t seems that Lviv’s little secret is out – that the city is one of the best places in Europe to travel to and do business in. It’s not just that UK’s ‘The Telegraph’ named it one of Europe’s top places to visit in 2018. Nor that it received that distinction from ‘Lonely Planet’ matter in 2017. It’s that more and more people from across Ukraine and around the world have started to discover the city for themselves. It’s their word-of-mouth upon their return home (91% say they want to return!), and the concerted efforts of the city’s business, hospitality, and political communities, that have made Lviv the place to be in 2018. The hard-earned reputation of being one of Europe’s premier tourism destinations, and one of the continent’s hottest emerging business centres, brought a record number of tourists to the city last year, and that number is expected to grow. Air traffic in Lviv rose by nearly 50 percent last year – and soared a further 46 percent last month. Train traffic increased five-fold in 2017. Tourists spent a quarter of a billion dollars last year. Record air traffic, record train traffic, and record tourists spending a record amount of money – if 2017 was Lviv’s coming-out party, 2018 is its time to shine. Ukraine introduced e-visas and visa-on-arrival for a few countries last year and is looking at greatly expanding those services.

An acknowledged virtuoso of the jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, he is just as dynamic and vivacious on the piano, timbales, vocals, and keyboard. He delights in presenting a diverse and exhilarating show featuring Afro-Cuban jazz, bebop, straight up jazz, and so much more.

Born on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. A protégé of Gillespie’s, Sandoval is a 10-time Grammy winner and an Emmy winner that has become one of the world’s foremost entertainers. He has performed live at the Oscars, the Grammys, and the White House, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Barack Obama in 2013.

He is a founding member of the Grammywinning group Irakere, whose explosive mix of jazz, classical, rock, and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the music industry. Shurov has practiced music for many years, experimenting with different styles and arrangements. He writes his own lyrics, composes music, sings, and plays the piano. He is most well-known for having been a member of Ukraine’s most popular rock band, Okean Elzy, from 2001-04. But he also cofounded the Esthetic Education band (2004-08) and his latest and most successful project, Pianoboy. #HASH CODE 2018 1 March from 18:30 at the UCU Hash Code Hub (2A Kozelnystska St.) The UCU Hash Code Hub will play host on 1 March to #Hash Code 2018, a programming competition open to students and industry professionals. As always, this year’s event will consist of two rounds. The online qualification round will take place on 1 March from 18:30 to 22:30. Top teams will be invited to Google Dublin to compete in the Final Round of the competition on 28 April. For each round, a real-life challenge created by Google engineers will be attempted by teams of two to four participants. nternational Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements regardless of their national, ethnic, linguistic, economic, or political backgrounds. Feminism should

be practiced every day. The idea of women having equal rights to men isn’t an agenda, it should be the way of life. But we all need a boost, and International Women’s Day has been lifting women up for over a century. The eighth of March is a day

to celebrate the women you admire and pay tribute to women who developed or are currently developing creative technologies to solve problems. From ancient times, women have been viewed as the guardians of the hearth, so science and other social activities

have been the prerogative of men. Regardless, there are many well-known women in history who have come up with truly fundamental inventions and have broken down stereotypes about women’s logic and that the engine of progress can only be led by men.

Sarah Mather patented her periscope in 1845. An optical instrument used for observation from a sheltered location, the device later became pivotal in submarines. American inventor Josephine Cochrane designed and built the first mechanised dishwasher in 1886, 40 years before the device became commonplace in homes. According to legend she was frustrated from having her family’s porcelain destroyed during washing and said “If no one is going to invent a dishwashing machine, then I’ll do it myself.” African-American Ellen Eglui invented the washing machine drum and sold the patent for it in 1888 for $18 because “no one would be a washing machine if he knew that the patent for it was owned by some kind of ‘black woman’”. The windshield wipers were invented by Mary Anderson in 1903. She felt sorry for the driver who, during a blizzard, was constantly forced to stop the car to shovel snow from the windshield.

English mathematician Ada Lovelace is known for the creation of the first description of a computer, a draft of which was designed by Charles Babbage, and the writing of its for program in 1840. The program became an algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers, which makes Lovelace the first computer programmer in history. She also coined the terms “cycle” and “work cell”. Used extensively for food supply during the First World War, American refrigeration engineer Mary Engle Pennington introduced the first mobile refrigeration plants in 1907. In 1816, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot turned the winemaking industry on its head thanks to the ‘remuage’ technology that rids champagne of sediment after three months allowing the drink to become crystal clear. Earlier champagnes were cloudy (through the pellet containing the dead yeast) and did not have the status of elite wines.

French-Polish chemist and teacher Maria SklowdowskaCurie (Marie Curie) and her husband discovered the chemical elements of radium and polonium. She became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize, and the very first double winner (Physics in 1903, Chemistry in 1911). She remains history’s only research to win the distinguished award in two different fields of natural sciences.

Olha Brovarets is the youngest Doctor of Sciences in Ukraine. At just 31 years old, she has already made a discovery that could help in finding the cure for cancer. Her research lies in the structure of DNA and how incorrect pairs of molecules are formed. These pairs are the reason for cancer and their nature and source of appearance remain a mystery. But Olha managed to calculate the regularity with which it happens. Main cancer researchers have already noticed Olha and her discovery and her results have been confirmed by colleagues in the USA, who carried out research in their own laboratories. Now they are exchanging information in order to bring quicker and better results for such an important issue as cancer treatment.

Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr, the woman many critics and fans alike regard as the most beautiful ever to appear in films, was born Hedwig Eva Kiesler in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of Gertrud (Lichtwitz), from Budapest, and Emil Kiesler, a banker from Lemberg (now known as Lviv). Hedwig had a calm childhood, but it was cinema that fascinated her. Her film career was more than successful. In total, Hedy Lamarr earned $ 30 million in filming. But she was also a brilliant scientist who in 1942 patented a secret device that helped devise a frequency-hopping system which made it more difficult for communications by broadcast frequency to be intercepted by the enemy. The device has been used in American torpedoes since 1962 and eventually formed the foundation for modern technologies such as wifi, GPS and Bluetooth. The reason she set up inventor's room in her house and pursued inventing as a hobby was that she didn't drink, didn't smoke and didn't like parties. Any inventors willing to look beyond Lamarr's beauty would have found a kindred spirit. She embodied the stereotype of the classic inventor who loved to tinker — her lesser-known inventions include an instant fizzy soda cube and a trash receptacle attached to tissue boxes. She received an award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1997 for her pioneering work in spread-spectrum technology, and that same year Lamarr became the first female to receive the BULBIE™ Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, considered the "Oscars" of inventing.

Ann Moore saw the delight with which African children were placed behind their mothers while in Africa for Peace Corps in the 1960s. She designed the popular backpack for carrying children known as the Snugli. Things develop very quickly in the modern world. Almost every week we hear about a new invention or technology that is ready to improve our lives. When you think about recent technologies, what countries come to mind? Japan? Korea? America? Very few people think about Ukraine. But in Ukraine, many inventors spend every day looking at how to improve the world. Here are some inventions made by Ukrainian scientists and entrepreneurs. The invention of a ‘candy bar for weight loss’ brings sport to a new level, just ask our Olympic athletes and university handball team! The bars are made of nuts, dried apricots, and raisins, are covered with real chocolate, and each contains an active component. Each treat helps to sustain athletic exercises and increase their efficiency. With three bars to choose from (Drive, Impulse, or Energy) – all for a different purpose – these treats can even be found abroad. The idea belongs to Lyudmila Senogonova, a Doctor of Engineering in the commodity department at the Shevchenko Luhansk National University.

Bette Nesmith Graham, known as the inventor of ‘liquid paper’, was a simple corrector – she corrected the mistakes of typists. After reviewing the basics of chemistry and spending much time in her garage experimenting with mixtures of white colour, she at last discovered one that glosses over the error, quickly dried up, and allowed reprinting. Ever wondered if a brassiere could be converted into a life-saving device? Well, Dr. Elena Bodnar did. And if you think this invention was a bust (pun intended), you better think again! Bodnar’s ‘Emergency Bra’ converts into a gas mask in no time. It will not only save the wearer’s life, but also helps the woman save another’s as well. Bodnar won the 2009 Ig Nobel Public Health Prize for the breast support-cum-life-saving device. The idea came to her after experiencing the aftermath of a nuclear reactor explosion. “It takes only 25 seconds to save your and another person’s life. Five seconds to snap and convert your bra into a gas mask, 20 seconds to choose which man’s life to save”, she says cheekily. The bra-cum-gas mask can withstand polluted air from radiological, biological, fire, and other natural disasters. They multifunction ‘Emergency Bra’ has the features of a regular bra, a nursing bra, a strapless bra, and a gas mask – all in one. THIS MONTH'S SPECIAL Tamara Voshchylo, a 19-year-old techie from Ternopil, created a talking glove for the hearing impaired. ISIOY (I Speak Instead of You) is a glove-like device that translated sign language into speech. It connects with a smartphone via Bluetooth. When a person signs, the data from the glove is sent to the phone with a pre-installed voice app. Every expression has a sequence number recorded in both devices and the phrase that corresponds to the number is pronounced. You don’t even need to have a command of sign language, you can invent your own! All you need to do is program your own gesture – which takes less than 15 seconds – and assign it to a letter or

sentence. There are a few similar products on the market today, but none that connect with smartphones. The advantage of Tamara’s device is that the glove fits the needs of those that don’t speak sign language. It also works for those who have undergone throat surgery, had a stroke, or have temporarily lost their voice. Luckily society always offers a place for brave, new ideas and stunning new inventions. We trust that Ukrainian women inventors will continue to come up with some of the world’s most ingenious inventions in order to continue to make our lives more easy and comfortable.

Inspired by NASA space technology, Alla Bozhko and Kateryna Stetsenko created a gadget that will allow you to find stolen bikes. “With the help of a special device in the bicycle’s fork, the web service can track your bike on its online map”, they explain. “It is also possible to prevent the actual theft. This is the main difference from other bike lights.” The device will cost $35 USD and they plan to develop a separate business model for each market. The internet is full of news about entertainment inventions. No wonder – people like them and pay money for them, so it’s a great way to make money. But besides you need health to enjoy your wealth and happiness. Luckily, young inventors realise this and have made a significant effort to improve the lives of challenged people.

LVIV SOCIETY POROSHENKO MEETS WITH CANADIAN GOVERNOR GENERAL Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with Canadian Governor General Julie Payette – also the country’s Commander-in-Chief – in Lviv in January to discuss issues of further cooperation. Payette arrived in Lviv to show her support to Canadian soldiers taking part in the UNIFIER operation in Ukraine. During her stay, she visited the ATO Heroes Memorial and met with members of the Canadian and Ukrainian armed forces at the military police training centre, which was established as part of the UNIFIER operation in 2017 with the help of Canadians.

Payette discussed bilateral relations between Canada and Ukraine with President Poroshenko. Speaking in Lviv at a joint briefing following the discussion, Poroshenko said the relationship between the two countries has shown remarkable progress and brought fruitful results over the past year. He thanked Ottawa for supporting Ukraine’s defence sector and specifically for providing training instructors to Ukrainian troops and for allowing Canadian exporters to sell weapons to Ukraine.

Під час свого перебування вона відвідала Меморіал Героїв АТО та зустрілась з членами канадських та українських збройних сил у навчальному центрі військової поліції, створеному в рамках операції UNIFIER у 2017 році за допомогою канадців. Українські та канадські представники обговорили двосторонні відносини між нашими державами. Виступаючи у Львові на спільному брифінгу після обговорення Порошенко заявив, що відносини між нашими двома країнами продемонстрували значний прогрес і принесли плідні результати за минулий рік. Він подякував Оттаві за підтримку українського оборонного сектора, зокрема, забезпечення підготовки інструкторів для українських військ та дозвіл канадським експортерам продавати зброю до України.

PM GROYSMAN PAYS WORKING VISIT TO LVIV Ukraine’s head of government paid a working visit to Lviv on 8 February. Prime Minister Volodomyr Groysman met with students and teachers at the Ukrainian Catholic University and later checked in on the reconstruction work at the Lviv Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre, which is set to open by the end of the year. Groysman also signed a loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development worth 24.7 million EUR for the construction of a solar power plant in the Lviv region. The agreement was signed at the Soft Service IT company during a meeting with Lviv’s business leaders.

EVENT INDUSTRY FORUM Arena Lviv played host to the Event Industry Forum, a special event aimed at the self-identification of the event industry in Western Ukraine – and especially Lviv – from 9–10 February. The forum’s program was put together so to heighten the understanding of an event manager’s work, show new possibilities of the profession, set a new pace for the industry’s market, and create a new impulse for its creativity. The forum featured a dialogue between event organisers, recognised industry leaders, and top speakers from Ukraine and Europe. Speakers were producers, designers, PR managers, strategic planners and, of course, organisers of festivals and business forums. Event participants were able to share their experiences and ideas to tackle some of the industry’s burning questions. Over the event’s two days, Leopolitans and guests of the city had the chance to check out the EventEXPO, a fair of trendy tech and services companies. There was also a special show-area for performances by musicians, different types of artists, and the event’s hosts.

Всі учасники заходу мали чудову нагоду поділитися думками та досвідом, щоб вирішити численні проблеми, що виникають на ринку eventпослуг. Також в рамках форуму був спеціальний шоу-майданчик для проведення презентацій та виступів музикантів, виконавців різних жанрів та господарів подій.

INSO-LVIV CELEBRATED 20TH ANNIVERSARY One of Ukraine’s finest symphony orchestras – Lviv’s-own INSO-Lviv – festively celebrated its 20th anniversary on 28 January in an event hosted by the Lviv Philharmonic Society. Each year the orchestra brings to life some of Ukraine’s grandest and most unique musical projects, like the all-Ukrainian ‘Shared Sky’ project that united Ukraine’s seven largest orchestras in performing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ at airports across Ukraine in a show of Ukrainian unity, or the international cultural event ‘Ready. Steady. BACH! Marathon’ in Lviv that set the record for longest live performance of Bach music in Ukraine. A regular participant of music festivals, both at home and abroad, INSO-Lviv has been recognized with several awards, including: Radio Swiss Classic’s ‘Love’ and ‘Schumann / Beethoven Klavierkonzerte’ Awards, the ‘Golden Disc’, and the ‘Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte’ Award. The group now serves as the basic musical team at several international festivals and competitions and starred at the Johannes Brahms International Competition in Austria and the LvivMozArt festival at home in Lviv last year. Iolanta Pryshlyak, the orchestra’s Board Head and Creative Advisor, was awarded with a special award at the concert by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and Lviv Region Head Oleh Sinyutka. Кожен рік оркестр реалізує деякі з найважливіших та найунікальніших українських музичних проектів, як от всеукраїнський проект "Спільне небо", який об'єднав сім найбільших українських оркестрів у виконанні "Оди до радості" Бетховена одночасно в різних аеропортах України, або міжнародна культурна подія Ready. Steady BACH! Marathon у Львові, який встановив рекорд для найдовшого живого виконання музики Баха в Україні. Регулярний учасник музичних фестивалів, як в Україні, так і за кордоном, INSO-Львів був відзначений кількома нагородами, серед яких, зокрема, Radio Swiss Classic та Schumann/Beethoven Klavierkonzerte, Golden Disс та Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte. Зараз INSO-Lviv є штатним оркестром кількох міжнародних фестивалів та конкурсів, а минулого року виступав на Міжнародному конкурсі ім. Й. Брамса в Австрії та на фестивалі LvivMozArt у Львові. CHEERFUL CHINESE SPRING CONCERT On February 6th Leopolitans and guests of the city were delighted by a special “Jolly Holiday of Spring” concert featuring artists and musicians from China. The event was organised by the Lanhua Cultural Research Centre of China and Ukraine to mark the Chinese New Year, which began on February 16th. Following the Chinese Lunar Calendar, Chinese New Year is every year on a different date. Definitely, it is one of the essential and grandest festivals in China. Every year has different Zodiac animal sign that has the different meaning of life aspects. And the Year 2018 will be the Year of Dog. The year of the dog is good symbol for Chinese as it brings the luck to their house. Distinguished Chinese artists and musicians appearing in beautiful traditional costuming performed both Chinese folk music as well as spectacular acrobatic shows. The event also featured a colourful show by artists from Zhangjiajie city of Hunan Province ensemble. Established in the 2000, this ensemble performed on more than 7000 stages around the world and took part in the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games. The Jolly Holiday of Spring concert was designed to enrich the cultural exchange between East and West and to bring China’s rich, 4000-year-old history to Ukraine.

ВЕСЕЛИЙ КИТАЙСЬКИЙ ВЕСНЯНИЙ КОНЦЕРТ Львів’яни та гості міста 6 лютого мали чудову нагоду побувати на унікальному концерті "Радісне Свято весни" у виконанні китайських музикантів. Цей захід був організований Центром культурних досліджень Ланьхуа Китаю та України, щоб відзначити китайський Новий рік, який розпочинається 16 лютого. За місячним календарем Новий рік у Китаї та багатьох країнах південно-східної Азії припадає щоразу на іншу дату. Це одне з найважливіших і найбільш шанованих свят у Китаї. Кожному року присвячений свій знак китайського зодіаку, який має своє значення. Так, рік 2018 рік буде роком жовтого собаки, який, за народним повір’ям, приносить щастя в дім. У концерті виступили китайські артисти й музиканти у прекрасних традиційних костюмах, які виконували китайську народну музику, а також ефектні акробатичні номери. Також тут можна було побачити барвисте шоу ансамблю з міста Чжанцзяцзе провінції Хунань. Створений у 2000 році, цей ансамбль вже провів понад 7000 виступів на сценах всього світу і, зокрема, брав участь у церемонії відкриття Олімпійських ігор у Пекіні 2008 року. Цей веселий концерт послужив розвитку і збагаченню культурного обміну між Сходом і Заходом та знайомству українців з багатотисячолітньою історією Китаю.

We have identified four or five major cities as attractive hotel locations and are looking to expand our presence.” He believes the expansion of international hotel chains in Ukraine will help to fuel further investment in the country, creating a sense of familiarity and reassurance for business visitors that will bolster Ukraine’s own brand. “If you want to attract people to new destinations, you need branded hotels that they are able to recognize. Investors in particular appreciate the sense of security this creates. It sends out a powerful message that global brands are already present and it is safe to proceed.”

CONNECTING KYIV While Lviv and Odesa are both earning reputations as emerging international tourism destinations, Mr. Henriksen believes much more needs to be done in order to make the most of the Ukrainian capital city’s own tourism appeal. The success of the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2017 served to highlight Kyiv’s tourism credentials, with visiting journalists offering rave reviews. Nevertheless, limited connections and an absence of brand recognition are preventing Kyiv from occupying its natural position as a major East European destination. “Kyiv has huge potential. There is more than enough on offer, from wonderful sightseeing and strolling to the vibrant restaurant scene, but the city must learn to market itself to international audiences,” says Mr. Henriksen.

otel manager Jesper Henriksen has only been in Kyiv for just over half a year, but he has already noticed positive trends in the Ukrainian capital city’s hotel sector that he believes bode well for the Ukrainian economy as a whole.

As Kyiv City Director for Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, Mr. Henriksen oversees Kyiv’s two Radisson Blu hotels and the recently opened 196-room Park Inn Hotel close to the Olympic Stadium Complex. He says rising occupancy rates at these three venues mirror broader trends evident across the Kyiv hotel industry, and argues that as tourist traffic is still at low levels, increased occupancy reflects growing business interest in Ukraine. “2017 has been a breakthrough year for the Kyiv hotel sector, with occupancy rates climbing from around 45% up to 55%. As tourism is not yet a major factor for Kyiv hotels in the traditional sense, we can assume that the vast majority of this extra 10% of visitors are business travelers. This is a clear trend pointing to Ukraine’s emergence as an international investment destination. If people are making the journey to Ukraine, they obviously intend to do business here.”

ODESA AND LVIV AMBITIONS The recent spike in Kyiv business travel arrivals is even more striking given the low point reached in 2014 when revolution and war wrought chaos to the Ukrainian economy and left most hotels in the capital city operating at below 25% occupancy. The subsequent recovery of the Ukrainian hospitality industry has been steady if unspectacular, with a number of new Kyiv hotel openings in 2017 reflecting a growing mood of quiet optimism. Mr. Henriksen says his hotel group shares this positive outlook and is looking to make progress on a number of regional Ukrainian expansion initiatives in 2018, with Odesa and Lviv the top priorities. The Black Sea port city in particular has long attracted interest from a host of major international hotel groups, but Mr. Henriksen is unable to confirm local media reports that Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group is currently poised to become the first global brand with an Odesa flagship hotel. “We have plans in place for Odesa and we are moving forward with Lviv. We simply need to be there,” he says. “Based on the dynamics we are witnessing in Kyiv, we believe Ukraine as a whole will start moving forward soon and this

He is also critical of the lack of cheap flights connecting Kyiv to the rest of Europe – a factor that serves to undermine the positive appeal of the low costs on offer in the Ukrainian capital itself. “City breaks are now one of the most popular types of tourism among European travelers, with many people taking five or six such trips per year. When you are travelling so often, you do not want to be spending hundreds of euros on every airline ticket you purchase and this becomes a major factor when you are looking at potential destinations. Kyiv needs to attract far more budget airlines in order to allow visitors to come for a few days and enjoy the city. This is probably the single biggest challenge the Kyiv tourism industry faces today.” Kyiv will have a wonderful opportunity to promote itself in spring 2018 when the city plays host to the UEFA Champions League Final. This showpiece match of the annual international club football calendar is coming to the Ukrainian capital for the first time. The event will likely attract upwards of 100,000 visitors along with thousands of VIP guests and the world’s media. Like his colleagues in the Kyiv hotel sector, Mr. Henriksen expects to experience a healthy Champions League business boost in the second half of May 2018, but he is more encouraged by the implications for the longerterm development of the Ukrainian capital city’s tourism sector. “The Champions League Final is a great business generator, but more importantly, it will boost the positive image of Kyiv among international audiences. ECONOMIC FORECASTS 2018: WHAT INVESTORS THINK? On February 1, 11 experts with different experiences anticipated the future within an important event – EBA Global Outlook 2018: Think Beyond. Stay ahead. Yes, in the beginning of the year, the business community really needs guidelines or even guarantees that doing business in our country is safe and profitable. More than 400 members of the Association heard feedback on the economic realities and prospects of Ukraine from the representatives of international financial institutions – the International Monetary Fund and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as well as from the members of the Board of the Association.

SO WHAT THE EXPERTS SAID: Gösta Ljungman, Representative of the International Monetary Fund in Ukraine: • Conditions for obtaining Ukraine's next tranche cannot be adjusted. Creation of Anti-corruption Court is a must for Ukraine. • Despite all the difficulties, Ukraine should demonstrate growth this year, including fulfilling its commitments to bring gas prices to market levels and keep inflation • It is good that the NBU's interest rate has increased and the IMF has noticed the growth of Ukraine's international reserves (up to $ 19 billion). At the same time, reserves need to continue to increase (up to $ 30 billion) to secure the country's economy from external shocks.

And I decided to apply for internal elections. I had an honor to get a lot of votes from EBA members and was elected as Committee Leader.

Your credo that motivates you in a daily life

Why you chose HR in your life? I graduated from the Economic Faculty of Lviv National University n.a. Ivan Franko and stayed on the faculty to work as an assistant, wrote my diploma work and planned to obtain the candidate's degree. Then I went to work at the Lviv Institute of Management because there were many interesting projects besides MBA programs, including a project for the training of Ukrainian trainers along with the Munich and Upper Bavaria Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Then I abruptly changed my life: from the lecturer became a trainer. I chose HR because it was so new and exciting at that period of time that I could not do otherwise.

What functions in HR you prefer the most? Mostly, I am fond of employee’s motivation and development. In general how to reveal the potential of the team members so that they would go to work as for a holiday.

Who if not me and when if not now! In general, there are three types of people: those who change the world; those who watch changes and those who are surprised when the world is changing. Each can determine which group he wants to belong to. I decided for myself that it is better not to wait, but to take personal responsibility and do.

What is lacking for modern employers and employees? In my opinion, there is not enough understanding of the speed of change; the world is rapidly developing much faster than before, so requires a proactive reaction, that is, ahead of it. There are many studies about professions and competencies will be relevant in 2025, and which will completely go away to the past. Most probably everyone read about opening a store by Amazon without cashiers and sellers. Due to the rapid development of technologies, there is a lack of new knowledge and skills.

In general, it's a complicated question. I do not like when HRs do not see humans by the systems, indicators, concepts, processes, schemes. People and team create business not otherwise. I do not like when the form prevails over the meaning.

You contribute a lot to train newly created united territorial communities in Lviv region. What are their attitudes towards decentralization? Any changes, even the smallest ones, require good preparation, the first clear explanation and the involvement of the community itself in active action. It all depends on the level of trust in the community. Above mentioned issue could be solved with the help of raising salary but in this situation the economic situation should stay the same in order to feel this raising. TO JOB. Why you decided to become the EBA Western Ukrainian Office HR Committee Chair? Actually, I accepted the invitation to become the committee leader from Taras Yurynts, the previous chairman of the committee, the Director of Guldmann-Ukraine. Of course, I have been considering all the pros and cons, because this is a work on a voluntary basis and need additional time but I am very impressed by the European Business Association itself, the people who work in it, the companies that are involved with it and create this environment, as well as the approaches to work.

What can you advise those who just want to work in HR sphere? Therefore, I think we should think about constructing and developing partnerships and trust between owners of the companies and their employees.

What are the challenges of the labor market discussed by the Association? Today, the issue of recruiting of new employees still exists. Almost all the companies feel lack of right candidates for existing position. Not only high-level specialists, but also, for example,

Q: Dear Markian, as a shareholder of a company, which actively conducts business in Ukraine, I am interested in the following: as far as I know, there is a specific moratorium on the inspections to be conducted by state authorities. As the legislation changes rapidly in Ukraine, could you please inform me on the latest updates in this field? Kind Regards, Christian Indeed, on December 7, 2017 Parliament of Ukraine adopted the Law “On the State Budget of Ukraine on 2018”, which also amends the Law “On the Temporary Peculiarities of State Supervision (Control) Conducting in the Field of Economic Activity” (“the Law”). With the abovementioned Law were prohibited the planned inspections of the corresponding state authorities up till the end of 2018. At the same time this Law also stipulates the possibility to conduct extraordinary inspections by the state authorities only:

In order to expand EBA activity in Western Ukraine EBA executive office together with EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council members visited Ivano-Frankivsk. At the meeting with local business in Ivano-Frankivsk we found out the realities of doing business in the region and shared with the participants EBA tools and experience in joining forces in changing business environment. • on the basis of the claim of an individual; • on the basis of a written statement of the business entity on the conducting of a state supervision (control) measure; • on the basis of a court decision; • in case of an accident, death of the victim as a result of an accident; • in case of an event that has a significant negative impact, on the rights, legitimate interests, life and health of the person, protection of environment and ensuring the state's security; • to verify compliance with the requirements on elimination of violations, issued to the entity on the results of the previous state supervision (control). At the same time, it should be noted that in 2017 article 6 of the Law stipulated a list of controlling bodies which were not subject to a moratorium. From now on, this article is set out in a new wording, according to which the Law does not apply to relations arising in carrying out supervisory (control) measures by bodies list of which is established by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

Thus, from January 1, 2018, it is the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine the body that still has to decide which supervisory bodies will not be subject to a moratorium. As for the day of this Article such list was not identified. Such situation creates an unclear situation whether the moratorium on planned inspections is bounding for tax authorities or not, as those authorities is regulated with a special law – tax code of Ukraine and moreover – there exist publicly available source with the full list of entities which will be inspected by tax or other authorities this year.

Nevertheless, before the Government adopts the relevant resolution it is impossible to clearly identify exceptions to the moratorium, in which the state supervision (control) bodies will carry out inspections, despite the restrictions provided by the Law on the moratorium. 2011–2017

yearly IT sector overview released in January 2018 by the IT Ukraine Association highlights the robust performance of the country’s IT industry. Ukraine’s IT exports grew by 20% year-on-year in 2017 to reach a new record of USD 3.6 billion. This figure is projected to increase to USD 4.5 billion in 2018, with the forecast for 2025 currently standing at USD 8.4 billion, or around 4.65% of anticipated GDP.

This strong upward trend is also serving to bolster Ukraine’s state coffers, with UAH 16.7 billion (approximately USD 580 million) paid by IT companies to the Ukrainian budget in 2017. Ukraine’s IT industry placed third among the

country’s export revenue generators in 2016 behind metallurgy and the food industry. It will likely maintain this position once all data for the past twelve months is available. This newly released IT industry survey found that Ukraine currently has 116,000 IT specialists with an average monthly salary of USD 1,600, making IT one of the most lucrative professions in the country. Growing numbers of young Ukrainians are turning to IT as a career choice, with high salaries and transferrable skills making it an ideal choice for both school leavers and those looking to switch professions. The survey forecasts that by 2025, Ukraine will have 242,000 IT specialists,

or more than twice the current number. For now, it remains a male-dominated industry, with men accounting for 72% of all IT specialists. The average IT sector employee is currently 30 years old. There is no single regional focus within the sector and no indication that a geographically distinct Ukrainian Silicon Valley is likely to take shape. On the contrary, Ukraine has 16 IT clusters located in major cities and oblast centers throughout the country. Unsurprisingly, the current leader in terms of the number of specialists it boasts is the capital city Kyiv. Dnipro occupies the number two position, followed by Lviv and Kharkiv, with Odesa in fifth place.

Все більше молодих українців знаходять себе в галузі ІТ, з високими зарплатами та універсальними навичками, що робить її ідеальним вибором для випускників шкіл і тих, хто хоче змінювати професії. Дослідження передбачає, що до 2025 року в Україні буде понад 242 000 спеціалістів з інформаційних технологій, що більше як удвічі ніж сьогодні. Поки що в ІТ індустрії переважають чоловіки, які займають бл. 72% всіх робочих місць. Середньому працівнику сектору інформаційних технологій зараз 30 років. В цьому секторі немає єдиного регіонального центру, і не схоже на те, що в найближчий час могла б виникнути українська Силіконова долина. Сьогодні в Україні є 16 ІТ кластерів, розташованих у великих містах та обласних центрах. І зовсім не дивно, що найбільше фахівців ІТ працюють у Києві, за ним іде Дніпро, далі – Львів та Харків, а Одеса – на п'ятому місці.

Lviv’s Athlete of the Month: Olena Stetskiv Stetskiv was awarded Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for January. A graduate of the Lviv State University of Physical Culture, she finished ninth at the 2012 Youth Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria and 26th at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. She has finished in the top 20 in a World Cup race twice, in Lake Placid, USA in 2016 and Whistler, Canada in 2017. Lviv Today wishes her and all of Ukraine’s athletes great success in Korea!

Lviv athletes at 2018 Winter Olympics The Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre’s ornate Mirrors Hall played host on 31 January to the official ceremony to send off local athletes to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Several experienced athletes will represent the city in Korea this year, including lugers Olena Stetskiv, Olena Shkhumova, Roman Zakharkiv, and Anton Dukach, and alpine skiing’s Olga Knysch. The festive ceremony was attended by Lviv Oblast State Administration Head Oleh Synyutka, city officials, and sports fans. The ceremony also saw athletes model the official uniform of the 2018 Ukrainian Olympic team.

Львівські спортсмени на зимовій Олімпіаді-2018 У дзеркальній залі львівського оперного театру 31 січня відбулася офіційна церемонія проводів наших спортсменів на зимові Олімпійські ігри 2018 року в Пхьончхані, Південна Корея. Цього року Львів посилає на змагання досвідчених спортсменів, у тому числі представників санного спорту Олену Стецьків, Олену Шхумову, Романа Захарківа та Антона Дукача, а також гірськолижницю Ольгу Книш. В урочистій церемонії взяли участь, зокрема, Олег Синютка, голова Львівської обласної державної адміністрації, міські чиновники та любителі спорту. В рамках церемонії спортсмени представили офіційну форму української команди на Олімпійських іграх.

Випускниця Львівського державного університету фізичної культури Олена Стецьків верше виступила на зимовій молодіжній олімпіаді 2012 року в Інсбруку, де зайняла 9 місце. Олена представляла Україну на Зимовій Олімпіаді 2014 року у Сочі, де посіла 26 місце. Станом на січень 2018 року її найкращі досягнення – це 20 місце на чемпіонаті світу з санного спорту 2016 року у Лейк-Плейсіді, США, і також 20 місце у м. Уістлер, Канада в 2017. Олена Стецьків була визнана спортсменкою Львівщини у січні цього року. Lviv Today вітає Олену та бажає вдало виступити у Кореї!

Skating: Lviv Trophy 2018 Championship The skating rink in Novoyavorivsk was home for the Lviv Region Open Figure Skating Championship “Lviv Trophy-2018” during the January 27–28 weekend. Over 300 of the country’s finest figure skaters from across Ukraine’s 14 regions competed with athletes from Moldova and Belarus to claim the prestigious prizes. Skaters from a number of different age categories competed in two groups: group “A” (professionals) – men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pairs, and ice sport dancing and group “B” (amateurs) – men’s singles, ladies’ singles. As competitions main judge came Tamara Tsymbal from Dnipro. The Lviv regional figure skating school is located in Novoyavorivsk and is open for children aged 3 to 15.

Фігурне катання: Чемпіонат Lviv Trophy-2018 На Льодовій арені у Новояворівську 27–28 січня відбувся відкритий чемпіонат Львівської області з фігурного катання на ковзанах серед юнаків та дівчат “Lviv Trophy-2018”. Понад 300 найкращих фігуристів з 14 регіонів України та команди зарубіжних гостей з Білорусі й Молдови змагалися за престижні нагороди. Фігуристи різних вікових категорій виступали в двох категоріях: група “А” (діючі спортсмени) – одиночне катання, спортивні танці на льоду, спортивні пари та група “B” (аматорський клас) – одиночне катання. Головним суддєю змагань була Тамара Цимбал (м. Дніпро). Львівська обласна школа фігурного катання має свою базу в Новояворівську і відкрита для дітей віком від 3 до 15 років.

Climbing: Age of Volumes 2018 bouldering festival Lviv is a city with a long and storied tradition of mountaineering and climbing, which is why the Age of Volumes 2018 bouldering festival came to town on 9–10 February. One of the largest climbing activities in the region, the event took place at Lviv’s oldest and most difficult climbing wall at the local ‘Extreme’ club (40 Lazarenka St.). Bouldering is a young and entertaining form of climbing. In Lviv, it has become more accessible to people looking to improve their health and strength. Not only does climbing require the use of all your body’s muscle groups, but it also forces one to think and calculate on the fly, teaches one to make mistakes, and to reach for the peaks – it’s a great way to improve your leadership capabilities! This year’s event attracted over 150 amateur and professional participants from across Ukraine and even abroad.

Скелелазіння: Фестиваль боулдерингу Age of Volumes 2018 Львів має давні традиції альпінізму та скелелазіння, і саме в нашому місті 9–10 лютого відбувся фестиваль боулдерингу під назвою Age of Volumes 2018, один з найбільших альпіністських заходів у регіоні. Змагання проходили на найстарішій і, мабуть, найважчій скельній стіні Львова у клубі "Екстрім" по вул. Лазаренка, 40. Боулдерінг – це досить молодий і надзвичайно видовищний вид сходження. У Львові цей вид спорту стає все більш доступним для широкого кола людей, які хочуть стати здоровішими й сильнішими – як фізично, так і психічно. Скелелазіння зазвичай включає не тільки всі групи м'язів тіла, але також дає змогу мислити наперед і розрахувати кожен наступний крок, вчить як правильно помилятись і все ж досягати вершини, тим самим сприяючи лідерству особистості. Цього року у фестивалі взяли участь понад 150 спортсменів з усієї України та навіть з деяких зарубіжних країн, які змагалися у категоріях професіоналів і любителів.
