A Conversation with Julie Roberts, Owner Palm Beach Art Collection

Background and Experience

Q. Can you tell us about your personal background and what originally inspired your passion for art?

Since as far back as I can remember, I have had a passion for art and painting. I have painted most of my life, but only studied painting formally later in life. Even before I studied art formally, I remember periodically staying up all night painting -- because I felt compelled to. I believe my passion for art came from my father. He was a chemist by training but painted as a hobby.

Before starting The Palm Beach Art Collection, I was a financial executive for many years at USAirways and then Marriott, served on many boards, including two public company boards, and did strategic and financial consulting for a number of galleries, combining my business experience and passion for art.

Q. What motivated you to establish the Palm Beach Art Collection, and how did your vision come to life?

One of my gallery consulting projects years ago was for Ellen Liman, owner of The Liman Gallery, near the Breakers. I had met Ellen when she was a judge for an art show in which I had won one of the awards. When Ellen lost her gallery lease in the historic Paramount Building in Palm Beach, she asked me to help her analyze her options. Long story short, she convinced me to acquire her gallery inventory and to start fulfilling her vision of an online gallery. We co-founded The Palm Beach Art Collection in 2021, and added the Liman Inventory, some of Ellen’s paintings and some of my paintings to our new website on Artsy, which is the world’s largest art marketplace with over 3 million art collectors world-wide.

Q. Were there any pivotal moments or mentors who influenced your career in the art world?

Definitely Ellen has encouraged and influenced me both in my painting and in the gallery. But, our approaches to selling art are very different. Ellen was and is a fixture in the Palm Beach Art Community and social scene, where I am more focused on the e-commerce side of selling art.

The Gallery’s History and Mission

Q. What is the story behind the Palm Beach Art Collection? What makes it unique within the Palm Beach art scene?

From the beginning of the gallery with only the Liman Inventory and Ellen’s and my paintings, we now represent 23 artists and have over 650 works by over 80 artists and over $5M in inventory. Several of the represented artists are international, living and working in Canada, Sicily, the UK and Italy, and others are throughout the US, including Palm Beach.

We offer something for every taste and budget. This breadth of offerings and options is what I try to stress to collectors who are concerned about not being able to see the art locally. It is a tradeoff.

Q. Can you share how you curate your collection to reflect the tastes or interests of your clientele here in Palm Beach and beyond?

“Certainly we watch style and color trends, but good art is never out of style.”

The key is finding good art that collectors will fall in love with, and periodically refreshing the inventory.

Favorite Artists and Artworks

Q. Which artists, past or present, resonate most deeply with you personally?

It is hard to single out one of our artists -- they are all amazing artists and wonderful to work with. The three whose work I feel most passionate about though are Fabio Modica, Iris Scott and Rosso Emerald Crimson. All three have works that took my breath away when I first saw them.

Q. What are you currently observing about the preferences of art collectors in our local area?

We are hearing more about people collecting art as an asset class with the potential for significant financial gains. The bonus is investing in art that you love and can enjoy while it appreciates.

Q. How has the demographic or interests of art buyers evolved over your time as a gallery owner?

We are seeing a lot more younger collectors buying original art.

Q. How do you decide between showcasing local talent versus national or international artists?

In the heart of the exclusive Windsor enclave of Vero Beach, a family of six sought to reimagine their home: a space that would seamlessly merge refined coastal elegance with the warmth and practicality needed for a family with grown children. Enter designer Jamie Roddy, of EdenLA Interiors, an acclaimed Los Angeles-based firm with an expanding footprint in South Florida. Known for weaving elegance and function into cohesive narratives, Roddy brought her vision to life, transforming the home into a retreat that reflects both the clients’ personalities and their lifestyle.

Roddy’s philosophy is simple yet elevated: design should not merely be beautiful, but deeply personal, articulating the individuality of its inhabitants. “The previous owners’ design was stunning, but it had nothing to do with my clients,” Roddy explains. “The interiors were quintessentially ‘Palm Beach,’ but my clients craved something uniquely theirs, not dictated by a zip code.” This ethos guided the Vero Beach project as Roddy infused every corner with intimate, intentional touches, discarding the home’s formal past for a layered design that radiates polish, playfulness, and purpose.

The home’s entry sets the stage with a striking satin brass branch chandelier with dangling quartz crystals casting intricate shadows over textured wallpaper, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. A modern round cowhide rug adds a touch of surprise charm, complemented by vibrant greenery that breathes life into the space. The goal was clear: to establish an immediate sense of welcome, elegance, and whimsy upon arrival.

One of the most striking transformations in the home was the reinvention of the formal living and dining space. With traditional entertaining no longer a priority, Roddy conceived a vibrant game room meant to lure the family’s grown children home more often. Outfitted with a bespoke pool table, a refined marble game table, and patterned indigo drapery, the space exudes an effortless energy while still maintaining a chic interior. Statement lighting fixtures and sleek silver consoles complete the look, making this room a vibrant yet refined hub for family gatherings.

In the kitchen, boldness meets functionality with a stunning Panda slab island and backsplash; its dynamic veining drawing the eye and anchoring the open-concept design. This space seamlessly connects to the dining and living areas, where a custom dining table and a handcrafted coconut bead chandelier offer an elevated, yet relaxed setting for shared meals. The interplay of textures, from polished stone to natural wood, creates an environment that feels both luxurious and approachable. Throughout the home, Roddy curated spaces that balance statement-making design with livability. The powder bath, for instance, is an artful surprise, featuring a striking black-and-white wallpaper backdrop, a burl veneer vanity, and custom pop art that injects a dose of playfulness into the otherwise tailored palette.

The true stand out for the homeowners was all of the bespoke art created for them. The ocean painting that holds court over the updated staircase with custom blue to white ombre carpet runner has sand in it from Manhattan Beach (where the clients own another residence). These touches delight the owners to no end every time they pass by.

Each bedroom, too, tells its own distinct story, from the soothing primary suite with custom artwork to the “kids” spaces that enliven the design narrative, incorporating unexpected bursts of color and pattern.

The charm of Roddy’s vision extends outdoors, where the pool area beckons with curated leisure. Serena and Lily chaises and vintage repurposed peacock chairs invite lounging while tasseled umbrellas nod to an endless summer.

While the end result is breezy, sophisticated modern coastal, the transformation presented its own set of complexities: aligning the vision while respecting Windsor’s architectural vernacular to navigating HOA requirements and selecting materials suited to Florida’s coastal climate.

Through precise planning and collaboration with DellaPorta Construction, Roddy and her team ensured seamless integration of every element. They delivered a bespoke, detail-rich design that perfectly captured the family’s vision and lifestyle.

LUGANO DIAMONDS WITH LEWIS MILLER DESIGN

Celebrating their third annual Palm Beach Tabletop event, Holiday House, a NYC and Hamptons-based organization founded by breast cancer survivor Iris Dankner, raised funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation with the help of many acclaimed designers. The event was held on February 24th at the Colony Hotel on Palm Beach.

This year the designers drew inspiration from many different places, not only designing a tabletop, but a story. Masterfully mixing different colors, shades, and patterns they created inspiring tablescapes to provide an enchanting setting.

Shown on pg. 105, Lugano Diamonds with Lewis Miller Design were inspired by the sophisticated elegance of the original film “The Pink Panther.” Sultry shades of pink and mocha playfully mingled with accents of Lugano’s signature pale blue and silver color palette, creating a chic, plush and polished ambiance.

Arhaus x Timeless Oak Designs drew inspiration from the natural world, crafting a tablescape that blended the raw beauty of wild florals and patterns, with the refined elegance of tailored furniture. They chose the Danae dining table and paired it with the Rhodin dining chair, in line with their shared

Embracing “La Dolce Vita,” Design by Tula’s tablescape played off the similarities between our Palm Beach lifestyle and the Italian Riviera: they both exude luxury, sophistication, and relaxation. Their tablescape was a beautiful blend of blues, greens, yellows, and oranges evoking the colorful aesthetic of both Italy and Palm Beach.

Designer Krista W. Alterman used a storyteller approach. With “Unbreakable Courage,” her bold tablescape drenched in black and white carries a powerful message that “healing is messy, beautiful, and anything but boring.” Krista shares, “Our design shouts that beauty isn’t just soft—it’s fierce, fearless, and full of life.”

Inspired by the Cuban culture, Riese Design brought several notable elements into their tablescape. With a nod to our neighbors to the south, they used chairs made with material from congas, plate chargers reminiscent of a drum cymbal, vibrant colors on the tablecloth, a tropical floral arrangement, and even a Cuban cigar for the gentlemen.

Speak Up for Kids of Palm Beach County: Advocacy for Children

“When overseeing the meeting, I witnessed the joy the members felt sharing their favorite books with foster youth. Then, I could not help but feel that this joy will be felt by those who receive the project.”
