has spent the past ten years in the Ukrainian capital. His involvement in the wider world of Turkish-Ukrainian business relations originally stemmed from his enthusiasm for Ukraine, which led to him becoming a prolific and groundbreaking blogger about the country. “All in all, I wrote over 1,500 blogs for the Turkish media about different aspects of life in Ukraine,” he recalls. “In many cases, I was the first person ever to write about these subjects in Turkish.” The recognition this brought eventually resulted in an invitation to become involved with TUID, paving the way for his election as Vice Chairman of the organization in 2011. Pehlivan says he no longer has enough free time to keep up his blogging career, but he maintains a strong social media presence with thousands of followers on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. These platforms have allowed him to consolidate his position as one of the public faces of strengthening Turkish-Ukrainian economic ties. LVIV TODAY | November 2019

The Turkish business community in Ukraine has experienced considerable growth since 2014, with numerous new investments coming at a time when many Western businesses have continued to adopt a “wait and see” approach towards the changes taking place in post-Maidan Ukraine. Pehlivan believes there are a number of factors that have helped Turkish businesses to feel at home in Ukraine, not least the similarities with their own experiences. He points to the parallels between today’s Ukraine and Turkey during the transitional years of the 1990s and early 2000s, when the country faced challenges that would be all-too-familiar to Ukrainian audiences, including perceptions of widespread corruption, rule of law issues, and a lack of international business experience.

The signing of a customs union with the EU in the mid-1990s proved to be a pivotal moment in modern Turkey’s emergence as an economic success story, but Pehlivan stresses that many in the Turkish business community were initially skeptical over the move, fearing that they would not be competitive enough. The changes that this EU customs union helped facilitate meant that when Ukraine reached its own watershed moment in 2014, Turkish businesses were in a position to take advantage of the new opportunities presenting themselves, while also being relatively unaffected by the transitional turbulence that put so many others off. “Turkish companies were ready in 2014 and had the appetite to enter Ukraine. Over the previous fifteen years, they had become competitive internationally and gained valuable experience. Ukraine was a good fit at the right time.”

Pehlivan estimates that Turkish investments in Ukraine since 2014 total around USD 1 billion, while annual trade between the two countries topped USD 4 billion in 2018. He talks of a “golden age” in Turkish-Ukrainian business relations, and speaks of the growing Turkish presence in diverse sectors of the Ukrainian economy ranging from renewable energy to retail. As economic ties strengthen, there are other signs of a closer bilateral relationship. The two countries concluded a landmark agreement in 2017 whereby Turkish and Ukrainian citizens can visit each other’s countries using internal identification documents rather than international passports. One and a half million Ukrainians visited Turkey in 2018, while around 300,000 Turks came to Ukraine. “I can recall a time before daily flights. Now there are more than 200 flights between Ukraine and Turkey every single week,” Pehlivan observes. With Ukrainians and Turks increasingly in contact with each other, perceptions about Ukraine are evolving. “Five or six years ago, I would still encounter people within the Turkish business community who thought Ukraine was essentially like Russia. Now there is growing recognition of how different the two countries are, and of the dramatic changes that are taking place in today’s Ukraine. Personal experience plays a big role in this process. When people come to Kyiv, for example, they quickly appreciate that Ukraine is part of Europe, not only geographically but also culturally and socially.” The biggest issue of the bilateral agenda remains a free trade agreement. This potential TurkeyUkraine FTA has been years in the making and is tantalizingly close to conclusion, with politicians from both countries repeatedly stating that it will be signed in the near future. The last remaining sticking points revolve around certain strategic areas and specific industries, but Pehlivan is eager to focus on the bigger picture of what the FTA could mean for trade volumes as a whole. He argues that a free trade deal with Ukraine could have a similarly positive effect on the Turkish economy as the 1990s customs union with the EU, albeit on a smaller scale. The results will be beneficial for both countries, he stresses. “We need free trade in order to boost overall trade. We do not want to eat all the cake. We want to make the cake bigger.”

The participants took a field tour around the enclosures with bears and learned the history of each resident, enjoyed a special time in the open air and a warm autumn day in a friendly atmosphere. EBA SPECIAL EBA WOMENS CLUB: MEE TING WITH KHRYST YNA PELENO

In October, we held a warm meeting for the Association's Western Ukrainian Women's Club with a nutritionist – Khrystyna Peleno, at a hospital spot Smakolyk restaurant. The meeting was very informative, and we would like to share the tips received, as we support the saying: in a healthy body – a healthy spirit! So, here are five basic rules for healthy eating from Khrystyna Peleno: 1) The quality of the food. “We care about the quality of our clothes and work, but very often we forget to check the quality of the food we consume throughout the day. The main question we need to ask ourselves is: Does the food contain nutrients? Because exactly the nutrients from the product will feed our cells” emphasized Khrystyna. 2) Amount of food. The main rule is not to overeat, because our norm is up to 400 grams of food per meal. Khrystyna advised not to combine two things at the same time, for example, reading

or watching videos and eating. You should also set 15 minutes for a meal, and if you think you want an additional portion of food, recall the "seven minutes rule" – set a timer for 7 minutes and ask yourself again whether you really want an extra portion. Khrystyna also encouraged to avoid emotional eating. 3) Eating time – Biorhythms work with the sun: in the morning our body is more active, than after the sunset, when it slows down and wants to sleep. The rule of the equator is 5:00 pm – after 5:00 pm you should follow the rules of a healthy dinner, which is a vegetable dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime – no later than 9:00 pm, and leave the heaviest food for lunchtime. 4) Frequency – remember about the breaks between meals (one pause equals to 3 hours). 5) The last rule is the regularity you adhere to the previous four rules. Maintaining a balanced diet is very important, and water is an integral part of this diet. So

how to determine "your" amount of water per day? The formula is quite simple: we multiply our weight by 0.033 = the amount of water you need to drink during the day. Also, there are two main “pests” for our health worth mentioning – sugar, which is in most foods, and artificial fats or so-called trans-fats. EBA EVENT UNLIMIT UKRAINE SME HUB IN LVIV Leading business coach – Olena Tkachuk, CEO at Citrine DMA and founder of the first Instaschool Ukraine, presented core information about the modern digital marketing in the sales system. At the SME Hub event held in Lviv on October 3, Unlimit Ukraine by EBA participants learned how to develop a marketing strategy and talked about the role of digital marketing in a strategy, discovered which digital marketing tools are effective for business, and how to get SMM to work for business, and not the other way around. Also, Olena Tkachuk shared some lifehacks on how to make potential customers real through digital communications and, of course, mentioned about the KPI digital marketing metrics. Recent update on the matter of corporate legislation On 3rd of October, 2019 Ukrainian Parliament has adopted the Law On Amendment to Some Legislative Acts of Ukraine on Protection of Ownership (No. 159-IX), also known as Anti-Raiding Law, effective starting from 2nd of November 2019. The Law is aimed to prevent hostile takeovers of the immovable property and corporate rights. At the same time, the scope of regulation in regards to Limited Liability Companies and Joint Stock Companies is limited, and, therefore, it is definitely not the final remedy – but rather an interim step towards the ownership protection. Hereby we provide a short overview of the main novelties introduced by the named Law.

Stage registration: • access to the state registers will be limited to the state registration agencies and notaries; • penalties for violation of state registration procedures are increased; Registration of the immovable property rights: • Place of registration – at the location of real estate; • conducted simultaneously with the execution of the notarized deed (unless the contract provides a condition precedent); • additional verification of the documentary evidence for the ownership rights acquired prior 2013; • verification of other registers for encumbrances and limitations; • additional verification of the applicants’ powers; • new rules for the registration of the title for unfinished construction. Main changes applicable to LLC: • NEW! Obligatory use of special Notarial Document Forms for: certification of correct translation from one language to another; application for entry into LLC; application for withdrawal from LLC; certificate of transfer of real estate to and from the authorized capital of legal entities; deed of shares transfer; distribution balance; any General Meeting’ s/ Supervisory Board’s decisions that are submitted for the state registration of changes in the State register, etc. • NEW! Significant deeds. Now, the applicability of legislative requirement for the prior shareholders’ approval of the significant transactions (exceeding 50% of the company’s net assets) might be waived if so is provided by the charter. This restriction significantly affected companies with low or negative net assets, as basically all transactions were subject to obligatory shareholders’ approval. • NEW! Notarized POA for registration actions. If the documents to the state registration on the changes of company’s information in the Register are submitted by representative of the company, other than director, the powers of such representative shall be confirmed by notarized PoA. Thus, if director refuses to sign application or to issue PoA – the company will not be able to change information in the state register. This legal gap might affect the companies on case of director’s dismissal, or if director dies, disappears or is disable otherwise. Lessons learned or what shall be done by the management and owners of Ukrainian business? • To review the Charter and amend if necessary in part of the management powers limitations; • To issue notarized PoA from the company authorizing other entrusted person to conduct registration actions, to add extend the list of signatories in the state register. 2011–2018

Winter Olympic Games 2030: Lviv Plans to Bid for 2030 Winter Olympics Lviv will bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games and 2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games and will begin the process next year, said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy and President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Serhiy Bubka, who visited the Western Ukrainian capital on 24 October. Lviv previously tried for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, but was forced to withdraw amid the political turmoil following the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. “It is not an easy task, but we have enough time to plan everything and build the necessary infrastructure”, said Bubka, considered the finest pole vaulter of all-time, “Those who do not dream, do not win – so let’s work and move in this direction.”

Lviv’s 2022 bid featured ice sport events in the city and skiing events in the Carpathian Mountain communities of Tysovets, Slavske, and Volovets. The 2030 bid should be similar, although Bukovel also hopes to land the skiing events. While the Opening and Closing Ceremonies could be held at Arena Lviv, a new multipurpose arena would have to be built in the city to host events like hockey and figure skating. With the 2028 Summer Olympics slated for Los Angeles, USA, potential rival bids could come from previous hosts like Salt Lake City, USA and Calgary, Canada. The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China while Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy will host the 2026 Games.

Робота над нею почнеться у 2020 році. Про це заявив мер Львова Андрій Садовий під час зустрічі з президентом Національного олімпійського комітету України Сергієм Бубкою, який прибув до Львова 24 жовтня. Бубка зі свого боку сказав, що Львів цілком має шанси виграти проведення Олімпійських Ігор, адже раніше місто подавало заявку на проведення Олімпіади 2022 року, але пізніше було змушено відмовитися від боротьби через важкі політичні й економічні обставини в країні. "Хто не мріє, той не перемагає. Тому давайте працювати і рухатися в цьому напрямку", – заявив президент НОК. Заявка на 2022 р. передбачала

проведення змагань з льодового спорту у місті, а лижні перегони на прикарпатських гірських базах Тисовець, Славське та Воловець. Заявка на 2030 рік повинна бути аналогічною, хоча Буковель також готовий прийняти проведення змагань з гірських лиж. Церемонії відкриття та закриття могли б проходити на "Арені Львів", але у місті все одно потрібно було б побудувати нову багатоцільову арену для проведення таких заходів, як хокей та фігурне катання. Якщо літні Олімпійські ігри 2028 року заплановані в Лос-Анджелесі, США, заявки на зимові можуть надійти від попередніх господарів, таких як Солт-Лейк-Сіті, США та Калгарі, Канада. Зимові Олімпійські ігри 2022 року пройдуть у Пекіні, Китай, а Мілан та Кортина д'Ампецо, Італія, прийматимуть Ігри 2026 року.

Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Olena Starikova Leopolitan cyclist Olena Starikova was named Lviv’s October Athlete of the Month after she captured two medals at last month’s UEC European Track Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. The 2020 Olympic medal-hopeful captured silver in the women’s sprint competition and bronze in the women’s 500m time trial at the top-level event. It’s been quite a year for Starikova – she also captured silver in the 500m time trial at the World Championships in Poland and the European Games in Belarus. Congratulations Olena!

Running: Leopolitan Sofia Yaremchuk wins at Corsa dei Santi Leopolitan long-distance runner Sofia Yaremchuk took top prize at the Corsa dei Santi 10km IAAF Bronze Label road race on 1 November in Via della Conciliazione in Rome, near St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City. Setting a personal best with a time of 33:01, she beat Kenya’s Ivyne Lagat and defending champion Clementine Mukandanga by over 15 seconds. “The course is fascinating, but it’s also very difficult”, said Yaremchuk, who currently lives in Rome. “I am very happy as I set a personal best in a tough race and beat strong athletes.”
