VivaLife's plans for an over 50s residential lifestyle village at Kyneton have come to a halt following rejection at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The proposal was to develop 12.37 hectares of Rural Living land at Edgecombe Road for 172 independent living units with associated communal facilities.

Plans saw opposition from both community and council for inconsistency with planning policies, inappropriate

format and character, and last week VCAT ruled in their favour.

"In essence, while we accept there is a need for additional residential development in the region and Kyneton, and some of this need will be for people aged over 50, this need does not outweigh the extensive and significant township level strategic planning for Kyneton," the VCAT members said.

"To approve this proposal outside the recognised and established ‘protected settlement boundary’ and ‘township

boundary’ would not be an acceptable or orderly planning outcome."

The application landed at VCAT following Macedon Ranges Shire Council's failure to determine within the prescribed timeframe.

Plans show the development was for part of the land at 106 Edgecombe Road and 3 Baynton Road and would be completed in six to seven stages. It is nearby land being developed for housing, Bunnings, McDonalds and a service station.

MRSC submitted to the hearing it would have rejected VivaLife's proposal, stating the site was not in a location that strategically supports a residential village, and that the proposal will have long lasting adverse effects on the strategic vision for Kyneton.

Accessibility to the township and essential services from the proposed village was also a consideration in VCAT's ruling.

The VCAT members said "in many ways the site superficially appears attractive for the proposed use" but concluded it was not the right location for such a development.

"It is no accident that Kyneton has a clearly defined township boundary and broader protected settlement boundary," they said.

"In our view it would be a step too far, and not an acceptable planning outcome, to approve an isolated and intensive residential development on this site, remote from the Kyneton town centre."

Community lobby group Keep Kyneton Country members were among the key objectors to the propoasl.

KKC team leader Karan Hayman said the group was "overjoyed with the result".

"Hopefully some precedents have now been set to protect our townships boundary and MRSC planning schemes," she said.

"Massive development is still planned for the south of Kyneton and our township boundaries extended, even though the infrastructure we need is not yet in place."

Daylesford crash driver granted bail The Mount Macedon driver charged following a fatal collision at a Daylesford pub beer garden last month, which killed five people, has been granted bail.

On Monday, detectives charged William Herbert Swale, 66, with five counts of culpable driving causing death, two counts of negligently causing serious injury and seven counts of reckless conduct endangering life.

The court heard Swale has been an insulin dependent type-1 diabetic since at least 1994, with conditions on his licence that required him to undergo medical assessments every two years.

Swale has been accused of ignoring nine alarms about his blood glucose in the hour before crashing his vehicle into the pub beer gardens. He was released on a $250,000 surety, after being found to be not an unacceptable risk to the community.

Emergency services were called to reports a BMW SUV mounted the kerb and struck a number of patrons on the front lawn area of a licensed premises on Vincent Street just after 6pm on November 5.

A 38-year-old Tarneit man and his 11-year-old son both died at the scene.

The man’s wife, a 36-year-old woman, and a second six-year-old son were injured and taken to hospital, and have since been released.

A 30-year-old Point Cook man and his partner, a 44-year-old Point Cook woman died at the scene, the woman’s nine-year-old daughter was taken to hospital but later died.

A 43-year-old Kyneton woman, a 38-year-old Cockatoo man and an 11-month-old baby boy were taken to hospital, and have all since been discharged.

Coliban Water will appeal its new Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant operating licence from the EPA at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The EPA had amended the licence to require a ratio of less than one part recycled water for every three parts river water (when making emergency releases from the plant to the Campaspe River), rejecting Coliban Water's request for a ratio of two parts recycled water to one part river water.

CW managing director Damian Wells said following technical and legal assessment of the new licence received from the EPA last week, and the water authority's ability to comply with these conditions, he believed it was in the best interest of customers to exercise the right to appeal at VCAT. “We submitted our Licence Amendment Application in May 2022 where we are proposing to ‘lock-in’ new environmental performance standards consistent with our new Environment and Sustainability Policy," Mr Wells said.

"We are long-running custodians of the Campaspe River water cycle and we stand behind the environmental credentials of our recent work at Kyneton WRP where we acknowledged historical non-compliance issues."

Mr Wells said Coliban Water, together with its recycled water partners, had invested more than $20 million at the site over the past three years, delivering a dramatic step-change in environmental performance including: – A 95 per cent reduction in phosphorus in river releases of highly treated water.

– A trebling of treated water storage.

– Construction of a 14-kilometre pipeline to supply recycled water for agricultural use.

Recipients were: Kyneton Basketball Association – $3000 for Victorian Junior Basketball League standard basketballs for the junior teams project.

Discovery Science and Technology Centre – $2309 for the Curious Kids in the Library project.

Gisborne Golf Club – $2059 for installation of nesting boxes in trees on the golf course.

Woodend RSL Sub-branch – $2000 for First Australians Flag project.

Riddells Creek Cool Changes – $1500 for the Riddells Creek Enviro Expo project.

Operation Roadwise

Police are pleading with motorists to take extra care on the roads during the high-risk Christmas period as Operation Roadwise begins.

The statewide road policing operation began on Friday and will run for an extra six days to cover the busy New Year period, with police providing highly visible enforcement on major arterial roads and highways.

Alcohol and drug testing will be a focus, with police intelligence showing there is an increase in the number of drivers recording low-range drink driving readings (0.05 – 0.069 BAC) in December.

Operation Roadwise will also see police ramp up enforcement around coastal areas and popular holiday hotspots across regional Victoria.

Operation Roadwise concludes at 23.59pm on Monday, January 1.

Keg for the Women’s Shed Shedshaker Brewing’s Keg for Good is back today with the Castlemaine Surrounds Women’s Shed being this month’s recipient.

The Women’s Shed was established to provide a safe and supportive space for women to learn handy repair and building skills.

Castlemaine Surrounds Women's Shed organiser Johanna Winchcomb said the group started in 2017 as a Facebook page to help empower women, especially single women, to become more self-reliant.

“Since then, it has grown into a going concern with more than 1000 members on the Facebook page, monthly workshops and the future establishment of a mobile workshop and tool library," Johanna said.

"We are auspiced by the Castlemaine Community House and have been holding successful monthly gatherings and workshops there for the last 12 months. However, we recently receive attained a $3000 grant from Mount Alexander Shire Council to help us create our 'Tradie Trailer'.

"We've had a trailer kindly donated, which has been sandblasted thanks to the team at Billman's Foundry and resprayed thanks to Parsons Motor and Body Shop.

"We aim to fit out the trailer and travel to members properties month to month and ramp up to more frequent gatherings as needed.

“The long-term goal remains to have our own shed one day, with all the tools we need to teach women the skills they want to learn in a safe and supportive space.

“We have had great support this year from a range of organisations and local businesses, which has been fantastic, and want to keep building on this support.”

Shedshaker Brewing director Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns said the Keg for Good initiative saw the Taproom put on a keg of beer and the money raised from those sales go to the nominated charity.

“For two nights, Tuesday December 19 and Wednesday December 20, all proceeds of sales of the nominated beer will go to help support the great work the Women’s Shed does,” Jacqueline said.

“Last month we raised $300 for Castlemaine United Cricket Club, who are doing great work with junior and women’s cricket."

The Keg for Good idea was inspired by the work of Bright Brewing, which runs a Community Keg once per month with proceeds going to nominated causes.

Queerthentic has openings for artists for an exhibition to be held in early 2024.

It is an initiative of Macedon Ranges Accessible Arts Inc. creating an environment of inclusion, amplifying the voices of LGBTIQA+and gender-diverse people and bringing pride to the Macedon Ranges.

Queerthentic will tell the personal histories of regional LGBTIQA+ and gender-diverse artists and share the influences and impact of queer history and culture on their lives.

A regional LGBTQIA+ art prize and exhibition, previously held under the name That’s so Gay in 2023, is part of Victoria's Pride, a joint venture of Midsumma and the Victorian Government and will run annually from mid-January to mid-February.

Macedon Ranges Accessible Arts Inc. is a grassroots volunteer-run not-for-profit incorporated organisation based in the Macedon Ranges and working throughout central Victoria.

MRAAI has been created to enhance the lives of marginalised community members through access to art in an accessible manner and to decrease the stigmatisation and discrimination faced by those community members.

The group emphatically believes that the power of art should be able to be seen by, and be created by, all people.

Co-op plans progress BBQ Chickens & Castlemaine Community Investment Co-operative's plans to purchase The Hub building are progressing.

The co-operative held an event at the Northern Arts Hotel on December 6 to update the community on their efforts.

Co-organiser Angus Gratton said about a dozen co-operative enthusiasts heard that a local real estate investment co-op could prevent investors extracting profit from the town.

"Together we can put important real estate assets such as The Hub building

into the hands of the community permanently, preserving the local services and businesses we value, while giving local investors a modest annual return," Angus said.

"This will keep wealth in our communities, instead of sending it off to the Cayman Islands!"

The co-operative submitted its proposed rules to Consumer Affairs Victoria for approval last month.

Organisers anticipate that a Formation Meeting will be held in early February

to complete the creation the new local co-op.

"Once formed, the co-operative plans to proceed towards its immediate goal of purchasing The Hub Castlemaine in order to manage and safeguard it on behalf of the community, and retain the tenants who call the building home, many of whom have a sustainability, community health or wellbeing focus and the community garden," Angus said.

The Compost Conversation – with Joel Meadows

If you want to start hot composting – getting your compost to heat up to at least 55o Celsius for at least three days – you are going to need some way to find out what temperature your compost is getting up to.

The simplest temperature check is to stick a metal rod into the middle of our compost pile. After a few minutes the rod will have stabilised at the temperature of the pile’s core. Quickly draw out the rod and cautiously touch the end, if it is 55o C or under you should just be able to hold your hand on the rod, over 55o C and it will be too hot to hold, so be careful, composts can get over 70o C. The rod will rapidly cool, so take your observational reading quickly.

If you start making hot compost regularly, perhaps using a continuous hot compost system – like our amazing team of YIMBY composters – you are going to want to get your hands on a dedicated compost thermometer. A good thermometer will have a decent length probe (at least 300mm – so you can get down into the pile’s heating heart – but longer is better) and a clear and accurate dial.

As with most purchases in life, we can spend a lot of money on a well-made, dedicated tool or we can buy cheap, flimsy options too. My preference is always to go for things that are made to last, in the long run and we end up generating less waste, using less energy and often save money too.

At YIMBY we have found the Backyard thermometers from the Reotemp company (available for under $100 – pictured) to be a good balance of well-made, but not too pricey. We prefer if the dial reads in Celsius only, as this reduces confusion.

These compost thermometers have bi-metal tips that move the needle on the dial.

This means it is reading the temperature only at the tip, so don’t worry if the rest of the probe’s shaft is sticking out of the pile, we can take an accurate reading at any depth.

A little warning; taking the temperature of your hot, or heating pile can become quite addictive, and you might find you are ducking out to the garden a couple of times a day to see what is going on down below the mulch layer of your pile.

Paying closer attention to our compost makes us better composters. Couple this with keeping good records of temperatures, ingredients and processes and we are well on the way to becoming master composters.

If you are hot composting consistently, and you have the temperature records to prove it to yourself, you can feel comfortable putting almost any organic ingredient in your pile; weed seeds, couch and kikuyu grasses, meat scraps, bones etc. knowing that the microbial heat will kill off the pathogens and stop rats and mice being able to get to any tasty scraps.

Five local community organisations and one national charity will share in more than $28,000 as a result of the success of the most recent Garden Lovers Fair held at Bolobek in Macedon in October this year.

The event has grown significantly over the past 10 years to become one of the largest events in regional Victoria and has been praised for its organisation, presentation and visitor experience.

Fair host Brigid Robertson said more than 50 high-quality and specialist stallholders and more than 3200 Victorian and interstate visitors attended this year’s fair, which boasted Maggie Beer as a keynote speaker.

Shannon’s S hannon’s journey journey c continues ontinues Bill West

Victorian AFLW legend and Gisborne local, Shannon McFerran, is preparing for yet another season to follow on from her best and fairest wins in the Bulldog senior women’s football team in 2022 and 2023.

Gisborne women’s senior team has been in pre-season training for several weeks, and during the just completed AFLW’s eighth season, Shannon proudly joined with 20 other legacy AFLW players in the ‘Keep Walking Boldly’ campaign.

In a partnership with major sponsor Johnnie Walker, they created five individually handcrafted football boots to embody the spirit of progress.

These were produced from boots previously worn by Shannon and the other legacy players, and gifted to outstanding young athletes in the league.

The special boots symbolised the bold steps that have been and continue to be taken from one generation to the next.

With AFL Women’s Football general manager, Nicole Livingstone, the specially created boots were presented to rising stars Ashleigh Brazill (Collingwood), Ally Anderson (Brisbane Lions), Chloe Dalton (GWS Giants) and Emily Bates (Hawthorn).

Shannon McFerran’s prolonged football involvement story is more than inspirational, and she is looking forward to mak-

ing a further positive contribution in her role with Gisborne this season.

From pushing for her right to play footy, to battling a brain tumour, Shannon has overcome adversity at almost every turn.

She eventually earned a place in the top 100 Australian Sportswomen list.

A secondary school teacher, Shannon has helped countless numbers both on and off the field over the years.

She fell in love with football at a very early age, enjoying kick to kick with her older brother, and going along to his training with the under 9s at St Albans.

Her mum said she may as well play such was her interest; this ended at the age of 12 when girls could not play in boys’ teams.

So Shannon became an umpire, both boundary and field, and as a 17-year-old she located a women’s league to join; being “too small” was overcome by skill, ability and enthusiasm.

She went on to play more than 200 games for St Albans, and represented Victoria 12 times.

Shannon was held in high regard on and off the field, and was All Australian Women’s captain on two occasions.

In June 2007, Shannon was one of two women to play in the E.J. Whitten Legends match.

She also played in the international game against Ireland, and finished up winning the Victorian

the Under 11s premiership side last season.

Shannon estimates she has taken part in about 300 games as a player and umpire over the years, with more to come.

Gisborne Football Netball Club club leaders are very pleased to have someone of Shannon’s calibre in the ranks as the 2024 season approaches.

Louis takes on Big Brother Angela Crawford

Kyneton local Louis Phillips made it down to the final three contestants on the latest series of Big Brother Australia.

The 25-year-old spent 28 days inside the house and described the experience as "certainly interesting!"

"Not much can prepare you for it," he told the Express.

"The best thing that prepared me for it was share house living."

Louis said the housemates were constantly hungry and tired.

"So you throw that into a house and you've got a good cocktail for reality TV!" he said.

"It started off as one big happy family and then reality struck when the first eviction came up, and from there everyone realised it became a game of alliances.

"I was known as the strategic one. I figured the more people I had on my side, the better it would be when it came to voting."

Louis said there were plenty of big characters in the house too.

Louis now works in social media and is building a fitness app called INTVL. "It's a running coach for your pocket and it will be released early next year," he said.

"With the cost of living increasing, often the first things to be made redundant are personal trainers and gym memberships.

"But this gives you those for the price of a coffee a week!"

Storm activity last Tuesday afternoon caused a large power outage across parts of Kyneton and surrounding areas.

At about 4pm, 1533 properties lost power.

Powercor crews patrolled the lines and were able to restore customers periodically.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has rejected an 18-lot development at Wedge Street, Kyneton.

Councillors felt the application would not respect existing neighbourhood character and result in a subdivision layout that does not respect the local urban structure and subdivision pattern.

They said it did not respond to the local outlined neighbourhood character values particularly by a lack of lots in excess of 2000 square metres.

Potential impacts of flooding, disjointed road network, lack of open space and appropriate allowance for vehicular/pedestrian movement over the Wedge Street Bridge were also key in determining a refusal.

The application attracted 30 submissions and 10 residents spoke against the plan at the council’s planning delegated committee meeting earlier this year.

Rebecca Oakley Warren Growing up in Kyneton, Matt always knew he would be destined to work in a hands-on profession and has been a landscaper for the last seven years in the Castlemaine region.

Through hard work, Matt saved up to buy a block of land in Campbell’s Creek.

Wake Up Christmas lunch

Wake Up runs fortnightly on a Thursday from 11.30am to 2.30pm at Mechanics Lane Castlemaine.

The Wake Up Christmas lunch for people experiencing homelessness and those in need will be at Mechanics Lane in Castlemaine this Thursday.

Members of the Church of Christ decided it was time to 'wake up' and help the homeless and those in need and have been running fortnightly lunches in Mechanics Lane.

Neville Cox from the church said there were more and more people experiencing

homelessness, including adolescents, and it was time to 'wake up' and do something about it.

"We can't just sit around and do nothing," Neville said.

"We're just a bunch of old blokes that want to help people. There's no bible bashing, we just want to provide people a small amount of dignity, with people they can trust to listen to them.

"We encourage others to get involved with helping the homeless, to give up a little bit of time and do something that helps people feel seen," he said.

To celebrate Christmas, the team is hosting a Christmas lunch complete with Christmas carols, a delicious roast meal and dessert so make sure to head down and check it out on Thursday December 21, from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

Victorians are being asked to give the gift of hope this holiday season by registering to be an organ and tissue donor.

As 2023 draws to a close, DonateLife Victoria is issuing a final call for people to register as an organ and tissue donor, giving hope to those currently waiting for an organ or tissue transplant.

There are currently 1800 Australians on the waiting list for an organ transplant, with a further 14,000 undergoing dialysis who could benefit from a kidney transplant.

Dr Rohit D’Costa, state medical director at DonateLife Victoria said one organ donor could save the lives of up to seven people and help many more through eye and tissue donation.

"For someone who is seriously ill, an organ or tissue transplant can mean the difference between life or death. It is truly the greatest gift," Dr D’Costa said.

With many people seeing their family during this time, Dr D’Costa said it was an ideal time to let your family know that you supported organ and tissue donation.

“Eight out of 10 families say yes to donation if their family member has registered to be a donor. When the family is uncertain about whether their family member wanted to be a donor, only four out of 10 families agree to donation. It makes it harder for families to decide if they don’t know what their family member wanted,” Dr D’Costa said Anyone over the age of 16 can register as an organ and tissue donor regardless of their medical history, lifestyle, religion, or age.

After 500 days of negotiation between the EPA and Coliban Water, the licence renewal for the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant will be challenged at VCAT. The issue that will be contested is the dilution ratio.

Let me correct the article on the licence renewal from last week’s paper. CW was asking for a dilution ratio of two parts effluent to one part river flow not the other way round.

The EPA recently issued an amended operating licence for the release of only tertiary treated water with a minimum dilution of three parts river flow to one part effluent.

An emergency release of water is when the ponds are at breaking point. CW has to apply to the EPA for an approval under section 30A of the Environment Protection Act. The wastewater in the ponds is low quality and, it was a release of this water in 2019 that led to CW being found guilty of pollution and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.

CW loves to tell the story of how it has spent $20m on the KWRP, but they are aware of its shortfalls. In CW Price Submission 2023/2028 Report they acknowledge that if their licence application does not go their way, then considerably more capital expenditure will be required at the KWRP. Surely this an admission that its spend is inadequate and explains why the company is so intent on challenging the EPA at VCAT so it can obtain a regulatory framework to pollute.

This is totally unacceptable from a societal and environmental perspective.

CW needs to accept the new operating licence and acknowledge that the KWRP is at capacity. No further development that impacts on the KWRP can occur until such a time that only low pathogen tertiary treated water (A Class) is released from their facility to the river and that they meet a minimum of three-to-one dilution.

The new operating licence is much better than the last, but we have concerns about the monitoring program and our ability to have access to this data. We have totally lost confidence in CW especially now they are challenging the umpire’s decision at VCAT. If CW is successful at VCAT it will set an ugly precedent for all other authorities to emulate.

A proposal for the reopening of the old Romsey Hotel has been made by the Romsey Football Netball Club, which will include the installation of 50 poker machines to attract local customers to the venue.

If successful, this will be one of only 13 clubs to hold a gaming license in Victoria.

Given that the town resoundingly rejected a similar proposal 15 years ago, it is unbelievable that the community once again has to fight it.

The primary purpose of the submission according to the club is to meet community needs, and to distribute profits to be shared by them according to decisions made by their own Board of Trustees.

What is not made clear is that the social costs of gambling in Victoria alone are estimated at $7 billion annually, with almost half of this as a result of poker machine usage.

Will the Trustees be taking care of them?

The damage caused by gambling not only causes financial hardship to the gambler, but adversely affects the mental health of themselves and their families. For every one person affected, six others will also experience problems.

Unbelievably, the submission is being made while other major sporting clubs have now recognised the dangers of raising funds from gambling, and have already removed poker machines from their social venues, including the AFL’s Collingwood, Geelong and Melbourne.

Gambling venues do not employ many people (about three people per $1 million turnover compared to more than 20 for food and entertainment) and do not contribute to the health and wellbeing of the local community. And the estimated $2 million to $5 million extracted from the local economy will hit other businesses already struggling from the cost-of-living crisis. Romsey residents cannot afford a gaming venue.

Hotels are supposed to be places where communities can gather for conversation, support, a congenial atmosphere and for enjoying a fine meal. They should be the heart of the town, and not a financial drain on it. And they do not need poker machines to be profitable as five others in the same vicinity have already demonstrated.

Residents who wish to object to the proposal should contact the Macedon Ranges Shire Council to voice their concerns.

Halt the destruction Ian Braybrook, Castlemaine I am a member of the Friends of Wattle Gully Mine group but I am not authorised to speak on their behalf. However, I believe my thoughts expressed herewith will coincide with most members' ideas.

A person asked me recently "What is it you want?"

My answer is simple. I want to see urgent action to halt the destruction, vandalism and theft that abounds at Wattle Gully and I want restoration and preservation work to get under way promptly. A good start would be several CCTV cameras linked to a responsible post, e.g. the police or Parks office.

The Wattle Gully Mine is important to the area’s history and heritage as well as a very valuable part of the existing park.

It must be a considerable contribution in presenting the case for World Heritage Listing currently being sought. It is a site we should fiercely protect.

There is a need to clarify exactly who is responsible for the mine site. Nobody wants to claim it. Is it the state government, Parks Victoria, Mount Alexander Shire or the mining companies who lease or have leased the site? Perhaps all share in it but there is a suggestion that the buck stops with Parks Victoria. In view of the potential benefit to the shire, Mount Alexander Shire Council ought to take an active interest.

We, the people, also have a responsibility to insist on the salvation and preservation of the mine; to do what we can. For the sake of future generations and our history and heritage.

Shame on those in appropriate positions who have stood aside and watched this destruction take place.

They donated the items themselves, put together the hampers and wrote personal cards, before dropping them off at Bupa where they were distributed by the centre's Lifestyle team.

Bupa lifestyle and wellbeing coordinator, Lauren Monaghan, said the residents (and staff) were so overwhelmed and thankful for their generosity, some were moved to tears.

"It absolutely made their day and we feel very blessed to have such wonderful, thoughtful students in our community, put something so special together for our residents," Ms Monaghan said.

An Australian take on Greece’s favourite tipple, ouzo, has secured five industry awards in the past year for Romsey's Macedon Distillery.

Family tradition, recipes passed down for decades and years of perfecting flavours have played a huge part in the distillery's success for founders Jim Koutsougeras and Eleni Lambropoulos.

The launch of their two varieties: an original and a triple-distilled limited edition, has seen the distillery honoured with several awards over the past year including gold in both the 2023 Royal Australian Distilled Spirits Awards and 2023 Tasting Australia Spirit Awards – Alternative Spirits.

It was also named Best in Class at the 2023 Tasting Australia Spirit Awards – Alternative Spirits in October and claimed a medallion for Best Other Spirit at the 2023 Royal Australian Distilled Spirits Awards.

The distillery was awarded silver at the 2023 Melbourne Royal Australian Distilled Spirits Awards – Ouzo (Alternative Spirit).

"We couldn't be more delighted with the recognition we have received from these industry awards. It’s yet another stride in the right direction. We're ecstatic to add to our growing collection of awards!" Jim said.

"It's great to know that all our hard

work has paid off. We're proud of the spirits we produce at Macedon Distillery, and it's exciting to be recognised by a group of leading industry experts."

Their relentless focus on flavour is inspired by the joy that Jim and Eleni have experienced learning at the feet of their Greek fathers who constantly worked to create the best home brews.

Over the past three years, Jim has worked tirelessly to create his own version of this Greek iconic spirit, based on those family recipes that have been passed through generations.

His relentless focus on flavour became an obsession during covid lockdowns, as his tinkering took on a new direction.

Early 2022 saw the sad loss of Jim’s father and Jim decided to put all this effort into the business, quitting his day job in the corporate world.

The origins of home-made ouzo trace back to 14th century Greece, where first batch is said to have been made by monks on Mount Athos.

Largely grape-based, it is derived from what is left of the grapes, when all the juice has been squeezed out of them. The juice is then distilled with anise seed and individually crafted with exquisite individual flavours like botanicals, cloves, fennel and cardamon.

Maurice James Riches Passed away peacefully at Castlemaine Hospital in the early hours on the 15/12/23 aged 72.

He loved deeply and was beloved by many - he will be missed.

The family wish to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff and Dr Tom for their immeasurable contributions in seeing to Maurie’s care throughout.

Winning streak continues

An easy win at Kyneton by Bolshoi Princess on Thursday continued the recent winning streak by Macedon Ranges trainer Liam Howley.

Ridden by Jarrod Fry, the four-year-old mare was sent out second favourite at $4.

After being third for much of the 1856m journey in the Goldfields Maiden, Bolshoi surged clear in the straight to win by 3.3 lengths from favourite Henry Robin.

“We love winning at our home track,” Howley said after the race.

He predicted more wins are in store for “this great group of owners”.

The victory made it six wins from the last 24 starters for Liam Howley Racing.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club’s annual Christmas Family Race Day was favoured by fine weather, and plenty of pre-Christmas celebrations took place.

It was a special day for former jockey Naomi Bourke, who saddled up her first runner as a trainer, and was rewarded when $26 chance The Yachtsman, ridden

by Linda Bourke, led throughout to win by five lengths. The local racing club is now preparing for its annual New Year’s Day meeting at Hanging Rock.

Triples well attended

Congratulations to all for the success of Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club’s Annual Triples Tournament, held on the last Sunday of November.

Twenty-four teams travelled from near and far to compete on the day, with the winners coming over from the Grampians Petanque Club and the runners up from St Kilda and Ballarat clubs.

The club had great support from many local businesses and wineries in Woodend who contributed to prizes and raffle.

A big ‘thank you’ to all.

The club’s three new pistes, put together for the occasion, turned out to be quite a challenge for some, but that’s the way it goes in petanque!

“As the season progresses and the weather warms up we are playing more petanque and each weekend there is always a tournament to be found around the state somewhere,” said club president, Louise Potter.

“We continue to gather on a Monday afternoon at the Old Racecourse in Woodend.

“As we move into summer we plan to have nibbles and a glass of wine after play, on the Mondays, to discuss all that is petanque!

“Our Thursday evenings at Hanging Rock also continue to be a success as members gather there for three games of petanque and a barbecue, after play, prepared by members from the roster.

“On the first Thursday of the month, we are having a ‘Teams Night’, where

members choose their own team, rather than out of the hat, as on other Thursday evenings.

“Last weekend was a wet one, but it didn’t deter a group of intrepid players from travelling to Smythesdale for their Open Triples Tournament. All our members played well despite the constant drizzle!

The rain came down in buckets and soaked the players to the skin, but they played on to finish their games!

“Finally, last night we had our Annual Christmas Party at Hanging Rock. It was a beautiful evening and two games were played before we had a delicious dinner, catered by Harvest and Soul from Macedon and prepared by members, Shirley, Jill and Ruth.

“Thank you to all for the decorations and set up of our shelter.

“Last night we farewelled our treasurer Carol Richards and her husband Graham, who are moving to Wonga Park in the new year to be closer to family.

“Thank you Carol for your unending support and hard work for the Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club, over the last 13 years.

“The club will not have a treasurer in 2024.

“We are appealing to all members and members to be, to join us at the WHRPC to find a new treasurer and take us into the future.

“Merry Christmas to all our members and their families and a Happy New Year.”

Surely Kyneton Golf is destined to defend its division one Highlands bowls premiership this season.

On Saturday, Golf won by ONE SHOT for the second time in three matches.

This time it was on the tricky Broadford green, where some highly rated sides have trouble.

Two of Golf’s three fours were beaten, and the remarkable 21-5 margin by the quartet of Brendan Plowman, Steve Taylor, Wayne Turner and Toby Barker came at the right time.

Trailing by two shots at home to Kilmore, Lancefield produced a very strong second half to win by 26 shots; Jeff Holmes and Dave Safstrom had good margins and this was the Tigers’ best effort for the season.

Ladder-leader Kyneton won by nine shots at Trentham, with Tim Cook securing a big scalp by downing Kyneton’s Anthony Mathison by eight.

In the remaining match, second-placed Romsey secured a clean sweep against fifth-placed Gisborne, with Matt Brundell having 20 shots to spare.

NEW CHAMPION Lancefield Bowling Club has a new name on its championship board of honour, with Peter White defeating the muchimproved Dan Hollywood in a close final on Sunday.

In the women’s final, Ann Shipcott made it two in a row by accounting for Greta James.

White, rated one of the best leaders in Highlands, began his bowls at the age of 27 with the strong Sunbury club in 1986.

He later spent five years with Gisborne Bowling Club, winning the club championship and Central Highlands Champion of Champions.

White moved to live in Lancefield three years ago and has been a fine addition to the club; he works at Glen Erin Winery.

Sunday’s final was close for some considerable time, before White opened up a lead of six shots; Hollywood fought back to lock scores at 22-22, before White won the final two ends.

Hollywood had a big victory when he eliminated the highly rated Jeff Holmes 25-21, and in the morning semi-final he accounted for Peter Shannon 25-14.

White won his semi-final against Steve Climas 25-6.

In the women’s final, Shipcott prevailed 25-7 against first-time finalist Greta James.

CASTLEMAINE Two C-graders stole the limelight in Saturday’s stableford, returning to top two scores for the day.

A stellar 43 points from Nic Simpson (25) was impressive, and Mick Kehoe (18) came in second overall with a noteworthy 40 points.

In A-grade, Darren Gervasoni (9) had 39 points, and Laurie Harding (14) was the B-grade victor with the same tally.

Kerin Lourey (15) had 38 points, highlighted by and eagle on the 2nd hole.

Kehoe and Gervasoni took out the NTPs. GISBORNE In the final of the L. and W. Brady Mixed knockout event, Andrew and Moon Gordon took on Jason and Dao Lock.

Moon eclipsed her opponents by sinking a 30-footer on the 15th to take the lead.

This was the turning point, where the Locks were finally broken.

The Flash Gordon pair went on to close out the match on the 17th hole.

But it’s hard to keep international golfing and cricket star Jason Lock down for long.

He bounced back on Saturday, combining with Brendan Larkins to take out the 36-hole W.J. McGregor Foursome gross board event.

Scott Tutton and Shauldon Huisman clinched the 36-hole handicap event, and Andrew Buttigieg won the 18-hole Tom Stotten Cup. KYNETON Pat Clohesy has chalked up a decisive victory in Kyneton’s midweek stableford championship.

After a great 40 points in the first round, Clohesy was determined to keep up the pressure last Wednesday and came home with 35 points for a 36-hole tally of 75 to earn the trophy.

Neil Watts was runner-up with a commendable 71 points.

Terry Kot (15) was the daily winner with 40 points, one clear of Anthony DiBella.

Reliable Teaote Davies (22) led in the ladies with 40 points, an NTPs went to Clohesy, Peter Kewniuk, Luke Cameron and Joan Gibbs.

The ‘Next Painting Service’ stableford on Saturday saw heaps of birdies and eagles with the two ‘new’ par 3s.

Section 1 (0-15 handicap went to Mat Hodgkiss (5) with 41 points from Peter Walsh (15) on 40.

Braeden Cottingham (31) excelled in section 2 with 42 points, and in-form Kylie Munro (15) was the ladies winner with 37.

LANCEFIELD Kaylene Cruise has capped off a great season by winning her first-ever Lancefield Golf Club championship.

In the third and final round she cruised to victory with her best round in the 54-hole championship, winning by 15 strokes from Di Rohde.

She also took out the 54-hole Belva Blomberg Handicap trophy by six strokes from Rohde.

After being runner-up in the championship on several occasions, Cruise was delighted to finally get her name on the championship trophy.

Her resounding victory came with rounds of 104,104, 93 – 301.

Cruise went home with two exquisite silver trophies to add to her recent Medal of Medallists success. Well done, Kaylene!

Carole Mee took out the B-grade championship, finishing five strokes clear of Florence Meyer.

Other significant winners were: Player of the Year – Anne Robinson.

Most improved – Marlane Pattinson.

Eclective – Florence Meyer.

Least putts – Di Rohde.

Gobblers – Lyn Murchison.

Next year is looking very positive with a good number of new ladies expected to join the club following the recent ‘Give Golf a Go’ training sessions.

Ken Murchison was runner-up with 27, 37, 40 – 107.

The 18-hole winner on Saturday was Dale Schmitt (18) with 42 points, from Ross Farrar (14) with 41, and Murhcison (24) with 40 on a countback from Peter McGill and Todd Lambert.

MOUNT MACEDON The Ranges Medical December monthly medal event on Saturday saw 20 per cent of the field achieving handicap or better.

The medal contest produced a tie between Isaac Golden (B-grade) and Peter Palmer (C-grade) with nett 63s.

Patrick Doyle snared A-grade with a nett 66 which included an eagle on the ninth.

Doyle, Mike Smitheram and W. Alrus were NTPs, with Smitheram having the least putts.

Late in last Wednesday’s par round Thor, the Norse god of thunder, paid a visit and the ‘lightning safety protocol’ was enacted, with the competition abandoned.

Smitheram, Ken and Brbie Freestone, and Joel Scanlon returned birdies, and Walrus eagled the 17th.

Congratulations to club sponsor Gisborne Foodworks on being crowned Supermarket of the Year, and to Brayden Rodgers – Manager of the Year.

ROMSEY After 22 holes without a result the previous weekend, the John Laing Shield final resumed on Saturday and was immediately decided on the 23rd hole, with Davey Kenney (6) defeating Mal Mottram (0).

Mottram went on to produce his top form and take out the day’s stroke event with a fine 76-8-68, from Andrew Clement 80-1070, Mitchell Atlas 78-6-72 and Mick Squire 79-7-72.

Mottram, Squire and Steve Williams were the NTPs. Dressed in something Christmassy, last Wednesday’s participants played ‘North Pole Ruleds’ drawn up by captain Darlene Baker.

The best gross score of 35 came from the team of Beryl Cole, Hayley Donovan and Leesa Butterworth.

Runners-up on 38 were Jenney Hartley and Kath Jekabsons, with Wendy Gosden and Lorraine third on 40.

TRENTHAM There were some very good scores among the 69 participants in Saturday’s par event.

The best was plus 5 from C-grade and overall winner Ross Green (25).

Simon Ovenden (2) finished +2 in Agrade, and Lincoln Porter (16) was +4 in B-grade.

Sally Kirkright had a nett 67 in the first round of the women’s Summer Cup, six clear of Terri O’Callaghan.

WOODEND There was some tremendous scoring in Saturday’s monthly medal at Royal Woodend.

The trio of Matt Long (11), Trevor ’Pup’ Bowen (14) and Tony Gepp (14) all returned nett 63s.

They will contest a play-off next month for the medal.

The Christmas break-up for the midweek players last week was enjoyable.

The stableford winner was Maurie Kelly – aka Kelly – had 38 points from a handicap of 17, with Fergus Nevin (12) runner-up on 37.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Barney Hearnden (Woodend) has won Dalhousie District Golf Association’s Player of the Year for 2023.

Runner-up was Wayne Kupke (Alexandra) with Cameron Pascoe (Hidden Valley) and Graeme Hogg (Broadford) equal third.

Pascoe was the winner of the coveted I.P. Mein Trophy for senior players.

Massive weekend in CDCA

Castlemaine District Cricket Association wound up the year with a bumper round of local cricket action last weekend.

The local matches kicked off Friday evening with Women's cricket contests at the Camp Reserve, Barkers Creek and Newstead.

On Saturday A Grade and A Reserve cricketers contested a one day fixture in round eight after the previous week's competition was washed out. B Grade played a one day game in round nine and C Grade (Under 16) played a one day fixture after their round six two day clash was washed out.

Highlights of the round were Heathcote B Grade batsman Tim Gleeson's stagger-

ing 176 not out against Muckleford and North Castlemaine A Reserve bowler Ben Holden's 5-25 with the ball against Barkers Creek. Results were: A Grade Maiden Gully Lions 6-164 defeated Newstead 10-91.

Muckleford 9-129 lost to Guildford 2-186.

Barkers Creek 10-173 defeated Castlemaine United 10-154.

A Reserve Castlemaine United 10-151 lost to Muckleford 7-152.

Tennis premiers

Woodend teams made a big impact in Macedon Ranges Tennis Association’s Open Thursday night competition finals.

The finals matches were played across four sections.

Section 1 resulted in Woodend defeating Gisborne; Romsey was too strong for Lancefield in Section 2.

Woodend Funky Squad defeated Wood-

end Wombats in the Sectio 3 final, and Woodend defeated Riddells Creek in Section 4.

The competition returns in February for the Spring season.

Any tennis enthusiasts wishing to participate should contact their local club(s).

The MRTA also runs competitions for Wednesday night women, Saturday Juniors, and Saturday afternoon Open.

Kyneton’s young Charlie Thompson boxed in Canberra last week, one day after his 14th birthday. He had just recently moved up in the weight divisions from 34kg to 36kg.

Charlie’s opponent from Sydney had recently defeated the national champion at the Golden Gloves Tournament in Queensland and was awarded 'Boxer of the Tournament'.

Charlie’s fight against this lad last week was fought at a fast pace with Charlie landing cleaner and heavier punches. The judges awarded Charlie a well-deserved victory on points.

This win is a good indicator at where Charlie is at as he continues to work hard towards the state and national titles next year.

Charlie comes from a proud sporting family. His father, Matthew, won the State Bantamweight title in the Victorian Amateur Boxing League in 1988.

Charlie’s grandfather, Ian Thompson, played for North Melbourne in the then VFL in the 1960s, while his great, great, great grandfather, William Jackson Millard, won the Stawell Gift in 1878.

Charlie is excited at what the future holds for him. This promising young boxer whose aim is to become a champion boxer, trains hard and is dedicated to achieving even greater success in the years to come.

Kelly slams 136 Bill West

A blistering 136 from 113 balls by belligerent Gisborne opener Warren Kelly set the tone for big Christmas celebrations at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday evening.

Kelly dispatched the Diggers Rest/Bulla bowlers to all parts of Gardiner Reserve, with the Dragons rattling up a formidable 8/290 c.c.

McIntyre Cup and Johnstone Cup two-day matches which had been washed out the previous Saturday became one-day fixtures in ideal weather conditions.

Earlier in the season Kelly slammed 140 off 108 balls against Macedon, and Gisborne go into the festive season break unbeaten and hot favourites for the 2023-24 McIntyre 1sts flag.

All the favourites won in McIntyre 1sts on Saturday, with Gisborne bowling Diggers Rest/Bulla out for 116 as the pre-Christmas celebrations warmed up.

At Gilbert Gordon Oval, Woodend compiled 8/215 c.c. against Rupertswood with captain Marcus Stewart leading the way with 83 from 101 deliveries.

After being a shaky 4/86 at one stage, Stewart held the innings together and was not dismissed until 200 runs were on the board.

Woodend all-rounders Hayden Ingleton and Warren Else each captured four wickets as Rupertswood crumbled for 113.

In the other two matches second-placed Romsey’s 9/208 proved to be 48 runs too much for Sunbury Kangaroos, and finals aspirant unbury United defeated Macedon by 75 runs.

Karl Sutherland’s unbeaten 102 from 94 balls for Rupertswood was enough to dash Woodend’s hopes in McIntyre 2nds.

Kapilment Singh Sandhu compiled an unbeaten 101 for Aintree against Malmsbury in a high scoring Jensen 1sts encounter at the MCG. Evergreen Peter Sankey retired unbeaten on

102 for Gisborne in Club North.

The closest finish of the day saw Romsey defeat Hanging Rock by one run in Jensen 1sts, with Daniel Wright the star with bat and ball for the winners.

The game was played in great spirit under blue skies on a perfect summer’s day on the turf wicket at Sunbury’s Clarke Oval.

In a match between the top two teams in the Veterans Cricket Saxon Shield Competition, the Sunbury Macedon Ranges Veterans CC lost by four runs in a close and exciting finish to a great game against South East Veterans CC. The game was played in great spirit under blue skies on a perfect summer's day on the turf wicket at Sunbury’s Clarke Oval.

The South East Vets won the toss and decided to bat first and got away to a good start by their opening pair before the first wicket fell. Tight bowling backed up by good fielding from the Sunbury Macedon team was restricting the opposition from scoring freely and the grassy open spaces of Clarke Oval was making runs hard come by. Wickets fell at regular intervals with some good batting partnerships in between and after 40 overs the South East Veterans had reached 8 /162. A good score on the large ground.

With a strong batting lineup, the Sunbury Macedon Ranges team was confident of

getting the runs. However they lost two quick wickets at the start of their innings and their batters started to knuckle down to get the score back on target.

Runs were hard to score as the South East Veterans team were bowling a good line and were not prepared to bowl anything loose and allow the Sunbury Macedon to get on top.

The Sunbury Macedon middle order bats were making the most of a few loose deliveries and started scoring runs quickly to get the team into a winning chance at the drinks break.

Two wickets fell quickly after the break and the game was again looming as a close finish. Sunbury Macedon started to push the run rate again and with 10 overs remaining they needed to score 58 runs. A couple of quick wickets fell and the game changed once again.

The South East veterans appearing to be in control of the result however Sunbury

Macedon Ranges had other ideas and with five overs remaining and four wickets in hand just 28 runs were needed to win. After a compulsory retirement at 40 runs, Sunbury Macedon – then needing 13 runs from four overs – looked like winning the match.

A wicket fell, and four runs needed with 11 balls remaining. Another wicket fell with nine balls remaining and four runs still needed.

In a very close end to the match, Sunbury Macedon Ranges lost its last wicket and fell short by four runs.

This match was the very first 'Home Turf Wicket' match for the Sunbury Macedon Ranges Veterans Cricket Club and was made possible by the Sunbury Cricket Club preparing the turf wicket at Clarke Oval and hosting the match.

It was a great example of how veterans cricket is played. Two competitive teams playing the match in great spirit, showcasing the social, physical and mental health benefits of being involved in veterans cricket.
