t’s the time of the year when we reflect on all that was last year and all that could be in the year ahead; and for Lviv – the future looks bright! No matter whether it’s in sports, culture, the arts, business, or politics, Leopolitans are set to shine in 2019 and reflect all the wonderful things this city has to offer to the world at large. In my annual ‘Crystal Ball’ editorial, let’s take a look at some of the Leopolitans looking to take the world by storm this year. LEOPOLITANS SE T TO SHINE IN BUSINESS

With all the doom-and-gloom stories about the Ukrainian ‘brain drain’ of talented, young professionals moving abroad, another often-overlooked element to the story is the emergence of Ukraine as an IT giant. No longer the sole domain of countries like Estonia and Hungary, Ukrainian cities are now competing for some of the world’s top IT companies – and Lviv is at the forefront. Just look at Lviv’s already-under-construction IT Park. This $150 million USD, 10-hectare park will boast the infrastructure to host dozens of the world’s top companies. Six office buildings, two business centres, a shopping centre and kindergarten – even a university (!) – and living accommodations to boot, the park has already attracted companies like SoftServe, GlobalLogic, and Perfectial. With additional flights in 2019 from airlines like Ryanair, Wizz Air, and airBaltic, expect to see more internationally-renowned IT companies set-up shop in the Western Ukrainian capital in 2019. This year Ukraine will hold its first regularly-scheduled national elections since the EuroMaidan, with the Presidential election set for this spring and the Parliamentary elections set for autumn – and two

of Lviv’s most prominent personalities could play a very big role. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy surprised many observers when his fledgling Samopomich political party – less than two years old at the time – stormed to third place in the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary elections, taking 11% of the national vote. While its numbers are down from those right now, Sadovyy is known to be a crafty campaigner and could turn things around before the parliamentary elections. Svyatoslav Vakarchuk – the frontman of iconic Ukrainian music group Okean Elzy – has also frequently been named as a potential presidential candidate. While he’s been noncommittal on the subject, celebrated actor and fellow celebrity Volodomyr Zelensky announced he’s running and is currently in third place in opinion polls. Maybe that’s enough to convince one of Lviv’s most beloved citizens to announce? LEOPOLITANS SE T TO SHINE IN SPORTS

With just a year before the best summer athletes in the world gather in Tokyo, Japan for the 2020 Olympics, 2019 will see our sports stars try to book their spots in the world’s biggest sporting event. Some already have. Like Lviv’s ace shooter Pavlo Korostylov. He became the first Ukrainian to qualify for Tokyo after winning his first world championship title (25m standard pistol). This year should see many of Lviv’s top athletes book their own tickets, with many events – including this summer’s European Games in Minsk, Belarus – offering qualifying opportunities. Keep your eyes on wrestlers Alla Cherkasova (2018 world champion) and Oksana Chudyk (2018 Youth Olympics silver), gymnast Khrystyna Pohrachyna (2018 Youth Olympics

Lviv’s chess prodigy sisters of Mariya and Anna Muzychuk will also try to win the Women’s World Chess Championship in May, which Mariya previously held in 2015-16). ЗИМОВА ВИСТАВКА СОБАК 26–27 січня. Виставковий центр "Південний-Експо" (вул. Ширецька, 36) Собаки, мабуть, були першими з тварин, яких приручила людина. Відтоді собака вірно служить як пастух, сторож, рятівник, поводир і просто товариш та компаньйон. Завдяки своєму надзвичайно гострому нюху собаки просто незамінні на полюванні та в пошуку вибухівки чи наркотиків, вони допомагають шукати людей, які потрапили під завали; вони допомагають незрячим пересуватись містом та багато іншого. В останні вихідні січня, а саме 26–27 числа, львівські любителі собак та гості міста зможуть відвідати сертифікатну виставку собак FCI-CACIB, у виставковому центрі "Південний Експо". Породи, які візьмуть участь у виставці: американський акіта, акіта, велш коргі пемброк, джек расел тер’єр, йоркширський тер’єр, лабрадор ретривер, середньоазіатська вівчарка, сибірський хаскі, французький бульдог, чихуахуа. Міжнародне професійне журі буде оцінювати собак за їх ростом, поставою та будовою і видавати дипломи. ьогодні Львівський кіноцентр Lviv Film Center, це освітній центр та кінотеатр незалежного, авторського, "іншого" кіно. Діяльність кіноцентру орієнтована на глядачів, котрі люблять і цінують якісне кіно на великому екрані – незалежно від їхнього віку, рівня доходів та соціального статусу. Тут львів’янам показують здебільшого немасове кіно, і, як наголошує керівництво кіноцентру, у такий спосіб глядачам прищеплюють любов до якісного кінематографу. Львівський кіноцентр Lviv Film Center (колишній кінотеатр "Сокіл") якому нині вже 40 років, розташований посеред парку "Горіховий гай" в південній частині Франківського району м. Львова. Споруда була зведена ще у 1978 році, тоді це був дитячий кінотеатр "Орлёнок". Поруч розташовані два ставки, невдовзі тут розпланували і розбили парк "Горіховий гай". Під час реорганізації державного кінотеатру "Сокіл" у ЛКП "Львівський кіноцентр" ззовні та всередині

приміщення з 2015 по 2017 рр. тривав ремонт, на який з міського бюджету було виділено 3 млн 700 тис гривень. Задля комфорту відвідувачів протягом 2017−2018 відбулася повна реконструкція залу кінотеатру з заміною крісел та встановлення нового екрану, тож зараз у Lviv Film Center є два кінозали. Перший – у приміщенні і розрахований на 176 місць. Другий – унікальний кінозал на даху, що може вмістити до 70 осіб. Погода, звісно, може зіпсувати плани, але команда кіноцентру знайшла вихід – купили шатер. На даху проводяться і майстер-класи, і Дні народження і виїзні церемонії весілля, часом влаштовують і плівкові покази, адже кіноцентр має чималу добірку фільмів з архівів Львівської обласної контори кінопрокату, яка є у доброму робочому стані. Більшість показів, це фільми українською мовою, періодично відбуваються покази кінострічок мовою оригіналу з українськими субтитрами.

Як саме життя привело Вас до роботи, якою Ви зараз займаєтеся? Сьогодні можу сказати, що пропозиція очолити керівництво кінотеатром стала для мене справжнім дарунком долі, своєрідним викликом і новим захопленням водночас. Було складно зрозуміти яким має бути сучасний кіноцентр, які стрічки мають транслюватись на великий екран. Проте нам це вдалося — сьогодні Lviv Film Center став пріоритетною локацію для справжніх поціновувачів свідомого кіно, в якому я не лише директор артхаусного кінотеатру, а також постійний глядач!

Які завдання постали перед Вами як директором кінотеатру? Найбільша проблема нашого кінотеатру — це впізнаваність. Не дивлячись на те, що кінотеатр в Горіховому гаю існує вже добрих 40 років, чомусь пересічні львів'яни вважають, що ця кінолокація або ж зовсім не функціонує, або ж і надалі має назву “Сокіл”. Тому найскладнішою справою для нашої команди став правильний ребрендинг та популяризація нової назви і (головне) контексту Lviv Film Center. На жаль, довгий час наш вже оновлений кіноцентр не мав будь-якої зовнішньої позначки... Просто був собі білий фасад і мрії про те, якою ж має бути ідеальна вивіска. У жовтні 2018 року ми нарешті відважились і, оминаючи всі правила рекламної привабливості сучасних вивісок, просто взяли декілька банок чорної фарби і нанесли назву на стіну кінотеатру. До речі, виглядає досить стильно і видно здалеку :) Це, звісно, лишень один крок, проте він набув своєрідного символізму!

З весни 2019 року в підвальних приміщеннях LFC відкриється арт зал на 35 глядачів. Під час реконструкції апаратну залишили автентичною – як експонат, оновили лише звукове та відео обладнання, також у 2018 році було проведено тендер на закупівлю нового сучасного лазерного DCP-проектора. При Львівському кіноцентрі діють студія театру та кіно, шаховий гурток, гурток сучасного танцю, гурток рукопашного бою з елементами самозахисту, фітнес, школа-студія комплексного розвитку дітей (віком 5−6 років), 5 кіноклубів. У березні 2018 року почав функціонувати Відділ інновацій, команда якого старанно працює над створенням культурно-освітнього простору винахідливих ідей STEAM space (вул. Наукова, 49), офіційне відкриття якого планується на весну 2019 активно взаємодіє з найменшою аудиторією кіноцентру у форматі інтерактивних воркшопів зі STEAM-освіти.

Розкажіть про команду, яка працює разом з Вами у Lviv Film Center. У Lviv Film Center ми не маємо команди. У Lviv Film Center ми маємо дружню родину :) Всі працівники люблять свою справу і підтримують філософію нашого кіноосередку. Колектив досить нетиповий, всі мають різний життєвий та професійний досвід, проте кожен готовий до якісної та продуктивної взаємодії. Ми мріємо, плануємо та творимо разом! Ніхто не лишається осторонь: як і в будь якій порядній родині — всі рішення приймаються спільно. Завдяки такій згуртованості ми щороку покращуємо сервіс своїх послуг, поступово ревіталізуємо саму будівлю кінотеатру, виводимо на ринок все нові та нові пропозиції для наших відвідувачів. Ростемо і розвиваємося, в першу чергу, самі!

У 2018 році встановили систему опалення у всьому кінотеатрі (підвал, 1-ий поверх, 2-ий поверх) із залученням інноваційних систем (інфрачервоні саморегуляційні термоплівки, теплообмінники типу фанкойл). Також кінотеатр став повністю відкритим для людей з обмеженими руховими можливостями (обладнано відповідним устаткуванням туалети, пандуси, та встановлені дзвоники виклику). Також завершено роботи зі встановлення охоронної та пожежної сигналізацій, системи спостереження по всьому кінотеатрі. Варто зазначити що ЛМР прийняла ухвалу про реорганізацію ДКП "Кінотеатр "Сокіл" наприкінці 2014 року, а на початку 2015 року був оголошений конкурс на посаду директора кінотеатру. За його результатами на посаду очільника ЛКП "Львівський кіноцентр" було призначено Андрія Породко, якій й розповів журналу Lviv Today чим живе нині Lviv Film Center, і як кіноцентр планують далі розвивати у 2019 році.

Як формується репертуар кінопоказів? Чи є можливість забронювати квитки? Розклад наших сеансів складається переважно з ТОПових новинок артхаусних, авторських, україномовних стрічок. У своїй більшості це фільмипереможці світових кіноконкурсів та кінопродукти українських режисерів. Проте попит мають так званні “ретро-покази” — легендарні фільми, котрі свого часу формували смаки цілих поколінь. Однак, найбільш вибагливий глядач Lviv Film Center — це діти, для яких ми старанно обираємо сучасний мультиплікаційний контент. Є люди, які відповідають за постійне оновлення інформації в соціальних мережах та на зовнішній афіші кінотеатру. COVER STORY певного кінопродукту на нашому екрані. Сподіваємось, що наявність нового DCP-проектора покращить ситуацію з налагодженням більш плідної співпраці з офіційними кінодистриб'юторами. Тому з січня 2019 року в нашому розкладі будуть з'являтись і кіноновинки.

Що таке, на Вашу думку, "хороший кінотеатр" для сучасного глядача? На нашу думку "хороший кінотеатр" — це кінотеатр, де ЖИВЕ КІНО :) Тобто кіноосередок, де на екрані показують свідоме, якісне та україномовне і роблять це з любов'ю! На думку сучасного глядача "хороший кінотеатр" — це кінотеатр, як то кажуть "зі спецефектами": помпезним ремонтом і всілякими атракціями. Філософія Lviv Film Center дещо інша. Наш кіноцентр слугує місцем для "спокійного перегляду", переосмислення побаченого на екрані. Бо справжнє кіно не має підпорядковуватись брендам сучасної івент-індустрії, воно саме має бути брендом — культурним текстом з глибоким сенсом і високою естетикою!

З новітніх технологій кінопроекції, що останнім часом з’являються в наших кінотеатрах, за якою, на Вашу думку, майбутнє? Нові технології надають безліч переваг для сенсорного відчуття реальності. Глядач, за допомогою різноманітних допоміжних окулярів і рухомих пристроїв, повноцінно має змогу відчути себе

в середині стрічки. Проте, на мою думку, майбутнє за VR-форматом, в якому глядач матиме змогу віртуально доторкнутись до улюблених персонажів та відчути кіносвіт з ракурсу 360, однак чи буде такий формат перегляду кінематографічним?!

Як, на Вашу думку, змінилася кіноаудиторія за останні роки? Особисто мене тішить стрімкий розвиток сучасного УКРАЇНСЬКОГО кіно. За останні роки на екран вийшла велика кількість дійсно перевершеного національного кінопродукту. Ці стрічки не лише класно дивляться у всіх форматах, а ще і єднають нас в ментальному контексті. Те, що я спостерігаю щодня у Lviv Film Center — українська кіноаудиторія за останні роки стала більш "дорослішою", вибагливішою і переважно тяжіє власне до "нашого кіно"... Це не говорить про те, що світові блокбастери не актуальні, це говорить про те, що українці почали розуміти цінність вільної кінематографічної думки. Тому сучасне незалежне українське кіно в пріоритеті та мотивує :)

Ви вважаєте комерційно вигідним українське кіно? Так! Звісно у всьому має бути своєчасність і переважно все у цьому світі залежить від прихильності Фортуни, однак якщо рекламний процес правильно побудувати ще з перших відзнятих кадрів, то будь-який кінопродукт буде "на часі" і комерційно привабливим ;)

УКРАЇНСЬКА КІНОАУДИТОРІЯ ЗА ОСТАННІ РОКИ СТАЛА БІЛЬШ "ДОРОСЛІШОЮ", ВИБАГЛИВІШОЮ І ПЕРЕВАЖНО ТЯЖІЄ ВЛАСНЕ ДО "НАШОГО КІНО"... ЦЕ ГОВОРИТЬ ПРО ТЕ, ЩО УКРАЇНЦІ ПОЧАЛИ РОЗУМІТИ ЦІННІСТЬ ВІЛЬНОЇ К І Н Е М АТО Г РА Ф ІЧ Н О Ї Д У М К И . ТО М У С У Ч А С Н Е НЕЗАЛЕЖНЕ УКРАЇНСЬКЕ КІНО В ПРІОРИТЕТІ ТА МОТИВУЄ :) На який з українських фільмів, що вийдуть в прокат у 2019 році, Ви чекаєте найбільше? Дуже складно назвати щось одне. Це і історична драма "Захар Беркут", і фільм-мюзкл "Гуцулка Ксеня", і біографічна драма "Стус". Хоча особисто я не можу вже дочекатись на повнометражний мультфільм "Мавка. Лісова пісня", щоб переглянути його зі своїми дітьми.

Якими цікавими ідеями плануєте залучати відвідувачів у 2019 році? Вже давно хочемо бачити в нашому кінозалі більшу кількість підлітків. Тому на 2019 рік разом з нашим відділом інновацій плануємо запустити серію освітніх сеансів документального кіно для підлітків, а також започаткувати гарну традицію практичних воркшопів з кіномеханіки, а можливо навіть і школу кіно. Гадаємо вже з березня можна буде оцінити наслідки наших маленьких задумів :)

Яким повинен бути Львів, щоб місто з гордістю можна було називати таким, в якому хочеться жити? Львів завжди був містом мрій, можливостей та мотивацій. На мою думку саме львівська громада створила міф про найкраще місто на Землі, а потім вдало втілила його в життя :) Тому сьогодні львів'яни є вже тими щасливцями, які з гордістю можуть констатувати, що Львів є саме тим містом, в якому хочеться жити, творити, працювати і виховувати дітей!

LVIV FILM CENTER WATCH UKR AINIAN – CREATE YOUR FUTURE!

The Lviv Film Center completed its transformation from the Sokil Cinema after a three-year, 1.3 million USD renovation finished in 2017. While audio and video equipment were also upgraded, the operating room was mostly left untouched during the renovation in order to serve as an exhibit. The location also added a new laser DCP projector. The entire main hall has been transformed and new seats and an additional screen have been added. The entire building has been equipped with a modern heating system and is now completely accessible for those with disabilities. of the picturesque Horikhovyi Hai park in Lviv for nearly 40 years. Built near two ponds in 1978, it started out as the Orlenok children’s theatre. Today, the Lviv Film Center is a theatre and educational centre that focuses on original and independent films. The film centre caters to those that love quality, big screen movies and are looking for top-level cinematography outside the large-scale movies found in other theatres. The complex now features two screens, a standard 176-seat room and a unique rooftop screening area that can accommodate up to 70 viewers. In spring 2019 in cellar premises of the center will start

functioning Art Hall which will be able to accommodate 35 viewers. To combat inclement weather, the rooftop area is covered by a pavilion, making it ideal for workshops, birthdays, wedding ceremonies, corporate events, and other celebrations. To be sure, frequent screenings from the Lviv Regional Film Distribution Service are also screened in the unique location. Films are shown in Ukrainian as well as in their original languages with Ukrainian subtitles. The centre now hosts a film and theatre studio, chess club, dance and fitness groups, martial arts classes, special education school for children aged 5–6, and five different movie clubs.

In March 2018 was launched Innovations Department, team of which works hard over creation of cultural and educational area of creative ideas – STEAM space (located at 49, Naukova str.). Employees of this department are well known for their excellent work with kids via series of STEAM’s educational and interactive workshops. Official opening of this department will take place in spring of 2019. Lviv’s Andriy Porodko was appointed as the Lviv Film Center’s Director and he found time in his hectic schedule to tell Lviv Today readers about what’s in store for the Lviv Film Center in 2019.

COVER STORY How did you end up in your job? Becoming the Director of the Lviv Film Center is a blessing, even as it represents a new challenge and new devotion at the same time. It was rather difficult to understand what a modern film theatre should look like and what types of films should be presented on the big screen. But we’ve figured it out and now the Lviv Film Center is the No. 1 location for top independent movies in the city. I’m not just the director of this art-house movie theatre, I’m also a devoted viewer!

Is the routine of running a movie theatre different than what you expected? One of our biggest challenges was that despite residing in Horikhovyi Hai Park for nearly 40 years, the theatre is still relatively unknown. Many Leopolitans don’t know that we’ve reopened or rebranded from the ‘Sokil’ name they are more familiar with. So, one of the first key issues for our team was the promotion of the new Lviv Film Center rebranding. In this respect, in October, we painted the name of the centre in black paint on the external, white walls of the facility. It’s actually quite stylish and you can see it from a good distance. This is, of course, only a first step, but it’s also quite symbolic.

What makes the Lviv Film Center different from other theatres? The Lviv Film Center is Lviv’s only arthouse cinema dedicated to popularising cinema as an art form. As a socially-responsible project, our prime purpose is to greatly develop the young generation of our country. That’s why we have positioned ourselves as a centre of culture and education that uses film screenings and other artistic performances to develop a system of creative and inclusive recreation for children. Simply stated, we care about the future and understand that national integrity should be developed regardless of social status or age.

Tell us more about the team that works with you at the Lviv Film Center. Well, at the Lviv Film Center there is no team – we have one big, happy family. All employees love their jobs and follow the philosophy of our film community. Employees have various life and professional experiences, but each provides high quality and unique contributions. We dream, plan, and create together! Thanks to this unity we continue to improve our services, revitalise the facility, and introduce new options to our growing market. On top of that, we continually to grow professionally!

How do you put together your screening program? Is it possible to book tickets in advance? Our program is primarily comprised of Ukraine’s top arthouse and independent movies. The majority have won awards at international festivals and are

produced by Ukrainian art directors. We also highlight ‘retro screenings’ – legendary movies that have greatly affected the tastes of entire generations. Some of our most popular viewers are children, so we also choose the best modern animated films. We compile the repertoire ourselves but, unfortunately, are not always able to acquire licensing to screen some films. We hope that we will be able to attract more screenings from top film distribution companies with the addition of our new DCP projector. Starting from January 2019, our program will feature some of the latest film releases. We have employees responsible to keep our social media pages and posters constantly updated, so just be sure to check out what’s coming soon.

How would you describe a ‘good movie theatre’ for modern viewers? To my mind, a ‘good movie theatre’ is one that shows “live movies”; it’s a place that presents high-quality, Ukrainian films and does it with great love and understanding. As far as modern viewers are concerned, a ‘good movie theatre’ is one that offers various entertainments inside a beautiful facility. The philosophy of the Lviv Film Center is different. Our venue is the first choice for ‘easy viewing’, a place to perceive and contemplate what is being shown on the screen. Truly important films should not follow the trends of the modern film industry – they should be brands in their own right that feature a deep, cultural subtext and high aesthetics.

Which new film projection technologies do you believe will be most popular in the future? New technologies provide viewers with numerous advantages when it comes to experiencing a sense of reality. With the help of 3D glasses and moveable seating, viewers can feel like they are part of the movie, like they are ‘inside’ the story. But I believe in the great potential of VR (virtual reality), which allows viewers to see the film universe from a 360-degree angle and to even touch their beloved movie characters! I’m just not sure how this format will be applied to cinema just yet.

How has the filmgoing audience changed over the last few years? I’ve been impressed by the quick development of the Ukrainian film industry. We’ve seen a good number of national film products on the big screen in the last few years. These films are not only well-presented in different formats, but they also unite us on some kind of mental level. Each day at the Lviv Film Center I notice that the Ukrainian filmgoing audience is becoming more “grown up” – more demanding and more interested in viewing Ukrainian films. That doesn’t mean that the world’s best blockbusters are any less popular, it just goes to show that Ukrainians are beginning to understand the value of a national cinema industry and that modern Ukrainian films are in demand.

UKRAINIAN FILMGOING AUDIENCE IS BECOMING MORE “GROWN UP” – MORE DEMANDING AND MORE INTERESTED IN VIEWING UKRAINIAN FILMS. UKRAINIANS ARE BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF A NATIONAL CINEMA INDUSTRY AND THAT MODERN UKRAINIAN FILMS ARE IN DEMAND. Do you consider Ukrainian cinema to be commercially profitable? For sure! Of course, everything comes in its own time and depends on luck, however if advertising is produced effectively, each film production will be “in time” and commercially viable.

Which Ukrainian movie that will be released in 2019 are you most excited about? It’s difficult to name just one! I’m looking forward to the historical drama ‘Zakhar Berkut’, the musical ‘Hutsulka Ksenia’, and the biopic ‘Stus’. And no doubt I am super excited to see the full-length animated film Mavka: Forest Song together with my kids.

What exciting ideas to you have to attract viewers in 2019? For a long time now, we’ve wanted to see more teenagers at our Film Center. That’s why in 2019 our innovation department will launch a series of educational screenings of documentaries for teenagers. We’re also starting a new tradition of creative workshops dedicated to the work of the motion picture operator and have even founded our own school of cinema. Hopefully, we’ll have already seen the results of our actions by March.

In what way Lviv should change, so that Leopolitans would name it proudly as city in which they love to live? Lviv was always city full of dreams, chances and motivation. To my mind, it was Lviv’s own community that created myth about “the best city in the world” and later brought it to life. That is why today Leopolitans already are those lucky ones, that can proudly say that Lviv truly is such unique city in which one wants to live, create, work and bring up children!

BEST TOURIST PROMOTION: LVIV TOURIST CARD Lviv has long been considered Ukraine’s most European city and now we’ve joined the ranks of Europe’s top tourist destinations with the introduction of the new Lviv City Card for tourists. This plastic loyalty card was launched on 27 September and offers visitors to the city benefits when eating, sleeping, sightseeing, shopping, and using public transport. The Lviv City Card helps visitors discover Lviv’s rich history, luxurious architecture, and fascinating people and culture and comes with a tour guide that lists the city’s most popular attractions and restaurants and provides valuable information for travelers, including a Lifecell SIM card. Visitors can purchase a one-day (250 UAH), two-day (350 UAH), or three-day (450 UAH) option – which is far cheaper than most European tourist centres. Organisers promise the introduction of new venues and special bonuses in 2019. You can find the cards at the Lviv Tourist Information Centre and at most major tourism sites in Lviv, including hotels, restaurants, railway stations, and the airport.

Lviv’s police force got a little more athletic this year when the city’s very first bike units set off on their maiden patrols on 21 May. wEquipped with bikes, uniforms, and other equipment by the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) Ukraine, the patrols are tasked with keeping order and security on Lviv’s streets and reaching out to Leopolitans and guests of the city. In total, 40 officers were trained by National Police trainers, who were themselves trained by EUAM and Canadian experts, making Lviv the 12th Ukrainian city with bike units. Community policing is an effective crime-reduction strategy that aims to strengthen links between the police and the community they serve.

Львівська поліція з 21 травня 2018 року їздить по місту також і на велосипедах. Патрулям, оснащеним велосипедами, уніформою та іншим обладнанням від Консультативної місії Європейського Союзу (EUAM) доручено берегти порядок і безпеку львів’ян та гостей міста на його вулицях. Сорок офіцерів були підготовлені тренерами Національної поліції, які самі пройшли навчання в EUAM та у канадських експертів, і тепер наше місто – одне з дванадцяти в Україні, яке має велосипедний підрозділ. Зв'язок з громадськістю є ефективною стратегією зниження рівня злочинності, яка спрямована на зміцнення зв'язків між поліцією та громадою, якій вони служать.

With more than 1.3 million Ukrainian-Canadians, Canada has long been one of Ukraine’s best friends. In fact, Canada was the first Western country to recognise Ukrainian independence. So, it’s no surprise to see the wide range of projects and initiatives Canada supports in Ukraine. The year started off with Canadian Governor General Julie Payette meeting President Poroshenko in Lviv in January. Payette was in town to support the 200 Canadian soldiers taking part in the Canadian Armed Forces’ UNIFIER operation at the NGU Training Centre in the Lviv region. Poroshenko heaped praise on Canada for its support of Ukraine, which includes travel bans and economic sanctions on several Russian individuals and companies. Lviv’s Rynok Square was overrun by maple leaf-clad Canadians on 1 July to celebrate Canada Day. Leopolitans and Canadians around the country feasted on delicious maple syrup-slathered pancakes served up by Canadian forces and Embassy staff. A street hockey tournament saw Ukraine’s Invictus Games team take on Canadians including Olympic hockey players Sami Jo Small and Billy Bridges. Canadian surgeons also made a splash in Lviv this year, where they delivered a series of lectures on difficult children’s cases. Led by neurosurgeon Dr. James Rutka, the lectures were telecast across Ukraine. Dr. Rutka operates out of Lviv City Children’s Hospital and is instrumental in bringing in much-needed new equipment to the city through the Temerty Foundation. Thanks Canada!

Як відомо, у Канаді проживає понад 1,3 мільйона українців, і ця країна вже давно є серед найкращих друзів України. Фактично Канада була першою західною країною, яка визнала незалежність України. Отже, не дивно бачити широкий спектр проектів та ініціатив, які Канада підтримує в Україні. Минулий рік розпочався із зустрічі генерал-губернатора Канади Джулі Пайєт з президентом Петром Порошенком у Львові у січні. Пайєт прибула до Львова, щоб підтримати 200 канадських вояків збройних сил Канади, що беруть участь в операції UNIFIER в Навчальному центрі НГУ у Львівській області. Порошенко висловив вдячність Канаді за підтримку України, зокрема накладення санкцій на деяких російських фізичних осіб і компанії. На площі Ринок у Львові 1 липня канадці разом з українцями відсвяткували День Канади. Гості свята змогли скуштувати традиційних млинців з кленовим сиропом, якими частували канадські військові кухарі та працівники посольства. На вуличному хокейному турнірі українська команда Invictus Games позмагалась з канадською, до складу якої, зокрема, входили олімпійські чемпіони Семі Джо Смолл та Біллі Бриджес. Також до Львова прибули канадські хірурги, які провели серію лекцій на тему лікування дітей. Лекції під керівництвом нейрохірурга доктора Джеймса Рутки транслювалися на цілу Україну. Доктор Рутка провів кілька операцій у Львівській міській дитячій лікарні і активно сприяє наданню нашому місту дуже необхідного обладнання через Фонд Темерті. Дякуймо, Канадо!

The Austrian leader strolled through the city centre, visited the Austrian library, and met with students at the Ukrainian Catholic University.

TOP EU−COOPERATION PROJECT: THE BESKYD TUNNEL The Beskyd Tunnel, a critical part of Ukraine’s rail connection to the EU, was finally completed in May. The project is crucial in integrating EU-Ukraine trade and fostering deeper ties between the regions. The new 1.8 km-long tunnel was built with the help of a 55 million EUR loan by the European Investment Bank. Located in the Carpathian Mountains near the Hungarian and Slovak borders, the new twin-track electrified tunnel replaces the

bottleneck-prone single-track section and promises to increase international freight operations dramatically. The hope is to more than double freight traffic over the next 10 years, in line with European quality standards, while adding up to 40 additional passenger trains per day. The new tunnel will substantially increase the export capacity of Ukrainian products, while also significantly reducing journey times between Lviv and the border city of Chop.

Розташований в Карпатських горах поблизу угорського і словацького кордонів, новий двоколійний електрифікований тунель замінює старий одноколійний й дає можливість різко збільшити об’єми міжнародних вантажних перевезень. Введення в експлуатацію нового тунелю обіцяє більш ніж подвій-

не збільшення перевезень вантажів протягом наступних 10 років відповідно до європейських стандартів якості, а також до 40 додаткових пасажирських поїздів на день. MOST DYNAMIC LANDMARK: LVIV AIRPORT REACHES 1,500,000 PASSENGERS FOR THE FIRST TIME Ukraine is experiencing an aviation boom thanks to a growing economy and the introduction of visa-free EU travel. Look no further than the record number of passengers at the Lviv International Airport, which hit 1.5 million passengers for the first time – the second straight year the airport hit the one million visitor mark. The numbers make the Lviv Airport Ukraine’s busiest outside of Kyiv, marking a sharp turnaround since the facility got a facelift in advance of the EURO 2012 football tournament. Less than 300,000 passengers flew through Lviv in 2011, meaning that the airport has increased

traffic five-fold in just seven years. The airport expects to surpass the two million mark in 2019, thanks to five new routes by Irish low-cost giant Ryanair and new routes from Wizz Air and Ernest. Airlines that fled the market after hostilities began in Eastern Ukraine are also returning to Lviv making 2019 a lucrative year for Western Ukraine’s travel capital.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE YEAR: 100 YEARS OF THE ELECTRON Lviv’s Electron Corporation hit a monumental milestone in December by celebrating its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1918 as ‘Contact’, the company was one of Galicia’s first electro-technical enterprises and produced items like electrical appliances, electric motors and related products, telephones and switchboards, electricity meters, and other electrical products. The company was

responsible for creating the Lviv Television Factory (LTF) in the 1950s, which became a household name in the USSR for producing one its most popular TV sets – the ‘Verkhovyna’. By the 1960s, the ‘Vohnyk’ and ‘Electron’ models were found in virtually every home in the Soviet Union, ensuring a massive production and assembly centre based in the Western Ukrainian capital. In fact, Electron

televisions were the only domestic brand to be exported to Western Europe. Today, Electron serves primarily as a machine-building corporation that produces electric transportation, multi-purpose vehicles like ambulances for municipal services, climate systems for vehicles, and radio-electronic equipment for military use. PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR: ROMAN HORODECHNYI Rising some 8,850 metres into the sky, Mount Everest is literally located at the top of the world. That’s why so many people have wanted to conquer it. Over 2,200 people have succeeded in their quest and now Lviv has one of their own. Leopolitan Roman Horodechnyi became the first Leopolitan to reach the world’s tallest peak when he summited with a Ukrainian team on 25 May. It’s not an easy task – more than 200 people have lost their lives attempting the same thing! Congratulations to Roman on his remarkable achievement.

In a year when many Ukrainian athletes left indelible marks on the international stage – from world boxing championships for Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko to the WTA Finals Championship for the world’s No. 4-ranked tennis player Elina Svitolina – none stand taller than Leopolitan wrestler Alla Cherkasova’s incredible gold-medal performance at the Wrestling World Championships in Budapest (Hungary) in October. More than 850 athletes from 97 nations faced off to claim one of the 30 world titles in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s divisions. Lviv State University graduate Alla Cherkasova is on top of the world after claiming the up to 68kg division title with a dramatic 15-10 win over France’s Selena Kumba. Thanks for her excellent performance Alla Cherkasova became October Athlete of the Month by National Olympic Committee in Lviv region and Sports Personality of the Year by Lviv Today.

У змаганнях взяли участь понад 850 спортсменів з 97 країн, які боролись за отримання одного з 30 титулів чемпіонату світу у вільній, класичній та боротьбі для жінок, випускниця Львівського державного університету Алла Черкасова стала чемпіонкою світу в категорії до 68 кг, здобувши перемогу над Селеною Кумбою з Франції. За високі спортивні досягнення Алла Черкасова була визнана спортсменкою місяця у жовтні відділенням НОК України у Львівській області та спортсменкою року журналом Lviv Today.

MOST MEMORABLE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT: BIENNALE OF TRUST In October, many of Lviv’s restaurants and cafés embarked on a truly unique platform for trust. The Biennale of Trust event attempted to practically apply the concept of trust in the city – to interesting, yet predictable results. Most Leopolitans will remember the brave ‘Blank Cheque Initiative’, which allowed cus-

tomers to decide what they would pay for meals, non-alcoholic drinks, and service. The goal was for restaurants and cafés to receive the feedback and trust of their patrons. Unfortunately, greedy customers forced many participating locales to back out of the program early because “about half” of the customers

paid substantially less than was indicated on their bills. They reasoned that this greediness showed the challenges the country faces while developing and combatting corruption. Despite this, organisers hope to bring back this unique initiative with a whole new set of social experiments in 2019.

НАЙЦІКАВІШИЙ СОЦІАЛЬНИЙ ЕКСПЕРИМЕНТ: "БІЄНАЛЕ ДОВІРИ" У жовтні багато львівських ресторанів і кафе приєднались до унікального проекту "Бієнале довіри" який мав на меті практично застосувати концепцію довіри в нашому місті. Більшість львів’ян запам'ятають сміливу ініціативу "Відкритий чек", яка дозволяла клієнтам вирішувати, скільки вони будуть

платити за страви, безалкогольні напої та послуги. Метою ресторанів і кафе було отримати відгуки та довіру своїх клієнтів. На жаль, клієнти змусили багатьох місцевих учасників відмовитися від участі тому що близько половини з них платили значно менше, ніж було зазначено в рахунках. Вони пояснювали це

MODEL OF THE YEAR: KHRYSTYNA FEDYK It was just two years ago when Khrystyna Fedyk was first discovered by Lviv’s leading modeling agency – OK'S Models. The 20-year-old I. Franko National University student started with the “wrong stuff” but shortly figured things out and is now leading by example. A great example of a self-starter, Khrystyna used the agency’s advice to develop a promising international portfolio. Chess: Lviv’s Buksa Becomes National Champion Lviv’s Nataliya Buksa became the latest chess prodigy from Lviv to capture a national title after winning the Ukrainian Women’s Chess Championships in Kyiv last month. Buksa bested nine of the country’s finest chess players in a 10-player round-robin event that was highlighted with her claiming the title over Ternopil’s Olha Babiy. Buksa won the World Girls’ Junior Chess Championship in 2015, becoming a grandmaster and qualifying for the 2017 Women’s World Chess Championships. She finished 52nd at that tournament, where Lviv region’s Anna Muzychuk lost the final in rapid tie-breaks. Congratulations to our new Ukrainian champion – Nataliya Buksa!

Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Olena Starikova Lviv region’s Olena Starikova was named Lviv’s December Athlete of the Month after starring in the third round of the Tissot UCI Cycling World Cup last month. The star cyclist returned home from an event at Berlin’s Velodrome with two medals – a gold in the 500m and bronze in the sprint. This comes on the heels of the 22-year-old’s stellar performance at the European championships in August, where she returned home with silver medals in the same events. She’ll look to continued successes in 2019 as she attempts to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Congratulations Olena and best of luck in 2019!

А раніше Наталія Букса виграла чемпіонат світу серед юніорів 2015 року, який проводився у Хантимансійську, здобувши титул гросмейстера і закваліфікувалась на жіночий Чемпіонат світу з шахів 2017 року. На тому турнірі вона зайняла 52 місце, де інша львів’янка Анна Музичук програла у фіналі. Вітаємо нашу нову чемпіонку України!

Найкраща спортсменка місяця: Олена Старикова Вихованка Львівської школи вищої спортивної майстерності велосипедистка Олена Старикова була визнана спортсменкою місяця в грудні за її досягнення на ІІІ етапі Кубку Світу у Берліні (перше і третє місце) та на IV етапі Кубку Світу в Лондоні (четверте місце). Також у серпні минулого року 22-річна спортсменка здобула срібло на чемпіонаті Європи на велотреку в Глазго в командному жіночому спринті. В інших змаганнях Олена представляє Львівську область та Збройні сили України під керівництвом тренера Євгена Болібруха. В 2019 році вона буде виступати й далі, щоб закваліфікуватись на літні Олімпійські ігри 2020 року в Токіо. Вітаємо Олену і бажаємо удачі у 2019 році!

Lviv’s Halychyna Sports Palace hosted the 2018 Winter Fairy Tale national artistic gymnastics tournament on 8–9 December. Nearly every region of Ukraine was represented among the 326 participants aged 6 to 18 years old, alongside athletes from Poland, Moldova, and Belarus. Timed to coincide with the beginning of Lviv’s holiday season, the competition also featured a festive concert program and sweets and other memorable prizes for participants. Representing Lviv’s Galeon Sports School, Lviv’s-own 15-year-old Anastasiya Puhach was named overall champion.

THE ART OF POURING VODKA 2019 B

ack by popular demand – the art of pouring vodka! Here’s a little piece that we originally published in 2013. Locals often don’t even realise just how many rules there are to pouring vodka in Ukraine. At least, not until you start sharing the rules from this list! Try it – they’ll start recognising the rules and add their own that we haven’t even listed. We’ve added new “rules” since we first published. Have we forgotten any? Be sure to tell us at facebook.com/LvivToday! Every culture seems to have its own nuances that require a native’s touch to be perfected. These things seem natural for a local, who can be easily offended when an outsider ‘sins’ when performing the art form. In Ukraine, there is an art to pouring vodka. For guests to Ukraine, here is our expanded guide to pouring vodka.

If you don’t want a fight, get the name right. In Ukraine, it’s called ‘horilka’, not vodka. Unless you’re drinking home brew – then it’s ‘samohonka’. Vodka is the Russian (and Polish) word.

Don’t be a ghost, be ready to toast. There is a whole toasting tradition in Ukraine, but that’s an article for another day. Feel free to “volun-tell” someone to toast, but always be ready to fill in.

To not offend, drink with a friend. While you probably weren’t thinking about it anyways, this is simply a no-go in Ukraine.

The others go first, or else you’ll get cursed. The person pouring is always the last person to have their glass filled. No exceptions.

To not be rude, always have food. Even penny-pinching university students won’t buy a bottle unless they can afford the cheapest black bread or anything else that’s edible to go along with it.

If you spill, you might get killed. Well, probably not. But if you want to keep your friends, don’t make a habit out of it.

One hand to pour or you’re out the door. This adds a degree of difficulty to all of the following rules.

For it to taste like gold, make it cold. This will numb the taste, so only chill (not freeze) if you are drinking premium horilka.

If it’s in the air, stay in your chair. Never. I repeat never pour a shot into a glass being held in the air. This may be the cardinal sin for foreigners.

To prevent conflicts, you just shouldn’t mix. Horilka should be done in shots, although Ukrainians will allow foreigners to mix if you must. You will be judged though…

Leave it in its place; you find some space. This is where the real ‘art’ comes from. I’ve had easier times navigating Lviv’s outrageous traffic than manoeuvring a bottle through mazes of dishes, glasses, and bottles. Remember Point #11.

If you pour, you’re in for more. That’s right, if you pour the first shot you will be pouring the rest of the night, regardless of how many bottles or how many locations are visited. To make it right, make sure it’s light. Yes, you are responsible for ensuring that nobody has a hangover the next day. Be sure to pour with a “light hand”. And good luck with that.

You may be banned, if you use your backhand. So, to recap, the glass must be on the table, it shouldn’t be moved, you pour one-handed, and you mustn’t spill. Oh yeah, for the artistic score, you can’t pour backhanded either. If it’s in the glass, it shouldn’t last. So, you’ve mastered the fine art of the pour and you think

you’ve got it covered. Not at all! Now it’s time to work on your timing. Begin by ensuring that horilka in the glass doesn’t last. You don’t want it to breathe now, do you? 16

Unless agreed, the same for you and me. So, you’re near the bottom of the bottle. Be sure that everyone gets the same amount. If there are 12 drops left and four of you drinking, you do the math. But you wouldn’t be an artist if you left 12 drops left after your last pour…

To not be disowned, don’t drink alone. Never pour a shot for only yourself. Ever.

You’ll look like a dweeb if you pour less than three. Unless you’re at a funeral. Than two is acceptable.

It goes on the floor, when there’s no more. No empty bottles on the table. You don’t want to remind the guests just how light your hand is, do you?

No one can run, until it’s all done. Make sure everyone finishes their shots before they leave. And make sure the bottle is finished. If you’ve perfected the art of the ‘light hand’, this should be easy. You’ll notice the finest artists of the craft. They’re the ones that always pour at all of your big events. So, until you’re there, shchaslyvo miy druh (good luck, my friend) and budmo (cheers)! Lee Reaney

DOUBLE ACT EDUCATING UKRAINIAN TV AUDIENCES ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

ith Ukraine currently at the center of a geopolitical showdown between Russia and the Western world, it has never been more important for Ukrainian audiences to have a solid grasp of contemporary international affairs. This is where TV presenter double act Peter Zalmayev and Taras Berezovets aim to make their mark. The duo host weekly news review show The Week on Ukraine’s Pryamiy channel. Each Saturday evening, they seek to provide analysis of the biggest global headlines from the past week, with a particular focus on Russian hybrid war activities around the world that serve as extensions or echoes of Ukraine’s own struggle with the Kremlin. “One of our main goals is to be educational,” says Berezovets. “This often means providing our viewers with the necessary background and explaining the broader context of international events. After all, politics does not exist in a vacuum.” Berezovets and Zalmayev bring considerable international experience to their current roles. Crimean native Berezovets studied as both an undergraduate and

postgraduate in the UK, while Donetsk-born Zalmayev left the Donbas for the United States in the mid-1990s before finally returning to Ukraine as the Russian offensive of spring 2014 unfolded. This international experience informs their outlook as well as their broadcasting style. “For a long time, I was a Ukrainian voice in the West. Now I’m a Western voice in Ukraine,” quips Zalmayev. Each episode of The Week features four studio guests, but the stars of the show are undoubtedly the hosts themselves. Berezovets and Zalmayev enjoy on-screen banter and try to liven up the often stuffy subject matter of international affairs with liberal sprinklings of quirky humor. One typical scene during a recent show saw the pair dressed up as faux royalty for a brief skit about the birthday celebrations of the UK’s Prince Charles, while Berezovets in particular has a reputation for quick-witted repostes. These lighthearted interludes are a deliberate feature of the show, reflecting the influence of US current affairs comedy hits such as The Daily Show and

Last Week Tonight. “Nothing engages people quite like comedy,” says Zalmayev. “Ukrainian TV could really benefit from more humor in its current affairs coverage.” Ultimately, of course, most of the themes covered in each episode of The Week are no laughing matter. The show addresses the very real drama of the new Cold War and tries to provide Ukrainians with a realistic picture of where their country stands in the hybrid hostilities of the current confrontation. Both hosts argue that a clearer understanding of the international environment is essential for today’s Ukrainian audiences as they seek to make sense of the choices facing their own country. “It is true to say that many Ukrainians continue to see international affairs through rose-tinted glasses,” says Berezovets. “They think Ukraine has the support of the entire international community and believe this will last forever. In reality, there are no such guarantees. The current unity of the West is fragile and could end at any moment. That is why it is so important for Ukrainian viewers to know how things really stand.”

The situation is now changing. The growth in quantity of companies providing these services doesn’t always mean an increase in the level of such services. Companies don’t compete for the values of their clients, but for the values they’ve set for themselves. How do you choose the one that will not only be able to provide professional, high-quality services, but also meets the needs of the client?

EBA SPECIAL THE IMAGE OF UKRAINE This year, at EBA Western Ukrainian Office we decided to stimulate the awareness of the great investment opportunities provided by regions in Ukraine for international community. We had a lot of meetings and projects to maintain this idea. Our annual project – Annual General Membership Day 2018 (AGM Day 2018, December 14) – was of course also devoted to this aim. Within this project, we had several events – business breakfast, conference, outdoor visit to Nexans and evening reception. We invited the representatives from the EU, foreign Embassies and other regions to learn more about Lviv region by presenting projects from IT and automotive industries as the examples of regional best practices and success stories. At business breakfast hosted by our partner Split Restaurant we had an opportunity to hear how actually does the Ukrainian realities look like for the foreign countries and investors abroad. We also initiated the “Safe&Sound. Business Opportunities of Western Ukraine” conference as part of the Annual General Membership Day 2018 where we continue our discussion. Among our invited guest speakers were: Daniel Kramer, Deputy Head of Sector of the Trade Section of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Cathy Cottrell, First Secretary for Energy Policy and Head of the Commercial Section of the British Embassy, Dmytro Pankratov, Business Coordinator of the Embassy of Norway in Kyiv; Roman Matys, Head of Investment Policy Department of Lviv Regional State Administration; Dmytro Sherenhovskyi, Head of the Academic Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University; Yuriy Reznyk, Director of Klingspor. The moderator of the meeting was Anton Podilchak, Head of EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council, Managing Partner at Advice Group. Anton Podilchak asked the guests speakers and attendees to comment on how potential investors perceive Ukraine, what is the image of Ukraine from the point of view of foreign representatives, and what is the situation with the investment climate in Lviv region. Here are the main comments we would like to share:

Daniel Kramer, Deputy Head of Sector of the Trade Section of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, commented on the image of Ukraine: Everyone in the EU is aware that Ukraine is full of potential. It has skilled workforce, it is a huge country, it has big population, industrial tradition etc. This is the common knowledge in the EU. But the question that always arises why it doesn’t attract more investment. What we see that is a lack of rule of law and corruption. That is the biggest issue now. It infects the investment climate. Talking about security, according to surveys and to my personal experience it is not the top among the issues for investors, but it is still matters a lot. Since the martial law we had several calls from European companies from European member states asking us what is the situation, and whether they should invest. We said to them that from Kyiv it doesn’t seemed to have an impact. Looks like more an internal politics. The level of risk did not change. Lviv and this region, of course, is far from Donbas and far from Crimea, but investors perceive Ukraine as the whole. Here in Lviv region the situation is better with rule of law, but investors see you as one country. The EU is here for you and the Association Agreement will help your business. We have a lot of new projects for SMEs. Do not hesitate to contact me to help SMEs with innovations and to connect businesses with the EU.

Cathy Cottrell, First Secretary for Energy Policy and Head of the Commercial Section of the British Embassy, added how she sees Ukraine: In a context of Brexit, Ukraine is the priority country for the UK and not because it is strategical country, but also because we see a great business opportunities here. Me and my team invite British companies who would like to work here in Ukraine and we will have more personnel at the Embassy to develop relationships here, if needed. People do not know that here are lots of opportunities. We should give them successful examples to overcome that negative stories that coming to the news every day. Remember that you have a team in the Embassy who can help you to find partners in the UK.

Markiyan Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger Law Firm, Honorary Consul of the Austrian Republic in Lviv: In the last 15 years, a lot has changed. I remember how we lived 15–20 years ago. Would an ordinary Ukrainian easily get a foreign passport, would you be able to register your car easily, would you get a child in a good school without a bribe or connections? I believe that we should be more positive for what we have now. For example, Ukraine is one of the most open countries in the world in terms of public information. Once I met a representative from a developed European country and he said that he was fed up with corruption. I was surprised that we talk about corruption is such country, I think that we must accept that corruption is simply everywhere, in different forms and means, in different situations. If we look at Ukraine, we can see that it is one of the most successful countries combating small corruption in a short period of time. We have to start with the small steps. You cannot do reforms overnight. You cannot throw out all the judges and ask new ones to come. Because people who are decent and intelligent, work for big international and domestic companies, have their own business. They would not leave their current company tomorrow and come to work, for example, as a judge. We live in a time of constant transformation. Who we are today does not mean will be the same tomorrow. All our best practices could be completely inapplicable tomorrow. All business should be ready for this. We don’t think strategically enough. As a representative of Austria here in Lviv very often I hear that somebody from the army goes and asks the EU that we need some socks, gloves, clothes etc. I think that global community expects to hear that we have one of the best armies in the world, military equipment in the front of the border, we are 100 percent safe for their investments. We receive help from foreign partners, for which we are very grateful, but our internal problem is our problem and we should solve it. We will get enough advice, assistance, but we should solve our problems ourselves. We are the ones who should improve our country. Furthermore, we should provide the maximum level of trust. Trust is something that brings investment to the country. If investor doesn’t trust us, he will not be here. Trust is the main argument for today.

Dmytro Pankratov, Business Coordinator of the Embassy of Norway in Kyiv, also noted: Business expect transparent, open system and predictable environment. Unless we make sure that environment is predictable, the courts are working, business will be very careful in entering markets of Ukraine. Potentially Ukraine is very interesting market for Norway, for example such spheres as energy, agriculture has great potential. Traditionally fish and food are more or less stable.

Dmytro Sherenhovskyi, Head of the Academic Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University, commented on the security situation in Ukraine: Nevertheless, security matters. This is an important issue and we have a number of data conducted together with the European Universities for example with Birmingham University, where we tried to identify the situation in Ukraine. There are the cases from Balkan states, Afghanistan or Iraq showing that sequences matter. First should be stability present in the country, then economy development and political development. What is interesting in Ukrainian case that all these researches show that being free child state during the post conflict or conflict period is the best chance for local community and business sector to influence. The state system is the most vulnerable at one point of time, but it is also the most open for the transformation. The most urgent issue and there is a data showing that that influence on the situation is a lack of recognition that private sector can influence. The second thing is the lack of understanding of what business communities and NGOs can actually do. What should be done? We should have success stories and show that business community have legitimacy over the business environment and make these reforms and push these reforms. This is very vital thing for the country that face conflict. The business should incorporate state building and peace building objectives into their operational agenda here in the country. This factor will also help a lot.

Roman Matys, Head of Investment Policy Department of Lviv Regional State Administration, gave some statics and insights for 2016-2018 period concerning the investment in Lviv region: Before we started to implement the Strategy “Lviv Region – European Factory” nobody talked about automotive industry here. But this year Lviv hosted Automotive Forum for the second time with the representatives from more than 15 countries. We organized Business Process Operations Forum for the first time in Ukraine to promote moving share centers from other countries to Lviv region. Everybody think about the automotive sphere only as a cable production but that is wrong. We change our priority from mass production to automated production and R&D. If we meet a company that would like to set up here with more than 1000 employees, we can propose only 2 production sites without hard competition for talents. All others are occupied. The main things that help us to attract investors are favorable business environment, comfort in doing business and support from the local authorities. Special department which accompanies the investor act as a barrier against corruption and give investors understanding that authorities are concerned about doing business comfortably in the region. We work with CRM system and can easily track all the stages and task that should be done. During 2016-2018 in Lviv region 240 new enterprises were opened, 25000 workplaces were created, promotion of business opportunities in Lviv was made in 105 countries, 8 international events were organized, 383, 6 mln dollars of investments were involved to region.

Yuriy Reznyk, Director of Klingspor, commented on doing business in Ukraine from business prospective: We are a German company from abrasive materials manufacturing. This year we celebrated 125-year anniversary worldwide. We have only 4 production companies worldwide and one of them located here in Ukraine. We set up our Ukrainian company 10 years ago. After 2 years at our head office we decided to implement a new big project – production of diamond cutting blades. We are the only company who produce this type of project. We slowly remove some parts of production from France to Ukraine. We do not have any claims worldwide concerning our product. We are stable plant as for the mother company. We plan to invest more into new equipment to continue our development in Ukraine.

Svyatoslav Belei, Head of Integrity & Compliance Department at ABB, also added concerning situation in Ukraine: We talk a lot about security and rule of law, but such situations have never stopped ABB global company. We have business in India, in Israel. The only problem in Ukraine for us is the judicial system. It is good to bring such companies as ABB with brilliant compliance practices. The situation has improved significantly during the last 10 years of my experience. The tendency here in region is getting better and better. The more foreign investments we will have here, the more positive practices we have the better will be the climate tomorrow or already yesterday.

Taras Kitsmey, Co-owner of SoftServe, commented on the situation in IT sphere in Ukraine: The environment that we have today is very beneficial for IT Industry. We have results. We can argue a lot, but we have proven that the industry is growing. Maybe IT has some specifics. We are exporting services. We deliver them through the internet. We do not need certificates, plants etc. Our people working from around the globe, but they live in Ukraine. Today we have more than 120 000 IT Engineers in Ukraine. The industry is growing for about 20% per year. We are building great synergy locally in Ukraine with other IT companies. We are building together IT Park, one IT House for software engineers with attractive price. We are competing, but we are building the environment based on trust. The same approach we use in work with our clients. Our main clients are located in the USA and EU. We see that such values as openness, transparency and trust bring us to results.

As the meeting summary Anton Podilchak stated that the key to success for investors is not only to have money, capital, resources but also good local partners, that each of us should think positive and should not send mixed messages to global community, try to stick to the best practices and everything will be great. The more positive we talk about the environment the more positive it becomes.

The highlight at the end of the AGM Day 2018 was a festive reception at the Aria Motors BMW Dealer Center, where, by showing BMW cars, we were able to demonstrate the potential of Ukraine – cases made by Bader Ukraine, cables provided by Nexans, IT solutions and metal tubes from well-known companies operating in Ukraine. Within the event on behalf of the Association member companies, we had an opportunity to express our gratitude to the Lviv Regional State Administration, State Fiscal Services in Lviv region, Lviv Customs Services, and the Lviv Municipal Council for cooperation in creating a favourable investment environment.

As director of Ukrainian company I would like to inquire whether it is possible to find information regarding inspections of our company scheduled for 2019. Kind regards, Marc. Dear Marc, 2018 is coming to an end and it's time to begin planning the new 2019 year. Yes, indeed, recently internet resources are overwhelmed with information regarding inspections of companies scheduled for the upcoming year. In particular, according to Opendatabot – an open source platform – in 2019 tax authorities shall conduct 6721 inspections. Next year transport, wholesale and retail companies shall be inspected most frequently, however banks, insurance companies, securities traders, representative offices of non-residents are also included to the inspections schedule. Tax inspections are scheduled for companies that meet the risk criteria defined by the order of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine. In particular, these include: • Companies whose corporate profit tax level is lower than such in the relevant branch; • Companies whose VAT level is lower than such in the relevant branch; • Companies that declared the negative value of the object of taxation of corporate profit tax;

LVIV INTERVIEW країни. Беззмінна номінація Burning Bike та незабутнє Afterparty – ось така програма. Думаю, такої концентрації івенторів Україна ще не збирала. Цього року Ви будете спікером на Event Industry Forum – є бажання вчити, викладати, ділитись досвідом? І як взагалі вчитися в цій галузі? Цього разу працюватиму із темою "Урочисте відкриття – другого шансу не буде" для корпоративних клієнтів та подій, а також модеруватиму гарячу панельну дискусію у центральному залі: "Івент-хол у Львові – дискусія щодо перспектив майбутнього". Щодо бажання вчити, можу сказати що у мене величезний практичний досвід з організації подій, відповідно можу годинами викладати інформацію. Проблема у тім, що у нашій країні практично не вчать нашій справі, лише нещодавно з’явилися приватні школи та курси, також дисципліну ввели у КНУКіМ. На мою думку освіту івентора потрібно отримувати у комплексі поєднання теорії, практичних занять та участі у організації реальних подій. Сама тема є дуже важливою, на форумі ми присвятили проблемі освіти окрему наукову дискусію. Чи часто клієнти вважають, що вони і самі взмозі провести захід? Що повинен враховувати замовник, пускаючись у самостійне івент-плавання? Без сумніву основним конкурентом івентагенції сьогодні являється сам клієнт, котрий силами власних спеціалістів проводить заходи. Але у будь-якому випадку правила організації події є однакові. Якщо узагальнити, то важливо зафіксувати мету заходу: які саме завдання мають бути виконані завдяки івенту; глибоко опрацювати творчу концепцію та усі елементи ї ї наповнення, паралельно співставити ідею із можливостями щодо ї ї реалізації; однозначно до молекул сформувати і продумати бюджет події, прописати чек-лист по реалізації усіх пунктів проекту від стадії задуму до практичної підготовки, проведення, демонтажу та збору зворотнього звязку. Під час події намагатися рухатись виключно за сценарієм але ретельно слідкувати за ситуацією, оскільки можуть знадобитися кардинальні миттєві зміни. При цьому функції усіх учасників проекту мають бути прописані та проговорені, наймані люди та служби мають бути пробріфовані, між координаторами має бути постійний зв’язок. Це якщо коротко.

Чи можете Ви, дивлячись на захід, сказати, чи організований він професійною агенцією або зусиллями самого клієнта? Будь-яка подія має як зовнішні, так і внутрішні параметри, по котрих можна проаналізувати ї ї ефективність. На мою думку немає значення, хто саме є організатором, важливо те, як саме робиться робота, наскільки правильно підібрані усі складові та елементи заходу, чи обійшлося без форс-мажорів, наскільки привітним і клієнтоорієнтованим є персонал організатора та якою є загальна атмосфера події. В яких випадках витрати на подієвий маркетинг Ви вважаєте ефективними? Навіщо компаніям витрачатися на івенти? Сьогодні прослідковуються світова тенденція зростання ролі івент-маркетинг у у житті корпорацій та окремих спільнот людей. На подіях вирішуються ділові питання та відбуваються стратегічні знайомства та переговори, завдяки подіям відбуваються відкриття об’єктів та презентації торгівельних марок, на подіях відпочивають та святкують найважливіші моменти життя.

This is coordinated by Denys Rynsky, the founder of Global Events, who shares his secrets on how to create a leading event organisation company in Western Ukraine.

Let’s talk about the Event Industry Forum – what made you feel that 2018 was the right time to start it? Our team’s main activity is organising events of any size or scale, but the greatest motivation is the challenge of implementing complex projects. The Event Industry Forum is essential for the development of our business and that means we have even more initiative and drive to see its success. We understand how important the event is for the event management industry, which is why we work quickly, effectively, and fearlessly.

What did you discover from hosting the first Event Industry Forum? Organising such events is, no doubt, extremely important for experience sharing among industry professionals, helps train those new to the industry, and increases opportunities for networking. Thousands of people are engaged in the event management industry in one way or another in Ukraine, so to bring them all to Lviv shows that our city is a very interesting city not only for leisure, but that we take seriously the impact the industry has on the region’s economy. I would love to see Lviv become the event organisation capital of Ukraine.

How will this year’s forum differ from last year’s? The main difference will be the different themes in different halls. We will separate corporate events, conventions (business events), festivals and concerts, and introduce the wedding events market. The main hall will focus on topics important to all types of events and feature activities from each of the other halls. There will be roundtables, Q&As, and other presentations. Another highlight will be the event-services Event-Expo, which will showcase the latest novelties in the event industry markets. We have a stellar speakers list featuring over 70 experts from a dozen countries, including Irfan van Ewjik, the founder of Tomorrowland; Claudia Cattai, Olympic Games organiser; and Andriy Fedoriv, Ukraine’s top marketing expert. Of course, there will also be an unforgettable afterparty, where you can hobnob with some of Ukraine’s most influential promoters, wedding planners, music directors, and event organisers.

You will also be a speaker at this year’s forum – do you have a desire to teach and share your experiences? How will people learn something new about this industry? This time I will present on ‘Festive Opening – No Second Chance’ for corporate clients and events. I will also moderate a panel in the central hall on ‘Lviv’s EventHall – Future Perspectives’. As far as my desire to teach is concerned, I do have a tremendous amount of practical experience organising events, so I can share this for years to come. The problem is that in Ukraine, nobody provides lessons about the event management industry and only recently some private schools and courses have opened. The Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, for example, has added the discipline. In my mind, the education of an event manager should combine theory with the practice of organising real events. This topic is very important and we dedicate special time at the forum to discuss issues surrounding education in the event industry.

How often to clients think that they can organise an event by themselves? What should be considered if one wants to organise their own events? For sure, the main competitor to an event management agency is the client themselves, who want to organise engaging events with the help of their own people. In any case, the rules of event organising are the same. It is important to shape the main aim of the event – what tasks should be completed at the event, what is the creative concept that should be worked thoroughly throughout all the event’s elements? At the same time, you need to make sure you have the available means to implement your ideas, go through the budget pointby-point, and to make checklists of including all components of your idea: preparation, realisation, debrief, and feedback. You should try to stick to the script as much as possible during the event, while being flexible enough to make any necessary changes – big or small. Every participant’s functions should be written down and gone through verbally, while any outside employees should be thoroughly briefed. Each coordinator must be available at all times and staff should know how to contact them. And that’s just the basics.

Are you able to, while watching an event, tell if it was organised by a professional agency or by the clients themselves? Each event has its own internal and external parameters to evaluate its effectiveness. For me, it doesn’t matter who organised the event; it’s more important to see how the work is done, if the elements of the event were chosen correctly, how prepared organisers were for unforeseeable circumstances, how friendly and client-oriented the organisers were, and what the event’s overall atmosphere was like in general.

What would you consider effective event marketing? Why should companies spend money to organise events? Today we see the growth of event marketing globally. At events people solve work issues, make strategic connections, and conduct negotiations that can lead to new projects and open new markets. They can rest and celebrate the most important moments of their lives.

What are the latest trends in event management? Are there some nifty formats or themes? Considering that for most corporate clients the event is perceived as a necessary form of outreach, I can predict an increase in the demand for the organisation of corporate celebrations. Customers want an original concept and interesting location and actively take part in the whole creative process. Speaking about business events, I can characterise the last three years as “forum mania”. Conferences, forums, and seminars were organised on numerous topics – from motivation coaching to specialised scientific research events. It has become traditional to organise a festive opening of the venue, office, or any other activity – like celebrating the one-year anniversary of a brand. A well-developing business can be seen in an interesting program, including top-notch entertainment, well-chosen décor, and innovative advertising.

What’s your secret to being a leader in the event management industry? Since we started two years ago, our company has organised 157 events. Each event was custom-tailored to each client and included a professional team catering to every small detail. While prepping for an event, we become part of the customer’s company. We study their corporate culture and peculiarities. This allows us to highlight the company’s values in order to make the event more precise. We work honestly, with inspiration, and we highly value each other. Our clients are grateful for this approach as this allows us to build long-term, trusting relationships – which allows us to organise even more events and help the market grow.
