Greetings from the Executive Director I am so pleased to present to you our newly redesigned Library Highlights magazine! With the arrival this summer of our brand new website and its powerful search capabilities, it will be quicker and easier for you to discover all of our wonderful events and programs at each of our 25 library branches. The new website’s search capabilities mean that we can now devote more of Library Highlights pages to in-depth articles on our visiting authors, musicians, theater groups, and gallery artists, as well as tips and updates on how to take advantage of everything that we offer.

GREETINGS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am so proud to share with you that our new Mesquite Library Campus will officially open on May 31, 2018. We call it a campus because it consists of two structures: a brand new 13,313 sq. ft. main building and our remodeled 5,464 sq. ft. Learning Center, which previously served as the library. Please join us for a day of fun and discovery about how our 21st century libraries can change your life!

19

16 Teen Tech Week

As part of our mission to continually expand our services, we are also proud to be partnering with Workforce Connections’ One-Stop Career Centers. This community resource provides local residents with help and guidance in writing résumés, connecting with employers, and building careers. We currently have One-Stop Career Centers in four of our libraries. Learn more and what they add to our libraries’ existing services, on page 5.

18

We’re also gearing up for Club Read, our annual summer reading program for kids from birth through high school age, which kicks off on June 1st. This year will be our best ever with lots of opportunities to keep that brain power sparking and prevent “summer slide.” Studies show that kids who read (or are read to) over the summer improve their reading skills, whereas those who don’t often lose reading proficiency.

20

Come see us and take advantage of our free, fun, creative, new library card designs. You’ll find a favorite for each member of the family!

Coming Soon Speak Unique in Job Interviews By London Porter Author, Human Resources @ The Library District

You’ve landed that job interview, now you’re preparing for your big chance to impress…here are some tips! As someone who sits on the other side of that desk, I can assure you that your human resources interviewer is hoping that you are the candidate they have been searching for. Nothing makes me happier than finding that just right person to fill a position. Here are a few tips and resources to help you on your journey! 1. Be Memorable by Being Prepared. Get a great night’s sleep the night before. Do your company research (LinkedIn.com, Glassdoor.com), know the position, and be ready to share your top three skills that are relevant to this role. Bring multiple copies of your résumé. Practice clear and concise reasons why you want to work for this organization. Tell them what you bring, not what they can do for you. Watch Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk, “Power Pose,” on YouTube for further tips. 2. Be an Aggressive Listener. Lean in, listen closely to others, make eye contact, smile, and nod your head when 4

M A R C H | A P R I L | M AY

you like what was said. Write down the names of anyone you meet and notate interesting points that you can include in your thank you letter. 3. Discover the Pain. Be Curious. Look for clues as to how this vacant position is causing lost productivity. What tasks are not getting done? Who is lassoed with picking up the slack? Is the organization losing money, production time, customer loyalty, etc.? Be clear on how your skills and experience can be a potential solution to their pain. 4. Show Me vs. Tell Me. What examples or stories can you share that demonstrate your industry knowledge, mentor relationships, and/or real world experience that they will find valuable or interesting? Take time to think about your experiences with conflict resolution, customer service, accepting feedback, and time management, to name a few.

5. Zero A, B, C-ing. There should be Zero Accusing, Blaming, or Complaining escaping your lips. If they ask your approach to managing difficult people or situations, be ready with a sincere answer or example that shows your positive approach to solving problems. 6. Speak Up. Have some prepared questions that show you have viewed their website, understand who their competition might be. If something in the conversation sparks your interest, don’t hesitate to jump in and ask them to tell you more about it. Genuine interest in their company and needs will be noticed and appreciated! 7. Be Grateful and Mindful. It’s OK if you’re a little nervous, everyone has been there (including your interviewer). Ask for clarification and examples if you’re unsure about a topic. Do your best to answer questions thoughtfully and

confidently. You’ve got this! Be mindful not to overstay your allotted time, sincerely thank your host(s) for their time and consideration, and ask for their business card(s). Then email a thank you note that same day, or the next at the latest. 8. Need More Career Advice? Visit your nearest library branch or check out our website for books and eResources to guide you along your career path. Best of luck to you!

Jason Farnham

Flor de Toloache

Piano on Fire with a Techno Beat

Casting Their Mariachi Love Spell

If Yanni got caught in a tornado with the electronic percussion of Dido and Moby and the dramatic overtures of Beethoven tossed in for good measure, that would begin to describe the unmistakable style of a Jason Farnham show.

As the first and only Latin Grammynominated, all-female mariachi group, Flor de Toloache’s critically acclaimed, self-titled debut album was among the “Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album” performances of 2015. Sharing the podium with legends Pedro Fernández and Aida Cuevas was a huge embrace from the Latin Music Community, and the group’s live performances were praised by Rolling Stone, Billboard, The New Yorker, GQ, and The New York Times.

“An Evening of Piano with Jason Farnham” delights audiences around the U.S. Fans have affectionately dubbed him “Schroeder” from Peanuts because of his toy piano, his witty Victor Borge-style piano comedy antics, and the clever way he interacts with the audience, often standing up while playing. His repertoire is always fresh and surprising and includes contemporary romantic piano, jazz, bossa nova, blues, stride piano, and classical with a modern twist (literally and figuratively… he’s fond of playing the keys while upside down on the piano bench).

10

M A R C H | A P R I L | M AY

Audiences will recognize well-known classical melodies infused with modern, techno beats, such as his original arrangements “Fur God Sakes Elise, Let’s Dance!,” based on “Fur Elise” by Beethoven, and “Rondo Alla Techno,” based on “Rondo Alla Turca” by Mozart. Jason started playing the piano at age four, and was classically trained until the jazz bug bit him in junior high school. By high school he was writing his own music. Today, he is a sought-after composer, performer, and record producer, claiming among his credits the music for the Dr. Oz show (2009-2010 TV season), and his world peace song and its YouTube video, “Love Around The World.”

Founded in 2008, Flor de Toloache is reminiscent of the early days of mariachi. The group started as a trio, featuring harp, violin, and vihuela, but has grown to a full mariachi ensemble. The members hail from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy,

and the United States, and these diverse backgrounds help to define their unique flavor and sound. The result of this cultural bouquet is an edgy, versatile, and fresh take on traditional Mexican music. They coalesce as would a band of sisters, with a grace and vibrant beauty that casts a spell over their audiences, not unlike the legendary toloache flower, which is still being used in Mexico as a love potion. Over the last few years, Flor de Toloache has performed to sold out crowds in the UK, Germany, Holland, Italy, and France. They continue to mesmerize crowds in the U.S. at such legendary venues as First Avenue in Minneapolis, The Vic in Chicago, Terminal 5 in New York, and Nashville’s Ryman Theater (The Grand Ole Opry).

Jonathan Karrant

Gary Haleamau

Classic Jazz that Captivates

Aloha Spirit in the Nevada Desert

Audiences have characterized Jonathan Karrant as an amazing singer, storyteller, and song-stylist who brings jazz – that most American form of music – richly to life. Hailing from the Ozarks, Jonathan grew up surrounded by generations of family members who reveled in art, music, and dance, and his mother swears that he came out of the womb with music in his soul. After high school, he studied at the William Esper Acting Studio in New York City and was hired by the Metropolitan Opera House to play character roles, among them the opera “Aida” starring Luciano Pavorotti. It was an extraordinary time for him, working at the Met in major productions at Lincoln Center, brushing shoulders on stage with great stars, which inspired him pursue his own career.

Enjoy an afternoon of laid-back rhythms as Hawaiian-born musician Gary Haleamau expresses true aloha spirit with a slack key guitar concert in celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

His performances paint a picture and captivate a room. The Jazz Corner, the renowned Hilton Head jazz spot said in a review, “Karrant sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself.” Jonathan’s album “On and On” hit number four on the jazz charts; he landed the 2014 New York City Jazz Cabaret Honors; and in 2015, he was named “Best Singer” by the San Diego Performing Arts League.

At the tender age of 12, Gary released his debut album featuring vocals and slack key songs that he learned from his father, a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) and slack key guitarist himself. Since then, Gary has recorded several albums of traditional Hawaiian and inspirational music and has collaborated with renowned artists such as Sons of Hawaii, Pandanus Club, and Native Hawaiian Band.

In his popular single, “Lady in Red,” Jonathan truly shines, setting himself apart from other contemporaries, delivering a brilliant command of the phrasing and languid passages that linger.
