What began as Dee seeking business expertise to complement her design expertise has blossomed into a true creative partnership, with Jennifer's marketing savvy and organizational skills helping expand their client roster from Kentucky to Florida's coastal communities, including Charleston, Tampa Bay, Sarasota, Naples, and Vero Beach. We caught up with them in their beautiful Tampa studio.
What’s your superpower as designers?
DEE: We have a discerning eye. That’s a God-given thing, but you cultivate it as you expose yourself to new things. We’re curious, so we’re always seeking new and better ways to do things. Jen picks up things so quickly, and being attuned to the artistic side of design came to her naturally. Her personality is as steady as she goes. In this business, a lot is going on all the time, and projects have to stay on track. Jen is the calm in the storm; she doesn’t participate in chaos, which comes in handy.
JEN: Dee is a creative force and a fantastic storyteller; she can paint a picture for people with words. People want to live where Dee describes! Her color sense is unmatched; our clients say she’s a color genius.
DEE: Tina Agnello is also a key part of our team. She is a senior designer who creates beautiful drawings and excels in project coordination. She has amazing attention to detail, can visualize the construction process, and speaks the language of all the trades and professionals we work with. We don’t have a formula look. We really learn how our clients live and what they love, and we develop that. We can accommodate every style and have extensive knowledge and experience with a wide range of aesthetics, from historic restoration to traditional and contemporary design. I say we don’t have a look, but we definitely have a standard, and that’s quality and excellence in all things. We are very loyal to the subcontractors we’ve had over the years because they meet the standards we demand.
What’s your favorite part of the process?
DEE: Many times, one partner isn’t as involved as the other. Then, when they start to live in this beautiful space, they fall in love with it. We love watching our clients become attuned to beauty and how it affects them. I love beautiful things; they make your life emotionally rich. Once you become more artistically attuned, it spills over into everything. Our long-term clients say they’re more interested in listening to music, seeing art, and enjoying good food. A beautiful environment has a profoundly positive impact on your mental health. We have one client who told us he can feel his cares start to drop away as soon as he turns into his driveway.
How do you stay inspired creatively?
DEE: I love all the arts. Jennifer and I started taking trips to New York together, not just for the design district, but to visit galleries and see the fashion, because fashion always precedes the movement in home furnishings. We can anticipate trends and stay current.
For people who are on the fence, what are the benefits of involving an interior designer?
There are plenty of beautiful things out there, and you can shop online any hour of the day for them. But you run the risk of ending up with a house full of beautiful things that are a hot mess because there’s no discipline or intent. Things have to reside happily together. Even if you’re not trained to evaluate what's wrong with a room, your eye knows if something’s off. We ensure that everything in your home works together seamlessly.
Can you share a little of your secret sauce?
We have three things that we introduce to every project, though: books, because they’re both beautiful and useful. Real orchids that can live in a palm tree when they’ve lost their blooms, and art, which is our first love.
