KOBY SOARS Traralgon export wins $7.5m Golden Eagle

Flying like an eagle: Traralgon riding export Koby Jennings celebrates his last-stride triumph aboard Colette in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill on Saturday.

TRARALGON jockey Koby Jennings soared to the top of the Sydney horse racing scene last weekend.

Jennings, 25, landed his greatest career success to date when he partnered Colette to a thrilling victory in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill. “I think it’s still sinking in that I’ve won it,�

Jennings told The Express.

The Golden Eagle is Australia’s third richest race after The Everest and the Melbourne Cup. Jennings got the call during the week from Godolphin trainer James Cummings to ride Colette and the young gun justified the faith.

He produced a gem of a ride to get the four-yearold mare home by a short-head from Icebath, with Dawn Passage third. “On the line I was probably 95 per cent that I got it, but it can be a tricky angle at Rosehill,� he said. “We were cantering back to the mounting yard and (fellow jockey) Jay Ford saw the number go up on the board before I did, he turned to me and said ‘you’ve won it’. “It was an incredible feeling.�

A delighted Cummings praised Jennings’ temperament both on and off the track. “I rang Koby during the week and had to la augh,� he said. “He was so relaxed I asked him if he was out fishing? i He said ‘no I’m not, but as a matter of fact I’m watching a fishing fii show. “I knew I had a pretty relaxed customer on this horse. “Koby kept his head and she (Colette) savaged the line, she looked like (her sire) Hallowed Crown in the last 100m.�

Colette earned $4.1 million for her win, with connections nominating the Team Tye Foundation for a $410,000 donation.

The foundation was set up by former jockey Tye Angland, a great mate of Jennings, who suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury in Hong Kong in 2018.

Jennings said that was the icing on the cake and post-race gave a shout out to his family and friends watching in Traralgon.

Indecent exposure, Moe POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man allegedly exposed himself on Moe-Yallourn Rail Trail on October 30.

with Tessa Randello Valley. On Saturday, October 31 local police focused on Morwell and Traralgon with the help of Victoria Police Air wing and Dog Squad.

A man from Morwell was arrested and bailed for possession of a drug of dependence, a Traralgon man was arrested and bailed for cultivating a narcotic plant and a Cranbourne man was arrested for theft-related offences and will face court at a later date.

Two drivers were also processed for drug driving and one driver was processed for drink driving.

Sergeant Brian Dalrymple said it was a successful night for the operation, which has been running for 10 months.

“The operation aims to influence road user behaviour to create safer roads for the public,” he said.

“The Air Wing assistance is ongoing so even if drivers decide they don’t want to stop for police, the police car behind them is not the only vehicle there.”

Petition for tighter limits

MORE than 110 healthcare workers have signed a petition calling for the Environment Protection Authority to set tighter pollution limits on the Latrobe Valley’s brown coal-fired power stations.

The EPA expects to issue amended licences for each of the three brown coal-fired power stations by the end of this year with a report of the process that began in 2017.

It is part of EPA’s periodic licence-review program which ensures licences are kept up to date with changing science, environmental conditions and community standards.

Environment groups have accused the EPA of stalling the progress and are calling for the authority to include more stringent greenhouse gas limits and toxic pollution controls.

Healthcare worker and community group Healthcare for Clean Air Gippsland formed after a Healthy Futures air quality forum in the Valley in August and is circulating the EPA petition.

It has stated that levels of air pollution recorded

in the Latrobe Valley and in Melbourne have been associated with increased risk of death, acute asthma, preterm birth and low birthweight.

Traralgon nurse and Healthcare for Clean Air Gippsland member Bosede Adetifa has lived in the Valley for the past 20 years and has seen a prevalence of increased childhood asthma attacks.

Ms Adetifa was calling for pollution levels to be brought in line with more stringent international standards.

“I have heard doctors over time advising patients to relocate from Gippsland because the Valley environment is polluting and impacting health,” she said.

“I have raised all my children here, and they were impacted by asthma too, we were advised to leave Gippsland to reduce these asthma attacks.”

Environment Victoria campaigns manager Nicholas Aberle accused the EPA of letting big energy companies dump millions of tonnes of pollution into the atmosphere “and get off scot-free”.

“The EPA is Victoria’s pollution watchdog but they’re currently missing in action when it comes to the biggest source of climate pollution - our coal-burning power stations,” he said.

“If, in 2020, the EPA fails to put limits on how much carbon pollution the power stations pump into the atmosphere, you’d have to wonder what they’re doing.”

An Australian Energy Council spokesman said this campaign was part of a broader push to close coal-fired power stations early, which would have “serious economic consequences for the region”.

He said retro-fitting pollution controls to these power stations would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, risk plant performance and ultimately their commercial viability.

“Australian coal-fired plants are built with equipment that reflects the type of fuel they use, their location and the existing regulatory requirements,” the spokesman said.

“They operate within stringent regulatory limits to maintain air quality.”

LOWANNA College has launched an application to study the growth of golden wattle seeds from space.

The One Giant Leap foundation has organised for 950 golden wattle seeds to be sent to the International Space Station for six months and will return in August next year.

Lowanna hopes to win six of the seeds from the space station and another six from the same lot, that remain on Earth, to grow at the school.

The effects of seeds spending time in outer space are currently unknown and students at the school have made posters asking questions about what will happen if they are successful in receiving a batch.

Lowanna College science teacher and sustainability coordinator Judith Stewart said there were interesting questions asked by the students and staff.

“If we are successful we will grow the wattle seeds and then use them to cook with, so my initial question was, will the seeds from space taste any different? I hope we are able to find out,” she said.

“Students asked some great questions, some about how space will effect their growth and a great one asked if the seeds may see aliens out there.

“When the students are thinking about these questions they are interested and engaged with the subject matter.

“The students could have a chance to have contact with an astronaut during the process and I want them to know that kind of job is not out of reach - it’s just science.”

Ms Stewart said the students hoped to plant the seeds specific distances, in a style similar to the solar system.

“Our involvement in this program, and our proposal to plant them on the College grounds is designed to promote inquiry into space program technology, science, physics, agriculture, Indigenous food plants, Indigenous food culture, planets and the solar system,” she said.

Ms Stewart also said it was a fantastic opportunity to combine science and the school’s Indigenous food program.

“There is so much for the students to learn about Indigenous food, we have had an Indigenous food program for the last few years and winning these seeds would be a great addition,” she said.

THE Nationals are calling on the state government to implement its Back to Work, Back in Business Plan.

Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien said the “centrepiece” of the plan is a proposed $1 billion Bringing Manufacturing Home fund.

“In part it’s about expanding our manufacturing base, looking at innovation and the high tech areas that will help us provide jobs in the future and also about looking at bringing back some of the industries that we let go,” he said.

“Victoria was once the heartland of manufacturing and we think it can be again ... it’s not for us as politicians to say what those industries should be, we will put up the money and the incentives and industry will come to us and tell us what they should be.”

Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said Moe’s Safetech was the perfect example of an industry “where we can still see development and growth”.

“I think one of the key things that we have learnt through this COVID is that we need local investment in local jobs and Safetech is an amazing example of a business that has been an overnight success for 30 years,” she said.

“We need to see more Safetech’s in our region.”

Safetech director David Wakefield said the fund would be successful for manfacturing in the area because the National’s Business Plan is focused around advice from people in the field.

“We started in 1984, with various transitions we have moved into this industry ... we have learnt to make a lot of bespoke products here, we have catered to our market that is the skill set that you have to gain in most businesses,” Mr Wakefield said.

“Generating new skills and equipment in contemporary ways would ensure the sustainability of the missing links in the chain (for manufacturing in Australia).”

Mr Wakefield said Safetech did not have to close because of coronavirus, but has made changes to remain safe.

“The hardest thing for Australia is sending product out on a ship, it takes a long time and costs a lot of money so our skillset need to be of value,” Mr Wakefield said.

“If we can upskill our staff to have a broader understanding of the business we will manufacture

more efficiently, make fewer mistakes and have things moving faster out the door.”

The Back to Work and Back in Business Plan proposed by the Nationals also includes fasttracking of the Princes Highway duplication to Sale, the reintroduction of the Country Roads and Bridges Program and a $250 million fund to help businesses and government agencies and their staff to implement work from home opportunities, particularly in regional areas.

Participate in community briefing pandemic. The Hazelwood team has modified its work practices in line with the COVID-19 restrictions with minimal disruption to Study progress.

By prioritising the analysis of already-collected data, over new data collection, the researchers have continued to address the core health questions set with the local community following the 2014 mine fire.

The Community Briefing will include presentations and give residents a chance to hear directly from the different research streams about the recent study findings, progress since last year

and about future plans. Residents will also have an opportunity to submit written questions via an online chat function, and have those answered by the researchers at the conclusion of the presentations.

The study is funded by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

TESTING for coronavirus in wastewater systems in Moe and Traralgon has not detected any of the virus since the first week of September.

But local wastewater has not been tested, with Sale not included in the intensive statewide wastewater testing program.

A Health Department spokesperson said coronavirus was detected in Moe and Traralgon in early September in line with active coronavirus cases in the area at the time.

Since then, weekly sewage samples have been taken, with testing expected to continue in these and 38 other Victorian sites for the foreseeable future “as an additional tool to the existing public health response”, which includes testing and social distancing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services said it could take several weeks for individuals to stop shedding the virus, and all Gippsland residents with symptoms, no matter how mild, were encouraged to get tested.

The spokesperson said that if coronavirus was detected in the wastewater of an area where there had not been recent positive cases, local communities would be encouraged to get tested to prevent any possible transmission.

She said weekly sewage samples had been taken in Wonthaggi since August 31, in Warragul since September 3 and in Cowes since October 13, with no detections of coronavirus so far.

DIY renovators be warned!

One in three Australian homes is said to contain asbestos, and home renovators are feeling the financial burden of discovering the deadly material in their properties.

Television series such as The Block and House Rules have prompted many to do home renovation work themselves in an effort to save time and costs associated with professionals. However, spending the extra money to have asbestos sheeting removed professionally reduces the risk of exposing you and your family to this deadly dust.

Dangers of exposure during home renovation A study by Associate Professor Eun-Kee Park et al entitled ‘Asbestos exposure during home renovation in New South Wales‘ has shown that during DIY renovations: • more than 60% of DIY renovators reported they’d been exposed to asbestos dust.

• 39.3% reported their partners were exposed to asbestos and 22.8% reported their children were exposed to asbestos.

• 59.2% had contact with AC Fibro Sheeting – most common activity resulting in asbestos exposure.

• non DIY renovators were less likely to be exposed/have their families exposed.

The ramifications of exposure to asbestos may not be realised until many years after initial inhalation. The most devastating consequence of asbestos is the development of mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer that always results in a terminal diagnosis. The average survival time after diagnosis is between 10 and 12 months.

No signs of slowing down Although asbestos was banned in 2003, importation continues from countries that have lesser safety standards and regulation than Australia. These imports have raised concerns of a “fourth wave” of potential sufferers.

In the case of terminal patients, the Courts facilitate a much quicker timetable, as unfortunately, many of the benefits available are lost once someone dies.

Cup fever strikes the Valley

PUNTERS were keen to get their bets on for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

People were lining up out the front when the doors of the Morwell TAB on Buckley Street opened at 7.30am.

A TAB spokesperson told The Express the Melbourne Cup was the biggest day for TABs around the country.

“Trading at the Morwell TAB has been busy with punters arriving from early in the morning to place bets on the Melbourne Cup,” the spokesperson said.

“With COVID safety paramount there are extra staff on duty across our TAB network, including Morwell, and additional cleaning measures in place.

“Our agent at Morwell advises that Tiger Moth has been a popular runner with locals given the area’s connections to the AFL premiership winning Richmond Football Club.”

Tiger Moth finished a game second behind Twilight Payment, who led all the way.

The winner was not without his backers, with one punter netting $130,000 after having $5000 on at $26.

Twilight Payment was ridden by jockey Jye McNeil, lining up in his first Melbourne Cup, trained by Joseph O’Brien and owned by a highprofile syndicate headed by leviathan businessman Lloyd Williams.

For Mr Williams, it was his seventh win as an owner, after Just A Dash (1981),What A Nuisance (1985), Efficient (2007), Green Moon (2012), Almandin (2016) and Rekindling (2017).

A total of $28 million was bet through the TAB across Victoria on the Melbourne Cup.

“I’ve had a few messages from school friends and family friends, and talked to mum (Carol) on the phone,” he said.

“On Saturday night I kicked on with my manager (Josh Barrett) and on the Sunday was able to go out for lunch with James and the Godolphin team to celebrate.”

A proud Carol shared the emotions she felt while watching her son on the coverage at her Traralgon home, with Koby’s dad Troy, Koby’s uncle Ricky and Koby’s nan Lorraine.

“I was nervous for him in the lead-up,” she said.

“He was meant to have four rides on the day, but two were scratched, so his first ride was in the Golden Eagle.

“I was right on the edge of my couch and once I found him in the run, was just focused on Koby.

“When he hit the line, I cried because I thought he was pipped at the post, his dad said ‘he got it, he got it’, but we weren’t sure.

“Once the number came up, we were all screaming and crying, and the phone started ringing off the hook. It was surreal.

“Koby did so well.”

Jennings studied at Traralgon College before embarking on a career in the saddle.

He started his jockey apprenticeship under grandfather John Kilgower before successful stints in Darwin and then Canberra.

Jennings made the move to Sydney six years ago and spoke of the challenges he faced on the way to making this breakthrough at the top level.

“It was hard as a new person coming into Sydney racing because the big stables have their usual riders and there weren’t that many opportunities,” he said.

“I only really started to get somewhere after I’d been here three years, I never thought of moving anywhere else, I just stuck at it.

“I’ve spent six years to become an overnight success.

Jennings has ridden 303 winners, including a Group 3 win aboard Luvaluva in the 2019 Summer Cup, which was his biggest career success before Saturday.

Life in the Harbour City is certainly agreeing with the Latrobe Valley export, having recently become engaged to partner Nerissa Copp, who coincidentally works for trainer Brad Widdup, who prepared the Golden Eagle runner-up Icebath.

“Even before Saturday I felt like I’ve got my mark and am entrenched in Sydney now,” he said.

“I have my trainers that I ride for and they give me great support which makes my job easier.”

JEAN Tops, the founder and president of Gippsland Carers Association died last Friday at the age of 79.

Ms Tops, who established the organisation in 1997 in response to a need to support the country’s unpaid carers in terms of peer support, education, information and advocacy, was a giant in the caring community.

At the time the GCA was formed, it was the only association of its kind in Australia.

Ms Tops was born on February 22, 1941 in East Gippsland.

She was thrust into the caring world when her daughter Moya was born with multiple disabilities.

Moya contracted the rubella virus in utero and as a result was born deaf, partly blind and with an intellectual disability.

Her granddaughter Lisa said age has caught up to her “nan”, who devoted her entire life looking for ways to support the region’s carers.

There are an estimated 27,000 caring families in Gippsland where many of the primary carers are in their 80s and 90s.

Lisa said up until a couple of years ago, her nan just kept going, prompting other members of the family to step in and help.

Lisa took over as association secretary and has been in the role for two years.

“A lot of people left that year and nan was really struggling and said she needed some help,” she said.

“Even though she can’t do it anymore she just kept pushing herself.”

Lisa said the association had been losing members, including people on the management committee, mostly because of old age.

She also hinted at the possibility that

GCA may fold at the end of this year if membership numbers don’t pick up.

Association treasurer Allan Hare has been tapped to replace Ms Tops as president.

He said an announcement whether GCA would continue to run will be announced during their annual general meeting, scheduled for November 25.

He said Ms Tops was hoping for young carers to come forward and become part of the association. GCA is self-funded and relies heavily on its $10 annual membership fee, although it also accepts donations.

“We’d like to get more people in the committee,” Mr Hare said, adding that he was also 79 years old.

Latrobe City councillor Dale Harriman, who was a carer to his parents and brother who died of cancer, made a comeback to the GCA to offer his services.

Cr Harriman said he joined the GCA five years ago after he found himself struggling to find support while caring for his parents.

“I didn’t know where to go or what carers are entitled to (and) the organisation put me in contact with the right people,” he said.

Cr Harriman said Ms Tops was instrumental in putting the issue of carers “on the map” and championed their rights.

“It was never about Jean, it’s always about carers which I think was her lasting legacy,” he said.

Cr Harriman also encouraged local businesses to “come onboard” and help GCA to continue running.

“It’s really important to keep it going,” he said.

A requiem mass for Ms Tops will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at St Kieran’s Catholic Church in Moe. It will be livestreamed commencing at 1pm as attendance will be by invitation only due to COVID-19 restrictions.

COMMUNITY group Voices of the Valley is jumping aboard a Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal appeal over the Hazelwood North used lead acid battery plant.

Voices of the Valley has applied to become a third party to represent the community in the case of Chunxing versus Latrobe City Council.

VotV convenor Wendy Farmer said more than 50 community members has signed up for the group to represent them at the five-day VCAT hearing expected to take place in April. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The community still has real concerns about the health and safety of the surrounding area and wanted to make sure they were represented at the appeal,â&#x20AC;? Ms Farmer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know Latrobe City will represent us, but we still felt it was important for the community to be a part of this and have its own voice.â&#x20AC;?

Latrobe City Council rejected a planning application for Chunxing to build the battery recycling plant on Fourth Road at a special council meeting in September.

Latrobe City received 127 submissions with overwhelming community objections and concerns surrounding potential lead contamination in the local area.

Chunxing is taking Latrobe City to VCAT in an attempt to overturn councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s refusal to grant the planning application.

VotV has applied to become a third party on the grounds of concerns over the health and safety of residents living in the Latrobe Valley, which is in a health innovation zone.

The group has also filed concerns over potential lead emissions and ground water contamination, loss of amenity and the future direction for new industry in the Valley.

Ms Farmer said the group was preparing for its role in the appeal and was working with local community members.

on the VCAT appeal. The company has rigorously defended the safety credentials of the project, which would follow worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best practice and operate hundreds of times below accepted lead emissions standards.

Chunxing plans to process 50,000 tonnes of lead acid batteries into 28,000 tonnes of refined lead per year.

Commonwealth off to Mid Valley ANOTHER banking giant is abandoning the Morwell central business district as the Commonwealth Bank has confirmed it is relocating from Commercial Road to Mid Valley early next year.

CBA regional manager David Castle said the Morwell branch was “still fully operational” but would reopen with a “newer, and more innovative space for customers” at Mid Valley.

The relocation is planned to take place in a weekend, but the Morwell branch will continue to operate until the Friday prior to a Monday opening.

“We’re investing in our presence in the Morwell community,” Mr Castle said.

“We’ve found our new style branches are popular with customers and look forward to welcoming Morwell customers over to the upgraded branch,” Mr Castle said.

He said the new branch will “showcase the latest in banking technology” including ATMs with instant deposit and coin deposits.

NSW border will re-open NEW South Wales will re-open its border to Victoria next week, Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced yesterday.

The border will open at 12:01am on Monday, November 23, for Victorians who have not been able to travel into the state since July 8.

Ms Berejiklian said the reopening date should give people the confidence to make plans, book holidays and reunite with family members in the lead up to Christmas.

“I want to thank the community, particularly in our border towns, for their patience during what has been an extremely difficult time,” she said.

“We have worked closely with the Victorian Government throughout the border closure and will continue to monitor the situation as restrictions are eased.

“Our policy in NSW is to keep moving forward and operating in a COVIDSafe manner - the reopening of the NSW/Victorian border is another step in the right direction.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said Monday November 23 would be two weeks from the Victorian Government removing the ‘ring of steel’ border, which will allow Victorian residents to travel freely around NSW. “Victorian and NSW residents’ efforts have ensured families and friends will be back together and businesses will operate freely but in a COVIDSafe way,” he said.

Locals go nuts for donuts

DESPITE its challenges Powerhouse Donuts is open for business.

A rocky beginning for the Niero family finally took a turn in the right direction to see customers walk through the doors of their Church Street shop.

Powerhouse Donuts was set to open in March of this year, but flooding of the building in February, and the COVID-19 outbreak, halted progress.

“We had a machine with major water damage and had to wait for our new machine to arrive from overseas,” owner Adrian Niero said.

Looking at the positives Mr Niero said it gave him, his pastry chef and baker more time to create some different recipes.

Mr Niero and his family made the move to the Latrobe Valley three years ago.

“I’ve got friends who have been living up here all their life, I felt comfortable up here and I’ve always liked coming up here,” Mr Niero said.

“I married a country girl and thought I’d probably become a country boy one day. Since moving up here I’ve never felt more at home.”

Mr Niero and his wife Fiona previously operated a market style stall selling donuts based in Melbourne and told The Express they one day hoped to open a shop of their own.

“It was all by coincidence, we walked past and saw this shop sitting there and we’ve wanted to do donuts out of a shop ourselves for years,” Mr Niero said.

“We found out it was an old bakery, spoke to a real estate agent, saw some old equipment out the back that was being auctioned off, then we asked about a lease.”

With the help of a close friend they took to the drawing board to bring their dream to life.

“One of my best mates, he had a lot of input into it. So he, myself and my wife Fiona put our heads together and well, the rest is history,” Mr Niero said.

In the lead up to the opening and since then Mr Niero said he has been “excited, nervous and happy, all in one”.

“We’ve had some good and some bad feedback and only bad because they didn’t get their donuts first.”

SATURDAY night was filled with spooky superstitions as trick-or-treaters tried their luck gathering lolly loot to mark Halloween.

Grounded Paws Animal Rescue Cat Cafe in Traralgon threw some especially cute caution to the wind by opening its doors for for a feline-filled day of Halloween-themed fun.

The cafe opened earlier this year and is a place where customers enjoy a cup of coffee while mingling with the resident cats which are up for adoption.

The not-for-profit v venue raises money to help foster ca ats with hopes of re-homing them to visitors. v The Halloween event on Saturday was another vital fun ndraising venture, with patronss asked for a gold coin donatioon.

“We’ve all dressed up p and got little tricks that we’re w (to scare) people with and a a few mini games in the lounge l where let kids particip ipate and they get a little sccary gift,” event organisser Amber Tanti said.

“We’ve got lots off fundraising thingss going on that actually y help raise money as weell

as giving the kids a bit of fun. As much as they love having the fun it’s important they understand that little gold coin donation helps us out heaps.”

Since opening its doors in June, Grounded Paws has been able to re-home more than 300 cats.

“We’ve started doing movie nights as fundraisers as well and they’ve been such a success,” Ms Tanti said.

“We’ve raised so much money and as much as they’re sitting there watching a movie enjoying (it) the (it), they need to kn know the importance of that $10.

“We’ve got a lot of kittens in foster care at the moment that t need special milk and some are a bit sick k, so we need special things for them and it costs us a lot of money.”

There are many hurdles faced during our lifetime and as a young adult one of the most daunting would be undertaking final exams, and this year more so than ever.

Pressures have had to be faced that no other Year 12 students have had to endure in the past. Not only in respect of learning, but also in regard to student mental health and well-being, it has been a year like no other.

It is with great joy and relief that I am able to acknowledge the final year and farewell our graduating students from Trafalgar High School. Given the disruptions of the year it was indeed even questionable whether we would finish the year on site and together.

To say there have been additional challenges this year is stating the obvious and probably even understating the affects.

Together our students have journeyed through their thirteen years of education to create opportunities for themselves and for their next choice in their chosen pathway. Nothing can diminish the effort and achievement to reach this important milestone.

The unique challenges of this year must also be mentioned in the way each student has adapted whilst having built resilience to be stronger and more agile. These are qualities which will be useful throughout their lives.

As Principal I have witnessed the group bond together through this adversity, like no other group has. I hope you think back fondly of the memories you have created together. I have a strong sense of pride in you, what you have overcome, managed and achieved. I have no doubt that you will leave Trafalgar High School equipped to take up challenges and opportunities to thrive and fulfil your dreams.

TOURIST train operations at the Walhalla Goldfields Railway have recommenced.

Social distancing practices will be in place to reduce passenger capacity and enhanced cleaning procedures will also be implemented to protect passengers and railway staff.

WGR president Phillip Milbourne said the decision to reopen was taken after close consideration of the available advisory information from government agencies.

“We are acutely aware of the very subdued local trading conditions in and around Walhalla due to COVID19 and successive years of bushfires,” Mr Milbourne said.

Mr Milbourne said the railway was very conscious

of its responsibility as a highly visible attraction which draws many visitors to Gippsland.

“The loss of all train running income for seven months has been financially crippling, with substantial ongoing costs that have to be paid,” Mr Milbourne said.

“Our hardworking volunteers can’t wait to restart train operations in these fantastic late spring conditions.”

Online seminar to help prepare emergency plan BAW Baw Shire Council, Victoria Legal Aid and the Country Fire Authority will host an online seminar to help residents prepare emergency management plans for their properties.

The seminar will be delivered via Zoom on Wednesday, November 18 from 11am to 11.45am and will be tailored to Baw Baw residents.

Victoria Legal Aid lawyers will discuss the legal challenges a bushfire can cause and offer practical tips to help you to be prepared, including: ■ Ensuring insurance details are up-to-date and policies are appropriate, to ensure claims are easily met.

■ Identifying documents like wills and deeds that need to be stored somewhere safe or digitised.

Tenancy and accommodation issues.

■ Managing debt and financial hardship.

The Country Fire Authority will also provide an outline of the Fire Safety Outreach program, which provides advice and information to community members via telephone or email.

This free service allows community members and professionals to access information and fire safety education from CFA Community Education Officers.

Kidney Health Australia chief executive officer Chris Forbes said the idea behind the Red Socks Appeal was to recognise the countless hours that people of all ages with kidney failure spend hooked to a life-saving dialysis machine to help clean their body of toxins.

“A little-known fact about kidney disease is that people with kidney failure can spend 60 hours or more a month hooked to a dialysis machine to keep them alive,” Mr Forbes said.

“Dialysis machines basically clean the blood of toxins so it’s filtered out of the body and then returned, and this takes on average five hours at a time, three times a week.

“This process plus the long hours in the chair can leave patients feeling fatigued and quite cold, so a blanket and a warm pair of socks is a must to get them through it.”

“We’d love people to put themselves in the ‘socks’ of someone living with kidney disease and take

on a different type of challenge by either walking, running or riding 60kms to raise money for our courageous kidney community.”

For those keen to take on a more extreme challenge, the Red Socks Appeal also offers a 150km challenge - the equivalent of 30 dialysis sessions a month - for those who’d like to show an even greater commitment to the cause.

LIONS Club of Moe are once again seeking nominations for the Moe-Newborough Citizens of the Year Award which is presented on Australia Day. There are two categories, one for Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year for ages between 12 and 21 years and Australia Day Citizen of the Year.

Both of these awards will be presented on Australia Day at Gippsland Heritage Park, Moe. All nominations must be for a resident who live in the MoeNewborough area and have made or be making a valuable contribution to the Moe-Newborough community in a voluntary capacity.

Allowing camping in licensed water frontages makes no sense

IMAGINE one day you look out the front window and notice campers had decided to pitch a tent on your

nature strip. It’s safe to say it would be enough to raise your eyebrows and prompt a few questions.

The Victorian Government is proposing to make changes to the Land Act 1958 which looks to remove the existing prohibition on camping on licensed crown land water frontages.

Put simply, this legislation is akin to letting people camp on someone’s nature strip and is strongly opposed by the Victorian Farmers Federation.

Farming land is invaluable and needs to stay just that, not transformed into a camping spot for some campers who may have little or even no knowledge of farms or agriculture.

There are very real concerns of bio-security problems, pollution, littering, disturbance of birthing or young animals and the illegal removal of native vegetation or firewood that ultimately could lead to license holder prosecution.

When you take these into account from a farmer’s perspective, it begins to build a comprehensive argument as to why a proposal such as this makes no sense.

Add to this that Victorians already have access to over 7.4 million hectares of parks, forests and the fact people can already participate in low impact activities such as fishing and bushwalking on licensed water frontages.

Now is the time to band together and oppose the plan to allow camping on licensed water frontages. I would encourage

all concerned farmers to get in contact with their local MP and the VFF to see how together, we can help stop this.

It was after the Second World War ended that November 11 became known as Remembrance Day. This Remembrance Day I encourage all Australians to commemorate our fallen by sharing one minute’s silence in memory of the more than

102,000 Australian men and women who have died in over a century of service in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

I also encourage all Australians to wear a red poppy in remembrance of our fallen, and, if you are a member of our veteran community, to wear the Veteran Lapel Pin or Reservist Lapel Pin, provided as part of the Australian Defence Veterans’ Covenant, to help the community readily identify and acknowledge your service to our nation.

This time can be a very emotional one for veterans and their families. MAYBE I’m more cynical than I realise, however surely everyone else can see the deep irony in cutting down trees, in order to make fake trees, and install them in a facility with the name “creative” in the title (Heyfield mill chips in for Creative Precinct - The Express, November 2, 2020).

I’m all for local jobs.

I’m all for sustainable timber harvesting.

I’m all for timber in construction.

I’m all for a new arts centre.

And I’m all for the local timber industry.

However, if I want to see a tree I’m going to find a real one, even if it’s indoors in an atrium.

If I want to see a performance, I really don’t want to be greeted by a fake timber tree.

Is this really the best design we as a city could come up with?

How did all the people involved in this project not stop and think about how stupid this presents to the visiting tourist coming to see a show?

Are we really that insular that we are devoid of an outside perspective?

Report labelled ‘‘underwhelming’’

THE Bushfire Royal Commission’s final report is underwhelming, failing to properly recognise the importance of fuel reduction to prevent fires, according to the Institute of Foresters.

All governments need to put greater emphasis on prevention if more Black Summer disasters are to be avoided, says the IFA/AFG, which is the professional association that represents 1000 forest scientists, researchers, forest growers and professional forest managers.

The IFA/AFG Forest Fire Management Committee chair Gary Morgan AM AFSM (Australian Fire Service Medal) said Australia needed a better balance of fire prevention against fire response.

“The Royal Commission does not achieve this vision,” said Mr Morgan, who was Chief Fire Officer for Victoria’s Department of Sustainability and Environment from 1996-2005 and also chief executive of the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre from 2007-2014.

“While we’re pleased the Royal Commission recognised the importance of bushfire hazard reduction measures including prescribed burning, it’s essential a much greater focus is given to this area.”

The Royal Commission into National Disaster Arrangements, a 1000 page-plus report with more than 80 recommendations, said the Commonwealth needed new powers to intervene in natural disasters to deploy defence forces faster and override the states in “exceptional circumstances”.

It urged the creation of a new “authoritative disaster advisory body” to improve the co-ordination between governments.

The report noted the success of prescribed burning but said there was a “need for continuing research to address significant gaps in the science, including in relation to the role of fuels in extreme fires”.

Different views on fuel-load management had become “polarising”, it said, and warned against viewing prescribe burns as a “solution”.

It was not a panacea, the commissioners found, but they endorsed fuel-load management on private property and urged that landowners should be able to more easily obtain approvals for hazardreduction work.

The report also said climate change was a key factor behind the Black Summer fires, warning that further global warming over the next 20 to 30 years was inevitable.

Mr Morgan said reduced wildfire intensity was a good way to help biodiversity cope with climate change impacts.

“Changing the state of fuel across the landscape in a way that sustains biodiversity also reduced the severity of bushfires, so it’s a ‘win-win’ for longerterm management of the environment,” he said.

“However, to achieve this balance requires welltrained and locally knowledgeable land managers

such as forest scientists and professional forest managers who possess the right education, tools and know-how and interact with the land all year round.”

In his appearance before the Royal Commission, Mr Morgan had emphasised the different skills for fire suppression in urban and rural areas compared with the forest.

For example, in the forest, firemen built fire breaks to separate fuel from the ground; the higher intensity the fire, the greater the break had to be.

Land managers did not just fight fires but dealt with all year-round maintenance of roads and tracks, building up their knowledge.

“They do burning for ecological purposes and they do high intensity burning, so they get a better understanding about fires and fire behaviour,” he said.

They developed skills to put out fires using bulldozers and other machinery, not water, which was followed by rehabilitation and regeneration.

“They’re involved the whole way through ... an urban firefighter with an urban tanker is going to be no good 200 kilometres away from the nearest hydrant,” he said.

“You’ve got to be with the right equipment, the right personal protective gear, and being able to perform under these arduous conditions.”

Mr Morgan said the Royal Commission’s recommendation to use more aircraft was not the solution to Australia’s fire emergency problem.

“Globally we see greater use of very large aircraft in fire suppression. They look wonderful on television but are not always cost effective,” he said.

“Aircraft are important in fire suppression as well as for intelligence gathering and transport. To be effective, aircraft need trained forest fighters on the ground. Ground-based resources need more access via roads and tracks, particularly in remote areas.”

Mr Morgan said additional funding should be directed towards good land management and better fire detection rather than just increasing emergency response.

“Further research into the cost effectiveness of firebombing aircraft is required,” he said.

The report recognised the value of indigenous land and fire management practices to mitigate the effects of bushfires and improve disaster resilience.

Mr Morgan said it was encouraging that the report recommended the need to work with traditional owners to reintroduce large scale landscape fire management regimes.

“These practices should be fostered and reintroduced where possible, complementing existing prescribed burning programs but not replacing them,” he said.

However, Mr Morgan told a recent seminar that not all indigenous people had the skills and ability to use cultural burning.

Many in south-east Australia did not, but in the north, “they have really good skills and have been using and continue to use them”, he said.

Raiders to host improving Eagles

LEAGUE leaders Raiders welcome an improving Traralgon West to Yinnar Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The defending premiers have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their title defence with impressive wins against CATS and Jeeralang-Boolarra.

Captain Liam Maynard is in a rich vein of form with unbeaten knocks of 45 and 60 with the willow, and five wickets with the ball.

Seasoned campaigners Chris Stanlake, Brad Knowles and Jason MacFarlane, who scored 36 not out in last week’s win against Jeeralang-Boolarra, are also in good touch.

Traralgon West has opened the season by appearing in two thrillers.

The Eagles edged out Trafalgar by a

wicket before a six-run loss to Churchill last week.

New recruit Duminda Weerasooriya captured attention with a bag of 4/22 against one of the competition’s premier batting line-ups and adds a different dimension to an attack featuring Salman Rasool, Ben Edebohls, Hasitha Hewawasam and Liam Sumner.

Unbeaten Churchill travels to Mirboo North.

The Cobras come in off the back of a six-run win against Traralgon West, a victory that owed much to the contributions of Steve Warr (24 not out and 2/28), Ross Whelpdale (4/19) and Harry Van Rossum.

It is a third straight game on home soil for Mirboo North, who opened with a win against Moe before a six-wicket loss to Trafalgar.

Boom recruit Madura Perera is yet to fire with the willow, but showed some

good signs with the ball, claiming 2/26 last week.

The third unbeaten side, Morwell hosts Jeeralang-Boolarra at Morwell Recreation Reserve.

The Tigers have opened with wins against Latrobe and CATS. Dylan Day and Mark Cukier have each taken five wickets in the opening two matches, while Sam Mooney and Kris Fortuin are coming off last start half-centuries.

Centrals will look to build on a winning start against CATS at Apex Park.

The Lions looked good in defeating Latrobe first-up, having had the bye in Round 2.

Young gun Ethan Foley was the hero, scoring an impressive 54, after the attack featuring Marc Fenech, Lachlan Patterson, Tom Webster, captain-coach Robert Webber and Corey Pollard bowled with outstanding discipline.

CATS are still chasing a first win of the season following losses to Raiders and Morwell, the latest only by 11 runs.

Trafalgar, fresh off a win against Mirboo North, face Moe. The Ships welcomed back Leo Connolly following the end of his St Kilda commitments and the talented sportsman made a great impression, taking 2/8 from five overs.

Blair Clymo has also hit the ground running, scoring 60 and an unbeaten 41, to currently own the Bradman-esque average of 101.

Clymo is not the only former CaseySouth Melbourne player to feature in this clash with Joel Mitchell one of the key men for the Lions.

Mitchell took 3/34 in Moe’s only game of the season so far, a loss to Mirboo North.

Brotherly love set aside as Tigers, Magpies meet CRICKET TDCA

BROTHERLY love will be set aside this weekend as the TDCA has some tantalising match ups in a big Round 4.

Match of the round will take place at Stoddart Oval between rivals Gormandale and Glengarry with both clubs having improved massively after big name signings have made an instant impact.

Gormandale’s Yohan Soyza oozes class and has sent a warning shot to batsmen all over the league that he will be hard to deal with all season.

Tate Marsh was touted as a player to watch this season for the Tigers and rightfully so with the young gun making a very good 61 last week when his team was under the pump.

Glengarry’s match was abandoned last weekend but the Magpies have still shown they are a good team this season. Sam Marks’ return after a few interrupted years looks to be just the tonic Glengarry are after.

Prediction: Gormandale dominated Glengarry last year and on their home

deck they are a force to be reckoned with. Glengarry will need to nullify Adam Brady as he has a great record against the Magpies.

The Match Up: This will be the first time the Freitag brothers (Nathan and Dylan) will take the field on opposing teams this week. Bragging rights are certainly on the line and with both players in great touch already it should be a great spectacle to behold.

Duncan Cameron Park will play host to Rovers and the new boys on the block Yarram & District.

Everything went right for Rovers last round which will fill this team with a tremendous amount of confidence.

Ewan Williams got a good score with the rest of the team contributing nicely.

Young skipper Dougal Williams’ captaincy was spot on and making brave moves like opening Connor Little were a masterstroke.

Yarram & District will be fresh coming off the bye and still riding high after their historic Round 2 win over Imps.

On a flat wicket their hard hitting players like Ant Scott, Brayden Askew, Welles Jenkins and Daniel O’Keefe will be looking to go big while Brett Pedlow

will work hard and graft out an innings in support of the heavy hitters.

Yarram’s bowling needs to tighten up a little bit but there were certainly some positive signs in their opening match.

Prediction: Small boundaries and a flat deck put Yarram in the box seat coming into the match. If Ant Scott gets going there could be some broken tiles on the houses around DCP this week so Rovers must get him early to send a shudder through the Pelicans otherwise they wont have a chance.

The Match Up: In Alberton cricketing circles the last name Collins is a big one while in the TDCA, Littles have made massive impacts for a range of clubs over the journey. With Jack Collins set to open the bowling against Connor Little this could be the start of a great rivalry between the two players and indeed the two clubs.

Ex Students will welcome Imperials to the Traralgon Recreation Reserve this week and will be incredibly confident in taking out this match.

The Sharks didn’t get a game in last weekend after the ground not being fit for play, but this week’s weather has been great.

Imperials are in panic mode and need a win big time.

With no disrespect intended Imperials would have expected to be two from two this season already but instead sit on the bottom of the ladder.

Brett Chapman must get a big score here and at the very least be aiming to claim the bonus point that’s in play if they can’t get the win.

Brad Sizeland is in good touch with the ball, but he isn’t getting much support and after a woeful showing in the field last weekend Imps must take every opportunity to have a sniff against this class Sharks outfit.

Prediction: Something miraculous would need to occur for Imps to win this.

A Joel Randall super spell or a Brett Chapman 100 might give them a hope but Imps have had their depth tested again and again against Ex Students and have been found wanting for quite a while now.

The Match Up: Another set of brothers will be going at it in this match as well.

Jimmy Pryde of Ex Students and David Pryde of Imperials will also have bragging rights on the line.

Life membership for three of the best GOLF

IN the 130 year history of Traralgon Golf Club, only a handful have been granted life membership.

So when, three current members were presented this honour at the recent annual general meeting, it was a momentous occasion.

Current president Jim Hagart has, in three stints, been club president for 10 of the last 20 years. He co-ordinated a reorganisation from a large committee structure to that of a slim board.

More recently Jim has supported major clubhouse renovations, navigated the club through a pandemic and overseen a significant turnaround in the clubs financials.

Dedicating his award to the club’s remarkable number of volunteers, Jim has been instrumental in co-ordinating grounds works around the club for two decades.

Bruce Lawn has played a major co-ordinating role in numerous roles at TGC. He was chair of the pro-am committee for seven years and has been club captain, a vice-captain, co-ordinated the Traralgon Classic and was a member of the general committee.

He was instrumental in a greens renovations programs and organising expert advice for the club’s fairway grasses.

The author of the club’s history, Beyond Traralgon Park, Bruce was humble in accepting the award, citing

many others who had assisted in this achievement.

Peter McCulloch is a man who makes things happen.

He has been a junior vice-president, a Director of House, formed a “Dad’s Army” of volunteers and chaired the newly-formed seniors nine-hole group.

Most significantly though, he was club chairperson of the newly-formed board structure. Under his stewardship, the course fairways were converted to Santa Ana grasses, now seen as Gippsland’s best.

Peter dedicated his award to his late wife Lyn, saying the recognition was for her.

The club said it took great pleasure in awarding the life memberships to the three gentlemen.

Summer Iso-Championships heating up

RUNNING

A TOTAL of 68 runners competed for points, running simultaneously over seven different courses in Round 3 of the Traralgon Harriers’ Thursday night Summer Iso-Championships last week.

With their race times stretching out a number of the participants admitted to “paying the price” for little exercise or training when the Harriers were in recess due to the virus.

Following the extreme rain episode over the eastern edge of Traralgon in the afternoon, the Racecourse-Ellavale group found themselves ankle deep in water along part of the course.

In a duel between the two quickest runners Zack Beasley (18.21) edged ahead of Glenn Graham by 12 seconds, with Joe Patrick next in 20.07.

In the battle between two talented young runners Zach Nabulsi (20.43) finished narrowly ahead of Newborough youngster Miles Verschuur (20.59).

Quickest women over 5km were Molly Irvine (21.21), Karen Graham (23.06) and Alysha Duncan (23.41).

Equivalent 5km times for Kay Arrowsmith and Yani Cornthwaite, who ran the 6km course, were 22.40 and 23.08.

Yallourn will again host Super6 event Star power: Geoff Ogilvy, Marcus Fraser and Brendon Goddard headlined the field at the inaugural Gippsland Super 6 in 2019. The event will return to the Yallourn Golf Club in January 2021.

THE Gippsland Super 6 will return to Yallourn Golf Club from January 21-24 to restart the 2020/2021 ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia wraparound season.

A field of 132 golf professionals will compete across three days of strokeplay with the top 24 advancing to the final day’s dramatic six-hole match play shootout.

The ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia event, in partnership with the state government, is one of golf’s most exciting and dynamic formats that promises to entertain spectators.

“We’re looking forward to the re-commencement of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia in picturesque Gippsland, and we will be working closely with Yallourn Golf Club to ensure a safe event for everyone,” PGA of Australia tournaments director Australasia Nick Dastey said.

“Having the likes of Major winner Geoff Ogilvy and Olympian Marcus Fraser play our inaugural event gives you a taste for the talent that will be on display again in 2021 and we can’t wait to play the exciting Super 6 format on the final day and see the Yallourn Golf Club in all its glory under some fine blue skies.”

Victorian Tom Power Horan took home the title in a rain-affected, shortened strokeplay edition of the event last November, with organisers excited to explore the fully-fledged flag hunting format this time around.

As the first official Order of Merit event on the Tour since February 2020, the 2021 Gippsland Super 6 will be a domestic drawcard, with big names in Australian golf expected to tour on home soil, instead of abroad, in a major coup for regional Victoria.

A day to remember: Celine Gaudray brings Tippitywichit back to scale after her first winner at Traralgon on Saturday.

CELINE Gaudray had a day to remember at Traralgon on Saturday.

The apprentice jockey not only rode her first-ever winner, but followed up with her second in the very next race on the Derby Day program.

Gaudray produced a gem to guide Tippitywichit to victory for her boss Pat Carey in the Cleaners World Gippsland Rating 58 Handicap (1430m).

The speedy gelding went straight to the front and never looked like being run down, strolling in to win by a length and a half from We Want Frankie.

Gaudray illustrated that success had not gone to her head by getting Chas Marlow home in equally impressive fashion.

Chas Marlow thrived at the chance to dictate terms on speed to win the Super Safe Hire Rating 58 Handicap (1430m) by a length and a half.

Gaudray, a member of Racing Victoria’s apprentice jockey program, had her first ride at Moe in June.

She shared the day’s riding honours with Matthew Cartwright, who completed an early

double. Cartwright lifted Smuggler ($61) to a surprise victory in the Latrobe City Council Maiden Plate (1100m) for trainer Craig Blackshaw.

The three-year-old colt by Headwater failed to fire a shot on debut at Geelong, but illustrated he has a good future ahead by overhauling Casino Nicconi late to prevail by a length.

Cartwright did the majority of punters a favour with a good ride getting favourite Fudging ($3.10) home in the Steeline Gippsland Maiden Plate (1100m) for trainer Jerome Hunter.

Other winners on the program were Be Amazing (Team Yargi/Jack Hill), Alexander Hamilton (Rachael Frost/Remi Tremsal), Twist of Fury (David Brideoake/Lachlan Neindorf), Trotsie (Rhonda Mangan/Jessie Philpot) and Lady D’Oro (Robbie Griffiths and Mathew De Kock/Matthew Allen).

“This is a huge win for Gippsland with the recommencement of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia kicking-off at Yallourn Golf Club in January, following a week of Pro-Am events across the region,” Latrobe Valley Authority chief executive officer Karen Cain said.

“The Latrobe Valley Authority is pleased to help bring the PGA back to Gippsland through the $85 million Latrobe Valley Sports and Community Initiative which is building local capacity, increasing participation and fostering regional pride through major events.”

Originally scheduled for November this year, the 2020 event was postponed due to coronavirus (COVID-19) to ensure the competitors and Gippsland spectators could enjoy a high-profile event that is COVID-safe.

The Gippsland Super 6 is being delivered in partnership with the state government through the Latrobe Valley Authority’s $85 million Latrobe Valley Sports and Community Initiative.

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has welcomed the announcement of the state’s first motorsport and motorcycling funding program, backing community clubs, participants and encouraging greater female participation.

“The community motorsports program was launched as part of the $7.1m Racing into a New Era for Motorsport and are now open for application,” Mr Northe said.

Grants of up to $20,000 are available for the purposes of hosting events and activities; whilst up to $5000 is on offer for initiatives that boost female participation.

Other funding streams include support for the purchase of equipment and volunteer training.

“These grants can make a real difference to

local grassroots motorsport and motorcycle clubs and organisations in the Morwell electorate,” Mr Northe said.

“Motorsports are extremely popular in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region, and it’s pleasing to see funding opportunities available for motorsport clubs and their volunteers and participants.”

Applications are open to motorsport clubs and organisations currently affiliated with Motorsport Australia or Motorcycling Victoria, this also includes clubs and organisations affiliated with a delegated body of Motorsport Australia such as karting Victoria or the Australian National Drag Racing Association.

Grants from the Community Motorsport Program are available under two categories: ■ Motorsport Club Assistance - initiatives

to boost women and girls participation (up to $5000); hosting events and activities (up to $20,000); funding to purchase safety and operational equipment (up to $10,000); training for volunteers and officials to build club capacity (up to $5000).

■ Infrastructure Upgrades and Equipment - funding to purchase critical facility equipment (up to $50,000); and deliver minor (up to $100,000) and major infrastructure developments (up to $500,000).

The Community Motorsport Program will have four rounds of assessment periods with final applications closing June 30, 2022.
