A Conversation with R. Jamali, Jamali Gallery

Q. You’ve described Mystical Expressionism as the sixth “ism” in the history of art. What makes this movement fundamentally different from others like Expressionism or Surrealism?

For the last 200 years, Expressionism has been the dominant style in high art. The ‘ism’ preceding my style (Mystical Expressionism) is fundamentally dealing with physical phenomena, as in French Expressionism or Cubism. In my style, the vocabulary is inspired by my mystical dreams. See Jamali: Mystical Expressionism, Dreams and Works (Rizzoli International, 400 pages).

Q. What’s your artistic background or training?

My artistic background is embedded in the 6,000-year old civilization of the Indus valley/Tigrus Euphrates.

Q. When drawing inspiration, would you say you are drawn more to what you see or what you feel?

My inspiration is drawn from my mystical poems and dream imagery.

Q. Do you prefer working on instinct or planning your compositions?

The compositions in my imagery well from the depth of the fundamental nature of consciousness.

Q. Is there a recurring theme or message in your art?

Yes, the recurring theme of my art is the complexity of beauty.

Q. What’s the mission or vision of your gallery?

The mission is to create the largest body of artwork devoted to enhancing the lofty ideas of humanity.

Q. How do you define success in art?

For me, success in art is the complete creation of art in the highest form. That’s the success.

Q. You’ve pioneered techniques like pigment dispersion on cork and painting with your feet. Can you talk about the ritualistic or spiritual importance behind those methods?

Throughout millennia, the rituals of art have been to bring out the spiritual oneness of man.

Q. You blend modern physics with ancient spiritual beliefs. How has your study of quantum physics shaped your artistic vision and approach?

Modern physics, high art, and ancient spiritual beliefs are the same forces of nature working together. In my belief, you cannot separate one from the other. Please refer to Schrodinger’s cat in the monograph, Jamali mystical expressionism, Rizzoli, Donald Kuspit.

Q. What do you hope viewers feel or experience when they stand in front of your art?

I look forward to the viewers realizing their own highness in front of my art.

Q. You often refer to art and peace as being intertwined. In a world of conflict and chaos, how do you believe your art contributes to peace?

Yes, all means of power including political, military, educational, etc. as I see it, are failing us. As per my dream poem, “we combine again and again in this matrix we are one.”

In conclusion, there is a library of material on the subject of mystical expressionism. Physics and art, the spirituality in art, rituals of art making, using non-traditional art materials for image making, etc. My contribution to high art is distilling all of the aforementioned and creating perhaps one of the largest bodies of art in history.

The Club Car is a beloved downtown spot for after-dinner shenanigans while Cisco Brewers is ideal for daytime sipping accompanied by live music and lunch options from top culinary vendors from across the island.

THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME

A decidedly luxurious spin took an epic trip to a whole new level.

Maybe it was during the epic, tension-taming massage at the Fancourt Resort. Or perhaps it was during dinner at Monet’s, when the entire staff spontaneously broke out into joyful song and danced around the restaurant. Surely, it could have been during the unforgettable five-day safari in Kruger National Park (which included daily sightings of leopards, lions, rhinos, hippos, giraffes and elephants.) And definitely sitting on the deck at Oldenberg Vineyards while gazing at the Rondekop. Regardless of where or when it was…. we realized this vacation was more than just that. It was the luxury adventure of a lifetime, and well worth the journey.

Our group’s trip was 17 action packed nights touring three regions of South Africa: The Garden Route, close to the coastline and named for its lush greenery; Cape Town, and Kruger National Park. Each leg of our trip had a focus and a ‘home base’ with immersive regional experiences designed to delight. (And most of them were mind blowing.) Hand feeding a wild elephant, strolling among penguins on the beach, trekking through a stalagmite cave, and fine dining in the wild, to name a few. The itinerary was varied, had something for everyone, and each day left us with plenty to discuss over drinks and dinner with our friends that evening.

South Africa is a country of many different climates and backdrops, which allow a lot of flexibility to choose your own perfect vacation. Whether your preferred style is sophisticated luxury, history, culinary, adventure, golf or seaside, this country has it all. We were beyond thrilled with this tour company who, in our group’s humble opinion, proved to be Best in Class (many of us had been on safari or visited Africa prior with other tour companies.) What gave them next level status? While its tough to rank, their service, itinerary options, local expertise and professionalism made every aspect of our trip perfect. From booking to touch down, to spur of the moment day trips (and extensions!) through to departure, every single detail was handled for us quickly and seamlessly. Our tour guide, George, was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and fun. Of course, it helped that he had a full team of South Afrikaner luxury travel experts behind him working 24/7 to accommodate our every whim and desire.

Here are a few highlights from our custom itinerary:

Stay: Lodging throughout the trip was five star and felt more six star. Case in point: while staying at the Manor House at Fancourt, we enjoyed the Honesty Bar, and had the best massage (ever!) at their spa. In Cape Town, our base camp was the Cape Grace Hotel, (managed by the Fairmont) where our suites overlooked the Victoria & Alfred Harbor, and we enjoyed our plush king size bed with high count linens. Room service for breakfast was complimentary, service was fast and every morsel was spectacular. (Editor’s note: I highly recommend the freshly squeezed green juice.)

Feast: You certainly won’t go hungry on this excursion. In fact, it’s tough to choose which bites to highlight, because all of the food was so spectacular. Farm to table? Check. Michelin-level dining? Check. For adventurous palates, ostrich and other wild game is on the menu. A bit more traditional? You’ll love the elevated European influence. A few of us ventured off on our own and enjoyed lunch at Lanzerac in the heart of the Cape Winelands, and a 7 course premium wine tasting at The Waterside at the V&A Waterfront.

Sip: Celebrated for its Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and more, South Africa is home to some of the world’s best new world wineries. As part of our diverse itinerary, we savored some of the best at Ernie Els Oldenburg Vineyards, and Delaire Graff.

Explore: We ended our sojourn with five days at a private safari lodge, complete with chefs, wait staff, pool(s), observation deck and bar. Each couple enjoyed private luxury accommodations affectionately referred to as “cabins,” complete with its own private jacuzzi or plunge pool. Want to rough it up? Your “cabin” also has an outdoor “bedroom” so you can “camp” (and still enjoy the comforts of modern plumbing.) During our daily game drives, we lost count of how many different animals we observed. (Spoiler alert: It will be much more than five, ranging from colorful exotic birds to leopards on an active hunt.) The best part? Staying in a private lodge means no public vehicles on their land... just you, your private driver and the animals.

Play: While the spectacular safari capped off our 17-night excursion, our bougie bucket list experience also included rounds of golf at some of the most iconic golf courses on the continent. Regardless of the score, we left the 18th green each day smiling after conquering several of the top-ranked golf courses in South Africa.

Wander: If you’re not quite ready to return home, consider extending your stay to another region of Africa, via Rovos Rail. After all, luxury train experiences are all the rage. With a maximum capacity of 72 guests, you’ll be treated like the VIP you are. When you’re not in your world-class wood-paneled coach sipping on South African wine or diving into your four-course lunch and dinner (how about banoffee tartlet with banana and caramel cream?), you can disembark to enjoy a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, on your way to Victoria Falls.

At trip’s end we were heartbroken at the thought of leaving, so we pulled out our calendars to plan our next trip to this incredible part of the world. After beginning her design career in the world of custom kitchen and bath remodeling, Bridgette Caporaso didn’t want to be limited to designing these two spaces alone, especially while seeing residential floor plans trend more and more towards open-concept living. She watched clients transform cook spaces that were connected to other large common areas in their homes and saw a need for connecting the attention to detail of a kitchen and bath designer who knows how to create custom cabinetry and millwork with a more traditional interior design firm that could ensure a cohesive, intentional aesthetic throughout the entire home with the same level of care. SKETCH. a design studio was born in 2013 and since then, craftsmanship has been at the heart of everything she touches.

The company has since expanded through the years to include a woodworking studio, and Caporaso has recently acquired an 80,000 square-foot building that will soon be transformed into a lifestyle-centric showroom which incorporates custom lighting and furniture that is sure to be an invaluable (and convenient) resource for both Caporaso’s residential clients and others in the industry.

“We want to continue to bring our expertise and guidance in new ways, because our clients come here for that — they’re looking for us to help them navigate this vast landscape of the design and construction worlds,” says Caporaso. “I find the best way to do so is by having my finger on the pulse of all of the things that matter to the homeowners.”

One of the designer’s latest projects encompasses all the different facets of SKETCH. a design studio, as it’s a new-build project in Boca Raton’s highly sought-after enclave of Le Lac. Spread acrosss two-anda-half acres, Caporaso has not only tackled the home’s interiors, but has also worked closely with an architecture and landscaping firm to create the ultimate retreat for its owners.

Caporaso has imagined a striking modern Tudor-style home with a strong emphasis on architecture that could feel equally at home in Sun Valley as it does in South Florida.
