The Charleston Design District is fertile creative ground
by Denise K. James
In Storehouse Nine of the Charleston Design District, on a recent summer day, Sonny Sisan was feeling inspired. The mastermind behind Floral Studios, Sisan relocated his workspace from downtown to be a tenant of the new Design District – a move, he said, that has been good for his work and will likely be good for Charleston. “It’s cool to see it from the beginning to now,” he said. “I feel like Charleston has needed this for so long.”
The vision for the Design District is led by Jamestown, a development company known for design-forward real estate, including the Mixson community in North Charleston and Westside Provisions in Atlanta. According to Michael Phillips, president, the company “fell in love” with the former Naval Shipyard and with North Charleston in general. “We’ve always seen North Charleston as the intersection of the Lowcountry,” he said. “It connects the beaches, Summerville, the airport – it is central.”
The Jamestown team sought to honor the history of the Naval Shipyard, established in 1901 and an integral part of U.S. Navy history until its closure in 1996. Storehouse Nine, built in the early 20th century for storing Naval watercraft, has been lovingly restored to include 78 boutique apartment homes, studio space for artists and makers, and, soon, a restaurant with a rooftop terrace.
Even months before the official autumn launch of the Design District, the building buzzed with activity. Artists and creatives worked diligently on projects, including Sisan of Floral Studios; Lindsay Collins of LMC [Soundsystem]; Betsy Butler of Nidum Studios; Kate McDonald of her eponymous Bridal Boutique; Sarah-Hamlin Hastings of Fritz Porter Design Collective; and many others. The air felt charged with creative power.
“At Fritz Porter, our mission is to support and celebrate the art and craft of the design industry,” Hastings said.
“We are excited to be part of the new Charleston Design District, as it brings together like-minded vendors, artisans, and makers who share our passion for craftsmanship and creativity.”
Meanwhile, the neighboring building, Storehouse Eight, was also gaining traction.
“These two restored buildings have their original floors and replicated windows to honor the Naval Shipyard,” explained marketing manager Thea Anderson. “Batteries for submarines were made in Storehouse Nine, where people will now be living, creating, and dining!”
Phillips said the word “design” in the name Design District is meant to encompass all sorts of design: floral, home, clothing, product, and more. Getting to know the surrounding community was an important part of the project – Charleston is not just for tourists, and the Design District is not just for window shoppers.
“Our ethos is, if you design something for the local community, tourists can be part of it,” he said. “But the reverse isn’t true. We see this district serving the commercial and hospitality industry – we want it to be accessible and dynamic.”
He added that when Jamestown purchased the property, they shared an in-depth video with the surrounding North Charleston community about their intentions: to preserve historic buildings and develop new ones that complemented the shipyard’s character.
“The video documents people’s stories and shows what will make the shipyard relevant in the future,” he said. “The neighbors have been supportive. We tend to work quietly when we develop something and try not to overpromise and underdeliver.”
The businesses of the Design District were carefully curated thanks in part to Jamestown’s connections via the Boston Design Center. “Because we own the Boston Design Center, we know a lot of people in the design industry,” Phillips said. “The Urban Electric Company is highly respected and brought in contacts as well.”
According to owner Dave Dawson, The Urban Electric Company “made its home” at the Navy Yard almost 20 years ago, in 2006, after outgrowing spaces in West Ashley and downtown. The company was drawn to “the proximity, scale, and character-rich spaces” and occupied a few other buildings around the Naval base prior to its current showroom.
Though Urban Electric sticks to a by-appointment-only format for working with clients, Dawson said the uptick in visitors has spilled into additional passer-by interest. “We’ve seen a lot more people spontaneously stopping by, interested to learn about what we do and intrigued by the level of craftsmanship they can encounter behind our shop doors,” he said.
He added that it’s always been a “dream” to be in a neighborhood like the Navy Yard – a multi-purpose community.
“The idea of having similar opportunities to share stories and exchange ideas with like-minded business leaders right in our own backyard is incredibly compelling,” he said. “As Charleston becomes a well-known destination for design – a distinction that’s long overdue – there’s a yearning for a hub to harness all that energy and to create the types of serendipitous encounters that designers thrive on where they can bump into each other, catch up, share notes and collectively feel the pulse of the industry.”

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort slows down the busy world
by Denise K. James
Wellness is more than just skin-deep at the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort in North Miami Beach. Dating back to 1958, the original Carillon Hotel hosted legendary guests such Frank Sinatra and Dr. Martin Luther King, then was reimagined for the 21st century as a state-of-the-art hub for “cutting-edge wellness therapies,” in the words of general manager Patrick Fernandes.
“The vision for Carillon as a wellness resort grew from a deep understanding of current times – where stress, pace and disconnection often define daily life,” Ferandes said. “We saw an opportunity to create a sanctuary that meets people where they are, offering not just respite but real transformation. Miami’s vibrant energy and natural beauty made it the perfect canvas for this mission.”
My own trip to the Carillon Resort on a warm (not yet scorching) weekend in May introduced me to a new level of wellbeing. I began the journey by dropping off my luggage in my king suite with an ocean view – almost the size of my apartment – and admiring beautiful, ornate tiling on the floor of the bath. After sliding my feet into sandals, I headed downstairs to the spa to indulge in “Touchless Wellness” – no humans necessary! What could be more relaxing?
My first treatment was a guided meditation in the Somadome. I settled into the comfortable, quiet pod, closed my eyes, and enjoyed two different meditations about peace and love – then emerged feeling markedly calmer. But more was still to come.
The MindSpa booth – where I tuned out the bustling resort and gazed at star-like lights overhead – made me forget where I was. It was followed by a session with the BioCharger NG, which surrounded me with healing light and frequencies custom-attuned to my needs. Finally, I drifted over a serene pool in the Salt Float Bath, lost in relaxed brain waves.
According to Ferandes, these modalities are hand-selected to aid in the resort’s mission. “Our spa offerings are chosen through a thoughtful and collaborative process. We listen to our guests, residents and members, stay closely attuned to global wellness trends, and partner with trusted experts. When we introduce a modality like the BioCharger, it’s because it aligns with our philosophy, rooted in science, proven efficacy, and personal transformation.”
Saturday morning, I rose feeling refreshed and excited to take in the ocean view from my balcony (and scarf a delicious muffin from The Corner Store, Carillon’s on-site cafe) before an afternoon of sunbathing. After a shot or three of espresso, I wandered downstairs, smiling benevolently at other guests. Clearly, the love and peace meditations took hold.
Vibes at the Carillon are relaxed and luxurious, not ostentatious. The trademark cabana pool overlooks the Atlantic and is flanked by a full bar
featuring whole coconuts, tasty cocktails, and a lunch menu, while the “adults only” pool upstairs stays blissfully quiet. Service at the Carillon is also top-notch; I never lacked for ice water or a comfortable lounge chair, complete with a towel.
That evening, after a full day of reading and lounging, I savored a tasty supper of fresh seafood paired with a glass of rosé on the patio at The Strand, Carillon’s on-site restaurant. My skin felt sun-kissed, and my spirits were lifted.
